WHITE COLLAR FINALE SPOILERS. (I got you new watchers dw babe šŸ˜˜)
The hashtags in this reblog brought up the bullets in the gun and do I have a story for you I rewatched the finale with a fine toothed comb a couple months ago and the tl:dr is that those bullets are rife with continuity errors and thereā€™s no plausible way it worked at all.
I present, the rambling analysis of everything wrong with the bullets and the only (very unlikely) possibilities:
When Neal shoots the mannequin near the start, there are three or possibly four bullets in the revolverā€”one goes in the dummy and two more are visible, with at least two clearly empty chambers. One chamber not visible, but presumed empty.
When Neal cocks the gun on Keller, all chambers appear emptyā€”but lighting is poor and this is very possibly just a gun safety on set thing. Appears to remain empty during Kellerā€™s monologue, but see prior point.
During the street scene: while Keller holds the revolver on the hostages head, and draws on Peter, all chambers still appear empty. Keller never fires, he may or may not have known it was empty.
In the flashback when Peter is in the shipping container: Kellerā€™s gun has one bullet on each side of the firing chamber, and appears empty in the firing chamber. I think this was intentional given the click, Neal planned it this way. The maths of how a revolver turns and fires does not work for that be the same gun Neal fires at himself, without changing the position of the bullets. If it was an empty fire at himself, which I think it was, the chamber on the 2 oā€™clock side of the firing chamber wouldnā€™t have a bullet in it.
Peter shoots Keller with his FBI gun, not the revolver.
Worth noting the firing chamber appears empty at all times, which was probably a gun safety on set thing. It appears empty just before Neal shoots the mannequin, when itā€™s clearly not. [But also Iā€™ve never seen a revolver irl so maybe Iā€™m wrong].
Itā€™s likely the shot that ā€˜killed himā€™ in the tunnel was always intended by Neal to be an empty fireā€”bc yes the bullet the hospital gives is the one from the mannequin. [I canā€™t remember if there was the sound of a shell casing hitting the ground, but also maybe he just dropped it? Idk, but I donā€™t believe we ever saw a shell casing on the ground].
On the table in the shipping container is four remaining bullets, but given one went in the mannequin and there was at least two in the/a revolver in the tunnel/street, there was at least seven bullets.
Conclusion: while it barely technically works, I think the idea/implication (my theory) is that he fired a blank on himself in the tunnel. I also donā€™t see anyway for him to have not readjusted/reloaded the bullets between the mannequin and the tunnel, given all the positions. While I understand it representing Neal fucking Keller over one last time, the empty chamber in the firing slot with the bullet on the right hand side (again, only in the flashback) is the thing really creating continuity super bad errors. Neal would have to blank fire himself, release fake blood, and then reload a revolver all with Keller watching and without him noticing. Technically possible, but also incredibly unlikely even for him.
Assuming the flashback was wrong (maybe Peterā€™s remembering wrong? Weā€™ll go with that) then the gun couldā€™ve been entirely empty that entire final day/scene.
Lastly; whoever made the decision to put the four bullets in the shipping container is the bane of my existence.

It's here! This is my original song "Where I Cannot Follow" that explores Peter's POV in the White Collar Finale. I hope you enjoy :) Lyrics below the cut. *series finale spoilers!!!*
VERSE 1
Diamond and gemstones Stars in the sky Nothing will be as bright as your eyes I didnā€™t ask for you in my life But you came-burning bright
Tumbling, crashing, heart on the ground I always knew you wanted to be found Please let me bring you Into my life I canā€™t live without your light
CHORUS
Why do you run where I cannot follow? Why do you tread where I cannot go? Now Iā€™m left here with memories and shadows and your voice calling come find me
VERSE 2
Paintings and treasures cards, cryptic clues Every path taken led me to you And oh how I fought guarded it true You stole my heart, and I yours, too.
Bickering, bantering laughter and tears How I loved chasing you all of those years And what would I give for just one more run Let follow you Into the Sun?
CHORUS FINAL Now you are free Just not how I wanted Now you can run untethered, untamed Where ever you are I hope you are happy And at rest from running..away
Note: 'music box theme' is quoted in between verses in during the intro and outro is from the white collar tv show score and all credit goes to whoever composed that 4-note motif. Chords, melody and lyrics by me. :)
I do not give permission for my voice to be used in AI in any format.

Ok, but hear me out. Neal never heard Peter say that. We all know it, we all understand it, but what if Neal doesn't really understand it?
Neal keeps saying Peter and El are family, but Neal doesn't really know what family is. His father abandonned them. From the little we know about his mother ("there, but not there"), she was probably not very demonstrative and he doesn't seem that attached to her. Ellen was his surrogate family, but then he ran away. They sorta vaguely kept in touch but you know, it was all fine. Long distance family. Then, Mozzie, who was his closest friend. And I'm not saying Mozzie was a bad friend, but Mozzie was also the kind of friend who'd rather stay on the island a little longer. Who doesn't keep in touch while you're in jail. They've probably have grown closer *during* the show than they really were before. Maybe because they both matured. But the point is, Neal's earlier relationship with Mozzie had shown him Mozzie coulf fair without him.
So from Neal's experience, his whole life before he met Peter, everyone he's considered family or close friends seemed to have survived just fine without him. He doesn't know that kind of attachement that Peter has formed. And yes, Peter has covered for him multiple times, Peter did show affection time and again, but did its true depth really register?
It's like that famous island reunion hug. Peter can't repress it. Peter's entire body expresses his relief at being reunited with his runaway kid. He literally buries Neal in his bear hug. But Neal doesn't seem to compute that. Neal barely hugs back. Because no one has ever tried that hard to get him back before. And he doesn't know what to do about that.
Peter has also, at times, been tough on him. I mean the whole S5 thing (don't get me wrong, I totally get where Peter comes from, I'm one of the 2 people on Earth who don't mind S5), but given Neal's past, his biased mind might have given more weight to the proofs of rejection than to the proofs of attachement. And in the end, Neal might have concluded - wrongly - that Peter, ultimately, like everyone else in his life, would just move on.
Anyway, just a thought, that occured to me right there. Neal genuinely thought that Peter could live without him, because that's what life has taught him.
(Look at me, took me 9 years to defend that finale LOL)

