okay i thought of this like weeks ago, made it last week, but havent brought myself to post it til now
Also let's keep in mind that i've only seen like 6 sentai...and only finished 2 of them..So i might not have any clue what I'm talking about when I show you the below picture, because I'm working primarily off of Wikipedia summaries.
Tumblr media
For slightly further explanation:
The sentai is the job = having superpowers and getting paid for them. most are about getting hired to be a warrior, especially early on, but I've also included ones where you basically make your own money through the powers (Gokaiger, Kyuranger, Lupinranger.)
The sentai is a 2nd job = primarily adults who would be focusing on their main work if they weren't also called to defend the world against evil or whatever. Usually unpaid, but I only learned last week that the inspiration for this tierlist (Boonboomger) literally has Mira say that being a Boonboomger(/working for the delivery service) is her second job, so I put them here even though they originally were in the first tier. This category is primarily about the drudgery and annoyance of having to work a second job, even if it's something as noble as guarding the Earth (or Japan or your town or whatever) from fuckheads
What's a job? = originally for teams comprised of people who aren't (and shouldn't) be in the job market, whether due to their age or due to their upbringing/place of birth, it's also a bit of a catchall category for teams mostly comprised of jobless/unpaid members.
ALSO I'm only working off initial team formations, aka whoever was in the first ep. If it's a three person team that eventually becomes five, i'm going off of the circumstances of the first three members, and only for how they were during the events of the show (so all the 10 years after, 20 years after, etc don't count in the eyes of this tierlist)
If you have further insight as to which category any of these teams SHOULD be in, please feel free to let me know! There's literally over 48 years of television shoved into a single image, I'm definitely not gonna know the ins and outs of various characters' circumstances. I would not be against redoing this.
Specific reasons why (i think) each team is in each category below the cut.
Gorenger - Originally hired by The Earth Guard League, these members survive a terrorist attack that kills every other member, before they are recruited to become the Gorengers. Verdict: The sentai is the job
JAKQ - Hired to become cyborgs, the JAKQ team fights against Crime's dastardly deeds and villains. Verdict: The sentai is the job
Battle Fever - Recruited to fight Egos. Verdict: The sentai is the job
Denjimen - Wikipedia says these five may or may not be related to the Denji people (aka the people who all died in the prologue to this series) so essentially they're randos, who all have other jobs according to the wiki, who have been called to defend earth. By a robot dog? Verdict: The Sentai is a 2nd job
Sun Vulcan - wait a sec this is a direct sequel to Denjimen? huh?! anyways these guys are already elite crime fighter-types who are recruited to become even more elite crime fighter-types. Against solar crime! anyways. Verdict: The sentai is the job
Goggle V - Theyre just randos who are also called to save the world by Dr. Hongo. I don't always take '[character x] used to be [occupation y]' as direct confirmation of the second category (especially as all of the previous ones have that) but since these guys clearly weren't doing a lateral job move/promotion, I think it's safe to say Verdict: The sentai is a 2nd job
Dynaman - Literally the plot summary is that they're all inventors, working on other stuff, but they've been forced to work together ot stop the Jashinka empire. Verdict: The sentai is a 2nd job
Bioman - What is with aliens leaving shit for future earth generations to clean up? Naw im kidding, every human in history does that. anywho looks like all of them have other jobs that they could be doing if they didn't have to drop things at the last minute to go be biomen. Verdict: The sentai is a 2nd job
Changemen - Military people become super sentai members. A tale as old as the incarnation of sentai. Verdict: The sentai is the job
Flashman - The unfortunate thing is these five young people were kidnapped as infants to space and though they survived, they ultimately must continue to fight against the threat that initially hurt them, even as they search for their biological parents. the good thing is that these guys probably don't know jack shit about the horrors of capitalism. Congrats to my very first team of Verdict: What's a job?
Maskman - These guys do not seem to be getting paid for all the training effort they have to do to fight off Tube. They had to spend a year getting ready to fight them and it does not seem like Sugata paid them (except for Takeru and Kenta and that was for their racing related abilities, not the martial arts.) While training for a martial art can be a lifelong task…yeah i'm just putting them in Verdict: The sentai is a 2nd job
Liveman - We finally come to the first sentai i've personally watched! (have yet to finish but i am really fond of this series!) That being said, everyone seems way too young and unemployed to care about having a job. (How do they pay for stuff? I dunno man but I think theyre just squatting on academia island.) Verdict: What's a job?
