Central characters: Hyrule and Time
***
When Time emerged from the portal, he was alone; even Hyrule, who had been right beside him as he entered, was gone. He looked round to see the portal just closing behind him with still no sign of any of his boys.
He took a deep breath and let it out again to quiet the thread of anxiety that was starting to twist in his heart. It wasn't the first time they'd been separated as they came through a portal and the others probably weren't too far away. Despite that, he always hated it. Alone, each of them was more vulnerable. While they had all gone through their adventures alone - with the exception of Warriors - they didn't know anything about their current enemy's motivations or capabilities that might help them outwit or fight it.
What was more, as he carefully looked around the rock-strewn, pathless pine forest in which he stood and smelled the air, he started to suspect that they were in a new era. That was dangerous; it meant that they had no idea what was in store for them and it would be even harder to prepare.
But standing around wasn't going to solve any of those problems and he set out between the thick trees, following the slight upward slope of the ground. If he could get onto higher ground, he would be able to get a better idea of his surroundings and hopefully some idea of where the others had gotten to.
Decided on a plan, he immediately hastened his steps, ears pricked for any sound from nearby.
All was quiet.
All afternoon, he walked, slowly climbing the hillside. Still, there was no sign of life except for birds and a couple of squirrels. The silence weighed on his heart but he kept trying to brush it aside. Worrying wouldn't solve anything.
In this sort of terrain, he could be a hundred yards from them and he might not know it.
At last, as the sun was beginning to set, he broke out of the trees onto a bare, rocky slope that led up to a mountain peak in the distance, and he sat down on a nearby rock to take a quick drink of water and a much-needed mouthful of trail rations.
The mountain didn't look like it would be possible to climb; it was all sheer cliffs and the scree slopes left behind by rockslides. His gaze instead went to the valleys that carved up its sides. The ones he could see all led down to a single larger valley between the nearest mountain and another. Some were steep-sided rocky gorges, especially higher up, but most were shallower, filled with grass and thick forests like the one he'd emerged in. When he looked back with that view in mind he could see that he had indeed walked up just such a valley.
The whole horizon was dominated by mountains, though this was the largest. He was evidently in the middle of a substantial range.
That would make it all the harder to find the others.
He sighed. Unfortunately, that was probably going to have to wait for morning; evening was beginning to draw in and he knew better than to stumble around an unfamiliar mountainside in the dark. He would be no use to any of them lying at the bottom of one of those unforgiving slopes.
He took another sip of water and another careful bite of his rations and set out again, edging into the next valley over to look for somewhere to shelter.
Just as it was starting to get dark enough that he was getting worried he found a thick stand of gorse bushes. It wasn't ideal, but he'd slept in worse places and he crawled under the spiny branches into the dry hollow underneath. Here, there was a little bit more space, carpeted with a thick bed of fallen needles that not only cushioned the ground but showed that water didn't run through here. He couldn't sit up in the confined space and felt claustrophobic and very aware of how impossible it would be to fight here if he had to, but it would have to do. He pulled out a dagger and laid it by his head, then closed his eye and did his best to rest, even if he couldn't sleep in an unfamiliar place with nobody to keep watch.
Goddesses, he hoped he found the others soon.
***
By morning he was cold and felt even more tired than when he'd laid down, but he dragged himself back out from under the bushes and looked around, blinking in the growing light. It was cloudy and there was a rain cloud hovering over a nearby slope. He watched it for a moment, wrinkling his nose and trying to work out whether it was moving in his direction. It seemed to be easing away, but as he watched, something on the mountainside shifted.
His eyes widened as the shift turned into a slide. It felt like he'd barely had a chance to draw breath before half of the mountainside was tumbling into the valley below in an ugly cascade of rocks and mud.
He was running before it had even settled, scrambling across the rough, rocky ground, navigating by dead reckoning and the rising cloud of dust that was rapidly beaten back down by the last of the rain. He didn't know if any of his boys might have been caught in that and that uncertainty alone meant he had to go and check.
Even though there would almost certainly be nothing he could do.
His own feet slid on wet ground as he ran and he caught himself on a rock, his heart leaping into his mouth. Once again, he reminded himself that he would be no use to anyone at the bottom of a cliff.
Still, it was almost impossible to force himself to go slowly and carefully, zig-zagging across the slope. He could feel the seconds ticking away. It wouldn't take long to die under a rockslide like that.
The rain was completely gone by the time he got there, running up the valley to the foot of the landslide, his eye flicking over the still-settling rocks and dirt. If someone was completely buried, he wouldn't be able to -
His gaze snagged on a gleam of metal.
He bit back a cry of horror as he made out the shape, the rubies set in the hilt of a sword poking out from an ominously-still heap of soilâŠ
"Hyrule!" he gasped out and started running again.
