What Color Goes with Gray Kitchen Cabinets?
Tumblr media
Gray kitchen cabinets have surged in popularity, becoming a staple in modern home design. Their versatility allows them to blend seamlessly with various color palettes, but selecting the right complementary colors can elevate your kitchen from ordinary to extraordinary. In this guide, we’ll explore the best colors to pair with gray cabinets, helping you create a stunning and harmonious kitchen space.
Understanding Gray: Shades and Undertones
Before diving into color choices, it’s essential to understand the different shades of gray. Gray can be categorized into two main types: cool grays with blue or green undertones and warm grays that lean towards beige or brown. Recognizing these undertones will help you select complementary colors that enhance your kitchen's overall aesthetic.
Top Color Choices for Gray Kitchen Cabinets
1. Soft Neutrals
Soft neutrals such as white, beige, and taupe are classic choices that create a calm and inviting atmosphere. These colors allow gray cabinets to shine while providing a timeless look.
Benefits: Soft neutrals make spaces feel larger and brighter, providing a serene backdrop for your gray cabinets. They work beautifully in both contemporary and traditional designs.
2. Bold Colors
For those looking to make a statement, bold colors like navy blue, forest green, and deep red can add drama and character to your kitchen. These colors contrast beautifully with gray, creating a striking visual effect.
Impact: Bold colors can draw the eye and serve as focal points in your kitchen design, making them ideal for accent walls or statement decor.
3. Pastels
Pastel shades, such as soft pink, mint green, and light lavender, can create a light and airy feel in your kitchen. These colors complement gray cabinets without overpowering them.
Mood: Pastels evoke a sense of freshness and playfulness, perfect for a cheerful kitchen environment.
4. Earth Tones
Incorporating earth tones like browns, terracotta, and muted greens connects your kitchen to natural elements. These colors add warmth and depth, making your gray cabinets feel more grounded.
Style: Earth tones work well in rustic or farmhouse-style kitchens, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Textures and Finishes
When selecting colors, consider the textures and finishes of your cabinets and other kitchen elements. Different finishes—such as matte, satin, or glossy—can influence how colors appear in your space. For example, a glossy gray cabinet may reflect light differently than a matte one, impacting how complementary colors are perceived.
Tip: When pairing colors, choose finishes that enhance each other, such as a matte wall paint against glossy cabinets for contrast.
Creating a Cohesive Look
To achieve a cohesive kitchen design, ensure that your color choices are reflected across cabinetry, countertops, and backsplashes. This approach creates harmony in your space.
Example: If you opt for navy blue walls, consider adding navy accents in your decor, such as bar stools or dishware, to tie the look together.
Real-Life Examples and Case Studies
Inspiration can often be found in real-life applications. Here are a few kitchens that beautifully incorporate gray cabinets with various color pairings:
Modern Minimalist: A kitchen featuring cool gray cabinets paired with white walls and a sleek black countertop creates a chic, contemporary look.
Cozy Rustic: Gray cabinets alongside warm beige walls and wooden accents produce a warm and inviting ambiance perfect for family gatherings.
Bright and Playful: Soft gray cabinets combined with pastel pink walls and cheerful decor elements create a whimsical and light-hearted kitchen space.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Should kitchen cabinets be darker or lighter than walls?
The choice between darker or lighter kitchen cabinets compared to walls largely depends on the desired aesthetic and the overall size of the space. Lighter cabinets can make a kitchen feel more open and airy, especially in smaller areas, while darker cabinets can add depth and richness, creating a cozy atmosphere. For a balanced look, many homeowners opt for a contrast, with lighter walls complementing darker cabinets or vice versa. Ultimately, it’s essential to consider the room’s lighting and your personal style when making this decision.
