Mike Stobbe at AP, via HuffPost:
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. kindergarten vaccination rates dipped last year and the proportion of children with exemptions rose to an all-time high, according to federal data posted Tuesday. The share of kids exempted from vaccine requirements rose to 3.3%, up from 3% the year before. Meanwhile, 92.7% of kindergartners got their required shots, which is a little lower than the previous two years. Before the COVID-19 pandemic the vaccination rate was 95%, the coverage level that makes it unlikely that a single infection will spark a disease cluster or outbreak. The changes may seem slight but are significant, translating to about 80,000 kids not getting vaccinated, health officials say. The rates help explain a worrisome creep in cases of whooping cough, measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases, said Dr. Raynard Washington, chair of the Big Cities Health Coalition, which represents 35 large metropolitan public health departments. “We all have been challenged with emerging outbreaks ... across the country,” said Washington, the director of the health department serving Charlotte, North Carolina. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data show that coverage with MMR, DTaP, polio and chickenpox vaccines decreased in more than 30 states among kindergartners for the 2023-2024 school year, Washington noted.
Public health officials focus on vaccination rates for kindergartners because schools can be cauldrons for germs and launching pads for community outbreaks. For years, those rates were high, thanks largely to school attendance mandates that required key vaccinations. All U.S. states and territories require that children attending child care centers and schools be vaccinated against a number of diseases, including, measles, mumps, polio, tetanus, whooping cough and chickenpox. All states allow exemptions for children with medical conditions that prevent them from receiving certain vaccines. And most also permit exemptions for religious or other nonmedical reasons.
Kindergarten vaccine rates dipped to 92.7%, down from the pre-COVID era of 95%. This is due to the increase of exemptions from vaccinations for any non-medical reason, thanks to the anti-vaxxers gaining influence (primarily on the right).

Covid-19 cases in children surge 179% amid back-to-school concerns - Published Aug 14, 2024
A recent spike in Covid-19 cases among children in Korea has sparked worry among health officials and parents alike.
The Korean Children's Hospital Association (KCHA) reported a 179 percent increase in pediatric Covid-19 cases in the first week of August compared to the previous week, with some regions seeing even more dramatic rises.
The KCHA's survey of 42 hospitals nationwide revealed that child Covid-19 cases jumped from 387 in the last week of July to 1,080 in the first week of August.
The Chungcheong Province region saw a staggering 457 percent increase, while the capital area experienced a 213 percent rise.
"This surge suggests we need to learn from past pandemic experiences and take preemptive action to reduce and defend against Covid-19 cases in children," KCHA President Choi Yong-jae said.
Choi warned that many infected children are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, potentially facilitating easier spread.
“It is important for high-risk groups, such as children with heart disease, diabetes, obesity, or premature infants, should seek immediate medical attention if diagnosed,” he said.
With schools reopening in the third or fourth week of August, there are concerns about a further increase in cases.
The KCHA called on health authorities to provide clearer guidelines to avoid confusion among healthcare providers and patients.
Adding to parents' worries is the simultaneous outbreak of other childhood diseases, including mycoplasma pneumonia, whooping cough, and hand, foot, and mouth disease.
This combination of illnesses has been dubbed a "quadruple whammy" by some parents, evoking memories of the difficulties faced during the height of the pandemic.
One parent, surnamed Lee, who is an office worker working in Seoul, shared his experience of dealing with multiple infections.
"My child caught hand, foot, and mouth disease and then tested positive for Covid-19 shortly after,” he said. “It's incredibly challenging for working parents to manage these recurring illnesses and I wish the government can consider these challenges when it tries to address the country's low birth rate.”

