Genuine question: How does one get good at programming? Like I’m good at math, I know basic C# more or less and I get a lot of the core concepts, but I can’t imagine what it’s even like to be proficient at this stuff. Is there a point where you just “get it”, or do you just have to keep googling why your script isn’t working over and over until you die?

There isn't really any one generalized "programming skill" - it's possible to have a lot of computer science understanding but be completely unable to accomplish specific tasks, or to get very good at accomplishing specific tasks without any real computer science understanding

In college I took a number of CS classes that were mostly language agnostic focusing on broad topics like asymptotic analysis, data structures and algorithms, recursion, and reading/understanding code (and more specific stuff about memory management/how computers work etc)

This core foundation has been very useful to me, but it's worth noting that at the time I graduated college I wasn't really "good at programming" in any meaningful sense - if you asked me to accomplish an actual concrete, useful task, I would've struggled quite a bit!

So how do you get good at accomplishing tasks? Same as anything else, spend a lot of time doing similar things and (ideally) expand your skillset over time. It helps a lot to have a programming job, both because it means you spend all day doing this kind of thing and because you're surrounded by (ideally) good code/tools and people who are more experienced than you

This is a sideblog-to-a-sideblog for Reasons for Hope, because I want to promote actions and spread awareness for things that don't always fit on a good news blog specifically

For context: Queer, trans, disabled, white, USian, for context.

Let me know if I post something offensive, I promise I have practice fixing things when I mess up instead of lashing out at the person who told me. I don't want to post hurtful things, so I genuinely want to always learn more about how to not do that, even when it's uncomfortable.

This is all very long because I'm still incapable of being concise.

About This Blog

Made this blog because I keep wanting to reblog or post about actions people can take, but didn't want to put them on Reasons for Hope unless they were actually mostly good news.

As a person who's Been There with spiraling, I really get the need to have access to a space that you know will contain good news and ONLY good news, in this day and age.

Also made it because I have Opinions and want to talk about Issues and activism and I'm committed to not doing that on my good news blog unless it involves, again, actual good news.

So, follow if you want! I definitely invite people to send in actions (links to campaigns/petitions/major protests/letter writing campaigns/etc.) specifically as submissions. I'll put up a how-to and link it here at some point, bc I've learned from Reasons for Hope that if they're in ask format I won't usually have the time/energy to reformat that/make it into a post.

(Sorry to people who've sent asks in on there, you're great. I'll switch to a submissions-based attempted system there too once I get the chance. May be a minute, I'm about to start a new job(!!).

My Editorial Standards

My usual editorial standards from Reasons for Hope apply, modified for this sort of blog:

Any donation-related posts/submissions need to be from some kind of established organization. It can be super grassroots etc. but I need to be able to verify that it's not a scam.

For that reason, no personal fundraisers/gofundmes. I'm genuinely sorry about this because I know a lot of people need the help but like I say on Reasons for Hope, there's no way to truly vet the vast majority of those posts, and I really don't have the time to try.

I'll come up with some sort of tag to put on all the particularly upsetting/fucked content so people can filter it and just see the action posts. Preferably something unique so it doesn't screen out other people's posts if you want to filter

I'll also have a tag for any particularly upsetting/fucked informational/educational things I post, because I do want to help spread awareness about a number of things, some of which will be pretty upsetting.

That said, I'll try to keep those informational posts only to things that are solutions-focused and/or have an element of good news or hopeful updates, where possible.

I'll also keep most of those posts behind a read-more where possible.

I will not post any campaigns or actions for reelecting Joe Biden until either the genocide in Gaza ends, or until September 1, 2024 (the month early voting starts).

Why do I have that policy? Because Joe Biden is absolutely committing war crimes, but Donald Trump would still, in fact be worse, for the US in general, for BIPOC in the US in particular, and for Palestinians/Gaza. I made a post about this with more details that I'll link here at some point.

Everything is going to be labeled with the link's source, the organization running it, the date posted (if identifiable), and the dates of the campaign/campaign deadline.

Re: Posting bad news here

I've been thinking about starting this sideblog-to-a-sideblog for a while now, because there are a lot of actions/campaigns/etc. that I really wanted to help promote, but did not want to put on Reasons for Hope, because I'm trying really hard to keep that limited to actual, you know, reasons for hope.

That said, I will be including upsetting stuff here. It will have its own tag for people to filter if they only want to see the links to actions. But I am committed to including it.

That's partly because there are a lot of issues that very people know about, and I believe a lot in the power of spreading knowledge/awareness.

It's also because of the reason I finally stopped pondering and decided to start this blog: I just found out tonight that my grandfather died young because of toxic radiation from a nuclear meltdown at a super dangerous and experimental nuclear reactor, which the US government covered up completely and continued operating for decades. Right next to Los Angeles. btw.

If you live in or near Simi Valley, Chatsworth, or the West San Fernando Valley, or your parents did, get high-risk-level-appropriate cancer screenings. And if you're in Simi or within like 5 miles of it...probably don't drink the tap water. Also maybe try to move. (Consulting with a public health scientist/activist friend about this, will report back.)

I was already anti-nuclear, including anti-nuclear power, because of the absolute devastation it's done, especially to Indigenous communities and Japanese civilians. I didn't want to get into it on Reasons for Hope because of the whole "urgency of climate change" thing. But suffice to say that being anti-nuclear just shot very far up my "activism priorities" list.

None of this, or any other horrific things I may post about, conflict with or ruin my faith in humanity. I've definitely been incredibly pessimistic and misanthropic in my life.

But I believe that, for all the bad and evil things humans do, there is equal or greater potential for good. I believe it's like they say: "Hurt people hurt people." That's not the case always, but it is very often. Now, for the first time in history, we have the physical ability to end starvation and scarcity and a lot of death and suffering. We're still getting there, though we still have a long way to go.

I believe in a future where we can all hurt each other (and the other life around us) far less. I believe in a future where we have beaten and reserved at climate change.

I want to live to see that future, and I want all of you to get the chance to see it with me.

anon, i'm sorry, but it's too early for this. some bullet points:

your ask was not motivational, it was pretty mean (or, perhaps, "blunt and negative," to use your phrasing). and while you are entitled to your opinion of me, whatever that is, i also don't understand why you would want to follow someone you find that annoying.

if you are genuinely trying to help in future, an example of someone essentially telling me the same thing in a more motivational way is the ask i received from super-kame-love yesterday which identified the same problem and also provided a resource to try and combat it. you'll note from their ask they never called me names or used demeaning language. if you're trying to be helpful, this is a better blueprint.

to be clear: those screenshots i included in my reply yesterday are not of negative comments sent to me by someone else. they are of posts i made on a private side blog on tuesday after receiving your first comment & the comment someone else (i assume someone else, anyway) sent me accusing me of sending your ask to myself for attention, which, when combined with your ask about how nagging & attention-seeking i am, made me feel like total & utter garbage. like everyone in the world felt the same way about me & hated me for it.

i use that sideblog as a vent space and you have no idea how fucking dark it gets there. i don't need anyone to leave me negative comments because anything even remotely unkind you or anyone else thinks about me, i guarantee i have already thought of & told myself a thousand times over in much crueler language. i seem sad all the time? yeah, i am sad all the time, i suffer from crippling depression & anxiety which ruins my life & i am in treatment for.

you keep repeating how much more popular smut is. you do know that i write smut, right? that the whole reason i started this blog was to write & publish smut? maybe i don't write the kind of smut you like, but i do write it.

and while sure tiktok can be used to promote fanfic (i mean, i guess? idk.), most of the people i am comparing myself to do not, so you can stop telling me about tiktok. i don't use it and i have no interest in it.

if you think i'm just "sad to gain attention," then maybe you shouldn't follow me. it doesn't seem like you enjoy following me very much if you feel the need to send these long asks about all the things i am doing wrong. i'm sorry to have confused you with the screenshots, but i am pretty uninterested in cointinuing this dialogue if i am honest.

the fact is, what you see of me as lemony-snickers is only one tiny fragment of my life. a vague citrus-shaped snippet. when you call people names (and yeah, calling me a nagging girlfriend counts, i think), it has repercussions. i'm an actual person with actual feelings that were actually hurt by what you sent. it would have hurt regardless, but it had a huge & negative impact not only on that particular day, but spiraling through the rest of my week, because of things happening in my life that you didn't see.

