Dreamt up this name a few weeks ago, trying to flesh it out

Hannabeth Leigh hated her name but every time she sighed about it to her parents, her mother, Anna, would get a sad look in her eye and her father, Mike, would shake his head.

“You were named for your grandmothers.  I wish you could have met either of them,” Anna would say.

“And Lee was my younger brother who died in a car accident two months before you were born,” Mike would add.  “We just changed the spelling.”

“I know,” Hannabeth would reply.  “It’s just, well, do you have to call me by both names all the time?  Hannabeth is already a cumbersome name.  Being called by both names is a lot.”

But no matter her protests, Hannabeth Leigh she was and always would be to her parents.

A New Normal

I had planned to continue to document Boone’s journey to wellness but our lives are yet again in upheaval. But so is yours at this point I am guessing. We are all right in the middle of a world wide pandemic. We are about 2 weeks into our state slowly shutting everything down. Schools were closed down and the kids last day was March 13th. Artist Q&A: Tuesday June 29th at 7pm Film Screening: POSTPONED to Tuesday June 29th at 9:30pm Burrardview Fieldhouse, 545 North Slocan Street, Vancouver BC

Collaborating artists lisa g nielsen & Skai Fowler will further their experimental film project entitled AFTER: where to go from here? for their Iris Film Collective’s Burrardview Fieldhouse residency.

Inspired by the surrealist film work of Maya Deren, the do-it-yourself attitude of Rosie the Riveter with a pinch of vaudeville, lisa g and Skai will continue their film series using hand processed super 8 film and sound during the month of June 2021. The films, shot collaboratively and intuitively,  star Skai Fowler as protagonist as she moves through her new reality. The soundscape is purposely edited separately and then combined with the film after both components are completed. This incongruous way of building ‘story’ is reflecting the need to break free of social & political systems that are holding us all back.

Bios:

lisa g is a founding member of the Iris Film Collective. She enjoys working collaboratively and within communities creating work that has historical reference & social relevance. lisa g is drawn to many mediums; photography, writing, performance and finds that film is a fun way to bring so many mediums together. lisa g has also been a producer/mentor for the Our World project since 2007, bringing analog & digital storytelling tools and mentors to remote Indigenous communities for folks to create self directed short films.  www.ourworldlanguage.ca

SKAI FOWLER started her pursuit in visual arts using water colours, mentoring with master painter Ranjan Sen. She continued her studies at Emily Carr University of Art and Design graduating in Photography and Interdisciplinary studies. Skai graduated in 1985 and has been exhibiting nationally and internationally ever since. She has been working in an abstract style with acrylic paints for over 30 years. “Painting abstract pieces provides me with a fresh way of seeing the physical world, a second sight into the energies that surround me. My intent is to convey an essence of a thing or a moment of the soul. When I paint I search for directness and an intimacy of instinctual response, manifesting a passion for the landscape of the subconscious.”  www.skaiart.com

No Plus One

Ruby had sent out her wedding invites right after Estrella told her I’d been seeing someone behind her back. Her displeasure showed in her penmanship. The invite I got in the mail had red pen marks and a note attached to the back.

Dear Natti,

 I’m letting you know now you are not allowed to come alone. Not anymore. I know you have some excuse lined up but let me remind you it’s my day and nothing matters more than what the bride wants.

P.S. 

I’m upset you didn’t tell me first. Also mail is more threatening than a text message.

I let the invite sit on my coffee table. I stared blankly at the ceiling for what felt like an eternity. Without giving another thought I picked up the invite and marked the RSVP and plus one check box. 

“Kill me now.”

The urge to scream came to me but the best I could do was shove my face into my couch cushion and let out a half ass screech. Despite the threat of a piece of mail I knew Ruby would send a text too. The sound of her typing away demanding to meet my mystery man drove my head in. Adrian, the guy I had been seeing recently, broke up with me less than three months ago. The relationship left me numb and the worst part was his bounce back. She was pretty, blonde, put together and an editor for a publishing company where I had been denied countless times. My only solace in it all was how bad he was in bed. 

My phone buzzed. I let it go. It buzzed again. Reluctantly I glanced at the screen hoping Ruby’s name wouldn’t be there. To my surprise it wasn’t. 

“Hello.”

“Natti, I’m sorry.”

Estrella’s voice boomed on the other side. 

“You sure you’re sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Ok. I believe you.”

The room fell silent for a brief moment. I could feel Estrella breathing on the other line waiting to say something else. 

“Are you ok?”

“Yes… Well, I’m just curious. You haven’t said anything about-”

“Are we starting this now?”

The words came out harsher than I meant them to. 

“So you’re angry. I get it. I’ll apologize again.”

“There’s no need. I’ll get over it.”

Another moment of silence went by. Estrella was the first to speak, her apology tour taking up the conversation. I had half the mind to hang up and deal with the fall out some other time. Then suddenly the other half remembered Estrella had found out about my relationship somehow. 

“I’m sorry. Truly I’m-”

“How did you know?”

“What?”

“How did you find out about it, my mystery guy I mean?”

Estrella cleared her throat.

“Mark said he saw you out with someone, so I-”

“Mark, god damn it. You two are really made for each other.”

“You're mad at him too now?”

“No. What’s done is done.”

“Natti, I was just… I was just upset you didn’t tell me. Ruby is the same.”

“I know. Listen, I'm gonna hang up ok.”

“WAIT. Can we meet him?”

The question punched me in the gut. The memories of Adrian came running back now with Mark looming somewhere in the corner. 

“There’s no him we broke up. I’ll talk to you later, bye.”

I heard Estrella mumbling, telling me to hold on. I hung up anyway. Her string of apologies made me look at Ruby’s wedding invitation again. With a deep breath I turned my phone off and took myself to bed early. ��

Well, today I went to see a new GI doctor. I haven't had one since moving to Tennessee and I've been having a really hard time lately with my gut. She ordered a bunch of labs. One of those being Celiac's. I haven't been checked in over 10 years and she told me that there is a correlation of PCOS and Celiac's- this was new to me- I also have to have another dreaded colonoscopy 🙄 where she will take biopsies of different sections of my colon and send them off for testing.

Hopefully things come back with good news.
