So while I was reading your latest comic, I had to ask:

Since El is from Kalos, does she have a French accent? (cause Kalos is based off France) ('3')

Nope, El may have grown up in Kalos, but her family actually moved there when she was around 5, so while she considers Kalos her home, she's not actually a native Kalosian and grew up bilingual.

Her parents moved around a lot due to her Dad working as a substitute gym leader. He has his own gym, but if a gym leader retires before a successor has been determined, he helps out by filling in for the position for the time being, which usually results in him living in a different region for a couple of months, at max for a year or two. Since he has bigger staff at his own gym with a colleague fiilling in for him, he can allow himself to leave his gym behind for a while.

When he was called to help out in Kalos, upon arriving and settling in, El's mom refused to partake in yet another move, now that they had a daughter who was about to turn 6 and ready to go to school (yes, regular school, as we've seen in the anime "Journeys", schools that AREN'T explicitly TRAINER schools also still exists 😂)

She wanted to give her daughter stability and the chance to make friends and she greatly enjoyed Kalos' cities and culture. When her husband had to move yet again, she stayed behind in Kalos with her daughter. It was kind of an inofficial break-up.

Ooooo. Alola disliking Mega evolutions but Haru and Guzma being okay with Dyna-/Gigantamaxing is so fun take

My understanding of pokemon lore and gimmick mechanisms are vague at the best, but honestly... If we remove the increase of size, what is the difference between mega evolutions and gigantamaxing?

Is Alolans issues with megas based on how it "forces" a physical change and therefore potentially painful for the pokemon? Gigantamaxing does the exact same thing or even "worse" changes (in my personal opinion: mega vs dynamax gengar)

Is their issue about mega evolution making the pokemon more violent? Dynamax raids and a huge part of the Galar story line proofs that dynamaxing does the exact same thing. One could even say it is even more dangerous since it can not be predicted/controlled without modern science.

Is it because Megas are based on "mystery energy"? Again... Dynamaxing...

So either there is history between Galos and Alola that has lead to huge bias or Alolans just like Galar's culture more due the similarities it shares with their own (the Galar Legue being quite similar to Alola's Island Challenge but with a big stadium fight at the end)

As said... I probably forgetting some lore that explains this all (outside the multiverse and Alola being older region than Galar, ergo could not comment about Dynamaxing in their pokedex) but I am really interested to see how the boys will justify their stand on dyna-/gigantamaxing IF you decide to take the story there.

I postponed answering this ask to THIS WEEK since my reply would've been quite spoilery for todays update

PERSONALLY I like to think that Guzma and Hau *ahem, excuse my strong language* are talking out of their asses and don't actually know much about Dynamaxing/Gigantamaxing and especially not the problems Galar is facing due to the unstable energies causing Pokemon to randomly turn gigantic in the wild.

If they were more informed about it, I think they'd be far more critical of it, since you are correct: Dynamaxing causes FAR more damage and is an active threat in the region, unlike mega evolution, which is a state that doesn't randomly happen and CAN be controlled.

But Hau and Guzma literally only know Dynamaxing from watching the League matches on TV - and with Galar hosting one of the biggest and most reputable Leagues in the world, how could there POSSIBLY be anything wrong with Gigantamaxing, riiiight?

It's the typical scenario we're all too familiar with of knowing a little bit but thinking we know everything about something without actually having done much research on the topic.

I know El has taken Mega-Latias for a ride within the comics, and was even made to take Ride Pokémon training in order to ride her legally.

Have Hau and Guzma never seen El with Mega-Latios before? And if they have, how did they not call her out on her supposedly "cruel" treatment of such a sweet and gentle Legendary pokémon?

ACTUALLY Fun fact, she has not been riding Latias in her Mega-form in the comics yet!

Especially now that she has to wear riding-gear, it's risky to let her transform in mid-flight while wearing it - she'd either need a completely different one for her Mega form or someone would need to invent a material that changes with Latias' form, otherwise her regular gear would probably be ripped or hinder Latias from evolving 😅

Hey, don't be sorry if the updates are short.

