My thoughts of the new Minecraft wolf variants!
With the recent announcement of the new wolf variants, I wanted to give my two bits about what real life animal each of the variants are based on! (I study animal ecology so I get excited when animals are depicted in anywhere)
The Pale Wolf, Black Wolf, Snowy Wolf, Ashen Wolf, and Woods Wolf
All of these wolf variants are based on the Grey Wolf (Canis lupus), whether it be the typical Plains Wolf (Canis lupus nubilus), or a different subspecies. The Grey Wolf is the most common wolf species found on the world, typically lives in packs of 4-9 members, and typically has 5 accepted subspecies in the science community - but in total has over 30 subspecies (determining subspecies can be tricky).
The Pale Wolf is specifically meant to represent a Plains Wolf, as this design has been representing the Grey Wolf in Minecraft for at least 12 years. The Taiga biome is one of the biomes where Grey Wolves can be found, making it a great place to find Pale Wolves in Minecraft.
The Black Wolf is not a subspecies, but rather a color variant of the Gray Wolf. The black coloring of their coats is not typically caused by melanism, but rather is a normal gene found in Grey Wolves. One of the causes of wolves having a black coat is due to the black gene being linked to higher immunity to canine distemper, meaning the black wolves that survive the virus are able to reproduce and pass on their black genes. Does this mean distemper exists in Minecraft? Probably not, but that's up to your interpretation.
The Snowy Wolf is based on the Arctic Wolf (Canis lupus arctos). Artic wolves' white coats help them blend into the snow to help them hunt prey, and to hide them from potential predators.
The Ashen Wolf is likely based on the Eurasian Wolf (Canis lupus lupus). The Eurasian wolf can have similar coloring to the plains wolf, but has also been found with greyer coloring along its back, tail, and upper legs and face, and with white on its cheeks, underbelly and lower legs.
I think that the Woods Wolf is based on the Tibetan/Himalayan Wolf (Canis lupus chanco). It was a challenge to find what subspecies the woods wolf was based on because most wolves don't have the deep brown-orange coloring seen on the woods wolf, but the Tibetan/Himalayan wolf can often be seen with these colorings in the wild.
The Rusty Wolf
The Rusty Wolf is based on the Dhole (Cuon alpinus), also known as the Asiatic Wild Dog. Dholes have a rich tawny coat with a rich chocolatey tail. Unlike another popular red canine (the dingo), Dholes live in tropic forests, rainforests, and other habitats, making it an appropriate fit to be the jungle dwelling rusty wolf.
The Spotted Wolf
The Spotted Wolf is based on the African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus), also known as the Painted Dog or the Cape Hunting Dog. This is variant is my favorite of the variants, and is one of my favorite canines of all time. African wild dogs live in savannah and grasslands biomes irl, and have beautiful coats ranging in different patterns of tawny, black, and white. I don't know if this is possible for Minecraft mechanics, but hopefully the spotted wolves will have different coat variants like their irl counterparts.
The Striped Wolf
The Striped Wolf is based on the Aardwolf (Proteles cristata), which is a species of hyena, making them felids instead of canids! (Yes, hyenas are more closely related to cats than dogs). Aardwolves can be found in semi-arid and open plains, making the badlands a good place to find them in-game. Fun fact! Aardwolves mainly eat termites/ants. Hopefully the striped wolf won't starve in a "bugless" game (rip fireflies).
The Chestnut Wolf
This one frustrates me. I couldn't find a canine or canine adjacent animal that had even a similar coat pattern. This is not a wolf. It is a dog. Probably a Norwegian Elkhound.

“y’can do it.” you rubbed soda’s back as he hyped himself up, jumping up and down to circulate his adrenaline even more.
“and next we..” you both heard the announcer say through the giant speakers, the muffled audio from inside the dressing room distorting his voice.
“alright, it’s time!” sodapop said, jogging out to the door. you were turning to grab your bag and exit to the crowd before you felt a hand grab your arm and lips crash against yours. before you could fight it, you opened your eyes to see your boyfriend, giving you one last kiss before he went out.
you tapped his cheek, signaling for him to get a move on. once he had pulled away, he looked you up and down with his sea blue eyes.