A/N: I hope you like this! It’s definitely been a minute since I wrote for my fav vamp boy Eric! So i hope everything is consistent to the seasons. I did more of a first meeting with Eric and Reader, so I hope that’s okay. I also apologize for it being long but I’ve been in a writing slump for so long that I just kind of let it take me where it wanted to go until i ran out of juice for it lol. I hope it’s not too much of an abrupt cut off.

It had been a month since you'd seen your sister, this mainly having to do with the fact that she was now Vampire. Which you knew she had a hard time adjusting to especially after everything she went through with Franklin. But you think that one of the main things that helped her with her transition was that no matter what you still remained a constant in her life.

Although this was the first time you'd be seeing your big sister in person, you'd called and texted each other constantly making sure that she still had some kind of normalcy in her new life. But from what she had been telling you after that first initial week she had adjusted well enough to be expected and even got a job at the place where her maker worked as a bartender. And that's where you were planning on meeting her tonight; Fangtasia.

You'd never been to a vampire bar. Not that you were prejudiced against them, it's just you never really had time for going out to bars and clubs with school literally keeping your social life shackled. So, you were both excited and nervous. You conveyed your feelings to Tara and she told you that there was nothing to worry about in the bar and if anyone did decide to mess with her big sister she'd take care of them personally.

You laughed her off but told her you appreciated it.

When you walked into Fangtasia it was nothing like you expected it to be. With it's red leather walls and stripper poles evenly spaced out in the place. Not to mention the massive bar that took up most of the space of the right wall and dead center was a stage with a lone chair or could you even call it a chair? It was more like a throne; that was sitting in the dead center of the stage with an obscenely handsome man sitting in it. His long legs spread out almost as if in invitation as he scanned the crowd of swaying bodies of both vampire and human. As he scanned the crowd his intense blue eyes suddenly made contact with yours. 

You felt like a mouse staring into the mesmerizing eyes of a snake as you held you captive with those eyes you felt your heartbeat quicken and saw a smirk spread on that stoic marble face. Could he actually hear your heartbeat from this far? And with all of this noise going on in the background? 

Suddenly you felt a hand around your arm and were pulled away from those transfixing eyes. 

“Y/N!” Tara smiled and instantly wrapped you in a hug. It was definitely a tighter hug than your used to from your big sister but you embraced her back, with a smile on your face. 

“Tara! I missed you so much.” you said as you continued to hug her before she pulled away. 

“I missed you too Y/N.” she said and you felt your heart expand at the sight of Tara’s genuine smile. “Come on let’s get you a drink. You’re going to need one if you’re going to deal with all these weirdos tonight.” she said as she pulled you towards the bar, without giving you a chance to sneak another peak at the mystery man on the throne. 

“Okay so we have to talk about the elephant in the room.” You stated as you watched Tara walk to the back of the bar as she started to pour the both of you drinks. 

Tara gave you a quizzical look and she almost looked wary. 

“Now does a drastic change in fashion sense come with being a vampire? Or is this just part of the job description?” You let out a chuckle and you felt your heart ache a bit as you saw Tara breathe a sigh of relief, before letting out a laugh herself. 

“It’s mainly for the job. So you don’t make the weirdos feel out of place.” She said just as two heavily pierced goths came up to order something at the bar. You quickly stifled a giggle at their pissed off expressions to which TAra just quickly shrugged them off and started making their drinks.

As you were talking with Tara the next thirty minutes you felt this ever present presence behind you like someone was boring holes into the back of your skull, demanding that you look at them. 

You swiveled in your seat, trying to find the source. You scanned the club, but felt your eyes mainly gravitate towards the center stage and the hulking presence that was seated there. 

You tried not to stare but he evidently had no problem with staring as he scanned down your body; those blue eyes seemingly taking in every minute detail of you. And in return you did the same to him. Taking in the short blonde hair, chiseled jaw and those massive hands; which sent a shiver down your spine at the thought of all of what those hands could do. 

“Oh hell no!” Tara shouted, gaining your attention again. “Don’t you dare go messing with Eric fucking Northman, Y/N. He is trouble with a capital crazy “T”.” 

“I’m not messing with anyone. But he’s gorgeous, you can’t say that he isn’t Tara.” You defended, feeling your cheeks heat. 

“Mhmm.” she said not believing a word of your crap. “I’m warning you Y/N, you're better off not even think-” Tara was cut off as you felt someone looming behind you and you suddenly realized that Tara wasn’t the only one who had gone quiet. 

“Hello there little mouse.” His voice was like sin covered silk and you felt your body instantly heat. “And who might you be?” 

You took a deep breath and turned in your seat. “I’m Tara’s sister, Y/N. '' You said softly as your eyes connected with his. Your breath caught in your throat as you took in all of him. Chiding yourself at noticing how big he actually is, so much so that you had to tilt your neck just to meet those pretty blue eyes. 

His smile reminded you of a wolf as he looked from you to Tara. “I didn’t know you had a sister Tara. And one that was this beautiful as well.” 

“She’s my kid sister.” Tara said, making you flinch at how she emphasized the kid part. 

“Does she have your mouth too?” Eric chided and you felt the slap dealt to your sister and got up from where you were sitting. 

“Yes, she does and she is also sitting right here. So if you have any questions why don’t you ask me and leave my sister alone.” You said, raising an eyebrow at him. 

He raised an eyebrow at you in return, turning his gaze back onto you, before stunning you with one of his wolfish smiles. 

“What?” You asked hesitantly.

“You are a very welcome surprise tonight, Y/N.” 

You felt a spike of bravery run through you, you’d decide later if it was a stupid streak of bravery later as you looked back up in those hungry eyes. “Is that a good thing or a bad thing?”

You watched as his tongue darted out and wet his lips before he said “ Definitely a good thing. A very good thing.”

I swear this is the last post about Charanya. Just a random fact before we start, Raya totally plans to make Charanya her royal advisor when she becomes Chief. • Anyways, this takes place a couple months after she hung out with Raya

• She was just minding her business when the soldier she flirted with last time she was in Fang found her

• Considering the fact that the last time she was here, she promised the soldier dinner only to return to Heart and never see them again, the soldier wasn’t exactly thrilled seeing her

• So not only was the soldier pissed for being stood up, they could technically arrest Charanya for not paying for the damages of the fruit stand her and Raya messed up

• Charanya bolted away as soon as she made eye contact with the soldier. And so the chase was on

• She found an abandoned tent and flung herself in it without a second thought and stayed there until the soldier’s footsteps faded away

• “So who were you running from?” *cue unholy screams of terror*

• Charanya was not expecting a fine hunk of a woman to be right behind her

• When she realized the other girl was changing and didn’t even have a shirt on Charanya began profusely apologizing for barging in and quickly told the woman she thought the tent was abandoned

• The woman, with literally no shirt on, just laughed and told her it was alright. She didn’t mind pretty girls stumbling into her tent after all

• (Charanya was NOT blushing it was just a hot day I promise-)

• The other girl then told Charanya her name was Tien and she FINALLY put a shirt on

• “so why were you running away from that soldier huh?” “Okay so um long story short I accidentally messed up a fruit stand and haven’t quite gotten around to the paying it back”

• The soldier Charanya pissed off then approaches the tent and asked if Tien had seen a girl with a braid and a white shawl

• Tien covered for her and told the soldier she saw someone like that running off into the market

• Charanya let out the breath she didn’t even know she was holding and thanked Tien for her help

• “I don’t do these things for free you know” “Oh sweet spirits fine how much jade do you want” “none! I just want to hang out with you. How about until the sun sets?” “…….I mean sure I guess”

• So Charanya got comfy on a few pillows and just well…talked to Tien

• She felt a bit weird hearing her own voice so much since she really only talked to Raya but she was genuinely enjoying herself

• Charanya learned that Tien is a Fang soldier and a highly ranked one at that, despite being only a few months older than Charanya

• “Oh my what will your soldier buddies say when they hear you helped aide a criminal?” “I’m sure they’ll understand seeing your dazzling smile” “……now you shut the hell up-“

• No Charanya was NOT blushing. She definitely DIDNT what to kiss that stupidly attractive scar on Tien’s mouth either. Absolutely preposterous. I mean, they just met!

