Since Percy can talk to sea creatures, I'd like to think that one day he passed a pet shop with all these fish screaming at him in agony. Since then there has been a giant aquarium in cabin 3 with fish. He converses with them daily when he's at camp. He gave them all names (they were delighted to hear his suggestions).

There is one grumpy grouch that always tries to eat as much food before all the other fish. He has to keep him forcibly apart in a tiny water ball during dinner. He named him Zeus. Percy doesn't give a shit. Poseidon knows and thinks it is hilarious.

Chiron, who takes care of them when Percy's gone, cannot understand them but he doesn't like the way they look so judgemental. They are very much gossiping about him to his face.

Etho's behavior in session 5 was frankly unhinged. he killed Bdubs' horse IN FRONT OF HIM and managed to get away scot-free in the chaos of the situation. AND THEN he stole the chicken farm hopper while HALF THE TEAM was in their base without them noticing, tried to trade it BACK to them, and finally returned it after GAINING THEIR ALLIANCE? what even. good for him.

getting emotional over footage of an amateur scuba diver interacting with a coelacanth. they are hunted by large deepwater predators, and here comes a large creature bearing the brightest lights it's ever seen, making strange noises, but it does not shy away. it hovers, calmly, as the diver reaches out and trails a hand down its back. im strongly against the anthropomorphizing of real life animals but the stupid emotional part of me loudly insists this is because it recognizes us, the alternating movements of its four paired limbs matching the diver's four paired limbs, & it is thinking, "hello, cousins, we missed you these 66 million years, it's so good to see you again. welcome back, welcome home."

I'm really curious about how your fountains hold up to running water over time. Does the glaze protect the ceramic? Do you only use distilled water? Or is it expected that they'll wear through use given long enough? Cuz, uh, you said something about wanting people to read their own ideas and experiences into your work, and now I'm thinking about a jagged sword wound that only grows larger but nevertheless more smooth over time...

I work in ceramic clay, fired to temperatures between 2200-2380 degrees F. Like common household dishes, this material holds up incredibly well against water. It goes through a process called vitrification, which makes it very waterproof, and is even more protected by glazes. Assuming the water in the sculptures is not freezing inside them, the time it would take to noticeably wear down the clay (at the rate water would be flowing through pieces of this size) will likely not happen within our lifetimes; the pumps that power the fountains will die and have to be replaced long before the water has any impact on the ceramic. The sword, mere iron, will rust to dust before water wears the first channel into the sculpture.

Ceramic is an incredibly strong, long-lasting material. If it's not shattered, it can endure for thousands of years, especially when fired to high temperatures, as these pieces are. Some of the oldest pottery pieces are over 20,000 years old, and while they are broken, they are remarkably un-worn. This is the Venus of Dolní Věstonice, estimated age between 31,000–27,000 years old, made in the paleolithic era. It was fired at low temperatures. It's so intact that a child's fingerprint, left on the clay before it was fired, was able to be detected on its surface.

The sculptures I make will likely outlive me. My work must speak for itself because there is every chance it will be speaking long after I am silent. If they do not break, they might outlive everyone who ever knew my name; if they are discarded in the right conditions, they might outlive this age, this language, this civilization, and be found thousands and thousands of years from now, still whole enough to be understood.
