So I have only been on tumblr for 2ish (or exactly 2 years today I just found out) years and often forget to check it. I am only here for the media and Yizhan candy, mostly. Otherwise I have been mostly off (dislike for) social media for many years. As such, I don’t really look at my feeds on other sites and on here, I do but only when I remember I’m here.

So just so you know, if I ever comment to you, it stems from me seeing your post and having a thought in the moment. If you feel uncomfortable about that, please just delete my comment. I’ve been told that is something that can be done. I will never know because I already can’t figure out how to find past comments or posts. To me, tumblr is the least intuitive of all the soc med sites to navigate. It literally just took me 10 actual minutes to find the “create new post” button.

Additionally, I’m trying to learn etiquette for this site but overall, I realize we don’t actually know each other. We don’t owe one another anything except the general respect that goes with being humans.

My asks are open (but not anonymous b/c I won’t engage in online fights or shipping wars or whatever anonymous commenting lends itself to). But I’m generally happy to engage in anything we’re both willing to attach our online names to.

My current fandom loves are Asian dramas (specifically CQL/The Untamed and KinnPorsche), RPF Yizhan shipping and the individual careers of Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan. You don’t have to be a Yizhan shipper but again, I won’t engage in shipping wars. If everyone is respectful, you do you.

I thought I'd share my experience on relocating to Turtle city.

After the cut if you're interested. I wrote more than I wanted.

My story begins with watching Word of Honor. A good enough show for T!kTok edit fun. Many videos seemed to compare the show to the Untamed which I discovered was also a drama based on a BL novel.

Interested, I purchased the book, devoured it whole in a few days. The drama lasted the same amount of time. I fell head over heels for LWJ. Found the story fascinating, searched for more information and came across BTS on YT.

Imagine my disappointment after watching countless videos following the actors around, most of which were in Chinese, I wanted set design, costume design, script info.

To ease the pain, one week later, I watched the Untamed again. Where did WWX come from? Was he there the whole time? Had I been too blinded by LWJ to notice this breathtaking human being front and center?

Bearing that in mind the BTS wasn't so bad now. I happened upon countless interviews for the show featuring other characters. Momentarily satisfied, I paid attention to the actors instead of characters for the first time. Focusing more on LWJ, I found out his name and pursued him. Loved everything I saw about WEB.

Now that I knew what to expect, viewing the BTS felt more comfortable and enjoyable after a third watch of the series. I even stepped out my comfort zone to watch compilations. This is the part where things begin to shift. One compilation I came across involved the actor for WWX walking near the LWJ actor and waving him over so they could sit together on the smallest bench with no space in between when LWJ was only one space away ( I say actor because that's who they were to me at the time). I mean, what was the reason? They didn't immediately talk to one another. They just sat there together.

Of all the BTS I'd seen, I don't know why this one struck me. It seemed ridiculous, and I laughed even checked the comments to see if anyone else found it hilarious only to see them shipping the actors.

In the years I've been absent from fandom, I learned shipping has been twisted from when I was a teen. To ship, people don't automatically assume the person doing the shipping means for them to be a couple. People ship a pair because they find them cute or because they're friends. Couple shippers try to distinguish themselves by renaming their purpose as supporters/believers instead of 'shippers'.

I brought this up to say when I see people shipping an investigation is mandatory. I'll be honest, curiosity takes hold and I deep dive to see the reason. My thoughts on Yizhan in the beginning was less than favorable. This had nothing to do with believing or not. I didn't want to open up to the possibility. I was done with shipping. Too many panicked shippers in the past made the environment depressing. Nowadays, people are way too emotionally invested in celeb potential relationships. There's nothing wrong with caring. My comment is directed at those who become upset or worried constantly over the littlest things.

For example, my other fandom:

Fan: I'm so sad person A didn't send a bday greeting (online) to person B. They're clearly over. They haven't said anything (online) or posted a pic (online). I give up. This must mean xyz. I'm so upset.

If this sounds targeted, please step back and evaluate your needs, your emotional/mental health is worth more.

Call me crazy, but I'm unable to support a ship without equally supporting both parties. Preferring one over the other is fine as long as the non bias receives equal standing. For example, my first RP ship I noticed loyal shippers go crazy for the couple, but fall into the trap of comparisons and going hard for one of them as a result. They eventually turned into solos and despised couple shippers when they posted about the other one. When I become a fan of someone, I like them and who they date is their business. If I'm lucky enough to be a fan of both then I may choose to ship (I've only ever shipped 3 RP.). Regardless, I'm happy for them no matter what. I never panic on 'what ifs' because I'm in it for the person.

I decided to give you a glimpse into my mindset with shipping. As I was still very much solo biasing LWJ and by extension WYB. I attempted to steer clear of turtles because I wasn't committed to both. All the while digesting multiple pieces of information related to Yizhan. I'm a mystery wrapped in a conundrum with a juicy skeptical center.

Side note. Thank you Tumblr Turtles for your wealth of knowledge and hard work.

To be clear, I think my dive into WYB came easier due to the fact ZZ was filming. He appeared less on updates, and thus I never noticed him. While I took in info about Yizhan, I still had a one track mind.

Things snowballed when I watched the Yuehua concert clips on YT. People were debating on DD's skills (he's phenomenal to me. To each their own though) so I looked into WEB's music and ended up realizing he sang on the Untamed soundtrack. I watched performances including one with GG. My initial interest of ZZ (aside from his insane good looks) started with music.

If you're curious how this went, well I started watching LOF, but abandoned it at episode six for DC. Sealed GG in my mind as someone who I'd purposely search for from now on. Relief flooded through me as there were scary moments such as abandoning TLP and disliking JD (due to the story not acting). Surprisingly SBMS saved some of my original thoughts on whether I'd be a true fan.

Side note. I've since learned with long cdramas to watch them to episode twenty because that's when the story starts to take shape so TLP I'll return eventually. I started watching LOF again (I don't care so much about these random characters).

I wish I could reveal a defining moment where I decided to pack up for the move to Turtle city. I think it revolves around figuring out how much I liked GG who seems down to earth, genuine, kind and a great actor.

The rest unfolded smoothly and became obvious when I stopped thinking 'them' as reference to turtles and realized somewhere along the way I cheered for turtles or felt incredibly embarrassed.

