I Cherish You, Halcyon Days: prologue.
“You’re gonna die, kid. In the worst way possible.”
tags: afab!reader (she/her), angst, slow burn
pairing: gojou x reader + onesided!getou x reader
summary: You’re 15 years old when you’re told you’re going to die. You’re 17 years old when you realize who your killer will be. And you’re 17 years old when you make peace with the fact you wouldn’t want it any other way.

In the summer of 1997 when I was 7, I almost drowned at the beach.
It was one of those summers where you watch a movie and things felt whimsical because you watched one movie about a group of kids going on a life-changing adventure you’d never go on yourself. You looked for magic in your daily life because even the smallest thing could be what led to you stumbling upon a new journey. My life-changing adventure movie? Free Willy, the movie about that foster kid and an orca. My aunt, a marine biologist, who showed me the movie always said the ocean was her greatest love. I got what she meant when I saw that movie. So that summer I spent at my aunt’s place in Enoshima was the summer I decided I’d go on some sort of adventure myself.
My expectation? Freeing Mina the beluga whale and swimming on her back to wherever the beluga whales came from. I would have even taken Kukki the dugong who I sometimes fed extra fish to when no one was looking.
What I actually got? Getting caught up in an undertow at Higashihama Beach.
Yeah, not my dream summer experience.
Undertow wasn’t a concept foreign to me at that time. Auntie warned me all about itー about how sometimes the currents below and above the surface went in separate directions.
“Don’t fight it when that happens,” she told me. “You’ll tire yourself out and drown. I know it’ll be scary but if you ever get caught in undertow, don’t fight. Go with the current and once it subsides, that’s when you swim back.”
That advice was far from my mind when I actually got caught in one though.
I screamed and thrashed and fought and fought, I probably pissed in the water twice too to boot.
And yet ー and I’m not entirely sure why ー a calm suddenly fell over me and I remembered Auntie’s words.
It would be scary, but don’t fight it.
Five minutes later, I swam back to shore and cried for ten minutes while my aunt held me.
Scary was one hell of an understatement.
I swore up and down I’d never go to the beach again. I never wanted to feel that scared again, never ever. My aunt didn’t disparage me for it, though. Didn’t tell me to toughen up. She simply took me to get shaved ice when I calmed down; said when you conquer your fear and come out on top, you should always treat yourself to something nice.
“It’s okay to be scared, [First],” she smiled softly. “Some people might say otherwise, but you know something, Auntie doesn’t think fear is a bad thing. Fear can be really good sometimes. Fear is what tells you not to do something that could lead to you getting hurt. It teaches you when not to do something stupid or dangerous. Sometimes, fear is what you should listen to instead of the ‘what if things actually go right’s. Fear only becomes bad when there’s too much of it. When you let being scared rule your life so you don’t live it.
“So it’s okay to be scared. Just promise auntie that you won’t let fear stop you from moving forward. Whether it’s rejection, worries a leap of faith will lead to you falling completely on your ass or that it might not be okay to say something when you know you should.
Live like you feel it and love like you mean it.
Don’t let the fear get to you.”
It took about a week before I was diving right back into the deep blue all over again.
Name: [Full Name] ♀ D/O/B: December 9, 1989 Age: 15
Sorcerer Lineage: Non-sorcerer lineage Enrollment method: Scouted
Recruiter: Yaga Masamichi
Notes: Student was encountered May 5, 2005
Testimony of the recruiter: At the site of Tsubame High School’s test of courage, a second grade curse appeared. [Last] activated her innate technique to protect herself and her fellow students and was able to keep the curse at a standstill until sorcerers arrived on the scene to exorcize the curse. While there were students injured, none of the injuries were fatal mostly due to [Last]’s quick application of her ability. According to the student, she began being able to utilize her innate technique around the age of 10.
Jujutsu
Student’s Innate Technique: Shields
Rejection” Student’s abilities manifest as her cursed energy condensing into an object that rejects negative events outside of it effectively, creating shields of various sizes. This ability is one that is purely defensive and does not seem to have any offensive capabilities. As it stands, should the student make timely progress during the initial stages of her enrollment during this first year ー should she not disenroll or meet an untimely end ー it isn’t recommended to give her solo assignments.
Notes: “Rejection” is what the student in question chooses to refer to this ability as.
Interview Question Answer: “Why I want to enroll? Because I’m scared of this curse stuff.”

