Hi GT,
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I absolutely love the recs you've given (you've introduced me to tomione, and I love it!) and I was wondering if it's possible to give you some recs in return? There are some books and fics that definitely have dramione / got vibes, and I was wondering if I could share them with you!
So glad you've enjoyed them! Feel free to rec me anything you want. I've read most of the classic recs in terms of fic and adjacent content (Cruel Prince et al), but I'll try anything that's well-written. My tastes run towards weird and/or audaciously creative stuff, and I can forgive a lot of weaknesses in plot on the grounds of (1) ambition or (2) character work. My turnoffs are instalove, protagonists who can't fail, and most Y/A (I'm not a hater, I swear, I just need characters who can say "fuck" when their leg gets chopped off.)
I'm also a fan of weird and fucked-up dynamics.(Wuthering Heights was my favorite book for a while, and as a teenager I wrote an AU in which the book ends on a long sex scene where Heathcliff fucks Cathy's ghost and then immediately gets murdered by Catherine 2.) Obviously, I am very normal.
#greenteacup asks#my beef with Y/A is mostly expressed in a dissonance between tone and content#LOVE the content. dystopia fantasy horror sex and blood — awesome. but question. why are they all saying 'darn'?#like in the vampire diaries where they'll watch people get eaten and then 2 episodes later be like 'omg SCHOOL DANCE'#(EDIT: actually in fairness. on the vampire diaries. it was mostly just caroline that did that. unfair example my apologies)#& i distinguish this critique from a common bitch-and-moan complaint about tv shows being interested in 'girly' things#like relationships and social standing. that is not my complaint. that shit is delicious. i will chomp that shit for days#my issue is that when the stakes oscillate wildly from episode to episode and i can't tell what the main thing is#like sorry. a story with murder in it is always going to be about murder. you can't make it not about murder#unfortunately! many have tried.#and in general i have difficulty reading about teenagers bc—#(she says having written 600k words about them OKAY I KNOW. i contain multitudes.)#because they're either mini-adults (preferred flavor. jude in the cruel prince nails this) or like leetol babies to me#and unless it's something like the hunger games where the Leetol Baby thing is part of the story#i'm like. hang on. you're 12 what are you doing here#percy jackson was hard for me to re-read as an adult for this reason#which is why they're enjoyable for teenagers! because as a teenager you DO feel like an adult#and you like reading books that treat you like one! nothing wrong with that! healthy even!#only then you get past the teenage years (mashallah) and you get stuff like twilight#where of COURSE bella doesn't think twice about 117 year old man falling in love with her#because he looks like a rich mysterious 17-year-old hottie#but you reread it later and it's like um well. that. could be explored a little more maybe.#i'm not even necessarily opposed to it. candidly. still team edward. i just think the dynamic should be more fucked up and juicy.#which Y/A authors are often reluctant to do. like. COWARDS! face the nasty consequences of your narrative decisions!#anyhow. you didn't ask for any of this. please give me your recs lovely person you seem very nice.