• Tien was SUCH a flirt. Charanya could barely even breathe around the taller girl without getting some sort of compliment

• “well if she’s so willing to flirt with me she definitely flirts with every other girl she meets. Her words don’t mean anything”

• In her defense she’s best friends with Raya of COURSE she’s going to be oblivious

• Charanya was shocked to realize that when she peaked her head outside of the tent it was well into the night

• “Would you be comfortable staying here? I’m worried about you going out by yourself at this hour” “yeah alright. Scotch over I want that blanket”

• What the hell was she thinking?! She shouldn’t trust a stranger! Trust is what got them into this Druun mess in the first place! (She didn’t blame Raya, of course. She had a deep hatred for Namaari tho)

• Yet somehow she found her self laying next to this happy, muscly woman with a crooked grin that could probably save them all from the Druun

• Charanya pull yourself together you haven’t even known this girl for a full day-

• Since Charanya had wretched sleeping habits she fell asleep way later than Tien and got woken up by her early in the morning

• “Charanya are you hungry yet?” “*mumbling* don’t talk to me or I’ll kill you” “ah yes of course my cute little murderer. I’ll get you food when you wake up”

• She woke up several hours later with a fruit bowl right next to her. She chowed down without a second thought before a realization came to her. This could be poisoned! Why was she just trusting this Tien girl? Just because Charanya held a slight attraction towards her?

• Kay so it’s not exactly slight but that’s not the point here

• She laid there for a few more minutes in case the potential poison was planning on kicking in. When nothing happened, she began packing her things to hit the road. She waited a few minutes for Tien to get back and thank her for her hospitality

• “so when will I see you again? I can tell you’re not native of Fang” “what gave me away? My lack of a permanent scowl?” “Among other things. So when is the next time I will be graced with your presence?” “I come back to Fang in about three months” “what?! That’s so long from now!” “Keep on whining and I’ll make sure three months turns into never”

• Charanya left Fang with a smile on her face and a stupid fluttery stomach

• She may or may not visit Fang a tad more often after meeting Tien but that’s irrelevant-

• Raya met up with Charanya two weeks later in Fang and saw the heart eyes she gave to Tien and vice versa

• “So what’s going on with you and Tien huh? She’s pretty damn attractive” “Speaking of attractive Fang women, how’s your whole enemies to lovers thing going on with Namaari? Are you still enemies or are you progressing to lovers?” “You and I are about to become enemies if you don’t close your damn mouth-“

Reblog Etiquette (and ships)

At this point, we all know about “reblog karma” and “reblogging from source.” Though, I say that...and am questioning it. You should fucking know this by now, but in the event you don’t, let me define that shit for you.

Reblog Karma: the RPC’s oldest attempt at keeping people from clogging notifications and using others as meme resources. Essentially, don’t reblog a meme from a mutual unless you are sending them something from that meme first. Not all blogs practice it, or practice it the same way, please see their rules.

Reblogging from Source: another effort to stop being used as a meme/aesthetics resource. Many RPers would like you to reblog quotes, aesthetics, and memes from their source (original post location or the meme/aesthetics/quotes resource blog they got it from), even if you are sending them a meme. This is especially applicable when not interacting with the RPer.

Okay, that’s out of the way.

There is more to Reblog Etiquette than this!

And, when that etiquette is nonexistent, it almost always deals with a RPer’s ship. Mentioning ship partners and/or tagging ships on a reblog from another RPer, not removing that RPer’s mentions or tags, and even dropping a mention or outright RPing in the comments of another RPer’s reblog.

Don’t reblog from another mun and tag your ship or mention (@) your ship partner(s).

Don’t reblog a post with someone else’s mention still stuck to it.

Don’t reblog a post and leave the previous mun’s tags still in the tags.

Don’t go into the comments on someone’s post and mention your ship partner(s).

Don’t roleplay in the comments of someone else’s post.

None of this is alright, I have no idea what would make anyone think this is appropriate reblog etiquette, but it very much is not. It’s incredibly rude and lazy. Because I know that many people have similar ship aesthetics and so on, I’m not saying you shouldn’t reblog something for your own ships that a mutual has for theirs. (That’s a whole other in depth conversation we’ll have later.)

I’m saying that this is how you should be going about it:

Reblog from the source.

-What if there is no source because it’s deactivated, or there is another reason why I can’t access it? 

Go into the post’s notes. At some point, damn near every post that could be used as an aesthetic, quote, or prompt for a ship (and RP in general) has been reblogged by at least one source blog. Look for RP meme, aesthetic, help, and other resource blog urls. If you cannot find one of those, look for urls that are general resource-style blogs. Personal blogs reblog aesthetics etc. as well, and there are many such resource blogs out there. -If you’re uncomfortable reblogging from a personal, that’s tough shit; I hate to break it to you, but most of your resources came from personal blogs. Deal with it, or don’t reblog anything you can’t find filtered through a RP specific resource.

-- “But this takes time/effort lol I just want to use it for my ship.” Again, tough shit. Sometimes, it does take energy not to be rude and do the right the thing. In all honesty, it’s fairly rare that doing the right thing is effortless, even when it’s something as simple as RP. Grow up.

Just because it’s a rare occurrence doesn’t mean it’s impossible. I know this one isn’t, I’ve had it happen too! My choice was to not reblog it at all, I just sent the link to my ship partner privately instead. If you don’t have that kind of friendship, you really wanted it on the dash, or another reason, you are now left with one option, and you’re not going to like it. Message the mutual you want to reblog from. Politely, explain that you’d like to reblog the post for your ship, and ask if they’re comfortable with it. No guilting, begging, or general, weird ass rudeness. If they decline, accept it just as politely, thank them for their response. If they accept, thank them, and especially if this isn’t a mutual you interact with much, be sure you’re showing them continued support on the dash by reading and liking/commenting on their headcanon posts and other appropriate material. (You should be anyway.)

Remove any mentions present (@’s)

Seriously, this is incredibly rude! Yet, with the typical lack of self-reflection and awareness of others in the RPC here, I see it multiple times a day on my dash. Not just with RP-blog-to-RP-blog interaction either, I also see RPers reblogging from personals and leaving their mentions attached. (I see it the other way around too, but I’m not here to school personal blogs.) For all the excessive emphasis RPers put on appearance, you’d think they’d want to get rid of something that looks this sloppy, but no. Not if it takes one extra second of effort!

-I know that xkit’s editable reblogs tends to break whenever tumblr gives us a new, exciting, hideous, insulting, limitation, I mean update, but come the fuck on. It is also one of the quickest things to regain functionality, so, maybe you should save the reblog to drafts, be following xkit’s blog for updates, and edit it once there has been a patch. If it’s worth it to you, it’s worth a short wait. When it’s working, you can easily remove that mention with editable reblogs.

--If you’re going to use being mobile as an excuse, or if you don’t want to wait on it/don’t use xkit, again, go to the source. And, also again, if that isn’t an option, you can find where it has been reblogged by an appropriate blog at some point in its history, sans mentions. Reblog from there.

Do not reblog someone else’s tags (#)

Some people have their xkit set up to reblog automatically with the previous poster’s tags. While that can be useful in some situations, I can think of, very literally, no situation this is appropriate for an RPer to use. If you have this set up on your personal/resource blog/wtfe and your RP blog is a sideblog (or you are using certain methods of having your browser open to two separate blog accounts where your xkit settings are transferring over), it’s up to you to delete the tags on these posts.

