Far, far away where the swallows fly when we have winter, there lived a King who had eleven sons and one daughter.

The Wild Swans
This illustration is inspired by the fairytale "The Wild Swans" (Hans Christian Andersen's version of the tale) which has has a ton of variations like: "Six Swans" or "The Seven Ravens", etc. The basics of the story include a widowed King with 7 to 12 children and an evil stepmother that curses all of the children except the youngest daughter into swans. To save her brothers the youngest is given a terrible task involving nettles. My favorite retelling of this fairytale is easily 'Daughter of the Forest' by Juliet Marillier (I would recommend it for an older teens/adult fiction audience). Have any of you ever read it? Or let me know your favorite version of the fairytale I am always looking for more! :D

Witches in fairytales: The maiden who seeks her brothers
While in terms of popular culture there are mainly three specific witches that dominate the world of European fairytales (Snow-White's queen, Hansel & Gretel's hag, Rapunzel's motherly witch), there is actually a fourth recurring witch when it comes to fairytale adaptations. She is a recurring type and character in fairytale media, even though she isn't as iconic or clear-cut as the three previous witches - because she rather belongs to an entire fairytale type. "The maiden who seeks her brothers".
In a dominating variation of the fairytale-type, the lost brothers were turned into birds by magic: it was the work of this witch, who became their stepmother/the new queen. Some adaptations even expand her role by fusing her with the second antagonist of this fairytale type: the persecuting mother-in-law who hides away the children of the heroine and attempts to have her killed for her so called "crimes". She is mainly present in the two famous stories "The Wild Swans", by Andersen, and "The Six Swans", by the brothers Grimm, though her roots go as far back as legends such as the Irish tale of the sons of Lir...

My List of Personally Favorite and Great Fairy Tales Fanfics
Yep, you hear right. There are still fanfics being written for fairy tales. While most of them tend to be smut or crossovers with Disney movies, I have found great gems lurking beneath. (Reminder: this list can be updated if I find more)
If you are interested in stories that reminiscent of those dark tales before going to bed while also craving something delightfully nuanced or fresh take with that edge of darkness but not too long to bore you out, here are the fics below:
A Dance in Iron Shoes by Gehayi (Snow White)
All Kinds of Skill by GracefullySeven (Allerleirauh/All-Kinds-Of-Fur)
Three Sisters, Bound by Blythe (Vasilissa the Beautiful, The Death of Koshchei the Deathless, The Frog Princess)
Swanwing by Gehayi (The Wild Swans)
Slow Poison by Gehayi (Diamonds and Toads)
runnin' for a soft place to fall by lady_ragnell (Allerleirauh/All-Kinds-Of-Fur)
Promise of the Sea by Gehayi (The Little Mermaid)
mist behind and light before by cathalin (Cinderella)
Of Oceans and Ondines by Gehayi (The Snow Queen, The Little Mermaid)
A Skin Made of Sorrow by Carenejeanes (Catskin)
The Path of Thorns by Jetamors (Little Red Riding Hood)
tongue-tied i took her in by quadrille (The Six Swans/The Wild Swans)
The Six Swans by Gileonnen (The Six Swans)
faux by perennial (the ballet Swan Lake)
Gehayi wrote beautiful fics that suck you in and make you feel like you were a kid who first began to immerse into stories again. All of the authors here are amazing and if you can, check out their works and give them some love 😊
Not exactly under fairy tales fandom but give it a shot if you would, they are immaculately written.
The Red Country by jibrailis (Alice in Wonderland)
Frame Story by jibrailis (Princess Tutu fic but it is intertwined with the Twelve Dancing Princess fairy tale)

"The Wild Swans", by Hans Christian Andersen.
"'Go out into the world and get your own living,' said the queen. 'Fly like great birds, who have no voice.' But she could not make them ugly as wished, for they were turned into eleven beautiful wild swans. Then, with a strange cry, they flew through the windows of the palace, over the park, to the forest beyond.", from The Wild Swans.
"'Your brothers can be released,' said she, 'if you have only courage and perseverance. True, water is softer than your own delicate hands, and yet it polishes stones into shapes; it fells no pain as your fingers would feel, it has no soul, and cannot suffer such agony and torment as you will have to endure. Do you see the stinging nettle which I hold in my hand?'", from The Wild Swans.

Costumes for two fey and a cursed prince (oc)
I wanted to focus on costumes/clothing this time since I'm not really good at coming up with things for people to wear in my drawings. These clothes are loosely based on some outfits I liked on Pinterest.
(From left to right: I can't find the name or brand for the one it's based on but it was a lingerie set. Second is inspired by the Zandra Rhodes Evening Dress from 1979. Thirs is Inspired by the work of Rudolf Nureyev.)

Note
Have you ever had any ideas for adapting "The Wild Swans" into the DisneyVerse?
Not as of yet. Its one of the Fairytales I feel really deserves a good/special adaptation and I haven't yet thought of something that really sparks it for me. Like, if I liked it less I could work on it more/faster? If that makes sense 😅

Since it’s Free Comic Book Day, I figured I’d share my short comic from the Valor Anthology, The Nettle-Witch, (pretty loosely) based on the fairy tale The Wild Swans. Something about the imagery and the locations in the story always made it one of my favourites to read as a kid, and I tried to get some of that feeling into the look of my comic.