"[Elizabeth Woodville's] piety as queen seems to have been broadly conventional for a fifteenth-century royal, encompassing pilgrimages, membership of various fraternities, a particular devotion to her name saint, notable generosity to the Carthusians, and the foundation of a chantry at Westminster after her son was born there. ['On other occasions she supported planned religious foundations in London, […] made generous gifts to Eton College, and petitioned the pope to extend the circumstances in which indulgences could be acquired by observing the feast of the Visitation']. One possible indicator of a more personal, and more sophisticated, thread in her piety is a book of Hours of the Guardian Angel which Sutton and Visser-Fuchs have argued was commissioned for her, very possibly at her request."
-J.L. Laynesmith, "Elizabeth Woodville: The Knight's Widow", Later Plantagenet and Wars of the Roses Consorts: Power, Influence, Dynasty
#historicwomendaily#elizabeth woodville#my post#friendly reminder that there's nothing indicating that Elizabeth was exceptionally pious or that her piety was 'beyond purely conventional'#(something first claimed by Anne Crawford who simultaneously claimed that Elizabeth was 'grasping and totally lacking in scruple' so...)#EW's piety as queen may have stood out compared to former 15th century predecessors and definitely stood out compared to her husband#but her actions in themselves were not especially novel or 'beyond normal' and by themselves don't indicate unusual piety on her part#As Laynesmith's more recent research observes they seem to have been 'broadly conventional'#A conclusion arrived at Derek Neal as well who also points out that in general queens and elite noblewomen simply had wider means#of 'visible material expression of [their] personal devotion' - and also emphasizes how we should look at their wider circumstances#to understand their actions (eg: the death of Elizabeth's son George in 1479 as a motivating factor)#It's nice that we know a bit about Elizabeth's more personal piety - for eg she seems to have developed an attachment to Westminster Abbey#It's possible her (outward) piety increased across her queenship - she undertook most of her religious projects in later years#But again - none of them indicate the *level* of her piety (ie: they don't indicate that she was beyond conventionally pious)#By 1475 it seems that contemporaries identified Cecily Neville as the most personally devout from the Yorkist family#(though Elizabeth and even Cecily's sons were far greater patrons)#I think people also assume this because of her retirement to Westminster post 1485#which doesn't work because 1) we don't actually know when she retired? as Laynesmith says there is no actual evidence for the traditional#date of 12 February 1487#2) she had very secular reasons for retiring (grief over the death of her children? her lack of dower lands or estates which most other#widows had? her options were very limited; choosing to reside in the abbey is not particularly surprising. it's a massive and unneeded jump#to claim that it was motivated solely by piety (especially because it wasn't a complete 'retirement' in the way people assume it was)#I think historians have a habit of using her piety as a GOTCHA!' point against her vilification - which is a flawed and stupid argument#Elizabeth could be the most pious individual in the world and still be the pantomime villain Ricardians/Yorkists claim she was#They're not mutually exclusive; this line of thinking is useless#I think this also stems from the fact that we simply know very little about Elizabeth as an individual (ie: her hobbies/interests)#certainly far less than we do for other prominent women Margaret of Anjou; Elizabeth of York;; Cecily Neville or Margaret Beaufort#and I think rather than emphasizing that gap of knowledge her historians merely try to fill it up with 'she was pious!'#which is ... an incredibly lackluster take. I think it's better to just acknowledge that we don't know much about this historical figure#ie: I do wish that her piety and patronage was emphasized more yes. but it shouldn't flip too far to the other side either.

#ooh I have a lot of thoughts about Six and Charley and her mysteriousness and how he responds to it#but they intersect with my Six's Mental Health Thoughts which are extremely headcanony#and I know a lot of the fandom would rather just kind of wall off Twin Dilemma and assume Six's proper characterization doesn't include it#and I don't know that I blame them for that#but I like trying to make things fit together#and also there's no way to do that without probably misusing real-world mental health terminology#because (watsonian) the doctor is an alien with an alien brain and (doylist) the writers do not know all that much about psychiatry#but. at least for a bit after his regeneration he deals with paranoia right?#like that's the term the narrative uses. (and it clearly explains his attack on peri - he's perceiving her as a threat due to delusion)#& she says 'I'm not letting a manic depressive paranoid personality like you shut me up' & he objects specifically to 'manic depressive'#later in uhhhh revelation of the daleks? he doesn't tell her about a real danger#and he says 'I didn't want to burden you with what might have been a piece of paranoid speculation on my part'#again I cannot emphasize enough how much I am talking about a fictional character with fictional problems. I do not know psychiatry either!#I do not want to mislead#but one of this character's problems is that he has a badly calibrated sense of danger. sometimes he sees things as threatening that aren't#and sometimes he overcompensates for that#and I think when he first meets Charley he is really not very sure whether he should trust the alarm bells he's hearing or not#she seems deeply suspicious! but also nice? he wants to like her? but deeply suspicious!#'or am I just being crazy?' he asks himself#and so he just kind of... keeps watching her#also unrelatedly to all that I think he kind of likes having the excuse of Mystery for doing what he does anyway which is orbiting her#just slightly obsessing over his companion at the time even if he also occasionally forgets they're there#(he's just very all or nothing in everything all the time)#but yeah. you know how 11 gets about Clara and her Mystery Plotline? 6 is like that about every companion in turn anyway#so he doesn't actually mind having the excuse of Mystery with Charley#this is also why 6 and Clara is so compelling#(this was a tag essay in response to lrb but I decided it was opening too many cans of worms and needed its own post)

