let's talk about andi mack's worldbuilding

sorry this took forever to make! i've been pretty busy with school stuff and i kind of lost my inspiration for a bit, but i ultimately really enjoyed writing it! i wish i could've included more pics (tumblr has a max of 10 per post), and it kinda turned from less of a mini analysis to more of an extremely long rant... but i hope it's still a fun read!

i've been rewatching the show over the past few weeks (thanks again to @disneymack for the link!), and i’ve been noticing a lot that i never did the first time around. this is really the first time i’ve watched the show from start to finish since it aired, and it honestly feels so different this time - probably a combination of the fact that i’m not as focused on plot and can appreciate the show as a whole, and also that the fandom is much, much smaller now, so there’s a lot less noise. so the way i’m consuming this show feels super different than it did the first time, but the show itself doesn’t - it’s just as warm and comforting to me as it was the first time around, if not more so.

i think a lot of that can be attributed to andi mack’s “worldbuilding”. i’m not quite sure that this is the right word in this context, to be honest, because i mostly see it used in reference to fantasy and sci-fi universes, but it just sort of feels right to me for andi mack, because you can really tell how much love and care went into constructing this universe. for clarity, worldbuilding is “the process of creating an imaginary world” in its simplest sense. there’s two main types: hard worldbuilding, which involves inventing entire universes, languages, people, cultures, places, foods, etc. from scratch (think “lord of the rings” or “dune”), and soft worldbuilding, in which the creators don’t explicitly state or explain much about the fictional universe, but rather let it’s nature reveal itself as the story progresses (think studio ghibli films). andi mack to me falls in the soft worldbuilding category. even though it takes place in a realistic fiction universe, there’s a lot of aspects to it that are inexplicably novel in really subtle ways.

so watching the show now, i’ve noticed that the worldbuilding comes primarily from two things - setting and props, and oftentimes the both of them in tandem (because a big part of setting in filmmaking does depend on the props placed in it!).

one of the most obvious examples is the spoon. it really is a sort of quintessential, tropic setting in that it's the main gang's "spot", which automatically gives it a warm and homey feel to it. and its set design only amplifies this:

the choice to make it a very traditional 50s-style diner creates a very nostalgic, retro feel to it, which is something that's really consistent throughout the show, as you'll see. from the round stools at the bar, to the booths, to the staff uniforms, this is very obvious. the thing that i found especially interesting about it though is the choice of color. the typical 50s diner is outfitted with metallic surfaces and red accented furnishings, but the spoon is very distinctly not this.

instead, it's dressed in vibrant teal and orange, giving it a very fresh and modern take on a classic look. so it still maintains that feeling of being funky and retro, but that doesn't retract from the fact that the show is set distinctly in modern times.

of course, this could just be a one-off quirky set piece, but this idea of modernizing and novelizing "retro" things is a really common motif throughout the show. take red rooster records. i mean, it's a record shop - need i say more? it's obviously a very prominent store in shadyside, at least for the main characters, but there's no apparent reason why it is (until season 2 when bowie starts working there, and jonah starts performing there). a lot of the time, though, it functions solely as a record shop. vinyl obviously isn't the most practical or convenient way of listening to music, but it's had its resurgence in pop culture even in the real world, mostly due to its aesthetic value, so it's safe to say that it serves the same purpose in the andi mack universe.

the fringe seems to be nostalgic of a different era, specifically the Y2K/early 2000s period (because it's meant to be bex's territory and symbolic of who she used to be, and its later transformation into cloud 10 is representative of her character arc, but that's beside the point). to be honest, exactly what this store was supposed to be always confused me. it was kind of a combination party store/clothing store/makeup store/beauty parlor? i think that's sort of the point of it though, it's supposed to feel very grunge-y and chaotic (within the confines of a relatively mellow-toned show, of course), and it's supposed to act as a sort of treasure chest of little curios that both make the place interesting and allow the characters to interact with it.

and, of course, there's andi shack. this is really the cherry on top of all of andi mack's sets, just because it's so distinctly andi. it serves such amazing narrative purpose for her (ex. the storyline where cece and ham were going to move - i really loved this because it highlights its place in the andi mack universe so well, and i'm a sucker for the paper cranes shot + i'm still salty that sadie's cranes didn't make it into the finale) and it's the perfect reflection of andi's character development because of how dynamic it is (the crafts and art supplies can get moved around or switched out, and there's always new creations visible).

going back to the nostalgia motif though, the "shack" aspect of it always struck me as very treehouse-like. personally, whenever i think of treehouses, there's this very golden sheen of childhood about it, if that makes sense. i've always seen treehouses in media as a sort of shelter for characters' youthful innocence and idealistic memories. for example, the episode "up a tree" from good luck charlie, the episode "treehouse" from modern family, and "to all the boys 2" all use a treehouse setting as a device to explore the character's desire to hold onto their perfect image of their childhood (side note: this exact theme is actually explored in andi mack in the episode "perfect day 2.0"!). andi shack is no exception to this, but it harnesses this childhood idealism in the same way that it captures the nostalgia of the 50s in the spoon, or the early 2000s in the fringe. it's not some image of a distant past being reflected through that setting; it's very present, and very alive, because it reflects andi as she is in the given moment.

some honorable mentions of more one-off settings include the ferris wheel (from "the snorpion"), the alley art gallery (from "a walker to remember"), SAVA, the color factory (from "it's a dilemna"), and my personal favorite, the cake shop (from "that syncing feeling").

these settings have less of a distinctly nostalgic feel (especially the color factory, which is a very late 2010s, instagram era setting), but they all definitely have an aura of perfection about them. andi mack is all about bright, colorful visuals, and these settings really play to that, making the andi mack universe seem really fun and inviting, and frankly very instagrammable (literally so, when it comes to the color factory!).

props, on the other hand, are probably a much less obvious tool of worldbuilding. they definitely take up less space in the frame and are generally not as noticeable (i'm sure i'll have missed a bunch that will be great examples, but i'm kind of coming up with all of this off the top of my head), but they really tie everything together.

for example, bex's box, bex's polaroid, and the old tv at the mack apartment (the tv is usually only visible in the periphery of some shots, so you might not catch it at first glance) all complement that very retro aesthetic established through the settings (especially the polaroid and the tv, because there's really no good reason that the characters would otherwise be using these).

besides this, andi's artistic nature provides the perfect excuse for plenty of colorful, crafty props to amplify the visuals and the tone. obviously, as i discussed before, andi shack is the best example of this because it's filled with interesting props. but you also see bits of andi's (and other people's) crafts popping up throughout the show (ex. the tape on the fridge in the mack apartment, andi's and libby's headbands in "the new girls", walker's shoes, andi's phone case, and of course, the bracelet). not only does doing this really solidify this talent as an essential tenet of andi's character, but it also just makes the entirety of shadyside feel like an extension of andi shack. the whole town is a canvas for her crafts (or art, depending on how you want to look at it. i say it's both), and it immensely adds to shadyside's idealism. because who wouldn't want to live in a world made of andi mack's creations?

and, while it's not exactly a prop, the characters' wardrobe is undoubtedly a major influence on the show's worldbuilding. true to it's nature as a disney channel show, all of the characters are always dressed in exceptionally curated outfits of whatever the current trends are, making the show that much more visually appealing. i won't elaborate too much on this, because i could honestly write a whole other analysis on andi mack's fashion (my favorites are andi's and bex's outfits! and kudos to the costume designer(s) for creating such wonderful and in-character wardrobes!). but, i think it's a really really important aspect of how the show's universe is perceived, so it had to be touched upon.

and lastly, phones. this is a bit of an interesting case (pun intended), because the way they're used fluctuates a bit throughout the show, but i definitely noticed that at least in the first season terri minsky tried to avoid using them altogether. these efforts at distancing from modern tech really grounds the show in it's idealist, nostalgia-heavy roots, so even when the characters start using their phones more later in the show, they don't alter the viewer's impression of the andi mack universe very much.

so, what does all of this have to do with worldbuilding? in andi mack's case, because it's set in a realistic universe and not a fantasy one, a lot of what sets it apart from the real world comes down to tone. because, as much as this world is based on our own, it really does feel separate from it, like an alternate reality that's just slightly more perfect than ours, which makes all the difference. it's the idealism in color and composition in andi mack's settings that makes it so unmistakably andi mack. even the weather is always sunny and perfect (which is incredibly ironic because the town is called shadyside - yes, i am very proud of that observation).

the andi mack universe resides somewhere in this perfect medium that makes it feel like a small town in the middle of nowhere (almost like hill valley in 1955 from "back to the future"), but at the same time like an enclave within a big city (because of its proximity to so many modern, unique, and honestly very classy looking establishments). it is, essentially, an unattainable dream land that tricks you into believing it is attainable because it's just real enough.

all this to say, andi mack does an amazing job of creating of polished, perfect world for its characters. this is pretty common among disney channel and nickelodeon shows, but because most other shows tend to be filmed in a studio with three-wall sets, andi mack is really set apart from them in that it automatically feels more real and tangible. it has its quintessential recurring locations, but it has far more of them (most disney/nick shows usually only have 3-4 recurring settings), and it has a lot more one-off locations. it's also a lot more considerate when it comes to its props, so rather than the show just looking garish and aggressively trendy, it has a distinctive style that's actually appropriate to the characters and the story. overall this creates the effect of expanding the universe, making shadyside feel like it really is a part of a wider world, rather than an artificial bubble. it's idealism is, first and foremost, grounded in reality, and that provides a basis for its brilliant, creative, and relatable storytelling.

tl;dr: andi mack's sets and props give it a very retro and nostalgic tone which makes its whole universe seem super perfect and i want to live there so bad!!

After doing the posts with the name meanings, I wanted to do some analysis of how the characters are named on the show, since there tends to be a lot of significance when it comes to what the characters’ names are. Some of the literal name meanings don’t really have any significance, but some do. And there is a lot that can be reflective of someone’s personality in names that they have chosen for themselves as well. 

Andi - It’s pointed out at one point that it’s not a nickname for anything, but just simply Andi. It’s a cute, original name that’s unique just like the character. Since Bex prefers to go by a nickname rather than her actual name, it makes sense that she would choose a unique name for her daughter (and can you actually see Bex naming her daughter ‘Andrea?’).

Buffy - Her name is pretty self explanatory. She’s named after a strong female character known for kicking butt. When we’re first introduced to her, just that bit of pop culture context gives you an idea of what her character is going to be like. It also suggests that at least one of her parents is a bit of a nerd, and it makes me sad that we never got to meet her dad for that reason. 

Cyrus - His name means ‘of the sun,’ and out of all the characters, his name meaning is probably the most relevant to him as a character and likely done on purpose. There are several other minor characters whose story lines directly relate to his, and their name meanings are very relevant, which leads me to believe that his name choice was deliberate as well. He generally has a sunny, cheerful disposition, is always trying to be positive, and is one of the only characters that is rarely portrayed in a bad light. 

Jonah - His name means ‘dove,’ and it’s actually pointed out in the context of the show, which I thought was interesting, since nobody else’s ever is. Doves are used throughout various cultures and religions, but generally are used to represent peace. Jonah is definitely a peaceful guy, and just wants everyone to get along. 

Bex - Her full name is Rebecca, but she makes it very clear that she doesn’t like it. Rebecca means ‘to tie or bind.’ It’s too much to get into here, but Bex is a driving force in the show and many of the major story lines happen as a result of her. In a sense, her presence ties a lot of characters and stories together.

Throughout the show, she reinforces that she wants to be called by her nickname, which is a more unique and unusual name than Rebecca, which is pretty reflective of her personality. She likes to stand out and be different and doesn’t like to conform. However, she will allow someone to call her Rebecca if it means she gets extra food, which also says a lot about her character.

Bowie - I wasn’t in the fandom when it was revealed that his real name is Steven, and it’s something that I think is kind of hilarious, and it isn’t talked about enough. Steven is such a typical guy’s name, and it doesn’t fit him as a person at all. Obviously, Bowie is a chosen nickname after a famous musician, and it’s definitely a unique and unusual name, which reflects his personality perfectly (and it just goes to show that he and Bex are perfect for each other in that regard). We never learn his dad’s name, but his mom also has an unusual nickname, so it clearly runs in the family.

