I've been trying to figure out a dynamic between neve and rye that I find more compelling, because right now there's not much of anything there for me to sink my little teeth into. but I think I've landed on something delicious with the idea that especially after minrathous gets fucked, rye looks at neve and sees myrna -- someone he feels he keeps letting down horribly no matter how hard he tries not to and can't quite achieve the approval of/connection with that he wishes so it's better to just pull away completely and disengage rather than stay in that unshifting shame. neve is (very understandably) measured and distant with him after what happened, and he's flashing back to his student days of myrna gazing at the perpetually hungover heartbroken heap of a person of him on the other side of her desk every time he missed the deadline of a paper or project like '...can we at least both agree that this is. a bit disappointing. especially considering your potential.' (and him all smudged black eyeshadow and numb ruefulness being like 'sure that's a very kind way to put it myrna thank you'.)

Okey-dokey, first up we have the one and only, no longer six thousand years old, Nereus! Buckle up it gets long.

Nereus is a member of the Order of the Guardians of Lemuria, and one of its current oldest members. He’s very old, though his favorite passtime is being purposefully evasive over his exact age when youngsters ask him. His age aside, Nereus is one of the Guardians most socially aware and acclimated to matters happening outside their Orders boundaries and work. Most Guardians stay within the land they’ve settled in, hidden away from the rest of the world, and for good reason. Some Guardians though, specifically and usually the younger ones, venture out into the world searching for remnants of Lemuria still left out in the world. Nereus, despite his great age, goes out with them to help look for remnants of Lemuria still left, but also to keep an ear out on whatever’s happening beyond the Guardians immediate concern. Nereus is aware of how narrow-minded the Guardians organization can be, as unintentional as it is, and is doing his best to maintain a level of awareness amongst his fellow Guardians about all the issues that circulate in their area and beyond. However, as open as his eyes are, Nereus doesn’t interfere, instead putting most of his efforts into the pressing matters that the Guardians work hard to control. Though wandering around out in the world some Guardians are determined to avoid means Nereus can keep an ear out on any whispering that may allude to someone potentially stumbling across things that really can’t get out into the world.

Nereus also makes sure to keep an eye on the remaining descendants of Lemuria’s monarch lines, the Nektons and the Benthos’s. The Benthos heir, Alpheus, has long since fled Nereus’s watchful eyes, fleeing into the dark corners of the ocean and the growing Dragon Trapper markets to avoid Nereus and pursue his own goals. Nereus is worried about Alpheus, having watched the boy grow up and worried with what he’s planning. Trying to find him is proving difficult though, and some of the other Guardians are persistent Nereus leave Alpheus be, though the part of Nereus that took care of Alpheus as a child can’t help but keep searching for him, desperate to make sure he’s okay and doesn’t hurt himself or do something he may regret. The Nektons are more approachable than their cousin, and Nereus has repeatedly used his seniority to get away with divulging Guardian secrets and knowledge to the Nekton parents and their daughter, Fontaine. Does he use riddles and a patient evasiveness that infuriates Fontaine and her mother, and even gets on Will’s nerves on a bad day? Perhaps, but who can kid an old man trying to have a little fun every once in a while? And does it also add on to his excuses in his own defense against the Guardians who are particular about who is given Guardian secrets, if Nereus makes it seem like he didn’t blatantly tell the Nektons about certain things, and that they figured it out themselves? Yes, it does. And besides, with the way the Nektons explore the seas the same way their ancestors did, Nereus is sure that they would have stumbled across what the Guardians are hiding sooner or later. He knew he couldn’t stop them, and knew he couldn’t bring himself to stop them from doing something that’s in their blood, so he figured preparing them ahead of time was the ultimately safer option for everyone involved.

