Today on 1am Star Wars thoughts, I have a gripe about the fandom’s gripes about Padme’s blue nightgowns.

Every time I see someone talking about them it feels like it’s always based on the assumption that we’re meant to believe that this is her normal sleepwear. That we’re meant to accept the premise of a woman sleeping with styled hair and a full face of makeup and a dress with strands of pearls on it as normal, everyday behavior.

But the thing is, I don’t think that’s necessarily the case. (I mean, maybe George thinks like that but there’s a whole team of people behind every costume you see on screen and the director is not the only one with input)

Because the thing is we’ve seen other instances of Padme’s sleepwear.

Twice in Attack of the Clones we get glimpses of her sleepwear but the scene where we get the best look is at the lake house where she is wearing a pretty but fairly normal looking nightgown with a dark blue robe over it. By the time the blue nightgowns come in we’ve already seen her in normal sleepwear. So… what changes between then and when the blue nightgowns appear?

She gets married and her husband goes to war.

I don’t think we’re meant to assume that she’s just suddenly in the last couple years developed a taste for extremely uncomfortable sleepwear. I don’t think those nightgowns are really sleepwear. Padme may fall asleep in them but she’s not putting them on to sleep, she’s putting them on to spend a rare night with her husband who is back from deployment.

It’s “welcome home” lingerie.

It’s quite conservative, this is technically meant to be a family friendly movie and besides they’re dealing with the logistics of Padme’s pregnancy so baring her midriff or back probably weren’t really options and they’d pretty solidly established a language for Padme’s costuming that doesn’t involve cleavage. But I think from an adult perspective we’re supposed to recognize that the married couple who have conceived a child are having sex. And are meant to be able to add up the facts provided and recognize that a young couple spending long stretches of time apart are may be spending the time they have together engaging in activities that sometimes result in Padme falling asleep in sexy, uncomfortable nightwear rather than changing into something more comfortable.

Anyway, that’s my personal opinion/headcanon. Padme does have comfortable nightgowns, we’ve seen them, she’s breaking out the space lingerie because her husband has been away and she’s missed him and she wants to enjoy their alone time before they have kids and that time gets even more limited.

i keep thinking about nicky and that goddamn single tear he swipes away after joe says that booker's been all alone

because so has nicky, in a way, and he's only just realized how much so through uncovering the truth about what joe was hiding. it was joe who pushed for a century of exile - because he was acting from a place of deep betrayal, his passion and wounded feelings getting the best of his judgement and logic. and nicky, who knows joe as well as he knows himself, must have been aware on some level that joe would grow to regret this decision once his temper cooled. his best hope was probably that when the weight of what they'd done inevitably came crashing down on joe, his beloved would turn to him so they could support each other through it. but instead joe chose to act on his sense of regret in secrecy, without looping in his partner and eternal teammate.

how many times over those months did joe dodge the topic of booker if nicky brought him up, potentially resulting in nicky believing joe wasn't ready to talk about it yet? how many times did nicky almost bring him up anyway, because booker was nicky's brother too and his absence was just as painful for him, but decided instead he could be patient for joe? (speaking as an old married myself, it can be of the loneliest feelings in the world to know you aren't quite on the same page as your person but not feel certain about why. especially if one or both of you is actively avoiding talking about it - many times because someone isn't ready yet or because one is making a misguided attempt to protect the other's feelings or because they assume they know how the other will react. which, to me at least, it feels like a little of each could have been motivating joe's actions.)

and then, after months of concealing the truth, joe tells nicky that booker is the one who's alone in this situation?

just look at nicky's expression when he takes off his sunglasses!! that man is hurt, and the cause of that hurt is the person dearest to his heart lying to him. and humans who feel hurt - even ones who are centuries old (just because we keep living doesn't mean we stop hurting) - have a tendency to lash out and externalize that hurt. blame it on someone else, on a different circumstance. something that doesn't feel as tender or vulnerable as what the realization "the person i trust most in the world betrayed that trust" touches.

you were screaming for his head. he made his choice.

all while every facial expression and gesture telegraphs a completely different message of but how can you not see how alone i've been too?

One day

One day I hope people realize that Kitsunami already "broke through his programming" back by issue #56 of Idw Sonic

He had an entire mini arc where he dealt with being without Surge for the first time, and in the real world. He met Sonic and his friends directly, tried to work out what his purpose would be without Surge in his life (gave it a shot trying to devote himself to Sonic, seeing him as the next best thing after Surge). And when it was all said and done, he decided after experiencing more that at Surge's side is where he wanted to be.

As of the recent IDW issues, Kit isn't sticking with Surge "because of programming" and "because he just needs for other characters to friend him and turn him into a better person". He is at her side because he wants to be. He protects her and aids her because he cares about her, not just because he's serving the strongest guy in the room. And he's not interacting with others because he's decided not to give a shit about anyone else other than Surge (because from his pov, even the "good guys" are fake. From his pov, everyone is someone trying to lie and manipulate their way into pulling him and Surge to their side)

Kit already has decided what he wants to do with his life. And he decided it on his own. Not because of anyone else's wants or wishes. That's the whole point of his speech at the end of #56.