2. What color flooring looks best with grey cabinets?
When pairing flooring with gray cabinets, a variety of options can enhance the overall design. Light wood or whitewashed floors create a fresh, contemporary look, while darker woods can add warmth and richness, offering a beautiful contrast to the cool tones of gray. Additionally, tiles in warm beige or soft taupe can harmonize well with gray cabinets, bringing a touch of elegance to the space. Ultimately, the best flooring color will depend on the specific shade of gray and the overall aesthetic you want to achieve.
3. Do black countertops go with gray cabinets?
Yes, black countertops can be an excellent match for gray cabinets, creating a striking and sophisticated look. The combination adds depth and contrast, making both the cabinets and countertops stand out. This pairing works particularly well in modern or industrial-style kitchens, where sleek, bold designs are favored. To soften the look, consider incorporating warm accents, such as wooden elements or colorful decor, which can create a more balanced and inviting atmosphere.
Conclusion
Choosing the right colors to pair with gray kitchen cabinets can significantly impact the look and feel of your space. By understanding the various shades of gray and their complementary colors, you can create a harmonious kitchen that reflects your style. Whether you prefer soft neutrals, bold hues, or playful pastels, there’s a perfect color palette for your gray cabinets waiting to be discovered.

so it’s the fourth anniversary of me and @squishybellies bein gorlfs so!!!! i made her another fanfic of our kins being gay >:3c
Bedsheets fly off the Pyro's body as they wake with a start, lenses wide and breath hitched as they realized something - something so important that it woke them from an otherwise deep slumber, something that their mind had to address right now.
Despite dating (and now living with) their companion, Westley, for years, not even once had they been able to see him eat.
He has to have a mouth, right? Every living organism needs some kind of sustenance, and they assume his physiology is more like the animals they see every day in between the gory battles against the BLU team (they could never figure out why there's another Pyro there, they thought they were the only one of their kind!) than plants or microbes. So where is his mouth if his entire head is seemingly a giant eyeball? Sure, they could ask Medic about something like that, but one: he'd likely brush off the idea of an alien even existing, not to mention living in RED headquarters out of sight from the rest of the mercenaries, and two: if he didn't consider the idea to be nothing more than the silly fantasy of the team's strange, masked pyrotechnician, then he would definitely capture the poor Watchdog and slice him up to see what the anatomy of an alien is really like - alive, too.
Their flesh, akin to rubber in texture and elasticity but more like human skin in chemical structure, shrivels in abject horror at the thought, and they shake their mask-like head in an attempt to distract themselves with the question in hand. If we're going off the reasonable assumption that Westley does have a mouth, then where would it be? It can't be on his eye, they can't really comprehend how that would work, so it has to be somewhere else on his body. Maybe somewhere else besides his head, since that seems to only have room for his eye in the first place? That has to be it.
Tomorrow, they're going to put their little hypothesis to the test.
----------
"You made all of this... for me-?"
"Mrrhm!"
A proverbial feast is laid out before the tiny Watchdog's eye: golden-brown rolls of buttery bread accompany a pot of rich beef stew, complete with celery and carrots among other vegetables, and just a pinch of parsley to give it that earthy aftertaste (Pyro has known for a while now that stews and soups are Westley's favorite food, so it only makes sense to spoil him with it during their little experiment; he does deserve such a treat, after all!); each and every plate and bowl containing the table's worth of food almost shines in the afternoon light, ceramic handstakingly painted with delicate swirls of pinks and blues among realistic depictions of flowers such as roses and violets alongside a leaf or two, and the silvery flatware completing the dishware set is carved with flowery images to match (they made sure to at least try and arrange the silverware in a manner resembling the figures shown in that old etiquette book they found in Spy's library of the fine arts, but they could never find a soup spoon or a salad knife, so they had to make do with what was available).