Most Guardians are in some way connected to the once great Lemuria itself. Some are descended. Some are in debt or awe. And others were scholars or archaeologists, sought out by older members as they stumbled across ruins and recruited into the Guardians cause. Nereus is one of the lucky few who knows exactly how he was connected to Lemuria. He was descended from one of the close scholars of the Nekton family, his six thousand years great grandmother being a close and personal friend to the last monarch, Queen Doreus herself. His ancestor was one of the ones who started the Guardians organization after Lemuria fell, and Nereus sometimes feels bad for using that added legacy to get away with bringing the Nektons deeper into the fold of what the Guardians have been doing for six thousand years now. He’s seen how bad of a power trip using such a legacy in such a way can fall, spiraling off the deep end quickly into abuse and hunger for more power. Nereus works to keep himself humble, and sometimes purposefully seeks out the Nektons only child in order to do so. Aside from enjoying her witty tongue, and hearing her insight on things and how they differ to his, Fontaine has a way of making Nereus feel like an ordinary person by talking about things that even he, in his many travels out and away from the Guardians home location, didn’t know. There’s nothing more humbling than being schooled by a child. Nereus enjoys her company however, genuinely, even though he knows that he can drive her a little insane sometimes.

Nereus is concerned about a lot of the things happening in the world around him. The rumors of dragon raids in the Archipelago, the growing business of Dragon Trappers and the underground trading routes taking root in many markets, whether or not dragon trapping is a trade that those markets allow. The Grimborn brothers growing in power, the Dark Orca ship and the pirates that command her, conflicting reports of Dragon Trappers seen traveling or fighting with dragons bearing riders, depending on who you asked. Even the whispers of trouble brewing further east than the Guardians travel grows more and more pressing with each month that passes. It’s all very concerning business, and Nereus has tried to bring its attention to the other Guardians. Regardless of how many agree with him though, even Nereus himself has to admit that at the end of the day, what the Guardians are working to hide takes precedent, lest the information or news gets out into the wrong hands.

The Guardians that Nereus is a part of are a six thousand year old organization, built on the rubble and ruin of Lost Lemuria. Lemuria is thought to be nothing more than myth six thousand years after its end, most people believing it sank beneath the sea, never to be seen again. The stories that are told of Lemuria in the present day say that she angered the ancient nameless gods of the sea, swallowed up by the waves leaving not a trace behind. These stories are only half true. What actually happened was that Lemuria near destroyed itself. The great kingdom of Lemuria had two royal families, though it had been the Nektons that had reigned as Lemuria’s monarchs for some time until Lemuria’s last days. The Benthos’s of the time had been biting at the bit for a chance at Lemuria’s reigns, and after many inner quarrels, they attempted to stage a coup against their cousins. However, the coup failed, but not before it kickstarted the biggest civil war known in history. The fights between the two royal family lines as the Benthos’s tried to claw the monarch title from the Nektons grew and grew until some of Lemuria’s oldest devices were placed on the playing board, ultimately dooming the kingdom as a whole. What had made Lemuria such a massive kingdom was its ability and ingenuity to create devices that were seemingly magic. Maps of the stars and seas activated by water, treasure troves of knowledge and information activated by dragons fire, naval ships that sped through the water like they were powered by the currents themselves, and the royal Scepter itself was said to have the ability to speak to dragons. It was instruments similar to the Scepter that the Benthos’s brought to the table in a last ditched attempt to win against the Nektons, and it was the dragons that they summoned that doomed Lemuria.

The dragons that the Benthos’s dragged into the fight were leviathans from the deepest parts of the ocean, great beasts of the Leviathan Class that the Lemurians referred to as Monumentials. The Monumentials were a force to be reckoned with, and unfortunately for Lemuria and the rest of the world, they couldn’t be controlled the way that the Benthos’s thought they could be. The Benthos’s lost control of the very creatures they weaponized, and soon the Monumentials were raging rampant across the world as they fought both the ones who drove them into aggression and each other. Lemuria was destroyed by both the Monumentials and itself due to the Benthos coup, and the rest of the world was left in such a ragged state by the time the last Queen of Lemuria, Queen Doreus Nekton, put a stop to the Monumentials madness, that within the next hundred years, people wondered if Lemuria had ever really existed at all. The world picked itself back up again, and the remaining survivors of the once great Lemuria banded together under Queen Doreus’s last order as Queen of Lemuria; ensure that it never happens again.