“you gonna be m’cheerleader out there?” he asks, tilting his head.
“you know it.”
he beamed at you before he heard one of the crew tell him to come out. he gave you a quick wave and jogged out the door again.
you walked out another exit, making your way into the sea of people who were already cheering once soda had come out, half because of the sport and the other half because of soda’s good looks.
you watched with a smile as he searched for you in the crowd, saddling up on the bull while his crew secured him and the flank on the animal.
his eyes met yours, quickly crinkling with his grin before he was given the okay and braced himself as the gates open. soda grabbed onto his hat as the bull bucked its hind legs vigorously.
you cheered and clapped intently as you counted the seconds for how long he was on, already nearing eight seconds.
the bull shook its head along with his body rapidly, horns pointing in every which direction trying to buck soda off.
you and everybody around you whooped and whistled as the time finally hit eight seconds, and right after, soda finally flew off. he broke his fall as he shifted into a roll and clambered away from the bull to avoid injury, his back and pants covered in the light brown dirt from the ground.
his head turned quickly in every direction, eyes scanning the audience for you, and when he laid eyes on you, you’d think he was seeing an angel.
he ran up to you as you leaned over the railing, you pulled him by the collar of his shirt and pressed a kiss to his pink lips, a little rough probably from licking and chewing on his lips out of anxiousness.
“c’mon, baby y’gotta get up.” you whispered to him, eyes landing on the bull who the staff was trying to contain but all soda could do was look at you and smile.
once you had snapped him out of it, he climbed over the white spherical railing and the tall pieces of wood painted with ornate murals and graffiti that separated the audience from the dirt.
all sodapop can do is laugh and rush over to you, arms coming around your waist as you wrap yours around his neck. his grip on you was tight, rocking you side to side subconsciously as you mumbled praises in his ear, him pressing kisses to your cheek.
“y’wanna get outta here? maybe go to the dingo or som’?” he asked, pulling away but keeping you at arms length so he could hold your shoulder and look you in your eyes, those eyes he adored so dearly and those eyes who had supported him from the day you had met him.
you saw how soda was practically vibrating in place with energy, you wondered how his cheeks didn’t hurt with all the smiling he did.
“or y’know, we could head home or get some tickets for—“ you cut his stammering off with a kiss, holding his face with your hand as the other one found his hand. you heard a multitude of whistles behind you in the crowd at your interaction with your boyfriend, but you didn’t care.
it felt like those scenes in the movies, where everything went dark and you and soda were the only two people in the world, the announcer’s voice being tuned out in the background with the rest of the crowd. you and him were the only people in the world right now, it felt.
and that was all that felt right.

Murder Drones Fanfic - Tessa's Tinkerer
Tessa sat at the bench in the garage, she was helping putting the left arm back into the shoulder socket of a worker drone. "Now, this is going to hurt for 5 seconds, One-Seventeen," she informed gently, "So squeeze my left hand reaaaaally tight with your right hand, okay?"
The unnamed little maid nodded and held the teen girl's hand as tight as she felt she could do safely.
Tessa counted to 5 under her breath and popped the arm back in on the worker drone sitting on the work bench.
117 winced in pain at first but once the moment passed she wiggled her fingers on her left hand.
"Can you give me a high five?" Tessa asked as she held her hand at the ready.
The worker maid drone high-fived Tessa and smiled. "Thank you again, Miss Tessa."
The ebony haired girl helped the drone back onto the ground, she trilled happily, "Well, if you need another repair or anything, come find me. I love helping." She watched the little drone head away before a little monotone voice greeted the Elliott heiress
"[Giggle] you sure are good at f-fixing us up," The little odd drone climbed onto the seat next to Tessa while verbalizing her actions, "[climb climb sit]"
"Oh, Cyn, you gotta let me know when you're there, ya little dingo."
The drone with hair the same style as the human girl blinked slowly in confusion, her golden LED eyes curious. "Why is that? [head tilt] Does it scare you?"
Tessa wanted to say 'yeah a little' but responded bravely, "No, I would've asked you maybe for some help if you wanted to help, that is."