So I have not yet picked up The Witcher season 3, but I'm sure I will eventually. I do however feel the need to whinge a bit about season 2.
So I will be the first to admit that I am a little Jaskier gremlin. Frankly he is the main reason I am watching this show. I also recognize that he is not the main main character and that there will be episodes not about him, and that's fine. That is not my problem. What my problem is, is that he got completely shafted by season 2 even when he was here, and honestly I don't know why he was after his little trip with Yennefer (the best part of that season in my opinion btw). After that point, he has no narrative or character reason to be here, because Geralt does not give a shit about him it seems. His last episode in season 1 was great drama, Geralt was a complete asshole to him and Jaskier was understandably hurt by that. And yet don't actually bother picking that up at all in season 2. It starts off great with the Butcher song, but it's never resolved in a satisfying way. Geralt has no moment to actually acknowledge that Jaskier didn't deserve that treatment on the mountain, he just mutters a clearly half hearted apology and Jaskier just takes it. And that's it. That's the entire emotional resolution. The first thing Geralt says to him is "I need your help" nah man, that's not fucking good enough. Guess Jaskier's not a hot woman so we can't have Gerlat too involved in his emotional relationship with him. And don't get me wrong, this is not a shot against Yennefer, Yennefer is great. She does in fact have proper chemistry with Jaskier! She is probably my second favourite character! What I do see as a problem is that clearly someone among the writers, whoever it was, decided that that platonic relationships between adults are just irrelevent. Can't have that, no one cares, let's focus more on the sexual brooding. Even Yennefer and Jaskier's relationship, which is really good btw I love that episode, gets pushed away as soon as soon as Geralt is in the picture again. It feels like the only reason Jaskier is at Kaer Morhen is cause... you know. He's Jaskier. You can't just write him out entirely. But at no point does it feel like anyone really wants him there, which would also be fine if that was a plotpoint, but it's not. He's just kinda there. Until he isn't for a season cliffhanger. He's just hanging around, pretending that Geralt actually had a reason to take him along, be that emotional or practical, neither of which I can discern. Let's be honest, Jaskier did not make Ciri safer in accompanying her there. The fact that he got tortured never comes up, despite Yennefer having seen it. No one ever tries to engage with him there. It's honestly painful to watch how he's basically just a prop at this point.
And you know, maybe season 3 will pick it up! Maybe he finally gets to be somewhat vindicated in his feelings! Maybe someone actually apologizes to him for once! But frankly it doesn't feel like that was a deliberate characterization in season 2 that will be played on in the next one, so I'm just putting it off longer and longer because while I am interested and I'm sure there are good parts (season 2 had great parts honestly before that turn), I also don't want to watch my favourite character be treated like a joke again in a way that hits too close to home for me personally.
#am i too grumpy about this?#probably#but man I am sick about my faves getting emotionally shafted#somehow they always end up as the butt of the joke#i did hear that song that seems to be from s3 which sounds nice#i did hear they finally committed to bi jaskier#so i'm sure i eventually will just get it over with#but man#i am kinda dreading risking it#that fact that I've not seen almost any fics on ao3 that seem to pick up on s3 doesn't excatly seem encouraging either#that said this is absolutely whinging#so don't take it too seriosuly#yeah anyway jaskier and yennefer being sarcastic at each other while saving each other's lives is in the fact best part of this entire show

