I’m dying to see Sophie Okonedo channeling as Siuan cause I’m picturing her gestures and movements to be graceful but efficient, every move with a purpose and precise to the T. Contrasting with her soulmate Moiraine Dramadred that likes to bend over to throw a fireball and just do a casual interpretative dance move to light a torch.

no thoughts just rosamund pike and sophie okonedo hitting it out of the park in the 2x07 flashback
Prior to this scene we’ve only seen them in the present. Separated, forced to hide their mission and their love for each other, weighed down by twenty years of secrets on secrets on secrets.
And then suddenly we have a glimpse of them before. Before all the secrets and half-truths and hiding. And this is where I think Rosamund and Sophie deserve all the love: because they managed to convey innocence and happiness, and hope with pretty much just body language. Both of them have a palpable lightness that is established from the get go: wandering through the tower, holding hands, dragging each other along and kissing in corners. They’re so young, and you feel it in these moments.
So much is conveyed about them and how they’ve changed, all in the space of five minutes, which makes the end of the episode so much more soul-crushing, because we’ve seen what they were and what they could have been. ROSAMUND AND SOPHIE YOU ICONS

Costuming the Amyrlin, part 2
For the sake of spoiler avoidance, this post is in two parts. Please read part 1 on Siuan's costuming as we've seen onscreen so far before reading this post!
At some point in the show, we are going to be seeing Siuan when she is no longer the Amyrlin, and we are going to see Egwene and Elaida as two very different Amyrlins. They have room to go in some very different directions with their costumes, and thus far, I think Siuan's costumes as Amyrlin really lend themselves to this. So this is my speculation, based on what they've done so far, and the elements of Siuan's costuming as they lend themselves to other characters, and how we can contrast them.
Siuan Sanche after the Tower
If you're reading this post, you're very aware that Siuan's time as Amyrlin is not going to last much longer - very scared, but very excited to see Sophie Okonedo absolutely kill it as we see that contrast between Siuan Sanche the Amyrlin Seat, Siuan the stilled runaway, and Siuan Sedai.
It seems a safe bet that Siuan's costumes after the coup will be a lot simpler and a lot more comfortable, and that'll continue in Salidar, not just as a runaway. Siuan on the run, as well as Siuan in Salidar, is Siuan with actual control and agency over the very simple thing of choosing what to wear. Or, as much control as you can have with little in the way of funds or resources. But I wouldn't be shocked if it's a one-way shift - even once the Tower reunites, Siuan will be in a position to have a lot more control over every element of herself, and sticking her in costumes that she would be more comfortable in is an easy visual cue to support whatever she says and does.
(As an aside: I hope Sharon knows that I'll be finding her for A Conversation if she takes cues from the way the books describe Siuan's costumes in Salidar and Tel'aran'rhiod. There are many things that happen in these books that should remain on the page and never grace our screens and a good chunk of that list pertains to Siuan. But anyway...)
Also: I would love it if we get Siuan with a protective hairstyle once she's out of the Tower. Please.
Elaida as Amyrlin
Elaida is going to be living for this. I have no doubt that Elaida's costumes will make Siuan's seem subdued. But how can that happen when Siuan's are already so ostentatious? Add more stuff. Make it tacky. Siuan's regalia, while ostentatious, is tasteful; Elaida is decidedly not. Elaida seems exactly the type to add gems, to add jewellery, to add colour - she wears a lot of red in the books, and if she continues to do so in the show, it will stand out even more after an Amyrlin whose clothing remained neutral. It's a very sharp visual contrast. Elaida is desperately clinging to power, to prestige, to the illusion of respect - I've no doubt that her costuming will reflect that.
I do still expect some continuity with Siuan's costumes, though, at least to start. The papal shapes, with huge swathes of fabric disguising the person underneath; the sheer amount of embroidery and other decoration, a clear display of how much time can be afforded for one garment to be worn by one person. But where Siuan's costumes were neutral, Elaida's will not be. Where Siuan's costumes were subtle (or as subtle as a queen-pope-leader role can allow), Elaida's will not be.
And by making Elaida be so overt in her show of power and resources, it will contrast spectacularly with Egwene in Salidar.
Egwene as Amyrlin
When Egwene is raised, Salidar will have no resources to make her look the Amyrlin in the way that Siuan looked the Amyrlin - they don't have the funds, they don't have the tailors, they don't have the fabric. I'm expecting this to be where the stole of the books to make its appearance - they cannot make Egwene look like she could stand next to a queen, but they can make her recognisable in her role with some strips of fabric.
But also: as I mentioned earlier, the olivey-gold colour that comes when you blend the seven colours of the Ajahs, that bears a striking resemblance to the gold of Siuan's costumes? I can see Egwene wearing that colour, in far simpler clothing. It would be a fairly subtle call-back to Siuan's costumes, dialling down in opposition to the way in which Elaida's will inevitably be dialled up. Egwene's costumes will take the colour, and make the clothing simpler; Elaida's will take the ostentation and the structure, and make it obnoxious.
And when she reunites the Tower, she may not end up in full regalia. Of course, she might, as it would symbolise the reunification, making it feel wholly formal. But I wouldn't be surprised if her regalia is plainer - she was the Amyrlin of a rebel faction, and she did not have the regalia of the position; she does not need it now, because there is no doubt of her role. She does not need to reinforce her position by showing her resources, and given what she has achieved without much at all, a lack of ostentation will lend her more credence than anything else. Egwene as Amyrlin ushers in a new age for the Tower - the vestments may be another thing that she discards with the old ways.
It's still early days - we've yet to see Siuan in season 2, and things may change, depending on the costumes we see her in. (I believe I heard mention of a travelling outfit in this video, and it sounds like it's referring to one we don't see, but I'm not sure.) However, with what they've done so far, I think they've set themselves up spectacularly to show both the change in Siuan over her arc, and the ways in which the Amyrlins that succeed her play their hands in their roles.