"I wa-want t-to help [smile]" Cyn pleaded in her computery voice, "Please teach me, Tessa"
Tessa smiled, she had a small soft spot for the broken little drone that fawned over her. "Well, ok, let me show you on you, alright?" She gently put her right hand on Cyn's right hand, asking the alabaster haired drone, "Only if that's okay."
Cyn nodded as she says "[nods happily]"
Tessa took a little rubber mallet and explained sweetly, "Well, drones and human bodies have similar reflex nerves, let me just..." she took the little mallet and tapped Cyn's knee.
Cyn stared curiously at where Tessa had tapped and then her leg kicked up as she exclaimed "[KICK]" "Funny" Cyn beeped approvingly, "Do again! Do again!"
The grey eyed adolescent girl hit Cyn's other knee with the rubber mallet.
Cyn once again watched as her left knee kicked upwards as Cyn exclaimed once more, "[KICK]"
Tessa and Cyn looked at each other and both started laughing because it was adorable, after which, Tessa put away the reflex hammer. She gave Cyn a very warm and caring hug, leaning into it enough for the little drone to feel safe, but not enough to overwhelm Cyn's busted steel spine. She gently let go of the robot to not overwhelm her. "You're so precious, Cyn."
"Pr-precious?"
Tessa reassured as she tucked a section of Cyn's white hair behind her left auditory sensor, "It's a very good word, it means cherished, valued, loved, special."
Cyn lifted her hands to her chest and repeated the word, "Precious."
Tessa lightly tapped her finger on the spot on Cyn's face where a nose would be had Cyn been a human child. "You're learning so much every day. I'm proud of you."
Cyn smiled as she kept holding her hands over her chest. "Proud," she continued, "Meaning you are h-happy with me."
Tessa nodded, smiling still kindly as she invited, "If I'm ever in the garage, feel free to come with me. I could always use a hand getting tools or to keep me company."
Cyn repeated back in a monotone voice that still mimicked Tessa's Aussie accent, "Company!"
Tessa patted Cyn on the head, lovingly reassuring, "You're alright, Cyn. I'm glad I saved you"
Over the next few weeks, Cyn helped Tessa repair robots in the garage, assuming innocently that it was so because the odd little drone wanted to be helpful, but the malicious truth remained hidden, alike a ticking time bomb beneath the floorboards of the library
The End...

Dasyurus maculates, better known as the tiger quoll, the spotted-tail quoll, the spotted quoll, the spotted-tail dasyure, native cat or the tiger cat, is a carnivorous marsupial native to eastern and southern Australia and the island of Tasmania. These semi-arboreal mammals can be found in a variety of habitats including mixed dry and alpine forests, pastureland, and grasslands, but seem to prefer wetter environments such as riverine forests, rainforests and closed eucalypt forest. Tiger quolls are generally nocturnal, spending there days in dens they build in burrows, caves, rock crevices, tree hollows, hollow logs, or abandoned buildings. They emerge at night to hunt prey such as insects, crustaceans, lizards, snakes, frogs, birds, platypus, echidnas, rabbits, possums, cuscuses, gliders, bandicoots, pademelons, small wallabies, and wombats. Tiger quolls are themselves preyed upon by Tasmanian devils, masked owls, dingos, large pythons, and wedge-tailed eagles. Reaching around 27 to 45 inches (69 to 113cms) in length and 3 to 15lbs (1.3 to 7kgs) in weight, with females being a far bit smaller than males, the tiger quoll is the second largest carnivorous marsupial on earth after the Tasmanian devil. At 308 newtons the tiger quoll also sports the second most powerful bite relative to body size of any living mammalian carnivore, after the Tasmanian devil. The tiger quoll has relatively short legs, a tail as long as the rest of its body, a thick neck, and large head with an elongated rounded snout. Each foot has 5 toes with pink foot pads are ridged, an adaptation for its arboreal lifestyle. The fur is typically reddish brown, occasionally black, with a creamy white colored underside. Mating occurs from april into july. The gestation period in this species lasts for 21 days, yielding 5 young on average. The babies are then moved to the pouch of their mother, where they continue to grow for the following 12 weeks. The young become fully independent by 18 to 21 weeks of age, reach sexual maturity at 1 year, and may live up to 7 years.