The Guardians formed and worked to make sure that what happened never happened again. It was only because of Queen Doreus somehow figuring out how to calm the Monumentials enough to stop their fighting that the world and everyone in it wasn’t destroyed, and they weren’t sure what would happen if the Monumentials were driven to a global anger a second time. The first generation Guardians decided under Doreus’s command that Lemuria could never form again. Its time had come and gone, and if it didn’t form as a kingdom a second time, the chances of the same situation that led to its destruction the first time had a lower chance of happening a second time. This meant ensuring that everyone eventually believed that Lemuria had never been real at all. As most of Lemuria and all her knowledge had been destroyed during the war, the Monumentials essentially helped ensure that no one within the next few generations could find anything that would make them second guess. However, bits and pieces still floated. Documents and tools and instruments taken to different corners of the world during the many evacuations during the Benthos and Nekton war, temples and villages and sites built in places beyond the kingdom itself. People that weren’t tracked down and accounted for after Lemuria destroyed, who took personal items with them as they fled to any part of the world still standing after the Monumentials destroyed nearly everything else. The remaining Nektons and Benthos’s, scattered across the ocean. Lemuria was gone but bits and pieces of her still remained. The Guardians worked to gather everything they could find, bringing it to the location they started to set up as a base. Aside from gathering everything to make sure no one realized Lemuria had been real, the Guardians also sought to preserve the bits that weren’t destroyed by the Benthos and Nekton war. What had happened was a tragedy for everyone involved, and they couldn’t bring themselves to let everything that Lemuria had built be truly lost to time.

The Guardians also sought to keep an eye on the Monumentials. They had been just as much victims to the war as everyone else, dragged into a feud they’d had no part or business being dragged into. Despite that though, they were still dangerous. Leviathan class dragons were everywhere in the world, but there was a reason there weren’t nearly as many as the much smaller species of dragons, and there was a reason they usually didn’t settle near people; disaster followed nearly every time. So the Guardians worked to keep an eye on the Monumentials, ensure they stayed in areas that no human might accidentally stumble across them, and potentially agitate them into attacking. They also worked to make sure no one knew how to rebuild the instruments that were initially used to aggravate the Monumentials to the point that they had been, and the worked to make sure that no one found the Monumentials themselves. The Guardians worked to protect the world from the Monumentials, and the Monumentials from the rest of the world. They couldn’t keep them from interacting with each other, but the Monumentials never aggravated each other to the point that the Benthos coup had. So long as no one knew about them, and no one tried to repeat, unintentionally or otherwise, what had happen six thousand years prior, everyone was safe. It was a heavy burden for the Guardians to deal with, and over the years they grew preoccupied with their original goals to the point they avoided interfering in things happening elsewhere for fear of what happened to Lemuria happening again. But the Monumentials and the rest of the world are still safe, though recent business with the Nektons and the only remaining Benthos, Alpheus, has some members growing concerned something bad may happen.

Oookay, that part is done! Now for the authors note section.

Since I’m not bringing any of the magic over from The Deep. Stuff like Nereus being six thousand years old, the prophecy of the Chosen One, or the magical Scepter that controls the Monumentials, it just doesn’t exist here. This means I had to get creative. Nereus is now descended from one of Doreus’s closest advisors and friends, leaving him still connected to the Nektons. I accidentally made myself really angsty about him and Alpheus, which wasn’t entirely intentional but now all I can think about is what his relationship with Alpheus is like and how complicated it must be because of everything that’s happened between the two of them (both in my crossover and canon).