Cece - Her name choice is relevant very early on in the series. When Andi can’t call her ‘Mom’ anymore, she has to choose something else and ‘Grandma’ is not an option. Celia is a more formal name, and definitely fits her character early on in the series. With her choosing to revert to her nickname when she was younger and lot more freewheeling (as is suggested with the bikini scene), it starts down the path of her character development where she goes from being uptight and even cold, to the goofy, fun loving character that we see dancing in the dinosaur costume during the finale (and now I want to do a whole character analysis on Cece).

Amber - Amber was a tough one. Her name is in reference to either the color or the gemstone, both of which are pretty self-explanatory but not really a reference to her character. There are a lot of different ways that amber is used in various cultures, with different meanings attached. One source suggested that the actual element itself helped to boost confidence. There are a lot of references to how it represents the sun. There wasn’t anything that really related to her character, and hers is the only name that I struggled to find a meaning for. 

Marty - I’m assuming that his full name is Martin, which means ‘warlike’ and originates from Mars, the Roman god of war. Considering how competitive he is, this is a pretty accurate name for him. Don’t know if it was deliberate, but it fits pretty well. Also, he’s another character that chooses his own nickname: Marty from the Party. This speaks more to his nature as a goofy, lighthearted kind of guy. 

TJ - Oh, boy. With the fandom speculation around what TJ stood for, his name is probably the most discussed out of everyone. And I need to know what Luke Mullen’s thought process was for this, and how much of TJ’s story line was planned in advance, because there’s a lot going on there and it all works together. So, obviously both parts of his name were after famous musicians. They were both unusual names, which is why TJ was embarrassed to tell anyone (and why it was such a big deal that he trusted Cyrus with it.) 

Since Luke got to pick, did they always have the idea that his parents were really into music and his mom was a piano teacher, and that TJ would one day reveal that he could play piano as well? Because Luke managed to pick a name that was a piano player with an unusual first name that was also somehow a Shrek reference. I need answers.

Also, Jagger, but I don’t know if there’s any deeper meaning to that one.

Iris - Her whole purpose on the show was to be Cyrus’ girlfriend and help him realize that he’s gay. She’s named the character from Greek mythology, who is the goddess of the rainbow and messenger of the gods. In a sense, she’s there to send Cyrus the message that he’s not attracted to girls, and instead is attracted to guy. Also, rainbows.

Plus, she has a very sunny and upbeat personality, and is a little bit like a human rainbow. I can’t help but believe that her name choice was very deliberate. The fact that it also rhymes with Cyrus is pretty awesome too. 

Kira - Oh, boy again. Other people have pointed out that her name is the female variation of Cyrus. This is the other name that I believe was deliberately chosen. It’s just too big of a coincidence to be otherwise. When researching this, I also found that if you’re considering the Irish version of her name, it comes from their word for ‘black.’ In contrast to Cyrus’, ‘of the sun,’ they are literally complete opposites of one another, dark and light. Considering the fact that their personalities are also opposites, and TJ ultimately has to choose between them, it’s some pretty awesome symbolism. 

I just think it’s really cool how deep I was able to go with some of these name meanings. Some of them  (Cyrus, Iris, and Kira) seemed to be deliberately chosen with the name meanings in mind, in relation to the character’s personalities and even the story lines. Others, like Bex, Bowie, and Cece are names chosen by those characters that are a reflection of who they are as people and how they want to represent themselves to the world. A few of them I may have read more into than was intended, but it was still fun to do. It just goes to show how different Andi Mack is from other shows like it, since there’s so much meaning in the writing and creation of the characters.

Also, I need Luke to explain everything.

Things Andi Mack deserved the time and extra seasons to do:

- develop the Kira/TJ/Cyrus storyline more. Nothing against how Minsky and her crew wrapped it up, I just suspect it was either supposed to take more than 8 episodes or those 8 episodes weren't also supposed to tie up EVERYTHING. The flow from Cyrus avoiding TJ, an explanation of how Kira even got TJ to switch costumes, their whole "friendship", Cyrus seeing Kira on the swings...alot of it got glossed over. I think they thought they would get more time.

-More rare pairs! We saw Buffy and Jonah hang out just them early on in S3, and I would love more of that - especially since they are the "jocks" of the GHC, even with Jonah's new music skills. Seriously, more Buffy/Jonah hang outs, Cyrus/Jonah hangouts, Andi/Cyrus, Buffy/TJ (basketball prep for hs anyone?), Andi/TJ, Marty/Anyone hangouts, Amber/Buffy and Amber/Andi and Amber/Buffy/Andi hangouts. The actors all are great, I would just love to see different dynamics.

-Jonah/TJ/Marty friendship.

-Walker popping back up for a while, as well as Libby

-More Amber and her solidifying her friendship with the whole group

-Giving Jonah and Andi more space and time away from relationships and that being OKAY

-more Marty/Buffy banter

-the gang in high school!

-Buffy, TJ, Marty and Jonah all having to up their game for their respective sports and struggling with it.

-Bex and Bowie as a married couple!

-Jonah occasionally pulling out the old lingo for laughs

-More Karoke please

-Acknowledgment that Andi and Cyrus are best friends with 4 jocks, 3 of whom are very ready to throw down anyone who insults their friends and Marty honestly would probably help too

-Libby coming back occasionally to craft with Andi

-Andi getting showcased as an artist

-the return of that one locker guy near Cyrus

-episode taking place outside of Shadyside

-Andi tackling life and storylines outside of her relationships and her parents

-last name for Marty and Amber! (Now THAT would be a hilarious surprise sibling twist)

-TJ and Buffy becoming close friends, helping each other improve in basketball and then going over strategies together

-Cece, Bex and Andi acknowledging all the roles they have played in each others lives and growing together

- A heck of a lot more, basically this show was great and groundbreaking in many ways, even the few times it dragged a bit it was still good. I hope Disney takes notes for future shows, but it deserved so much more than to be cancelled and axed so quickly.

Andi: 

Past Groundings: Andi was that kid who got in trouble for drawing all over the walls. She also ate glue once. Cece was not happy to find her whole wall covered in doodles or to see her tasting the glue all over her hands. Andi was a messy, artistic child.

Current Groundings: After the clothing protest, Andi gets really invested/interesting in protesting for causes that she’s passionate about. Even though Bex fully supports her protesting, she doesn’t support Andi getting arrested again for a protest against cutting art funds at public high schools in Shadyside. Then, she starts sneaking out to protests and stuff which makes Bex proud but also upset because Andi’s showing more of the qualities she did when she was in high school (creative, passionate, activist, etc.). They end up having to ground her for a long time, but they make sure to educate her on the best ways to protest and help her out sometimes after she gets ungrounded. 

Buffy:

Past Groundings: I could picture her getting into trouble at school when she was little because a kid was bothering her, so she broken one of his crayons. She also liked to complain about other kids not getting their work done which got complaints from other students. Her mom grounded her for the trouble she caused at first. Of course, she got much better later on, especially after meeting Andi and Cyrus.

Current Groundings: I don’t see Buffy getting grounded much at all when she’s older. I could see her maybe being frustrated about something and going overboard on playing basketball of running or something. Her mom would probably bench her for a while, which might cause a fight. But, as we all know, Buffy loves her mom a ton, so even though Buffy would be grounded from sports for a bit besides mandatory practices, she wouldn’t be angry with her mother for long. 

Cyrus:

Past Groundings: Okay so Cyrus is the Precious Child who is shy and nervous and tries to never do anything wrong. Of course, he isn’t perfect. For example, he got in trouble a lot in P.E. class in elementary school for not participating. He also got in big trouble when his mom tried to sign him up for soccer, and he refused to leave his room. He always felt guilty about disobeying his parents, though. Also, I can see Cyrus getting in trouble a lot when his parents went through their divorce since it can be so tough. I could see him lashing out more often as well as being more withdrawn. His parents punish him at first, but soon realize why he’s been acting out and quickly go to apologize. 

Current Groundings: I really can’t picture Cyrus being grounded. Maybe he would get in trouble for staying out with his friends. I could also see his parents being Super Overprotective and getting frantic/upset when he doesn’t immediately text them back and let them know he’s alright. If he got grounded, it would probably be over not letting his parents know where he is. 

Jonah:

Past Groundings: Okay so Jonah was totally the happy go lucky kid in elementary school who just was friends with everyone and never listened to what the teacher instructed. He would also always just want to “go with the flow” or do what he wanted to do, not what his parents wanted, so he got in trouble for that a lot. Also, as established in the show, he used to be embarrassed of his mom being in that video, so I could see him being grounded after fighting with his parents because he thought they were being too embarrassing. 

Current Groundings: Maybe Jonah gets too invested with his hobbies that he kinda forgets about school work, so his parents get on him about that. Also, kind of a sad note, but since his parents don’t know about his anxiety (which could make him less productive/unwilling to do things) they might be grounding him for not getting things done but that could be stemming from his anxiety. (After he talks to them about it later, though, it all makes sense to them and they apologize for not understanding sooner).

Amber: 

Past Groundings: She was kind of the mean girl in elementary school who liked to boss people around. She never bullied anyone, but she hated being told she was wrong. She would throw lots of temper tantrums when she didn’t get her way. 

Current Groundings: Amber is the type of person to get grounded a lot, I think, at least before she became nicer. She would always be a “rebel” but not too rebellious, either, just enough that her parents would get annoyed. That and her parents fighting drove her over the edge. She ended up getting furious at them and running off in the middle of the day, which caused them to get super upset and worried and angry. When she got back, she got grounded.

Marty: 

Past Groundings: Marty just wanted to have fun. He wanted to talk with friends and play video games and make paper airplanes and carve his name into his desk. He was the definition of the Trouble Child in school who never really cared what was happening. To try and combat this behavior, his parents attempted to ground him from something, like TV or sports, but he just found something else to entertain himself with. 

Future Groundings: Yeah I can’t really see Marty getting into trouble much now. I think that when the dumbass trio forms (WHEN, not if) that the three of them get into some crazy stuff that involves possible illegal activities (like lighting off illegal fireworks which they didn’t know were illegal or getting banned from Walmart). Then, Marty would get grounded. 

TJ:

Past Groundings: TJ would get grounded because he’d never do his math homework. His mom never realized he had dyscalculia, of course, so she didn’t understand that the reason he didn’t want to do it was because it made no sense and made him feel stupid. He also got in trouble because he lashed out at people due to his own insecurities and often acted like a bully. He wasn’t a nice kid toward others and didn’t have any “real friends” which made him angry. His mother didn’t know what to do besides ground him. 

Future Groundings: Now, TJ has had a huge turnaround. The only thing his mother has to ground him for is spending too much time with Cyrus/playing basketball that he doesn’t get his work done on time or missing family dinner some nights. I see TJ’s parents as being really cool in general, though, kind of like Bex and Bowie. I think they would be the type of parents as TJ got older especially to ground him for a few days but then forget about it.

Andi’s first day of SAVA. Buffy, Cyrus, Marty, TJ, and Jonah’s first day of Grant High school. They facetime before entering the school and wish each other luck. Jokes about how huge and old everyone is compared to them. They don’t have as many classes together as they used to. Jonah, feeling out of place, has a panic attack while getting his lunch. Andi feeling very out of place during  her lunch texts Jonah - jokingly blaming him for making her accidentally submit her application. Jonah, instead of texting back accidentally facetimes her during his panic attack. Andi, shocked and concerned, helps him calm down. Jonah asks her if she really blames him. Andi, of course says no, and reassures him that one day she’ll probably thank him. Jonah returns to lunch, the group is confused as to where he went, he makes a face and just says “uh, high school food, right?” cyrus says “say no more. please.”

At the end of the school day everyone meets at The Spoon and talks about their first day. Andi comes home to balloons, cupcake, excited parents and a grandparent, who really want to hear EVERYTHING.

Episode Two.

Andi deals with a strict teacher who is very critical of her art for the first time in her life. She struggles with feeling inadequate because she has never had an art teacher not love her work. Definitely cries.

It’s club week at Grant High School, a week where the school encourages everyone to join a club/sport, especially incoming freshman. Buffy, Marty, and TJ immediately know where they belong (basketball & track respectively) whereas Cyrus and Jonah are lost on where to start. Cyrus grabs pamphlets for theater, photography, debate, student leadership, the student newspaper and tries to create a pros/cons list for each one. Jonah feels confused about where he belongs in school, in the group, in life. He misses the old dynamic and feels lost without Andi because everyone else is in a relationship. Being a third wheel is fine, you know, and not totally useless. But there is never a need for a fifth wheel.