the thing I am most sad about your podcasting hiatus is not getting any new random book/fic/media recommendations from y’all!! I mean I’m still working through what you’ve already recommended. but it’s not the same
anon, this is ALSO a thing I dearly miss about the podcast! okay, let's do some recs from the absolutely enormous amount of books I've read recently. gonna keep this list to the first ones that come to mind from the last few months or we'd be here for hours:
nightbitch by rachel yolen - this is uhhhh semi-horror litfic about a new mother who believes she's turning into a dog. it's furious and brilliant and bloody and deeply weird and I fucking loved it. (though I WILL say: content warning for the violent death of a pet.)
the half life of valery k by natasha pulley - a soviet nuclear physicist in the 1960s is sent to work in a strange town that is also a radiation experiment. unlike her other books this one isn't speculative, but it's emotionally and character-wise one of the best (THE ROMANCE!! ugh) and the historical detail is fascinating.
heartburn by nora ephron - a short & hilarious novel about a food writer who discovers her husband is having an affair when she is seven months pregnant. did you know nora ephron is a genius?? I feel like I'm the last person to discover this fact. this would make a fantastic double feature with nightbitch, actually.
starling house by alix e. harrow - I KNOW I KNOW it's not out until halloween 2023 but listen: this book changed my life. an absolutely superb contemporary southern gothic horror romance (just go with it) about poverty and hidden sins and a girl going to work in a creepy house. preorder it now, and while you wait, read summer sons by lee mandelo.
the spare man by mary robinette kowal - a smart and slick sci-fi take on the noir detective novel, starring a wonderful heiress engineer with chronic back pain who has to solve a murder on a spaceship after someone frames her new husband. also has SO many cocktail recipes in it, which I feel more books should adopt.
cuckoo song by frances hardinge - nobody can write creepy fantasy like hardinge, and I think this is her creepiest. it has some amazing magical worldbuilding on the grim side of whimsical, and very fraught siblings, and it will turn your mind subtly inside out. technically...middle grade, I guess? whatever. read it.
I kissed shara wheeler by casey mcquiston - yes! finally! I had been putting this one off because I'm just Not A YA Reader generally, but had a great time with it. both very scathing and very kind about a specific christian high school experience in the american south, and full of queer defiance and joy.
and finally, I've also been slowly rereading the vorkosigan saga by lois mcmaster bujold, which is tied with the discworld for my favourite series of all time. nobody can combine adventure and devastating character like bujold.

Whispers In The City Of Dreams (Alejandro Balde.)
Summary: In Barcelona, Alejandro, a footballer, meets Y/N, an artist. They explore the city's landmarks, fall in love, and enjoy a romantic sunset boat ride.
In the heart of Barcelona, where the pulse of history intertwined with the rhythm of modernity, Alejandro Balde found himself strolling down the bustling Rambla de Catalunya one bright summer morning.
As a promising young footballer for FC Barcelona, Alejandro often found solace in the city's vibrant streets and hidden corners, away from the demands of the pitch.
On this particular day, fate intervened in the form of Y/N, an aspiring artist with a penchant for capturing the essence of Barcelona's soul in her paintings.
Y/N, lost in admiration of the intricate architecture lining the boulevard, nearly collided with Alejandro as he rounded a corner.
"¡Perdón! (Sorry)" Alejandro exclaimed, steadying Y/N with a gentle hand on her arm.
Y/N looked up, her eyes widening in surprise at the sight of Alejandro, whose name she had heard echoing through the city's football fervor.
"No, I'm sorry," Y/N replied with a warm smile.
"I was lost in the beauty of this city."
Alejandro chuckled softly, his dark eyes sparkling with amusement.
"It has that effect on people. Are you a local artist?"
"Yes," Y/N nodded, feeling a flutter of excitement at Alejandro's genuine interest.
"I paint scenes of Barcelona-its streets, its parks, its hidden corners that speak of its rich history."
Their conversation flowed effortlessly as they walked together, sharing stories of their favorite spots in the city.
Alejandro revealed his love for the tranquil oasis of Park Güell, while Y/N described the inspiration she drew from the whimsical details of Casa Batlló.
As days turned into weeks, Alejandro and Y/N explored Barcelona hand in hand, their romance blossoming amidst the city's iconic landmarks and hidden gems.
They shared stolen kisses under the shade of La Sagrada Família's towering spires, danced to the melodies of street musicians in the Gothic Quarter's labyrinthine alleys, and lingered over cups of rich Spanish coffee in cozy cafés overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
One evening, Alejandro surprised Y/N with a sunset boat ride along Port Vell. They sailed past the shimmering lights of the city skyline, the sea breeze carrying whispers of promises and dreams yet to unfold.
"Barcelona is more beautiful with you in it," Alejandro murmured, his voice soft yet filled with sincerity.
Y/N leaned into his embrace, her heart overflowing with love for this city and for the man who had become her muse.
"And you, Alejandro, have painted colors in my life that I never knew existed."
Their love story became intertwined with Barcelona's tapestry, each moment etched with laughter, passion, and a shared appreciation for the city's enchanting allure.
From the heights of Montjuïc Castle to the quiet charm of Barri Gòtic, Alejandro and Y/N discovered that in the City of Dreams, every corner held the promise of a new adventure and a deeper connection.
As the sun set over the horizon, casting a golden glow over the city they both cherished, Alejandro and Y/N knew that their love was a masterpiece unfolding-one brushstroke at a time-in the timeless canvas of Barcelona.
In the amidst whispers of love and the echo of their footsteps in the cobblestone streets,
Alejandro and Y/N embraced the magic of their whirlwind romance in the City of Dreams.

The place is packed. Crowded to its full capacity. The music’s too loud, the floors almost bumping to the beat of every compass. And Levi thinks, sure enough, he’s too sober to do this right now. That he, most definitely, isn’t one for weddings.