What to do when you are a leafling: a Dandori battle
(originally I had a whole thing planned involing the water wraith but then I was hit with a bigger idea with the whole plot so stay tuned for it ;3)
The moment Pom exited the S.S Beagle, she saw the red leafling and the dog. In the dog’s mouth was another castaway! Pom smiled to herself as she sent Blue Pikmin to defeat a Pearly Clamclamp. Attack, whistle, retreat, attack, whistle, retreat until it is dead. Watching the min carry the Pearly Clamclamp, Pom climbed onto Oatchi and pointed at the red leafling.
The cave door opened and the red Leafling jumped in. Adjusting her whistle Pom jumped in.
In the cave, Pom watched while the dog dragged the castaway into the onion. She barley flinched at the result now. However by the red Leafling’s side was a dark blue coloured Leafling wearing a similar get up to the red one.
“Collin, do you see this? There’s two of them now.” Pom said.
“I do and there's another castaway! You know what to do Rookie.” Collin said, he turned at the sound of the ship door opening. In walked Shepherd and Dingo with Jack riding the lone ranger’s shoulder. Collin motioned to the three to look at the footage. Dingo grabbed his helmet and put it on
Jack looked around the ship. It was huge and messy with funny looking tools strewn around and a whole pile of white cloth. The bald one, or Russ as Shepherd called him, walked up to the comms station. The whole group huddled around Collin.
Meanwhile in the arena, Pom directed the dandori Pikmin with some struggle. The Red leafling seemed to be quicker on his feet than before. Expertly directing his min to various giant’s fruits and monster corpses. It didn't help that by his side was that blue Leafling lending an extra hand to the red Leafling.
Pom whistled and tossed multiple Ice Pikmin at the leaf tailed dog, she then pressed a button on her suit. Calling down the lighting that this arena so happily provided. The dog stood there stunned while Pom directed more Pikmin to steal the golden sniffer that it had.
“Oh no! Is Moss…” the red leafling said, quickly running over to his onion to sigh in relief as Moss returned.
“That’s good, yes! Get that dog for me Pom!” Dingo’s voice echoed over the coms, causing an explosion of chatter on coms.
“The leafling has called his dog Moss? Not a bad name for her!” Shepherd happily said.
“That's the dog that turned Bernard!”
“So its leaf tail lets it breathe oxygen too.” Russ said.
“Hey um Shepherd? Why is Oatchi doing fine in this atmosphere?” Dingo asked.
“I’ll tell you after this Evans.”
Pom giggled to herself at that.
“Evans?” she said, watching the ice Pikmin carry the golden sniffer into her dandori onion.
“Don't mind that Amarde and win!”
A minute later Pom stood there victorious, the Red leafling huffed and climbed onto Moss, grabbing the blue one as well.
“You have won this one…meet me…in the hideaway…” The red Leafling said. The Blue one lifted their head and stared straight into Pom’s eyes.
“You…Dandori…to save them?” was what the blue one said before the Red leafling rode away.
–
At Hero’s hideaway, Olimar took off his suit. Louie stood there dizzyingly and sat down on the pilot's seat. Olimar ran to Moss and took out a nearly empty first aid kit, he unfurled the bandages and wrapped it around the dog’s leg. “You did great out there…You did well…I didn't do Dandori well enough…That’s okay…I need to…turn more to test Dandori.” Olimar petted Moss and scratched her under the chin. He blew the whistle and in a moment Louie delivered a scrummy bone for her.
“Thank you Louie.” He said. Moss perked up and chomped the bone. She happily barked and rubbed up against Louie and Olimar. She then whimpered a little and sat back down.
“Louie…if I am taken…you can dandori in my place.” Olimar said, placing a hand on his co-worker’s shoulder. He smiled a little and walked back to Moss, giving the dog a tight hug.
The Rookie, or Pom as I have heard over the coms, has injured Moss. Although as much as I want to say, it seems that when I look at her dog I get the feeling that something is going to happen to him. I hope that they are able to save me soon or I dare not wish to think what will happen to that dog.