He crashed to his knees beside the slide, only grateful for the fact that if Hyrule was still with his sword he was near the edge. Swallowing his panic as best he could, he started pulling rocks aside, forcing himself to be careful.
The second rock he moved revealed a shock of brown curls, matted with dirt and blood.
Golden Goddesses, may he still be aliveâŠ
One more rock had been mercifully keeping a pocket of air open around Hyrule's face. As he moved another, it caused a slide of soil into the space, but Time cleared that with a couple of quick swipes and held a hand in front of the traveler's nose and mouth.
Once again, he felt seconds tick by.
But just as fear and horror were closing a hand around his own chest, he felt the tickle of moving air. A breath. Hyrule was alive.
Time let out a relieved breath of his own and once again started carefully shifting rocks and clearing away dirt, revealing Hyrule's shoulders and one arm. The sword came free - the straps holding it to Hyrule's back had snapped - and Time laid it to one side, his eyes on one especially large rock that was resting against Hyrule's back at his waist.
Just then, Hyrule took a slightly deeper breath and moaned, the sound turning into a high-pitched, agonized whimper.
"Hyrule?" Time gently took the hand that he'd managed to dig out. "Link? Can you hear me?"
Hyrule twitched, pulling at the hand Time was holding. "LeggomeâŠ" he mumbled. "Won' le' y'..."
"It's OK, Hyrule. It's me, Time. I've got you. You're going to be OK."
Hyrule's bruise-ringed eyes drifted open, vague and distrustful, and he pulled at his hand again, then fell still with another whimper, his eyes screwing closed.
"Link, do you know who I am?"
Hyrule mumbled something incoherent, then his expression twitched and he made a soft choking noise. Time just shifted out of the way before he threw up.
Nausea, confusion, blood in his hair⊠Time cursed under his breath as he scuffed dirt over the vomit. He had no potions left and couldn't leave Hyrule alone in this state to go and search for a fairy. With a grimace, he wiped Hyrule's face as best he could and offered him a sip of water so he could rinse out his mouth. The fact that he was being cared for seemed to pierce the fog in Hyrule's mind and he looked up again, blinking slowly.
"Do you know who I am, Link?" Time asked again. At least he could see that Hyrule's pupils were the same size. The injury to his brain wasn't as serious as it could have been, at least not yet.
Hyrule's mouth opened and closed for a moment as he struggled to make sense of what was happening, then he murmured, "Time?"
Time grinned, a weight lifting off his shoulders. "Yes, well done. Do you remember anything about what happened?"
"We⊠w're 'bout⊠p'rt'l?" Hyrule looked around. "But⊠m'ntain?"
"Yes, we went through a portal. Do you remember anything after that?"
Hyrule started to shake his head, then moaned and his eyes screwed shut as sweat broke out across his forehead. For a few seconds he breathed shallowly through his mouth, swallowing hard once or twice, then he slowly looked up again. Time once again gently took his hand.
"Don' 'memberâŠ" He coughed and whimpered. Time gave him another sip of water and watched with relief as his gaze cleared a little more as he gradually crawled back to at least an approximation of full consciousness. "How'd I get⊠Time.. how'd⊠where's others?" he asked pitifully.
"I don't know where the others are," said Time, speaking slowly and clearly so the addled young hylian could follow his words. "The portal separated us. You're the first I've found. And I don't recognise these mountains."
Hyrule sighed. "'K," he murmured, unconcerned as ever about the prospect of being lost in the wilderness. Time couldn't help a small smile, but it faded again as he looked at the piles of rock still burying the lower half of Hyrule's body.
"Hyrule -"
"Th' othersâŠ"
"I'm sure the others are doing just fine," lied Time, keeping his voice calm. "You just worry about yourself for now. Can you tell me how you're injured?"
Hyrule stared at him.
"Where does it hurt?"
Hryule closed his eyes and Time was just trying to think of a way to rouse him that wouldn't worsen his concussion when he murmured, "Head⊠Ribs, left side⊠AckâŠ" He winced. "B-back⊠And⊠andâŠ" His eyes flew open, blank with terror. "I can't feel my legs⊠Time, I can't feel my legs!"
Time swallowed down his own shock and fear almost as soon as he became aware of it and slipped a hand gently under Hyrule's cheek, taking his free hand again.
"OK, Hyrule. It's going to be OK. Just breathe. Tell me exactly what you feel."
