Lily and Mikila saying that Hunter is bad for being an "overdone trope" is so weird to me because like. Aren't ALL character archetypes over done??? In fact, this same logic can be applied to other characters within the show itself. Luz Noceda is an overdone trope; she's the bubbly "quirky" female protagonist who is also very kind and empathetic.

Her character archetype is actually more over done than Hunter's when you really think about it, especially in terms of Disney protagonists in the 2010s and early 2020s. Amity Blight is also an overdone trope; a bully character who goes through a redemption arc and becomes one of the main characters. Also has abusive parents as a way to explain their behavior and earn them sympathy from the audience. Amity's archetype, like Luz's, is arguably more overdone than Hunter's in a lot of media even outside of Disney.

Of course, this isn't exactly a bad thing; tropes are tools after all, and you can make generic ideas work with the right execution. Luz and Amity execute their respective archetypes well due to them having real depth and development over the course of the show, and, guess what? Hunter also executes his archetype pretty well too.

Story tropes are not inherently good or bad, they exist in every story and can be used effectively to create a compelling narrative, so docking points from a character for being a "over done trope" feels like a very bad faith critique, since, again, this same logic can be applied to other characters within the show.

Lily's only problem is that Hunter is an archetype she doesn't like and therefore her critique is heavily biased.

....Also he's an "angsty white boy" and Luz and Amity aren't. Sorry, I almost forgot.

So uh... I've watched a bit of Lily's pokemon retrospective. And oh god is it awful. Especially in the gen 5 section since she skips character dialogue and misconstrued everyone's character.

And now I'm playing Pokemon White out of spite. I even named my character Rose because we all know how much Lily loves SU.

so Lily basically said the rizz was a stupid nonsense word and that kids always had dumb slang so adults shouldn’t git riled up about it and form my understanding someone politely told her that rizz and several other slang words were actually AAV and she just deleted their comments and blocked them.

for a “colonized, out of touch with culture cherokee” woman, she sure does like to dictate the slang coming out of people’s mouths. if she did a quick google search she’d know these words have history in black culture…

This Month's Favs

Gabe @words-writ-in-starlight (wordswritinstarlight on Storygraph) : The Husky & His White Cat Shizun (2ha) Volume 6 by Meatbun Doesn't Eat Meat. Runner up is the whole Murderbot series by Martha Wells (on a re-listen). They refuse to pick favorites.

Nic (businesswife) : The Sacrifice by Rin Chupeco for fav novel and Re-Living My Life with A Boyfriend who Doesn't Remember Me by Gin Shirakawa was their favorite manga.

Meghan (edgybutfemme): The Husky & His White Cat Shizun was also probably my fav, with the final Guardian by Priest as a very close second. Literally any month I read a 2ha volume it'll be hard to pick a different fav book.

We had an absolutely wild August, but thankfully we managed to fit some reading in (especially devouring some of the manga we got at AnimeNYC)!

Comparisons between Kingdom Hearts and classcical anime aren't unfounded, it's true. Moreover, it's not just "mere coincidence" either.

Kingdom Hearts has very openly been a love letter to animation, both Western and Japanese. How anyone could miss that considering that it's the entire focus of the series, with classic Disney characters in its staring role, is beyond me.

The characters original to Kingdom Hearts are inspired by Anime! You're going to see parallels of classic anime characters, plots, visuals, and also subversions of them all over the place! Kingdom Hearts is doing it on purpose!
