the thing about trying to recommend fiction podcasts to someone who isn't familiar with them is that not only are so so many genres represented but also the level of production can fall anywhere from "basically an audiobook" to "major motion picture minus the pictures"
#original#idk just something i think about sometimes#you can read a description to get a sense of the genre/plot/vibe but you truly dont know What exactly youre getting into till you listen#with nonfiction podcasts it tends to be easier to get a read on whether its gonna be like. some buddies fucking around with a mic#or more like a whole documentary#or with fiction books there can be different framings but the actual makeup of the thing is almost always the same#idk what im saying at this point i need to stop putting so much bullshit in tags#whatever#audio drama

That was... wonderful... to just hear it done for real, after... what? Four years of thinking about it? Wondering whether it would work, wondering if I'd written bits too fast, or too slow, or... to actually sort of... hear it done by real, professional people and the singers. It's... there isn't a word for it, actually.
Standing Stone, by Paul McCartney
Royal Albert Hall Performance (x)
Making Of Documentary (x)
Standing Stone is a 74 minute long classical piece of music, which Paul worked on for four years. It premiered at the Royal Albert Hall on 14 October 1997 with the London Symphony Orchestra and London Symphony Chorus, conducted by Lawrence Foster.
After his success with his first classical piece, The Liverpool Oratorio, Paul was commissioned to create some music to celebrate EMI's centenary. He came up with the idea of exploring "the way a Celtic man might have wondered about the origins of life and the mystery of human existence" and tied this in the with standing stones which to him symbolised something mystical and long lasting.
Photos by Linda McCartney, included on the album.
Paul wrote a poem to assist in getting the story he was trying to convey straight in his head, and it was printed in the booklet of the album. However, Paul wanted the music to work without the listener necessarily knowing the story, for the music to speak for itself, and so wanted to create a piece that "relies entirely on colours and effects drawn from orchestral and choral forces".
He also created two paintings to go alongside it:

I really recommend watching the documentary, Paul is absolutely delightful throughout the whole thing. It's the first time he'd used a computer and software to help him compose and he seems so excited to talk about it (and he has a Wallace & Gromit mouse mat!).
What's also interesting is how the rest of the team spoke about him. They all make a point that this was Paul's creation, and although David Matthews, John Harle, and Richard Rodney Bennet were brought in to assist with the composition, they all talk about Paul's talent, hard work, and the freshness of approach he brought. (The words 'benevolent dictator' may get used at some point, but they also speak of his kindness and generosity.)
It amazes me that someone with no formal music training could make a leap for pop/rock to classical. Composing for an entire 80 piece orchestra and 120 member choir is a completely different skillset to writing a song for the radio (and I'm not saying that's a lesser thing to be able to do, just different). The fact Paul was not only willing to take on the challenge and push himself, but created something so magical speaks to the sheer creative force that he is.
#paul mccartney#standing stone#the beatles#<- sorry i know it's not beatles but i'm here to spread the word of all of paul's other cool projects to you#that documentary is my new favourite paul thing#it's 50ish mins and you'll just have the best time watching him put this amazing thing together#he just continually astounds me while being the silliest little guy#like imagine having no formal music training#not being able to notate music#but being able to compose THAT long a piece for a whole orchestra and choir#like obviously he got lots of hands on experience with music#but for real how many people could actually make that leap#and the whole time just dancing and singing and getting excited about your shirt having musical instruments on it 😭#and also we need more 90s paul appreciation#and please listen to the music!!#none of this 'classical music is boring' bullshit#because it isn't and you can still hear so much of paul in this!!#mine#paul#97