"IâŠ" Hyrule took a small, shivering breath and closed his eyes again. "Pain⊠pain in my back⊠something⊠twisty? NghâŠ" He twitched and his hand tightened on Time's. "It⊠d'ffrntâŠ" Another shivering breath. "Bit⊠cutty-cracklyâŠ"
Time nodded. He knew that when Hyrule healed he felt the shape of what he was doing in his mind and had seen him struggling to put the feeling of different injuries into words before. "Cutty-crackly", concerningly, was new.
"Legs⊠oh⊠ughâŠ" Another twitch. "There, but⊠tingling? Half numb? Like⊠fallen 'sleep. There's blood⊠butâŠ"
"You're bleeding?"
"I⊠don't⊠think so?" He relaxed his head against Time's supporting hand with a faint sigh and Time let him rest for a moment, wondering anxiously how much of the numbness and vagueness came from his head injury.
But his eyes drifted back to that huge rock resting against Hyrule's unarmoured spine.
An injury Hyrule struggled to describe. Numbness and tingling in his legs.
A broken back.
That was healable, but first they needed to get Hyrule free of the rockslide. Time couldn't do that alone, not without someone to shore up rocks and make sure nothing else fell on Hyrule, especially since with a serious concussion and a broken back Hyrule wouldn't be able to pull himself clear and would have to be very carefully handled.
He looked around with a frown, hoping for some sign of the others also coming to check this landslide, for some indication that there was someone nearby he could call on for help. But there was nothing. They were alone.
Well, this wasn't the first time he'd faced long odds alone.
Time took a deep breath and let it out again, then turned back to the injured boy whose head rested limply in his hand. "Hyrule, don't fall asleep, OK? I know you want to, but we need to work out how to get you out of there."
Hyrule's eyelids fluttered. "Wha"
Something about the vague tone sent a thrill of anxiety through Time's heart. "Hyrule?" He tilted his head to look more squarely at Hyrule's face. "Hyrule, can you tell me what we just talked about?"
Hyrule's eyes opened, vague and unfocussed once more. Time's heart skipped a beat as he saw that one of the pupils had shrunk to a pinprick. "Time Wha⊠where'm I?"
Normally, it was best to avoid healing when a broken bone was still being twisted out of place, though it could be done. Healing magic could do a lot to realign damage and Hyrule's magic in particular could do things that even fairies couldn't, but that was because of his excellent control and ability to sense what he was doing even if he didn't fully understand the underlying anatomy.
Seriously concussed, he wouldn't have that control. If he healed himself, the wash of unfocussed magic might heal his back out of place and permanently replace whatever had been cut to destroy the sensation in his legs with scarring that couldn't be healed away.
But the head injury was worsening, blood presumably pooling in his skull and pressing on his brain. That would kill him if left to itself.
"Hyrule," said Time, very gently cupping Hyrule's face in his hands. "I need you to listen to me very carefully."
Hyrule blinked, but murmured, "'K."
"You have a serious head injury. You need to heal the head injury. Only the head injury."
"ButâŠ" Awareness was seeping back, even if his previous lucidity wasn't. "Ev'rything hurtsâŠ"
"I know. I know. But only heal the head injury."
Hyrule stared at him for a moment, but then murmured, "OK," and closed his eyes. Gradually, a soft turquoise glow appeared under his skin. His breathing hitched and beads of sweat appeared on his brow and upper lip as he struggled against his scattered, tangled mind to control and limit the magic that he presumably so wanted to direct towards his other injuries. Time bit his lip, touched at the trust Hyrule was placing in him to follow what must have seemed like a nonsensical order.
The bruising around Hyrule's eyes faded, an odd rattle in his breathing Time hadn't even fully noticed vanished, and suddenly the traveler gasped and whimpered, his free arm coming up in a weak flail.
"Easy, Hyrule," said Time quickly, catching his hand while keeping his head supported. "It's OK. It's me, Time. I'm here."
Hyrule's eyes flew open, clear and present at last. He saw Time and relaxed, gasping for breath.
"TimeâŠ" he panted. "My back⊠I can't⊠I can't move my legsâŠ"
Time nodded, rubbing a thumb comfortingly across the back of his hand. "Do you remember anything since I arrived?"
Hyrule blinked. "Bits⊠you told me just to heal my head injury. IsâŠ" He started trying to sit up before Time even realized what he was doing, but fell still with a heart-rending shriek.
"Lie still," Time told him firmly, holding his head and hand as he shivered on the ground. "You're still half buried under a landslide and I think your back may be broken. You must stay still. Do you understand?"
Hyrule nodded with a whimper, his breathing speeding up as panic set in now that his awareness of the situation was no longer smothered under the concussion. "I⊠Time, please get me outâŠ" he whispered. "PleaseâŠ"
"I will. But you need to calm down and stay still." Time gently ran a hand over Hyrule's dirty, blood-caked hair. "It's going to take some time."
