I had so much fun working on this, I accidentally hurt my eyes 😅 (I'm better now! Took a good long screen break 👍)

I’m trying to make this a portfolio piece. I’m supposed to spend about 8 hours on this but I got stuck at around 4. I thought using a greyscale underpainting would make things easier but I think I got too hung up on the greyscale part. And maybe I shouldn’t have been following the sketch so ridgedly... So one version has lines and the other doesn’t. I really like inking though I’ll admit the lines are a little flat. The lineless one is because I turned off the inks layer by accident and I actually like the effect? But I don’t think I’ll be able to use the lineless one as-is. I like what I’ve did so far so I want to finish it. I just aren’t sure where to go from here.

Some choice doodles because I forgot all about this blog :P Most of them are places around my campus. The last one is a Splatoon map, Piranha Pit.

I wondered what it would be like if I tackled an architecture drawing like a gesture drawing? So it has a 30 second base (with another 30 seconds because, as it turns out, I can’t quite draw architecture gestures in 30 seconds) which I then drew a more refined drawing on top. I also needed to work on shading and volume so no gesture for the second doodle. I just noticed I didn’t draw the right shoulder right. Ah, there’s a number of things that need work. Next time~

I didn’t darken the foreground before scanning so I threw up a quick Photoshop gradient thing. I really should’ve done it by hand but I was feeling that it was already getting a bit too busy. The town and farmland looked a bit better before I “inked” it. Whoops. I’m really happy that the distant forest and mountains came out nice!

I didn’t use a perspective grid and kinda freaked out a little. I can’t fake perspective yet so I end up flailing and forfeiting. I also didn’t have a plan drawing this out, so that didn’t help matters. Next time I’ll draw quick thumbs of the floor plan before diving in.

I was thinking about fog the other day. How it tends to kill scale and depth. It’s fascinating. Also fascinating is my tendency to put something large on the left hand side. Definitely a quirk I should keep in mind.

Something quick and dirty cuz I haven’t really been putting the “daily” into “daily doodle”. Mm, composition feels a bit lopsided. Maybe I should’ve put something on the right side...

Going back to a “comfort zone” to build up some confidence before wrecking myself with perspective again. Still need to work on depicting scale. Also probably needs more foliage, that means looking up references which I really need to get into the habit of doing.

Scale is very important and what’s good at conveying scale is windows. I didn’t think windows would give me a hard time but they’re incredibly important and I need to pay more attention to them. I also didn’t convey how this city is built on crystals very well OTL Next time!

I either need to use a reference, perspective grid or watch my scale. And a darker pencil. Learning!