Turboranger - Wikipedia is telling me they are children, and i believe children should not be forced into labour. (also is this the first sentai with all child members? i know some of the other teams have had young members before, but this is the first one that says that they're all minors) Verdict: What's a job?
Fiveman - They are all siblings and they are all teachers! That's kinda fun. It's too bad teachers are unappreciated (hopefully they're not as underpaid in japan?) Verdict: The sentai is a 2nd job
Jetman - Ryu was hired to be a jetman, Kaori is an heiress (not a real job), Ako is in high school and Gai seemingly has no job other than to be gay as fuck. Raita is the only one with anything close to a dayjob. Not enough sway for either of the first two categories. Verdict: What's a job?
Zyuranger - Ancient civilization guys who wake up after suspended animation? They surely do not have jobs. Verdict: What's a job?
Dairanger - This is tough because on the one hand they seem very young. But some of them appear to have jobs. But also I wish they didn't have a job. Verdict: The sentai is a 2nd job
Kakuranger - I mentioned earlier that training for a martial art can be a lifelong task without clarifying whether or not that counts as a job. Primarily this silly little tierlist is about work as paid labour, and whether or not the sentai counts as that or if its members are willing to engage with that aspect of capital. it might just be me overhyping/fantasizing about this, but to me continuing a martial arts style is like preserving a language; it's noble and important and should be done, but capital doesn't always see it as something with monetary value. It's just something that someone feels must be done or something one is forced into. (Just like being part of a sentai team.) Anyways that's a longwinded way of saying Verdict: What's a job?
ohranger - More military guys become super sentai members. Verdict: The sentai is the job
Carranger - What if you went to work and there was an alien who wanted to give you and your coworkers another job? Verdict: The sentai is a 2nd job
Megaranger - More children! Verdict: What's a job?
Gingaman - Members of a tribe willingly hidden from the modern world. (or at least that's what I'm getting from the wiki.) I think they should be allowed to not work. as a treat. Verdict: What's a job?
GoGoFive - Genuinely wonder what emergency services personnel outside of this family think of them. Literally all five siblings working to save lives? Wonder what kinda drama that leads to. Verdict: The sentai is a 2nd job
Timeranger - Man I feel bad for this Tatsuya guy! What are you supposed to say when future cops force you to help them out with current future crimes? Verdict: The sentai is the job
Gaoranger - Literally the wiki page just says "Kai Samezu was UNEMPLOYED before he was chosen to become Gao Shark" which I think is kinda fucked up. But anyways, since everyone else also had to abandon their lives (and their jobs) to be Gaorangers; Verdict: The sentai is a 2nd job
Hurricangers - These guys are ninjas who don't want to be ninjas, but are forced to be ninjas anyways. Based solely on the main series (and also just the ninjas.) Verdict: What's a job?
Abaranger - The wikipedia page says: Yukito Sanjyo (三条 幸人, Sanjō Yukito): A 21-year-old chiropractor from Sapporo who initially became Abare Blue (アバレブルー, Abare Burū) for the money there is no other mention of payment, getting paid or having a job that I can see (other than Abarekiller formerly being a doctor) Verdict: The sentai is the job (?)
Dekaranger - Dekaranger is another entry in the modern iteration of military guys become sentai members, which is cops/emergency personnel become sentai members. There could be something interesting about ideas of justice and who is capable/allowed to mete out justice in a more serious analysis of this that i don't currently have the ability to do myself. but maybe one day. (Also even this light hearted analysis is primarily focused on paid and unpaid labour so. another tangent for a different day) Verdict: The sentai is the job
Magiranger - Wikipedia says nothing about their jobs, only noting that the red leader is the youngest sibling in high school. My guess is that they're too busy being magicians to have jobs. so by default Verdict: What's a job?
