i feel like we don’t talk enough about how lando is actually so down bad for oscar

like yes oscar’s middle name is literally heart eyes when he’s around lando and mans straight up giggles and laughs at every things that come out of lando’s mouth, not to mention the cute little scrunch things he does with his nose

but i think it’s so cute how lando tries to actively bring that out of oscar (even if we all know he doesn’t even have to try cause oscar is down for him that bad) like if he sees oscar giggling at something he does he will literally go out of his way and exaggerate whatever he’s doing just so oscar giggles a bit harder

i think the fact the oscar is literally THE embodiment of the standing man emoji actually drives lando crazy and he actually really likes it in a way where he feels the need to kind of break his back just to kind of impress oscar or get a cute reaction out of him, it kind of reminds me of carlos with charles

i feel like lando actually really loves oscar’s sense of humour as well, the dry, sarcastic thing he’s got going on, lando was probably taken aback by it at the start not in a bad way but just because he probably wasn’t used to it as much, because oscar’s different compared to carlos and danny in terms of the energy levels i would say and that’s the thing i think oscar’s sense of humour actually flusters lando in a way

the both of them are so down bad for each other, it’s actually sickening but weirdly endearing at the same time, your fics about them give me so much serotonin it’s insane, they’re so perfectly worded and just so everything <333

the thing about oscar is that he’s got a great sense of humor, but for the most part it’s hidden underneath his usual deadpan stare. he’s not like carlos or daniel who joke easily and laugh easily and make friends easily. oscar takes a bit of time to warm up to people and he’s a rookie on top of that, so i would imagine that he came into the team shy and somewhat reserved, focused on his job and focused on doing well (lando just about confirmed that here by saying oscar’s in his “serious phase”). once lando got to know oscar a little better, once he started making oscar laugh, he immediately started doing whatever he could to draw that same reaction again and again and again—because he didn’t know that oscar could laugh like that, that he could make oscar laugh like that. now that he’s aware, he’s practically addicted, because oscar’s the kind of guy who barely reacts to anything and yet lando can make him laugh so hard that he practically folds himself in half. who’s going to tell lando that most of the time his jokes aren’t even that funny and that oscar only laughs as hard as he does because he has a crush on lando the size of fucking australia? i guarantee that if anyone other than lando tried to say any of that, oscar wouldn’t so much as smile. that’s how he was back in F2—he leveled every dumb joke with the most unimpressed stare known to man. this is why landoscar makes me so fucking insane, because somehow—somehow—lando has oscar giggling. he’s not that funny, oscar, get up.

“sickening but weirdly endearing” just about sums up The Landoscar Experience. i look at them and i can’t believe how down bad they are for each other, but i really wouldn’t have them any other way. absolutely love how you compared them to charlos, because you’re right—lando and carlos are former teammates who do their damnedest to make their current teammates laugh. said teammates always reward them by fucking giggling at their dumb jokes which is just, why, but good for the gays i guess. not sure how you feel about maxiel, anon, and if you don’t like it feel free to skip the rest of this passage—but max does the same fucking thing. he cracks a joke then immediately checks to see if daniel found it funny, and if he did, that’s when max allows himself to laugh. he’s also like charles and oscar in the sense that he laughs at literally everything daniel does, which sounds pretty fair given the fact that daniel’s one of the funniest drivers on the grid, but max laughs at fucking everything. one time daniel said “adios” and max found it hilarious. like. why though. this is a sport full of men who just need to kiss.

Every so often One Piece gets an arc that mostly focuses on lore/world building reveals, biggest examples probably being Reverse Mountain, Jaya and this one: Reverie, as we leave our main characters and focus on the shifting powers in the world

Immediately out of the way, it’s a joy to see Shirahoshi again, currently watching the Fishman Island remake as it’s coming out with my friend and man I still love her so much. Seeing her finally free to make decisions for herself, after everything she went through during Fishman Island, is such a joy to see, she can finally see the real world! And we continue on what Queen Otohime said: the youngest generation is who will be shaping up the world anew

Speaking of shaping up the world: We finally get to see more of the Revolutionary Army!! I have a very special place in my heart for Lulusia. Seeing how much the Revs inspire the people, I get really emotional. Call it growing up in a country still affected by a regime that ended years ago, seeing that a bit of hope can change the mentality of people, even in a fictional story, means so much to me. Especially with the added bonus of Moda’s clothing reminding me of some traditional Polish folk wear. The Revs themselves have great designs, love them all