(isn’t it weird that it’s implied that olimar has some level of psychic power? Being able to have dreams of the future Is probably either just a cute little wink to the past or seeing the future so I’m just running with the latter one)

Why i think Dook is a King Charles Spaniel. This is gonna be long.
So to start, we start with appearance! Dook's got a kinda tired, weary looking face, though he looks content and happy to be there. His head is quite round due to the build of the animatronics. He has a shorter snout than Rolfe, though it isn't considered a short snout, more medium. His snout is rounded in like a W in the center where his upper lip should be. He's got a big black nose, and he's got dusty brown fur, blue eyes, and a tan peach face. He doesn't appear to have any visible fur markings or a tail. Now i turn you over to the comparison
So let's look at the more obvious comparisons first. The snouts are rounded inward in the same way, and the corners of the mouth turn up quite the same. The noses are vaguely in the same spot though Dook has a pretty big nose so it's hard to say. The heads are rounded with ears coming off the top of the head and draping down. Dook's ears stick out due to the mechanics in the ears, so they seem to be around chin length, maybe a bit near neck length.
For more of the facial feature side, in the first dog pic you can see the dogs face, under the eyes. Both Dook and the Cavaliers have under eye bags. In the first dog pic, on the sides of it's face, there's two triangle cut ins under their eyes. It's similar to how Dook's fur on his mask is cut, though it's not a definitive comparison since the Rock-afire masks do that with the fur on all of them. Second dog pic, the lying dog. You can see how the "eyebrows" are turned upward, kinda chunky looking. You guessed it, that's how Dook's go. His fur is brown though, a color uncommon for Cavaliers in that shade. Ruby cavaliers, the name of the color, can range in colors of brilliant ruby red, to a dusty bronze or even brown.
I believe I'm done with the comparisons, so here's more evidence to back up why I think he is a Cavalier, story wise. So Dook is based loosely off of the build of Dingo Starr, a dog that plays drums. So Dingo has the same floppy ears as Dook, looks pretty similar, I'll say they're the same breed of dog, yeah? So King Charles Spaniels have a pretty interesting history, but what sticks out to me here is that King Charles Spaniels originate from the United Kingdom. Y'know, Dingo's British isn't he? Being a Beatles inspired character I'd have to say so. And he was a pretty small guy compared to Dook and the Wp5 and Rae. Aaron had to size Dook up when he first made him. But Cavaliers are a small breed of dog, they'd fit in your arms with ease. Though the color Dingo is isn't common in Cavaliers, unless you wanna say he's a ruby cavalier, but his fur is like a creamy unsaturated brown. But what I'm getting to is that Dingo being British also adds into the evidence. I know Dook is from New Orleans, but him and Dingo appear to be the same breed, so it'd make sense for dingo to be British to mesh in with cavalier lore.
Different part. You guys know beta Dook right? The flannel, the flat cap, the gold chain. Makes me shiver just thinking about it. So I don't know if it's just a vintage camera thing, but he looks pretty red to me. He's also reddish in a valentine's card thing but Billy Bob also looked a little ginger so.
I don't believe Aaron has said what dog he is, but to me it looks like Dook is modeled off of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I just don't think he's a Beagle, he's got a very round head and beagles have youthful non wrinkled faces, at least compared to Dook I do see that Cavaliers have pretty long fur unlike Dook, especially on the chest, and the legs. I see that, and I raise the idea that Dook just shaves his fur cause for one, Dook lives in New Orleans, which isn't exactly cold. I could also see him doing it to y'know, look manly and not a fluffy rug? Although cavalier's don't have a lot of fluff on the face so Dook could easily just be really fluffy under that jumpsuit. Oh and cavalier's normally don't have blue eyes unless they have white markings on the face but he's got his whole flesh face thing going on and who knows, maybe he's got white markings under the jumpsuit
So yeah that's why I think he's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Tell me what you think!

what the hell is up with that dingo story dude
I don't know, mate. The more I think about it the weirder it gets and the more I psych myself out over it.