Boukenger - A private company has their own special team to deal with some bad guys who want to capture powerful items called Previous. Verdict: The sentai is the job
Gekiranger - What if you went to your work and there was a weird cat who wanted you to give you and your coworker and some guy who was raised by tigers a second job? (2/3 wins) Verdict: The sentai is a 2nd job
Go-onger - Everyone had to leave their old jobs to become Gon-ongers, so to me that means Verdict: The sentai is a 2nd job
Shinkenger - Vassals get paid, right? Right?! Verdict: The sentai is the job
Goseiger - They're literal angels and they shouldn't have to work. Verdict: What's a job?
Gokaiger - They're pirates first and foremost. Stealing shit and fighting people is part of the job. Verdict: The sentai is the job
Go-Busters - The sentai is the job. They've been training like 13 years for this. They do not get to have regular lives and regular jobs after having their lives changed like this. Verdict: The sentai is the job
Kyoryuger - Daigo, Souji and Amy don't work, so just barely with 3/5, Verdict: What's a job?
Tokkyuger - If you know, you know. Verdict: What's a job?
Ninninger - team of mostly students/ninjas. Verdict: What's a job?
Zyohger - Team of mostly literal animals. Verdict: What's a job?
Kyuranger - Rebels against empire. Verdict: The sentai is the job
Lupinranger vs Patranger - Cops as sentai is old hat. Thieves as sentai? They should do it again. for me. Also cafe work is just a cover anyways. Verdict: The sentai is the job
Ryusoulger - Just like the Gingaman, if you don't have to interact with capitalism, you shouldn't. Verdict: What's a job?
Kirameiger - Allegedly CARAT was made to fight Yodonheim so. Verdict: The sentai is the job
Zenkaiger - The zenkaigers have human forms? Fucked up. Anyways, apparently some of them work at Colorful, and Vroom did have a job before he defected but he had to defect so he's not going back there. Anyways these guys don't have jobs are you kidding me. Verdict: What's a job?
Donbrothers - It's a second job, but just barely. Momoi's a deliveryman, Kijino's a consultant? and Tsubasa would be an actor. 3/5's enough for me. Verdict: The sentai is a 2nd job
Kingohger - When you become a king for real, they just give you a sword and a cool giant bug. Verdict: The sentai is the job
Boonboomger - As Mira said, it's a second job. She and definitely Jou have other
In conclusion, thanks for reading all of this fucking text oh my god, and remember: stealing and rebelling against empire are real jobs, being an heiress is not

six sentences sunday
The slack, peaceful expression of Zhao Yunlan asleep, his body curled toward the main room. That instinctive way he reached for Shen Wei, patting along his shoulder for his forearm, for his wrist. Even just earlier that night, sitting in companionable quiet on the couch, Zhao Yunlan’s hand tapping along the leather until it found Shen Wei’s ankle and settled there, skin against skin. As if Zhao Yunlan had gotten used to it too, touching. Their bodies as close as their lives were tangled now. Shen Wei would miss every piece of it.
haha. hurting my own feelings in the down draft of the answer fic! i was initially worried i wouldn't have enough thoughts about that gap between the knife scene and the next scene to write a whole fic about it, but it's starting to seem that the solution is simply: cramming in as much domestic weilan flashback as narratively possible :3

I'm just thinking about Tindómiel's and Arwen's names again.
As I've mentioned before, Tindómiel's name seems a clear reference to tindómë, the Quenya word for the twilight of the morning or dawn, by contrast to undómë, the evening twilight referenced in Arwen's name Undómiel or Evenstar. The distinction between tindómë and undómë comes from LOTR itself, so it's not the relic of an early draft or a late retcon or anything.
If Undómiel = evening star (as it clearly does), it would seem to follow that the counterpart name Tindómiel would translate as 'morning star.'
People sometimes suggest that the meaning of Tindómiel mirrors Tinúviel rather than Undómiel. I don't think that works as well given the information in LOTR, though, because while Quenya tindómë and Sindarin tinnú are related etymologically, tinnú refers to evening twilight/early night, like undómë (in Sindarin, morning twilight is minuial). Hence the poetic translation of Tinúviel as 'nightingale.' So if either Undómiel or Tindómiel were going to be equivalent in meaning to Tinúviel, it should be Undómiel. That would even fit well enough with the frequent comparisons of Arwen to Lúthien.
But Undómiel is not translated that way in LOTR. It is translated as 'evening star.' Given the identical structures of the cousins' names and the nuances of Elvish terms for twilight in both languages, it seems more likely to me that post-LOTR, Tindómiel is meant to be a counterpart name to Undómiel, and that in-story, Arwen was named for Elrond's niece.