And because there’s no prophecy of the Chosen One, I had to do something different for the Guardians and even Alpheus. So what I came up with was honestly similar to stuff from the newer Godzilla movies. The Guardians are acting kind of like MONARCH here, secretly keeping an eye on these giant creatures that are just roaming around, because with no magic that means Doreus never put them to sleep. After Lemuria was destroyed, the Monumentials were still around. So the Guardians are keeping an eye on them. Making sure no one hurts them and that they don’t hurt anyone else. The Guardians are also tracking down all the remnants of Lemuria that they can find, in order to preserve what’s left and also keep people from asking questions. The less people know, the less likely they are to try and repeat the same mistakes under the premise of ‘well we know what happened last time so it’ll be different this time’ which never works out. The device used by the Benthos’s to drag the Monumentials into their war with the Nektons, and the Scepter itself, are like a more advanced but far older version of Valka’s staff, or on the Godzilla thread, something like the Orca from King of the Monsters.

Lemuria is destroyed here. Not sank, destroyed. There’s almost nothing left of it. Just pieces floating around here and there. Devices that got lost to the corners of the earth, ships and old buildings that don’t fit with anything else. Stories and legends that have culminated over six thousand years, with the only real genuine interpretations of them being what’s with the Guardians or tucked away in some dusty catalog of the current civilizations with records old enough to date back to that time. Some families still have their Lemurian names, like the Nektons and the Benthos’s, but very few remember where they originated from. As far as the vast majority of the planet is aware, Lemuria might have been real, but it was nowhere near as big as the massive kingdom on par with Ancient Rome or Greece or Egypt that it actually was, and it certainly doesn’t exist now. And as far as the Guardians know, Doreus may have died dealing with the Monumentials. Or she may have escaped, going back to her family in order to raise her children in safety. All they know is that she left instructions and her final orders before she went back to deal with the Monumentials, and she was never seen after that. Even her dragon disappeared somewhere to never be seen again.

Figuring out this stuff has been fun, and like a lot of the later story elements, I’m gonna be hinting to/building up to them pretty early on in the fic. The specific arcs like what Alpheus is doing and how the Riders interact with the Guardians/Monumentials will be saved for the actual fic. Sorry for such a long post but a lot of the Guardian stuff went in hand with the Nereus stuff, and I didn’t think to make a second post until I’d already typed all this out

when I was in high school there was a tendency whenever there was an attractive boy to simply fan over him. in a way that talked over everything he might say for himself and created a narrative that completely ignored, the fact in some cases, that he was really struggling—or if he was struggling, to pin all the blame on the girl he’s dating and completely ignore the thousands of other factors (no it can’t be mental illness or unaccommodated disability or systemic abuse or exploitation and if he is in an abusive relationship we won’t ever consider the factors that put him at risk for that)

Tucker & Sam would carry him around with them, usually speaking with him and including him in their activities.

After all you get to travel world with your crew, see and explore the most interesting wonders, and get paid to shoot all of that in camera. What more can you ask for? Yeah your love life sucked because you were never at a one place for long. But who cares? You have your camera and your passion.

• Your crew has been assigned to shoot a new show by channel which is showing and telling people about the tribal life and community of an x forest. You were excited.

• You shooted and captured all the things about the tribal community. The people were friendly once they warmed up to your team. They showed and told you everything about their community, about forest, their lifestyle through a member of yours who knew their language and translated everything.

• You got to know about many tribal traditions, rituals, festive, their beliefs, their worships, hunting, farming style but what caught your attention was a certain tall, muscular young tribe man.

• He would always be with your crew even if he is not needed. You were shooting a particular episode on the womens in tribe? He was still there silently just observing you all especially you in a way you didn't notice.

• Your crew tried fishing for some fun in break time. And as usual your clumsy self would trip and ruin everything embarassing yourself. He would later leave a basket full of fish for you silently.

• You noticed that he was kinda good looking. Okay not kinda but a lot good looking with his huge built, dark black tribal tattoos covering his tan arms and chest, his sharp bone jewellery giving all Tarzan vibes with his long black hair tied in half bun that many women in community wished to be his mate. Also because he was a excellent hunter.