Reverie itself has one of the cutest meet ups, with the three princesses saved by the Straw Hats finally meeting and immediately becoming friends. Shirahoshi, Rebecca and Vivi are all characters I adore, if I didn’t make that clear during their respective arcs, and seeing them interact and gush over the Straw Hats together is so sweet. It also shows just how much positive change Luffy has brought into this world

There’s this thing Oda does ever since the end of Dressrosa that I like to call the Doflamingo jumpscare. Doffy may not be a mysterious guy, or an actual threat anymore, but with how much he had been set up since Jaya it would be a disservice to his character to just not mention him at all, and that’s how we get here. Doflamingo clearly knows something that us readers can only try and piece together, something that still makes him a danger, something that still makes him important. He’ll make a comment whenever something big happens to the plot that will leave you wondering for days on end what was that about? It’s a really good way to build up hype and mystery, and also to utilise a character like him

And right after we get that, we’re met with a new reveal: Imu. I will be reinstating a point a made in TikTok a while ago, but what makes Imu interesting to me, is how from the first panel you see them, it immediately clicks that this is THE guy. I absolutely adore the dark blob design, which is why it pisses me off so much where people try to give them an appearance. Let Oda do this at the right pace man. In the manga they’re already incredibly eerie, and they get more and more ominous as the story goes along, but I have to give huge props to the anime this time, Imu was terrifying in Egghead

Also remeber Charlos getting punched to oblivion in Sabaody? The first time was so nice we gotta do it twice!! And the reveal that it’s Mjosgard, the guy who seemed like every other Celestial Dragon during the Fishman Island flashback who realized his wrongs and actually tried to use his power as a Celestial Dragon to do good, is great. Mjosgard shows that the Celestial Dragons at their core are humans, which makes it all the more terrifying that their wealth makes them believe they’re higher beings. It’s scary, but realistic

We haven’t seen Bonney in a while, and she’ll become important in a few arcs, but here we get some neat foreshadowing for her and Kuma’s relationship, as well as teases of the Sorbet Kingdom. In retrospect, these scenes are so, so important now that we know what happens on Egghead (unless you’re not caught up and if so GO READ EGGHEAD RNNN)

We finish the arc of with some genuinely insane panels, starting with what started the Rat Haired Shanks agenda, which leaves you absolutely shocked when you first see it. After all, it’s hard to believe Shanks would conspire with the gorosai, right? I’m not getting into Elbaf spoilers but this is important to keep in mind, as it leaves you with so many questions. And then, the absolutely jaw dropping panel of Imu sitting on the throne where no one should be sat, and the gorosai, who are supposed to be the highest power in the world, bowing to them. Literal chills

i love charles. charles is my right hand arm man. my silly rabbit. as my blog suggests. i wasn't instantly big into carlos but he has grown on me a LOT over this season. i was pissed at him after spain but only for like a week? i've come to really really like him over the past few months and he's also besties with my guy from cycling so we would practically be in laws anyway. if its not already clear from my hornyposting of late i am Very into him. he's very silly goofy and also clearly very smart and thoughtful.

it's probably about 60/40 charles over carlos but in a way it's also 100/75? i would never expect a ship blog to be perfectly 50/50 anyway that's insane lol i think we all have biases and thats fine, i personally find it bizarre if you're posting normally about both of them one day and then suddenly switch up and start acting like a day one hater while tagging your hate in the main tags 😐 anyway. this is primarily a charles blog but my main ship is charlos and my second fave rn is carlos so. i also try not to be too negative on anyone on here, if i post negative on someone i will tag it with anti-their name. (reminder to filter anti driver tags they exist for a reason and that is for You so You don't have to see hate. they're a courtesy)

my recent poasting is a product of frustration. AND let me say it's not my concern what other people say on their own blogs, you do you etc, but when i keep getting baseless charles hate and shit stirring bait on my dash because people are tagging their hate posts so charles fans specifically will see them???? no holds barred idc. the level of delusion from certain blogs has stepped up a notch in the last week, so much so that it is very hard to comprehend what they are actually so upset about? it’s me, hi, i’m late again 😭

v, this ask sparked soooo many ideas in my mind honestly i am SO happy you sent it to me bc your brain is >>>>>>

so, here are the aus!!! (they are so long. i was supposed to put little fun facts but i constructed lore. why can’t i be normal? 😭)