Hyrule gulped, another shudder going through him. "It hurtsâŠ"
Time sighed. "I know," he said as gently as he could. "Breathe, Link. Just hold on. I'm going to get you out of there. It's going to be OK."
He would find a way to make it true.

Whumperless Whump Event Day 12: Building collapse | Trapped under rubble | âI canât move my legs.â
OCs: Haley, Halcyon, Ria
CW: nothing major, i think
@whumperless-whump-event
It was supposed to be a safe trip. He was supposed to leave her near a less-dilapidated building, then head to the more affected areas to assess the damage that needed to be fixed. She wasnât meant to come. She wasnât meant to warn him or happen upon a poorly-adjusted foundation.Â
He took the brunt of the damage for her.
Haley groaned, every part of his body aching. He could not see the extent of her injuries without a source of brightness, but she could at least position herself to be more comfortable and talk normally. He, on the other hand, was quite trapped.
He took a deep breath, spending a moment to check over his ability to move. It wasnât the worst injury he ever had. His legs werenât even crushed, just lodged in a tight space. At a single glance, he could tell those rocks were the only thing supporting the rubble from crashing down on them.
âRia. I amâŠunable to move my legs, so you need to escape and get help first.â
âHow? How do IâŠyouâŠâ Ah. Sheâs breathing heavily. If it continued, they would easily run out of oxygen and perish. Not the best way to go, nor heroic either. Not fitting for her.
âBreathe. The building was small enough, and it was a single part of it that crumbled. There will be an exit.â A little lie wouldnât hurt right now. He squinted, examining the wreckage. A crack of light shines, though miniscule, but it was more than enough for him. âBehind you. Dig there. Be careful not to get hurt.â
Her hands were trembling. Was it nervousness or his blood loss? Still, she finds the location and gently lifts each rock, placing it by the side and repeating the action. Itâs a long process, one that was much too worrying.Â
After what felt like forever, it was small enough to squeeze through. She crawled out, sprinted off, and was gone.Â
Sheâs safe. Nothing mattered more than that.
Something heavy makes contact with his skull. He kept his eyes open for her until exhaustion overwhelmed his senses, dragging him back into darkness.
âââââ
Ria was a coward. Put on a brave face, but when it came to life or death, sheâd run away any minute. She never even asked if he was unhurt, or tried to get him out. She had to get help. The rest of the building could have collapsed right down on him, right now, and once again she would be powerless to do anything herself.Â
She needed to get help first. Thatâs what he instructed her to do. If none of the eyes around her even bothered to come out and help, then she would find someone who would.
She runs. But she isnât running away.
She meets the stranger once more, clad in armor and with that horrible concerned expression on her face. The stranger told her she was crying. She hadnât even noticed. A sign of weakness, now? No, she had to be stronger.
ââŠWhere is your caretaker?â The knight asks. She helped her before, ever the kind person in a world of people who wouldnât see what she saw. The only good adult she knew. Ria takes her hand, even if her palm was merely half that size, and leads her forward, striding the streets.Â
The knight calls for more assistance not a second after turning the corner.
She never looked back just now, never checked just how much damage there was. The building in front of her was nothing but dust and rubble. He never told the truth to her, and sounded so confident in her as well.Â
She was scrabbling at the rocks before anyone else even came close to stopping her, calling his name until her voice became hoarse. The hole she made had disappeared. No response. The woman squats beside her and starts lifting the heavier rocks, gesturing for others to help.
Ria sees the blood before the colour of his scarf, running in rivulets down his forehead. His arm twists unnaturally; the arm he must have used to try and shield her. There are so many things wrong with the situation she doesnât even know which part to start panicking about.
Her gaze shifts to his chest, rising and falling unsteadily. Heâs breathing, heâs going to be alright. The woman beside her mutters absently that it might as well be a miracle, even as her attempts to garner reaction from him donât make him shift in the slightest.Â
Miracle. She doesnât even know what that word means. She would have pestered Haley to ask about it, the stupid, stupid man who was so smart and strong, who could fight easier than breathing, who knew how to get her out before she met the same fate as him; near-dead and gut-wrenchingly helpless to his own plight.Â
If this was what âprotectingâ was, she realises, then, that sheâd have done the same in a heartbeat. He wouldnât have wanted that, but even so, she always had that same kind of stubbornness in her.

Prompts for AI-less Whumptober 2024
As promised, we're bringing you the official prompt list of AI-less Whumptober 2024 today!
We have 31 days of excellent whump prompts, with three prompts per day to pick from, fun themes, and 10 alt prompts to play around with. We hope you enjoy! Additional info + plain text versions of the prompts can be found under the cut.
FAQ and Rules
What sort of content can I create for this event?