desert flygon
#pokemon#pokemon ruby and sapphire#hoenn#gen 3#flygon#aquanutart#i made this in the dead of winter a couple of years ago#after wanting for the whole year to enter the tcg illustration contest but i ended up working on something at the last minute as usual#i don't like competition but i enjoy having a reason to draw a pokemon with a lot of other people#i was waking up early before work to keep making progress on it but i thought i wasn't going to make the deadline#and when i had just decided i had done as much as i could and couldn't get it finished#i went out on that cold snowy day and on that day and that day only for some reason my car wouldn't start#we tried starting it with jumper cables but i'm not sure i know how to use them.. anyway i had to call someone and wait for them to come#i had to call in late to work and then i was waiting for two hours. which was just about enough time for me to keep working on this#i was able to submit it seconds before the deadline the next morning#and it's very cool to me that i was able to participate even though i didn't place (i'm actually glad i didn't place)#(because i would rather it go to someone who worked longer on their entry and/or started earlier before the deadline)#(i just wanted to join everyone in drawing a pokemon but i would prefer for it to just be its own thing and not compared to other pokemon)#this is partly why it's cool to me to have the tcg cards from the contest i also entered!#i chose to draw flygon because gen 3 is one of my favorites and i grew up in the desert and always wanted to imagine pokemon running around#that was the last era of my childhood before i moved and had to grow up where everything was new and different#for 12 years overseas i was homesick for this sun#i'm in a snowier place now but i see the sun even in winter so i'm happy!#since drawing this i appreciate and notice flygon a lot more! i always thought trapinch was very cute#i love the scene in twilight wings final episode when flygon is looking around and scanning; it's so cool#and because of this i got very excited to see flygon in the pokearth documentary flying like a dragonfly#i had wanted to imagine it landing a bit like a bug

Ooooo. Alola disliking Mega evolutions but Haru and Guzma being okay with Dyna-/Gigantamaxing is so fun take
My understanding of pokemon lore and gimmick mechanisms are vague at the best, but honestly... If we remove the increase of size, what is the difference between mega evolutions and gigantamaxing?
Is Alolans issues with megas based on how it "forces" a physical change and therefore potentially painful for the pokemon? Gigantamaxing does the exact same thing or even "worse" changes (in my personal opinion: mega vs dynamax gengar)
Is their issue about mega evolution making the pokemon more violent? Dynamax raids and a huge part of the Galar story line proofs that dynamaxing does the exact same thing. One could even say it is even more dangerous since it can not be predicted/controlled without modern science.
Is it because Megas are based on "mystery energy"? Again... Dynamaxing...
So either there is history between Galos and Alola that has lead to huge bias or Alolans just like Galar's culture more due the similarities it shares with their own (the Galar Legue being quite similar to Alola's Island Challenge but with a big stadium fight at the end)
As said... I probably forgetting some lore that explains this all (outside the multiverse and Alola being older region than Galar, ergo could not comment about Dynamaxing in their pokedex) but I am really interested to see how the boys will justify their stand on dyna-/gigantamaxing IF you decide to take the story there.
I postponed answering this ask to THIS WEEK since my reply would've been quite spoilery for todays update
PERSONALLY I like to think that Guzma and Hau *ahem, excuse my strong language* are talking out of their asses and don't actually know much about Dynamaxing/Gigantamaxing and especially not the problems Galar is facing due to the unstable energies causing Pokemon to randomly turn gigantic in the wild.
If they were more informed about it, I think they'd be far more critical of it, since you are correct: Dynamaxing causes FAR more damage and is an active threat in the region, unlike mega evolution, which is a state that doesn't randomly happen and CAN be controlled.
But Hau and Guzma literally only know Dynamaxing from watching the League matches on TV - and with Galar hosting one of the biggest and most reputable Leagues in the world, how could there POSSIBLY be anything wrong with Gigantamaxing, riiiight?
It's the typical scenario we're all too familiar with of knowing a little bit but thinking we know everything about something without actually having done much research on the topic.
#Let's be real WE ALL KNOW SOMEONE WHO'S DONE THIS OR WE HAVE DONE IT OURSELVES#We learned a lil' bit about something and thought ourselves to be INFORMED#Like when I learned more about honey bees and advocated for their protection just to learn that WILD bees are actually the ones at risk#Although in that case it was a common misconception due to BIG SCREEN DOCUMENTARIES and the same info being blasted out EVERYWHERE#Sometimes its hard to get the full picture on an issue when hundreds of outles repeat the same outdated information#especially nowadays with misinformation being spread online eveywhere at a CONSTANT#But I think the important thing is we stay open to learn and are able to change our stance once we gained the whole picture#instead of just sitting on half-truths that lack full perspective yet we still INSIST on them being right#...ok I did nOT mean to go on a tangent like this#mod#reply