I totally get where Brandon Sanderson is coming from in his criticism of the show and how it's playing hard and fast with the world building and magic system which will lead to larger changes down the line or the butterfly effect as George RR Martin keeps talking about with respect to GOT.
At the same time, people need to understand: I have a stake in this they do not. My name is LITERALLY on this product. And so, it being weak in areas that are important to me is something that I find a bigger worry in it than I might in another show. If you play loose and free with magic systems, then that reflects badly on me--as this is one of my specialties, and people will watch and be annoyed about things that I really, in a perfect world, should have been able to help the writers fix. I consider one of my other big strengths to be character arcs with powerful resolutions, and both seasons have really had troubles with this in the last episodes. That reflects on me, because having me involved should be able to help with this.
For example I came across a discussion on the WOT subreddit on whether Rand is a false dragon and that's when it struck me that yeah, Moiraine creating that huge fire dragon does end up making Rand a false dragon as per the worldbuilding of the books.
Think about it. Liandrin or any of the Black Ajah can choose a man who can channel, make a huge fire dragon for him and declare him the dragon reborn. And in the books, false dragons are said to be controlled by Aes Sedai and several major players often allege that Rand himself is false and controlled by the Aes Sedai.
Which is why 'Ta'veren' - which the show seems to have forgotten about - is an important aspect of the magical system of the world of WOT. It's the pattern that creates a set of conditions/events that leads to Rand fulfilling prophecies - which identifies him as the Dragon Reborn. Show Rand got none of that.
Which is why in the books, Siuan and Moiraine decide that Rand needs to exercise his free will and lets him go do his own thing. This is a big deal in the books and a decision that has major consequences for Siuan Sanche. The show, however, did a complete 180 on Siuan - changed her motivations, her actions, her reasoning. In effect that was a complete character assassination made worse by the fact that she's played by the amazing Sophie Okonedo.
And not just Moiraine creating that dragon, what's with her attacking the Seanchan ships using the One Power? Isn't that a violation of her three oaths? It's this magical system that gives us some of the best bits of the books - like that time where Mat keeps asking an Aes Sedai to use her one power to attack and she has to wait till she gets attacked to use it. This is what makes the world of the books so much more fun and interesting.