Club spirit spreads outside of Grant High school. Bowie decides to join a morning yoga group, Bex starts photography classes as she’s started to take ‘before/after’ portraits for Cloud 10 as well as joins SAVA’s PTA, Cece continues her dance classes.

Episode Three.

Andi finds familiar faces at SAVA. Walker and Libby introduce Andi into their friend group. Andi tells them about the teacher who criticized her art; they reassure her that she’s tough on everyone and that she belongs here.

Buffy helps Cyrus choose the clubs he should join; debate and the student newspaper. He thanks her for knowing him; sometimes better than himself. Jonah continues to have a hard time in high school - whereas the rest of the group have slowly become acclimated to the environment. He used to know so many people and now he feels like he barely knows a fraction. Buffy, Cyrus, TJ, and Marty always include him, but they seem to be so seamless together and Jonah feels like he can’t keep us. He liked when it was just Buffy, Cyrus, him, and Andi. He likes when he hangs out with Cyrus by himself. Or Buffy and Cyrus. He feels like he still has a place with them. He’s determined relationships really do ruin everything.

TJ takes Cyrus on a date and gets embarrassed by his dyscalculia when he tries to pay in cash and finds himself taking too long to count his change and bills. Cyrus asks if he could help - TJ gets frustrated at himself and says he wanted to have a perfect date with him and not look like an idiot. Cyrus reminds TJ he’s not an idiot and offers to help him again. TJ sighs and nods his head. Cyrus counts TJ’s change with him.

Episode Four.

Buffy, Andi, and Cyrus have a sleepover weekend at Cece’s house. During the first night, they almost call it off because Buffy and Cyrus can’t stop texting Marty/TJ and talking about them. Andi reminds them that she’s supposed to be one of their best friends - can’t they have a few nights where they don’t think about boys? They sit in silence for like, an hour, and Buffy sighs, turns off her phone and gives it to Andi. Cyrus follows suit. They both apologize. They have a movie marathon, talk about school, stay up late talking about the future, Andi makes them all friendship bracelets.

At Buffy’s request, Marty invites TJ and Jonah to hang out at his house. They all sit there uncomfortably eating snacks for awhile, realizing despite being together everyday at high school they barely know each other. Marty breaks the ice and they play a game of 21 Questions. We learn more about all three boys and they become more comfortable around each other.

Bex and Bowie have a date night with another couple their age. This isn’t focused on as I think it would be boring for most viewers, but I just want to show them with age-appropriate friends, pls and thank <3

Episode Five.

Andi talks to Walker about his relationship with her and his relationship with Buffy. They reconcile with the past and admit they were pretty dumb as middle schoolers, huh? Andi says yes and then says “we’ll probably think that about ourselves now one day, won’t we?” Walker says “definitely.”

Cyrus asks Jonah why he’s been so out of it recently. Jonah claims that he’s not and they get into an argument, leading Jonah to say “I liked it better when no one was together. I’m not part of this group!” Jonah leaves lunch early, bumping into Amber. She can tell how upset he is. They sit against some lockers in a quiet hallway and talk. Amber tells him sometimes groups change. Jonah says he hates change and just wants everything to be how it was before. Amber says he feels like that now, but reminds him that he felt that way when they were in a relationship too, and would he still really want to be with her? Jonah says no (no offense) and that he guessed some changes were okay. Amber seems to have reconciled with their past and is okay being friends with him. Jonah says “Sometimes I wonder what’s wrong with me.” Amber tells him that she goes to therapy because she felt that way too. He asks if she found the answer. She says yes, and that she finds the solutions too.

Jonah texts Cyrus that he’s sorry. During gym class, he asks to go to the guidance counselor. The guidance counselor talks to Jonah and helps him come to terms with going to therapy and what to expect.

Episode Six.

Libby is angry and upset because they haven’t given her an interpreter yet and she’s struggling to keep up with the coursework and feels ostracized by her teachers. For a group project, Walker, Andi and Libby team up to create an art piece encompassing deaf culture and how deaf rights matter. They bring it to the principal’s office and tell them it’s illegal to not provide Libby an interpreter. 

At Grant, Cyrus goes against a homophobic debater during a practice round (probably about either marriage laws or the guy who refused to bake a cake). He loses because he can’t keep his points straight due to getting too upset. He immediately texts TJ. TJ gets really angry and meets him at the debate room - they go to a hidden, empty corner of the high school. Cyrus cries, TJ comforts him with hugs and head kisses. Cyrus says he hates hiding who he is. TJ says he does too. Cyrus asks to come out publicly. TJ hesitates. “I don’t know if I’m ready?” Cyrus sighs. “Fine...but I’m going to come out to my parents. They don’t have to know about us, though.”

Cyrus gathers all 4 parents in the same room and comes out.

TJ thinks about coming out to his parents, but backs out.

Episode Seven.

Bowie tries to get the Mack family on a vegan diet after learning more about it during his morning yoga class. Andi is pretty accepting of it, but Bex struggles to maintain the diet. Bowie teaching them about how much meat can affect the environment. He makes them try a whole week with no meat and dairy - Bex starts sneaking to Cece’s to eat pizza, burgers, and ice cream.

Buffy notices Marty liking and commenting on two different “cute”/”model-type” girls pictures on social media. They’re both white. She texts Cyrus. Cyrus asks if maybe they’re related, but none of them share his last name. She also overheard a group of older girls talking about how real guys hate “athletic” girls and stop liking them after middle school. Buffy gets jealous, uncomfortable, and insecure. She stops talking to him and ignores during school. At the end of the week, she straightens her hair again and dresses more traditionally feminine. Marty notices and says “you look great, but...what’s up?” Buffy admits that she thought he would like her better this way. Marty asks why - she says that she found out he’s been liking other girls’ pictures and that none of them looked like her. Marty gets embarrassed and says that those girls are his future step-sisters and that his father, Antonio Sousa, just proposed and started egging him to be “nicer” and get closer to the girls. Buffy feels embarrassed. Marty assures her that she doesn’t have to be, that he should have told her and that he barely talked about his family because he thinks it’s “too messy” - he says she looks the most beautiful when she’s comfortable with herself.

Bex admits to Bowie that she’s been sneaking non-vegan food. He’s upset at first, but they come to a compromise. They will have three meatless nights instead of every single day. He understands that it’s a huge life-style change and admits that he’s cheated a little bit too, but that the environment is really important to him because “I want Andi to be able to enjoy this Earth to the fullest...and any other kid we might have.”

Bex says ‘um’

Episode Eight.

Marty, Jonah, and TJ hang out again. This time is more personal - Jonah talks about therapy and Marty talk about his changing family. Since they’re being personal, TJ admits that he’s struggling to tell his family and the wider school that he’s gay and dating Cyrus. The boys listen and try to give advice, but ultimately feel like they can’t really help and say that they’re sure Cyrus understands. TJ nods. “He understands for now, but eventually he won’t want to be with someone in the closet. He wants to be himself.”

Andi and Amber hang out for the first time in forever. Amber admits that she’s just been so bogged down because she’s taking college classes, stressing herself out plus family drama. Andi says that she’s been pretty stressed too and that the classes and projects are a lot harder than she imagined and that she misses always being with the GHC. Amber says that change is necessary and that distance makes the heart grow fonder and that she bet Andi is the best in the school, that she’s just being hard on herself. Andi shows Amber pictures of other’s art - Amber smiles and says that “yours is still the best, bambi.” Andi thanks Amber for being such a great friend.

Cyrus and TJ are distant and haven’t had their weekly date or even really texted. During basketball practice, TJ is frustrated and awful. The teammates ask where Cyrus is, saying that he’s almost always there for their practice as their good luck charm. TJ ignores the question and tries to shoot a three-pointer, missing over and over again. The teammates tell him to chill and take a break. TJ, frustrated, just yells “I’m gay!” His teammates are taken aback, but none seem outwardly opposed. “um...okay?” TJ sits down and drinks water. He says “I’m sorry. I just had to get that out there...for um...Cyrus.” it finally clicks for the team. They’re supportive bc they love Cyrus.

Bex asks Bowie how long he’s been thinking about more kids. Bowie admits that it just kind of came up - that someone in his yoga club was pregnant and his mind started wandering. He says that obviously he wouldn’t force it on Bex, just that he didn’t want to rule it out now either. He reminds her that he didn’t get to raise Andi and is disappointed he missed so many moments. Bex says he didn’t have to remind her and says she will always regret that she kept it a secret from him - but that she isn’t sure about another kid. Financially and emotionally. Bowie says he understands.

Episode Nine.

The mid-year project for SAVA is coming up. Andi is stressed as heck - she can’t think of what she wants to say to the world. She doubts she was ever an artist to begin with. It’s 3am and she finds herself texting Cyrus because she knows he’s always up. Cyrus says that she’s feeling impostor syndrome - but that she earned her place in SAVA, fair and square, and it was obviously because her application or some force in the universe. She says that sometimes she wishes she wasn’t in SAVA and that she went to Grant with the rest. Cyrus says that he misses her but knows in his heart that Andi belongs in SAVA. He updates her on him and TJ and how TJ doesn’t want to come out and he feels like TJ is embarrassed of him and who they are. Andi comforts Cyrus and reminds him how long it took him to tell her he liked Jonah and that they’re just in different parts of the journey. Andi gets an idea for her art project.

Buffy & Marty go on a date. He decides to take her to The Brazilian Day festival in town to teach her more about his culture. Buffy loves learning more about him, including that he can speak some Portuguese and that he can dance really well.

TJ asks Cyrus on a date. Cyrus hesitates. TJ smiles and says it can be a real date and that they can hold hands in public and post pictures on Instagram. Cyrus asks if he came out and TJ nods, before grinning and hugging him.

Bex hints to Cece that Bowie is thinking about another child. Cece tells her how much she’s grown as an adult and as a mother and that Cece is confident that Bex can make a choice. Bex has baby on the brain and is constantly focused on pregnancy - which all comes to head when she does a maternity shoot for her photography. She feels mixed feelings and talks to one of her friends to try to sort out her feelings.

Episode Ten. FINALE.

Andi’s project about change & growing up doesn’t go over well because she rushed it at 3am. This is the first time she’s failed a project and she’s devastated. Cyrus tries to cheer her up with The Spoon and a sleepover with a lot of ice cream.

Marty invites Buffy to his father’s wedding. It goes over well & they slow dance together for the first time. 

Bex tells Bowie that she’s not against having another child, she was just scared. Bowie admits that he’s scared too...maybe they can face the fear together?

Jonah decides to join the music club, as well as participate in the high school “coffee houses” where students showcase their musical talents. He feels like he’s acclimating better.

Why do you think Andi Mack dropped so many plots it set up?

2a is where pretty much all of those dropped plots are set up and likely most of them were potential set up for a different version of S3 than we actually saw. The biggest dropped plots/set up that went nowhere I noticed on my 2a rewatch are in order below:

1) Gabriel set up in 2x03 as Bex’s toxic ex and the reason she thinks she can never get married then never mentioned again

It’s very likely that the re-shoots for A Good Hair Day (which was originally 2x04 in production order) were caused by a Gabriel related plot being cut. We know an actor was cast as his agency put out an instagram post about his casting and a later Disney quiz featured a photo of Gabriel which matched that of the actor they cast to play him. So this one is not the writers fault as for some reason Disney let them write and film whatever was going on with Gabriel in 2x04 and then decided that it had to be cut entirely. 

2) Cyrus saying in 2x03 that he one day would have to come out to all 4 of his parents as well as clear set up for Cyrus to kiss a boy after his 2nd kiss with Iris left him feeling like things wouldn’t get better

There’s no way to spin Cyrus straight up saying he would have to one day talk to all four of his parents about his sexuality; that’s Terri planning on doing it later on and never being able to follow up on it. Same with the clear set up for Cyrus to kiss a boy and have it feel right, Terri just didn’t know the limits she’d face with Cyrus’ story line at this point and it shows in the writing. 2x03 is only the 15th ep of the series and there were still 42 more to go and the show could have done so much more with Cyrus’ story line if Disney had only allowed them.

I don’t think Disney would have said no to Cyrus coming out to his parents in S3 but with there being no more than 2 coming outs allowed per season and with endgame Tyrus only approved with the writing of the series finale having Cyrus come out to his parents in 3x11 means you end the series with Jonah never knowing and if Tyrus never gets approved then you end with Cyrus single and only out to 2 of his 3 best friends which is a sad, pathetic ending. 