Big cat
#ft my poorly drawn monstera leaves for vibe#I was thinking abt shinx and luxray like. I know theyre supposed to be lions but I feel like cheetah or serval would work well too#like with electricity and stuff. wouldnt speed and agility make more sense for an electric type? esp a cat shaped electric type?#maybe it would be ok for luxray to be heavy built because itd be really big by then. but I thought hey it would be cool if its preevolutions#could focus on speed for escaping. escaping and hunting yknow#maybe this is just because I watched a cheetah documentary last night and thought they were cool#I also have a hc that luxray can charge up electricity and make its whole body glow like an x ray#like you can see it’s bones through the blue parts of skin. either as a threat display or courtship#the shinier and bluer the fur is the better you can see the bones. which would mean its feeding itself well#but Im not a biology expert Im just using what I learned from birds LOL#so sososo normal abt luxray line (is my favorite pokemon)#my art#myart#pokemon#illustration#shinx#Luxio#luxray#luxray line

Just thinking about how, when my favorite show—Showtime's The Borgias—aired in 2011, it was 519 years after the RL version of the events in the first episodes (i.e. since 1492). To compare, the accession of the Holy Roman Emperor Otto II (husband of the Byzantine princess Theophanu), and likely the birth of Murasaki Shikibu (author of The Tale of Genji) were as far removed from the real Borgias' lives in 1492 as The Borgias is from the historical events inspiring its premiere.
#anghraine babbles#deep blogging#political shenanigans and codependent siblings#magnificent bastards of the vatican#something i've often struggled to communicate is that while its sensibilities are very modern in certain respects#those sensibilities can also be very EARLY modern at times—particularly akin to early modern art & literature#'but that never happened!!' yeah and early modern history plays are not exactly renowned for detailed historical accuracy either#without being completely divorced from history as they understood it and its legacy in their lives. they were more complicated than that!#and 'the borgias' is as well - e.g. the kind of piecing together of disparate events for reasons of pacing/time/narrative restructuring?#so not manufactured from whole cloth but also not aiming for even remotely documentary accuracy - yeah that's very familiar from the era#allowing for the possibilities of 2011 i feel like while its version of the borgias is not the borgias as they were in plenty of ways#it is a style of engagement w/ history/art that they would be intimately familiar with and regularly exploit for their own benefit#early modern blogging#adaptation

why does everything about historical women have to be about how poorly they were treated/how they were ignored or how “we dont tell their stories!!” and not like. what they actually accomplished
#im watching this documentary on women in ww2#and the whole thing is about how we dont tell these womens stories!!!! but its a little light on the history#like its called women in ww2: the untold stories#and the whole thing is about how these womens stories arent being told……… but theyre not? really telling the stories…..?#like i was so excited abt it when i found it i cus i wanna know more about women overseas and on the home front!#but its modtly just about how theyve gone ignored…… very little about the actual history… you see the irony#amanda.doc

regarding oceangate, i do want them to survive a little bit just for them to absolutely sue the shit out of the owner, i want the greedy people to fight to death on my tv screen, telling us about the horrors they had to endure, finally doing something for the public by entertaining us. turning from kings to jesters.
#txt#oceangate#titanic#i won't whole heartedly wish death on them but i won't be too sad if they died#either way there will be at least one movie and ten documentaries about this#it's all a joke it's alll ridiculous it's all stupid and it's utterly utterly irrelevant#the way it's being reported of is so disproportionate#so what if they die? hundreds of people die on sea and they don't pay 250k to do so#but that's when the media is mute#the only thing that kind of makes this relevant is the exposure (once again) that there are people seen as more important#that's the only thing to take from this#edit 1 week later: why did no one tell me that jester is spelt with a j 😔😔😔#looks like i'm the fool#(get it cause hahha anyway)