Even if it’s Erwin’s.
He huffs and chugs over the last of his champagne glass. It’s a sweet haze that lingers on his tongue. A bubbly daydream that makes him stare at the scene with softer eyes, if only for a brief moment.
He had told Erwin that he should have gone for something more intimate, that one night when he asked for opinions. That he should have rented the small chapel by the beach, and invite a few of his closer friends only. He had never been that of a pretentious man to begin with. And Mike preferred keeping things low-profile, anyways.
So, what was the need for all of this big fuzz?
He looks over at his friends, shaking it off in the middle of the dancefloor. It’s a nice venue they’ve rented: that, he has to admit. There are fairy lights hanging from the tree branches, and everything else is covered in delicate, white décor. It reminds him a bit of Christmas, he tells himself: how joy is palpable in the air. How it seems, somehow, that the breeze smells of tender hoping.
He puts the glass on the table, and rests an arm on the back of his chair. He has been sitting for a while already, all-too abstracted from the rest of the party. It's no surprise, he had always preferred to be a silent witness, after all. Someone who rather enjoys from the peripheries. It’s the reason why he’s chosen Architecture, he figures. Why he’d followed Erwin to open up their own studio in the first place. To look at the fuller landscape. To contemplate at the maimed beauty that one can only taste from the distance.
He hums, content. In front of him, Mike, Moblit and Nana are already tipsy, slurring out a very drunken chorus to the song that’s playing. It’s a sight that’s so warm with gentleness, he’s afraid he’ll tarnish it if he stares any longer. Mike puts his arms around both his friends, and he finds himself smiling, all of a sudden. It’s in the way blush glazes over their cheeks. The rush of wonder that flashes through their bodies as they dance.
Yep. He’s certainly too sober for this.
He tends to the bottle and pours himself another glass. The night is young, still: the weather damp and fresh, typical of an august spent in Paradis. He remembers long-lost summers like this, where Hanji took him to the base of the same cliff they’re at now. They would crash at his house uninvited, sneak over the fence of his backyard. And he’d jump off his window and run for the hills, too bold to ever look back.
He guesses, he misses it all a little bit. The reckless laughter, how Hanji would teach him about a different star every time. He has the feeling that the world was a much more interesting place when they were a constant to it. That now that they’re in Marley, even the moon has stopped to shine, as well.
He takes a sip. Champagne drowns out the echo of his thoughts for a second, soothes out the tinge of nostalgia that tugs at his chest. Hanji is dancing in front of him, too. And he can’t help but seek for them in the crowd, like when they were little kids figuring out life.
There’s something about the way they move, really. A whimsical magic that pulls him into them, brighter than a thousand sunsets. Maybe, it’s that they haven’t seen each other in three months, he wants to believe. Or maybe, it’s their hair: how it’s loose and wild and free, beautifully tousled by the drumming of the music.
Has he ever told them how pretty he’s always drawn them?
He shakes his head, takes every corner of them in. Their suit is slightly wrinkled from all the dancing, their face flushed a faint tone of peach. They make him dream of dawn over the ocean, how untamable they are. Make him think of going on adventures and getting fake tattoos.
"Why don't you dance with them?", Erwin talks from behind, sitting down next to him. He’s wearing head-to-toe white: a rose clipped to the flap of his tux.
Levi grunts. He has no idea how does he know that he’d been staring. Or for how long. But then again, this is typical of his best friend to do.
"I don't dance.", he says, plain and simple. And that much, is true. “Besides,”, he adds, as he lifts up the glass once more. “Shouldn’t you be concerned about other stuff? It’s your wedding.”
Erwin lets out a light chuckle.
"Precisely.”, he deadpans, then. “You and Hanji are my best-men tonight. I’ve noticed how you’ve been looking at them, Levi..."
That earns him only but another grunt.
Of course, the bastard had had to pick upon it.
"I'm not looking at them in any particular way.", he lies.
Erwin raises a brow. Out on the floor, Hanji spins to the rhythm of a melody that’s born anew, so faded that they’re barely aware of the universe. And Levi’s eyes are glued upon them, still, staring with a love so burning, it seems as though a comet has just crashed onto the shores.
Did he really think he wasn’t being obvious? That he could get away with fooling his life-long companion like that?
"You wanna know how I know...?", he starts, after what appears a long minute of silence. His voice has become lower all too quickly. Almost as if he’s setting free of his heart’s best kept secret. "I know because that's the exact same way I look at Mike."
Levi holds in his breath, stays quiet for a moment. He thinks of the night Hanji had showed him the constellations up the skies, right before leaving off abroad. They had told him, that every star belonged to another. That they were all threaded together, connected somehow. He had supposed it was a little stupid, back then. Science was something far beyond his field of comprehension.
Still, Hanji had persisted, he recalls, stubborn as they were. They had taken his hand into theirs, pointed them up at the ignites of a flickering planet.
“Look…”, they’d said, in a whisper drowned out by moonlight. “You and I… are like the stars, Levi…”
He didn't understand.
“Like the stars?”
Hanji had nodded, then glared up at him a second too long.