Tangentially, I think Tindómiel herself was likely named for her grandfather Eärendil, the morning star. But on the meta level, the subtext of her name's structure and meaning is to mirror Arwen. Tindómiel is born as the first of the mortal princesses and queens of the Númenóreans, where the death of Arwen, queen of the last Númenóreans, closes out the era of the Elves.
At the same time, while the evening and morning stars symbolically represent the inverse of each other, the reality is that the evening star is the morning star. Eärendil was hailed on Valinor as the "star in the darkness, jewel of the sunset, radiant in the morning." So both granddaughters' names call back to him and to each other, which I find very touching, actually.
I find it all the more so, though, because while we don't have any dates for Tindómiel's life, we know that she must have been born some time after the year 61 of the Second Age, since she is the second child and that's when her older brother was born. If her lifespan is similar to her brother's, she would live around 410 years—perhaps a little more, as Númenórean women were typically longer-lived, but I can't think by too much at that point in time, given the 500-year lifespan of their father. Tindómiel was likely dead by the year 500 of the Second Age.
The Second Age would last until the year 3441, another 2,941 years. Over a hundred more years passed before Elrond and Celebrían's marriage, and over a hundred more until Arwen's birth in the year 241 of the Third Age. By the time she was named, Tindómiel had been dead for over three thousand years. Elrond had seen the final wars against Morgoth, the rise and terrible fall of Númenor, the provisional defeat of Sauron, and innumerable nephews and nieces. Tolkien can't even fit the early house of Elros onto one genealogical chart and by Arwen's birth, there are numerous offshoots of Elendil's line alone. Elrond has seen a lot of people come and go, many of them related to him.
And yet, when it came time to name his only daughter, he thought of Tindómiel.

HAL Laboratory really enjoys their attack moveset symbolism, huh?
Just to preface this, major spoilers for the ending of Magolor Epilogue below the cut!
A week or so back, while playing Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe, I had finally beaten Magolor and (perhaps against my better judgment) proceeded to play through the entirety of the Magolor Epilogue gamemode in one sitting. But hey, it paid off, as the revelation of the Master Crown was INCREDIBLE and the ending was sweet. Though, during that fight against the Master Crown, a very particular attack stood out to me the moment I saw it. From there, I began to notice more and more little details, and thus, I think that the Master Crown and Marx are more connected than we thought.
The attack I’m talking about, of course, is the one where it drops small seed-shaped gems and sprouts twisted vines to try and impale you. Sound familiar?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As far as I can recall, these two are the only ones to have an attack like this. Now, as mentioned by the title, Kirby bosses are very often hinted to have some sort of a connection just through attack patterns. The Soul bosses for instance, with their movesets sampled from each other.
Soul bosses… hey, didn’t Void Termina also share an attack with Marx?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, didn’t Void Termina summon a replica of the Master Crown for one of its own attacks?
Tumblr media
Also, partially unrelated, but in the image above, the wings on the crown are that of a dragon, but during the Master Crown’s fight in Magolor Epilogue they appear to be more bird-like. Just something I thought was a little interesting.
Tumblr media
Moving on, after the vine attack cued me in, I began to pick up on some other details. Another big one is the Master Crown’s WINGS. During the attack where it shoots sharp leaves at you, it rapidly changes color. Much like our favorite Cosmic Jester.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hm, now that I mention it, while his didn’t change color, Void Termina’s wings share a resemblance to Marx’s with their geometric pattern, too. But, I suppose that’s old news.
Another little thing I noticed was the shape of the leaves that the Master Crown shoots out. I know, this might be a bit of a stretch, but they’re shaped like spades. Much like the tip of a certain someone’s wings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of those wings, I think that just in general they share a resemblance to Marx’s. Something about the way they’re shaped…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not to mention, of course, how both are golden (though his Smash Brothers render is… less so).
Speaking of those wings again, the offshoots of the wing branch strike me as interesting as well. The way they curl… almost reminds me of something else.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Marx Soul amulet! Not only that, but the shape is similar to Marx Soul’s alulas(?) as well!