It's been 9 years since the finale and I'm finally able to write fic about this episode. In fact, my Operation More White Collar holiday prompt fic is very much about these things.
So. Much. Angst.
3K words and counting. Here's hoping I finish it soon so I can post it and share all of that angst with the world.
WE NEED TO TALK. (Please. I just finished Season 6 again.) They didn't even show El's reaction to you know what. Not even Jones' not even Diana's not even June's. To them, it must have been devastating news. To lose Neal so shortly before his supposed release. They weren't giving him true freedom but they believed they would. They wished it for him. He must have a memorial somewhere and how often does Peter visit it??? To us and to Neal, it was closure, but to everyone else it was a shocking end to a high-profile, but otherwise normal case. To unexpectedly lose a colleague like that, and not just that... NEAL of all people... someone they'd worked with for more than two years... do you think Peter has his picture hanging on the wall next to Siegel's. Do you.
ohmygod ohmygod okay yes please. Its been years and i've rewatched it countless times and i'm still devastated over his loss and how it must have affected everyone. part of me thinks that the show-runners didn't include all of the mourning so that the show wouldn't end on that heavy of a note but !!!! closure !!! PLEASE !
like, he had become family to Peter and El and June, and we see nothing of how the news affects El and June. Neal was someone El loved, dearly, someone who ate meals at their house and who became a constant, welcome presence. He was El's "partner in crime" and the person she'd go to whenever Peter wasn't the suitable option (whether because the issue was concern for Peter, or because she didn't want Peter to worry). She lost a friend, family member (almost lover, depending on if you're into that ship), and on top of that, she lost him while pregnant (with the son they name after neal).
and June? she's left again with a big, quiet empty house afterward, except now she's lost both Byron and Neal. And we don't get to see how she copes with that!! Obviously she has other family, and she still has Mozzie, but it's not the same.
Diana and Jones too of course, almost more so, because they go from spending every week day with Neal, to...an empty desk and Peter's probably all-consuming grief, if the little epilogue is anything to go by (him still faltering, still seeing Neal where he isn't, after so much time has passed). Like, yes he was a colleague, and a pain in the ass colleague at that, but he was also.. the person they'd have drinks with, when their personal lives were falling apart. Neal is the one who helped Diana through the end of her long-term relationship! He's more than just a coworker to these people!
And don't get me started on Sara. "To another time, another life. To another us" Sara, who loved Neal so much she could barely bear Neal's (fake but really real) proposal, and who clearly dreamed of another version of the world where they could be together. Who gives her the news? Does she book the next flight to New York for his funeral? Assuming Neal doesn't immediately seek her out once he's in Europe, she has to cope with losing who she probably considered the love of her life.
And we don't get to see any their grieving process at all. Again, i know a big drawn out funeral doesn't really fit the tone of the show, but it still feels like such a robbery (haha) of an opportunity to see the positive impact Neal had on so many people. In a way, I think it was almost a failing on the show-runners' parts, because it would have continued to humanize Neal in the way that the show had spent all six seasons doing. Like, this is a pathological thief and liar with a mile-long list of crimes, but he is also human and loved and loving!! He has no biological family, but he has become family to almost every person in his life. And then suddenly he's gone and life goes on and we don't know how any of them (aside from Peter and Moz) handle the news of his death. It makes me so sad.
This is getting so long oops. Anyway. He definitely has a memorial, and Peter probably visits so often that El worries (she visits often too, of course, but Peter goes every weekend, at first, and maybe more often on bad days, or when there are cases that make him think of Neal, either because they'd be easier to solve with Neal's help, or because they look like something he'd have done).
Honestly, I'm not sure if Peter would keep Neal's photo next to Siegel's. I think, for the first few months at least, he wouldn't. I think it would hurt too much. Maybe there's one out in the main room by Neal's desk, and once Peter can walk past that one without choking up, he puts one up in his office.

so i know the scene where Neal is drugged and tells Peter "out of everyone in my life, mozzie, even kate, you're the only one i trust" it's partly manipulation to get Peter to help him so the words maybeee can't totally be taken at face value, BUT. it just makes me so so sad for Neal. can you imagine how lonely that must be? to be going through life without having anyone you feel you can truly trust and rely on?
it makes the last two seasons all that more devastating ā€“ Peter's constant distrust of Neal, paired with the whole Rebecca situation reinforcing Neal's lifelong belief of being on his own in the world/unable to rely on anyone. To have the one person in the world he had allowed himself to trust criticizing and doubting him at every turn after everything... i'm so sad for him

I always think about how the whole gang was feeling when they thought Neal was gone but never stopped to think about how Neal must've felt after what he did. He had to hurt all those people who welcomed him to their family specially Mozzie, Peter and June just to protect them all and now he's all alone with a new identity, in a new country with no one to talk and needing to start a new life all over again just like he did when he ran at 18.