16, 17, 23!
thank you will!!
16. Post a picture from the beginning of the year

january 9th, me in the first greenroom of scott's buddy cole tour (pittsburgh). i took a mirror-selfie backstage at every tour stop
17. Post a picture from the end of the year

november 25th, me onstage with scott thompson during his toronto show with the kids in the hall (i know i've already posted this photo but 1. it's the most recent pic of myself that i have and 2. isn't it kind of bizarre that i happened to wear the same outfit???)
23. If you could send a message to yourself back on the first day of the year, what would it be?
"if you make a deal with someone that needs to be fulfilled at a later date, especially for your documentary, GET THAT SHIT IN WRITING!!!!"
this obviously refers to the whole debacle i went through at college this year (scott visited my college on february 9th and i was supposed to interview him alongside another comedy professor and the comedy department told me they'd give me the footage for my documentary since that was the whole reason they got this celebrity appearance. however the professor who was leading the event treated both me and scott super shitty, and since he didn't like the way me and scott talked about gender while respectfully disagreeing he went on to fucking out me on twitter in an attempt to "cancel" scott for "misgendering" me in a separate interview even tho i go by any pronouns, dipshit. after the tour was done, i realized i'd never gotten the footage, so i checked in again and the professor told me he wasn't releasing the footage bc it "violates the college's community guidelines of respect and inclusion." after a LONG back-and-forth with the department head, they eventually released the footage to me. this whole debacle lasted 2 months and left me with some lasting trauma bc of how so many professors i looked up to were treating me like i was somehow in the wrong for being friends with someone who "disrespected my identity" (again, i've gone by "any pronouns" the entire time)
so with all that context, that advice might almost seem too small. like, you might think i'd rather say "don't trust [insert name of professor who outed me]" (bc he genuinely made me think he was a trustworthy person so that betrayal blindsided me). or maybe even go as far as to say "don't invite scott to your college" bc even tho this started as both me and scott wanting to do a nice thing for each other, it was such a shitty experience for both of us that maybe it's not worth the trouble
but aside from the fact that this event had been planned since the end of 2023, i wouldn't want to avoid it completely. as shitty as being outed by a self-serving asshole in an attempt to discredit your close friend is, and as much as i'm still reconciling with how it changed my view on whether i even want to call myself "nonbinary", i'm glad it happened. bc those problems i have with labels would exist even if someone didn't bring them to the forefront, and i've been able to grow so much as a person since i stopped worrying about being "good queer representation." and also, i have no idea where my friendship with scott would be if that hadn't happened. helping me through that shit allowed us to connect on a much deeper level (and is also the reason he let me keep his jacket lmao), i don't know if we'd be quite as close as we are without going through some of the worst shit we've been through together.
but to say i "wouldn't change a thing" is inaccurate bc that month-long email back-and-forth about whether my school promised me that footage (they fucking did) was so shitty and unnecessary. they might have still pulled the same crap even if i'd gotten it in writing, but then i'd at least have proof on my side. oh well, next time.
thanks for the ask!!
End of year ask prompt
#this was longer than i thought it would be but that ''advice to the beginning of the year'' was a whole can of worms#i could've been like ''you got this! don't be so hard on yourself'' but even tho i've been through other shitty things this year#there's only one specific thing i would change if i could and that's getting it in writing lmao#but i am actually grateful that i was able to learn more about myself and it gave me ammunition for my comedy lmao#and that whole debacle is going to be included in the documentary somehow (still figuring it out but it will be)

Yes I know that's not how it works in real life, that's why I did it in fiction
#thinking especially about the time when I was criticized that “this isn't how hypnosis works in real life” I KNOW. I was using it as a trope#for funsies#not for realism#it's a time-honored trope and lots of people like it...#more importantly fiction. is supposed to be entertainment. not a documentary#I could go and and make a whole rant about this but I don't feel like it rn