“You know…?”, they hushed. Their voice smelt of spring, and of the cheap wine they’d bought from the store. “No matter how far we stray, we’ll always be linked close, side by side…”
He swallows, and stares over at them once more now. Their slender figure, the smile that hints at the corner of their lips. They are putting up a spectacle for one without even realizing. A show that names them the owner of every light upon his skyline.
Because his pulse has raised too obnoxiously loud, almost audible above the music. And he's sure, right there, as he watches them move, that his childhood's best friend has screwed him over.
That his soul will always be tied to the brightest star that could be up the cosmos.
“What do I do now…?”, he asks, more to himself that to anyone else.
Erwin places a hand on his shoulder, gives him a tight, reassuring squeeze.
“Just be yourself.”, he concludes, as he gets up to join Mike back on the dancefloor. “That should be enough.”
.
.
He's two more champagne glasses down when he bumps into Hanji by the dessert table. Still, he's too sober to be making this much of a ridicule act.
"'Wassup!", they exclaim, as they turn around to face him. And they notice, almost immediately: he appears all too serious. Like he's just been invited to a funeral. "Everything alright?", they ask, concerned. "You look... constipated."
Levi bites his tongue. He seriously wants the Earth to swallow him whole.
"Well...", he begins. He can feel his skin turn to an aching shade of red. "Ewin's been telling me not to hold back my shit anymore, so..."
He instantly face-palms himself. Hold back his shit? What is he even talking about? He is too nervous and not making any sense right now.
Hanji laughs, and it's like time has never ran between them, really. Like they are still the same children who chased after fireflies and built up tents with their bed covers. Truth is, they had missed Levi, too. His permanent scowl and his endless battle with words. His perfectly parted hair, and the softness that lies within his eyes.
They take the rose that hangs from his suit, then put it in between black locks, there in the tender spot behind his ear. After all, they have a silent agreement to their friendship, old as the day they met. He allows them into the parts of him that hurt, and they are careful not to talk about them.
"So...", they say. Their hand is still on his face, lingering on the sides of it a minute too long. They have no idea what it means, but it's a gesture so intimate, Levi doesn't dare move. "Lets go dancing! Shall we...?"
He smiles. Up the skies, stars dapple in the dark canvas of the night, glimmer like distant raindrops on pitch black. He recognizes, they are all stitched together into the glints of a million different constellations. That no dot is left untouched. And he thinks, maybe, that Hanji was probably right.
All along. All this time.
They have always been just alike.

December reading and reviews by Maia Kobabe
I post my reviews throughout the month on Storygraph and Goodreads, and do roundups here and on patreon.
The Savage Beard of She Dwarf by Kyle Latino
She Dwarf might be the last of her kind, but this only fuels her desire for adventure, danger, and travel. Her famous warrior mother died before she could lead She Dwarf though the final coming of age trials, so our hero is on a quest to find the lost kingdom of Dwarves to see what knowledge she can gain from the ruins. A long the way she battles and befriends a whimsical cast of misfits who end up tagging along for the journey for reasons of their own. This story is action packed, fun, beautifully drawn and extremely aesthetically queer though there are no outright discussions of anyone's gender or sexuality. I highly recommend this comic for fantasy comic fans of all ages, it was released during covid and never got the promotion or attention it deserved. Buy this book for someone for the holidays!
Under a Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire, read by Michelle Dockrey
This third book is the series is more whimsical and light than the first two, which I suppose makes sense as it takes place primarily in a nonsense world. It introduces a few new characters, as well as bringing back Christopher and Kane from book 1. A group of these teens sets out together on a quest, but not all of them return to Earth at the end of it. I'm definitely planning to continue with the audio books of this series.
Batcat by Meggie Ramm
This magical, brightly-colored tale follows Batcat, a creature of comfort, who is driven out of their cozy home by an annoyingly friendly ghost. On their quest, Batcat is forced to face some of their deepest fears (the dark, being eaten) and some of their biggest questions: are they more a bat, or more a cat? Readers of all ages who have wondered about their own place in a world keen on dividing things into categories will relate to this quandary, and delight in the playful ways that Batcat defines themself outside of the binary. I got to read an advanced copy of this adorable book because it was written by a dear friend. Yes, I am biased, but I loved this story and highly recommend people check it out when it is released in March of 2023, or preorder it now!
Funny Planet: How Comedy Ruined Everything by Ken Jennings
This is a conversational, light, easy to read nonfiction that traces the way comedy and humor have spread their roots into almost every aspect of American life. Advertisements are now expected to be funny, as are politicians, the news, the modern art world and some types of avant-garde fashion and food. Also, social media, particularly twitter, which (even in its crumbling perhaps final days) is a near constant stream of jokes and jibes at every current happening, large or small, including very horrific tragedies that probably shouldn't be made light of. And things that were already funny, like sitcoms, have nearly doubled their joke density in the past 50 years. The author explores the historical development of comedy in these different fields, and also wonders what it is doing to our brains to be fed such a constant stream of jokes. I missed a lot of the references by virtue of having seen almost none of the TV shows or comedy specials the author was referring to, yet still found this a quick and lively read.
