anyway to end the series on ganondorf tp's writing, my take (which isn't canon but arguable as a valid "death of the author" read imo) is that he is at his most iredeemable AND that's because he has zero things left to lose and no community left and his goal doesn't even make sense anymore he is parasitic and a ghost and pathologically obsessed by his own godlike legitimacy because that is the only thing he still has and it has prolonged his life in a horrible diminished state in a nightmare dimension so SURELY it must mean something right right RIGHT

Modern au

Manon and Dorian are kinda sorta pretentious af and they made sure their daughter has a name that has its own weight but also they made sure it’s beautiful.

Their daughter’s name and middle name translates to: beautiful gracious queen (her first name is welsh like her mama and Dorian was the one to pick her middle name and he made sure both names worked together both in sound and meaning)

The daughter accidentally learned of her name’s meaning and with her ego it wasn’t a good kind of knowledge.

Because when anyone referred to her as ‘princess’ she’d just roll her eyes (like her mom) and mutter “why call me a princess when I’m a queen”

Anyway baby ate her pride when she started school and was forced to learn how to write her name. Because her name (first) is long. With eight letters there were a lot of tears involved.

Manon negotiated (she actually lost the negotiations because her daughter is small and too pitiful she had to help) again pushover mama so anyway baby would write it only three times and Manon would write the rest.

Dorian was like ‘witchling, you can’t do that’ and he’d sit with his daughter instead because ‘you need to learn how to write your name’ but his daughter argues that his and Manon’s names are short and they don’t understand her plight

Dorian is like, it’s only two letters more than his name, and three letters more than Manon’s so it’s really not that bad.

He lays down on the floor next to the tantruming child. He helps by writing her name twice but she has to do the rest.

Honestly Manon is weak and gives in easily this is why Dorian took over homework because he can handle their child and her dramatics (which she takes after him that’s why he GETS her while Manon just gives in)

You don't need to know Anne Rice on a conceptual/personal level to appreciate the Vampire Chronicles, but boy... As a formerly angry child who is now an adult still shackled to all the grief of childhood and grief on top of grief on top of grief and god, yes, rage.

it's really something to think about Claudia representing a fear not only of child loss but a child in hell, written by someone who lost their child.

The fear of having been a bad parent when you had the chance, the fear of your bad parenting somehow extending into the graceless dark of death. Your child died young and unexpected and what if she's out there and she's angry? What if she remembers every colic-y night you had to put her down and walk away? What if somewhere your child is growing in an afterlife you can't comprehend and she still holds you responsible?

And what if your anger, no matter how big, how justified, how grown up, will always look to others at once toothless and childless but unforgivably terrifying because of that duality to everyone around you? To the "real" adults? To the adult who is supposed to love you most, love you past the harm of the other grown ups who failed you?

And what if you are the grown up and you do not know how to tell other grown ups to stop hurting you? What if you do not know how to help a child in hell, even though you may have once been in a child in hell? What if you only know how to love someone to the point of witnessing their anger? What if anger and rage are your greatest fear? What if you can't validate, heal, or bear witness to anyone's anger because you are so scared it will threaten your own grief, the thing you are closest to, coziest with? What if people around you figure out- what if YOU have no choice but to figure out- that you are not more righteous, more good, less horrifying or horrified, because you know how to keep your voice down? Because you do not allow your hurt the outward noise and destruction of rage?

And what if you are born only of other's inability to handle your anger? What if you die for the plot, haunt the narrative, and find yourself intangible in the hands of not just your lover or child but an entire audience? What if the only way anyone can conceptualize you or process the loving part of you is to kill you off so they can measure the duality of you in the palms of their hands, safe from the actual consequence, confrontation, or conversation of you? What if you heal wrong and try to be better than those before you and it isn't enough? What if all you do is forge a new path in hurting people, letting them down, abandoning the people you care for to the cold, lonely dark that you tried to rage hot enough to keep at bay?

Anyway, the Interview with the Vampire is good.

Speaking of Tyrest. A lot of people forget that he treated Pharma with absolute disdain, not only using him as a test subject for a clearly painful mass murder machine, but talking to Pharma like he saw him as nothing but some henchman to order around that was nothing more than a 'diseased cripple' if Tyrest hadn't come to rescue him.

Like it really is an interesting background dynamic with some curious implications, but when you look at fandom posts from around that issue/the years after, for some reason people just saw "Pharma worked with Tyrest" and concluded Pharma is a card carrying bigot ksjfnskxkd. Like yeah Pharma didn't do anything to stop Tyrest but it seems his main beef with the Autobots was with Ratchet in particular and maybe a general disdain for his ex-comrades. As well as continuing to hate Decepticons which like, not even the "good Autobots" are immune to (even in Pharma's introduction, First Aid says in his journal something like "yeah we all hate Decepticons, but Pharma REALLY hates them"). And despite what fandom likes to construe there's really no evidence in IDW1 that Autobots and Decepticons are different "races" or "types" of Cybertronians, so Pharma hating Decepticons really isn't a bigotry/robot racism thing. And instead probably has something to do with, idk, the 4 million year long galaxy-spanning blood feud war, or maybe being blackmailed and tortured into insanity by the Biggest and Most Decepticon-y of Decepticons.

Tyrest treated Pharma like trash, the other Decepticons working for Tyrest (how come no one ever brings that up btw) also hated him, so if anything it seems that Pharma was more of a rogue element only staying with Tyrest bc he was his best option and probably had no way to even escape.

I'm glad that at least in recent years the fandom has acquired a keen reading eye and good taste to finally recognize Pharma as the (accidentally) complex character he is instead of making him some posh, racist Starscream clone SHSJDGSGDH

i cant even like post about the horrors that are going on currently because im gonna get too mad but oh my god. like i would give her really good credit for writing a character like marius that has 0 self awareness about his insanely disgusting behavior bc like. that CAN work. you can make the reader feel disgust and see things through the eyes of someone who is horrible while not romanticizing the behavior. clearly anne did not get the memo for this one.

a bit obsessed with the idea of kusakabe dying as a form of sacrifice to specifically protect/save somebody else. it's consistent enough with the theme of the past generation achieving no meaningful feats against significant threats but it's also ironic enough that someone without a technique and who claims their philosophy is primarily self-sacrificial - although he tends to stay from his own ideals in critical moments, proving he's not only brave when necessary but he does have a sense of responsabilty and guilt - ultimately redeems themselves through death resulting in the achievement of something his colleagues have failed to do. not that i'm wishing for him to die, i hope he doesn't. but it would also make a clear-cut distinction between him and a character like mei mei, who narratively serves a very similar purpose (besides her being a foil to nanami). to have someone be awarded by their selfishness just for it to not be worth much within a world and system that runs and sustains itself due to the sorcerer's labour power, whose only means of subsistence is to sell themselves away. a class of people who is doomed no matter what path they choose to take, as long as they do not break free from their duties and as long as the system doesn't collapse. a death that could serve as a symbol of punishment towards solidarity and altruism but a win for revolution.