Whatever that thing was, it wasn't a dingo. Weird shit's happened to me ever since I let Jack pierce my nose but that thing wasn't a fucking dingo. Everything about it was too wrong. Too much fat in the pelt, it had dew claws on the hind legs which dingos never have, the proportions were off, legs too long, tail too long, muzzle too short, ears too round, body too wide, but it had a white tail tip and white paws like pure dingos do, it yipped like dingos do, it watched me like dingos do.
Either way, it wasn't a dingo, and that thing was dead the moment I shot it. I'm sure of it.

Beach/pool day!! What color/pattern are the skellie's swimsuits and what activity do they prefer to do?
Macaw- All his usual clothes, and he's staying in the shade away from the water.
Lupo- Orange swim trunks with little white bones on them, and a white tshirt. He's immediately in the water, and that white tshirt is completely useless, just meant to show off his bones.
Falcon- Dark red swim trunks with black pinstripping. He's dragging Macaw down the beach sand and preparing to toss him into the water.
Jackal- Her fem ecto out, she's in a black swimsuit that is classy yet revealing, and she is sunning herself with a long island iced tea in hand.
Jay- Blue swim trunks with yellow stars, and is building a sand sculpture of himself with muscles. Which Ink knocks over 'on accident'.
Fox- Orange and white striped old style swimsuit- like old cartoons wore. The one piece with sleeves and shorts legs. And he's sunscreened the fuck up and hiding under an umbrella.
Crow- Purple swim trunks with a black tshirt on. He's brought all the supplies to keep Chamomile safe and just helicopters them a bit. Until he locks eyelights with Jay then it's Competition Time.
Hound- Purple speedo to embarrass his brother. He's sunning himself next to Fox and the two joke back and forth.
Vulture- Dark blue swim trunks and a white tshirt, a sun hat on and soooo much food. Enjoying watching Falcon toss Macaw screaming into the water.
Hyena- Dark orange swim trunks with little white bones on it, also a sun hat and sunglasses as he debates hunting the beach seagulls for sport.
Robin- Blue full body wetsuit and a shark fin on. Tormenting the swimmers.
Dingo- Dark red swim trunks with black pawprints on, his hoodie too, and barking at the water before yipping as the wave comes in and he runs from it.

[Image ID: The image is a four paneled comic created by Chatsvoid. The first panel takes place in, what looks like, a Savannah plain with mountains in the background, five trees and two lions. The foreground shows a four legged canine animal, likely a Dingo, looking at the two distant lions. A purple Dingo walks next to the regularly shaded Dingo. The regular Dingo asks the purple Dingo, “Why does hate from strangers bother me so much?” The second panel shows the two lions in the background assume aggressive poses. The purple Dingo has a white skull for a face. The purple Dingo says to the regular Dingo, “Well they don’t hate YOU. (You being capitalized)”. The third panel shows the regular dingo’s profile being within the purple Dingos profile. The purple Dingo says “They can only hate their idea of you. Besides…” The fourth panel continues the purple Dingo’s words, “It’s unfair to the love around you to focus so much on a few angry voices.” The fourth panel depicts the regular Dingo being surrounded by six other Dingos. The regular Dingo has a symbol, that looks like a flame with a circle in the center and verticals shooting out above it, over its head that is the same shade of purple as the purple Dingo was, seemingly implying that the purple Dingo is a projection of the regular Dingo and that they are one. The regular Dingo looks happy with his tongue hanging out slightly and it’s eyes closed. The six surrounding Dingos look happy, excited, and generally lovingly at the regular Dingo. /.End ID]
This comic hits me hard in the best way. I’ve spent much of my life hiding myself in plain sight. I expended a lot of energy trying to people please. I was terrified of receiving hate from strangers. I felt like it was my responsibility, or place, to ensure that everybody had an “accurate” (to me) depiction of me in their head. I’ve recently learned that what other people think of me, or how they perceive me, is genuinely none of my business and is certainly not my responsibility to control. And I think it was kind of toxic for me to try to control other people’s idea of me. I know who I am. I know that my intentions are pure. I don’t need everybody to approve of me to know that I’m valid. I’ve learned to validate myself and now I really don’t need other’s validation. By validating myself, I set myself free.