• You once told someone in community casually that you wished to taste raw natural honey from honeycombs like other tribals but were scared due to honeybees and he heard it. Well next day he gives you a huge piece of honeycomb anonymously ,freshly teared by him even though it caused him serval stinks from honey bee because this was not the season to collect honey but he would do anything for you.

• Their community had a practice where once in a year men would wear their best dresses, jewellery trying to impress womens and get their attention. This was a special episode that you weren't shooting but the other cameraman was doing because you were on the other side of forest with a few crew members shooting some shots of forest for another episode as your time of departure were close and you have to finish your work fast.

• You finished your shots. And walked a bit around the forest a little more to explore while your fellow mates moved back to see the celebration.

• You saw yan tribe sitting all alone under a tree. You felt sad seeing him all alone like this instead of being in the celebration with others. Well might be the women whose attention he is trying to grab chose someone else in competition you thought.

You tried to console him by speaking in your broken fluency in their tribe language which you have learned by staying with them for months. You were scared that you might have said something offensive to him unconsciously due to the language barrier because his expressions didn't change but became serious.

He only looked up at you and held your hand in his and said "MATE". You knew your speaking and listening skills towards his language were below average but you were 101% sure what mate word that he said means. And that scared you to dead because seeing his big strong hand holding your fragile one tightly made it clear that he is not going to let you leave at any cost.

the club setting was filled with more excitement tonight. don't get it twisted, any club or event hosted by the haitanis was guaranteed to be the event of the day, good vibes, hot people, and lots of money to be made. but when one of the brothers was actually present at the club? something about their aura seemed to bring out the vibes in people.

ran's hooded gaze watched adoringly at you across the club, the setting bringing nostalgia to the first time you met. ever the social butterfly you were, accepting another phone number from one of the girlfriends you made tonight. the other members of the roundtable looked at one another, wondering if the haitani brother was even present.

your boyfriend appeared neutral as he let the guy ramble on about how hot you were, and what he would do to you given the chance. he missed the harsh roll of ran's eyes. if he didn't know you were spoken for, he would make sure this guy knew by the end of the night.

as if on queue, you waved bye to your new friends and started to make your way to the table. eyes followed your figure as you passed, but that was to be expected when the prettiest girl at the club walked past.

the man next to you seemed to go silent since your arrival at the table, the consequences of his actions just hitting. a deep breath followed by a gulp as he wiped his damp hands against his slacks. he almost flinched when your hooded, yet dominating gaze met his own eyes, but after remembering who and where he was, he gained his composure almost as quickly as it left.

"nah 'ts nothin'," he waved his hand. "just a passing thought, is all..."

others both around the roundtable and those dancing near it tried not to make it obvious that they were watching the exchange going down. they found themselves pitying a character who would not deserve it, under different circumstances. but, as discussed, the haitani aura seems to throw things off of balance.

if he didn't want to talk, ran would do it for him. "he wants to know if your single, claims he could give you a lay better than your man could,"

your eyes left the man, instead looking over your boyfriends face in silent communication.

eyes darted between you, awaiting your response, thus his sentence in anticipation. he didn't know what telepathic language you were communicating in, but he was glad to not hear his fate get discussed right in front of him.

catching wind of what was about to happen, you excused yourself from the table, leaving a kiss on the corner of rans mouth, whispering a 'be good' in his ear before leaving.

you had dragged your boyfriend to one of your friend's parties, much to his dismay. he's sworn off drinking after geto's blackmail folder started getting a bit thick, meaning there was nothing fun to do other than socialise, but he didn't want to after people flocked to him for the wrong reasons.

so now he was maybe the only sober one in this lively scene, which leads to the current events.

he spoke your name for clarity. "uhh, I'm not sure. you can go ask her if you want. ill even put in a good word for you."

has this man been a fraction more sober, he would've questioned why the blindfolded man's smile was so wide, or why he was so willing to help, but alas, this was a party and alcohol was supplied.