Side note. No matter what fandom I'm in, whenever 'fans' ask people close to the supposed couple about whether they're in a relationship or the dreaded 'touch this, say that', and then freak out about it. Regardless of claims of validity, I find this practice insulting to the potential couple. I will forever be embarrassed to be associated in any fandom that partakes.

That's it. My turtle story. I hope it wasn't too boring and long. I was always the person in college who cried about the twenty word essay then had to figure out how to delete five extra pages.

Oh, I'm not really a blogger. I only post about movies and shows I've seen. I repost a lot with the added comment thrown in here and there.

Also, I save nothing. I'll never know where anything is.

I love all kinds of fanfiction (my Drarry obsession is unbeatable). Yes, I've read Yizhan and MDZS fics.

Fanfiction Wrapped - 2022

So, last year when I got my Spotify Wrapped, I had this idea of doing something similar just with fanfiction because 2021 was a year in which I read a lot of fanfiction, enough for it to amount to a substantial part of my reading.

So, starting in 2022 I started maintaining a list of all fanfiction read. I initially planned to do this for every quarter of the year but that didn't pan out so here we are at the end of the year.

I'm a reader and I read a lot but 2022 was the first year in which I read more fanfiction than books. I read 122 books against 195 fanfics. I read a whopping 3,065,648 words written by fanfiction authors and I thank you all for the wonderful time I had this year reading your fics.

My Fandoms

So, in 2022 I read fics from 11 fandoms and the breakdown is as follows:

The Cherik fandom was absolutely what got me through 2022. Whenever I needed anything to get my mind off things or cheer myself up, I found myself a Cherik fanfic and like magic, my mood improved. I'm a little late to this party but now that I'm here I'm not leaving!

The second fandom that I read a lot of fanfics in was the YiZhan fandom which is an RPF fandom. I know it isn't for everyone but I discovered the works of fireflavoredwhiskey who was hands down the most prolifically read fanfic author of 2022 for me.

The second most prolifically read fanfic author was ikeracity whose Cherik fanfics are very popular in that fandom and for good reason.

Interestingly enough the first fic I read was a YiZhan one and the last fic I read in the year 2022 was a Cherik one.

New Fandoms

2022 was the year of fanfic for me because I read a lot of fanfic in fandoms I discovered this very year.

Everlark - the fanfiction pairing between Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen which led me to discover their ship name for the first time was a first-time fandom for me. My interest in this pairing increased following my re-read and re-watch of The Hunger Games books and movies this year and I'm glad I did.

Shirbert - the pairing between Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe was an unexpected joy. I re-read all the Anne of Green Gables books this year and finally read 'The Blythes are Quoted' which led me to watch the show 'Anne with an E' a TV adaptation of 'Anne of Green Gables' and after watching the show I had the best time delving into Shirbert fanfic.

Ikersi - After watching 'The Eternals' this year, I fell in love with the movie but especially with the relationship between Ikaris and Sersi. I literally love the movie and the paring and I did my fair share of squealing over that fact on tumblr.

Surprisingly, the majority of my first-time fandoms this year feature het couples which is a new thing for me. I have also come to realise how vastly different the treatment of queer pairings is to straight ones in fanfiction. It was a sea change for me.

Of course, my biggest fandom this year - Cherik, was also a new fandom for me but I have read so much of it that it really doesn't feel like it.

Gallavich - My last first-time fandom for this year was Gallavich featuring Ian Gallagher and Mickey Milkovich from Shameless!

Conclusion

I had a blast this year and I hope this momentum continues. Given the number of Cherik and WangXian fics on my radar this year, it's a pretty sure bet though I don't believe I will have a more prolific fanfiction year than 2022, at least not in the near future.

COMING SOON - So, over the next couple of days, I plan to share my favourite fics from the fandoms I read from this year. I really love fic recs because they help point me in the direction of fics I end up loving but are hard to find if you are sorting through all the works by yourself. So, in the hopes of helping someone just like me there are going to be lots of fic recs in the coming days.

I'm a relatively recent WOH fan and have seen a fair amount of RPS candy. I'm trying to discern if they're to be believed or not, so I want to compare the actors behavior + fandom interpretation against BJYX's. As I have not watched The Untamed myself, I'm very curious about the opinion of a fan like yourself - if you're comfortable with sharing (I know there's been quite a history of fan wars, and I solemnly swear I'm not trying to start a fight). Objectively, between BJYX and LLD, which is more likely to genuinely be in a romantic relationship? Or are they both just as likely? Why do you think so? Feel free to respond either privately or publicly

Hey there @wingered, thanks for your question! I answer this as part of my Ring Saga series, linked here.

In summary, I personally believe that both BJYX and LLD are real. Unfortunately, there were some leaked private information that I ran into last year about BJYX... and I don't really want to speak of it but it helped solidify them even further for me. Not that I needed that to confirm or anything. In terms of YiZhan, they just acted/looked really in love. I don't think it's possible for us to really know for sure until the day c-ent and the CN government / society says it's okay to be out and gay. Even where I am in the US, it's still dangerous for LGBT+ people to be out, so there's no way to 100% confirm.

I've spent a lot of my recent life looking at and reading BJYX candies, and they formed the basis for my RPS-shipping life lol. Although, like I mention in my Ring Saga series, I don't really believe I'm an RPS (real person shipper) fan because I've only shipped real couples. And after beating back my internalized homophobia, the idea that same-sex couples must meet a greater standard or bar than heterosexual couples to be "legit," I realized that from what I've seen - BJYX and LLD are more married than actually married celebrity couples imo.

Like @rainbowsky has written before, gay people exist, some people are not straight people, and especially in the entertainment industry - lots and lots and lots of people are still in the closet/are open secrets/etc.

In terms of LLD/JunZhe, they've shared very similar "candies" to BJYX actually. Like pet names, sharing clothing, the elusive rings, blatant flirting during filming on their respective dangai/danmei adaptations. Even the similar situations that their SO's have been subjected to (227 for XZ and 813 for ZZH), you can visibly see how upset they are about how helpless they feel to help the one they love.