It’s no coincidence that 2x03 is TJ’s first appearance, he obviously would have been the guy Cyrus kissed but Terri probably envisioned him playing a big role in Cyrus coming out to his parents. Not only as someone who understands what Cyrus is going through but it was probably Cyrus dating TJ that was going to spur Cyrus to come out to his parents at some Jewish holiday or event as Cyrus didn’t want to hide his identity and his boyfriend around his parents any longer. I’m sure it would have been a wonderful ep.  Of course, that would have been dependent on Disney actually allowing canon Tyrus and whatever Terri’s original plan was I’m sure it didn’t involve waiting until the series finale to get permission for Cyrus and TJ to quietly get together. 

3) 2x07 had the second group date that went badly after the S1 Jamber/Ciris group date, this time for Jandi and Muffy. There never was a 3rd times the charm group date

Cyrus was out of the dating game so that leaves Jonah, Andi, and Buffy as characters available for this 3rd group date but Marty’s departure and the show later going with single Andi and Jonah endgame didn’t leave much room for another double date. We had a carnival and a virtual reality arcade and I can’t help but wonder what the 3rd group date may have been.

4) Celia says she’s selling the house in 2x04 because she doesn’t need that big space then puts her house sale plan on hold in 2x08 and that’s the last we hear of it

I had forgotten just how brief this plot was when I did my re-watch. I really don’t know what the plan was because Lauren Tom was on a four season contract just like the other mains and there was no way the show could have afforded to lose the Mack house set. And the series finale is dependent on Cece not selling the house for at least a few years otherwise Andi Studio is a bust. It’s pretty bizarre, I can only guess that maybe it was potential set up in case they suddenly got cancelled  later in S2 and they could bring it back up and end with the cast saying goodbye to the Mack house. 

5) Cyrus’ film career/Cyrus’ fortune starts in 2x07 but Cyrus never does anything film related after 2x11 and the texts after 2x13 spelled out that Cyrus would drop out of an Ivy league university like the fortune teller predicted because he’d go into film but nothing comes of it until a brief mention in the flash forward sequence of the series finale

It’s not a shocker that Cyrus has a disproportionate number of dropped plot lines but this one is all on the writers. They also dropped his love of reptiles and dinosaurs after him and Iris broke up. Giving Cyrus any kind of hobby or activity like Andi had her art and Jonah his ultimate and Buffy her track and basketball would have alleviated a lot of the complaints with how Cyrus was handled as a main character and would have made his story line feel much more balanced and developed. It’s not like Cyrus putting on a play or joining some junior paleontology club would have had to touch on his sexuality in any way and they could easily have kept TJ out of the eps focusing on Cyrus’ hobby if that would have been an issue. Also we know that Buffy’s basketball flash forward was only written during the 3c re-shoots as that’s when the casting call was put out for adult basketball players which means that Cyrus’ movie flash forward was a literal last minute tacked on thing.

6) Jonah shows up at Andi’s door at the end of 2x13 and seems like he wants to tell her about the panic attack but then asks her to be his official girlfriend, Jonah never tells Andi on the show 

This is another one that’s all on the writers. Andi is the main character of the show and her and Jonah are in every single ep, it’s not like Disney would have said no to Jonah having a solo scene with Andi to tell her about his panic attacks. I’m not counting the texts because most of the audience doesn’t have access to them and they’re no replacement for Andi finding out in person. It’s stunning that they had TJ of all people be told about the panic attacks yet it wasn’t important enough for Andi to know. It’s wild that Bowie, Cyrus, Buffy, Norman Goodman, and TJ all know but Andi doesn’t (and Jonah’s parents never get told either). Jonah’s ultimate and outdated slang get dropped in S3 but I think that’s more a reflection of the writers feeling embarrassed that what they though would be a quirky hobby and way of speaking became a running joke among the audience. 

I suspect that Andi didn’t find out in large part because they were dead set on single Andi and Jonah endgame and deliberately kept Andi and Jonah apart for most of the season. Most of their solo scenes involved Andi counselling Jonah about whatever failing relationship he was in at that time and perhaps they thought Jonah telling Andi about his panic attacks would have been too emotionally intimate of a scene and since it would have brought them closer together it might have gotten the audience hoping that they’d get back together. And the show may have wanted to avoid having to show Jonah on Andi’s doorstep in 2x13 on the previously on as that would remind the audience of Jandi. 2b spends a lot of time pretty much fixing the issues Jandi had and leaves them in a good place and then S3 just throws that all out so it wouldn’t shock me if Terri didn’t decide on single Jandi endgame until after S2 was over and was writing 2x13 with the expectation that Jandi would be together in S3. Regardless it was a big failing on the writers part as was much of Jonah’s story line in S3

I JUST WATCHED THE FINALE AND OH MY GOSH MY HEAD IS SPINNING I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS

I’ll give you my quick thoughts and then jump into Muffy because you already KNOW I am saving a whole section for them

Celia’s growth was amazing. I love that she went from being strict to being so carefree and trusting of Bex

Bex in that wedding dress 👏🏻 Bowie in that Tux 👌🏻 like they didn’t have to do that but they did 😭

The slow dance was SO CUTE OMG

I loved that all of them sang lady Gaga- the song was perfect for them but sad Garren wasn’t on stage with Sofia

However, they showed the ships singing together and whenever they showed Buffy they showed Marty so I was like 😩😭👏🏻 ya know

TJ playing the piano was all I could have asked for

I LOVED the scene when Cyrus and Buffy talked about “relationship woes” like wow. 😭😍 that hurt because the parrallels were so blatantly obvious but Terri made sure to take EQUAL time to explain their woes with each character.

Also WTF KIRA STOP TOUCHING TJ AND PUTTING YOUR ARM ON HIM. This has been my PSA

I LOVED watching TJ just RIP into Kira. Boi 👏🏻 told 👏🏻 her 👏🏻 off. He literally called her out for bullying and asked her to stop (likkkeeee not only was it great bc he was protective boyfriend mode™️ but because he showed growth. He defended Cyrus for something he used to do). It was great and a no Kira redemption was the best way they could have done that and it was was beautiful. 💯

I loved that Jandi scene! I have said I am actually ok with Jandi, but they needed more maturity. Andi needed to find herself and Jonah needed to be ready for a relationship. In time and when Andi can handle conflict, I think they would make a good pairing. But WITH TIME, like they said. Until then, Jonah has the cute bracelet. I think that was such a valuable lesson for kids to not rush something, just because you like someone. Make sure you are actually ready because crushes aren’t all just about endgames (which will sound hypocritical considering what I write next lol) but that they are a LOT of work and you have to have your head on correct to make sure you can handle it. Just *chef’s kiss*

I know Muffy was around this time (sorry my thoughts are so scattered- I am writing this post watching it so not everything is in a congruent timeline) but I am going to come back to them like I said earlier. They have a special reserved™️ section in this post 😍👏🏻

I laughed so hard at TJ’s name but gave all my uwu’s I had left post Muffy (which weren’t many but I reserved some for Tyrus) to that cute little line from Cyrus about how he liked his name 😭

I thought the scene was handled well considering their limits and tried to keep my expectations low, but TBH I was pretty bummed they didn’t actually say the words that they liked each other. I wish there was more dialogue than vague questions ya know? Oh well 🤷🏼‍♀️

I was also really REALLY hoping for some canon Muffy and Tyrus scenes at the party and kept checking the time stamp during the last scene hoping they would show SOMETHING but they didn’t say anything. Even just a quick “Hey I’m dating this person now and I love them all my uwu’s” would have been fine but it was like that was completely forgotten

However I’ve seen a few Tumblr posts about someone working on making fic text posts with the GHC talking about their canon ships so I’ll take what I can get :)

The Andi Shack and Andi getting into SAVA didn’t surprise me, but it was sweet

I really liked the whole side by side photo thing they did

What did surprise me was Jonah saying he loved Andi 😭 like that was such a sweet sentiment and I was just like, “Alexa play I Cried by Jonah Beck” you know?

Kinda also dissapointed we heard nothing more about Jonah’s panic attack’s, the hole in the wall, and possible Kippen Siblings

REALLY REALLY want an Andi Mack movie- they made a Lizzie McGuire one after only two seasons so they could with AM to address any plot holes (BUT IF THEY DO IT THEY BETTER HAVE CANON MUFFY AND TYRUS JOIN SO HELP ME BC MIRANDA WAS GONE IN TLMM AND I WAS READY TO SHOW HANDS)

Also other side note: I got kinda frustrated with all of the dancing/singing scenes. Like they were cute but also felt like a lot of wasted screen time (much like 3x19 or the Jonah/Cyrus camping scenes) when other plots could have been addressed

And no speaking lines for Amber? At all? Like...? Even with the Jonah stuff? Or redemption paralleling TJ. IDK seemed a lil wack to me

Muffy:

Again, Alexa play “I Cried” by Jonah Beck BECAUSE OH MY GOSH THEY WERE MY EVERYTHING

Surprisingly didn’t cry as much as 3x14 but I think that’s because I was shaking so bad (seriously I looked like I just went through a terrifying haunted house and stayed overnight in it, my hand trembling so much)

I rewatched the scenes WHICH ONLY MADE IT WORSE BECAUSE I CRIED MORE

I enjoyed writing my fics, but really really liked the way Terri handled this

I loved all of their scenes dancing together and it was funny because after Cyrus and Buffy talked, Buffy was like, “he doesn’t like me” but then Marty spent the ENTIRE night like RIGHT NEXT TO BUFFY. Not with the other girl. Literally physical space is not a real thing with them. Watch when they dance, or when they see CeCe in the Dino costume or any other time, Buffy and Marty are ONLY next to each other and Marty even moves closer to Buffy when they are all huddled around CeCe if you watch closely enough

I remember trying to look up Muffy fan videos after two episodes of them together because I already fell in love with them and there was one like barely edited thirty second video on YouTube. I tried to post something on here and like two people liked it. I LIKED THEM WHEN BASICALLY NO ONE ELSE DID AND SO I FEEL LIKE I AM ONE OF THE MOST DESERVING OF THIS SHIP BEING ENDGAME AND NO ONE CAN FIGHT ME ON THIS JUST LET ME LOVE THEM

Please Terri Minksy, I beg of you, if you don’t get a S4 make a movie but it is REQUIRED BY LAW that Muffy and Tyrus are in the ENTIRE movie- being canon and cute. They don’t even need angst but I still want scenes with them together just being in love.

I will be spending the entire next week in complete denial that this show is over, while rewatching this episode ten times and reading every Muffy fic I can find. Thanks for coming to my Tedx talk.

Today We Are |An Andi Mack Fic|

**So I was very inspired by Tumblr User @dumb-binch-juice that I decided to write fic of my own. I kind of borrowed some characters, but hey I just hope it’s good. This happens the December of the GHC’s Freshman Fall. Enjoy**

“So, I’m leaving RISD now. I’ll see you soon, Cyrus.”

“I’m still mad you’re spending New Year’s in L.A., Andi.”

“Well then, you’re gonna have to be mad at me in person in 6 minutes, 10 if I pick up Amber first. Are you sure you can keep it up for that long?”

“I hate how right you are,” Cyrus groaned into the phone as he slipped into his boots. The walk from RISD to Brown was super short, and while his suitcase was packed for winter break, he was still in house clothes. He ignored the buzzing of his phone while pulling on his winter boots, and worried if he was going to be too hot on the plane. He barely managed to squeeze into his coat and rush to the Mo-Champ desk before Andi and Amber arrived.

The ride to the airport was occupied mostly by Amber giving them a play by play of her Discrete Mathematics final, so Cyrus gave up even trying to understand what she was saying. Andi, likewise, spent the ride to the airport gazing wistfully through the glass. It had been a week since she’d submitted her final projects, and while she’d waited so that she could fly back with Cyrus and Amber, he knew she was probably already envisioning seeing everyone else back in Shadyside. Or maybe she was just falling asleep. Cyrus was pretty tired himself, after all he’d just crushed his Age of Revolutions final. He’d had the past six months to spend with Andi and Amber, so he might as well be rested when he saw everyone else...

When he got out of the cab, Cyrus was surprised to not find anyone waiting outside the house. Andi was dropping her stuff off with her grandmother, and wouldn’t be swinging by for another hour or so, since she had to explain her whole semester to Cece. Still, Cyrus had at least expected to see Buffy and TJ. A cold wind blew a flurry of snow off the ground as he walked to the door, opened it, and was immediately engulfed. Buffy picked him up in a bridal carry, swinging him around just to prove that she still could. Just when she set him down, he noticed something else.