coffee shop au (fun fact: i don’t like coffee lol. also they are wlw in this bc we need more wlw simi in my opinion)

seb would be an aspiring f1 engeneer who goes to the a very renowned university in modena (italy), and on the side she is a barist to get some money for herself, while kimi would be a mechanic working for scuderia ferrati in maranello (a stationary one btw)

they meet when one day, kimi accidentally stumbles in the coffee shop (or bar technically) where seb works, and when sees her for the first time as she is taking her order, she gets speachless from her beauty and kinda embarasses herself in front of her

kimi finds that amusing tho, so she indulges her and they start talking. from then on, kimi alway goes to seb’s shop in hope of finding here working there just so she can talk to her more. or, better, as seb rambles her ears off and kimi listens intently, loveing the sound of her voice

when seb finds out kimi works for ferrari she goes absolutely INSANE and she starts to ask kimi so many questions (all of which the finn answers as throughly as she can, completely infatuatueted with the passion and happiness seb radiates). she is so excited that not only the cute woman she definitely doesn’t have a crush on is not the ice cold person everyone thinks she is, but she also works for the team she has always dreamed of joining one day, too (she doesn’t fall in love a bit more after that, absolutely not). that was also the day that seb learned kimi is not actually italian, but finnish (and after that everytime she hears the finnish accent in kimi’s italian, she goes a bit more crazy)

after some time, kimi plans to actually confess to seb bc she can’t hold her feelings in any longer, not when she is the only person that could evoke them in the finn with such strongness (not even her previous boyfriends could do that). unfortunately (or not really), seb had also started to think about confessing to her when her daydreams were starting to actually affect her studies (and when her friends were starting to tease her way too much, the bastards). so one day she shows up to the ferrari headquarters, waiting for kimi to finish and when the mechanic does arrive she is awestruck to find seb there after a shitty day, almost as if the universe had made her wishes come true. it’s when seb blurts out her confession, eyes glassy and ready to be rejected, that kimi truly starts to think she is in heaven. (she really isn’t. she hugs and kisses seb so much after that she starts to feel her lips go numb. they go on a date after that, to kimi’s house, and it is magical)

kimi as seb’s race engineer (the infatuation vibes are through the roof rn)

kimi was always curious about seb, since he was a rookie in toro rosso, and secretly always hoped he would step up to redbull

and he does!!! they meet each other in redbull, seb’s enthusiasm immediately telling kimi that he was different, and he was glad that the new driver would be with him. they hit it off instantly, and the chemistry between them could be very well perceived through the radio (and the fans loved it!!!)

when they got together (after way too much pining) and they announced it to the team, many bet money were exchanged (and seb and kimi were HORRIFIED bc ‘how did they know???’ while they were being the obnoxiously obvious couple ever)

when seb wins the championship for the first time, kimi has to contain his excitement over the radio (bc iceman and all), but when seb comes to the garage after he is literally the first one to tackle him into the tightest hug ever (which is actually when they both start to realize that maybe they like each other more than it would be convenient between a driver and his engineer)

secretly seb had always been worried about when he would go to another team bc he didn’t know if their relationship would have survived being in two different teams. luckily, when he said he was going to ferrari, kimi instantly offered to follow him (and consequently change his whole life for him), and THAT is when seb realized that yes, he was going to marry this man

trans kimi au (first time that i write about trans kimi so yay for that :D)

it was from a very young age that kimi understood that he was not like the other kids, who seemed to be mistaking him for a girl when he was not one. some years later he would realized that he was trans and everything made more sense

he could go into F1 thanks to the fact that he had his documents remade just in time to show that he was in fact a man. for the first almost year of his career he would probably still race with a binder (terrible idea, but he had no other choice) until he had enough money to get top surgery done in a very high end clinic (he was going to g in mclaren anyway, he would have all the money in the world by then)

still, he does like to show neither his body nor his chest off bc insecurity. the one who made him feel better about them is seb, who makes sure to say he loves all of kimi all the time (just in case he forgets, you know?)

he met seb like he did irl too, and i think that seb would be one of the only people he would truly feel safe with in the sport (bc he knows seb is not the type to judge people, so why should he be scared?), and he would be the only driver he’d feel safe to come out to himself (and he was right bc seb, although a bit confused at first, supports him and is willing to learn everything he needs to. kimi finds his enthusiasm very endearing, and maybe he falls in love just a little bit more with the embodiment of sunshine)

i think it could be seb that made the first move here bc kimi put the option of actually being with seb out the window bc he thinks seb deserves better. but he also notices seb’s flirting and at first he think the german is joking, but he isn’t and he finally realizes that when seb asks him out in a spark of boldness after he won a race. ofc kimi says yes and they start dating!!!

