Or, after the kitchen scene, Shen Wei gets a drunk voicemail from Zhao Yunlan.
my fill for @guardianbingo bonus round five: answer.
i wanted to fill some gaps in canon with this fic — primarily, what happens after shen wei walks out of zhao yunlan's apartment in episode 23. i also really wanted to portray zhao yunlan's blindness in a more anchored way than we see in the show, particularly all the small ways that suddenly becoming disabled changes (or doesn't change) the day to day habits of your life. what i didn't expect was for this fic to slowly become a character study of shen wei that revolves around the way he thinks about his own life, tracing through the major moments of his life up until the present. this is a story about knowing someone and being known in return, about the sometimes-voluntary and sometimes-involuntary intimacy of disability, and about the way that time can change what you tell yourself about your own past.

The slack, peaceful expression of Zhao Yunlan asleep, his body curled toward the main room. That instinctive way he reached for Shen Wei, patting along his shoulder for his forearm, for his wrist. Even just earlier that night, sitting in companionable quiet on the couch, Zhao Yunlan’s hand tapping along the leather until it found Shen Wei’s ankle and settled there, skin against skin. As if Zhao Yunlan had gotten used to it too, touching. Their bodies as close as their lives were tangled now.
Shen Wei would miss every piece of it.
haha. hurting my own feelings in the down draft of the answer fic! i was initially worried i wouldn't have enough thoughts about that gap between the knife scene and the next scene to write a whole fic about it, but it's starting to seem that the solution is simply: cramming in as much domestic weilan flashback as narratively possible :3

In the drifting silence of his empty apartment, Shen Wei presses the door shut, turns the lock. And then, like his body was waiting until he was alone, his legs give out. Shen Wei tips/topples against/into the wall, sinks down to sitting on the front mat/in the entryway.
He sits there for a long time, curled into himself with his arms around his knees. The whole time, his body braced for the sound of Zhao Yunlan’s door opening, the sound of footsteps crossing the hall. Waiting, again, for Kunlun to return to him.
But no sound comes from outside his door.
At last, Shen Wei tips his head back against the wall, lets out a soft, streaming sigh. The sound trembles in the still air. It’s the closest he’s come to crying in years, that he can remember.

He's been drinking, Shen Wei guesses a moment before the voice in his answering machine says, I probably shouldn't be calling you like this when I've drunk so much. But I, I don't understand how you could do that for me. Who am I to you, Shen W—
Shen Wei stands there with his finger jammed on the pause button of his answering machine and his heart hammering in his chest, and can't quite find it in him to breathe.
In the darkness of his office, the light that means there's more message left to hear flashes blurry in the corner of his vision: red, red, red.
this is a snippet of basically everything i have drafted so far for the answer fic, which (as far as i currently know) picks up from when shen wei walks out of zhao yunlan's apartment in episode 23 after the kitchen scene, and continues until ... something wraps up. not sure what yet, but something delicious hopefully

Welcome to August! This month’s Guardian Bingo bonus prompt is Constellation.
The prompt is inspired by the Qixi Festival, which falls on 22 August this year.

What Is A Bonus Prompt?
An extra prompt issued at the beginning of each month, starting in February. You can fill it in addition to the prompts on your card or swap it out with a square that you don’t like or is giving you trouble.
How Much Time Do I Have To Complete The Bonus Prompt?
Through the end of the month in which it’s issued. February’s prompt has to be filled in February, March’s prompt in March, etc.
Additionally, January 2024 is reserved as a month for turning in bonus prompts you weren’t able to complete during the month they were assigned.
What Time Zone Does The Fest Use For Bonus Prompt Cut Offs?
Since the fest's participants are located in many different time zones, you're free to submit your fill for the month so long as there is some place on Earth that hasn't yet rolled over to the next month, even if your home time zone already has.

With April now upon us, it’s time for a new Guardian Bingo Bonus prompt. (Mod tehfanglyfish is still trying to figure out how April got here so fast!!)

With January behind us, it’s time for the first Guardian Bingo bonus prompt of 2023!
Since February contains both the Lantern Festival on the 5th and Valentine’s Day on the 14th, we had to go with a love-themed prompt.
This month’s prompt is Meet Cute and you have the entire month to fill it.