And for dessert? An entire batch of peach cookies, and they even resemble their fruity counterparts! In the center of each one is a dollop of rich Italian cream gluing the halves together, and a few mint leaves are placed between the very top of the crease for a whimsical garnish. There's easily about twenty of them, each about the size of the average chocolate-chip cookie. Yes, Pyro is a bit of a cook, despite the sheer ruthlessness of their kills in battle - they find the act of making tasty dishes to be quite therapeutic, honestly, and when it comes to baking pastries or making candies they're even more enthused. All the intricacies of how every ingredient works together to make something truly decadent, the recipe's instructions serving as the backbone for the entire process, the creativity of finding new ways to use both old and new ingredients to spice up a tried and true recipe, harvesting the fruits of their labor by either tasting it themselves or sharing it with the other mercenaries...
Oh, they're zoning out again, and Westley seems a bit eager for something besides the two awkwardly staring off into space to happen.
Pyro quickly shakes their head with a slight mumble, giving the alien a wave with one of their glove-like hands in a display of sheepish apology. Not that such a gesture is needed, he's aware of how Pyro tends to become lost in their own thoughts occasionally. Honestly? It's kind of cute.
The living suit gently pushes his chair closer to the table for him to reach the food resting on top of it - the two had to find a few books to elevate him high enough - and offers the platter of freshly-baked bread rolls before pouring out a hearty portion of stew with a prideful "Hrah-dah!"
"Mrah burmf phrew! Huddah harrof, mrehery, horfom, hurrdamof, mrabbahs, hammah bims ah barsee!"
"Ooh, really? Sounds good - but, well, this is an awful lot, but then again I am really hungry..."
The spoon is comically large in his crimson-gloved hand, and he has to fiddle with it a bit before getting a good enough grip to take a scoop of the dish; already he can smell the earthy tones of parsley and potato, and he ends up needing to remind himself to blow on the spoonful before raising it to his head...
... And bringing it right into his eyeball.
Pyro is just barely able to hold in a gasp at the sight - THAT is his mouth?! How does he see?! Already their hypothesis has been blown out of the water, and just as quickly as it was snuffed out like a candle it has been replaced with even more questions. They watch in awe as their love takes another spoonful, followed by another and another, and soon he's tilting the bowl to slurp it up with fervent delight! Normally they'd be delighted at the obvious success of their cooking, but the curiosity swimming through their head about Watchdog anatomy has pushed that thought to the back of their goop-filled head.
"Man, that was good! Mind if I have some more, dear?"
The sight of Pyro excitedly bringing the entire pot over for Westley to indulge in makes him nearly jump out of his seat; if he didn't know any better, he'd say the fire-obsessed creature had a hint of a pinkish-black blush along their cheeks!
"Oh! Well, there's nothing wrong with a little splurging here and there...~"
With that, he starts to work away at the batch of stew, taking a bread roll and dipping it in the rich, flavorful broth here and there and nibbling on the resulting treat. It all tastes so good that he barely notices his stomach gurgling as he reaches for his fourth bowl, subconsciously taking his free hand to rub at the somewhat swollen organ; his body is working on autopilot now, mind absolutely entranced by the deliciousness of the meal and using all of its energy to consume more and more in greedy bliss.
After what feels like an eternity (to Pyro, at least), the pot is emptied, and every single roll is packed away in the Watchdog's belly along with nearly eight bowl's worth of soup. He pauses, leaning back in his oversized chair and exposing his round gut for the world to see: it sticks out about three inches from his body, and judging by its turgid appearance it's quite well-fed. Pyro can't help themselves from running a finger along its curved surface, eliciting a tender sigh from the stuffed extraterrestrial as he leans into their touch, eye half-lidded in sleepy delight at the massage.
"M-Mmf, right there, hahh...~"
Goodness, he looks adorable like this! And while Pyro knew Westley had an appetite larger than his small stature, they had no idea he could pack away that much in one sitting!
Hmm... maybe they can see just how much more he can eat. For science, of course.
----------
He can smell it when the very first cookie is offered up: a rich, sweet aroma like that of ripe peaches combined with the scents of sugary cream and fresh mint, and the surprisingly attractive combination is enough for the Watchdog's salivary glands to start up again, even after such a heavy meal beforehand. The pastry is greedily snatched up, and he takes his first bite moments later...