He's burying whatever his and Surge's past is and moving forward with his conviction to be with Surge because it's what he wants.

another pet peeve of mine is when people who like.... are caught up with the MSQ..... are writing fanfic of their wol..... have a blog dedicated to ffxiv.......... etc........ consistently mispell alisaie's name. like. come on. that's your bestie. you had to read her name about one billion trillion times before. i had to see an "allisae" earlier today and like... man.... what are we doing. can you even try just a little bit. just a little ok? she would be so so very sad. :(

What do proshippers generally believe about shipping real people? Stuff like creator x creator or celebrity x reader?

That it falls under the umbrella of "you should be allowed to write anything you want". Once again, it's not my personal thing. There's no real life pairing I read for, and the whole "blank x reader" is not appealing to me at all.

But I have no problem with people writing that stuff, or knowing it's out there. I saw someone a while back say that it's basically just writing about another character, and I agree with that. No matter how much a creator posts or how open a celebrity seems with their personal life, we're still only seeing a tiny snippet of their lives. We have no clue who they are when the cameras aren't recording because we just don't know them. And whatever someone chooses to write about is mostly stemming from that particular persona that they happen to put on for the world and that's it. It's completely separate from our reality because they're basically just writing about another made up character

The problem I have, and it's what I imagine most proshippers also take issue with, is when people start blurring the lines between fiction and reality. To me, there's a world of difference between posting something on ao3, and speculating on secret relationships in the comments of someone's youtube video. Or between talking about something on tumblr, and tagging the person directly on twitter.

I just don't understand people who condemn rpf and talk about how gross and invasive it is, but think it's funny to tag celebrities on twitter to bring up (what they think is) cringe-worthy fanfic tropes that people have written them into. Or people who print out fanworks to shove into an actor's face at a meet and greet and ask them what they think about it. That's where the lines get crossed, to me.

I think ao3 and tumblr still have an air of mysticism to them. A little secrecy, a little privacy. In the sense that someone in the public eye would have to put in a little work to find this stuff for themselves. They'd have to go to the site and search themselves up to find anything. As opposed to just about anyone in the world being able to force this content in their line of sight with a simple @ on a site like twitter.

So to me the problem isn't that this content exists. The problem is when people don't know how to keep fandom stuff private. Write all the rpf you want but remember at the end of the day these are real people, not your blorbos. You don't know them. It's inappropriate to say these things to them personally (which yes, also includes tagging them on twitter or in the comments of their videos). But it's also inappropriate to run up to them with other people's content just to say "look what these FREAKS wrote about you!!" And I think people either forget or just genuinely don't care about the latter.

Oscar doesn’t usually pay any mind to magicians, especially on the side of the road. So it’s a bit of a surprise that this one manages to grab his attention. He’s got curly hair and a bright smile as he asks the woman in front of him if he’s got the right card, holding it out in front of him. When she winces, shakes her head no, he doesn’t fret. The man simply says, “Oh, sorry! I meant this one,” and pulls another card from behind her neck. His wide smile distracts her from her necklace clasp opening and disappearing into the crowd. She laughs good-naturedly along with the crowd, talks with her friends as they move away and on with their day none the wiser. Oscar almost pities her. Then again, ignorance is bliss, and she seems happy enough.

The man's gaze catches next on Oscar, and he gestures him forward with one hand. As he makes his way to the front, the magician shuffles his deck, putting on a show. "What's your name?"

"Oscar."

"Oscar, I'm Lando." Lando reaches his hand forward to shake his. Oscar can almost feel his fingers ghost over the inside of his watch, feeling for the clasp, identifying the best way to open it. "Would you like to play a game with me?"

Well, Oscar's not on a tight schedule, and the man's pretty enough, so. He can play along for a bit. "Sure. What's the game?"

The man explains the game, a mostly generic 'pick a card, any card' type of show, all the while shuffling the deck between them. They proceed with the game, Oscar keeping his eyes on Lando's face. He's sure he notices with the way his lips twitch every time their eyes meet, probably thinking about how easy of a mark he is. Finally, he pulls the card from Oscar's sleeve, presenting it triumphantly first to Oscar, then to the crowd.

Oscar pretends not to feel the watch slip from his wrist as the magician pulls back. Oscar's only taken one step back when he hands the card back to Oscar with a wink, "So you'll remember me."

The change in routine gives Oscar pause before he extracts himself from the crowd. As he's walking away, he flips the card around to find a number written in sharpie. He regards it for a moment before tossing it in the nearest garbage as he passes. He briefly wonders how soon Lando will notice his newly empty pockets as he clips the watch back onto his left wrist.