omg the coffee shop au has kind of entred my heart now bc it’s so cute 😭

HA I LOVE THAT! okay, and actually i have a really clear headcanon for this one :DD so, the thing is... they don't really have cozy nights in. oh, they try. on the rare occasions they both have time off on the same night, and they get to be in the same country too, then yes, they try. it seems so cute and romantic to have a movie night curled up on the couch together, no? except... that means they have to choose a movie. and to my mind, they would NEVER be able to agree on that, lmfao. charles, angel-faced charles, has been on record that he loves watching horror and psychological thrillers. pierre has been on record that he calls charles a psychopath for liking them. so just imagine these two idiots trying to have a movie night 🤣🤣 charles would be all "no, but this would be so interesting!" with wide eyes and a dimpled smile, and pierre would just be like "you're very cute and i love you but we're NOT watching the fucking jeffrey dahmer show on our one night together, thank you very much" and then charles is all huffy like "well i don't want to watch top gun for the five hundredth time, either" ...and then of course they have to fuck about it 😌👌

that's the core of my headcanon, actually. no matter what they try, they always end up fucking before so much as an hour has passed. like, even if they're just eating together, they probably won't even be able to finish dinner because one of them will jump the other "because you were teasing me by licking that spoon like that, charlo, you cannot blame me" or "how was i supposed to not get on my knees when you look that good cooking for me?!" and... yeah. you get the idea 😆 essentially, they just CANNOT keep their hands off each other, which means that any "cozy night in" very quickly devolves into pierre bending charles over the couch, or the counter, or any available surface, really (and very occasionally, it's charles fucking pierre, too.) they're just obsessed with each other, tbh. and who can blame them 😌

and as for the actual question: WELL, i'm going to give two answers for this one - the pierre version and the charles version. charles, i like to think, is the kind of person who gets cold super easily, but loves snow and wintry weather. (probably because he loves to steal pierre's jumpers and hoodies and beanies etc. etc.) wintry weather also gives him a hundred and one excuses to snuggle really close to pierre, bcs pierre always runs hot. (yes, pierre would totally make a hundred and one jokes about that, btw.) ALSO, i firmly believe that as much as charles loves stealing pierre's things, he'd also take great personal satisfaction in putting some of his own things on pierre - like a ferrari-branded scarf, or beanie, or whatever, under the guise of being a caring boyfriend and making sure pierre doesn't freeze. (pierre puts up with it because he knows charles is secretly a possessive bastard, too, and he loves it. freaks, the both of them, ngl. they're the best.)

now, pierre - i don't want to make him sound like too much of a rich fuckboy, but then again... that's what he is, isn't it xD so my headcanon is that pierre loves to take charles somewhere like ibiza or the greek islands, and spend long hours lazing on a yacht together, alternately swimming, sleeping in the sun and fucking on the deck of the boat (where someone probably won't be able to catch them, but you never know, and that's the thrill of it, of course.) and since the weather is so hot and humid, they have to spend all their time in swimming shorts and very loose (& usually unbuttoned) linen shirts, of course. (if there are even any shirts in the first place.)

so yeah 😆❄️🏖 i headcanon these two as total opposites regarding what types of weather they enjoy - but it's not as though either of them are complaining, hehe. best of both worlds, etc etc <3

ooohhh, this is a good one 👀 and... call me a soppy romantic, and otp-obsessed, but i'm going to go for no. no, they don't.

hear me out, though! they've been friends for so long that i think they just... well, firstly, they already know almost everything about each other. but secondly, even if there was some devastating secret -- they'd be able to get through it. again, they have known each other for so long. when you've been friends forever, you can't imagine your life without that person. you would also forgive them for pretty much anything, and i think that's true for piarles. if one were so inclined, you could make that toxic, but to me it's just kind of beautiful. that security and safety net of "no matter how badly you fuck up, i'll still be there to catch you, because that's what we do for each other. we always have, and we always will." just. yeah. ❤️💙

How would you describe your writing style?