“You straightened your hair again?”

Buffy shook her head, making her ponytail flip easily over her shoulder.

“Yeah, it was for exams. I didn’t want to look like a mess, but I also wasn’t going to manage it every morning. Plus, Atlanta has great salons. Some of the girls on the basketball team showed me a really great one that’s like 10 minutes from the dorm!”

Buffy continued expounding on her experiences as they moved to the basement. And as she spoke, Cyrus realized she didn’t just look different,she was different. Apparently, even Buffy had gotten a C on her first college exam. But the ease with which she talked about it was uncanny.  She was more honest about how her life had been, and way more humble. It felt like a stranger had slipped in when Cyrus wasn’t looking, keeping just enough to be familiar but not enough to be the same. 

Finally they made it downstairs, where Jonah and Marty were already playing ping pong. As soon as he saw Cyrus, Jonah dropped his paddle and ran to give him a bro hug. Cyrus leaned into it. It was nice to know that Jonah’s eagerness hadn’t faded over the past months. 

“Cy-Guy, how’s it been? Your parents said you kicked ass before they left, but have you seriously already made Brown your bitch?”

Cyrus’ jaw dropped. “Jonah, you swear now?”

“You don’t?” Jonah nodded for a moment before adding, “That makes sense. You’ve always been very, well…” 

He mimed a square with his hands in quick, rigid motions before Marty cut in.

“I think the word he’s looking for is grounded. You basically self-actualized sophomore year of high school. The rest of us just needed to catch- ow!” he yelled,as Jonah elbowed him.

“I swear, he takes one course on basic Psych and he thinks he’s your fucking dad. It’s been insufferable. He keeps on telling me that my anxiety is caused by the deep seated trauma of my birth. AND he keeps implying that I wanna fuck my mom, even though he says Freud is stupid.”

“It’s not your fault that Judy’s dummy thick.” Marty supplied.

“Shut up!”

Buffy gave a solid laugh at that, and Cyrus was quick to follow. They let the joy of seeing each other again wash over them for just a moment, before Buffy spoke again.

“You guys are so STUPID. Speaking of,” she looked between Jonah and Marty, “has TJ texted you when he’s coming? He was supposed to be here thirty minutes ago.”

Cyrus froze, and he immediately reached for his phone. He had totally forgotten the text in the middle of studying for finals. How could he have been so insensitive? Cyrus hadn’t seen TJ since September. He should’ve at least done something before the flight. But, the message stared back at him. 

<Miss you. Good luck ♡. Received December 13>

Cyrus quickly typed a reply.

<Oh my G*d, super sorry. I’m already back in town! Sent December 20>

And followed it with another.

< Which means that you can see me at my house. Sent December 20>

And another.

<Now. But if you’re driving please don’t look at this. Also I missed you, too. Sent December 20>

He was working his way through a fourth, when he got a call from TJ. The phone was to his ear in a nanosecond.

“Okay, so just to be clear, I did get your text, and I’m so sorry for not responding, and I totally get if you’re mad at me but-”

“It’s whatever, Cyrus. I’m in your driveway now.” Cyrus crumpled at his tone. It was the classic TJ Glass Wall Voice. He was either going to have to wear TJ down enough to actually talk to him, or just hope the TJ would come around. It was time to face the music. He turned to Buffy and smiled, hoping it would cover at least some of his discomfort.

“Actually, he texted me. And just called. He’s outside. I’ll get the door. You guys stay here and catch up.”

Cyrus slipped from the basement, back upstairs and ran to the door. 

“Wow.”

Cyrus took a second to appreciate seeing TJ in the flesh. He’d let his hair grow even longer since his last Instapic post in November,and it now hung down to his shoulders. TJ had somehow managed to grow even taller, to the point where Cyrus now came up to his chin. He was also in shorts, and Cyrus couldn’t help but stare in a mix of confusion and amazement. 

“Wow yourself.”

TJ stepped inside and pulled Cyrus into a tight embrace, and Cyrus sighed. Even when he was upset, TJ was an excellent hugger. They stood there silently for what felt like hours or maybe just seconds, before Cyrus was able to pull away.

“Listen. I wanted to say that I’m sorry that I didn’t text back. I got caught up in all sorts of studying, and then Ameya, and Shreya, and Thomas, and I all made a no phone pact. And then when I finished my exams, I was super excited and also tired, and I should have called, but I didn’t. And I’m so sorry. You know I still love you, right?”

TJ just grinned, and Cyrus felt the tension leave his body. “I’m honestly not mad at you, babe. I was just super frustrated with your stupid long driveway, plus I hate driving in the snow. And Buffy and Jonah have been blowing up my phone asking if I died, but I didn’t want to get another ticket if I responded. And, yes, I love you too.” 

TJ pressed a gentle kiss on Cyrus’ forehead.

“Well, if you wanted to yell at Buffy, she’s downstairs with Jonah and Marty. Plus, Andi’s coming over in a bit. I was thinking we could put on cheesy Hallmark movies, and say that every guy character is Jonah.”

“But, who’s the high strung businesswoman who leaves her successful New York career for Jonah Beck?”

“Is Lenni still around, you know she’s always welcome. And I’m pretty sure she the perfect casting.”

“Yeah. I’ll shoot her a text.”

They moved to the basement, ready for the next two weeks back in Shadyside. Popcorn was made and thrown, Jonah and Buffy dared each other to chug eggnog, and Andi showed up with cake. There was a lot of catching up to do, and even though everyone had changed, Cyrus figured that he might just be okay. He was going to make the most of the two weeks he had with the people he loved the most.

Ship: TJ x Cyrus aka Tyrus

Setting: Shadyside at Cece’s house. Takes place at Andi’s party in the finale

Word Count: 2802 (wowwww this was long winded whoops)

Warnings: sexual tension (p sure that’s obvious tho...), a couple of “bad” words but they’re mild

Rating: eh maybe like K? There’s not a lot that’s worth worrying about lol

Background: well I was a bit disappointed in how the tyrus scene kinda just... ended? and then wasn’t brought up again after the party ended and just the ghc and andi’s fam were outside?? So I thought I would put my take on it out there for y’all. The part immediately after the canon confession is what I initially imagined happening and what I wrote this fic for lolol.

Cyrus was tired of worrying so much about TJ and Kira.

And he was tried of dancing. 

His time singing on stage had been fun, but his friends had somehow scattered in the time it took him to go to the bathroom and back.

Buffy had disappeared out the front door, though Cyrus noticed Marty not far behind. Meanwhile Andi was also nowhere to be seen, and suspiciously Jonah couldn’t be found either. 

Cyrus didn’t feel like searching around for Amber, and instead went to grab a little snack and maybe sit down. Then he turned his head to the back yard, where TJ was leaned against a bench talking to a couple of his old friends.

There’s no better time then the present, I guess he thought, finishing the pizza rolls he had grabbed and heading towards the door.

TJ was tired of Kira’s tricks.

She had spent way too long manipulating and hitting on him, and he wondered why he’d let it go on for so long. 

I never would’ve let someone walk all over me before, but that Underdog makes me do some stupid things for him.

After sending Kira away (hopefully once and for all), he stormed away to grab a cup of punch to cool off, wishing someone had been brave enough to spike it so he could loosen up.

It wasn’t too long ago that he would have been the one to do it, or at least been with the people that would bring the booze.

Of course Cyrus changed that for him too, but it was definitely for the better.

After a while, he had been roped into showing off his piano playing skills, something no person at the party but his sister would have known about if it weren’t for the strong urge to show off for Cyrus.

Born this way hadn’t been his initial choice, but Amber told everyone that he knew how to play it from memory and so they begged him to do it.

Sure it was a good time, but after Cyrus ran off saying he’d be right back, TJ panicked and went to talk to a couple of people he knew that were getting ready to head out. 

They went into the back yard to get away from the loud music and after a nice conversation, his friends decided to leave.

With that, TJ was alone again, so he thought the bench he’d been sitting on the arm of would provide him a place to catch his breath. 

And then Cyrus showed up as soon as his butt hit the wooden planks and his heart rate spiked the way it always did when his crush walked up.

Cyrus was also freaking out a little too, but if someone was comparing the pair, it was nothing like TJ. Cyrus was more or less just mildly nervous, knowing anything said tonight could change everything.

So he started with something easy:

“Can I sit?”

They both looked at the empty spot, then at each other.

“Sure,” TJ gestured loosely with his hand as he tried to distract from his heart pounding so hard it almost matched the bass line of the music inside. 

With no hesitation, Cyrus slid into the spot, then asked a question he didn’t expect to fly out of his mouth so candidly.

“What happened to Kira?”

“I poured water on her and she melted,” he quipped back, cracking his “sarcasm smile” before looking away. Cyrus found it endearing and played along.

“I actually buy that,” he nodded. 

A lot of people liked to call her the worse version of witch, but really Cyrus saw her as both and wouldn’t be too surprised if she ended up putting a curse on him one day. 

TJ was still anxious but glad Cyrus was asking about the bitchy manipulator so he could set the record straight. 

He had even made sure to watch his language just for Cyrus, but if someone had asked Cy, he would’ve said he found it cute when TJ swore.

“She isn’t a nice person,” TJ shook his head, looking back at Cyrus once again.

Cyrus furrowed his brows before responding.

“You know people used to say that about you?” 

He grinned sincerely at TJ, who seemed to be in serous thought.

“Well, sometimes there’s a nice person on the inside trying to get out,” he confessed. 

TJ’s heart was still racing but he was never afraid to be real with Cy, except for the one thing he still feared confessing.

“I know that now,” they locked eyes and smiled, “but there’s still a lot of things I don’t know.”

Cyrus was really getting risky now, and he could feel it in how his pulse picked up.

“Like what?” TJ asked as he turned his shoulders to Cyrus, sliding his right leg a bit closer to Cyrus. He was hyper aware that their hands rested only inches apart on the seat.

“Like that you play piano.”

“My mom’s a piano teacher,” TJ mentioned slyly, like it was nothing, breath caught up in his throat a little.

“Didn’t know that either.” 

TJ decided to get bold too.

“I’m not mysterious, ask me anything,” he said, breathing out a light laugh.

“Okay!” Cyrus said, features brightening up as he angled more to TJ. “What does TJ stand for?”

Oh God, oh no, TJ thought, He did not just ask that. Now I’m gonna have to answer because it’s my muffin that’s asking.

“Except that!”

“You won’t tell me your name?” Cyrus grinned, truly wondering what the problem was ad TJ rolled his eyes. “And you think that’s not mysterious?”

“Okay there’s like... five people in the world who know it, and they’re all named Kippen.”

It’s a good thing Amber wasn’t there to hear their conversation. TJ knew he could trust her, but he also knew his sister well enough to know that she would’ve dropped hints left and right until Cy figured it out or TJ just said it.

“You should know that if you don’t tell me,” Cyrus started seriously, making TJ extra nervous again, “I will be the first person to ever literally die of curiosity!”

TJ held back a snort and instead let out a sigh.

“I don’t know, I... alright,” he turned even more towards Cyrus, his body almost facing the Jewish boy completely now, “if I tell you, you can never use it.”

“I won’t.”

“Or tell anyone else-”

“I promise!”

“Like, Cyrus, you gotta swear-”

“I do! I do! I swear!” Cyrus paused before lowering his voice slightly, “I swear.”

TJ studied Cyrus’s face for a moment before rolling his eyes again and continuing. 

“Alright. My parents are way into music, and they named me for their favorite artists,”

“That’s not so strange,” Cyrus added, unsure of why he was so worried about a measly name.

TJ hesitated again, heart pounding and stomach fluttering.

“TJ stands for...” 

There was a long pause this time.

“... Thelonious. Jagger.”

Cyrus furrowed his brows. He was shocked, blown away, and a little impressed that TJ actually told him. 

“Thelonious Jagger?!” he repeated, uncertain of how to react. “Are you kidding?!”

TJ was panicking inside. He shouldn’t have said anything. At this point he was ready to get up and leave when Cyrus kept talking. 

“That is a great name!” he exclaimed. “I love that name,” he finished sincerely, the widest smile on his face.

TJ was the one to be shocked now. He had never really heard “love” paired with his name, and never expected Cyrus to be the first to say it. He lightly snorted.