You can create whatever you want (fic, art, edits, etc). Any fandom is allowed, as well as OC stuff. NSFW is allowed, but please tag your content accordingly! The only thing not allowed is AI-generated content.
Do I need to make 31 things to participate?
Oh heavens no! You can make as much or as little content as you like, skip days when desired, or combine prompts (so for example, write something that covers a prompt from day 1, 2, AND 3). You don't have to do the days in order either, go wild! To be considered a 'completionist', you only have to make sure that at the end of the month, you've covered 31 prompts from 31 different days, but whether you do that in 31 works or just 1 is up to you.
What are these alts about?
If none of the three prompts of a particular day are your cup of tea, you can swap them out for an alt prompt of your choice.
What are these themes about?
Just a little bit of extra fun for the mods. Like last year, we'll be handing out various badges for people participating in the event. A full list can be found here, perhaps there is a special badge or two for people who can't be completionists but who do manage to finish every single day of a specific theme ;)
How do I tag and is there an AO3 collection?
It suffices to tag your work with #ailesswhumptober for us to see and reblog it! Please also tag nsfw, since we'll be using that tag too. Tagging the day is optional but does help the mods along.
There is an AO3 collection to add your fics to here.
That should be all. If you have any additional questions, check our pinned or hit us up in the ask box. Or join our discord maybe, whumping can be a great group activity!

Day 12 of @whumperless-whump-event (late entry)
Day:Â 12 - IT'S GOING DOWN I'M YELLING TIMBER)
Prompt: Building collapse / Trapped under rubble / "I can't move my legs."
Fandom: Bungo Stray Dogs
Characters:Â Chuuya Nakahara x Dazai Osamu
His heart beat just focus on his heart beat, yeah, don't think about- don't think about /his/ death- the blood- the- the- stop. Itâs only been a few minutes- he can survive a little longer!⊠Can he though?
Fuck stop. Just focus.
Focus on what the markarelel is trying to say through his stupidly ingenious heartbeat trick. Heâs trying to direct him. They canât speak, Dazai canât yell out to him and annoy him because then thatâd risk the rest of the buildings collapsing and burying the suicidal maniac even more.
He canât risk panicking because he canât show that he cares (that'll only lead to hurt), and he can't afford to lose the precise control he has on his powers because he doesn't know where Dazai is exactly and he again risks crushing the idiot.
So just focus on his heart beat, itâll lead him to that dumbass mummy whose as dumb as he is smart. As long as his heart is beating he's alive, as long as his heart beats heâd never truly leave chuuya.
But then suddenly the steady heartbeat he was listening to begins to grow erratic. His powers grow erratic too, giant chunks of the collapsed buildings glowing red and hovering- he starts being more reckless, more desperate in his search.Â
That dumb ex-partner of his cannot die here.Â
Not on some mission that theyâd thought would be easy. Not due to some dumb ability that made it so Chuuya couldnât find him. Not due to some wannabe crime organization wanting to act threatening toward the Port Mafia.
Then- an actual message comes through,
Shrimp. -Taking so long?
âShut up, Iâm fuckin trying.â
canât get tiny brain to work? Told you, hat was eating away at it!
âI swear when I find you, Osamu- your-â
alright though! Can wait!
âYes please wait, Iâm almost there, I can find you.â
Then a lapse of silence, it goes on a kind of cycle, Dazaiâs usual annoying remarks then silence. Well not exactly silence, the heart beat still pumps through it just no real message was actually put there. But then, the silence lapses for longer.
ChuuyaâŠ
It was shaky, Dazai doesnât do shaky, not like that!
I- Can't move legsâŠ
Chuuya sucks in a breathe and doubles his efforts.
Hurts. ChuuâŠÂ
âI FUCKIN bet and whose fault is that?!â
Didnât. -beat-Â Want -beat- Go. -beat- Like. -beat- This. -beat-
Each word was punctuated with a trembling beat, then the messages stop again but this time that usually strong stead heart falters.
Then finally after what seems like forever Chuuya finally find his stupid ex partner. When the ruble lifted to reveal him, he was in horrible shape. Bloodied everywhere, his legs mangled, yet he still looks up and teasingly smiles at Chuuya before his head lolls andâŠÂ
Chuuya canât hear the heartbeat anymore.
That's when it all exploded, suddenly everything is surrounded by for a taintedâs red aura and Chuuya is lifting Dazaiâs too limp and bloodied form with him as he breaks through the rest of the ruined building.
He lands suddenly in front of the detective agencyâs doctor and trusts out Dazaiâs form.