Just yesterday I was talking to my beloved fátima and I was telling her that I write by chance, not by choice. Basically it's like no thoughts just vibes, if inspiration strikes and I'm in the mood to do it, I do it, because I think better when I write stuff down. It's insane and I know it sounds ridiculous but it's completely true, I don't consider myself a good writer at all and I just do it because I enjoy it most of the time or because I needed to say something. That's basically it 😅

Do you have a guilty pleasures in fic (reading or writing)?

I'm a sap. The sappier, the better. I want everything overflowing with romance. I really do like my teeth-rotting fluff. And I feel like I can't write without it, like, it has to be romantic or I die. There's also a specific brand of smut that makes me weak in the knees always and I do enjoy my a/b/o tropes a little too much to be healthy.

Any fanfic tropes you can’t stand?

Huh. This is a tough one because I read pretty much everything! Maybe I don't entirely enjoy the concept of a character switching genders for convenience purposes, like, making one of them female just for the sake of not writing gay stuff? Maybe that's the one.

And I'll admit the whole y/n thing threw me off immensely when I got into the f1 fandom, but now I just don't mind it, and I've read some cool self-insert fics since. Oh! The biggest pet peeve in this trope is the "face claim" thing, because if it's a self insert then imagine yourself in the fic, right. But that would be it.

Is there a story you’ve written that doesn’t seem to get much love?

I'm pretty aware of the fact that people don't tend to read many wips but man, the way my charlos!actors au fic (can't wait to soar) is getting sidelined is making it tough to write in general. And it's not even about the hits, the hits are solid and so are the kudos, but people simply don't leave comments on it and it's like... what am I doing wrong? you know? It's a little frustrating, to be honest. Though I do know that how we engage with media has changed, blabla, but it doesn't stop it from stinging a little bit. Which is why I always encourage people to reblog on Tumblr when they can and leave comments when they can because it really does make a difference in a writer's psyche.

I just wish it had a bit more engagement (but actual engagement beyond likes and kudos) because sometimes people comment ideas that they have about the story and things they want to see on them and that's where I draw inspiration from. Sometimes the muse runs out and you end up just going with vibes only and people help with that if they comment. That's the biggest issue with my writing style, sometimes I'm just in a dry spell and don't know what to do with my life, so I turn to the comments to see if people want to see something. And I write that something because they've inspired me to do so.

Ohoho what a question 😂 I will try to be brief...

The first video of them together that I can remember made me insane was the jenga challenge and the outtakes, which inspired me to make my first f1 gifsets EVER! I'd been watching f1 races for about a year, and following Ferrari on social media, but hadn't really engaged with the content much bc of grad school...

So I consumed all the content I missed, and just fell in love with their dynamic. They make each other laugh, and Carlos seems to really bring Charles out of his shell. And they're both so talented and hardworking, but I love Charles' almost boyish raw talent paired with Carlos' hardwork perseveres ethic.

I think, in general, just how touchy they are and comfortable in each other's space stuck out to me. I don't think I've ever seen such an openly tactile male friendship, especially coming from watching north american sports, where men seem a lot more repressed lol

On top of that, the fact they have the same name and somehow ended up teammates with Ferrari just feels like fate or destiny or something... (but if they were both called Carlos or both Charles, I don't think I'd read or write fic. I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face 😂)

I'm such a shipper tho - every fandom I've been in, I can't help it. I was previously a hockey blog, and in that fandom there were a looot of fics that really made me fall hard for pairings. Charlos was the opposite where there seemed to be sooo much actual content of the two of them interacting, where it almost feels like RPF watching it (I'm like, 'did they really just do/say that??'), but a total lack of fics. So I'm trying to remedy that 😅 (if you knew the number of fic prompts/ideas I have outlined that I haven't gotten to...)

They're the hardest pairing I've ever written for actually bc they're both very charming and funny (their banter is on another level fr), as well as multilingual, which adds another complicated layer. Fortunately, spanish and italian are two languages I'd been learning for years, but I'm by no means fluent, and I know almost zero French haha. Also, they both just have really compelling histories, and it very quickly inspired in me an empathy and love for them.