“You do?” he asked incredulously, mimicking his crush’s grin. 

“Yes!”

“Well my grandparents didn’t, they were like ‘that’s a ridiculous name, we’re calling him TJ!’“ he joked in a raspy voice, chuckled, then continued as normal. “So I’ve been TJ since I was three days old.”

There was another moment of silence, and suddenly both boys took on serious demeanors again. 

“Is there anything else you wanna know?” TJ questioned. His hand started to slide off his knee and towards Cyrus’s.

This is it, teej. It’s now or never.

Cyrus couldn’t help but look down and saw his crush’s hand had moved closer.

Omg. Stay calm Cyrus, this is it. It’s happening.

He looked back into TJ’s eyes, his butterflies erupted into his stomach.

“Is there anything else you wanna tell me?” he countered with a grin. 

TJ knew could feel his palms sweating, even though it was probably about 45 degrees outside and he could see his own breath in the night air. He answered truthfully, letting out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.

“Yeah,” his fingers slid closer again, the tips now lightly brushing the back of Cyrus’s hand and knuckles, “Is there anything you wanna tell me?”

“Yes,” Cyrus whispered, not wanting anyone to hear but TJ.

A weight had been lifted off of their shoulders, and TJ felt more free than ever before. He decided to seal the deal.

He grabbed Cyrus’s hand, not just cupping it, but fully interlacing their fingers.

TJ let loose a sigh he had been holding in since the moment he realized that Cyrus was more than just chocolate chocolate chip muffin guy. Cy followed suit.

They beamed at each other, soaking in the fact that their hands fit perfectly together. 

Cyrus took the opportunity to get clarity, even though words obviously weren’t necessary.

“You wanna tell each other at the same time?” 

His voice was still quiet even though they were completely alone in the yard. 

All TJ could do was nod in response. 

“Okay,” Cyrus said, squeezing TJ’s hand, “One, two, three...”

“I like you,” the both confessed in sync, lighting up upon realizing they had both said the same thing. They couldn’t help but chuckle at their confessions.

Cyrus wanted to cry. This was the happiest day of his life. 

TJ didn’t necessarily feel like he would cry, but another weight had definitely been lifted off of him. 

Before tears could well up, Cyrus leaned forward, letting go of TJ’s hand to wrap it around his back in a hug, the blonde boy following suit. 

The embraced for a few seconds, each of their eyes closed in excitement as they buried their chins in each other’s shoulders. 

Upon pulling away, TJ decided to take their friendship a step further once and for all.

“Cyrus, would you maybe wanna go out with me?” 

“Are you kidding? Absolutely!”

They sat there for the next hour, planning an official date and talking about anything and everything.

The party had died down quite a bit, and the newly minted couple had scooted closer over time, eventually Cyrus leaning into his boyfriend (man was that hard for him to believe) and TJ wrapping an arm around his shoulders.

They were content in their positions when something caused the bench to vibrate.

TJ rolled his eyes knowing it was his phone, thinking it must be Kira being annoying again. He was going to leave it until it buzzed a few more times.

Cyrus looked up at him and told him to just check, removing himself from TJ’s warm side so he could reach the device.

“Ugh, it’s Amber. I guess mom’s on her ass about us not being home yet.”

TJ slapped a hand over his mouth.

“Sorry, Cy. I know you hate swearing,” he apologized.

“I was afraid to tell you before, but I actually think it’s kinda cute when you do it. Just maybe keep the language to a minimum when we’re around other people.”

They both had lovestruck looks at when they were interrupted by another buzz.

“Geez she’s persistent. She wants me to meet her out front.”

“I’ll walk you out,” Cyrus offered.

“I wouldn’t want anyone else to.”

They stood up and TJ instinctively reached for Cyrus‘s hand. After months of resisting it, he was glad to finally be about to do even this small act without worrying what the other might think.

Cyrus’s heart was bursting at the seams, and his smile was unmatched. He looked up at the other boy with that lovey grin as they started walking inside.

In the living room, only a few people outside of their friend group were still there, most of them putting on coats or talking on the phone with parents. 

TJ’s heart suddenly began racing and cheeks heated up when a few people noticed the boys holding hands, even though most of them had knowing smiles. 

He wasn’t sure how ready he was to out himself to the rest of the world after playing straight man for so long.

He felt a reassuring squeeze from Cyrus and relaxed a bit.

It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks except for me and Cy. No one can come between us again.

TJ gave a a quick wave to Andi, Buffy, Jonah, and Marty, who were all gathered by the stairs talking. They all waved back and grinned, whispering to each other and pointing out the couple’s hands.

He thought back to a conversation they’d had earlier about when they’d be willing to tell more people. It was a given for them to share the news with what Cyrus dubbed the “good hair crew” and Amber, but everyone else was a mystery.

They’d have to talk about it later, because Amber was just in sight on the front lawn, texting. She looked flustered when she caught sight of the boys.

“There you are TJ! Finally! Mom wants us home asap,” she immediately began, not registering how close the boys were or that they were touching.

“Okay okay! Let me just say goodbye to Cyrus real quick.”

Amber perked up, then glanced at their hands. Realization hit her face and she opened her mouth to say something before closing it again, nodding, and turning to the sidewalk. 

The couple unlaced their fingers and turned to each other.

“So I’ll see you Sunday at the swings?” TJ asked, shifting weight between his feet.

“Of course. I’m sure everyone is gonna want to hang out at the spoon tomorrow too so I’ll let you know all the deets,” Cyrus replied with his usual chipper tone.

Both boys chuckled, and then TJ held his arms open awkwardly. Cyrus did the same and they embraced once again, squeezing each other firmly for much longer that normal.

After an acceptable amount of time, they separated.

“Well, goodnight,” TJ began.

“Goodnight.” Cyrus replied, wringing his fingers. TJ started heading to his impatient sister when confidence bubbled out of him.

“Wait!”

TJ stopped and Cyrus ran in front of him.

“You forgot something.”

“What are you talki-” 

TJ stopped abruptly when he felt Cyrus’s lips on his cheek, which suddenly heated up with the gesture.

“I know that was really cheesy but I thought it was a good idea,” Cyrus babbled after pulling away. He went to continue when TJ stopped him by pressing a kiss to the slightly shorter boy’s forehead.

“Text me when you get home, okay?” TJ breathed. 

“Only if you text me first,” Cyrus winked.

Finally, the two separated for good that night, waving to each other as the Kippen siblings began walking.

Once out of sight, Amber smirked and nudged at her younger brother, trying to pry the story about the night out of him the whole walk home.

Meanwhile, Cyrus made his way back inside to join the people left, promising to his friends that he’d spill the details eventually.

Eventually the partygoers had made their own ways home and the good hair crew was sat at the fire pit with Bex and Bowie, Cyrus finally got his text from TJ and grinned like mad.

Someone make a joking reference to who he might me texting and one joke led to another that ended with them all laughing.

Once they calmed down, Andi pulled out a childhood photo and things got serious again.

“Great party.”

“Life-changing even.”

“I think I missed some stuff!?” 

Everyone had to laugh at Jonah’s oblivious nature as they all unwrapped themselves from the group hug. 

“Tomorrow? At the spoon?” Andi asked.

Everyone nodded and Cyrus stepped forward to say bye. 

“Later, tater.”

He went out the gate to the front yard, finally making his way home for the night. He shot TJ a quick text to let him know he was heading home and that they would be meeting at the spoon the next day. 

Upon finally arriving at this mom’s house, he flopped into bed, let TJ know he was safe, and fell asleep with a wide smile.

TJ instead was laying in his bed, replaying the night over and over. 

Sure he was losing sleep over that boy, but finally it was for good reason.

A/N: Wow I can’t believe this was my first Tyrus story! I’ve loved them for a long time and am so happy for Luke and Josh for portraying these boys the way that they have. They are so sweet and I am sad that we had to see it end, but glad it ended with them together. 

I also have an idea for a series called “The space between” that touches on times between tyrus moments from the beginning leading up to this. Like non canon moments from when Buffy first met TJ until this fic. Idk lol.

Tyrus x The Society

Okay second time is a charm! This is an AU where the Andi Mack characters are students from West Ham, Connecticut and they get caught up in the story of the Netflix original series, The Society. It helps to know the story of the show, but you dont have to in order to enjoy the fic.

Chapter One- What Happened? 

Cyrus' head felt extremely heavy. This play felt like it was going to last forever, like seriously forever. He managed to power through the first half but after intermission he suddenly felt much more exhausted. He was only there to support Amber, who had managed to get almost everyone they knew to come watch the show. She wasn't even in the play very much. The leads were Harry and Cassandra, known for being the schools biggest rivals. But nonetheless Cyrus and the rest of his friends were there to cheer Amber on, no matter how minimal her role. 

Finally the house lights came up. However, Cyrus only knew the house lights had come up because Andi forcefully hit him over the head with her program to wake him up. He shook himself back into reality and stood up to go see Amber. 

They walked backstage, past where Cassandra and her sister were talking, and past where the stage crew was already putting things away all the way back to the dressing rooms. On their way there they saw what seemed to be Harry and some girl doing. . . well unspeakable things, but decided it was best for everyone if they just ignored it. 

In the dressing room everyone exchanged hugs, and congratulations to Amber. Even Buffy, who had definitely gotten much warmer towards her these past few years. Everyone had really, especially Andi. She'd never admit it, but there was most certainly a crush forming, maybe even a mutual one. 

After a few minutes of talking Cyrus decided to head out. He was about ready to start sleeping standing up and wanted to get home safely without dozing off at the wheel. So he said his goodbyes and left the way he came. Harry was no longer with his girl, instead he was arguing with Cassandra. What's new. Apparently there was a party that Cassandra wasn't invited to. Cyrus wasn't either, but that didn't bother him in the slightest. 

He slid past the rivals quarrel and out the double doors into the lobby. When he exited the building he was hit with a wave of an unpleasant, yet familiar smell.

"Oh god!" He exclaimed.

"Yeah," Came a voice from someone outside the door, "The smell's back."

Cyrus turned to see a boy leaning against the wall, one whom he recognized as Tj Kippen.  Cyrus didn't hate Tj, but there wasn't enough interactions between the two for him to form a good opinion either. Tj had just always been the staple jock that everyone knew. Captain of the basketball team, class clown, incredibly handsome. The boy was one big American high school cliche. 

"When did it come back?" Cyrus questioned, covering the bottom half of his face with his shirt. 

"Intermission. That's when I came out here. There wasn't a smell at first but then all of a sudden, it was just back. Like someone dropped a massive stink bomb on all of West Ham."

"Oh," Cyrus paused for a minute, unsure of whether he wanted to continue this conversation, "Can I ask why you came out of a play at intermission but never went back?" 

"Look Cyrus, that is your name right? You seem really cool, but I've never really talked to you. So I'm going to continue sitting here mysteriously and you can just go home, you look tired. Have a great night though, and make sure to keep your windows sealed tight." He said the last sentence with a chuckle. 

Cyrus looked down at his feet, "Thanks, you have a good night too." 

He started back to his car. What a weird interaction, certainly not one he expected to have tonight.

Eight AM wasn't when Cyrus preferred to wake up on a Saturday, but today he found himself stumbling out of bed early in the morning. The Great Smoky Mountains field trip was today, and Cyrus was ecstatic to finally be going. His friends were already  spamming a group chat with excitement for the trip. 

Only upperclassmen are allowed on the trip so they've had two years to build up high expectations. Andi's had her bag packed for months. Cyrus on the other hand, packed his bag just last night. He gave it a once over, and once he made sure everything was there he headed out. His parents went with him to both say their goodbyes and so that his car wasn’t at the highschool for the entire duration of the trip.

Finally, after many hugs from all four parents, he was free to go meet his friends. Luckily they all got onto the same bus. But not as luckily, there were five of them and only two people could sit on a bench. A few days ago they figured out a fair way to see who’d sit alone, and Cyrus picked the short straw (literally, they drew straws). So he had to find his own seat while Andi, Buffy, Jonah, and Amber all sat together. 

After a few minutes of sitting alone, no one had tried to sit with him. He wasn’t sure whether to be relieved or offended. 

“Is this seat taken?” A familiar voice said, snapping Cyrus’ head towards the aisle. Tj was standing there, leaning on the seat in front of them. 