âFIX HIM!â
The doctor, Yasono or something, gasps and so do the other agency members around them. Then he's told to lay Dazai down on a spare mat so she can hopefully use her ability to revive him. He doesn't want to let his partner go but he needs to.Â
So he does as told yet allows a piece of hair from Dazaiâs head to be affected by for the tainted sorrows while the doctor uses her ability to attempt a damn miracle.
After a few agonizing moments he waits and stares at Osamuâs unmoving chest and still blood covered form. Then for the taintedâs effect wears off and Osamuâs chest begins to rise and fall, shallowly yes, but rise and fall nonetheless. Then finally the frustration and worry boils over and tears slip out of his eyes.
âYou- you fucking asshole, Osamu,â he says shakily. âYou better recover REALLY damn fast, you owe me big time.â

Whumperless Whump Event Day 12- Alt prompt: Hangover
Tuesday's first instinct when she sees Corey is to laugh- and can anyone blame her, really?
He's clearly been out all night at the club, or at the very least drinking himself half-blind at home (slightly sadder), because he's pale as shit, and the dark circles around his eyes are initially hidden by a pair of shades. The latter would be a fairly inconspicuous accessory⊠were it not the cloudiest day San Diego's ever seen.
âJesus.â she murmurs, chuckling gently. âLooks like somebody had a good night.â

Title: "Broken Crown"
Characters: OCs (Links to view images of them can be found below)
Rating: T for canon-typical injuries

Idiots to lovers, and also idiots who are already lovers (what can I say? Apparently Visionwhisper is a great matchmaker for everyone but herself.)
@whumperless-whump-event
Dragon OCs:
Visionwhisper
Forger
Crown-of-Thorns
Anglerfish
Sleeper Shark
Nightsnake
Story beneath the cut!
âIf you liked our razzle-dazzle, my IceWing friends, our dear music-maker Sleeper Shark will be coming around with the magicianâs hat. Any amount you can give will be appreciated! We want to keep bringing our shows to dragons across the continent. And please, tell your friends! Write to your acquaintances in the Sand Kingdom and remind them that dragonets below age three get in free!â
Behind the thick velvet curtain, Visionwhisper rolled her eyes. âYou were right about Nightsnake making a good master of ceremonies, but I wish he would just stop talking.â
Crown-of-Thorns huffed and wrapped her short, wide wings closer around herself, curling into as small a ball as she could - although, considering that the MudWing hybrid was easily the largest member of the troupe except for Forger, she had limited success. âWho cares what he prattles about? The IceWings are still clapping, and more importantly, parting with some of their gold. Three moons, it's cold out here.â
âWell, it is the border of the Ice Kingdom,â Vision replied, reaching for the mug of steaming cider on the backstage table.
âIt's so cold that even if I possessed the ability to breathe fire, I couldn't, do you hear what Iâm saying, Viz? It's cold enough to freeze the cloaca off a SkyWing!â
Vision promptly coughed up some of the cider, wincing as a few drops of steaming liquid shot out of her nostrils as well. âReally, Crown?!â Both dragons fell silent and watched as the cider droplets quickly froze to ice. âYou know what, youâre right. It is cold out here!â
Vision's quip caused both of them to burst into peals of laughter. Vision took a sip from the mug and passed it to Crown, who took a gulp and sighed in satisfaction before returning it.
âWhereâd you find that, Viz? Not enough cinnamon for Anglerfish to have made it.â
Vision clicked her claws together, suddenly very interested in her talons. âOh, um, just a couple minutes ago, while you were doing the Feat Of Strength bit.â
âUh, I said where, not when.â Crown narrowed her eyes, unconsciously flashing the bioluminescent patches on her legs. âSpit it out.â
âIt was nothing, Forger brought it by earlier, Iâm sure he made some for everyone -â
âBy all the whales, no wonder you were squirming like a salamander when I brought up SkyWings earlier. Hm. And no, none of the rest of us got any fancyscales drinks,â Crown replied with a little sniff.
Vision felt the scales of her cheeks heating up. âWe - um. We should probably see if Angler needs any help loading the wagon.â
âAh, I see how it is. The only other female dragon in the troupe, and you'd rather make me work than let me enjoy the juicy gossip. I see how it is.â
âThere isn't any gossip.â
âBut you wish there were?â
âNo! I mean - well - but - I -â
âOK, OK, don't kill yourself, Viz. Great kingdoms!â The snowflakes were beginning to stick to Crownâs iridescent brown and magenta scales as she shook her head. âBesides, your reactions are telling me everything I need to know.â
Vision froze, and it had nothing to do with the snow. âYou won't say anything?â
Crown rolled her eyes. âAnd give my boss a stroke? I don't think so. Besides, with you dead - or a sea cucumber - then I would be the only one left to run the place, and youâd better believe Iâm not doing all this work by myself. Speaking of which - youâre right, we should help load the wagons, and Iâm sure that some of those crates are NightWing size.â
âHey! Iâm not even that small!â
A few minutes later, the wagons were almost entirely packed, the stage had been dismantled, and every tent had been rolled up tight.