Anyway, thanks for this ask! (I'm sorry it wasn't brief.) But to sum it up, idk if I can list an exact moment where it clicked - it was just an overall impression I got right away...

i’m so glad u asked ur getting a coherent answer bcs i actually finished my paper

on any given day i have about 10 unique carlando thoughts. and this is a lot bcs in case u missed my last ten of these things i have no thoughts ever. so. they’re different. mainly bcs they r ruining my life. i have convinced my friends with no interest in f1 to care about carlando that’s how serious i am with going BONKERS about them.

i see carlando everywhere all of the time. i think of 9billion carlando aus a day. i send them to my friend who doesn’t know carlando and she is like wow ur a genius. it’s very rewarding.

but ok i guess i will say something interesting i think what is so intriguing abt them TO ME is that when carlos was at mclaren he acted as a sort of… guide? and support ? and solid figure for lando to work out his anxieties against. he reassured lando so much and built up his confidence in really unique ways as a teammate (whcih also. carlos is a good teammate. see exhibit a) charlos and exhibit b) carlando). and all of that. that is a lot of what i see in carlando fanon. which is obviously something i LOVE and think about so much. it’s fascinating.

but in 2022, post GQ “i dissociate at work” interview, i cannot NOT think about — and forgive me for being a narratologist — how it’s FLIPPED. carlos is now in a position where he needs more support and LANDO has his own self assuredness. it’s a phenomenal narrative. insane. it goes so fucking hard. like carlos’s DAD makes him NERVOUS. he feels NERVES. lando meanwhile is picking up 9000 hobbies and publicly being bad at them and doesn’t care what people thing about him. they fold into each other so well!!!!!!!! they can give each other what they need!!!!!

but yeah thank u so much for asking and here are my insane thoughts and i just think about carlando a lot obviously. every day i come up w a new au. college au jane austen au deep space mission au the list goes ON and ON.

"you make my heart shake, bend and break, but i can't turn away." → he's so confused and so conflicted and he knows he's going to get hurt, but he always comes back to carlos. sigH he's so whipped.

10. Creating Realistic Characters with Depth

For many people, characters are one of the most influential aspects of an anime. The same goes for me. There are many types of characters: the protagonist, the main cast, side characters, antagonists, villains, etc. Each contributes to the story in their own way. Making flat, bland, or boring characters can make them forgettable, and therefore, can cheapen the quality of the anime. It can also make it painfully difficult to continue watching the series. Here I will give several pointers on what I believe makes an excellent character and give examples from the One Piece-verse.

1.     Flaws

When it comes to creating characters, I have noticed a general rule to make them great and likable. The audience needs to relate to them. The way you do that is by giving your character flaws. When I say flaws, I don’t mean random negatives about their characters, like when a shōnen protagonist can’t solve a simple math problem to save their lives. I mean flaws that can make them feel weak, directly or indirectly.

When I look at Luffy, many flaws end up making him a better character. The most fascinating one to me is Luffy’s childish nature. He is an extremely idealistic kid who dreams more than anyone. He, at first, doesn’t care nor understand the consequences of his actions. Luffy is also kind-hearted and always pushes his principles before his dream. He tends to scream a lot and wears all of his emotions on his face. Luffy is also a terrible liar. If I described this type of personality to anyone, they would undoubtedly think of a child.

This childish behavior is one of Luffy’s characteristics that make him flawed. There are also several times when acting like a child, particularly not thinking of the consequences of his actions, cost him severely. We have the time Luffy almost attacked the Drum Island civilians after they shot Vivi in the arm, meaning Nami wouldn’t get a doctor for her illness. The time Luffy punched the Celestial Dragon, resulting in him almost losing all of his crewmates (although in this case, I think most people would have punched Charlos. He deserved it).

And the most recent one where he attacked Kaido after “killing” his crewmates, which he ended up losing the fight with a single blow and ended up in prison. Luffy makes dumb mistakes. It plays perfectly with his character, but he is ultimately flawed.

Now I personally don’t relate to Luffy in the way that he is childish (I am the maturest), but seeing Luffy suffer from the consequences of his flaws and understanding that Luffy isn’t perfect is enough to understand that he is a human with struggles, similar to myself.

 2.     Personality, Psychology, and Philosophy

I think personality, psychology, and philosophy (PPP) are some of the most significant ways of distinguishing characters and are the source of a particular character’s general fascination. Every person in the real world has their own unique PPP. When you are in the world of anime, not only is everything overly exaggerated, but it is also unrealistic in all sorts of ways. With these two weapons, you can explore all types of themes, topics, and ideas. So when creating characters in an anime, understand that there are no limits to unique characters. Two characters can be very similar, but there should always be something to contrast.

Not only is PPP used to contrast characters, but it can make them feel more realistic if you can manage to connect all three along with their overall character. Let us look back at Luffy. First, we have Luffy’s personality. Luffy constantly yells, loves to mess around and laughs, loves food, is very dumb, is a terrible liar, always shouts out his dreams, loves to imitate his friends, and is a kind-hearted person.