-It takes maybe one full second to click in the tag field and hit your delete button a few times to clear it. Do that. It’s never, ever, appropriate to keep someone’s ship, muse, verse, or other personalized tags attached to a reblog.

--If you are a personal blog reading this somehow, maybe you’re wanting to get into RP, please take note of this. This is one of the many reasons why most RPers will not interact with personals. We don’t like you reblogging an aesthetic post and keeping our tags on it.

In the case of both situations, not only is it rude and lazy, it’s fucking with someone else’s tags and privacy. Most RPers don’t want their content showing up in generally searchable tags, it’s one of the reasons that personalizing tags came about. Furthermore, if I’m on my dash and click a mutual’s custom tag for aesthetics, verses, ships, and so on, it’s now going to come up with instances of those tags on someone else’s blog as well.

Delete the fucking tags if they auto-populate. Don’t use someone else’s custom tags of your own volition either.

“Subverting” reblogs to mention in comments is a hard no, too

-So, you don’t want to reblog the post, but do want to @ your ship partner(s) in it? There’s no way to do that without being rude and strange. To be honest, this is even worse than just reblogging and tagging your ship.

I may not be the OP, but you came onto a post on my blog, one very likely tagged for my ships and/or having my ship partners mentioned on it, and commented on it mentioning your ship partner. It’s every bit as offensive and more so than someone reblogging from me and using it for a ship I’m not a part of. I don’t know what’s worse, when that other mun is a ship partner, casual mutual who doesn’t interact, or a writing partner but not ship partner. It’s all deeply fucked up. No one’s RP blog is here for your use like this!

--You’re also not subverting anything. I think the idea is to be polite or go unnoticed. People seem to lack a basic grasp on how tumblr works; you get notifications on reblogged posts you are not the OP of when someone comments on them just like you get a notif when someone likes it. The only way to genuinely be secretive about this would be to comment on it from the source or a resource blog. They will get the notification.

If you are commenting on, liking, or reblogging a post you see on the dash, the person having reblogged it, putting it there for you to encounter, will be notified of your interaction with it.

---What I’m saying, just in case it isn’t abundantly clear, for the third time now: you’re not being slick. Your mutuals will see that you weirdly @’ed someone in a comment on their reblog. They know.

----The appropriate behavior is to do just as advised in the above points: GO TO THE SOURCE. If no source exists, find an appropriate resource blog in the notes. You may then, and only then, give that mention in a comment.

Frankly, it’s still weird, and I would recommend you just reblog it from the source to interact with it. There is always the option of sending it to the intended party by way of tumblr’s messenger or linking the post in an off tumblr messenger like discord.

I say this because it hasn’t escaped my attention that the only time I have this issue on my own RP blog is when the imagery or text is fucking filthy. As in, Other Mun didn’t want something that sexual, kinky, violent, and so on to be posted to their own blog. You need to grow up if that’s your deal. Like writing smut or violence, if you need to do it in private only, you’re obviously not adult enough to handle the topic.

Keep your roleplay where it belongs; in your inbox and threads

-It’s not appropriate to start up RP in the comments of another RPer’s reblogged ship aesthetic. (Or anything else, this just happens to be the most common.) It’s incredibly odd and offensive to look in your notifications and see that a mutual and their ship partner are flirting, or outright fucking, in the comments of a post you reblogged for your ship.

It’s just as awkward feeling and offensive when someone reblogs the post and begins full-blown RP on it. It’s one thing when it’s a post originating from an RP resource blog, or when it’s kept to something like a mention and a short line that your writing partner can start their original post in inspiration of. But...

--You know how I said above that auto-copying tags thing is one of the reasons why RPers are iffy about personal blogs? Well, this is one of the reasons why personal blogs think RPers are exceedingly weird members of fandom that need to be excluded and devalued. It’s odd, especially if you’ve never encountered RP, to see someone reblogging your quote, moodboard, or other original post and RPing on it.

Listen, we all need to RP some crack and commentary sometimes, but it’s best left in the tags or put into a new post.

---Instead of RPing (not sorry, especially if it is smut) on that post, link the image to show in a new post, and go from there.

Please remember to be polite about artists, including photographers and gifers, when you do this! Tumblr automatically gives the source of imagery when you use a link to display the picture, that’s why I recommended doing that instead of saving, then re-uploading the image as though it is your own. If you’re going to do that, even if it’s just silliness going on, give mention of the artist, photographer’s blog/site, or gifer’s blog in the tag or below the image.

Tumblr is deeply unfriendly to artists of all sorts, don’t be fuel that. When you upload artwork for the sake of RP, again, even if it’s just crack, that’s literally violating what artists ask people not to do; you’re reposting their art without permission and credit.

hi idk if youre the one to ask for this but like: how do you deal when people call you gatekeepy and keeping saying that you're wrong and they're right when you try and and correct information (kin being voluntary)? i cant deal with stress very well but it's also very hard for me to not try and correct any wrong information. do you habe any tips/recommendations? -☆🌕

My advice comes in two parts here, I think, so it’s gonna be a long post and is thus gonna mostly go under a cut.

Part one: Conflict Management

Conflict management skills are a blessing, if you haven’t taken a conflict management course then go find one and take it. It may be that you’re coming off as aggressive without meaning to, or are doing something else that’s making the conversation shut down - that’s easy to do over the Internet, especially on a hot-button topic like this. The crash course version of the conflict management skills I learned from one (1) lecture series that have saved my tail many, many times, below the cut:

Never assume malice where ignorance will suffice, which is one I try to just live by

Be Stubbornly Kind, or at least Stubbornly Polite, if you want the discussion/debate to continue

Use "I" statements, not "you" statements (ie "I feel like there's a misunderstanding here" is going to get people a lot less defensive than "you're misunderstanding me" despite fundamentally saying the same thing)

Defining terms at the start of a conversation is key to make sure everyone's talking about the same thing and miscommunications aren't happening. (Or when they come up, or when you realize you may be meaning different things with the same word)

Sympathetic, appeasing, and even apologetic language can be unbelievably useful in deflating anger before it has a chance to ruin a discussion. Phrases like “I think I wasn’t clear enough about that, sorry!”, “in my opinion, and you’re free to disagree with me, [subjective opinion]”, “in my experience,” “Am I making sense?”, and “I definitely appreciate the concern for [x]!” The only downside to this is that it can come off as passive-aggressive or condescending if overdone. All things in moderation and all that. (A very light, careful amount of humor may also help defuse anger.)

Pick out anything you agree with and point out that you agree with them on it. Literally anything. The smallest shred of a statement that you share common ground on. Anything you agree with them on, state clearly that you agree with it. This both shows that you’re not arguing for the sake of arguing (and thus makes them less defensive) and keeps you both from not continuing to argue about a thing that you actually agree on, so you can focus on the things you disagree on.

Ask clarifying questions. If you’re confused as to why a person would make an argument, don’t be afraid to ask “Do you mind if I ask you to clarify what you mean by that?” or something similar.

Rephrase their points back to them if you’re starting to get lost. This basically just ensures that you’re not misunderstanding them - and it tells them that you are listening and paying attention to what they’re saying. The phrase “If I’m understanding you correctly, and please correct me if I’m not, [rephrase]” is an underrated tool.

All of these will help aid communication by a) making sure that you’re not misunderstanding each other and b) keeping tensions lower and preventing everyone involved from getting angry/frustrated/defensive.

Part Two: When Conflict Management Fails

The reality is, after a certain point, all you can do is present information and let people do with it what they will. You can make logical arguments against logical arguments, but if someone is just flat-out disagreeing with you about the definition of a word and won’t budge on that, there’s sometimes not a whole lot you can do to change their mind. You can present your arguments and evidence as to why it’s factually wrong, why it’s harmful to keep perpetuating that, and why “this word has a definition” is not gatekeeping, but there comes a point where the argument becomes a circle with no end in sight. At that point you just kind of have to step away before it starts doing more harm than good.

You have to find your boundaries for how much argument you’re willing/able to deal with, and draw a line in the sand - not for others, but for yourself, to tell yourself when to step away - in advance, so you don’t have to make that decision in the moment.

