It's been about a month since I got whooping cough and I'm still feeling the symptoms because I literally can't yell anymore. I mean. I *can*. If I really really tried. But suddenly raising my voice has me choked on my breath. And when I'm talking for a long time I'll swallow every few words. It's horrible.
Anyway if you're an adult you should be getting your TDaP boosted every ten years. If you're in your early 20s like me, it's probably been ten years if not more since your last pediatric TDaP, so check with your doctor about getting it boosted. You really do *not* want to get whooping cough. It's not fun.
Also. If you have a persistent cough that feels different from any other cough you've had before, listen to your body and get that checked out. Whooping cough wasn't even top on my radar when I went to the doctor, but I had a cough that felt different from anything I'd experienced before. The characteristic "whooping" part of whooping cough doesn't usually start until you're a few weeks into the infection, and if you have it, you want to start on antibiotics *before* it gets really bad. I unfortunately got the "whooping" part of the infection just a day after I went to the doctor and started antibiotics. It wasn't fun at all and I actually thought I was going to die because I couldn't breathe. But it could have been so much worse if I hadn't started on antibiotics, and at least after I finished my course of antibiotics I was no longer contagious.
TLDR: Whooping cough is much worse than the silly sounding name suggests so get vaccinated.

Ontario's public health agency says the province is on track to reach a record number of whooping cough cases this year, the highest number in more than a decade. Public Health Ontario says there were 1,044 cases reported in 2012, and as of Sept. 9 of this year, there have been 1,016 cases reported. That's compared to 470 cases last reported in June and the five-year average to date of 98.

The U.S. is experiencing more than four times as many whooping cough cases compared with last year — a spike that some experts attribute to post-pandemic vaccine fatigue. “With the increase in vaccine hesitancy that has been going on since the Covid-19 pandemic, we’re seeing outbreaks occurring in kids who are not vaccinated,” said Dr. Tina Tan, president-elect of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Babies are given the DTaP vaccine, which helps protect against three diseases: pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus. The vaccine works well against diphtheria and tetanus, but is less effective over time for pertussis. Advisors to the Food and Drug Administration met Friday to discuss the need for more robust and longer-lasting versions of the whooping cough vaccine. Until next generation vaccines are developed, boosters are recommended about every 10 years, starting in the tween years, as kids start middle school. It’s the tweens and teens whose immunity against whooping cough has waned that are driving outbreaks in many states, experts say.

coworker with cop husband asked if i felt safe taking public transit and i almost stumbled and said “other than the fact that someone keeps sticking trump bumper stickers up on buses” before being like iiiii don’t want to open the can of worms that reveals to me this woman is a confirmed conservative. which is funny to me could you imagine if i was like “i feel safer with the homeless weirdos on the bus than i do around you and your cop husband”. while true, probably not the vibe one wants to bring to the workplace

There is a problem in Western Australia when an old disease appears because the medical staff don't recognise it.
A child died of Scarlot Fever. No one had seen it in the medical community in so long, that they did not recognise it. So it was not treated correctly. We immunise against it...it's part of the standard vaccinations.
A friend's mum died of tetanus. It was damn painful and all the hospital could do was a medical coma. They woke her on heavy painkillers just long enough to say goodbye. The damage is progressive and permanent. If you don't stop it early...well. it is so rare that they did not identify it.
Another friend got tetanus 30 years ago. He was complaining of how loud everything was...his mother in law frozen. She had been a nurse on the tetanus wards, where they wrapped cloth on wheels and shoes to not torment the patients. She got him to the hospital in time. But not before bones in his ears fused, permanently affecting his hearing and he had permanent stiffness elsewhere.
My mum remembers the children vanishing from class because of polio and how some never reappeared.
But sure. Don't be vaccinated...but don't come near new born babies as your slight cough or sniffle could be Whooping cough and babies are in danger until their vaccination at 2 months. And babies die of it. At least 3 a year in Australia. And we have had 25000+ known cases this year...

A pertussis outbreak that began in southern Alberta in January is showing no sign of ending, and case counts of the disease — commonly known as whooping cough — have skyrocketed provincially. According to a memo, from medical officers of health to southern Alberta doctors and midwives, 831 cases of pertussis had been confirmed in the province as of early December. That's dramatically higher than most recent years.  Provincial notifiable disease surveillance reports show 2023's case counts are on track to be some of the highest in a decade.

Whooping cough/pertussis outbreak is ongoing, y'all. Be safe.
If you or your kids are having coughing fits and making a whooping kind of sound when y'all try to catch your breath between fits, even if you're up to date on your DTaP/Tdap vaccines, go see your doctor ASAP.
If your child is under 12 months, they may even need to be hospitalized.
Whooping cough is not a simple cold.
Wear a mask and, if you haven't already done so, get your shots

Whooping Cough Cases Surge Among Unvaccinated Teens
Spike in Cases The U.S. is witnessing a dramatic increase in whooping cough cases, with over four times the number reported compared to last year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recorded 14,569 cases in 2024, a significant rise from 3,475 in 2023, marking the highest number of preliminary cases since 2014.

Vaccine Hesitancy and Outbreaks Experts attribute the surge to vaccine hesitancy, which has grown since the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Tina Tan, president-elect of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, notes that outbreaks are now affecting unvaccinated adolescents. Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, can go undetected, allowing it to spread unknowingly.
Underreported Cases Medical professionals believe the reported numbers likely underestimate the true spread of the disease. “For every case we find, there may be ten more undetected,” said Dr. Jim Conway, a pediatrician at UW Health.
Regional Increases Some states are seeing alarming spikes. In Wisconsin, confirmed cases have surged to 625 in 2024, compared to just 51 the previous year. Similarly, Connecticut has reported 111 cases so far this year, the highest in over 15 years.
Vulnerable Populations Adolescents and young adults are particularly affected, especially if they haven’t received a booster since childhood. Vaccines for pertussis lose effectiveness over time, necessitating boosters every ten years. Doctors emphasize the importance of staying up to date with vaccinations to prevent outbreaks.
Risks for Infants The greatest concern lies with newborns, who can experience severe complications from whooping cough. These infants may require hospitalization and ventilation due to their inability to cope with the coughing fits associated with the infection.
Vaccination Recommendations Pregnant women are encouraged to get a whooping cough booster during their third trimester to provide newborns with some protection. Babies should receive their first DTaP vaccine at 2 months, with additional doses at 4 and 6 months, followed by boosters throughout childhood and into adolescence.
Call to Action Doctors are urging the public to prioritize vaccinations. Dr. Andi Shane from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta stresses that vaccination is crucial for ensuring community health during respiratory seasons.