Closely related to his personality, his psychology is that of a child’s perspective. Finally, we have his philosophies. Luffy believes that everyone should chase their own dreams and freedom, no matter how difficult it is to get there. He also believes that dreams should be achieved with the help of close friends. Luffy also believes that everyone is equal, seeing no one below or above anyone else. Once again, these views and ideals are somewhat childish.

Now that we have all the three major pieces of Luffy, we can fully understand his character’s greatness. All three of his PPP are connected with his childish nature. This makes his character seem cohesive, consistent, and more realistic. All of Luffy’s traits align with his character. Everything about Luffy is connected in a way that would make sense, like a real human being.

 3.     Contrasting, Paralleling, and Mirroring

This is one of my favorite techniques in creating characters. You can contrast, parallel, and mirror (CPM) many things in the series: themes, the plot itself, certain philosophies/ideals, characters, the list goes on. This one applies more to side characters, antagonists, and villains than the protagonist, but it can happen.

Now let us think of the antagonists and villains in One Piece that relate to Luffy and his beliefs and somehow align with one of the rules of CPM. Let’s start with my favorite, Charlotte Katakuri. Katakuri is similar to Luffy in terms of his devil fruit. But Katakuri is far superior in every way: his devil fruit is better and awakened, his haki is better, and he has more experience. Here we can see that Katakuri parallels Luffy a bit, but he completely contrasts in his ideologies and motivation.

Next we have Donquixote Doflamingo. Doflamingo believes that he is the ultimate king. He truly believes he is better than everyone, classifying everyone into three basic categories: kings, humans, and lesser beings. But even in this classification, Doflamingo believes he is on top of the kings as well: he thinks he’s a god. Therefore he believes he has the right to toy with the world, as symbolized by him making puppet gestures and physically controlling people, especially because he was mistreated after Doflamingo and his family left Mariejois. Doflamingo’s beliefs all contradict Luffy’s. First off, Luffy believes everyone is equal, no one above and no one below. This contradicts Doflamingo’s god complex. Luffy also believes that everyone should chase their own freedom, which Doflamingo believes he has the right to take away.

We also have Black Beard or Marshal D. Teach. Black Beard mirrors Luffy in a lot of ways when considering their ideologies. Black Beard, like Luffy, believes in the power of dreams and ideals. When we first see Teach, we see him acting like a child, arguing with Luffy about the food and drinks, and Luffy does the same. I think this is Oda showing us that Black Beard is practically and precisely like Luffy. Both of their dreams are to become the Pirate King. The only difference is their approach. As I mentioned earlier, Luffy wants to achieve his dream with the bonds he made with his friends. He doesn’t care if his crewmates are useless or not; a friend is a friend in Luffy’s eyes. On the other hand, Black Beard wouldn’t mind using money to hire strong “allies.” He even hires some of the most dangerous prison inmates. Black Beard is also crueler and is willing to do whatever it takes to reach his goal. If you pay attention, you might notice that Black Beard became a Yonko in a flash, simply because he obtained one of the most powerful devil fruits out there. However, we always hear Luffy saying that there are no shortcuts to become the Pirate King. In one perspective, they look almost identical. When you shift that view, you realize how much they contrast from each other.

Finally, we have Akainu. Akainu is the exact opposite of Luffy. Luffy believes in absolute freedom, while Akainu believes in absolute justice and control. Akainu would kill his own when they showed fear or opposed what Akainu believed was “right.” There isn’t much to talk about Akainu, mainly because we haven’t seen much of him. But from what we have seen so far, it is clear that Akainu and Luffy are complete opposites.

All these different villains are excellent and make clear antagonistic forces against the protagonist simply by contrasting some of Luffy’s ideals. But remember, you can also use CPM with themes on other types of characters. Take one of the reoccurring or significant themes in your story and create a character that uses CPM on that theme.

 4.     Connecting Character Ideas to the Story

This is something I love to do when creating my characters. Basically, I grab an interesting theme or an aspect in a character I want to explore and find a way to connect it to my story. There are many cases when I think of a fascinating character, but it wouldn’t make sense if I randomly added them to my story. So I just connect an event that could likely happen in my story to the reason why my character is the way she is.