Finished s1/started s2 of WOT, thoughts as follows:
1x08 truly was just the LOTR Lite Power Hour, including Helm's Deep
I will say that the bit at the start, where they reveal that 3000 years ago was an advanced sci-fi society, was the most interesting and original plot thing they've done so far
2x01 did feel more interesting and better paced overall; I am hopeful it will indeed be better than s1, which was fun but really nothing particularly special
I am aware that they get together in the book, but I'm still getting nothing from Lan/Nynaeve? They looked at each other meaningfully a few times in s1, they were then in love, or something
Zzzzzzz
Lololololololol poor Lan, tried to be emotionally available and have a nice dinner and then immediately nearly died
GODDAMN IT GOTTA RUN OUT AND FIGHT SOME RINGWRAITHS BECAUSE MOIRAINE DONE DID SOMETHING DUMB AGAIN
I don't ship him and Moiraine exactly (because I like them being platonic lifemates and also I obviously like Moiraine with Sophie Okonedo's character) but I also don't NOT ship them, it's confusing
Rand now has the Buzzcut of Angst, he can talk to Flint in Black Sails s3 to find out how that usually goes
Hint: it's usually Not Good
Me at the end of s1: yeah there's 14 more books in this series, that was definitely not the Last Battle
And indeed, Dark One Guy is back, we suspect this likewise won't go well
I am excited for the arrival of my Hot Evil Eyeliner Wife

been thinking a lot lately about siuan in the fur coat in s2e7. like i'm not sure how much they wanted it to be read as something beyond cairhien is cold and rich people wear fur but putting a black woman in a fur coat has soooo much messaging in it. even if she isn't american even if the show is not made only by americans. i'm not going to fully webweave but the history in this paragraph from a nytimes essay:
and this bit from a cosmo essay where the writer dressed like cookie from empire for a week:
anyway there's more out there about the history of black women and fur if you google i just am thinking about what it means for a poor girl from tear who is now the most powerful woman the world played by international treasure sophie okonedo to wear fur.
taking up space. protecting herself. i came from nothing but i have this. these women respect me because i look like this, despite looking like this. will they hold me up? will this protect me from the world and the forces i cannot control? what becomes a legend most?
#the nytimes story has a lot of details about mink farms btw so if that's upsetting to you don't read that one#wheel of time#wot meta#wot season 2#wheel of time s2#siuan sanche

So…
I was thinking about Sing 3 and the potential of bringing Nooshy back…
A lot of sources are speculating that it isn’t happening and I feel like I know the main reason why they think it won’t…
As far as I know, Letitia Wright, Nooshy’s VA, is still on hiatus from acting because she had genuine concerns of the new COVID-19 vaccines and the internet cancelled her straight away! The last film released with her acting credit before this decision, of course, was Wakanda Forever. (yeah, just because I have high functioning autism, it doesn’t mean I’m an idiot when it comes to how long movies in post-production can take, especially for a MARVEL FILM!)
I still say that it’s not out of the question for Nooshy to return yet. Illumination has no problem replacing actors when the original is either unavailable or in legal trouble. For instance, Louis C.K., who originally voiced Max for The Secret Life Of Pets was facing sexual assault allegations during the production of the sequel, and Patton Oswalt was called in to fill the role.
Now you may be saying, “But, Artica, Max is the protagonist of Secret Life! It just wouldn’t be a Pets movie without Max! Maybe we could survive without Nooshy!”
Well, you’d be right. When you have a character that integral to your franchise, you can’t just drop them! That’s how I feel about Nooshy! She solidified herself as a part of the New Moon Troupe just by being there for Johnny and the others! If you pitched her now, you’d lose a choreographer! Okay, maybe that’s what Ryan could be used for as well, but I can see the pair of them being co-workers and supporting their friends unconditionally!
What’s the point? Well, for the past year, I have been scouting for potential candidates for Nooshy’s new voice actress. To keep the Black representation alive, I mostly focused on Black women with that beautiful British accent we know and love. Leigh-Ann Pollock of Little Mix fame (perfect for if they wanted Nooshy to sing), Clara Amfo of BBC Radio One, Sophie Okonedo of The Secret Life Of Bees [Funny coincidence there]… But then last night, I realized that the answer was right in front of my face from the beginning!
Sherrie Silver was responsible for the choreography for Sing 2 and for helping to bring Out Of This World to life! She even stated that she really liked Nooshy and focused on her agility and flexibility a lot. It almost makes sense that if no one else, Illumination should have her voice Nooshy!
It really isn’t too far off to ask a choreographer to do some acting. For the Japanese dub of Sing 2, Akane Miyazaki, who is known for her choreography, was called in to voice Nooshy.
And do you remember Alvin And The Chipmunks 2007?
The actual choreographer for that film, Rosero “Taffy” McCoy even got his own little scene in that film, where he tells Ian [David Cross] that he’s the choreographer and he hilariously doesn’t even know what that means. It’s your JOB as a huge record executive and tour manager to know what a choreographer is!
Taffy: It’s dancing.
Ian: Well, then next time just say I’m the dance guy!
Yes, it’s filler, but it’s entertaining filler that highlights the significance of choreographers!
So yeah… That’s my opinion on it all. Feel free to tell me who you think should fill Nooshy’s shoes and what role she could play in Sing 3, if at all!