And it's just really obvious to me when two people are flirting? It makes me almost want to throw up at how ridiculously in love they are? And I want more? lol. I'm going to be compiling a lot of my archives on LLD to organize my thoughts more on this blog, and the first in that series is the Ring Saga. This is when I was convinced that they're actually in a relationship.

It's almost eerie that two very popular dangai adaptations also had their co-stars fall in love IRL. I wouldn't expect this to happen all the time, but I'd like to posit this idea. Maybe I'm working in an industry where my personal identity has to be hidden for my own success. And maybe I run into a like-minded individual, and I find them attractive and fun to be around. We flirt. Get to know each other. Because our characters are meant to be so intertwined and so in love, we have to spend a lot of time talking to each other, building our chemistry. And maybe that chemistry takes off, it's not unusual, people fall in love on set all the time. So my co-star and I end up having lots in common, we share hopes and dreams, we're both relatively unknown at the time, and just want to do our best in our work. And then the show wraps, it premieres, and it's a big hit. Shooting upwards in fame can be isolating, it can push me more towards my new friend, who is in the exact same situation as I am. We talk more and get closer, maybe rekindle things, and make lifelong promises and exchange rings and maybe buy a house and a dog / cat together iunno hahaha. When I put it this way, it seems like it's just something that can naturally happen. Maybe it happens more often that we'd think.

i respond to a lot of names in this fandom, it's all good. on twitter, i'm @oldobsess... if i could do it again, i'd probably pick a new handle, but i had never used twitter before this fandom, so didn't know what i was doing! my first screen name was "too old to obsess over 💚❤️" and then sometime later i decided that there was no shame in being an older fan, so i changed it to "never too old to obsess over 💚❤️" 😂

on ao3, i'm "overthinkingthis" — i deliberately picked a different handle entirely because i had never read or written fics before, and wanted to keep my fic activities separate, like a secret side thing. that did not last long. again, shedding the shame!

on tumblr i'm "overthinkingyizhan" but i'm new to tumblr so there's not a lot going on there yet.

how long have i been in the swamp? i watched cql in march 2020... my family watched it first, and i had no interest in watching with them until i saw xz's face. i literally asked, "why is that man so beautiful???" i watched the entire series twice, read mdzs a couple of times, and then one day i was listening to wuji and thought, "are the actors singing this as a duet?" i googled them, was horrified by 227, amazed by yibo's dancing, and then started mainlining the official bts and all the fan analysis videos on youtube. i was so charmed by how happy they looked together, but i'd never shipped anyone in my life before, so wasn't sure what to make of all the shippy stuff. i came to yizhan twitter in april 2020 to find out what happened to them after weibo night (aka "divorce night"). what finally threw me into the pit was seeing video of yibo looking teary in a ddu clip from the first taping after 227... i remember thinking, "oh my god, he really loves him."

yes, this is my first and only fandom! i was very lucky to find really good friends in the fandom when i came to twitter, and they have been such good guides. that's one of the reasons i love what you're doing with this project (and i very much vibe with your "omg how can i organize all this information" panic because that's how i ended up on ao3!) i could go on, but let me answer your next question:

▪️ Where are you most active/ favorite place to dabble in fandom-wise? (Twt, tumblr, ao3, pixive, privetter, etc)

i'm most active on twitter as @oldobsess… i've posted more works on ao3 than i ever expected to, and i have a tumblr that i hope to use to archive more of my collected fandom candy if i ever find the time

▪️ I’ve also been very fortunate to be in friendly fandoms, but being this your first, were you surprised by the toxic side of it when you found out?

yes! i mean, because i learned about 227 right away (it had just happened when i started watching cql in march 2020), i learned about antis very early on. i don't really understand why anyone takes the time to hate a character or celebrity when they can spend that time on the character or celebrity they love, but sadly, i know now that there are people who do that in every fandom.

i was also very surprised that dynamics is a thing some people get very worked up about, especially with an rpf ship where no one has any idea what people do in private. i've tried to be more mindful about it now that i know it's a thing, but i wish everyone could assume more positive intent when it comes to this particular topic. personally, if i see or read something that isn't my thing, i don't stop to comment and i don't like to do callouts in public. (that's what private chats with friends are for!) instead, i scroll on by or use the back button. i don't like to give fandom wank more exposure by posting about it publicly. there's enough negativity in the world as it is — i don't need to add to it!

i'm also aware that as an rpf shipper, i have to be careful about where i do my screaming. i don't do it on posts by official accounts (whether in comments or qrts). also, i follow a fair number of solo accounts because we share a love for either xiao zhan or yibo, but i am careful not to say shippy things on their posts... i think that's basic courtesy, because they're entitled to do fandom the way they like. if i don't like the way they do it, i scroll by or i can block if it's really something i don't want to see. some solos block me, and i prefer they do that than to say unkind things to me.

basically, i try to follow the golden rule... how would i feel if something said X to me? i feel like i've had a relatively drama-free fandom experience by following these guidelines. fandom should be fun, so as long as you're not hurting anyone, you do you!

I very much share the same opinion about how to handle 🐜.

Now that you bring up the topic about the dynamics, I think it’s a cultural thing b/w Asian countries and Western countries. They simply have different backgrounds of how they came to be and have very different view points. They can’t really be compared. But I still love both styles.

▪️ What was your first motivation to start writing/ drawing about them?

before this fandom, i never read or wrote fic! and i had no idea rpf was a thing! to be honest, i was a little weirded out by the idea of reading or writing fic about real people. 🙈 but then after spending hours chatting about ggdd candy with my first fandom friends, i felt completely overwhelmed by the need to organize everything they were sharing with me. (also remember that the pandemic lockdown had just begun, so i was going a little stir crazy and needed something to do with all my restless energy.)

one night, we were musing over when ggdd might have first gotten together, and one of my friends told me that a significant minority of cbxg (chinese ggdd shippers) believe they got together BEFORE cql. i demanded to know more about this theory, and after countless hours of drowning in candy from 2017, i decided i had to write a fic with this alternate timeline or i would lose my mind.

i opened an ao3 account and started posting "we are made to love" in june 2020. https://archiveofourown.org/works/24669283/chapters/59612737 i had no idea what i was doing! i just wanted to write something about all the candy for myself and to amuse the three fandom friends i had then. 😂 but then what started out as "maybe i'll write 15k on this, 20k tops" turned into a 20-chapter, 83k work that took me six months to post in full.

i swore all along that i would write that one fic to get it all out of my system, and then never write again, but that did not happen. these two beautiful and talented individuals are just too inspiring! i've created or co-created over 50 works since then, but wamtl is still my best-known work.

