What if Morgoth's parlay was a different sort of trap?

He sends the message, dangling the promise of the Silmarils, and of course Maedhros agrees to go. Of course he brings more than the agreed upon amount of force, forbids any of his brothers from riding with him. It's a trap, obviously, but he won't drag them into death with him.

But Morgoth is counting on that. Because that means Maedhros is bringing the best of his soldiers. That everyone who stayed behind - Maedhros' brothers, those who might have been injured from the Dagor-nuin-Giliath and could no longer fight - will be thinking about their king. They will be distracted. Less defended. Vulnerable.

And then...

Maedhros arrives at the parlay meeting grounds and waits. And waits. Morgoth does not come. A coward, Maedhros thinks, and he rides back with his soldiers to his camp.

They see the smoke first. Maedhros' heart turns cold.

Too late, Morgoth's true intentions become clear. It was a trap, but Maedhros did not spare his little brothers by not letting them come with him. He looks at the devastation the Enemy has left behind and screams.

On that note, I think we need more crying Izzy. I know that that's 70% of what we do here but I think we could stand to go up to 80 or even 90% Izzy Hands sobfest. Crying is how the body expells emotions and that man has so many. He probably needs to cry at least twice a day to make up for it. The leg is gone, it took the evil with it, and now Izzy Hands cries twice a day. Not full rolling sobs, mind you. He cries very quiet and prettily about things like the color of the sky on a nice cloudy evening and he cries when he remembers the taste of his mother's bread and he cries when Ed brings him something sweet in the middle of the night, because Izzy's on watch and he'd never get it for himself. He does it after Ed's walked away, and quietly, and with his head turned towards the sea--

And, y'know, he also cries while getting railed. It's not a problem. He definitely THINKS it is. But Stede thinks it's sweet and Ed...might be kind of horny for it, if he's honest, but yeah 'sweet' is a fine way to put it too.

Would Izzy have lived his life differently if he knew that he would someday be the kind of person who cried while being eaten out? Probably not. It would have been nice to have some warning, though, before his body's response to any kind of gentleness or affection became 'SOB'.

Clark could’ve waited to come here, and if he’d actually thought, maybe he would’ve. But all he’d thought about was the idea of Conner being locked up someplace dark and secret and away from the sun, and how awful and unforgivable that idea was. 

He hadn’t considered the pacing of the accelerated aging process. Hadn’t considered that it wouldn’t have been a teenager waiting for him here right now. Hadn’t considered a lot of things, past the knowledge that Conner was locked up down here and it was wrong. 

So . . . no, he wouldn’t have waited, he knows.

not to get on my soapbox or anything but you have given me a great corner to shout from

as a disclaimer I totally understand why people will choose not to read wips and I truly think you know your mental health and what you can stand to wonder about/think about/obsess over/NEED to know a conclusion for better than anyone else

BUT as a writer who almost exclusively posts in wips, people reading them before they’re finished is my life blood and I am so grateful and it makes the writing process so much more fun for me because I know at least someone else is invested in my brainworm of a story?? someone else is enjoying it and thinking about it and I’m putting a small amount of good into the world??

the best analogy I’ve been able to come up with is like:

when you read a finished fic you’re eating a whole meal and that’s great that’s so amazing (especially if you tell the cook you liked it after you’re done). and you’re literally always welcome to eat that meal whenever you want. finished fics are like standing dinner invitations: I am always happy to have you and I mean that very genuinely

but if you read a wip, you’re keeping me company in the kitchen while I cook. and that’s sort of priceless. in some instances, you can even tell me the food needs more spice and I’ll think about it and listen!!! you’re sitting on my kitchen counter as I bustle around my space and we’re talking about what I’m doing and also how I’m feeling and maybe how you’re feeling and it just feels like community more than anything else I’ve experienced in any fandom. like you’re with me in my space as I’m creating food I hope you like. we’re both invested and it’s amazing

and I think in general that’s why wips are a lot of fun and also maybe why the waiting between chapters is fun for you - you’ve suggested that I add paprika to the pot and you’re waiting and wondering if I will, and I’m laughing and hoping you like the soup either way but also wondering if paprika will work with the recipe, and if I can add a bit to it just for you while staying true to the dish I envisioned at the get go.