Sophie Okonedo & Julianne Nicholson in Janet Planet (Photo source)
“Sophie Okonedo’s vivacious Regina—the film’s most memorable presence”
“The second chapter signifies the arrival of Regina (Sophie Okonedo, a light), an old friend of Janet’s attempting to restart her life. Regina has spent too many years in the confines of a local theater group she casually refers to as a ‘cult.’ ”
“Then comes Sophie Okenedo, a bubbly friend emerging from a toxic relationship with a thespian commune.”
“…her warm but slightly maddening old friend Regina (Sophie Okonedo, superb), who insists the collective is not a cult but nonetheless is eager to flee from the overbearing influence of Avi, with whom she has been in a relationship.”
A movie featuring a bespectacled Sophie Okonedo escaping a thespian commune? Where does the line for the next viewing form?
#this hand appreciation post is brought to you by: lesbian#sophie okonedo#Julianne Nicholson#Janet planet#give me anything - a trailer. a release date. a film still. ANYTHING

I watched Medea today with Sophie Okonedo and Ben Daniels and basically the ending consisted of him wet, tank-top wearing, blood covered (it's his dead kids', killed by Medea), sobbing and screaming and crawling in a puddle created by water continuously falling onto the stage in a rain effect
and her towering over him, mocking how piteous he is
it was
a lot
(was reminded that I am gay)
he also at one point posed great statue style for a solid 20 seconds in front of where we were seated, RIP to the dialogue during that moment, twasnt heard by me and my friend
neither of them came to stage door for covid reasons, which, very fair (I mean, very fair to not come to stage door anyway also), but hope to one day tell them that it was amazing + that the exorcist deserved better
#ben daniels#sophie okonedo#she was so wonderfully manipulative but also the language really sets you up to support her#you're like yeah yeah you're so rig- oh you're gonna kill your kids?#you know what -- go queen i support all your wrongs#medea#cannot find a blood-covered mr daniels#there was a lot of interesting masculinity in this play#lot of interesting femininity but ive been talking masculinity with trans guys in interviews for 4 days straight#so my focus is obvs a lil skewed#but with okonedo it was very much the character presenting different faces of womanhood as an act#to get her revenge by playing on people underestimating her despite knowing she's really really powerful#whereas with daniels he was playing all the male characters so he himself was moving in and out of parts#theatre#personal

Canon Fancast - Sophie Okonedo as Angrboða
Fics (so far): to tell the secrets (of my heart), a party (with family), and so (our family grows), never doubt (yourself), WIP: Children of Oak and Ash
The most powerful witch in Ironwood, Angrboða is both renowned and feared throughout Asgard for her use of seidr, and this has always been a situation she's been happy with - the Court has never interested her, and when she's not in Ironwood she will travel freely to other realms when she has a wish to, finding them much more interesting than the stagnant Asgard. But this isn't to say she is completely distasteful of her home realm - she has a good friend (and sometimes lover) in Loki, someone she bonded with through their shared passion for magic and knowledge and with whom she shares a son, Fenris, and she also ended up falling for Sigyn, a talented healer who doesn't see either of them as something to be afraid of, and Angrboða has a steady and loving relationship with her.
Of course, she often worries about both Sigyn and Loki as they share a tendancy to overwork themselves, especially during times of great stress, but she's there to support them where possible, and (if necessary) to pick them back up. She is fiercely protective of her son - and also of her niece and nephews, in the universes where Thor has children - and will use whatever she can to make sure they're safe.
Tagging (because she's going to appear in the OC fics): @shrinkthisviolet @starstruckpurpledragon @daughter-of-melpomene