"thanks, dude! you're such a lifesaver."

satoru almost felt bad for the guy. he was practically buzzing whilst traversing through the sweaty bodies in search of you. he felt bad until he remembered how bored he was before this happened, he has to put himself first sometimes.

after a couple stumbles, reroutes and a rest break, they had finally found you in your angelic beauty, laughing with a group of girls he didn't know.

he thought it was quite cute how the guy seemed to become more shy at the sight of you, and satoru couldn't blame him. had he been someone more normal, he would act the same in your presence.

one of the girls caught sight of the pair by the entry and gestured you towards them. your face softened slightly at the sight of your six-foot-something boyfriend and his... friend?

"hey toru," you smiled, before looking at the other man. "who’s this?"

satoru said nothing, slapping the guy a little too harshly on the back before stepping back. the floor was his.

"hey," he breathed out, before introducing himself. "i saw you come in with your friend earlier, and just wanted to know if you were seeing anyone?"

your heart rate picked up, but not for the reason the guy was hoping. why was gojo like this? did he enjoy seeing you suffer?

he obviously did as when you looked over your shoulder to the said man, he gave you a big, encouraging grin with both thumbs up. the audacity.

he had thrown you to the wolves and left you to fend for yourself.

"uhm..." you breathed, trying not to shatter the poor guy's heart. "i have a boyfriend, unfortunately. sorry."

"what do you mean, unfortunately!" satoru mocked you from behind the guy. "I'm a total catch, right?" he turned to the guy. "right??"

though delayed, the guy had finally come to the realisation he had been punked by the man who egged him on the whole time. his face burst into a deep shade of red, apologising profusely before rushing back into the crowd.

"you're such an ass, gojo."

"the last name huh?" he scratched the back of his neck. "I'm in for it arent i?"

What was the process like for designing the ActiRangers, their civilian and suited forms? Their suits look so cool, it’s definitely clear you have a lot of familiarity with the genre while also having great ideas on how to innovate and add your own unique elements! Did they go through lots of conceptual iterations, or did they come pretty naturally? Any particular teams that inspired you, like SPD or RPM with their numbered members?

So the Actirangers started out as characters designed for a private little Tokusatsu OC jam I did with some friends! The design I submitted was Pink, (hence why she's kinda the main character of the story)

So Pink's suit was the first one designed, hence how she's kinda the most basic of the Rangers. I had just got done watching Birdie Wing and Love After World Domination and thought it would be kinda fun for a golf themed sentai hero.

She was originally going to be ActiRanger 5 before I thought of the "Four/Fore" golf pun.

The rest of the team was then designed from there with each of their sports in mind and some general vibes.

I don't think they went through all that much iteration, though I will say since I tend to draw them in Black and White I sometimes mix up which parts of their suits are their color and which parts are black.

I wanted to give them each some kind of Power Weapon so I stuck to stick sports and also Table Tennis. (I am still weirdly fond of the old Penny Arcade Paint the Line comics)

As far as Power Ranger teams that inspired them, Mighty Morphin' is obviously the biggest inspo. (The Dan Mora run on the Go Go Power Rangers comics is awesome.) Time Force, S.P.D. and RPM were all on my mind as well.

For the Gambit Gang I was struggling to come up with a fun villain theme and eventually figureod out that the enemy to the "Sports" team had to be the "Chess Club". (Insert joke about polycules and board games)

Gray in particular was conceived at this point when I and wanted an Evil Ranger on their side. Chess Knights having a vague horse theme, he obviously had to be Polo! His design draws pretty heavily from Mystic Force's Koragg which is still IMO one of the sickest designs Sentai has ever cooked.

I am in love with her because

1. She has an impeccable sense of fashion, she never misses, could make a paper bag look good

2. Docktown sucks so bad, like major Kirkwall vibes, and she loves it SO MUCH

3. If you give money to the people asking for it on the streets in Docktown, sometimes Neve will check in with them and make sure they have a place to stay it’s so sweet !!!