¡Ay, Mija!: My Bilingual Summer in Mexico by Christine Suggs
Suggs' debut memoir is a complete delight. The themes of language, translation, family, queerness, fatness, and being biracial are beautifully woven together into a rich and authentic whole. Nothing is overstated, simply presented as it was lived, and illustrated in a lovely palette of warm browns, bright golds, and smoothing blues. I loved the tiny avatar of the author's internal thoughts and how it interacted with the text and images on the page. This book uses all of the visual tools of comics to tell a wonderful coming of age story and the result is as sweet as pan dulce. I had the chance to read this book ahead of it's review and I can't recommend it more! Pre-order it now or look for it on shelves in April 2023.
The Box In The Woods by Maureen Johnson read by Kate Rudd
This fourth book in the Truly Devious YA murder mystery series introduces a new cold case for anxious teen detective Stevie Bell to bang her head against. This one, a quadruple murder from 1978 which took place in the woods outside a summer camp, was mishandled from the beginning. Dubbed 'The Box in the Woods' murders, the police at the time initially thought it was a drug deal gone wrong, then thought it might be the work of a contemporary serial killer. Stevie is hired by the new owner of the summer camp, who wants to make a podcast about the crime. Stevie doesn't care about the podcast, but she does love getting to bring her friends with her to a camp and getting her hands on a difficult case. This book continues to develop Stevie's friendships and romantic relationship in satisfying ways. I remain very delighted by and impressed with this series, and I'm excited there's a fifth book coming out before the end of the year!
Buzzing by Samuel Sattin and Rye Hickman
]The power of a supportive role playing group can't fix everything, but it goes a long way. Isaac is a teen with OCD, who suffers from near constant intrusive thoughts, cleverly visualized here as bees with mean voices. Over the story he builds confidence and community by leaning into his love of fantasy and drawing; as a former fellow misfit teen artist, it was wonderful to watch him grow. This is a nuanced and diverse coming of age story, I'm so excited for all of the readers who will discover it and see themselves in it. The art is excellent, both in the real world day to day parts of the story and the D&D fantasy parts of the story. I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of this book because I am friends with both of the authors- pre order it now, or look for it on shelves in July 2023!
Falcon written and read by Helen Macdonald
This was my second book this year by Helen MacDonald. Shorter and more traditionally nonfiction that H is for Hawk, this book is a collection of facts and anecdotes about the relationship of falcons and humans across many centuries and cultures. Human have long anthropomorphized falcons, attributing to them traits such as nobility, cunning, and martial prowess. Humans have been training and hunting with falcons for at least 3,000 years; lately, we have driven many species to near extinction, and created involved and wide ranging programs to try and rehabilitate the dwindling populations. I listened to this entire four hour audiobook during one long car ride and was well entertained the whole time.
Mimosa by Archie Bongiovanni
Chris, Jo, Elise, and Alex bonded over being the only queer waiters at a restaurant, but their friendship long outlasted their stint at the job. Ten years on, the crew, now in their mid and late thirties, face a whole slew of new challenges: parenting, vying for promotions, balancing partying and work, being judged by baby gays at the club, and scariest of all, drifting apart. Fans of Bongiovanni's Grease Bats will enjoy the familiar flavors of a messy, horny, queer and trans friend squad but paired with a more nuanced slice-of-life narrative. These characters are trying to stay true to themselves, invest in their communities, get laid, and support each other. But it's not so easy to balance all of those conflicting needs, and they frequently fall short. I was left hoping that the characters could forgive each other's deeply human failings. I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of the book- it's available for pre-order now, or check it out when it's released in March 2023!
She Who Became The Sun by Shelley Parker Chan
What a wonderful book to end the year with! This one came highly recommended by many friends and did not disappoint. Epic in scale, with fantasy rooted in Chinese history, this story is set in an alternate mid-1300s with Mongols attempting to control all of mainland China, but resisted by a rebel force. The book opens with Zhu, the only daughter of a peasant family struggling to survive during a famine. A fortune teller predicted a great destiny for Zhu's one brother, and nothing for her. But when her brother dies, Zhu decides she will inhabit his destiny instead. She disguises herself as a boy to seek shelter and education in a monastery, a story trope I have always enjoyed, but especially here because this book takes the narrative in a explicitly trans/genderqueer direction by the end. Elsewhere in the story, a eunuch general in the Mongol army hides a bitter desire for revenge from his dearest friend; the rebel leaders battle each other for power, doing nearly as much damage to their cause as they do to their enemies; and a daughter of a rebel commander despairs over the constant bloodshed and death of the seemingly endless war. This is a complicated conflict, in which neither side is morally superior to the other; I was equally compelled by the personalities on each side and also certain that all of them were on a path towards destruction that they could not escape.

I didn't know you liked Peter Nimble!!! Have you read any more of Jonathan Auxier's work?
🍳☔️🍂 For whoever/however many you'd like!
I've read Sophie Quire and The Night Gardener! They're whimsical, and I love them!