... And at once his tastebuds are hit with a sugar cookie's warm embrace alongside the richness of buttery cream and the refreshing coolness of mint, with aromatic and juicy peach serving as the bow that wraps together such a little gift.
His eye widens, and for a moment he no longer is hiding away in the somewhat dilapidated barn serving as RED's base, but in his own world of absolute, flavorful indulgence.
"... This is amazing."
He can't even bring himself to whoop in joy at how it all tastes, the experience of tasting the cookie simply leaves him too awed and immersed in it all - and Pyro is more than delighted at the feedback they've received, no matter how little; here, Westley's silence speaks volumes about his views on the little treat. They have to restrain themselves from causing a scene with raucous laughter and potentially catching the attention of the others, yet their emotions of intense joy leave their body to resort to flapping their arms while giving a soft giggle as they gaze at their companion lovingly.
They're so cute when they do that...
... Oh, the cookie's gone already.
Not wanting to miss out on the wondrous dessert while a plate of it still rests right in front of him, the alien proceeds to take a handful of peach cookies, popping a couple of them into his mouth in an attempt to make a compromise between his desire to savor the taste or stuffing as much of them into his eye-mouth as he can without so much as a single pause for flavor out of pure gluttony. Once more, he has to keep himself from chewing fast to refill his mouthful, letting the varied tastes rest on his metaphorical tongue for at least a minute before swallowing his bite. Pyro watches all the while, enamoured with the sight of Westley somehow being able to make room for what they can only assume is another amount of calories equal to, if not greater than the amount he previously ingested with the stew and bread!
Each handful devoured adds to the alien's already bloated middle, which slowly inches forward into his lap as he makes dents in the plate of cookies piled high before him; he has to pause here and there to give his belly a good rub, making room in its already packed insides for even more. It gurgles in mild protest, of course, but those soon fade away with the application of warmth and pressure aiding to digest what he's already consumed. Besides, the sensation of massaging his full stomach feels nice - it's actually quite relaxing! That, and he thinks it's cute how the suit-like assassin watching him develops an even stronger blush with each rubbing session.
Halfway through, and his lap only has a few inches of room left before being swallowed up by engorged stomach-flesh; Westley's breathing has slowed due to the weight of his stomach pressing into his lungs, but it's not enough for him to be in any sort of danger - it's only dropped to his sleeping rate, maybe one or two breaths above it. The little discomfort he feels is concentrated in how his dinner rests in his stomach like a boulder, weighing him down further and further as the remaining batch decreases to a quarter of its size, then a sixth, an eighth, until none are left - and by then Westley swears he can hear the chair creaking under his weight.
"Mmngh... urp-"
Did they push him too far? He's clearly in discomfort, and the concept of Pyro inadvertently harming their love as a result of their own curiosity causes their limbs to grow ice cold and their stomach to curdle. Rushing to his side, they begin to add to the rubbing, whimpering and practically sobbing the entire time before Westley places a crimson glove on their own.
"I'm fine, honey! Just... maybe overdid it a bit, hehehic-!"
Oh, thank goodness. The abomination nearly melts onto the floor as they go limp with relief, but is quick to resume the aftercare once their emotions return to normal. Their love's stomach is taut and almost spherical; they can feel it churning away several pounds of food underneath their clawed fingertips - it's honestly a fascinating sensation. Pyro coos in a mix of wonder and affection, leaning over to nuzzle the Watchdog's overtaxed midsection with the snout of their face as a low, gargling purr rises in their throat.
"Aw, you really like it when I'm all full like this, huh? Guess we should do this more often, then.~"
They consider the experiment a success.

Creative Design in Glass Cabinets
Instead of hiding everything behind solid cabinet fronts, try incorporating glass cabinet doors to allow you to show off your favorite dishes or decor. Maybe you have a collection of glassware that speaks to your personal tastes, which is perfect to highlight behind glass cabinet doors.