That conversation yesterday was incredibly respectful, much more than I would expect to get from Twitter, but I am *still* reeling at how I got 'fact checked' by someone's 90-second google search, and that my claims were 'not accurate' as to what they read on wikipedia and imdb.
#unfortunately wikipedia nor imdb does not go into the detailed length of nightmare's incredibly complicated production history#i highly recommend watching the movies that made us' documentary on the nightmare before christmas (i hope it's still on netflix)#as it does go through everything and i believe it talks about (its been a hot minute) disney's whole. treatment. of tnbc#i am not trying to talk down this person btw! they were so respectful and it was a great conversation!#it's not like this information was readily available unless you go out of your way to 'research it'#considering it was more recently henry selick confessed about tim burton's last minute name-inclusion#but. the articles are out there. twitter exploded with it once

"biden is the ONLY restraint on bibi" some of you need to shut the absolute fuck up on politics like you know an iota of what you're talking about
#the rage im feeling right now how not only morally repugnant to say this but also factually incorrect#biden could've stopped this whole thing with one phone call months and months ago as former presidents have done#he is ALL FOR this genocide. like point blank indisputable. he could barely be more pro-israel#and how dare anyone call 35000+ people mostly women and children a RESTRAINT? like seriously shut up#how gross how gross how gross#the audacity of some people to genuinely just yap about shit#tell me palestinians aren't real ppl to you without telling me they're not real to you#liz rants#i dare u to watch the al jazeera documentary. listen to hind's phone call. tell me that's restraint. TELL ME THAT WAS RESTRAINT#and still. like what. yesterday or two days ago the white house was STILL tripping over themselves defending israel shooting hundreds of#rounds at children??? tank fire at the fucking ambulance coming to rescue them?? and that's just ONE instance. one tiny instance#''don't worry guys israel will toooootally investigate themselves shut up about it'' - white house

https://www.tumblr.com/endlessfuckup/754161176164843520/god-i-hate-the-dan-and-phil-fandom-too-theyre-so?source=share their latest stunt? im not in the fandom but im nosy lol
Dan and Phil have been hyping up this "special announcement" for this "secret project" in a way they never have before with others in the past making it clear that this was a very big deal
They'd also made it clear that they've been busting their asses on this secret project, were really excited about it and were expecting us to be excited about whatever this was
It was supposed to be a huge surprise
Well... greedy and impatient fans were scouring the internet for any crumb of evidence that they were going on another tour and saw that ticketmaster posted the promo for the Aus/NZ leg of the tour before the official announcement was made (in error due to timezone difference)
Had people just been patient no one would have known about this before it was fixed
The person/people who originally saw this should have kept their mouth shut or notified dan and/or phil about it (its very easy to get in contact with them/their team)
this will be the 3rd tour as a duo and their first tour together since coming out as gay/confirming their relationship (and also just not giving a fuck about how they're perceived anymore)
so this was quite significant (hence why they'd been hyping it so much) and is something the phandom has been looking forward to for years
And it all got completely spoiled by "tour truthers" searching for evidence
#my best summary of what happened anyways#there is a lot of lore behind why this was such a big deal that i didnt feel like typing out#im genuinely pissed about it being leaked like this#it isn't the first time this happened either#its incredibly fucking rude to do shit like this#more importantly most of their fans are grown ass adults#who should not be acting like this anymore#if i had fans like this is cancel the damn tour lmao#i wasn't expecting it to be something as big as a world tour for a lot of reasons#i would have been excited to hear them announce this (I thought it was going to be a documentary or special series)#I'll still get tickets if they come to philly#if i can afford it anyways#but this whole thing genuinely made me really angry and i do not want to be associated with the phandom anymore because of this#sorry for the novel but heres the tea ig lol