A bit of backstory for my OC: Her name is Evelyn, she's a with of medicine and she met the adventuring trio (Sophie, Peter, and Sir Tode) when they were thirteen. They initially found her because they thought she could reverse Sir Tode's curse, but it turned out that her only "magic" was her knowledge of medical stuff that wasn't known in Sophie and Peter's time...because she was a nursing student from the twenty-first century (dun dun DUNN)
☔️: Do they like the rain?
Evelyn loves the rain, or at least she did until she was sent back in time through the Sandstorms of Time (why she was even in the early 1800s in the first place). Now, the rain could bring all sorts of deadly diseases and it would be the only way to get water (no rivers or other moving water where she is)
🍳: Can they cook?
Well, she doesn't really have a choice. She can cook, but if she gets back to her time, she will survive a whole month on instant meals and kraft mac and cheese. Notice the "if".
🍂: Favorite season?
She loved the winter when she was young, but summer soon took over to be her favorite season because that's when she was able to get the most herbs and medical supplies (and when the sandstorm appeared in front of her house and spits out random goods throughout time. The giant bottle of hand sanitizer was a literal lifesaver.)
Thank you for asking, I feel like you gave me a good grip on potentially telling her story one day! I tried to make her on picrew, so just imagine her with more scars and a long dress

I decided to write original fiction for the first time in ages and get inspiration for my characterizations of Vocaloid and UTAU
Vocaloid and UTAU have no canon personalities so any personalities I made for them are really much like having an OC. I decided to fully make them into OCs in the story
Anyway I just wrote an infodump about the story
If you’re a longtime follower of me you should remember some of the old OCs I’m featuring here
———Overview———
The story is inspired by the vivid dreams I have at night.
There is a wacky school where everything is surreal. Despite its whimsical magic atmosphere, it has many dangers and strict rules. Every day attending there is like a high-stakes adventure, or just plain strange.
The school is for people from the ages of 4 and 44. Groups are often divided by age.
The school is fun and wacky but also stressful and kinda awful. Life is never boring though. It’s just really crazy!
The school has an unfair hierarchy based on how many friends a student has. The more friends, the more perks. Outcasts? They get nothing.
The school lunch is cooked in a volcano, and the dishes have magical properties and very eccentric. Firework popcorn, anyone?
The classes cover all the bases. There there are even oddball classes such as “nap time,” where you get a failing grade if you can’t sleep that day!
Finally, if you miss the regular school bus to the dorm homes, you have to ride the Tragic School Bus, that takes “the long way home.” Chances are, you’ll be home past midnight.
Also, super-corrupt villains are totally not running the scenes the school and there’s TOTALLY NOT gonna be an arc where the students rebel against the school system. What makes you think that? :3
There’s more too but I just need to write lol
———Concept brainstorm———
Queen Rainbow is Queen of the whole School. (Don’t worry, she’s not a villain, she’s a student and she’s wonderful and eccentric and lovely)
The school is divided into 4 groups, named after the seasons. They are each ruled by monarchs named for the respective season. (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.)
Each group is kind of like a school team or a like… a DND class, but I have yet to think and elaborate. Perhaps it’s like, the group that scores the most “school points” the previous month gets perks for the next month, and the worst one gets penalties.
Also I just think the concept of “four character attribute options” or whatever is cool and I would hate comparisons to the HP books
There are also rivaling school idol groups just for drama and shiz
Each of the 4 groups has a different student council since I like Seitokaichou characters, I just need to decide who’s on the seitokai
School cliques. There will definitely be drama
———Characters and rationships——— (Not all are listed, because there are a lot planned. I plan on giving a lot of characters a spot in the limelight because this will be more like a franchise than a linear story or series…) (This also isn’t a bio list so I won’t be going into detail about their personalities here at least.) (Vocaloid and UTAU have no canon personalities so any personalities I made for them are really much like having an OC. I decided to fully make them into OCs here)
———Spring group——— (This group mostly has the first group of main characters, and Vocaloid expys)
Amelie Sugar- She’s me and y’all should know her
Sumi Shimizu- Based on Haku Yowane, specifically Clarith in Daughter of White. Is albino with white hair.
Sada Oyamada- Based on Neru Akita. She goes by Oya so her ship name with Sumi can be Oyasumi which means good night. Has blonde hair
Joy Smiley- OC turned UTAU. Has chestnut red hair
Soyi- Based on Utane Uta, but as an only child. Has black hair
Kiri Takamori- Based on Hatsune Miku, more specifically Michaela in Daughter of white. Has clover-green hair.
Kasumi Takamori- Kiri’s little sister based on Chibi Miku-san. Has darker clover-green hair
Haru Asaga- Old OC from 2012. One of my first. Originally from my first series Nichijou no Niji. Has rose red hair
Rosa- Sumi and Amelie’s daughter from the future. Don’t tell anyone. Has pale pink hair
Princess Spring (idk the royal titles could change)
———Summer group——— (This group mostly has a group of less-major but still important characters, and OCs I created back in 2015-2019)
Rhona Hydra- Formerly Rhona Aequor, I changed her last name. OC who is also an UTAU with my voice edited. Has blue hair
Nagisa Onda- Rhona’s gf, also UTAU with my voice edited. Has dark magenta hair
Luana Kai- Chaotic pirate girl OC. Also an UTAU. Has dark teal hair
Rie Hibine- From 2012’s Nichijou no Niji. May or may not also be an UTAU. Has spring green hair
Nina Rivera- Side character from Nichijou no Niji who got her spotlight in a story about a cruise I wrote in 2013
Natasha Evans III- One of Nina’s friends from her cruise, from the 2013 story. Likes to be called Kitty.