Glass kitchen cabinets on top paired with solid lower cabinet doors creates a beautiful contrast that can be achieved using a range of door styles. You can even use two-tone cabinets for additional distinction and to break up a monochromatic feel that just may not be your style.
Mullion glass, leaded glass and textured glass all offer a variety of options from contemporary to traditional. If you have a unique or specific idea in-mind, consider custom glass cabinets.
Form Meets Function with Open Shelving
Standard wall mounted cabinets above your kitchen counter doesn't have to be the automatic choice. Open shelves above countertops and prep spaces have benefits that go beyond great looks. Glassware and dishware used-daily can be quick to reach and accessible without the added step of opening a cabinet door. It may seem like small step to eliminate, but in today’s busy world, you may appreciate a few extra seconds every time you reach for plates and bowls. But, open shelves are not only for utilitarian purposes. They can also be used to display art and decorative accents in the form of a treasured collectible or two, framed black and white photographs, your inherited family cookbooks or small whimsical sculptures and pottery pieces. The shelves themselves can be considered an artistic element in your overall kitchen design. You can keep it simple and streamlined, or get creative with different finishes including high gloss, industrial or maybe a unique color to make your new kitchen really feel like yours.
Customized Storage Solutions
Cabinet storage solutions also create unique features in your kitchen that can help you stay organized too! Think cookware and utensil bin base organizers, roll-out drawers, drawer peg systems, K-Cup tray inserts, Lazy Susans, tip-out trays and soft-close waste bins. Don’t underestimate how the power of a high-performing kitchen can positively affect your daily quality-of-life.
Wine Storage for Connoisseurs
Whether you're a connoisseur or an avid enthusiast, wine storage may be something you’d like to incorporate into your kitchen for dinner parties and family gatherings alike. There are numerous ways to efficiently store wine in your new kitchen, and it all comes down to your personal preferences.

FFF: Manic Pixie Dream
“Leia, what the fuck.”
Emily was not amused with her roommate/best friend/horrible person. She had warned her when they moved in to keep her stupid schemes out of her way because Emily had to watch kindergarteners for a living and coming home to kindergarten behavior wasn’t fun. Leia had just laughed, which Emily foolishly took as a yes.
Taking in the sight of her apartment, that was a mistake. It seemed that Leia had dug into the very back of her storage unit and unloaded it into their living space. An ancient piano, a bicycle she had never seen Leia ride, and every color and pattern of dishware strewn about. A record player was precariously balanced where their TV usually sat (where was their TV?) and was playing some vague meandering jazz music. And, because her roommate was actually a kindergartener, everything was draped in fairy lights and swaths of cloth and... was that paint on the couch?
“Leia, what fresh hell are you up to now?” Emily yelled into the bedroom, where she could hear her so-called friend shuffling around.
“Coming,” Leia sang. Emily, who was already mentally chronicling a list of obscenities to use, braced herself for Leia’s entrance. It wasn’t enough, because the list was abandoned the moment she pranced in. “How was your day?” Emily could hear the smirk in her voice. Asshole.
“Your hair is blue,” was all that Emily could choke out. And it was true, Leia’s hair was freshly dyed headache-inducing blue. Emily supposed it was so she could match her sundress, which was half-spray painted the same shade. Paired with her borderline tacky pastel eyeshadow, Doc Martens, and what seemed like every piece of jewelry she owned, Leia looked like she invented a new style. Person-Who-Should-Be-In-An-Insane-Asylum-Chic.
“Stellar observation, darling,” Leia tweeted. Fucking tweeted.
“You’re doing a stupid voice.”
“Guilty.”
“And our TV is gone.”
“I hid it in your room.”
“And then hid my door with a bookshelf.”
“And then hid your door with a bookshelf.”
“So are we just going to do this for the next hour or are you going to explain yourself?” Emily deadpanned. Leia tilted her head, her three earrings on each ear jangling with the motion.