4. She cannot cook at all. Only eats fried fish. Boils her coffee. Zero domestic skills, completely perfect

5. She loves Bellara so much, she’s such a good friend ;-; She finds all her serials and helps her try to work out the mysteries! She gets her goat cheese! She comes to Cyrian’s funeral ;-;

Dear Baby Bats - Goth Band Recommendations

As a middle sibling goth (I’ve been in the subculture for 10 years now, so not a baby bat but not an elder goth either), let me turn you on to some bands because we do not gatekeep in this house!! Also, if you want consistently good lesser-known & brand new goth band recs, go follow Awfully Sinister on TikTok and Instagram. He’s a DJ & has great recs. I've found so much music through him because it's really hard to keep up with all the new bands cropping up every year. You want to avoid the goth subreddit because they are extremely gatekeeper-y and argue over labels constantly. It’ll just confuse you, and they are not nice over there.

If you’re very new to the subculture, and you haven’t yet listened to all of Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Christian Death, Cocteau Twins, Clan of Xymox, Joy Division, and Depeche Mode, go do so now. You'll want to know which of them you really enjoy the most because it will help you know which sub-subgenre(s) of goth you want to watch out for, and it'll tell you what to look for to find it. For example, Sisters of Mercy is the gothic rock subgenre, Christian Death is deathrock, Cocteau Twins is ethereal wave, Clan of Xymox is like the original darkwave, Joy Division is classic post-punk, etc. I haven’t included industrial, despite its proximity to the goth subculture, just because I actually don’t really know that many industrial bands beyond Skippy Puppy, Ministry, and Throbbing Gristle. Some other goth/goth-adjacent staple bands (that are very popular and very influential) that you should listen to if you haven’t already are The Damned, Killing Joke, The Cult, and Adam and the Ants/Adam Ant). I didn't know where to put She Wants Revenge or London After Midnight either, but they're also great.

I’ve bolded some of my absolute must-listen to goth bands, and I've put monthly Spotify listeners for each band so you know which ones deserve WAY more love. And in my pre-list ramblings for each OG band, I've given you some key terms to look up so you can more easily find music that's similar to what you enjoy. Okay, here we go:

If you like Bauhaus:

Bauhaus is a hard one because honestly, nobody really sounds like them, and they aren't really that closely associated with a specific sub-subgenre of goth. They were post-punk, they were art rock, they were experimental, they were sometimes very punk and at other times very gothic rock. They liked to call themselves “dark glam rock” (all four members are massive Bowie, T-Rex, and Iggy Pop fans), but you’re gonna have a hard time finding bands that sound like them if you look that term up. They probably have one of the most unique sounds of all-time. They’re my favorite band (I even have a tattoo for them, like I am devoted lol), but even I have a difficult time finding other bands that scratch their particular itch for me. These bands I’ve listed are as close as you’re gonna get to Bauhaus’ general vibe imo.

Virgin Prunes (80’s band that is technically deathrock but has the same absolutely unhinged, danceable sound that Bauhaus has, so they’re going here; one of my favorites; no one else does it like them and no one else ever will; I would actually give my left foot to see them live); 13.2k monthly listeners (this is actually physically painful to me, how is it this low!!! don't walk, RUN to go listen to them)

Alien Sex Fiend (80’s classic unhinged goth); 77k monthly listeners

Sextile (modern band that has some very Bauhaus-sounding guitar work at times but with heavy industrial influences); 147k listeners

The Danse Society (80’s unhinged goth; has similar experimental vibes to Bauhaus imo; one of my fave goth groups); 36k listeners

Sex Beat (80’s); not even really on Spotify

Ritual Howls (modern band; I don’t know why it gives Bauhaus, but it does; one of the few modern bands that scratches that particular itch for me); 45k listeners

The Agnes Circle (modern band; one of my favorites; they have the right Bauhaus-like atmosphere for me); 52k listeners