Sasha Oddison- One of Nina’s friends from her cruise, from the 2013 story
Mora Oddison- Sasha’s little sister.
Vivian Star- Originally a teammate of Joy Smiley’s in a story called Whimsy Quartet. Has yellow hair
Reisei Kiyone- That poet guy I created in 2015. He has a chronic illness. He was inspired by a dream I had when I fell asleep to Seiko-P (Vocaloid producer) music
Tamika Towa- Reisei’s best friend. Created in 2015. She and Reisei have become adults in my writing.
Sowon Moon- Reisei’s boyfriend… he is also kind of my male alter-ego. I kinda ship him with a lot of OCs too. I created him recently.
Princess Summer
———Autumn group———
(This group mostly has the second group of main characters, and UTAU expys)
Lanyue Fei- Based on Taya Soune. Has dark blue hair. His first name means blue moon in Chinese
Jihong Cha- Based on Ritsu Namine. Has scarlet hair. His first name means scarlet in Korean
Kanade Yozora- Based on Defota. Oldest sibling in Yozora family. Has cool lavender hair
Shigure Yozora- Based on Defosuke. Second oldest Yozora sibling. Has indigo hair
Arata Yozora- Based on Utane Uta/Defoko. Second-youngest Yozora sibling. Has dark purple hair
Kiwa- Based on Koe Utane. Youngest Yozora sibling. Has warm lilac hair
Emiri- Based on Momo Momone with a side of Yui from K-on. Has red hair.
Aimi- Emiri’s sister. Kinda based on Ui from K-on. Has magenta hair.
Yuiru- Based on Teto. Has pink hair
Seiya- Based on Ted with a bit of Momoraro vibe. Has pale pink hair.
Leimi- Based on Ruko. I’ll go into more detail because she honestly super cool. Kaoru’s outgoing younger sister. Has wild black hair with red and blue streaks. Loves mecha and those transparent sparkly machine and robot aeshetics. Loves Coke more than Pepsi. Kinda goth, kinda scene. Neon and rave aesthetic. Nightcore. Age 22.
Kaoru- Based on Rook. I’ll go into detail because he’s honeslty super cool. Leimi’s edgy older brother. Has wild black hair with green and purple streaks. Is a furry and likes sparkledogs. Loves Pepsi more than Coke. Kinda emo, kinda scene. Neon and rave aesthetic. Nightcore. Age 26.
Celia- A random character from a random Rainbow Week story who got promoted to a major character. A spooky banshee woman. Has periwinkle hair.
Noemi Kise- From Nichijou no Niji back in 2012
Maia Mei- another Whimsy Quartet girl created along with Joy
Nikamowin Takwakin- Celestine’s good friend. Originally named Alvarina, I decided to give her a name to reflect her Native Canadian roots. She was originally going to marry Celestine into royalty, but I realized it has racial connotations for a Native woman to marry into (white) royalty so she’s just going to be a friend to Celestine and possibly on the student council.
Princess Autumn
———Winter group———
(These OCs are mostly new with some exceptions (the exceptions mostly are the ones listed, and I don’t know what to do with this group yet.) (UPDATE: this group also features characters from my old first original work Whimsica Saga)
Margot Nocturne- The dramatic disaster monocle lady
Octavia Forte- Another dramatic monocle lady, but they’re genderfluid and not as much of a disaster
Aria Dolce- Octavia’s wife who is also dramatic. What’s with winter group and these people.
Sonata Coda- She wears a monocle but she’s just grumpy.
Setsuna Usui- The dramatic angsty girl from Nichijou no Niji. Had a ship subtext with Rie
Bonnie Lace- Dramatic and theatrical member of Whimsy Quartet. I guess winter is the dramatic season
Souko Okuda- From Whimsy Quartet. A timid genius
Momoka Misaki- Souko’s best friend who is gyaru (Japanese fashion subculture) and is cheerful and sweet
Bianca Luna- Main character from Whimsica Saga. That title makes me nostalgic. Did you know Whimsica saga was originally a Vocaloid fanfic and that Bianca replaced Yowane Haku?
Camille Rainer- From Whimsica Saga. Replaced Neru Akita
Candy Corn- From Whimsica Saga. Replaced Kaito
Pepper Corn- From Whimsica Saga. Replaced Akaito
Pop Corn- From Whimsica Saga. An extra sibling
Ruby- From Whimsica Saga. Replaced the role of Yukari Yuzuki
Kuma- From Whimsica Saga. Relaced Len Kagamine
Kuri- From Whimsica Saga. Replaced Rin Kagamine
Puma- From Whimsica Saga. Kuma’s older brother
Emi- From Whimsica Saga
Nova- From Whimsica Saga
Jay- From Whimsica Saga
Princess Winter
———Royal group——— (These are the “royal” students who don’t fit anywhere. Despite being royal and special and all that, I stilll want to make them feel normal. Also they generally don’t like their royal status much, and/or don’t feel it very much important, unless they are jerk)
Queen Rainbow
Stelle Shimmer
Lunette Shimmer
Celestine Shimmer
Simone
Jasmine
Jolene
Serena (became royalty due to being Celestine’s girlfriend)
Tally (Serena’a royal hand puppet. I mean she is literally a puppet.)