âWe missed a box,â Vision said. âIâll get it.â
âI got it,â Anglerfish replied, already stepping towards it as he flexed his forearms.
Crown jumped over, trying to beat him to it. âAllow me!â
âAre they always like this?â Forger whispered to Vision, causing her to jump.
âDon't do that, I didn't even know you were there! ⊠Also, if you're asking if they're always bickering and trying to impress each other? Yeah, pretty much.â
Suddenly, there was a loud crack, followed by an eerie groan and the sound of splintering.
âLook out!â Nightsnake shouted, but it was too late. An enormous chunk of ice broke off from the ridge above the two dragons and hurtled in their direction. Anglerfish leaped out of the way, dropping the box in his scramble, and Crown began to jump after him. Before she could launch herself out of the path of the falling ice, her claws lost purchase on a slippery patch, and she ended up sprawled across the frozen ground as the ice smashed to the earth.
When the spray of snow and ice crystals had subsided, the first sound was Anglerfish bellowing in shock and terror. âCrown!â He plowed into what remained of the ice chunk, hoping to roll it away from her, but her cry of pain stopped him.
âCurse this moons-forsaken kingdom,â Crown whimpered, her body shaking. âI can't move my legs. I'm pinned.â
âDon't panic,â Visionwhisper said. âWeâll get you out of there. Sleeper Shark, you go find an IceWing, see if we can get some help. They must know how to get rid of this. Nightsnake, you keep her warm until we can get her out of there.â
The two dragons nodded, Sleeper Shark breaking away and flying towards the IceWing village while Nightsnake, the hot-blooded SandWing, curled up beside their trapped friend. Crown closed her eyes and nodded to him in thanks.
Forger rubbed his chin with a talon, deep in thought. He knew that he had the power to fix this, all of it, but using his animus magic was too risky, even if it meant saving Crownâs life. He would have to find another way. âIf we can't roll the ice away from her without hurting her, perhaps we could melt it.â
Anglerfish shook his head resolutely. âToo dangerous. That could kill her.â
âAt worst, she could come away with a few burns. That's better than being trapped in ice. The only dragons who can survive for long here without getting at least a case of frostbite are the IceWings - which none of us are.â
âLet's not lose our heads over this,â Vision interrupted. âYou two are talking about worst-case scenarios. Nobodyâs going to freeze to death or burn to death yet. Sleeper Shark went to get help⊠If we're lucky, one of the IceWings can tell us what to do.â
Dissatisfied, the other two dragons nodded.
âHey, guys?â Nightsnake called.
âIs she OK?â Vision asked as she stepped over to them.
âNot really.â Nightsnake held up his talons - and they were soaked in red. âI think that the ice boulder thing must have cut her up when it hit her. She's losing blood. I think it's pretty fast.â
âNo,â Anglerfish whispered.
Vision swallowed hard. âOK, we can't wait for Sleeper Shark and the IceWings. We have to get her out of there now and get a healer to look at that wound.â
âBut we can't do it without hurting her worse,â Angler said, his brow creasing in worry.
âI know, and nobody wants to do that, but it's going to be worse if she keeps bleeding like that. We have to move fast. So here's the plan: Forger will melt the ice boulder. Start at the top so the fire is less likely to touch her. Then, Angler, once it's light enough that you can lift it straight up without rolling it, you pick it up and get it away from her. Iâll grab the bandages and be ready to stop the bleeding the best I can. Nightsnake, you keep her awake.â
âIâll try,â Nightsnake replied, even though the fear was evident in his voice.
Forger nodded. âIâll need everyone to stand back a bit.â
With surgical precision, the SkyWing hybrid emitted a thin jet of superheated flame that danced across the top of the ice. The hiss of rising steam mingled with the odd sound that preceded SkyWing dragonfire. After mere seconds, almost half of the boulder was liquid, with the remains of the boulder glazed with melting water.
âStop,â Anglerfish signaled. âLet me try to lift.â
âCareful,â Forger said. âThat water could still be hot.â
If Angler felt any burns, he didn't seem to notice or care as he gripped the ice with his talons and hefted it straight up into the air. Carefully, he pivoted and hurled the ice away from them and into a snowbank.
âYou did it!â Vision cried, snatching up the bandages and dashing forward.