“Explain what?” And then Emily lunged forward to strangle her. Luckily, Leia ducked before Emily could commit a horrible crime. “Sorry, sorry! Don’t kill me, please!” Emily just glowered at her. Leia visibly swallowed. “Remember when I came home last week wearing the red A-line and the sneakers and the yellow wig with the glitter?”
“In horrible detail.” Leia had, inexplicably, spilled so much food on her shirt she had to pick something up from the lost and found at the community center, the only decent thing being the dress. The wig was for ‘funsies’.
“Well, the bus was late, and the only person there was this guy that just... exuded beige. So I thought, hey, I look like a crazy person. I’m bored.”
“Leia.”
“And then I started some pseudo-philosophical bullshit about France and then he started making these moony eyes and then I realized he’s a rom-com guy.”
“Oh god.”
“And now he thinks I’m his tragic yet whimsical soulmate here to uplift him and keep him from succumbing to the boredom of the office life and then I got carried away and now the TV’s in your room.” Emily pinched the bridge of her nose. Leia’s been like this ever since they were kids, unintentional cons and all. She could never do anything halfway, she always had to draw it out into some harebrained opera only to be enjoyed by herself and, reluctantly, Emily.
“And what am I?”
“You get to pick?” Leia offered. She seemed genuinely sorry this time. Emily sighed, but scooped some paint off of the couch cushions and tangled it into her hair, twisting it into a simple knot. She was meaning to replace the couch anyway.
“French girl that you had a special connection to ever since you sent me a letter on a whim, and who has traveled to find you only to have to compete with the drab yet caring man you’ve decided to teach liveliness to?” Leia’s eyes sparkled deviously. Emily tried to seem exasperated, but she still readily applied heavy black eyeliner below her eyes for maximum tear streaking.
The pair waited by the door for footsteps, Emily steadily dripping fake tears into her eyes. The telltale sound of loafers on cheap carpet approached. Emily mouthed out a countdown.
“... two, one.”
“Amelie, please,” Leia fluttered, as Emily rapid-fire cussed in French. Slamming the door open, she threw herself forward right into a man in a cheap-looking suit. Huh. He did exude beige.
“Pardon me.” Emily kept her French accent thick, turning back to Leia. She was standing, arm outstretched, eyes widened attractively.
“Uh, Lilian?” The man had dropped the tulips he was holding. Emily recognized them from the bush outside the apartment building.
“Stuart, meet Amelie, Amelie, Stuart.,” Leia breathed, and Emily had to stifle a laugh. The voice was really stupid.

Tumblr media
“Zane, look at me.”
When Zane failed to turn around, Heath rolled his eyes. They were in IKEA trying to buy shit for their new apartment, but Zane could barely make it five feet without getting distracted by something. It didn’t help that the place was decorated for Christmas and everything was red, green, and shiny.
“Zane, look at me!” Heath repeated, this time so loudly that a couple with a young child jumped a few feet away.
“What is it?” Zane asked. He frowned at Heath. “I’m trying to shop here.”
“Snowman napkin holders aren’t on our list, Zane,” Heath chastised, nodding to the package in Zane’s hand. “In fact, none of the stuff you’ve picked up so far has been remotely practical. We have a lot of shit to get, and not a lot of extra money.”
Zane reluctantly put the napkin holders back on the shelf and shoved his hands in his pockets. “I just want to have a fun apartment for Christmas.”
“So do I, but we need things like, you know, a kitchen table and bathroom towels before we can start thinking about napkin holders. You need to focus.”
“Yeah, I guess,” Zane mumbled, looking forlornly at a display of Santa-themed dishware.
“The apartment is the priority for the next few months, alright?” Heath looked at Zane, waiting for acknowledgement that he understood. Zane nodded sadly.
“Good. Going along with that, I think you and I should skip exchanging presents this year and spend the money on apartment stuff. Stuff we can both use and-”
“What?!” By Zane’s horrified expression, you would have thought that Heath had just murdered Santa Claus in cold blood right in front of his face. “That’s crazy. We have to exchange presents."
