What do you think about the criticism of "wasted potential" and how it relates to a show like RWBY? Because I'm often rather ambivalent to it because of how often it feels like a useless buzzword used when a person isn't willing or able to be specific about what specifically is wasted.
I honestly struggle to care about the term at times because I usually don't care that much about what the story didn't do so much as what it DID do and what the point it's trying to make is.
true wasted potential, imo, is when a story sets up something important and then fumbles the execution badly enough that it creates a narrative dead end. tts s3 is wasted potential: s1-2 meticulously set up a slow-boiling conflict between cassandra and rapunzel, driven by rapunzel’s toxic behaviors and disregard for cassandra’s boundaries, and culminating in rapunzel accidentally turning cassandra’s arm to a charred husk and then getting mad at her for being upset. s3 swerves so hard that none of that is followed through and cassandra’s villain arc is framed solely as the result of an irrational breakdown sparked by her discovery that rapunzel’s kidnapper was her mother (<- we learn about this in the first episode of s3) and fueled by zhan tiri’s manipulation. her charred arm literally is not mentioned even once.
what wasted potential means to a lot of people is “i thought the story would be x but it’s y,” or other variations on the basic sentiment that they had an expectation that was not met. in some contexts this is an entirely fair line of criticism (say, gaybaiting or stories derailed by executive meddling or stories with good ideas that are very poorly written), sometimes it’s a matter of taste, and sometimes it’s just a thinly-veiled way to dress up “i expected this story to cater to me and i’m mad that it didn’t” in a less entitled-sounding package.
as it pertains to rwby the wasted potential line, from what i’ve seen of it, comes mostly from either a place of disinterest in (or active disdain for) the thematic storyline or dislike for the repeated breaking of the narrative status quo, or both, or else it’s specific criticism of the white fang arc which does indeed squander its potential.

About twenty years back, there was this weird transitional period after companies had figured out that harvesting their users' demographic information was a potential gold mine but before we lived in a hellish panopticon where any website operator could look up your IP address and know what you had for breakfast where some sites would try to get you to fill out, like, detailed demographic surveys before they'd let you access their stuff. Not just age, gender and geographic location, either – some of them would fish for employment status, marital status, brand preferences, even religious affiliation. A lot of folks I knew would just pick the first option in every dropdown, but my move was always to fill in the demographic information of the current Pope, at least as far as I was able to determine it (brand preference was always a tricky one). I like to think that, thanks to my efforts, their data sets are haunted to this day by a phantom pontiff.

What we need to do is convince all the disney adults in america that high speed rail would be a preferable way of getting to disneyworld compared to driving or flying. We could maybe harness their fondness for the monorail or something, but this is a group of people that has time, income, and passion that we could leverage. If we could direct 5% of the enthusiasm they have for limited edition popcorn buckets into calling their representatives and demanding high-speed interstate rail, we could get it by 2030

above all else a trans woman is a person. above all else a trans women is a woman who goes to the same grocery store as you and buys fruits in the same grocery cart as you and goes home and eats her dinner the same as you. above all else a trans woman is a woman who dresses like you do and talks the same way you do. above all else a trans woman is a woman who wants to be cared about the same way you want to be cared about and a trans woman is a woman who makes friends the same way you make friends. above all else you should care about trans women because they are people. treat her as such.

I think I can trace my intense hatred for the whole "regulations are just corporate bullshit, building codes are just The Man's way of keeping you down, we should return to pre-industrial barter and trade systems" nonsense back to when I first started doing electrical work at one of the largest hospitals in the country.
I have had to learn so much about all the special conditions in the National Electric Code for healthcare systems. All the systems that keep hospitals running, all the redundancies and backups that make sure one disaster or outage won't take out the hospital's life support, all the rules about different spaces within the hospital and the different standards that apply to each of them. And a lot of it is ridiculously over-engineered and overly redundant, but all of it is in the service of saving even one life from being lost to some wacky series of coincidences that could have been prevented with that redundancy.
I've done significantly less work in food production plants and the like, but I know they have similar standards to make sure the plants aren't going to explode or to make sure a careless maintenance tech isn't accidentally dropping screws into jars of baby food or whatever. And research labs have them to make sure some idiot doesn't leave a wrench inside a transformer and wreck a multi-million dollar machine when they try to switch it on.
Living in the self-sufficient commune is all fun and games until someone needs a kidney transplant and suddenly wants a clean, reliable hospital with doctors that are subject to some kind of overseeing body, is my point.

the thing about trying to recommend fiction podcasts to someone who isn't familiar with them is that not only are so so many genres represented but also the level of production can fall anywhere from "basically an audiobook" to "major motion picture minus the pictures"

I love dunmeshi for the like.. built in horror of consumption. Like they eat to survive, they eat to honor their prey, they eat to possibly mourn someone. Laios eats monsters because he wants to learn more about the things he loves, Senshi eats monsters to feel included in the ecosystem because he didn't fit in with the outside and with most creatures in general, Chilchuck DOESN'T eat as much as he could because eating too much could kill all the party members, Marcille eats monsters and hates it but she still does it because she'll die before she could save Falin.