One time, I was listening to a song, and the interpretation I got out of it was fascinating to me. It had something to do with abuse, insanity, and OCD. I really wanted to add a character that explored the ideas of abuse, insanity, and OCD to my story, and luckily for me, it was pretty easy to add it into my story.

Now my character (let’s call her Miku for now) doesn’t seem out of place because I connected her character into the story by creating a backstory that was plausible in the world I had created. She suddenly became one of my favorite characters I had created.

5.     Consistency

I think one of the most essential things in a lot of characters is that they remain consistent. Of course, you can pull a 180 and make an Eren Yeager, but if you don’t want to change your character that drastically, make sure they are consistent.

 Once you have created your character, make sure you fully understand their flaws and PPP and make sure whatever type of significant actions they take, it perfectly fits their character.

There were many times in the past when I was able to accurately predict Luffy’s actions and words. I thought I was some sort of genius at first, but I realized soon after that many others could do the same. It was when Luffy rejected his grand fleet where Luffy’s consistency became clear. After fully understanding that Luffy wants to become the Pirate King, simply because he wants to chase the ultimate freedom, why would he accept the grand fleet?

He doesn’t want to become anyone important, and he wants everyone there to chase their own freedom. This is consistent with Luffy’s philosophy of freedom and his childish psychology.

In conclusion

Following any of these principles can help to add intrigue and quality to your character. A regular human is complex and deep, no matter who they are. By following these suggestions, you can create characters with the complexity and depth of real human beings. Make your characters like Pinocchio. Make them strive to be a real boy or girl.

Part of the appeal for me is the idea of Connor keeping his general canon story, but Nora still being around in S2, and they bond by speaking Spanish and her being able to connect with his experience growing up in a Latinx community in a way that no one else can. The show really failed to lean into Nora’s Latina heritage/identity IMO, and if she had lived through S2, that could have made the stupid Connor in Mexico plot a tad bit more interesting.  Also, I feel like it would’ve driven Miles and Bass insane if she was hooking up with Connor. A little delicious payback for all the shit those two put her through.

well, firstly, anon, this is tumblr dot com, not maths class. i've said repeatedly, and i will say it again, that i reserve the right to be as hypocritical and insane as i want here. after all, it's tumblr - if i can't be insane and hypocritical here, then where can i?

example: anyone who watches my blog at all during a race week will know that i am NO max fan. not in the slightest. and yet i will occasionally reblog maxiel fic recs. why? well, because they're quite often quite well-written. at the end of the day, i'm a fangirl and also a bisexual disaster, so if there's a well-written gay fanfic, the chances are relatively high that i will read and enjoy it. also: i think there's quite a significant difference between fic!max (who i occasionally enjoy) and driver!max (who i despise quite passionately.) fic!max has a lot of background and nuance that can make for fascinating characterisation, and as a writer, i just enjoy that.

now for carlos specifically: please let it be known that i do not hate him the way i hate max. not even close. i am, however, a dedicated chirlie (charles girlie) and anyone who gets in the way of charles doing well is automatically in my bad books. i do try to be at least a little reasonable about it, though, and yes i absolutely do realise that a lot of major fuck-ups this season were ferrari's, not carlos' (see: silverstone 2022.) but yeah, unfortunately the way carlos has handled a lot of interviews this year really rubbed me up the wrong way, and i read one too many comparisons of carlos girlies calling him more talented than charles as well. which.... babe, no.

like i said at the start, i am fully aware that i'm a hypocrite lmao. but i'm not HERE to be unbiased. we are watching a sport - everyone is biased towards their favourites, and i'm not going to apologise for that.

and as for carlando and piarlos - i treat them the same way as i would maxiel. carlos might not be on my favourites list as a driver, but he's an interesting character to explore in fic. i am at the end of the day a writer, and i like interesting characters to explore, so yes, i am quite happy to post carlando or piarlos or very very occasionally even charlos content (because akira is the best and might convert me one day. we'll see.)

anyway! the last thing i wanted to say to you, anon, is just a gentle reminder again of the PURPOSE of fandom. it is an escape from real life, somewhere where we can come to have fun. the same rules and restrictions and - dare i say it - morals that we use irl do not apply here. they just don't! fandom should be about what makes one happy, and nobody really has the right to police that, i don't think.

so tl;dr - anon, i am here to do whatever it is that makes me happy in that moment. if that's carlando and/or piarlos, then that's what i'll do. if you have a problem with that, then i'm happy to point you in the direction of the Unfollow button, lmao - curate your experience! see what you want to see. have fun!