“Baby, I know you like shopping for me, but you always go way overboard and the money could be much better spent. You can still get little presents for our friends, if you want, but don’t get anything for me.” Heath squeezed Zane’s shoulder. “Promise?”
Zane pursed his lips and turned, walking a few feet away to examine a cookie jar shaped like a gingerbread man. Heath sighed. That conversation had gone just about as well as he’d expected.
***
Surprisingly, Zane did as he was told.
He’d helped Heath buy the essentials for the apartment and do a bit of decorating, and they’d spent the past month adding odds and ends as money allowed. A few weeks before Christmas, Heath yielded and let Zane go bananas at the Dollar Store, and soon every surface had gone Christmas, complete with a big fake tree they’d taken from someone’s trash in Jason’s neighborhood.
Their friend group had decided to forego Christmas presents as well and just go out one night and get drunk, and that had happened and then some. Zane had mailed a few small items to his mom and siblings in Florida, but that was it. Heath hadn’t come home to a growing pile of gifts under the tree. Zane had held back, and Heath was extremely proud. They were actually going to make it through the holiday season without going bankrupt.
Now it was Christmas Eve, and Heath was snuggled into Zane on the couch with Zane’s arms wrapped around him.  The TV was on, but they were barely watching it. They were both in deep food comas, Heath having truly shown his culinary skills by preparing a spectacular turkey dinner and trays of whimsically-shaped Christmas cookies.
“Are you sad we didn’t go to Florida for Christmas?” Heath asked, turning slightly in Zane’s arms so he could see his face.
“No,” Zane answered, and Heath saw that he truly meant it. “This is perfect.”
***
The next morning, Heath woke up alone in their bed.
Heath padded out to the living room, dreading what he would find. But there were still no gifts under the tree, but no boyfriend anywhere, either.
Heath put on a pot of coffee and was about to call Zane when he walked through the front door with a plastic bag in his hand.
“Merry Christmas,” Zane greeted Heath, grinning from ear to ear.
“Merry Christmas.” Heath pecked Zane on the lips. “Where did you go?”
“All over the goddamn city,” Zane answered, dropping his bag on the counter. “But I finally found a place that was open.”
Heath peered in the bag. “You went all over the city for egg nog?”
“You bet your ass I did. It isn’t Christmas without it.”
Heath wrapped his arms around Zane’s neck. “You scared me. I thought you had gone out to retrieve the pile of presents you’d gotten me.”
Zane shook his head. “Nah. I just have one present for you.”
“Zane,” Heath groaned. “You were doing so well.”
“In my defense, I got it before you banned me from buying anything,” Zane replied, pulling Heath closer by his hips and giving him a long, deep kiss.
“Is it your dick?” Heath asked warily, when they’d parted.
Zane laughed. “No, but it is in my pants.”
Heath slid his hands down to the front of Zane’s jeans and felt over his pockets. He raised an eyebrow when he felt some sort of object in his left pocket, and he dug his hand in to fish it out.
“I was going to wait until you’d had coffee first, but now is as good a time as any,” Zane said, his eyes twinkling.
Heath pulled out the object, which he discovered was a small, unassuming black box. Heath shook it, but he didn’t hear anything.
“Well, I guess it’s not my annual carton of Tic-Tacs,” Heath sighed in faux disappointment. “Too bad.”
“Maybe next year,” Zane replied. He was looking at Heath in a way he never had before. It made Heath nervous, but thrilled him too. “Why don’t you open it?”
Heath lifted the lid off the box. Nestled in a bed of white satin was a shining gold band.
“Marry me?” Zane asked softly, brushing his thumb across Heath’s cheek.
Heath was momentarily speechless, but he recovered quickly, disbelief giving way to pure joy. He felt weightless, like his heart was going to just float right out of his chest.