This comic reminded me that even if people hate “me” they really hate their image of me in their mind. And it’s okay if they do hate that image of me because that’s not actually me. And even if they did hate me, that would be okay, too. I don’t need everybody to like me anyways.

Still reading Noreen Clark's A Dog for the Job, on the history of the Australian Cattle Dog (and the Australian Stumpy-Tailed Cattle Dog), which is as endearingly bitchy a dog history book as any I've seen.
I had not realized that Italian Greyhound had been proffered as a source for the blue roan heeler coat at about the same time (and by the same person) as that bizarre Dalmatian bit. I, ah. What? What the fuck?
Nor had I previously seen some of the color justifications Kaleski made to go along that appalling garbage about the Bentley spot.
(I still see people on Reddit confidently insisting that the Bentley spot, the white spot on the forehead seen on many heelers, is a sign of old purebred ACD ancestry. Look, Benton has one and he's about 25% ACD! It's actually just that for whatever reason, ticked or roaned dogs typically don't tick or roan through any white on that spot, and ACDs are one of two heavily ticked/roaned breeds that routinely breeds for sufficiently extreme piebald that there's usually no head spot covering that place, either. And the other one is Dalmatians, on whom a small part of the dog without spots fades much more easily into the white background. One of these days I'm going to go collect Bentley spots on non-ACD dogs of known ancestry.)
Anyway the same dude was all "oh they need red brown legs so they don't show the dirt" (WTF it's not like anyone gives a shit) and "oh the blue ones are good for night time so the cows can't see where to kick but the red ones are real hardy because you can see the dingo ancestry." Okay, man. Sure.
The thing I find interesting, reading between the lines, is that the dingo fixation sure seems to me like an aggressive attempt to distinguish the nascent cattle dogs from Smithfields (themselves more of a descendant of the bearded collie/OES family of things) by rhapsodizing on the importance of prick ears and a short coat.
Dog people never change, but the hilarity certainly intensifies as you dig through history...

Photo
[ID: Photos of four different dingoes, all in the same pose, shown standing from the side with their heads turned toward the camera. The first is black with tan patches on its muzzle, chest, and legs. The second is mostly light tan with a black "saddle" patch on its back. The third is mostly white with a few light brown and black patches on its face and back, and its muzzle appears more squarish than the rest. The fourth is light reddish brown. End ID.]
Dingoes are diverse! They don’t all look like the fella in the last photo, but for all intents and purposes, they are all dingoes. These dingoes are being researched in the one area and population, and are closely related (from the same kin group). The variation in colour morphology cannot be the only thing considered when you look at a dingo. These animals have the same genes, the same skull morphology, body structure, behaviour, hunting patterns and live entirely independent of humans. These are not a feral domestic species, they are dingoes - Canis Dingo, not Canis Lupus or Canis Familiaris.
edit: There is a 178 SMITH ET AL. · Zootaxa 4564 (1) © 2019 Magnolia Press “…general perception, both in the scientific literature and the lay public more generally, that dingoes are uniformly yellow (or ginger) with white markings at the extremities. However, while this is often the case, old skins show that other pelage colourations also existed in remote areas in the 19th Century, including animals that were black with brown extremities, animals with dark dorsal fur (sable colouration), and white (Crowther et al. 2014).
Wild dingoes experience natural selection on a wider gene pool, which maintains dominant trait phenotypes and heterozygous genotypes (Parr et al. 2016). Most of the world’s dogs live semi-autonomous mutualistic relationships with humans (Barnett & Rudd 1983; Gompper 2014). In this most common condition, the dog phenotype does share some generic traits with dingoes. However, this phenotype is much more variable than the dingo phenotype — i.e., they can still exhibit flopped ears, spotty/patchy coat — depending on the ancestry of the domestic dog breed. Village dogs in Southeast Asia can share superficial phenotypic similarity to dingoes, but are distinguishable from dingoes on a range of morphological, phenotypic, and genetic variables (Corbett 1985; Gonzalez 2012; Cairns & Wilton 2016).”
#wow!!!#i wonder how much this is influenced by crossbreeding with regular domestic dogs#especially the third one#really cool either way#aminals#dog#dingo