Whooping Cough Cases Surge, Especially Among Teens
Whooping cough cases are surging across the country, with there being over four times as many cases compared to last year. Experts believe this spike has to do with vaccine fatigue following the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Dr. Tina Tan, who leads the Infectious Diseases Society of America, many outbreaks are occurring in kids and […]

Five Times Higher Incidence Of Whooping Cough Cases Compared To Last Year
About five times as many cases of whooping cough have been recorded this year compared with 2023, returning the U.S. to pre-pandemic conditions, when more than 10,000 cases of the bacterial disease were reported annually, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Why it matters: Lower children's vaccination rates are opening the door to more outbreaks of the disease, also known as pertussis. And the end of COVID-era masking requirements and remote learning also are driving higher transmission.
Infants under 1 year old with still-developing immune systems are at greatest risk of serious illness from infections and also have the highest reported rate by age group.

Whooping Cough Cases Surge Among Unvaccinated Teens
Spike in Cases The U.S. is witnessing a dramatic increase in whooping cough cases, with over four times the number reported compared to last year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recorded 14,569 cases in 2024, a significant rise from 3,475 in 2023, marking the highest number of preliminary cases since 2014.
Tumblr media
Vaccine Hesitancy and Outbreaks Experts attribute the surge to vaccine hesitancy, which has grown since the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Tina Tan, president-elect of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, notes that outbreaks are now affecting unvaccinated adolescents. Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, can go undetected, allowing it to spread unknowingly.
Underreported Cases Medical professionals believe the reported numbers likely underestimate the true spread of the disease. “For every case we find, there may be ten more undetected,” said Dr. Jim Conway, a pediatrician at UW Health.
Regional Increases Some states are seeing alarming spikes. In Wisconsin, confirmed cases have surged to 625 in 2024, compared to just 51 the previous year. Similarly, Connecticut has reported 111 cases so far this year, the highest in over 15 years.
Vulnerable Populations Adolescents and young adults are particularly affected, especially if they haven’t received a booster since childhood. Vaccines for pertussis lose effectiveness over time, necessitating boosters every ten years. Doctors emphasize the importance of staying up to date with vaccinations to prevent outbreaks.
Risks for Infants The greatest concern lies with newborns, who can experience severe complications from whooping cough. These infants may require hospitalization and ventilation due to their inability to cope with the coughing fits associated with the infection.
Vaccination Recommendations Pregnant women are encouraged to get a whooping cough booster during their third trimester to provide newborns with some protection. Babies should receive their first DTaP vaccine at 2 months, with additional doses at 4 and 6 months, followed by boosters throughout childhood and into adolescence.
Call to Action Doctors are urging the public to prioritize vaccinations. Dr. Andi Shane from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta stresses that vaccination is crucial for ensuring community health during respiratory seasons.

With the rise of whooping cough or pertussis cases in the country, some local government units have declared an outbreak in their areas.
Pertussis is a highly contagious disease that can be spread through droplets by sneezing or coughing.
The Department of Health (DOH) has attributed the rise in whooping cough cases and other preventable diseases such as measles to the country’s need to catch up with vaccination, especially for children and infants.
While pertussis is contagious, the DOH said it does not expect the country to go on lockdown the way it did when the COVID-19 pandemic broke. However, health authorities hope that Filipinos will apply the same measures they had taken to protect themselves from catching COVID-19.

A Spike In Whooping Cough Cases In Isreal
The death in June of a 5-week-old baby from whooping cough (pertussis), and a spike in the number of reported cases around the country are signs that Israel is seeing a spread of the contagious, yet preventable, disease.
According to the Health Ministry, there were more than 2,480 cases in the first half of 2024 compared to 1,795 in all of 2023. The illness was concentrated in Jerusalem last year; this year’s outbreak has spread to central Israel and Haifa.

Whooping Park Outbreak In The Philippines
The Philippine government has announced plans to administer three million doses of a vaccine for respiratory tract infection in the next three months as a whooping cough outbreak has killed many people.
In the last five months, dozens of small children in the Philippines have died, with most of the recorded cases affecting those below the age of five.
The latest data from the Philippine Department of Health (DoH) on Sunday showed at least 862 cases nationally – 50 times more than last year.