Tumblr media
I suppose these two were always connected in some form (Marx is connected to Galactic Nova, Galactic Nova is connected to the Ancients, the Ancients are connected to the Master Crown…) but to finally see an actual clear relation between them is very nice! With just how many things this one jester is linked to, I wouldn’t be surprised if the games were building up to something with him… But that’s just wishful thinking!

Do ya have any tips on character design and fashion? Like how to make them stand out, or fit with a style, etc etc
Mmm yeah I guess… they’re kinda basic tho lol ^^”
When it comes to fashion I think it helps if you know a specific named style that you’re going for like lolita or cyberpunk, but if you’re unsure then you should think about the setting the character will be in, what’s their job/purpose, etc and go from there. Then look up references for said style (I personally like to use Pinterest).
And the great thing about character design is that none of it has to be realistic so don’t be hesitant to accessorize and put them in more wacky, trendy hairstyles and clothing. Usually my main goal when designing character outfits is to convey hints about the character’s personality or job through them so I rely a lot on symbols or personal affects.
Another thing I do is use shape language. Like say for example if the character is meant to be really strong or prickly I usually make their silhouette more bulky on top and include a lot of triangular shapes in their designs to convey that. As for color - if you’re a beginner you can always use the tried and true method of Pokémon color typing lmao and once you’ve got the grasp of that you can play around with it! :) Oh and don’t forget posing is also important when displaying your character!! I’m not saying that you have to do dynamic complicated poses every time but focus more on their posture like open body language vs tense shoulders.
But that’s how I do it I hope this helps you out! Here’s a breakdown of my recent oc work as example :D

I'm not a webcomic reader, just looked through it so I have a question: are there any differences between manga Garou and wc Garou when it comes to their features of character and not the plot lines?
So their fundamental core characters are the same, but the real estate allotted to his character + his relationships with others have all expanded, which means so have the circumstances, set-up, and presentation of what happens to his character have all changed to be different from the wc's trajectory too.
The biggest difference is that manga Garou's hero side has been made much more explicitly clear (likely even for his future path) - repeatedly spelled out (handheld) in our faces even, compared to more of the subtlety/mystery/ambiguity of his char's identity in the wc. How far will he go to maintain the ‘monster’ act while denying who he really is? ONE chose not to hide his softer 'antihero' true nature to only be revealed/exposed -to him and us- at the end anymore (as wc readers would already know 'the twist'), but further humanized him along the way, into more of a well-rounded, fully realized character who earns more of the (upgraded) sympathetic 'protagonist' spotlight during his arc. Where manga Garou's allowed to express the full 3-dimensional range of the emotional spectrum. From the cool and badass moments, to the fun and silly (he gets to be a nerd! and a goof!), to the tragic and triumphant, to the genuinely heartwarming and heartbreaking. All 0-100 and back. Compared to his more limited range in the wc, where those same traits were still there, just not as pronounced or explored. (Where now we have far more expanded information on Garou and his past lore/history, compared to even Saitama or Genos. :O And that's saying something.)
ONE has capitalized on his 'gap moe' appeal that Japanese readers love and have always seen as cute/endearing about him. So manga Garou behaves much more obviously/classically tsundere, to full comedic, ironic, and endearing effect. And for physical traits, he gets to keep his facial scar and defining 'wolf hair' in the post-arc, that wc Garou did not.
His relationships with Tareo & Bang have greatly expanded. (He also never interacted with Metal Bat in the wc either.) Wc Tareo used to be a stranger ugly kid who wasn't even named. Wc Garou still went out of his way to save him, but not to the same extent or established context of their friendship in the manga. Wc Tareo's favorite hero/role model used to be Child Emperor, but that has been completely removed for Tareo seeing Garou has his coolest/Greatest Hero instead. :')) While Tareo's importance to Garou - both for his char development and as his grounding, emotional anchor to his humanity, has become far more thematically emphasized. Wc Bang and Garou's relationship was quite lacking and never got the closure (or chance to reconcile) that they deserved. :') While in the manga it's portrayed as more of an estranged father-son relationship, where both sides yearn to reconnect what was broken, and Garou deep-down craves for Bang's actual support & validation for once. The way ONE decided to actually give him that in the end (more of the emotional support from Bang he needs, for the chance to heal and be happier) over his continued alienation alone as a fugitive in the wc, is such a significant change (hope vs uncertainty, suffering, hardship) feeling like the actual ‘blessing’ from god-ONE leaving off on a far more positive/healthy note.