a rly underrated thing about crazy ex girlfriend imo is that it's one of the rare shows i know of that really spends time on exploring what the process of having children is like for queer ppl/for those who go about it "non-normatively". it's not even rly a main storyline but i still find it rly well-handled and touching.
#idk i feel like in the general consciousness (deciding to) having kids as a queer person is either treated as impossible#(which is true to an extent in some jurisdictions tbf - at least if you want the legal status of parents)#or is imo way oversimplified#like yeah most ppl know ivf is A Fucking Process but many ppl still seem to underestimate iui for example#or there's an assumption that all couples with no sperm between them choose to use a sperm bank and that that process is easy#and doesn't require any reflection (which it isn't and it does)#or that if you choose to go with a known donor finding a donor is an easy process (which it also rly isn't)#or for couples where no one can get pregnant that surrogacy goes without saying (in addition to the fact that surrogacy is banned#in Many Places where other MAR techniques aren't#finding a surrogate is also orders of magnitude more difficult than finding a gamete donor)#or that adoption is an obvious solution - idk if those ppl know any gay couples who are trying to adopt but i do#they've been in the process for SIX psychologically excruciating years and it will likely be another year before they actually have a child#and that's for white college-educated materially comfortable ppl#and idk but cxg does a rly good job with the storyline - from Darryl and White Josh's disagreement about whether to have kids#to Darryl's decision to have a kid alone#to him asking Heather and Rebecca for help with that process#to the fact that Heather and Rebecca's feelings about Hebecca are v realistic and nuanced atm#not at all maternal bc that's never what they wanted or planned for (being a mother to this child) but also not indifferent#for example the 'hello nice to meet you' reprise - i legit think that's the only time i've ever seen a known donor's attitude and feelings#about the child they helped create but in no way consider 'theirs' being explored. even in thirty seconds.#or even just the fact that Darryl is a lawyer and requests help from both a gamete donor and a gestational carrier - yes!#as far as i understand in the us 'surrogacy' (one person being pregnant with their own ovule) gives the pregnant person legal parental stat#and thus requires giving up those rights and sometimes adoption after birth#while 'splitting things up' between a donor and a carrier also cuts through that 'biological' link for the purposes of legal recognition#i might be wrong in my understanding of this but if not it's cool to see it handled realistically including wrt how the legal consequences#influences decisions about which choices you make#reproduction cw#children cw#adoption cw

I know useless yearning is my brand™ but it would be nice if I fell for someone who's actually interested for once
#i mean I don't KNOW but like.#i do not believe she's dumb#I think she has the capacity to have figured out I have feelings for her#in which case the reason she hasn't responded at all is either that she's nervous about it (doesn't seem so) or more likely isn't intereste#which#yknow#just sucks a bit#I still love hanging out with her regardless but like#it would be nice yknow?#ah well#she's only ever had one love before and our mutual wife is very strong on the initiative so perhaps she IS unsure#or yknow it hasn't even occurred to her to think of anyone else that way at present#idfk. I'm tired it's been a rough day.#she took care of me a lot today while I was very sick and that has only stoked my feelings#idfk#i'm getting depressed I should get to bed#eilooxology#in which xara is gay

it's literally such a nothing issue, but i think that's why that night club poll from last night struck a nerve. like, people don't avoid clubs and fancy restaurants because they're boring, they either can't or just have no interest in it
#ive said it a million times but i live in the sticks and don't drive#the nearest city is 30 minutes away by car but there's no clubs there either just a few nice bars and cafés#and the nearest 'fancy' restaurant is olive garden and the 99 and they're just as far away#in town all we have is a mcdonalds a ymca a park and a rite aid. that's it! that's our Going Out options#also like. covid is still very much a thing#just because you're vaccinated that doesn't make you immune#and you still spread it to other people#which a lot of people seem to forget#again those kind of posts are not an issue at all its just irksome lol#like i'm not boring im just broke and don't live the city okay?? 😭#mickey.txt