âGuys! Guys!â Sleeper Shark huffed, dashing into the midst of his friends. âI got an IceWing!â
The snowy white dragon swooped gracefully down and landed beside the SeaWing, tucking her wings against her body and leaning in to see Crownâs wounds. âWell, it looks like you don't need me anymore. What did you do?â
âWe melted the ice until it was small enough I could lift it,â Anglerfish replied. âCan you help her? Are you a healer?â
The IceWing shook her head. âOur village doesn't have anyone above the Fifth Circle, and we can't take you further into the Ice Kingdom without the gift of diplomacy. Sorry, but you're on your own. Good luck.â With that, the white dragon flew back towards her village, disappearing into the snowy sky.
âWell, that did us no good!â Anglerfish roared.
âStep aside,â Forger said to Vision quietly. âDoes she have any bones broken?â
Vision shook her head. âNot that I can see. I think it's just some lacerations from the sharp edges on the ice. Sheâll be OK, once the bleeding stops.â
âDo it,â Crown piped up weakly, wincing in pain. âI know what you're thinking, Forger. Just make it quick.â
Forger nodded. âStand back.â Slowly, he peeled back the already-soaked bandages.
Vision knew what was coming as soon as she heard that same odd, guttural hiss that always preceded Forgerâs fire. She covered her ears, closed her eyes, and stepped away, curling up into a snowdrift.
âUhhh⊠What's happening?â Sleeper Shark asked.
âYou might want to look away for this,â Nightsnake told the SeaWing brothers, his face wrenched in a look of pity.
Blocking out the sounds of Crown whimpering and her short claws digging into the ice, using the same expert precision and care, Forger exhaled thin yet strong bursts of fire to cauterize each of the wounds.
âIt's done,â he said finally. âYou still all right?
âA little grossed out, but Iâll live!â Nightsnake quipped.
Despite her ordeal, Crown still had plenty of strength left to swat the SandWing. âShut up, you!â Then she chuckled. âDownside of being half MudWing and half SeaWing: I can't breathe fire, no matter what temperature I am. But the upside?â She tapped her brown scales, which were already beginning to heal over. âFireproof scales. I came from a blood egg. Comes in handy, every now and then. Now I just need some mud and I won't have anything to worry about.â
Vision smiled. âThen let's get out of here! What are we waiting for?â
âGuess the wagonâs already packed,â Crown grunted. âOh wait, it's not.â Dragging herself to her feet, she grabbed the box that Angler had dropped (and which everyone had forgotten) and chucked it onto the last wagon. âThere. Gotta do everything myself, don't I?â
Anglerfish wrapped his tail around hers and squeezed her tight. âDon't ever do that to me again.â
âOuch, get off me, squid-brain!â
Forger scoffed in disbelief. âThey really are always like that.â
Vision nodded. âLike nothing ever happened. Unbelievable!â
Forger didn't know what came over him then. He saw the snowflakes sticking to her deep purple scales, and for the first time, he noticed the faint silvery sheen on two teardrop-shaped scales around her eyes, and it was like time seemed to slow around them. Gently, he pressed the side of his snout against hers.
With a quiet giggle, she bumped his snout back. âYou're warm.â
He didn't even think about it when he spread his wing wide and let her snuggle against his side. He walked quietly and in awe.
Ahead of them, Anglerfish twisted back his head to sneak a glimpse of them before turning his focus back to the wagon he was pushing. âAre they always like that?â
Crown snorted. âWhat, you mean are they always madly in love and everybody notices it except for the two of them?â
âUh⊠yeah?â
âThen yes, my shining pearl. They're always like that.â

Whumperless Whump Event: Day 12 Prompt- It's going down (I'm yelling timber): Building collapse / Trapped under rubble / âI can't move my legs.â @seth-whumps
Fandom: The Promised Neverland Characters: Emma, Ray
AO3 Link!
"Ray," Emma's voice brought him back to their current situation. But the tone in her voice made him frown.
"What is it, Emma?"
"Ray I can't feel my legs, I can't move them. My legs aren't responding!" panic was seeping into her voice as he moved closer.
"Emma, calm down," he set one hand on her shoulder.
Despite his trying to calm her down Emma's breathing was still panicky. He took her hands in his and lowered his head so that they were looking each other in the eyes, a single thought in his head: what had happened?
He couldn't see any physical damage on her legs and as far as he knew she hadn't brushed up against any plants that might've caused this, and it couldn't have been something with the food since she was the only one acting like this.
A keening sound came from Emma as tears pricked at the edges of her eyes and she made a slow rocking motion with her upper body, Ray adjusted himself so that he could better support her. One arm wrapping around in a half hug as the other gently played with her hair, he initiated as much contact as he could to help ground her. That's what she needed, a grounding and he could do that.
Grounding Emma was easy, easier then when he tried to ground any of the others. Emma was good at bringing everyone else back and helping them stay present, he was good at doing it for her.