Me personally, my line in the sand is pretty far out, because debate and intellectual discourse generally do more to stimulate me than to stress me out. That’s why I can run the antikin-and-misinformation-addressing sideblog I have in a healthy way - and it’s why I don’t recommend most people try to do that, because I’m the odd one out on that. But I made an agreement with myself when I started that blog that the day it actually started to cause me stress would be the day I put it down and never went back. The line in the sand exists, it just isn’t publicly visible because if I even get close to crossing it, I step away before I can do or say something I’ll regret.

And I’ll let you in on an open secret - as someone who runs a blog specifically to interact with those kinds of posts, the point is rarely actually to convince them to change their mind. People hit a point where they’re so adamant about their point of view that they refuse to even listen to any arguments to the contrary. The point is usually to make your viewpoint visible to the third party onlookers who haven’t made up their minds that strongly yet.

(And in an effort to try to avoid becoming that myself, and to facilitate communication, one of the other reasons I have those conversations is less to convince the other side and more to understand them - if they genuinely have an argument I can’t dismantle, I want to know what it is so I can look it over and see if it warrants changing my opinion on a subject.)

If you can’t handle the arguments, and you can’t make yourself let it lie, the answer may be that you need to leave that social space entirely or block those individuals - the block button exists for a reason. Which may sound harsh, but blocking really isn’t as big a deal as people make it out to be these days - you curate your own experience, and that’s a key part of that. Your mental health is the most important thing.

That was probably a longer answer than you were bargaining for, but I hope it helps at least somewhat.

This blog exists for about a year and half, I believe. When I started lurking without an url, that I have no idea about.

5. Why did you start your blog in the first place?

Wanted to enter the world of tumblr with my writing, AND one blog whose story I absolutely adored switched to registered users only and I simply had to know how it would end!! 🤩😅

Really depends on the day. I think I check rather often, but in the end, the number of hours would be pretty low these days... life.🤷‍♀️

I wouldn't call it a fight, I think. Exchange of opinions, maybe, that felt uncomfortable? Yeah, maybe, I didnt take our girl Sharon's development. But I hate confrontations🙈 I come here to relax.

hii jaksjdkd @\deweyducks is my children's media sideblog but this is my main so i'll send my ask from here but like...god that's so weird??? i haven't gotten to that episode yet (i'm on international dateline and cringing) but. barbara and cody were so sweet (and!!! a good interracial couple!!! that's important actually!!! why the hell would they make them cheat on each other when it has been established that doing so would be horrifically out of character for both of them) if they really wanted to put him with bailey the whole guy waits for girl after she repeatedly says no trope was not the way to go. at all (and yeah!!!!!! zack and bailey could have been something actually but i want to see where things go with him and maya once she shows up) and i actually would love to read your essay :)

(For real! Like, yeah they were super important and good!!!! but if you had to have them break up, Barbara was going to stay in Boston and Cody’s on a cruise where he’s going to be a literal continent away at any given time. They really could’ve just done something as simple as letting them have an amicable breakup because the distance was too much instead of decimating both of their characters like that)

Anyway, I love Maya and Zack a lot, for the most part, they’re cute and I adore Zoey Deutch and Zack’s good with her so my love for what Zack and Bailey could’ve been isn’t really an either/or thing, I like both ships but just,,,

Putting Cody’s terrible characterization and treatment of Bailey aside for a moment, they pretty much made Bailey and Cody almost exactly alike. There are some differences, but they’re kinda few and far between. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, you have to have some things in common with your S/O in order for it to work, but in the case of Zack/Bailey I really believe they could've been the good kind of opposites attract. Like, it could’ve turned into a situation where their differences turned into making each other better.

Like, in the case of Zack, we’ve seen in the original that he can actually do well in school (like when he went to summer school and was able to analyze Shakespeare fairly easily), he just needs a reason to really apply himself. And I mean, we know he would definitely do it to impress a girl alsdkfj (technically we saw that in the original too, when he told Maddie he got an 85 on his vocab quiz and he revealed that he tried to do well because she said she likes smart guys). Ofc, it’d be ideal if he was doing it for himself, but him actually trying in school, even if it starts as him just trying to impress Bailey, is not going to really hurt him in the end alsdjkf On top of that, I’m not sure if it’s canon or if I’m just HC’ing this, but I’m positive Cody has probably tried over the years to help him in subjects that don’t come so easily, but I know Zack, and whether we’re talking the og version or On Deck, I know neither of them would listen nor pay attention if Cody’s the one trying to teach him alsdjf He’d be way more apt to listen to Bailey, and I know she’d be willing to tutor him. And I know Bailey would celebrate his accomplishments, even if it’s as small as getting a C on a geometry quiz or something, and I feel like having someone like that, someone that shows him they’re proud of him and isn't constantly comparing his grade to Cody’s, could be enough to make him want to keep trying. (even if he isn’t always operating at 100%).

And on Bailey’s side; I totally respect the fact that she finds enjoyment in school-related things, and she definitely doesn’t have to have fun a certain way in order for it to “count” but. I feel like filling your day with only school/educational-related activities with no space in-between to breathe can so quickly lead to burn-out (especially if she goes to an ivy league, and you add that in with her going from being top of her class to being in a space where everyone was top of their class. But, again I’m getting off track). And, finding mindless, fun things to do in order to blow off steam is Zack’s exact area of expertise. (Like, I’m gonna be vague so I don’t spoil anything, but there’s legit an episode of On Deck where he teaches someone to relax and not make one thing your whole life). And I know this is adult me projecting cause she wishes teenage me wasn’t so serious, but Zack convincing Bailey to stay out an hour past curfew or skip one class wouldn’t kill her asldfjk Like, she might be upset in the moment if they get detention or something but you get out of high school and look back and you realize it literally Didn’t Matter. (i’m not being a great influence here, please don’t listen to me lklsjkdf)

Like, long story short, I just think that Bailey could teach Zack how to take things like his education and his future a bit more seriously, but Zack could show Bailey that you don’t have to take everything seriously all the time

And while we're on the subject; i know he was partially willing to keep Bailey's secret in the first episode because he wanted to room with a girl, but even after everything was revealed and Tuttweiller and Moseby were saying they had no choice but to send her home, Zack stuck up for her! He listened to her when she talked about why she wanted to go to seven seas high and how she wanted to see the world and he didn't do it for the sole purpose of using that information later in order to "win" her 🙃 He genuinely just wanted her to be able to live out her dream, and he did what little he could in order to make sure she got to keep living that dream.

Prologue

Gabriela doesn't put all her release into writing, only the things she can cloak in affecting phrases. For the rest she has her best friend and the relentless gossip they share on a regular basis. And who would ever have thought that their penchant for discussing their respective work encounters would one day be useful beyond entertainment. Not Diana, until she finds herself dialling her friend's number from a public phone box over an hour away from her current home in Barranquilla, speaking into the receiver in hushed tones. That instance it had been about Maritza, her baby cousin, asking for her help, advice, anything as she'd found herself embroiled in the biggest manhunt in the history of the country. That had been then. Now Diana finds herself in a similar position - except for the fact that now Maritza is dead, she's newly divorced, moved to Calí, and found out more than she bargained for in regards to her new employers. 

But when she calls she doesn't lead with that, just breathlessly gasps about needing her DEA client's number urgently and to please say she still has it. Gabriela's first response is to laugh - cackle really - and tease her about how her divorce wasn't that long ago but how with her useless twat of a (mercifully) ex-husband she completely understood why her friend would need a good lay finally. 

"No!" Diana rasps forcefully, even though she can't stop replaying earlier conversations of theirs in her mind. "It's not that. I'm in trouble, okay? I need him in a professional capacity." Gabi grumbles something about her own professional capacities, in that typical way that she has that has Diana relax a little, finally. She even manages a chuckle, though her ears are still blazing in a way that had nothing to do with the unseasonably warm evening. Their conversations had been very detailed indeed. There's a rustling on the other end of the line where Gabi must be searching for something. She finds it with a triumphant hum and starts reciting the number, and Diana scribbles along hastily, then reading it back to her to ensure she got it right. 

