watched a majora's mask analysis earlier today with my fiancee. my verdict is that I actually really enjoyed the op's interpretations, but that I wished that they talked more about mm's literal level and what one can get from it, rather than talking about those events as if they are strictly metaphor. yes, of course the metaphorical layer of the game is rich to dig into, but it's also such an open-ended and surreal game that it's difficult to nail down every single distinct metaphor that can be derived from its events. which is why I consider it necessary to discuss the way the literal layer presents itself and what sort of motifs and ideas exist there as a baseline before you begin looking at it as metaphor

#narrates #zelda #^ longwinded way of saying that i think that both the impeding inevitability of death #the way the characters react to it #and the question of whether or not termina is even 'real' or can be saved are all intensely interesting aspects of the game #regardless of metaphor. you are existing in a world where you empirically cannot change anything permanently until your very last cycle #and in a world that is potentially not real or is doomed in other ways. but your task is still to help these people and save it #which is interesting even before you get into the symbolic spiritual and metaphorical reads of the game #again thats not to say those reads are bad. i think those reads are what people find the MOST meaningful about mm #most of mm's strength lies in its atmosphere and its ability to convey all these overlapping ideas #its surrealism and the richness of its ideas is what allows for an audience to draw all sorts of meanings out of it #it's just also very meaningful in its LITERAL events and I enjoy that quite a lot!#also... I feel like you heavily have to acknowledge death of the author when dealing with mm #you cannot rely on what you think the author intended. because thats both unclear and does a disservice to the games open endedness #which means that your analysis tends to be far more meaningful when you discuss how IDEAS are embedded in the game #and how you personally constructed meaning out of that #rather than relying on your ability to convince me that your specific read was completely what the devs were thinking #idc about the devs tell me about YOU!#this video was way better than most at doing that but I just prefer mm analysis that is heavier on death of the author #edit: i don't mean you should discount cultural context. thats part of the ideas embedded in ths game #i just mean that I don't like arguments that rely on the idea that the devs INTENDED that cultural context to shape the games metaphors

#fat man on a beach #b.s. johnson #classic tv #documentary #htv #michael bakewell #aled vaughan #a frankly incredible and truly unique piece of television. according to Johnson's biographer‚ the novelist Jonathan Coe‚ this film was #described in tv listings at the time as a documentary about Porth Ceiriad‚ a rather beautiful beach on the Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales #it.. is not that. i can only imagine the baffled reactions of an idle audience tuning into HTV in 1974. true‚ this is entirely filmed at #Porth Ceiriad‚ but any element of travelogue (or even really of documentary) is dispelled almost immediately: the first lines heard are #those of an unseen narrator who tells us we are about to watch a film about a fat man on a beach. 'Do you really want to watch that?' he #asks incredulously. it's a challenge‚ the first of several from Johnson‚ who spends the next 40 minutes variously pottering about the sands #mugging to the camera‚ reciting poetry (his own and others; literary and dirty) and baring his soul. I've never seen anything quite like it #I'm not sure that much has been made that is quite like it tbh. Johnson was a fiercely original‚ brilliant mind; he was a novelist #a poet‚ a critic and a filmmaker. he was also‚ when this first aired on uk tv‚ dead. a few weeks after completing filming on this‚ his #final work‚ he sadly took his own life. i mention it not as a grim factoid but because it is a vital contextualisation of this film; the #play has been described before (and play is not the right word) as a sort of loose form manifesto from Johnson‚ a laying out of his own #peculiar philosophies and interests in a disjointed manner‚ peppered with asides and distractions and filming mishaps (all kept in the #final product). for me‚ the feeling was inescapable that this was like viewing a suicide note. whether Johnson had already come to some #conclusion on that front or not‚ the fact is that his own obsession with morbidity‚ with the spectre of death and of decay (it runs right #through his work‚ particularly his work in film) transforms this into something almost confessional. there's a section of the film where #the author recalls witnessing the aftermath of a traffic accident‚ a motorcyclist thrown through wire fencing and sliced like cheese #the absurdity of the comparison is lingered on‚ Johnson almost stalls and appears to lose his train of thought (briefly discussing instead #the modern mass production of cheese) but he also seems clearly affected‚ delivering the tale in a halting‚ reverent tone #not that this is all darkness and gloom; it's just as often funny‚ or surreal (the film frequently cuts away to a bunch of bananas‚ only #later explained by one of Johnson's biographical recollections) and includes visual puns‚ bad jokes and a few moments of physical comedy #the writer doesn't seem distressed. rather‚ he seems... if not at peace‚ then as though he has come to terms. confident in his own beliefs #and ideals. but perhaps that's reaching too far‚ or reading in what the viewer wishes to read in. the sad fact is that Johnson took his own #life‚ but he left us with a body of work unlike almost anything else‚ and which is still being celebrated and analysed today. rip bsj

#I jest but I HC that Artemis' paranoia somewhat genetically comes from his mother's side whereas his issues with dissociation and #reality assessment is more genetically on his father's side of the family #The twins occupy this weird space in the family where they were born after a lot of things exacerbating mental illness in the family were #less present than when Artemis was young due to the Fowl empire #like my personal version of this is watching my aunts' kids grow up in a house where they were diagnosed with autism and adhd really really #young bc their mothers work in early ed. and are really knowledgeable about how to apply that in their home so that they have the support #they need #and let me tell you watching young autistic relatives exist and interact w kids their age who are so much better #about including 'different' peers socially then when I was a kid? that is so fucking surreal #I am very much an 'autistic Artemis truther' and I know Fox has some posts about Tim being autistic too during an era of the Fowls where it #wouldn't have even been 'masking' to borrow a contemporary term so much as just learning Not to Act Fucking Weird ever and performing this #whenever there is someone else present #but to return to the point of this post Artemis and Angeline will see a 5-star resort with insane security and go 'what I'm hearing is that #when the sun sets we will be in the Purge'#Artemis' form of paranoia is fascinating because he experiences it in the 'struggles trusting people and can spiral and believe people are #out to get him and harm him when that is not realistically assessing a situation' but also has horrible risk assessment which is so realist #realistic lmao