▪️ How many fics/ fan arts have you written/ drawn so far? Which one is the one that you’re most fond of and why?

i've written 45 fics (including two drabbles that i drew art for, and one anonymous work). i co-wrote an additional eight fics with friends. i also posted two works (a recipe and a knitting pattern) that were part of an art/fic collab that i did with some creative fandom friends.

i don't know how to answer this question (about what fic i’m most fond of)! i've been asked before, and my answer changes all the time. it depends on my mood, and also on what it means to be fond of a work. sometimes a fic is bound up in the feelings i had when i wrote it, or who i was writing it with or for. if you asked me what fic of mine i would most want to reread, that would also depend on my mood. do i want to laugh or cry?

i am really fond of "talk to me," which is the fic i HAD to write after i saw an article about a japanese man who rented himself out as a "rental-san" to keep lonely people company... i was absolutely seized with the idea of writing yibo as a "rental-ge," hired by xiao zhan to listen to him talk about a boyfriend who keeps breaking his heart. it's also a wholesome t-rated fic, and soft getting-together fics are really my jam.

i'm also very fond of "lying in the dark (no sunshine)," which is my angsty break-up/make-up fic. it's based on the movie "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind," which is one of my favorite movies. i am also in love with the concepts of memory and forgetting, and this fic is a long meditation on those themes.

i'm really cheating now, but i am super fond of my tattoo and tentacle aus ("under my skin" and "wrapped up in you" ) because i wrote them with and for dear fandom friends, and so both were so much fun to write. when i re-read them, i think of these friends, and the warm feelings i have for this fandom.

Ooh, I’m glad you mentioned “Wrapped Up in You” cos it’s been one of my first fics I read when I came into this fandom and was rec’ed by none other than Ren and it’s one of my fave fics for so many reasons! 😆😆😆

▪️ What’s your favorite trope to write/draw or a new one that you want to try this year?

"established relationship" is my most common "additional tag" for my fics! i just adore writing yizhan all soft and secure with each other, even if they're sharing insecurities or bickering. to me, they fit together like puzzle pieces, so no matter what i put them through in the story, when i get to the parts where they're settled and happy, with all the trust and fondness that comes with that, the writing feels effortless.

among the projects i want to finish these year is a getting-together rom-com, a sci-fi au, and a fairy tale! occasionally i think about writing more "canon" fics based on real-life candy that they throw out there, but i also feel like i've written so many of them already, and i have a lot of other ideas i'd like to try to write.

oh, i should say, since this is supposed to be a guide for baby 🐢, i've dumped a ton of links to candy in the endnotes to a lot of my fics, especially wamtl and the fics in the "extra chapters" series. since i started writing fics as a way to organize my thoughts and the fandom candy, i actually do continue to revise the endnotes as i come across new sources (and if links go dead, i try to fix them). ideally, i would post all these links to tumblr so people don't have to go to my fics to find the links, but there are only so many hours in a day!

▪️ Are you bjyx, zsww or lsfy? Is this dynamic important to you?

i would say i am lsfy. i do not care about who does what physical act. i do care about characterization, and to me, that is completely separate from how the characters have sex. if a fic is written well, and the way yizhan is written feels real to me, i don't care how they have sex (or if they do at all).

one of the things i've really enjoyed about writing yizhan fics is that because they are both men, i don't worry about gender baggage the way i might if i were writing a m/f fic. i have the freedom to flip things around to fit the story and i don't spend emotional energy worrying whether having a character cook, cry, or apologize — or bottom — is gender-coded. honestly, i spend enough time irl worrying about race and gender, so i like that these are not issues i need to think about when i write yizhan.

so yeah, at this point, i have written all possible dynamics (and with tentacles, you really can do everything, everywhere, all at once 😂)!

i do try to tag my fics for dynamics (the actual sex act, not for vibes or characterization) so that people who *do* care can find what they want to read. i'd rather that someone who cares a lot about such things is able to avoid reading a fic of mine that doesn't suit their tastes so they don't feel compelled to write me a nasty note (also, readers, don't do this. there's a back button for when that happens).

That seems to be a very important issue in this fandom, they even have names for each dynamic. That a first for me and it was another thing that surprised me as a new 🐢.

▪️ What’s your most fave 🍬? Have you written about it? Where do you get your 🍬 sources?

i don't know if i can pick a favorite candy! like renren, i love the tattoo cpn, and so i wrote an entire fic about them having tattoos ("under my skin," in which xiao zhan is a tattoo artist and yibo is an idol who meets xiao zhan and suddenly wants to be inked all over his body haha).

i am fascinated with kadian, which is a kind of number language that's popular in china. i honestly thought it sounded far-fetched the first time i was introduced to it, but over the course of the years i've been in this fandom, i've seen enough evidence to know that kadian is real and yizhan use it (for example, 520 means "i love you" because the chinese numbers read out loud (wo ai ni) are a homophone for 我爱你, or "i love you" — may 20 (5/20) is a nationally-recognized couple's day in china for that reason)... yizhan (and all of their endorsements) post at 8:05 or 10:05 frequently because those timestamps represent their birthdays. there are many examples of different codes in wide use in china that have shown up in yizhan's various socmed posts... and there there are all the 18s (一八 sounds like yibo) and 3s (三 sounds like zhan).

i do incorporate kadian in nearly all of my fics in some way (and there's a whole chapter about it in wamtl), often because i’ll have yizhan post not-so-secret kadian messages to each other over weibo and oasis.

i even embed kadian codes into the word counts for nearly all of my fics, i'm that obsessed.

twitter followers know i post about kadian a lot too!

my first fandom friends have been such excellent sources of candy... @ShirasagiS @VenOceanofStars were the ones who spent hours talking to me about the candy that cbxgs had unearthed when i was writing my first fic. they helped me so much with translations (translation from chinese can be so difficult, especially when it's xiao zhan who's posting... he loves the word play and can get very literary in his wording).