I'm soo normal I'm so great and handling other people's opinions on my favourite characters
#Okay Ive gotten a LOT better at it being in the dr fandom where everyone has strong opinions in wildly different directions#but im still an anxious guy who gets rsd ok....#I was listening to an interview of Gundham's english VA and having a great time because he just seems like a nice guy#and I really really love when the DR VAs like their characters and DR. it makes me so happy#but anyways. He said he didn't really like Gonta which was like a bullet to my brain gdhskfjdsf#He talked about a few other characters he didnt really like and I get the feeling he just doesn't like characters who are kinda anxious#or show a lot of weakness?#he didnt like shuichi or kiibo either#which like. honestly fair#Gundham fans often like Gonta too but not for That reason#but it caught me so off guard i was washing the dishes and I had to stop for a second#just to be like ''dont take it personally dont take it personally dont take it personally'#im getting out of it now but. WAH.#shut up me

i'm so bummed i accidentally turned town a job interview for a job where I could have worked with a good friend and mentor 😔
#i was telling her abt the preschool i got hired at and i was like yeah im worried bc the other teacher doesn't seem nice#and the student teacher ratio is really bad they're really understaffed and underfunded im just really worried it will be too much for me#and she was like oh you should apply to the school i work at bc we're hiring snd the ratio is great and the pay might be better also#and i never knew the name of the school she worked at until then#and its one i DID apply to but i told them nevermind after this one hired me 😬#but now i really wish i'd taken that interview#i'm going to call or email first thing on monday tho and hopefullyyy i can get in for an interview before i start my new job on thursday#so i wont literally have to take time off for it#and then if they offer me i will be able to tell the new job nevermind while its still early#either that or i'll try to stick it out a few months then apply to the other one for summer or something#but im not sure whether its best to quit immediately or let them think im dependable and staying then leave in three months lol#but mostly for the other job idk if it would ruin the opportunity to tell them nevermind i want the job a week after i said no#compared to a few months later#they might have forgotten me by then which would probably be good#idkkk#my first reference literally works there which will hopefully help and maybe they'll give me a break#the pay scale looks the same as the one i just accepted but i think they'll offer less bc they're not as desperate#but i literally dont care its such a better working environment#and the pay scale is the same so they would give me a raise after a few months#and the work will be so much easier#and the commute#and i Definitely know i can work with my friend#vs the co teacher at this new job who seems really intense and unfriendly#anyway!!#im really anxious abt this new job and i'll stay if the other place wont take me now#but i really hope they give me another chance#also its super close and easy drive and the commute for the other one scares me a bit lol#this has been a shitpost