But cause ONE was dead-set on presenting manga Garou as a (conflicted, misguided) 'good guy' who's clearly heroic/pure of heart (who's likely to remain involved in the plot or to become a hero in the future), displayed at his strongest when he chooses to ‘follow his heart’ putting everything else aside to save Bang & Tareo, that meant for him to still do anything morally questionable or believably 'evil’ in contrast, several compromises and tradeoffs had to be made. Mainly, as his character was set up, he could no longer actually do those 'bad' things as Himself anymore - THAT became the biggest divergence.
As wc Garou's agency/awareness of his own actions was never called into question; he did everything consciously alert under his own power. :O He was still confused of the changes happening to him for sure (also his hair literally turned into horns with a completely different ‘monster’ design), while figuring out what he wants as he goes - venting all his motivations in his verbose speeches at the end, but he still pressed on with a purpose. He never showed signs of feral 'sleep-walking,' doing things unknowingly/accidentally, or idle susceptibility to having his choice/control removed or taken from him. The fact wc Garou's most brutal attacks on the heroes were given to the monster cadres instead, and that manga Garou never fought/humbled the entire S Class, but needed to be literally unconscious (vs Darkshine and Bang) or forcibly corrupted under the influence (against his will & understanding) for anything 'bad' to happen says a lot. As that change actually removes much of manga Garou's culpability and muddles his actual accountability. (If ONE wants to explore the new in-universe ambiguity of that drama during his 'rehabilitation' later.) Especially when manga Garou became a trapped victim to god's True Evil cosmic mindrape (and takes all the blame upon himself for being weak, even for refusing/resisting/enduring that trauma as a survivor....now that's horrifically unfair.)
Wc Garou purposely leaving the heroes he fought alive, never wanting to kill a human, was a defining 'soft' trait (retaining his humanity) and mark of the moral line he refused to cross. This was so important to uphold, despite how 'evil' and vicious his (performative) actions appeared to be. Which was also consistent with manga Garou (as Himself) for the entire time he kept up the act too, until the inserted god thing completely threw that out the window, forcibly taking the choice away from him (as it was impossible in manga Garou’s nature to do this otherwise), in the most grievous 180 violation departure of his char to anyone who actually knows him (Bang, Blast, and later Saitama all recognized this Wasn't Him despite his claims), for the full shock of the trope 'ooc is serious business' to be put into play for real - as Saitama failed to take him seriously, with doomed repercussions for everybody. D: Even canon itself agreed this development never should have happened.
Saitama vs Garou went completely differently (no one died, the battle was localized and contained to martial arts skills only without any portal/space/nuclear/time superpowers, several heroes were still conscious to witness Saitama’s strength, everyone but Saitama wanted to execute Garou, etc), that I recommend you see the wc for yourself to understand all the differences and controversies, or even just to feel how the ‘vibe’ changed. Wc Garou being one-sidedly beaten with his whole ideology deconstructed and broken til he loses the will to live (til he’s saved by Tareo) was certainly something. And him becoming suicidal in the manga was also played with, but if there’s one feature I’m proud of manga Garou for, is that even after being physically beaten and suffering the horrific (sobering & distraught) realization he accidentally killed Tareo (!!!!)....he still resolved to reach out with the leading plan to help save the world (choosing to take action and sacrifice himself as a hero), vs wc Garou who lost his sense of purpose and no longer knew what to do. :’)) Manga Garou’s core motivations were also not totally broken in the reverted timeline either, so his unresolved feelings will likely remain valid & relevant in the events coming forward.

The dress in the drawing is a feresi, a Karelian women's dress that consists of a shirt, dress with suspenders and an apron. The details and colors are quite free for the maker of the feresi to choose (my mom for example has a bright pink apron with colorful lace). Usual prints or patterns for the fabric are small flowers and plaid.

Not Sascha is back! Why is she so creepy and why does no one notice, ahhhh
Also Michael. Hm. A lot happened here. Almost all of it unhelpful.
Okay no.
Theory time.