Traitrs (I can’t explain why they remind me of Bauhaus, but they do; another one of my fave modern bands; they make me want to start levitating and doing the Ian Curtis dance in the same way Bauhaus does lol); 239k listeners

Paralisis Permanente (underrated 80’s; they have a lot in common with Bauhaus’s sound actually, def give them a try!); 54k monthly listeners

The Birthday Party (80s band, totally unhinged; they’re less dark and atmospheric than Bauhaus, but if you take one listen to their album Junkyard, you’ll know exactly why I put them under this category haha; Nick Cave is the vocalist, which is amazing); 54k listeners

Tones on Tail (80s; Daniel Ash & Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus formed this group; I’d put Love and Rockets as well, which is all of Bauhaus’s members except Peter Murphy, but Love and Rockets weirdly bears little resemblance to Bauhaus’s music; but if you just generally want more of Bauhaus members' work, Love and Rockets is great, too); 81k listeners

Dalis Car (80s; collaboration between Peter Murphy and Japan's bassist; their music is extremely weird, so only listen if you really love the batshit insane Bauhaus songs or if you really live and breathe Peter Murphy like I do lol; their description on Spotify is so fucking funny); 7k listeners

I'd also recommend listening to Daniel Ash, David J, and Peter Murphy's solo work. They're all great!! Peter also did some amazing collaborations with Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails); the version of Reptile that they did together is better than Nine Inch Nail's original version imo, and you can find that entire session on Youtube!

If you like Siouxsie and the Banshees:

Siouxsie is another one that's hard to pin down sound-wise because again, they don't really fit into one specific sub-subgenre, so all of these recs are just goth bands with female vocalists who have the same kind of powerful vocals that Siouxsie does.

Second Still (modern band, one of my faves; singer sounds a lot like Siouxsie to me at times); 69k listeners

Skeletal Family (80’s band; has the same “women in punk” vibes that Siouxsie has); 55k listeners

Xmal Deutschland (80’s band; has the same powerful vocals that Siouxsie has; makes you wanna go stupid go crazy the way the Banshees do); 73k listeners

Secret Shame (modern band w/ woman singer; has the same rage that Siouxsie songs have to me, especially early Siouxsie); 6k listeners (let's get those numbers up, folks!!!)

Rosegarden Funeral Party (modern band w/ a woman vocalist); 57k listeners

Mephisto Walz (90s & 2000s; sounds so much like the Banshees at times); 56k listeners

If you like Depeche Mode:

For Depeche Mode enjoyers (which DM is kind of on the fringes of what’s considered “goth,” but they’re so entrenched in the subculture that I included them anyway), you’re gonna want to delve into goth playlists and modern goth that leans towards synthpop/synthwave. So those are the kinds of playlists you’ll want to search up for similar sounds to DM.

Nuovo Testamento (modern band; combines post-punk and pop elements in a way that’s very similar to Depeche Mode; lots of fun live, and they have a good sound); 25k listeners

Boy Harsher (modern band; relies heavily on synth; feels like it should be playing at every goth club); 558k listeners

ULTRA SUNN (modern band; singer sounds like Dave Gahan); 217k listeners (they just blew up on tiktok recently, which explains why this just skyrocketed since the last time I was on their Spotify page lol; good for them, good for them, they deserve it)

Most of these bands will be modern ones because Clan of Xymox was honestly way ahead of their time. (They are also amazing live, so go see them before they eventually call it quits!) For playlists that are full of their vibe, you’re gonna want to look up “darkwave” playlists. Clan of Xymox pioneered darkwave, so any darkwave band you listen to is gonna be influenced by their sound in some way or another.

All of these bands will be ones that sound very classically post-punk, so those are the playlists to search out; emphasis on "classic" because post-punk is a very broad term that gets applied to a lot of music. I would argue that Joy Division has had the most influence out of all the OG goth bands on the current goth sound/goth renaissance we're going through right now, so there are a LOT of bands out there for you if you’re a JD fan.

A lot of the 90s and 2000s goth bands were very derivative of Sisters of Mercy.