some things I noticed in the new totk trailer that I haven't seen talked about
I'm pretty sure that's going to be gleeok or some type of new spelling of the classic boss. I also suspect that it will either be a over world boss like hinoxes are, or it's going to be a specialty type of boss connected to specific quests, main or side. One hope I have is for elemental varieties of it as I think that could pose a really fun challenge.
I think it's likely that part of Death Mountain is going to break off, allowing us to enter into the depths of the volcano and perhaps even find a temple or whatever the equivalent will be for temples. Either that or a very large cave system that has possible story connections, as we do see in other parts of the trailer where it appears that Death Mountain is now spewing malice (as can be seen in the earlier picture of gleerok.)
So like, I can't take a picture of sound, but early in the trailer during this segment it clearly sounds like they're in some form of echoing chamber as the bokoblin hits the ore; which leads me to suspect that this particular area may be a segment of the underneath of Hyrule that we will get to explore.
And redeads have returned! They seem to be modelled after the ones found in oot, but I would also love to see some variants around Hyrule, like frozen ones that leave you in ice once they let go, or ones that constantly on fire in the hotter areas of Death Mountain. I'd also think it'd be fun if we could have a side quest that allows us to find a "secret chamber" hidden within the Kakariko village cemetery.
extra speculations under the cut
Some things I speculate:
That at some point, you as Link will trigger separate story events that causes the labyrinths to rise into the sky, probably in relation to quests to unlock new abilities not directly related to the master sword (like the champion's abilities for example.)
I suspect that we will restore the master sword like we do in past games, either with a sacred flame from each of the springs like in ss (the most likely case,) or uncovering lost ancient temples and inserting the sword into an alter like in ww.
Weapon restoration. Although maybe that's more of a hope. I also would like the option to be able to purchase weapons from merchants, not just arrows.
I also suspect, that like ss, Link is going to be chasing after Zelda for a portion of the game, probably after their fall. Although instead of being with Impa, that Zelda instead will be travelling with an avatar for the being we've seen in the cave carvings.
Purely speculation with no real evidence, but I suspect that green hand we see belonged to the previous hero who initially sealed up mummified Ganondorf.
More voice acting. It was pretty well received, and we now have heard Ganondorf (presumably, I saw someone on reddit suggest it may be Demise speaking in the trailer which would be quite fun tbh.) So I think it may be likely to see more cut scenes this time around with voice acting.
I. Want. Tingle. He would be perfect to add in now that there's sky travel, and perhaps like Majora's Mask, you need to buy map segments from him in order to expand your map of the sky.
#loz#loz totk#totk#totk spoilers#I'm very excited for this game#and what is going to happen in it#it's clear there's a heavy connection to ss#so I do wonder if we're going to get another round of Link chasing Zelda around the world to try and save her#meanwhile Zelda is preparing to sacrifice herself to keep Demise sealed#I've never seen anyone bring it up before but now I'm curious if theres an area in botw that could be considered the future sealing grounds#the forgotten temple doesn't quite seem like it to me personally but I haven't compared either's designs to see#but it also is the only location I can think of#which would be nice to see that spot get utilized more#oh no here I go speculating in the tags

Black trans women: hey uhhhhh this space is not safe for me like at all
Black trans men: yeah I agree and it's really not good to me either
Black cis women: oh man don't even get me started, this place is so dangerous for me
Black cis men: for sure, and it feels like it's hunting season for me
Black gnc people: no kidding, and it feels like it's only getting worse
Black nonbinary people: and if people decide to acknowledge I exist (which is rare) it's specifically to hurt me
Black people everywhere: the world is so aggressive towards me, and it just doesn't seem like there's any escape from it, and it would be nice if someone listened to us for once instead of just using us as gotchas and free labour
Nonblack people: hmm. Well that doesn't align with my personal worldview or political opinion, so I'm going to disregard it AND be racist to you about it

It's not enough to write about Miyani and Zommoros anymore; we have to make them into OOAK Monster High doll repaints
#a funny#years ago we bought a bundle of used dolls off eBay. like over a decade ago#Miyani has two options; a Cleo de Nile doll and a Clawdeen doll#it might ultimately depend on which doll has the closest skin tone. not against trying to rehair Cleo if it comes down to it#Zommoros on the other hand...#we currently have a Gil doll but#that would require adding an extra set of arms (which we feel confident doing) and probably removing the entire legs#or we could try buying a Kali doll and try to reshape the torso into a more masculine shape (less confident)#mainly because Zommoros has a decently wide torso + shoulders and from what we can tell Kali has a joint in the chest#so working around that and the arms seems tricky#the nice thing about maybe using Gil is that the extra arms would make him taller than Miyani#we also had the idea of using a Bratz Mini doll for Miyani to really sell the height difference lol#but that might be too much of a height difference ironically#and also the mini doesn't have the same poseability as a monster high doll#oh yeah Cleo is also missing half an arm so either way she's going to have to have some repainting done on whether replacement we give her#Clawdeen would require the least work honestly. the ears shouldn't be too hard to remove#but we'll check what the face shapes are like too#it's 6am lol