other good accounts to follow to stay on top of weibo/oasis posts, endorsements, past appearances and such are @wxyzybxz @bjyxiaos @bjyxnoa @sunhuas

i also follow some solo accounts... although they don't *intentionally* deliver candy, they always have great content about xiao zhan and yibo.

the latest hot topic!? i think it has to be yibo's new song, his performance, and his many, many posts about them! it's ticking all the boxes for me... a GORGEOUS, heartbreaking song, a beautiful and emotional performance, and a tidal wave of posts about it, with kadian, possibly hidden messages, and yibo looking incredibly handsome.

just today, he posted pictures of himself in a hoodie with a rainbow logo and his ever-present 🦴 necklace, and combined with a song and performance that already feels like yibo baring his soul in a way we haven't seen before, it's just SO MUCH and i am just in awe of how comfortable he is in his skin, how unapologetic he is about who he is... and how safe and secure he must feel to be able to shout all this out. i realize i could be completely deluded, and that none of this has to do with love, or that maybe he loves someone who isn't xiao zhan, but after all that i have seen over the past few years, i'm not sure how else to harmonize it all if they aren't szd. if nothing else, it makes me so happy to imagine that they've really found a love like this with each other, and for me, that's been the joy of being in this fandom (especially these last few years, with all that has been going on in the world).

anyway, i like to tell people that i fell into the wangxian pit because of xiao zhan's beautiful face, and that i tripped and fell into the yizhan pit because of yibo's lovesick face. everything about yibo's "like a sunshine" song and performance is just making me even more emotional about them and the epic romance that i see between them, and it brings me so much joy.

▪️Now that you bring up about the the 🦴 necklace, do you think the necklace is actually XZ’s gift? Does it really have a 王 engraving on it? Do you think the 🦴 necklace some kind of statement?

i'm not sure if it's really engraved with a 王... but i think the 🦴 is (1) a gift from someone special because yibo wears it so frequently... you only come back to a piece of jewelry that often when it has great personal meaning... especially when you are someone who wears fancy accessories for work all the time. it has shown up in inappropriate times too, like under a period costume on set, when he's not supposed to be wearing personal jewelry... that tells me it means something very special, because he just won't take it off. and (2) i think it's from xz because he has called yibo a puppy (gouzaizai), there was that time yibo's co-star from LoF said in a livestream that he can't call yibo gouzaizai because he's not xz (which tells me that other people know about xz using that term of endearment)... also xz has called yibo clingier than jianguo (comparing him to a pet), so yeah... i think it's really only xz who could give yibo a 🦴 necklace 🥰

could it be another person? i guess if i am wrong about them being szd, it could be someone else... but to me that would mean he's in a relationship with someone else. i have jewelry that other friends have given me that i wear on occasion, but the pieces that i wear all the time are the ones my husband has given me.

In between this answer and the next question, we both became a crying mess remembering the beautiful and meaningful dance performance of Yibo’s LtS at the New Year’s Gala, till we regained our composure, lol

▪️ How did you come to meet your good friends when you first started out in fandom?

when i first came to twitter in early april 2020, i really didn't know where to start. i wasn't a twitter user, and i'd never done the fandom thing before. i lurked for awhile, following solo accounts (at first, just xfx, because i was really worried about how xiao zhan was doing... it was still very early after 227). i stumbled over ventus's (@VenOceanofStars) posts, and spent a few long nights scrolling her posts of old candy. she noticed that i was liking literally hundreds of her posts, and dm'd me to ask me "how old is too old to obsess over ggdd?" and that's how we became friends. 🥰 she introduced me to @ShirasagiS and the three of us spent a lot of time just talking about ggdd and c-ent generally, since they are fluent in chinese (i am also asian, and although i've been perpetually trying to learn chinese, it's been a slog!)

i also found @BjyxObsessed because i thought her pinned tweet was hilarious and it spoke to me (back then, it was all about the shock of falling into this shippy pit as an older fan), and because i am not a shy person, i slid into her dms and forced her to be my friend. 😂 she introduced me to the world of rp fiction, and her sweet and funny fics were among the first i read (in any fandom!)

that's generally been my pattern... i see people around who might share an opinion or a demographic (a lot of my fandom friends are older fans with families and irl jobs) and i might dm them to see if we click. sometimes we do, sometimes we don't (and that's okay!)

when i finished posting wamtl and realized i was not done writing after all, i helped put together a discord server with some other writing friends, a place where we could encourage one another as we prepared for an upcoming fic exchange that we were all participating in. that was a great way to make friends... gathering around a common creative interest, be it writing or art or maybe just yelling about the boys.

some of those writers have since moved on, and some new writers have joined... it's sad when friends go on to other fandoms or to other interests, but i'm told this is a natural ebb and flow of fandom, and so i've learned to roll with it and keep making new friends.

somehow, nearly five years after yizhan started filming cql together, new 🐢 still find their way here, and i like to think that that's a testament to how beautiful and real their story feels.

▪️ Okay, I have the exact same question. How old is too old? Because I regard myself as one of the older 🐢 age-wise. I was VERY relieved to see several 30+ or 40+ in fandom 🤭

well, i don't like to tell people how old i actually am because i feel like putting a number on it might make people wonder if they're too old (if they're older than i am)... i prefer the mystery! but yes, i've been told that my saying i'm an older fan makes other older fans feel more comfortable with being here, and that's nice to know!

i do have readers and followers who i know are older than i am, and i think that's awesome!

▪️ Lastly, a piece of advice for newbie 🐢, please!

i would second renren's advice to respect the boys, their business partners, and their co-stars/friends and don't write shippy things on their posts. think of the golden rule before you hit "send" on things... how would you feel if you were yibo or xiao zhan and people were yelling shippy things on your work projects? for that reason, i try to keep my nonsense within this fandom bubble... i don't hashtag with their names, and i don't interact with solo accounts unless i *know* they're tolerant of cpfs.

the other thing i would say is to spend your energy positively. being excited about yizhan's projects and their accomplishments does not mean you have to trash someone else... that's a really bad look, and can only make trouble for them (and especially don't do that if you're using them as your profile picture because it reflects badly on them).

finally, don't evangelize. if people see what you see and want to find out if they're szd, they'll find their way here. arguing with people and trying to "prove" to outsiders that they're together is bad form... remember that we really don't know anything. i might personally feel they're szd, but if other people don't see it, i respect that too. THAT SAID... if they trip and fall into the pit the way i did, i'll do what i can to make them feel welcome so they can enjoy a positive and joyful fandom as i have!