“Aren’t you supposed to get down on one knee?” Heath queried. He realized his hands were shaking and he was about to cry like a little bitch but there was nothing he could do to stop it.
“Do you want me to?” Zane’s eyes were watering now too, and Heath felt a little bit better about his masculinity.
Heath actually considered this. He’d only get one proposal, right?
“No. Just put the ring on me,” Heath answered, passing the box to Zane.
“So your answer is yes?” Zane took the box and pulled out the ring, taking Heath’s hand in his.
“Obviously.”
Zane slid the ring onto Heath’s finger and they both stared at it, their eyes wide.
“We’re engaged,” Heath marveled.
“Yeah.” Zane pulled Heath to his chest. “We are.”
“You would give me a fiancee for Christmas when I told you to give me nothing,” Heath joked, but his voice cracked as his emotions got the better of him.
Zane didn’t answer. He just kissed him.

Get Ready to Fall for the Whimsical New Emily & Meritt Collection for Pottery Barn
We hope you like the products we recommend. Just so you are aware, Freshome may collect a share of sales from the links on this page.
Designers Emily Current & Meritt Elliott are no strangers to Pottery Barn’s aesthetic. The duo has previously collaborated with the store’s younger outfit, PBTeen, on a line of whimsical bedding that runs the gamut from old Hollywood glam to Parisian mystique. Now, they’re back with the new Emily & Meritt line, a collection of grown up housewares.

Get ready to add a touch of whimsy to your table with the Emily & Meritt Collection. Photo courtesy of Pottery Barn
The Emily & Meritt line features fun and sophisticated housewares
This 58-piece collection is a delightful hodgepodge of items. It includes dishware, bar cart tools, bedding and even a few Christmas decorations. But rather than feeling disjointed, each piece feels perfectly curated to fit the designers’ signature style.
The items, while practical, all have twee detailing to them. If you’re a fan of Modcloth or Zooey Deschanel, you’ll know exactly the vibe we’re talking about. The detailing, though, is much subtler than it’s been in previous collections and it’s balanced out by a purposeful use of rich materials. This makes the collection feel elegant and sophisticated, yet still playful.
Check out a selection of our favorite pieces below
1) The Emily & Meritt Bunny Ear Napkin Ring, Set Of 4, $24.50

Who says dinner parties have to be stuffy and boring? Give your guests a smile with the cute pair of bunny ears on these otherwise-simple napkin rings. Best of all, the design is unobtrusive enough to be used all year long, not just when spring rolls around.
2) The Emily & Meritt Gold Top Hat Wine Stopper, $14.50

3) The Emily & Meritt Quilted Brass Champagne Ice Bucket, $69.50

No bar cart is complete without an ice bucket to help keep the party going. Emily & Meritt’s version does just that. However, the quilted pattern that adorns the outside adds an extra layer of refinement to the whole affair.
4) The Emily & Meritt Brass Moon Bookends, Set Of 2,$69

6) The Emily & Meritt Starry Night Double Old Fashioned, Set Of 2, $24.50
Tumblr media
The Emily & Meritt Starry Night Double Old Fashioned, Set Of 2 Courtesy of Pottery Barn
If you’ve always associated Old Fashioned sets with the Mad Men era, you’re not alone. However, the Emily & Meritt take on the Old Fashioned set proves that there’s plenty of room for this generation to get in on the fun. The subtle star detailing on each of the rocks glasses adds a touch of whimsy that’s more than welcome in the 21st century.
7) The Emily & Meritt Hanging Mirror, $79
Tumblr media

Without question, this mirror is one of the simplest pieces that this collection has to offer. But we love it because of its versatility. Geometric designs have been in for years and that’s not changing anytime soon. With that in mind, the shape of this mirror is bound to add a touch of visual interest to any room while still making sure that the design stays fully-rooted in today’s trends.
If you like what you see, you can view the Emily & Meritt collection in its entirety here. What are your favorite pieces? Let us know in the comments.