I imagine you have a lot of work to do (making things for selling, finding a publisher for your books, planning for conventions...), so I'm okay with the fact that it's so short.

It would be totally okay for me too if you wrote a 500 word post about any topic you like.

Y'ALL ARE TOO SWEET, Thank you for being so understanding 😭 Sometimes I wish I could update as frequently as full-time webcomic artists are able to, but it's exactly as you said, then I wouldn't be able to do all the things you just listed, from commissions to merch to book work ect...

I'm just really impatient myself sometimes. I really want to reach a certain story arc this year within the comic, there are stories yet untold that are VERY important to me, so I'm trying to work smarter and more efficient, but there's definitely a limit on shortcuts I can take, especially when life is unpredictable as it is. You can never work like a machine and plan for EVERYTHING in advance, that's just not how it works.

But that's why I'm even more grateful for all of you guys ☺️ The fact that you're all still as hyped as ever whenever I update and are looking forward to the comics no matter how long some updates may take, it really means the world to me!! It keeps me motivated and I am so happy my joy and love for this comic is still going strong! The road may be long, but I am determined to continue this story, while also working on my gardendragon books in hopes that I can share THOSE stories one day with you all as well! 💖

IIRC, the very negative Mega-Evo dex entries in SM/USUM was because some people at gamefreak that really disliked the mega evolution gimmick were tasked with writing dex entries for the game, so they actively and maliciously slandered the Mega-Evos with the whole "This kills the 'Mon, and if you do this you're a monster" retoric.

That is also notable in that the later Let's Go games, which had all the Gen 1 megas, but with much more light hearted dex entries. They were written by someone who didn't hate mega evolution.

OH MY GOD YES I heard of that story too and if it's true then that's so fucking funny because that level of complete and utter SPITE for a gimmick is TRULY UNMATCHED IN ALL OF POKEMON LORE

Continuing on the whole "Alola thinks Mega Evos are bad!" thing... even though there ARE potential dangers associated with Mega Evolution that are touched upon even in the Generation they were introduced in, it was always framed in a way that suggested that any complications with Mega Evos tended to be the result of inexperience or other external factors. Not to mention that some Gen 7 Dex entries absolutely frame certain Mega Evo entries in such a way that it reinforces the cultural bias instead of challenging it. Like they carried out experiments to gather data on Mega Evolutions, but in such a way that the results were guaranteed to favor their already skewed viewpoints that favored the use of Z-Moves instead. Like a "We, the Obviously Biased Group of People, have done an internal investigation on whether or not we are in the wrong about this thing and have concluded that, on totally fair grounds, we are absolutely right and correct about this thing all the time forever." sort of thing.

Oh I really like this take, especially considering that we have a shady scientific organisation in Alola that could have absolutely fed into these "findings" through questionable studies (*cough cough* Aether Foundation *cough cough*)

I'm not the only one who feels like the anti-Mega Evo bias in SuMo/USUM, besides being a product of Game Freak's devs trying to get players to shift focus to Z Moves in the most hamfisted way possible, is like... the product of a severe cultural bias in-universe? Several Gen 7 Pokedex entries on Mega Evos feel as though they're written under the assumption that these transformations are long-term, rather than something done for the duration of a single battle, and go whole-hog on the "IF YOU MEGA EVOLVE YOUR POKEMON YOU'RE THE LITERAL DEVIL." hate train with zero focus on the fact that Mega Evolutions are explicitly triggered by the bond of friendship between Trainer and Pokemon.

It literally runs on the power of friendship and we're expected to think it's bad now?? It's baloney is what that is.

YES EXACTLY MY THOUGHTS!!!! I'm taking it as a cultural/regional bias too, an absolute misunderstanding of the mechanisms of mega evolution, simply because it is not a common practice in Alola. Not to mention that some of the general entries of the Rotomdex are quite contradictory depending on which version of the game you're playing, so there's that :'D

I've been meaning to bring up this topic for AGES in the comics and I'm happy to have finally reached this point!