Things Yizhan Made Me Do

It's BXG Day today! 🐢💛

To commemorate the occasion, I thought of making a list of 13 out-of-character things that I've done since falling into the fandom. (OK I'm a bit late I meant to do this sooner, the day is ending soon in a couple of hours).

1. Start a blog

And a public one, no less. I had a blog when I was in my teens but that was private, like a personal diary. My day job already involves writing so off-work I would usually like to indulge in mindless activities. Now, here I am, maintaining a Yizhan blog. I have not even used Tumblr prior to this but I'm enjoying it now, rambling about our fav boys. Writing is not a chore if it's about them.

2. Join a fandom

I joined a boy band fan club once upon a time, some 15 years ago, but I was never as invested in it as I am now with Yizhan. Back then it was just buying some merch, attending their concert/autograph sessions, listening to their songs. Apart from work, dog mum duties, personal relationships, other hobbies like kombucha brewing, most of my free time is now spent on the fandom. My Netflix account is crying. There is just so much to do and catch up on (I'm not complaining). I also enjoy interacting with and learning from other bloggers here. Antis are no fun and some industry news/developments/hate messages are upsetting but ultimately, you curate your own fandom experience. And I choose positivity and rationality.

3. Indulge in RPS

I don't ever 'ship'. What is 'ship'? 😆 I was always a dutiful audience, just enjoying whatever drama series and moving on after that. I started with CQL like most people and I didn't even notice/like GGDD until much later. Didn't even set out to 'ship' anyone but now I'm a self-professed turtle. SZD is SZD, and anyone can see something special between them if you keep an open mind. I wrote about my SZD reasons here previously. That said, GG & DD are individuals, each with their own successful careers. They come first, the ship comes second. That I'm very clear of.

4. Use Chinese apps

Gosh, my phone and tablet are now full of Chinese apps. I used to have only WeChat cos I needed it for work but now I have Weibo, Oasis, Douyin, WeTV, MangoTV, Youku, etc. Some of them are not even available in the app store so I had to find alternative sources to download them. haha..I even have paid membership for some of these apps. And now, browsing Weibo daily becomes a routine. If you wish, you can just get stuck browsing Weibo for a long long time. It's entertaining.

5. Read fan fic

I only started about 6 months ago but now I'm hooked and fics are largely the only thing I read these days, apart from news. But I only read Yizhan or WangXian fics (p.s. calling for fic recs of other pairings!) I know some might have different feelings about fan fics but to me, I really just see them as fiction, with characters (and sometimes traits) bearing similarities to GGDD. Similarly, I separate the platform from the incident so I have no problems going to A03 despite GG's incident. I just enjoy seeing the characters named XZ/WYB having happy endings in many different timelines and universes. While most of the fics I read are explicit (by design), I don't use them as tools to play out certain fantasies or to think of GGDD in a sexual manner. In fact, I really hate fics that have little substance and just go into the explicit parts without plot development. I like those with interesting premises too, like one I read recently where XZ is a serial killer and WYB is a police officer investigating the case but also in love with him. I do have plans to share my list of fav fan fics some time down the road so keep an eye out for it!

6. Willingly read Chinese

Yes, Chinese may be my mother tongue but I don't use it much in daily living unless I have to. I also find it tedious to read Chinese cos the characters are just so squashed together. If I have a choice, I will always pick English. But now, I read so much Chinese from my daily weibo browsing. I even read fan fics in Chinese! Who am I? On the plus side, I think my Chinese comprehension and translation skills improved. I also picked up some internet lingo used by Chinese netizens, which are pretty interesting like doi, 🐮🍺, 🖍. My all-time fav is yyds.

7. Act like a cougar

In real life, I have always maintained that younger men are childish. At least those I have encountered. But look at me now, fangirling over two younger men (I am closer in age to GG, but still..). I even jokingly call them my 'China Boyfriends'. I look at them very respectfully most of the time.

8. Buy merch

Seriously, once you start, you can't stop. At least that was what happened to me, although I'm still quite selective when it comes to supporting their endorsements. I usually go for consumables like food, cosmetics vs collectibles cos I'm more practical. Also, GG says to support their merch within reasonable means so that's what I'm doing. Just buying things that I'm interested to try and not because it has their faces or names slapped on it. In a way, this suits me cos I like trying new brands and stuff anyway.

9. Keeping a Yizhan archive

Photos, weblinks, videos, songs, fan fics list..my phone is full of these things now. I think my Yizhan photo gallery is only second to the folder with my dogs' pictures. But how can you resist when we are blessed with new pics of them almost every week?

10. Camp for livestreams

I'm lucky I live in the same time zone as the boys so I don't have to wake up in the wee hours of the morning just to watch something. But that's the thing, being in the same time zone sometimes make me feel like I HAVE to watch that thing live because, why not? Why wait? Not shy to admit that I once watched a live programme in the middle of work but I made sure I finished what needed to be done. I think so long as we don't let these livestream schedules run our lives, there's no harm in camping for them.

11. Watch c entertainment

I am one of those who used to pass over Chinese productions, simply because it's a Chinese production. Not in a scoffing manner but I'm just genuinely not interested in them nor the celebs. I was more of a US/UK production kind of person, occasionally Korean/Japanese. Now, I'm learning to enjoy them although I just watch those with GGDD in them. No energy to follow other Chinese celebs anyway. The other programme I'm contemplating watching even if it doesn't have them in it is Who's the Murderer (GG was only in one of the cases) cos I like the premise. On the flip side, now my sis and partner keep making fun of me cos to them, all I do now is "watch China shows". That is so not true. Or is it?