“Uh. . . no, it’s not. You can sit.” There was a moment of silence before Cyrus finally said something else, “Why did you want to sit with me? There’s tons of jocks in the back.”

“That’s the football team, I’m a basketball guy, we don’t really hang out. Plus, I’m honestly kind of scared of Clark. He seems really aggressive. What about you, you do any school activities.”  C

“Film Club,” Cyrus said, thinking that the topic of the conversation was being changed.

“Okay so if I asked you ‘Why don’t you go sit with the spanish club kids?’ You’d tell me no because you don’t know them. It’s the same for me, I don’t really know any of the football guys. Well except for Grizz, we have AP Literature together.”

“Wait, you take AP Lit?” From there the conversation flourished, there was never any awkward pauses or silences.

Cyrus was the first one to get drowsy, his answers to questions got slower and more nonsensical. Eventually the whole bus seemed to doze off, until the hissing of the bus doors opening woke them all up again. Cyrus’ head was leaning on Tj, but he quickly pulled away and hopen the other boy didn’t notice.

“Are we there?” Tj managed to say, while still waking up.

Cyrus looked out the window, and made out a figure that looked like his school, “I. . . I think we’re home.” He said, confused, and unsure of what was going on. 

“Change of plans, rock slide. The road was closed, you’re back home.” The bus driver said over the speaker. 

“Okay, well I’m gonna go back to my house. It was cool talking to you Cyrus.” Tj stood up from his seat and was the first one off. Cyrus found his friends, they were all pretty upset that the trip was canceled. They got off the bus and stood in the courtyard, where no one was waiting for them. 

“Maybe no one told our parents that we’d be back,” Amber suggested. That sounded rational, there was no reason for them to question it. 

So the group split up and all walked back to their own homes. West Ham was a safe New England town, there wasn’t a high crime rate that would’ve worried the kids.

Back at his own home, he entered the door and quickly noticed that there was no one awake. That was strange because with his dad and step mom, someone was always working late or watching TV until midnight. He went up to their room, but they were nowhere to be found. Before he could even begin to question what was happening, his phone started to go crazy. Messages were spamming in at a mile a minute. It seemed that every kid from the field trip had been put in a group chat, and everyone was talking at the same time. 

Harry: people are saying their families are gone, anyone else notice that?

That was the first message, and from there everyone went crazy. It seemed that the entire town was just gone. Save for those who were on the busses. The busses had also disappeared, along with their drivers. No one knew what was going on or what to think, and the chat wasn’t helping anything. 

Cassandra: This isn’t helping! Everyone come back to the courtyard and we can see what’s happening. 

Cyrus wasn’t sure what to think. He needed his friends to help get his mind cleared. So he texted their smaller group chat, which was much more calm.

Cyrus: Are your houses empty too? Andi: Yeah. Both mine and Cece’s house. What the hell is happening? Jonah: Maybe we should go to the courtyard. Thats where everyone else is going. Amber: Yeah. I’ll meet you guys there. 

He put his shoes back on and headed right back out of his door, down the way he walked home and towards the courtyard. When he got there Andi and Jonah had already made it, so he found them to try and get more information. Someone had brought some beer, and it was being passed around, but Cyrus refrained. 

In the middle of their conversation, a loud voice boomed, “The fucking church is open!” and everyone ran to get inside. They probably figured that a church would be an amazing place for a party. Which it kind of turned out to be. There were speakers, and places to sit, if it weren’t so sinful there’d be parties in the church all the time. More and more people showed up, and more and more people brought booze. Eventually everyone was trashed. 

The other four were off dancing and drinking, while Cyrus stayed by the wall, completely sober. One person should stay responsible, he thought. Then, drunkenly, Tj stumbled over towards him. 

“Hey! Little guy. What’s up, you don’t look like you’re having any fun,” He leaned against the wall next to Cyrus in order to keep himself up. 

“I’m having a great time, I love watching people, observing them.” 

“Well I like observing you.” Tj looked into Cyrus’ eyes and sat there for a moment. Then he leaned in quickly kissed the other boy. He leaned away and stared once again. 

“You can’t just do that,” Cyrus said under his breath.

“Yeah. Well I did. Okay little guy, see ya later.” He pushed himself away from the wall and staggered away. 

Cyrus felt like he’d had enough for one night, so he let his friends know he was leaving and went back to his house. It was strange that none of his family were home, but he managed to fall asleep okay.

Because he’d had to get up so early the day before Cyrus decided to sleep in today, and for a moment he’d forgotten that the people of his hometown had disappeared. The large group chat was spamming like crazy, so he checked to see what all the fuss was about. 

Campbell: Bad news, we’re fucked. The borders are nothing but woods, it’s like the real world completley fucking disapeared. 

Luke: We’re putting together a party to go out and see what’s beyond the borders lmk if you’re up for it

A few people had replied that they were interested, but Cyrus only took notice of one person. 

Tj: I’m in

He wasn’t sure why, but Tj going on the search party made him really nervous.

Cassandra had organized for a town meeting that night. She was worried that since there were no adults or rule makers, people would go crazy. And she was right, people were raiding the stores to steal all the food. Hell, someone already stole all the carrots.

All five kids had been at Cece’s house all day, just talking and trying to wrap their heads around what was going on. Jonah was stuck on theories of what was happening. His favorite was that aliens took their town to a dense forest but left all the people in Connecticut. Cyrus could tell that the constant speculation was really just a coping mechanism because he was scared of what really could’ve happened. 

At 7 o’clock sharp everyone was gathered in the church for the meeting. Everyone was arguing, mostly Cassandra and Harry. The group agreed mostly with Cassandra, that they should share their belongings in order to preserve resources.

“Me and Cyrus have two houses each, there’s no reason we should just keep them to ourselves.” Andi made a good point to the rest of the kids. Although, it only stirred up more controversy. Soon there was nothing but constant noise, no one could discern what anyone else was saying. Until. . .

BANG 

A gun fired. People turned to see Campbell, known for being quite unstable, holding the gun. He argued some more, and more. Really no different from before, but now everyone was aware he had a gun. The fighting didn’t stop again until the church doors swung open. The search party had returned, and they were carrying a body. 

They cleared off the beer cans and red solo cups off of a table and set her down. 

“She died from a snake bite,” Luke said, through tears, “We did everything we could but we couldn’t save her.” 

A murmur spread throughout the crowd. Everyone was mortified. 

“Do you guys all want to stay at Cece’s house tonight? I feel like we shouldn’t be alone.” Andi offered. The rest of them replied through silent nods. Amber leaned her head on Andi’s shoulder with glossy eyes, and then they all filed out of the church. Outside, Cyrus saw an unpleasant sight. Tj was sitting on the ground with his head in his hands. 

“Hey,” he tapped Andi on the shoulder, “I’ll meet up with you in a bit I’m just gonna go grab some stuff from my house.” He walked over and slid down next to Tj. “are you okay.” No response. “That was probably pretty hard for you, I’m really sorry you had to see that.”

“Thanks I guess. I still don’t really think I’ve processed what happened. I kinda don’t wanna talk about it.” When he pulled his head from his hands Cyrus could see tear streaks and puffy eyes. 

“Okay, sorry I bothered you,” Cyrus said, then stood up to leave. 

“No wait!” Tj grabbed his arm. “I don’t want to talk about it, but I still want to talk to you. You’re the only person I want to talk to, actually,” Cyrus’ face softened into a smile and he sat back down. He put his head on Tj’s shoulder and let the conversation flow.

Thoughts On “A Moving Day”

So, I’ve decided that this will be my last liveblogging for “Andi Mack”. I really would like to focus all my attention and emotions on the finale and write my thoughts after it. So, with that said, I just want to say thank you to everyone who liked and reblogged some of my live blogging posts. I hope they brought you joy and some laughter!

With no further ado, on to the episode!

TOAST.

WE STARTED THE EPISODE WITH TOAST

Thank You Andi Mack

So that this doesn’t get lost in the endless sea tomorrow, I thought I’d make a little thank you post for some of the people who made this series so wonderful.

Oh, and @joshua-rush, if you’re reading this, feel free to send this to the others.

Peyton Elizabeth Lee, thank you for playing Andi Mack. Our titular Asian-American protagonist who has a heart as big as her creativity. A character with one of the craziest, yet lovable family trees imaginable.

Some great plot lines she has starred in include, of course, her messed up family tree. It’s come a long way from Season 1, where we get to see her family come together, fall apart, but come back together in the end. A couple of episodes centered around her Chinese heritage, providing us with an idea of tradition and culture for Chinese people. Her relationships have unfortunately gotten the short end of the stick, but it compensates for her many creative and rebellious acts. To name a few, she was the one who started the dress code protest, as well as the Mint Chip clothing store garage sale. She also broke the huge Asian stereotype with her arts and crafts mural, which (hopefully) got her into SAVA.

Well-Known Ships: Jonah, Amber, Walker

Sofia Wylie, thank you for playing Buffy Driscoll. Headstrong, yet fierce, you’ve helped to show young women, especially women of color, across the world that they have more potential than they realize, and that the right motivation is all they need to be the best person they can.

Honorable plot lines include her moving story, which to be honest, had a bit of a lackluster ending. But it still gave younger kids a glimpse that not all people are lucky like that, so close connections may be lost when someone leaves. Of course, connecting to that is the military mother plot, where Buffy finally reunites with her mom, who had been deployed at sea. But in my opinion, her best plot line had to have been her entire sports career, and how she went from a bossy and competitive player to a supportive team captain.

Well-Known Ships: Marty, Walker

Joshua Rush, thank you for playing Cyrus Goodman. Jewish, gay, but most importantly, loyal best friend. You’ve inspired many LGBT kids to come out to their loved ones (myself, included), and taught them that they are no different to anyone else.

His plots were some of the most mature, but most important ones of all. To get the big one out of the way, there’s his gay storyline, where he comes out to his closest friends, and shows his true colors. Next up is the Jewish-centered episodes, giving us diversity in something that isn’t truly physical. We see him evolve during his bar-mitzvah, and during his grandma’s Shiva. Both times give us an accurate representation of Jewish beliefs, culture, and tradition. Of course, who could forget the gun plot, which gave kids a very important lesson on gun safety, and that it’s important to understand the dangers of unsafe handling. 

Well-Known Ships: TJ, Jonah, Iris (I had to mention her somewhere. She honestly deserved better)

Asher Angel, thank you for playing Jonah Beck. A bit oblivious, but still a great friend, an amazing musician, and our favorite Space Otter (aside from Gus).

The one that blew everyone away, not only because of it’s surprise reveal, but because of how it continued on for multiple episodes, was the panic attack plot. It gave kids with anxiety someone to relate to, and how even though it’s scary, there are ways that can help you overcome it. The bankrupt family one had a really long buildup (about ten episodes from 3x02), but they at least kind of brought it back with a few updates on the whole situation. As of right now, the Becks are in their own home, and hopefully, it stays that way. And finally, whilst not important, there were the many, many, MANY storylines revolving around Jonah’s (failed) dating life. Just look at the ship list for him!

Well-Known Ships: Andi, Cyrus, Amber, Libby (One ship is gay, two ships had good development, three ships were canon, all four ships start with J)

Lilan Bowden, thank you for playing Bex Mack. Two completely different sides. One is rebellious, while the other is loving. 

Honorable storylines included her family connections. We get to see her become more involved in Andi’s life, regrow her love with Bowie, and fix broken ties with Cece. She got to open up her own makeup store, she finally got over her ex, Gabriel. Now, after some hardships, she’s gotten married to our one and only Bowie. 

Well-Known Ships: Bowie, Miranda (Before Miranda became a snake)

Trent Garrett, thank you for playing Bowie Quinn, who is now Bowie Mack. Our rocking dad figure with a love for those closest to him. 

His story started when he came into Andi’s life and immediately tried becoming a better father figure towards her. He reconnected with Bex, and became a guitar teacher at the music store. There were a few episodes where he was with Miranda, but that ship has sunken, because Bex is his one true love.

Well-Known Ships: Bex, Miranda

Lauren Tom, thank you for playing Celia Mack. Our favorite non-grandma grandma, whose a little arrogant, but still a supportive family member of the Macks.

Her storylines are more of the supportive role, as one of her only main plot included the house selling one with Ham. However, she does play a larger role in the Chinese storylines, as she naturally has more knowledge of their traditions. Regardless, she has still evolved over the course of this series, and I’m glad she’s still here until the end.