Michael seems to be the "owner" of the creepy hallways, and given the way he spoke about having no identity etc I feel I can make a stab in the dark that he's one of those fear avatars everyone keeps talking about. (This is one of the only things I knew about the podcast coming in, that there is some sort of fear categories?? With fear 'avatars' I guess?)
So I suppose these avatars are people shaped representations of fear. Cool Cool cool. Take a hike with your Fear of Heights! Have a beer with your Fear of the Dark! Take your panic to the disco!
That is a really cool concept, hands down.
No idea what Michael is the fear avatar of, though, fear of creepy dark hallways? Isolation? Basements? Getting lost? Whichever it is, he can freely access the archives and stab the workers, so that's cool. Makes the whole place feel extra safe after the worm infestation a few weeks ago.
The things he said were interesting though, and we do love Jon for asking the creepy guy with a knife questions before calling for help, or an ambulance. I wish Jon had called for Sascha though, imagine Not-Sascha coming face to face with Michael like "who the hell are you" and Micheal going "You're not the chick I saved" and Jon going "??? What the hell does that mean!" And Not-Sascha going "No wait I totally recognise him! Evil Michael!" and Michael yelling "No you don't, I have no idea who you are!" and Jon going "I am experiencing severe symptoms of bloodloss!"
Anyway, that didn't happen, so instead Michael gave us information: He said Not-Sascha is lying to Jon, which is weird, because I don't think anything she said was outright wrong? Either way, that means they're probably not working together, otherwise Michael wouldn't call out his own... agent, or whatever.
Secondly, he informs us that there is a war?? So the different fear categories are fighting each other? What for? And why is the institute relevant for that? If all the objects in the archives have something to do with the fears, are they having "Night in the Museum"-level battles in the storage rooms after dark? if not, why not? Are the fear avatars all after the items in the archives?
We know a bunch of people are fighting, who are presumably the fear avatars, and for some reason the Institute is relevant for this. Hm.
Last point: Since ol' Mikey here is associated with creepy tunnels - Didn't Jon get lost in the tunnels under the archives and experience something quite similar to what happened to Mrs Richardson? Because a) wouldn't that have marked him as one of Michaels targets too, and b) is that how Michael can just move in and out of the archives freely? Because he literally (lives/is) their basement?
Well honestly, claiming usual neutrality in this regard feels fake then - sure, Michael can claim having the archives taken by Jane Prentiss (who was most likely also taken by one of the fear people, no?) too early would have ended the story too early UPSET THE BALANCE, but if I was living underneath a potential battleground and suddenly found my home infested with heaps upon heaps of flesh eating worms because the upstairs neighbours keep duking it out, I would have taken measures to keep them out of the house too.
Since Michael just stabbed Jon, however, we cannot assume he'd fight to protect the Institute in any way beyond that, though. At least I feel confident assuming he doesn't actually really want anything with the Institute, because he could have just.. idk, taken/done what he wanted.
Getting back to my earlier thought regarding Prentiss: Her statement made her out to have had a pretty normal life before she was infected by the worm disease. That means she either is a regular person who got involved with the Worm Avatar (and we shall still meet that character, altho in which case I don't wanna), or she was somehow turned... Which would imply that Michael may have also once been human? That is, of course, if there is only one fear avatar per category and not a whole bunch of freaky people-shaped beings running around sharing a hive mind. That's uh. Huh.
I'm not sure what's more interesting - human's getting infected/so consumed by fears they turn into them, losing all their humanity and identity, or just these Eldritch Fear Creatures living among us, wearing human suits to interact with us, but otherwise being completely removed from us.
... If the first one is possible and humans can be turned into ... whatever exactly Michael is.. I uh.. Am afraid. For the characters. Who are all. Very human.
Let's hope they just get eaten by worms, I guess.

i’m doing midterms right now but i’ve been inspired this weekend i guess bc i started the next chapter of the red room from scratch bc i wasn’t happy with it at all and now i have 4k words so far. also i got over my writers block that was specifically targeted at the hunger games and figured out how i wanted to structure the next chapter. i apologize for how slow i am with getting chapters out. i also apologize for the fact that i am probably going to continue to be slow. BUT the fact that i’m slow absolutely does not mean that anything is being abandoned. it just means i want to give y’all the best content possible. mwah.