12. Write fan mail

I wrote a letter to GG once. A long-ass letter. I hope he read it. That's all I'm gonna say. 🙈 hahahahaha

13. Desire to visit China

China was never on my list of to-visit places. Just wasn't interested. I have been to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou a few times in the past for work but even then, I never felt the urge to revisit for leisure. Now, I wanna visit GG and DD's home town, visit Chongqing to see the graffiti wall with Bobii Zanbii on it, eat mala hotpot and try out their sauce recipe, attend BXG events, dine at the CQL restaurant... Watching TTXS also made me realise that there are many beautiful places in China with natural landscapes and all that. I used to be clouded by my disdain for the regime and some behaviour of its citizens but now, I recognise that the country is separate from the regime or a smaller group of poorly behaved citizens. China is a beautiful country and I would love to visit some day. I will fly over immediately on my own if someone gives me tix to ADLAD!!

A little update

Hi, guys! Just to give you a little update here:

1. I think some of you have noticed that I’m less active these days on tumblr. I’m attending a very time-demanding degree, which takes up most of my time. Besides, I have an occasional job (and those weeks I work full time, so my study schedule and work schedule overlap, which is definitely funny, yes) and I’m invested in taking care of my family’s health and mine as well.

2. Our best boys’ new BTS have lately caught me either studying, working or sleeping, which is why I’ve seen none of them (mildly sad about it). However, I’m enjoying fandom discussion about them, and I’ll be reblogging the content I find more relevant.

3. I’ve finally done some house-keeping and I’ve created a proper main blog, since my old main had a confusing name. My main is now called @evehere, just so you can identify me when I reply in my posts!

4. I’m still answering asks. I think you deserve a thoughtful, as detailed as possible response as I can produce to whatever question you have about yizhan, and I have a lot of fun putting facts and data together, which is why I’m taking my time with them. However, since some of them were from months ago in reference to old posts, I’m having trouble to write a response, which increases the time it takes me to answer.

5. I’m also working on some posts about disclaimers, my take on support/shipping, some things we shouldn’t normalize no matter how we love them and I also want to finish the hotpot series (which shouldn’t take long, once I have a little bit of time).

6. If you’ve read till here, no matter whether you’ve followed me from long ago, recently or even if you don’t follow me at all, I want to say: THANK YOU. As a new turtle I don’t know how it was at the beginning between all 3 fandoms and when exactly “Great Fandom war” started. But I remember my days when I was a solo and I was brainwashed by some people (I think I just got into toxic solo space) that because of bxg ggdd will never be able to play in a film or drama again. And I remember when they were previously asked many times if they want to act together again and they said yes. So it seems like they had chances if not shippers or was it just talk and in Chinese industry any main costars usually don’t act later in other films to avoid rumors and something like this? I just want to know when exactly as they say bxg we t out of control?

Hey Anon!!! 😊😊 Well, I could tell you that I was actively watching everything that happened at the time of the "Great Fandom War" (the movie's name?), but the truth was I had a mental crisis due to DDGG and I didn't get much into it ... I was almost never in environments toxic, because I preferred to be alone and not be confused, until I get here.

I think the c-bxg and even the i-bxg try to protect them in our own way, just like shrimp and 🏍️do, maybe some toxic fans 🏍,️🦀 (shrimp??) and 🐢, get a little crazy and that creates quite a few problems. On the other hand, we normally don't make big riots, unless something happens in the future that makes it happen (I hope not), after all we are 3 million now, imagine putting everyone in that, it would be a disaster.

I have never heard that we have gotten out of control, if it happened then it has never reached my ears, we try to be as silent as possible, especially c-bxg and if the c-bxg get attention they try to hide it, for not to cause unnecessary trouble...

About GGDD not being able to do dramas together because we ship them or whatever, they started shipping themselves first. DD was the one who created "Yizhan" officially and possibly they knew about BJYX they didn't seem really upset about anything especially DD who as I always say could have closed the supertopic as soon as everything was over, they are both the ones who have to deal with everything mainly, the problems with the solo fans and 🐜.

Personally, now I wouldn't mind if they close the supertopic, if they have a lot of problems around them in the future, if everything gets out of control I think it would be better to close it, but if they don't think it is bad or annoying, we will continue to actively support them from the supertopic and those who can do more, do so.

I’ve always wondered if WYB and XZ had previous relationships (even pre-debut, especially for XZ), or even ships like theirs (e.g., with co-leads or their bandmates). If you know, could you shed light on this and whether there’s any difference you see between Yizhan and their other ships?

I unfortunately don't know much and can't find it out easily either since I don't know Mandarin. I asked someone I trust, though, and who knows more so here goes~

Both of them got shipped with their band members. Yibo also got shipped with ChengXiao and MengMeiqi. There were rumors (and hate) about Yibo and a girl named QiMeihe that Yuehua has made statements of more than once - the last time they refuted the rumors was in August of 2019. Yibo once said that he had a relationship that lasted six months. Other than his members, Zhan-ge got shipped with LiQin before. There are currently supertopics for XZ with DiliReba, with YangZi, with XuanLu and with WZC. That last one got shut down (or surpressed, I'm not entirely sure how it works) by XZ's Studio after all the traction it got, following the rumors that spread on Zhan-ge's birthday last year. He had at least one relationship in college before. There are photos of him, even getting a ring back then. I don’t know if he and his girlfriend actually got engaged or not but either way, they didn’t stay together.

I have seen interactions between ggdd and their band members but not much for the other CPs. We are bound to see more of that, though, once gg starts promoting YS, for example. I am certain seeing more interactions will just confirm what I already think; that ggdd subtly stands out because what they have is more than professional or even friendly. I also think it’s worth noting that while Yibo showed annoyance or disdain when it came to all of his other CPs, he has not made any negative comments about bjyx or bxg. On the contrary, the way he leaves codes that only bxg will understand tells us how aware he is of everything that’s going on in the bjyx supertopic. Ggdd don't engage in fanservice, likely because they aren't comfortable pretending when it is actually real. On the other hand, they were comfortable with their members. Those interactions seem like the kind of teasing that brothers do while the teasing between ggdd has some genuine undertones, so to say. Like for example, they tease by praising each other but who knows how much of that is honest admiration or attraction. Also, dd indirectly called gg "sexy boss" (- 大佬) on 191101 to obviously tease him, and yet interestingly enough, when he called him "dalao" (大佬) on 190729 and gg did not react other than to lean forward, it strongly seemed to me like that's a nickname dd uses even when they are alone. But once he uses it in public, it can easily come across as just teasing.