Harmony (Queen Rainbow is engaged to her)

Tabletoptober Day 28: Whimsical
Baculings
Steadfast strolled through the meadow, taking in the warm summer sun and the cool breeze. From the trees he heard a laugh, and caught the faintest glimpse of a leaf green child. A baculing was about. In front of him he noticed a strange pile of sticks, somewhat resembling a poorly made trap. His ankle struck it, and he tipped over, flailing his arms trying to keep his balance. Finally, gravity won the battle and Steadfast fell to the ground in a great sprawl (just as he had been taught in the circus). The laughter grew louder, and as he sat up from his (definitely not deliberate) tumble he saw the verdant child running up to him. He reached for his deck of cards: every kid loved magic tricks, right?
When you hear the playing of pipes and the laughter of children deep in the woods, look for the baculings. These merry spirits are the children of the trees, always playing games and celebrating, and they are a good sign that the forest is healthy. If one invites you to their games, do not be afraid to join them, for they hold no malice in their hearts. Baculing games are similar to those played by normal children, and some more adventurous youths have been known to befriend baculings and play with them frequently.
#tabletoptober#lighthearted piece about forest kids#I just watched princess mononoke and the little dudes are the inspiration for this

Jellies Shoes Revival: Nostalgic Footwear Making a Splash in Fashion
Fashion is a cyclical beast, known for its uncanny ability to resurrect styles from the past and present them in a modern light. One such blast from the past that has made a triumphant return to the forefront of footwear trends is none other than the iconic Jellies Shoes. These whimsical, translucent shoes, often associated with carefree summer days and playground adventures, have reemerged as a symbol of nostalgic fashion, capturing the hearts of fashion enthusiasts and trendsetters alike. Leading this revival is the brand Carmen Sol, which has breathed new life into the classic Jelly sandals, making them a staple in the wardrobes of individuals seeking both comfort and style.
Jelly Shoes, also known as Jellies, first burst onto the fashion scene in the 1980s, quickly gaining popularity for their vibrant colors, playful designs, and waterproof nature. Originally designed as beachwear, these jelly shoes soon found their way into everyday ensembles, becoming a beloved trend for people of all ages. The appeal lay not only in their quirky appearance but also in their adaptability – they could be worn to the beach, to a picnic, or even to a casual evening gathering. However, like many trends, their popularity waned as the decades progressed, giving way to more contemporary styles.
Fast forward to today, and Jelly Slides have found themselves at the heart of a fashion renaissance. Leading this revival is Carmen Sol, a brand that has taken the essence of these beloved shoes and reimagined them for the modern fashion landscape. Offering a wide range of styles, from Jelly Sandals to Jelly Boots, platform shoes, and even Jelly Wedges, Carmen Sol has seamlessly blended nostalgia with contemporary sensibilities..
The charm of Carmen Sol's Jelly Sandals lies not only in their aesthetic but also in their sustainable and eco-friendly approach. Crafted from high-quality, non-toxic PVC, these shoes are not only durable but also recyclable – a nod to the growing demand for fashion that treads lightly on the environment. This combination of style, sustainability, and comfort has struck a chord with fashion-conscious consumers who are seeking footwear that aligns with their values.
One of the defining features of Carmen Sol's Jelly Wedges is their versatility. While their predecessors were predominantly associated with casual wear, the modern Jelly Shoes can effortlessly transition from day to night. Pair them with a flowy sundress for a chic daytime look or match them with tailored trousers and a blouse for a stylish evening ensemble. The transparent nature of the shoes adds an element of intrigue, allowing wearers to experiment with bold and colorful socks or embrace the minimalist trend by showcasing their bare feet.
Social media has played a significant role in propelling the Jelly Shoes revival. Influencers and fashion enthusiasts have taken to platforms like Instagram and TikTok to showcase their innovative ways of styling these iconic shoes. The hashtag #JellyShoes has become a virtual runway, where people share their unique interpretations of this classic trend, further fueling its resurgence.
In conclusion, the revival of Jelly Shoes by Carmen Sol stands as a testament to fashion's ability to breathe new life into beloved classics. These whimsical, translucent shoes have transcended generations, capturing the imagination of those who remember their heyday and introducing their magic to a new audience. With a focus on sustainability, style, and versatility, Carmen Sol has successfully reinvented Jelly Shoes, ensuring that they remain a cherished piece of fashion history while also carving a place for themselves in the modern world. So, whether you're strolling along the beach or striding through city streets, slip into a pair of Jelly Shoes and let your feet do the talking, one translucent step at a time.