I randomly decided to dig out my old dream diary and I'm literally howling with laughter right now about some of the stuff I wrote down there😂😂 So much mildly cursed but in hindsight also extremely hilarious stuff😭😂
For context, I've been wanting to learn lucid dreaming for a long time (still can't do it unfortunately), and for a while during my teenage years I actually tried writing a dream diary to learn remembering my dreams more clearly (according to my notes I actually managed to even get a few semi-lucid dreams!). Most of these are from the first half of 2018, when I actually managed to write down my dreams consistently for a couple months, plus a few from 2019 and early 2020, in total about 20 dreams. I thought it might be funny to share some of the most hilarious, cursed or just really random moments from them:
I met with people that I either went to school with at the time or used to go to school with before, and we had to participate in various competitions or challenges, usually it was either something absurdly dangerous and cruel or something extremely embarrassing. That sort of stuff occurred in multiple dreams, like one time we were in the sports hall of my old primary school and had to kill each other with spears, another time me and some classmates were participating in a challenge of some random YouTuber and had to jump from a really high tower into a bath tub (which had no water in it but a trampoline).
We had to present our short film projects in English class (this is something we actually did in real life), and one group did a retelling of "The Lion King" where Timon died at the finale and that was just how the film ended. Also General Burkhalter from Hogan's Heroes was there as a film critic. He liked that ending even though most other people were just really confused about it.
I met Heinrich Himmler and Reinhard Heydrich on a Christmas market and they were a gay couple and I took stupid selfies with them (what the fuck). In another dream Himmler was together with Joseph Goebbels instead, but before I woke up they told me it was actually just a prank and when I looked at the date it was suddenly April Fool's Day.
On my 15th birthday (in real life) I dreamed that it was summer and Christmas at the same time. (I live in the northern hemisphere so that doesn't happen here. Also my birthday is obviously not at Christmas.)
So. Many. Dreams. About. Thrawn. I swear about half of all the dreams I wrote down were just about me being in love with Thrawn and trying to get together with him, the nonsense level of the surrounding scenarios usually varying. There are too many to explain them all, but one of my favourite quote from one of the diary entries is probably "Thrawn and I had an ugly child", it's just so blunt and random😭 In another dream Thrawn randomly had a beard and I lowkey hated it, and in another he turned out to just be a human guy with make-up and I was super disappointed when I woke up.
A bunch of doctors and scientists were investigating our garden pond and randomly found the corpse of a blue-haired girl, but they weren't interested in her at all and just threw her onto our compost heap💀
I was Tony Stark's adoptive daughter (no idea why, I'm not even in the Marvel fandom) and when someone broke into our house to steal his inventions, I tried fighting the guy off and we had a duel with using a pot and a frying pan as weapons. He was arrested and we went eating tacos to celebrate.
Not gonna lie reading through all this madness actually makes me want to start writing a dream diary again😂 Like, even if I still don't learn lucid dreaming, at least I'll have something to laugh about again in a few years xD
#my top 3 recurring topics were apparently Thrawn; weird challenges with people from my school and gay nazis. truly amazing👍😂#I assume I watched a lot of both Star Wars and history documentaries at the time but still. my 14 year old self surely had an imagination#there were also some dreams involving my real life crush from school at the time but those aren't that interesting from today's perspective#but I also think that the Himmler x Heydrich dream originated from some mildly cursed comic that I found when I was like 13 or 14#I don't even know how but you know how the internet is🤷I'm not sure if this is something I could've come up with myself#(like the comic itself wasn't even that cursed; the story was basically a romcom with lots of back and forth and just random stuff#and the artstyle from what I remember was even kinda cute. but like also why is there what's basically a fanfiction of these people#at least it's good to know that they themselves wouldn't approve of it and the artist was probably just doing this to make fun of them)#(I still read the whole thing but more in a 'haha why the fuck does this exist' kinda way but also once I started I had to know the ending)#but I laughed so hard because I didn't remember AT ALL that this also caused me to have a dream about them at some point#like you would think that maybe something that cursed is in some way memorable. but I just - forgot about it#but no I really need to start writing down my dreams again😭#dream diary#selnia talks