BJYX and Lovely Writer Similarities = AU Please?

Everyone is screaming about Word of Honor still (which I watched and enjoyed), and here I am crawling back into the hole that is The Untamed / Chen Qing Ling, only this time, I’m getting suckered into the endless pit that is the actors’ ship (BJYX / Yizhan / whatever other names for this ship).

I generally avoid shipping real people, hence why nothing hit me the first time around when The Untamed was released in 2019, but holy shit this ship does not need any CP campaigns... Although I’d never assume the romantic status of real people... personally, I’ve been convinced that there really is / was at least a one-sided something from WYB (Wang Yibo) to XZ (Xiao Zhan).

I’m also currently watching the Thai BL Series, Lovely Writer, which is a refreshing criticism / self-aware plot on the BL and idol industry itself. (Alright, it still has some typically cliche BL elements, but it’s much more manageable than the age old BL tropes. And consent is continuously celebrated! Yay!)

And all that leads me to the scream the following:

I need a Lovely Writer AU of BJYX. I don’t think I can ever bring myself to personally write Actor RPF 😅.

Similarities:

Cute, slightly self-conscious, more reluctant, and older ‘bottom’ (if we had to label) (Gene in Lovely Writer, Xiao Zhan in BJYX)

Hi! It's great that you personally dont like talking about ggdd's dynamics but taking a chinese term but getting rid of its chinese meaning is just a bit disrespectful. Idk why you're so insistent on using a dynamics ship name if you dont like dynamics, but saying it's something that needs to be 'reclaimed' is ridiculous and ever so slightly sinophobic. Why not just use yizhan, the name that ggdd used themselves?? Or wangxiao, another name they used themselves??

You didn’t specify which post you were objecting to, but I’ll assume it was this one, where I said:

For these reasons, I really love BJYX as a concept, and I use it in that spirit, not it in a top/bottom way. You will find a lot of my posts tagged with BJYX. I don’t do that because I think DD is a top, I do it in the spirit of reclaiming the term.

So, what exactly do I mean when I say, “reclaiming the term?”

BJYX 博君一肖 stands for Bo Jun Yi Xiao, which translates roughly to, “everything I do is to make you smile.” It also contains characters from both DD and GG’s names. 博 and 一 from DD’s name, and 肖 from GG’s. It is a play on both of their names, and a cute Chinese idiom meaning “getting a smile from someone.” For this reason, fans thought it a cute name for their ship.

This is the translation and the meaning of the term. This is exactly the spirit in which I use it. So no, I do not ‘strip the Chinese meaning’ from the term. I adhere to its original meaning and usage - as do many fans both in China and internationally. In fact, you are very likely to find avid BXG both in China and internationally who have no idea whatsoever that BJYX is used by some people to delineate sexual dynamics. Because BJYX is the original and most commonly used term for the fandom.

Over time the fandom broke off into different ‘houses’ based on sexual dynamics, and that’s how we ended up with BJYX, ZSWW and LSFY. However, functionally within the Chinese fandom, people from all ‘houses’ tend to still congregate within the BJYX supertopic because, as the ‘main’ and original ship, it is by far the largest and most active supertopic.

So, BJYX is often treated as an umbrella ship not just within the international fandom, but also within the Chinese fandom.

Is it true that mess back in october with xz and jc actor where rumors about them being together were spread by xz and yb shippers because they were mad yb didnt visit xz for his bday instead? I just heard about this on twt and how xz told people to stop making up fake stories about him and his friends? Few were saying this included all the rumors about him and yb too 😬😬

when it comes to rumors about who’s to blame for what i always take it with a pinch of salt cause the c-fandoms (and twt fans, honestly) throw so much shit at each other and don’t always wanna take the blame for the bad apples within their own circles. sometimes fandom fighting is seen as an opportunity for antis to swoop in and start a hate campaign against an idol they dislike and the fans are too busy blaming each other to realize it. a recent example was after the b&j ice cream shoes, a hot search started trending of “wyb comes out”. wyb’s fans were blaming shippers for starting the hot search claiming they didn’t care about him and only cared about their “evidence”, even though a lot of bjyx fans were also spending the day helping clear the hotsearches cause they didn’t want something like that to cause a problem for him. it’s not uncommon for people who want to smear idols to start rumors about them being gay and if someone smells blood in the water they’re gonna strike. also recently the bjyx fans also recently cancelled a lot of huge LED displays they were buying adspace for in celebration of the c/q/l anniversary coming up because it could undermine social distancing and they didn’t want xz or wyb’s name to be attached to poor behavior during this time, so it’s not like they don’t care about anything else other than themselves.  as for this particular example, all i know for a fact is that xz/wzc had their own couple supertopic that xz dismantled after this rumor started, however, he’s left the bjyx supertopic alone even after this incident and the a*3 incident despite how much bigger that fandom is (it’s been the top couple supertopic for like a year with over 2 million people in it). honestly i can’t come up with too many reasons why he’s keeping it up if this portion of the fandom is that much of a headache. they’re not in the same company and they’re not promoting anything together anymore (which are usually the reasons why c ent indulges these shipping supertopics in the first place) and their own individual fanbases are much larger, and quite frankly would probably be very thankful to see it gone. 

edit: also in 2018, wyb did visit xz for his birthday (with xl, she posted pictures) so i don’t know why bjyx/yizhan fans would be getting angry about that. not that couple fans don’t lose their shit over minor stuff, but in this case they did actually see each other

Is there a reason you censored yizhan in your last post a/ bjyx shippers? I'm pretty new to the fandom and I was under the impression that it had a positive or at the very least neutral connotation because that's the name WYB and XZ chose to be representative of the two of them (I think this was on a game show? I don't remember the specifics). Does it mean something I'm unaware of? Love your content, you were one of the first blogs I followed once I got more invested in XZ and WYB!

oh my god thank you 🥺🥺 so from what i’m aware of, some of the ship names do have weird t/b meanings but i honestly don’t really bother with them. i do tend to use yizhan bc like you said, it feels more neutral. i only censor the ship names when i’m talking about toxic shippers so they don’t find my post easily lol