"Sorry, I know it would probably be easier to arrange a meeting." Diana starts, trying not to think too hard about Maritza. Together, the three of them had all but tricked Mr DEA into a face-to-face meeting, but Diana didn't live in Medellín anymore and would make herself suspicious by going on a sudden trip across half the country. Gabriela laughs lightly, but without mirth. 

"Don't know about that. I haven't seen or heard from him in a couple of weeks now." A genuine sigh. She'd genuinely liked him as a client, beyond his apparently impressive competence in the bedroom and good American dollars. "If you can't get a hold of him, ask for his partner, Steve Murphy, okay?"

"Okay, thank you again, Gabi." 

"Alright. No matter what else I told you, or what anyone else says, keep this in mind: he's a good man, deep down. He has a good heart, and he cares. This isn't just a job to him. You can trust him."

Diana hummed in response, a beeping tone in the line signalling that she needed to either toss a few more coins into the machine or wrap it up. "Be safe." Gabriela said, voice soft and worried. Diana sighed. 

"Thank you. I will. I'll try. Love you." 

Her words are echoed and the line disconnects. Diana took a few moments to breathe, leaning her forehead against the somewhat sticky plastic casing of the mounted phone apparatus. She consulted her watch. It wasn't that late, barely half past seven in the evening, and Gabriela had told her how late those gringo agents worked most days. It was worth a shot. She injected a few more coins and dialled the number she'd been given. It rang for a good long few moments before the line connected, a gruff, accented voice biting out an annoyed "Yes?" in English. 

"I..." 

"Hello?" 

Diana breathed deeply and tried to arrange her sentence in the foreign language. "I must speak with Agent Peña. I have information about the Calí cartel." 

There was a beat of silence on the other end. 

"Agent Peña has been recalled to the States." The voice says, haltingly, like he's not sure he ought to be telling her that. Like he's not sure why he's telling anybody, really. 

"Oh..." she deflates, "When will he be back?" 

"I don't know. I don't know if he will be. Look, can I take you to someone else? I'm actually just leaving..." 

"Murphy!" she gasps out by way of an answer. What she'd expected this to go like, she doesn't know, just that it isn't going like that at all. She catches herself with a measured breath, mind laboring over the translation of what she needs to say a moment. "I would like to speak with Agent Murphy then, please."

Another pause. She hears the soft whoosh of a deliberate exhale. "This is Murphy speaking. What do you have?" Diana shakes her head, quickly feeding the slot a couple more coins before the phone can start its warning beeps again. 

"Not on... not over phone. Only personal, face-to-face." She insists and is answered by an annoyed huff. 

"Look, ma'am..." she can just about picture the frustration on the other end. 

"I will only speak to Agent Peña or Agent Murphy." Diana insisted. "I have inside information on the cartel of Calí, and I can get more. Take it or leave it." Please take it, she thought and gripped the phone tighter in her sweaty hand. 

"Ma'am..." The exasperation in his voice was clear. "Your timing's fucking awful, if you don't mind me saying. I'm leaving the country next Monday." A groan sounded over the line, along with a sort of wet sound, like he was maybe rubbing his eyes with some vigor. "Alright, we can meet. Tell me where and when." 

She told him the address of a small roadside restaurant just beyond the outskirts of town, heard the scratching of a pen over her own hushed voice. It was a long drive, but if he started early enough he could make it by the early afternoon. "Alright, um... how do I know who to look for? Can you wear something, maybe like a specific color?" 

Diana racked her brain for a moment, finding it hard to concentrate on something so trivial. Her wardrobe wasn't exactly comprised of bright tones, either; she preferred muted colors these days. Besides, she didn’t really want to draw attention. 

"Uh, verde..." she mumbled uncertainly, momentarily forgetting what the English word was. 

"Green, okay. You'll be wearing green." Murphy supplied. "Anything else?" 

"Glasses. I wear glasses." she blurted, regretting it in the same breath. She'd taken the precaution of driving out here in order to not have her call wiretapped, but small identifying details like this could still give her away. 

"Okay, I'll make a reservation. What name?" Murphy asked, and she caught herself just in time from obeying the reflex of politeness that had been ingrained in her from childhood. 

"I can't tell you my name over the phone." she groused, irritated. He laughed a short, breathy snort, sounding warm and apologetic at the same time, which appeased her somewhat.

"Sorry, it was worth a shot. Okay, I'll place a reservation for... uh, Alvarado. 2 pm." 

"Okay. Alvarado. Okay." Diana confirmed. Briefly she wondered whether these agencies had lists of fake names to use for situations like these or whether the agents just had to make them up at the top of their heads. She almost asked, but was interrupted by the beep signalling her time was nearly up. 

"Thank you, Agent Murphy. Until Saturday." she said, then hung up.

Chapter 1

Please do go on about Doomslayer and his morals. I'm legit fascinated by him since starting the let's play I'm watching and I'd love to hear your take on him (I know literally nothing about the Doom franchise other than lots of blood and violence against demons and also badass music)

You know, a year ago when my friends asked me 'hey do you wanna play minecraft' and i said 'yeah sure' i would have never thought i would one day have a minecraft sideblog where i get questions about the personality of the main character of a shooter fps game (of all things!) that is known for its incredible violence.

But here you go:

(prepare yourself this has gotten way longer than i thought oh god, and also it has nothing to do with hermits whatsoever. warnings for language and descriptions of violence? and i assume the readmore won’t be working the way i want it to)

Ok so, Doom!

First of all, i know nothing about the old games, and i’ve only seen a minimal amount of Doom Eternal Letsplays. Most of this is based on Doom (2016). 

Ok so we all start out thinking Doomguy! It’s the guy you play in Doom. The hand that hold the gun YOU are shooting demons with. And sure, you can go trough the whole game with that mindset, but that’s boring and we are overthinking fictional characters in this house.

ID software actually managed to give Doomguy/Doomslayer a TON of personality despite him never saying a word, barely any cutscenes to show what he does when you don’t control him (at least in Doom 2016), and not a lot of other characters to interact with despite enemy monsters.

The game just leaves you little hints and snippets and that’s what makes Doomslayer so exciting to think about. Just the right levels between ‘cryptid half-god who never shows emotion and is a player-insert’ and ‘this dude’s got an AGENDA. he has PLACES TO BE’. You are him as you play, but sometimes he makes decisions on his own. But personally, i could never find myself to disagree.

First, you got the intro sequence. 

You got a unknown voice telling you: 

“They are rage. Brutal, without mercy. But you. You will be worse. Rip and Tear, until it is done.”

First of all, YO. WOW. HOLY SHIT.

The scene immediately shifts to Doomslayer waking up. He’s naked, he’s chained down somewhere, theresa SHIT TON of scars littering his arms and hands. First thing HE does, on his own behalf, is ripping off the chains by flexing a little (literal iron chains!!!), smashing a zombies head against the sarcophagus he lays in and completely obliterating said head into a bit of blood (mind you, three seconds after he woke up from a thousands of years long coma!! but we only learn that later), and then promptly gets up, picks up a pistol, and now it’s your, the players turn. This takes like 8 seconds in total. This man means BUSINESS. That’s the first thing we learn.

Second thing that strikes me is the interactions with Samuel Hayden. 

Doomslayer is patient when a computer voice tells him the status of the base. He is patient as he looks at the screens to see what is going on. (a demonic invasion, thats what). But then dear Dr. Samuel Hayden calls. 

Dr. Hayden says “Hi, i’m the boss here, i’m sure we can work together in a way that benefits us both uwu”. Doomslayer immediately grabs the PC screen and pushes it aside. His gesture says, i’m done with this. im sick of this dude. this guy is full of shit. And he’s right! And that after barely hearing two sentences from Hayden!

So the second thing we learn is that he has no time for people trying to exploit him. He hears Hayden, he has a gut feeling that this dude is a little fishy, maybe he just plain doesnt like higher ups and heads of facilities. But we learn that he IS. NOT. going to listen to this man, and his body language makes that very clear without being actually violent against the person (he doesnt destroy the Screen either! just pushes it aside very annoyed. He isn’t mindlessly destroying property here.)