Well-Known Ships: Ham (Yes, I mentioned him. The character was still good, even if the actor was not) 

Emily Skinner, thank you for playing Amber (last name unknown). Mean or nice, she has made her way into our hearts as one of our favorite characters.

Amber was always more of the jealous antagonist towards Andi. But as time went on, she became a better person and even one of Andi’s greatest allies. She also grew closer with Jonah, even after their breakup(s), because of their connection with families with money problems. She also grew closer with Cyrus and Buffy, though those two had less development with her. And because of her, I now know what a rage cage is.

Well-Known Ships: Jonah, Andi

Garren Lake, thank you for playing Marty from the Party. A recurring character at most, but everyone was glad to see you return in the final season.

Marty was always a support to Buffy, and he never really got much development with anyone else. There was that small moment where he dated Rachel. He’s a talented runner, and a good friend. I wish there was more to say about his character, but running and Muffy was kind of all he was known for.

Luke Mullen, thank you for playing TJ Kippen. Our sporty gay boy who has evolved from mean captain to soft buddy.

Even as a recurring character, TJ has been a great addition to the cast. His storyline of being gay hasn’t been mentioned yet, as of right now, but he’s earned quite the reputation of being the T in our Tyrus ship. But enough about that, he has great storylines with Buffy as well, growing close bonds with her as a friend, and with her helping him when he found out about his dyscalculia. 

Well-Known Ships: Cyrus, Buffy (that was more of an Instagram ship, though)

Raquel Justice, thank you for playing Kira. The character we all love to hate. It’s a shame you weren’t with us longer, but you’ve been amazing for the time being.

Kira’s plot were more Buffy and Cyrus based. She started off as kind of past Buffy in the present. Competitive and arrogant. Then she caught TJ and became a slight Cyrus rival. Good to mention that Amber, Andi’s rival, got redeemed. Buffy’s rival, TJ, also got redeemed. So here’s hoping that our Cyrus rival also gets a small redemption in the finale, even if it’s a minor one.

Well-Known Ships: N/A (Though Cyrus thought she was with TJ)

Anson Bagley, thank you for playing Gus. He’s always been someone we loved, even if he was only here for decades at a time. 

Gus was our favorite support character. He’s part of student court, he started a lunch riot when there were A and B groups,and he’s an honorary space otter. Not much else can be said, except that he’s quirky and awkward. For that, he’s one of our favorites.

Well-Known Ships: N/A (Unless you count the millions of crackships)

And finally, we have the best for last. Thank you Terri Minsky, for creating the show we all know and love. I never saw Lizzie McGuire as a kid, and now that I’m a teen, it’s nice to have an idea of what kind of show that was. You’ve broken so many stereotypes with your show, and I’m hoping you make something great for the next generation. 

I remember joining this after season 1 had ended, and I binged the entire season because it was just too good. Andi Mack is my favorite show, and I’m sad it’s now over, but regardless, it was the best thing I could ever watch. It seems like Disney is making a comeback with good shows (mainly cartoons), but I’m excited to see what they make next.

Jonah scanned his finger down the parchment in his hand for what felt like the thousandth time. He had barely slept the night prior, Jonah was much too excited to sleep. The brown-haired boy was seated on his bedroom floor near his window, impatiently waiting for the sun to appear in the horizon.

Jonah yawned and stretched out his legs in front of him. He glanced down at the green-spotted pajamas he was wearing, smiling silently to himself.

In just a few hours, he would be catching a ride on the Hogwarts Express. No matter how many times he repeated those exact words in his head, Jonah could still hardly believe it. Hopefully everything would go according to how he planned.

He was soon going to the school of his dreams, Jonah would finally find his place in the Wizarding World. Ever since he was a young boy, he had been counting the days up until he would enter the grounds of Hogwarts. And now, it was finally here.

The brown-haired boy hugged his sides in excitement and peered over at his sleek wand resting on his bed, remembering the embarrassing events that lead up to attaining it. Jonah blushed at the memory of the attractive dark-haired boy, Cyrus, and how he had utterly embarrassed himself right in front of him. Yet, even though things hadn’t been too smooth at first, he hoped he could see him again.

Before Jonah knew it, his thoughts were slowly slipping away into the depths of his mind, his head gradually propping up against the wall of his bedroom as he fell into a deep slumber.

A couple hours later when the sun was rising up in the sky, Jay, the human alarm clock, was hurrying from the bathroom to wake up his brother. He tore open the door and sped straight up to Jonah, shaking him from side to side. He was causing such a ruckus that their parents could hear from down the stairs.

“Get up sleepyhead! Wake up! Today’s the big day!” He proceeded to yell at Jonah, who had not stirred.

“You’re going to be late!”

With those last words, Jonah’s green eyes shot wide open, leaping to his feet while almost knocking his younger brother off the bed.

“Ack! Sorry Jay!” Jonah apologized repeatedly at his annoyed brother who now sat at the edge of his bed. “But I need to get ready.”

And with that, Jonah pushed his brother out of the room and locked the door, quickly turning his attention to the completed Hogwarts supply list sitting lopsided on the floor. He snatched it immediately, along with his wand, the textbooks he had bought for school, his suitcase, and his owl’s cage. Jonah heaved, his arms struggling to carry everything, and trudged to the door. Only then did he catch a look of himself in his mirror whilst exiting his room.

“Shit.” Jonah cursed under his breath. He looked himself over in the mirror.

Low and behold, he was still wearing his green-spotted pajamas. Jonah mentally slapped himself in the face as he cast aside all of his items back onto the ground.

Jonah raced to open his closet and grabbed the nearest outfit he could find, seeing as he was already off-schedule. He threw on some black robes with a white shirt underneath, along with a loosely fastened green tie around the collar.

The green-eyed boy scrambled back to his things and pulled the door shut. He hurried down the creaky stairs, his suitcase thumping loudly on the wood.

When he arrived at the bottom of the staircase, Jonah inhaled deeply, trying to calm his beating heart. He momentarily dropped his things onto the floor so he could properly greet his parents who were staring at him with raised eyebrows.

“Jonah, sweetie?” His mother asked, standing up from her chair. “I heard quite a bit of banging coming from your bedroom. Are you prepared to leave?” She gestured towards the door.

Jonah let out a small chuckle. “Yeah. I’m ready to go now.” He grinned happily.

Similar to the Beck family’s trip to Diagon Alley the day prior, they were again swarmed by other witches and wizards along with the addition of many muggles as well. In the midst of chaos, Jonah pushed his heavy cart of items through the herd of people while he gazed down at his train ticket, hardly able to keep his eyes off its golden writing. He searched the signs above for platforms nine and ten, knowing well that the portal to platform nine and three quarters was hidden in between them.

Walking closely behind Jonah was his proud parents and brother who were beyond excited (and nervous) for him to move on to the next milestone in his life. His mother and father held back happy tears as they walked alongside each other.

Unfortunately, during a few moments where Jonah had accidentally been keeping his eyes on his train ticket for longer than he should have, he bumped right into a stranger in front of him, sending a few of his textbooks flying out of his cart and crashing onto the ground.

Jonah jolted his head up immediately. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry!” He held his hands up apologetically. “I didn’t mean to-“ Jonah made eye contact with the stranger, and his good communication skills quickly vanished into thin air.

“Well, I didn’t expect to be seeing you again so soon Jonah,” remarked Cyrus, the attractive dark-haired boy from Ollivanders, with a big smile gleaming on his face.

Jonah’s mind eventually registered that the boy was speaking to him. He blinked away his initial shock and returned a grin. “What a weird coincidence,” Jonah replied softly as he reached down to pick up his textbooks off the ground.

“Is that your family over there?” Cyrus pointed to Jonah’s parents and brother who were standing a few feet back. They had been watching the two boys carefully, sharing knowing looks among the three of them. Cyrus waved at them kindly.

Jonah nodded hesitantly. “Sadly, yeah.” He let out a sigh. “Anyway, I was just heading over to the train platform before I crashed into you.”

Cyrus giggled at him. “Did you want to join me then?” He held out a hand to Jonah. “I know a shortcut. You don’t need to go the long way. I can navigate through the crowd pretty well.”

Jonah looked at Cyrus’ extended hand then back up to his face. Jonah could see a ray of sunshine shining brightly on Cyrus’ face, all of his features standing out more clearly. It seemed as if the wind was blowing through Cyrus’ thick strands of dark hair, making the whole experience feel like a dream. Every aspect of it seemed like the universe was telling him to say yes. Jonah beamed and willingly grasped his friend’s hand. Cyrus’ fingers laced around Jonah’s palm, the warm feeling bringing heat to his cheeks.

Jonah broke the silence. “You promise you won’t take me to the wrong platform? I don’t want to smash my head into a brick wall.” Jonah explained, sweat beads forming on his forehead.

“Of course I won’t. Why would I do that?” Cyrus laughed. “Wouldn’t want to hurt that pretty face of yours.” The dark-haired boy winked.

Jonah’s cheeks flushed darker. “Yeah uh,” Jonah gulped, brushing off Cyrus’ flirtatious comment. “I’m gonna go say goodbye to my parents, it’ll only take a sec.” He awkwardly removed his sweaty hand from Cyrus’ as he walked back to his family.

Jay raised an eyebrow mischievously. “Soo, was that the boy who called you cute yesterday?”

Jonah immediately shoved a hand over the young boy’s mouth. “Shush! Not so loud! He might hear you.” Jonah couldn’t bear to embarrass himself in front of Cyrus even more than he already had.

Jay grabbed his brothers wrist and pried Jonah’s hand off his mouth, ignoring his warnings. He opened his mouth to speak before being cut off by his father.

“Hush now, Jay.” The man smiled at his youngest son. “You don’t want to ruin Jonah’s chances of having a good time at Hogwarts, do you?” He glanced down at Jay who responded with rolling his eyes.

Jonah’s mother came forwards to wrap her arms around the green-eyed boy’s head tightly. “I’m so proud of you, sweetie,” she held him close. “Tell us everything when you come home for Christmas.” The woman ruffled her son’s light brown hair.

“Don’t worry, I will.” Jonah released himself from his mother, turning away from his family. “Bye, see you guys soon!” He bid them farewell before heading back to Cyrus not too far away. Jonah’s parents waved him their goodbyes, their figures becoming smaller and more unclear to Jonah as he walked away.

“Well they seemed friendly,” Cyrus remarked. “Shall we go?” He gracefully held out a hand for the other boy to take, grinning innocently.

Jonah rolled his eyes and played along. “We shall.” With his other free hand, he pushed his cart while Cyrus guided him around the mob.

After a few minutes of peaceful silence between the boys, they arrived at the spot. Standing before them in plain sight was the signs for platforms nine and ten, Jonah’s green eyes now glancing from the two pillars to Cyrus’ proud face.

“We got here so fast,” Jonah raised an eyebrow. “How did you-”

“I told you I knew a faster way,” Cyrus cut him off. “My dad used to have a job that required constant traveling, plus my friend’s parents literally work at Hogwarts.” The dark-haired boy shrugged.

Jonah blinked. “Wait- you know people who are professors at Hogwarts?” He couldn’t believe his ears.

Cyrus let out a giggle at the other boy’s shocked expression. “Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to introduce you to them. But I personally think their kids are better,” He continued. “They’re my best friends, and I think you’ll get along pretty well with him.”

Jonah understood. “Yeah, sure. But we should probably go through the portal before we miss the train.”

“Right,” Cyrus stepped aside, letting Jonah go through first. “After you.” He gestured to the brick wall in front of them.

Jonah tightened his grip the cart, gulping down his fear before running into the portal.

When he opened his eyes, he let out a sigh of relief. The train hadn’t arrived yet.

Jonah was soon joined by Cyrus, whose face brightened with excitement. He pointed to a clutter of people, grabbed Jonah’s arm, and dragged him over.

“Hey, what are you-” Jonah began, beyond confused why Cyrus had yanked him over to a jumble of people waiting by the ticket booth for the train to arrive.

“I’m introducing you to my friends!” Cyrus exclaimed with great delight, his reaction seeming like he had won an Oscar. He motioned his hand over to two people specifically from the crowd, who’s backs were facing them.

Cyrus called to get their attention. “Hey, guys! I’m back.” He cheerfully waved to his friends.

The two people slowly turned around.

“‘Bout freaking time-” One of them snickered.

“Wait-” the two girls were now facing Cyrus and Jonah, their mouths dropped open.

“Jonah?”