This continues. 

Hayden goes ‘hey maybe don’t destroy that energy source!’ in the few seconds you dont control him, Doomslayer listens. He hesitates. He considers. Then he destroys the thing anyways. Hayden keeps telling him to stop, but Doomslayer doesnt listen. He’s got his own mind!

This was mostly about Haydens Company, the UAC, harvesting hell energy, and hurting people in the process. 

There’s a scene where Doomslayer rides an elevator. Hayden, over the comms, tells him that everyone that has died in the demon attack was a nacessary sacrifice that will bring a new future or some shit like that. the camera pans down to show some poor sods corpse at those very words. Doomslayer cracks his knuckles. he is NOT HAPPY about that, so we know he doesnt like it when human lifes are sacrificed. He destroys the communicator, so he doesnt have to listen to Haydens voice telling him lies and trying to sway him anymore. 

(then he takes out his shotgun, the doors open, metal starts playing and the doom logo is shown, but that’s more about making the player feel epic than showing doomslayers personality,,)

Now i would like to talk about VEGA, the AI that controls the mars facility. 

VEGA occasionally talks to us/the Slayer. He is very straightforward, tells us what to do and why to do it, and is generally very polite. In the story, Doomslayer listens to Vega. 

Now why does he listen to VEGA but not Hayden? 

I think it’s because Hayden tries to get him to do things that just benefit him, and Hayden is very manipulative in his words (or tries to be lol), while Vega just says (if you destroy this thing, that door will open. I think Doomslayer appreciates it when people are honest to him.

And in the end, Doomslayer on his own decides to save a backup of VEGA. VEGA didn’t ask him to, Doomslayer did that on his own. It’s not relevant to his mission, he doesnt need VEGA to go to hell to close portals and whatnot. But he does save him. Why? I think it’s because he cares. Because he’s come to like VEGA. Because Vega didn’t try to manipulate him and screw him over. 

Next up is the Slayers Testament. 

These are a bunch of writings/recordings that you find scattered in the hell levels. (i highly recommend listening to them/reading them, they are metal as fuck and give me such an immense feeling of power bc they are talking about me, the doomslayer)

These testaments were written by demons. They were genuinely afraid of the slayer. 

Quote:

Unbreakable, incorruptible, unyielding, the Doom Slayer sought to end the dominion of the dark realm.

As said, i don’t think these are purely talking about his physical strength. They are talking about his... well, mentality. His Codex. They see him as an unstoppable force. He is incorruptible. Let that sink in. Man walks trough hordes of demons and at no point ever thinks ‘yeah maybe this is a bit much’ or ‘they just keep coming this is pointless’. No. He’s unyielding. (Can you tell how much i love the words in these testaments? It’s just got such a nice ring to it.)

In battle, the Doomslayer is BRUTAL. He tears apart demons, rips their eyes out, all that. He stomps on heads like they’re water balloons and isn’t fazed at all. Nothing stops this man. (except players like me who fall off the map 5 consecutive times, but lets just imagine the doomslayer is actually like he would be if someone played the game perfectly. player skill shouldn’t be considered in my headcanons jahdjhgd) One could even argue he has fun at this, because there are some animations like ripping off a zombies arm and beating the Zombie with it, or feeding a demon it’s own heart.

I feel like that says a lot about his personality as well!

He doesn’t hesitate. He doesn’t doubt himself. He doesn’t question his cause! He fights to get rid of the demons, not just the ones in his way, but every. demon. He will go out of his way to kill more demons. You could either take this as him having fun, or him following his own moral codex to get rid of every demon, or him being a not-quite-human war machine, or wanting to protect humanity from them. 

I would say it’s a healthy mix of all that :D

In older games, there was this whole backstory snippet of him returning to earth, finding that the demons had invaded his planet but also killed his pet rabbit (Daisy), and he then goes onto a 2-game long revenge trip.Take that as you will.

The last thing i would like to mention is this post.

Please watch the video. Doomguy walks trough the rows of random human guards. This is the walk of a man who doesn’t owe them SHIT. Yes, he wants to save humanity. Yes, he cares. But he also knows who he is. He knows what he did, and what he will do. He doesn’t have to justify himself in front of these shady scientists and jerky guards.THEY owe HIM, in fact. This video emits the sheer CONFIDENCE of someone who has walked trough hell multiple times and knows none of these people could even touch him. Yes, he would never kill them. He would not harm humans. But he doesn’t care about making them uncomfortable with his presence, either. He doesnt ask for permission.

(i think by now i am using the exact same words they did in that post. really, its worth the read. i think there’s a lot of repeated things between this post and that post by now but i encourage you to watch that video. its worth it.)

Also, the impact he has on the people in this room! they trip. they walk backwards. they go quiet, stutter. they are intimidated. They know he’s technically here to help and save them, but now, standing in front of them.... just wow. it really puts things into perspective. it tells the player that all the demons that he’s killed, all that the doomslayer has done... its noted. it has an impact. 

I’m not really sure where i’m going with this anymore, but watching those NPCs react to the slayers presence just adds so much more to his character. it tells us how people see him, and boy.... do they see him. 

i think it also ties a lot into how the player is made feel, controlling doomguy. all these head stomping and limp tearing animations, the guns, people being scared, watching doomslayer destroy important equipment from first pirson or pushing open doors or whatever... it just gives me such an immense feeling of power! i can’t even describe it. (...it also has nothing to do anymore with the original question but holy shit did i love playing doom for the sheer atmosphere of it. despite me being horrible at playing.)

(at the end of this i’m realizing that all of this never addressed if doomslayer is happy and content murdering demons, or if he just wants his peace and quiet but can’t help himself every time he sees a demon. i would propose to leave that up to headcanons. mine is a mix of both but in a way that makes it not angsty. like he loves to have his calm moments, but is just as happy to rip some demon’s spine out. probably gets a little itchy and impatient if he hasn’t fought in a while.)

Blog Status: Currently Frozen

Hello guys.  I figure I needed to address the elephant in the room.  I’ve been getting questions on both this sideblog as well my main blog, so I know they’ll keep coming unless I address it.  Since this blog is more centered around the Rocklandgames, I’m addressing this here.

1.  I am aware that nearly all sites and sources related to Rocklandgames have either been deleted or shown very little activity as of late.

2. Sadly, I do NOT know what it happening.

First of all, I need to apologize for noticing some of this late.  Honestly, COVID has been causing issues at my personal work place, forcing more people to self-quarantine, and even my own coworker had tested positive awhile back.  This makes us very short staffed.  I work in a lab that’s already down a few members, and in a few weeks we basically went from a staff of 3, to 2, to 0, to 2, to 1, to 3 again.  As you can imagine, it’s been a little hectic playing catch-up when we can.  I actually got stuck last minute 2 weeks ago being the only person in the lab when I had to run THREE tests.  That was not according to plan, haha.  It was tough but the tests came out fine luckily.

In short, I’m been so exhausted from personal life matters that all the stuff relating to Rockland slipped under the cracks for awhile for me.  Additionally, I still have other personal stuff on my plate I’m more focused on at the moment (a family member’s wedding during COVID for example).

My personal take on the Rockland situation:

I genuinely don’t know what’s happened here.  Since I lost track of things online, I may have missed an update explanation at some point.  Nothing I can do about that now sadly.  All I knew last was that there was a hiatus at least for July, perhaps longer.

If it’s a private matter, my go to would have been to private message via Patreon to check to see if the creators were okay.  However, that’s a dead end since it’s been taken down.

My only concern is that hopefully the creators are all right.  I don’t know the reason for the take downs, and honestly I hesitate to speculate because I don’t want to cause any unwarranted rumors to start floating around.  I know some anons have asked me different things, but with nothing to prove here I don’t think creating a rumor mill is a good idea.

I’m sorry, I know I seem like a good person to ask because I usually keep a close watch for spoilers and such.  I just dropped the ball this time guys.

Listen, I do love the Rockland world so much.  But I also know when it’s not a bad idea for me to let go if I have to.  I’ve been more than happy with the demos and RoR games produced, as well as all the previous work by the creators.  I’m no stranger to finding creators who either a) are great artists but never have the time, resources, or full fleshed concepts laid out to produce a full game/comic/animation etc. regarding their work or b) are able to actually start up their work but are unable to finish for one way or another.

This previous experience coupled with my more pressing RL concerns has thus left me sad but calm about the whole Rockland matter.

So here’s the situation:

1) I will not be answering anymore questions asking about “why” Rockland content has disappeared because well...this post is the answer: I don’t know.  Haha, I’m just saying I’ll just sound like a parrot if I keep answering the same type of asks over and over.  Same thing if someone attempts to ask on my main blog.

2) Unless there’s more Rockland content, *shrugs* this blog will basically be frozen.  I haven’t had inspiration for any posts thanks to RL for the past few weeks.  Without new games or spoilers either, not much I can say.

3) I will NOT be deleting this blog.  I’m not really the type that likes to delete my old content, no matter how minor.  I figure if you’ve put it up on the internet once, there’s never really a way to get rid of it.  People dig up old stuff all time, even if it was once deleted.  Besides, I find it fun to go back and read through my old stuff when I’m bored.  Sometimes it can even help you improve.  I even liked that this was the first time I tried to really tackle constructing an OC slowly on paper rather than all in my head.  Oh and of course, I did manage to reblog some art from the now deleted blogs.  So I figure it’d be nice for people to look at those.  Not all of it, just the stuff I really liked.  I would have reblogged more of the artwork if I’d known something like this would happen.

With that said, people are more than welcome to stay and chill or head on out to find something new.  I’m sorry I’m a dead end on the matter.

One last bit for the creators in case they see this:  Thank you so much for all your hard work.  I had a lot of fun.  I’ll be here if you return, but otherwise I only wish for your health and safety.  If a public explanation is provided, wonderful.  If it’s private though, you can keep it private.  I’m not going to push anything.  You’ve given me plenty of joy so I’ve already been paid in spades as far as I’m concerned.  Take care, maybe I’ll see you again someday!

i see a lot of 13 yr olds on tumblr these days, so id like to share some advice i wish i had known using tumblr at age 13.

this is also probably not an original idea from me lol, someone has got to have done this before. i would usually put this under a cut but ive decided not to for now

be aware that this site is like NOTORIOUSLY harmful. you may think you’re above it or too mature for it to hurt you, but trust me, you aren’t. since you will probably not be stopped by that warning, maybe take some precautions/keep some stuff in mind to stay safe.

i had tumblr savior for my first experiences with the site. im pretty sure it still works and it’s regularly updated, so take a look into that. it blocks posts with certain keywords from being seen on your radar, and can also push/allow posts with other keywords to always be shown. i would advise getting it or a similar extension to custom block triggering/harmful content.

don’t put other/more popular users in your fandom/community on a pedestal. they’re people behind a blog, just like you are. don’t feel intimidated by the people in your own community, they are just people the same way you are a person. they can mess up at times, and so can you.

making friends is a great thing on this site, but keep an eye on new online friends’ behaviors. it is exciting to meet new people, but you want to be aware of toxic friends. same goes for your mutuals. overall, keep people on this site at an arm’s length until you’ve gotten to know them enough personally to know that they’re genuine people. as you get older you can relax on this, but as a young teen it’s better to be hyperaware than to be blissfully ignorant as you get hurt.

onto more broad things, your theme doesn’t have to be perfect. you dont have to make a custom html/edited html website theme for your blog, you can leave it as tumblr default. if you enjoy organizing that, then by all means go ahead! but don’t feel like it is necessary for your blog, most of the time you will get a new theme set up and check on it on a month and find that it actually looks terrible to you. if you’d rather just have it as a basic/default site, then that is perfectly normal.

your blog’s theme/topic is your choice, and can be uniquely you. some people have many blogs for many things, just a few, or just one with everything. it is up to you how you want to do it! the themes you choose, topics, are up to you. fads and trends are cool but finding what works for you personally is way more fun. your blog is supposed to be fun. you are supposed to enjoy using tumblr. don’t compromise that for a trend. make your blog(s) however you want, however it pleases you. it can feel pressuring to have a perfect blog, but it’s better to just make your appearance the way it would make you happy.

also, tag systems are awesome! but they are not necessary unless you’re tagging trigger warnings. always tag those! but i know a lot of people have personal tagging systems to organize their blog, which is totally cool! but again, personal tag systems are not necessary, and if they feel unnecessary to you, don’t use them. but again, tag triggering content, especially if you are asked to.

archiving/deleting/creating new blogs is a whole other process. some people like to start with a clean slate every time they switch to a new fandom, and let their old user be archived or deleted. this is perfectly respectable (and probably the right thing to do) personally, i just switch my blog over to whatever im feeling that month and people can unfollow if they no longer enjoy my blog (i dont have that big of a following on this blog). it’s really a personal decision, and if you want to restart your blog you will know when to/if you want to.

reblog art, but never “repost” it. aka dont take the image and post it on your own blog, just reblog it from the original poster. its common sense but not everyone knows? idk

if you end up having some or many followers, make sure to check yourself. appreciate your followers, respect them. they are people with blogs. just like you. don’t let a high number inflate your ego way out of proportion, it’s easy to fall into that sense of power.

respect people’s pronouns. even if you for some reason have a disagreement with them, or you don’t understand why/how their identity works, just use the correct pronouns that they ask you to. it costs you zero dollars and zero cents, and is incredibly respectful

as a young teen, don’t get involved/let yourself get buried in tumblr-wide discourse. examples of this include the bi vs pan debate, flag discourse etc. most ppl who i know who were attentive to things similar to that at a young age ended up being affected negatively by it. pay some attention to what pertains to you and also pay attention to what you can identify as right or wrong, but don’t let people’s opinions on your dash influence you in times of discourse. go and look at both sides of those kinds of debates if you’re interested, and form an opinion from there.

speaking of which, sometimes people will just post their takes on literally anything and youll come across it. take everything with a grain of salt unless there is links to proof (if applicable, not always needed). sometimes bad takes just havent had someone to reblog and disprove yet.

speaking of discourse, there is always discourse on this site in every fandom, every community. form your own opinions always, but keep your moral compass in mind. don’t compromise your morals and sense of right and wrong to enjoy certain fan-media. if something seems off, it probably is.

people make mistakes, and if someone did something kind of shitty/had a terrible take/belief (not irredemably shitty, those ppl do not need ur attention) and they genuinely apologize for the shit they did and learn from it, move on. leave some shit in the past, holding grudges isnt good for your mental health and people change. but again, always take things with a grain of salt.

you dont need a high follower count to get traction on your posts. it might help, but you can have a low follower count with high interaction or a high follower count with little to know interaction. the best advice i have is to tag what it is relevant to, whether it’s a fandom, aesthetic, etc and people who regularly check those tags will find it.

if you ever get anon hate for some reason, just delete it from ur inbox n move on. ppl who send anon hate want to see you post it and respond to it. if they said some really really MEAN shit though, it may be best to talk to a friend about it for comfort, or take a break from tumblr for a hot min. most importantly, report it, close your ask box/change it to no anonymous asks.

if at some point you choose to voice your opinion about a highly debated topic at the time, be aware that people who disagree might attack you for it. be aware, and be safe about it.

a lot of people swear by xkit. i have never used it in my life, but from the looks of it, it makes using tumblr so much more bearable. it breaks sometimes with tumblr updates, but apparently it’s worth it. again, look into it, but it’s not necessary to use the site.

do niche shit. start sideblogs without a plan in mind. make aus, make art, make writing, or make nothing at all. reblog the things you love wherever you want them to be reblogged. comment on people’s creations if you love them, they probably would love to hear how much you enjoyed it. appreciate how wonderful the better part of this site is, enjoy the free access to view and appreciate others’ creations and ideas.
