We don’t accept ourselves for who we are or how we are but we expect other people to accept us how we are. And when you ask this question “If you could change one thing in your body what would it be ?” to like your friends, family and you listen to their answers and you think they’re stupid to change anything about their body and you go “noooo are you nuts you’re perfect. looks fade its what inside that really matter” and all that. But we never really say that to ourselves, right? We’d consider ourselves stupid to think we’re perfect or our face is perfect and we’re kind and funny, but when someone else says all this to us we like to believe them and it makes our day and you start to think that yea probably im not fat, or im perfect im funny because they think we are. We don’t believe our own voices and our eyes but we believe theirs. And we believe we are perfect and beautiful only because they tell us that we are. And if you say you don’t need people who cannot accept you for who you are. Would you abandon yourself as well?

What would you change?
If you had the opportunity to turn back the clock what would you change? I suppose to answer that question depends at what point in our life we’re asked and how we feel about our past.
If you asked me that same question 7 or 8 years ago, I would have had given you a different answer, but realistically I’m not sure that if any of us turned back the clocks, things would change, or we’d be any more equipped to deal with our lives, so the outcomes would be the same. Without our past though, there is no understanding, and without our understanding there are no possibilities for us to change things, so that we’re able to look at new possibilities.
If I were to turn back the clock, I would want to understand my life earlier, so I could have been more prepared to deal with what I’ve had to live through, but others will have had to make changes too for anything to change. By the time we’ve understood and learned what it is we’re supposed to learn, time and our lives have already moved on.
Perhaps then, there’s no real point in thinking about turning back the clock unless everyone else does the same thing and wants to change. That way we will all make significant changes that help us shape better relationships with each other.

We asked people in Bristol what they'd like to change about the housing market
Interviews Aliya Mughal Portraits Gareth Iwan Jones
Kathy
“I think the problem is one where demand exceeds supply. Bristol is even more expensive than London these days. They’re putting up flats everywhere but maybe they need to have more brownfield sites where they could build cheaper properties that would provide for more social housing, those are the people that need helping. I know people who’ve got no chance of getting a house.”
Vanessa
“I bought with my husband years ago, we were in a good position and could afford to. I have a brother-in-law who is 40 who can’t get on to the market now – he still lives with his parents. My 42-year-old brother is the same. The difficulty is trying to get together the deposit and pay the price of houses these days. There’s also the issue of a monthly commitment, the lack of mortgage options, I don’t know what the answer is to make things easier for people. I’ve got two boys aged 12 and 13 and I can’t imagine how it’s going to get any better for them either.”
Gwen
“I live in the same house I bought in 1997 when me and my husband had jobs and could afford to buy. Before that we rented. I think there should be more renting options because renting gives you a lot more flexibility – if your rents change you’re not stuck. And the more people who rent, the more chance there is of rental prices coming down.”
Steve
“We’ve been renting off the council for ten years. It was about an 18 month wait at the time, which is what you’d expect. I think it’s a lot tougher now though. A lot more people expect housing off the council, while the council can only supply so many houses. I’ve known elderly people who live in three-bed houses where perhaps they should be helped more so they can move to somewhere smaller, and then the council could move people who’ve been on the waiting lists for bigger houses.”
Angela
“I feel quite strongly that it’s estate agents who are to blame for inflating prices. They just push the market up. There ought to be more regulations. In our area, it’s a seller’s market but the prices are unaffordable. It’s especially a problem where you have estate agents who are writing to sellers and landlords telling them to push up their prices, which isn’t fair when you think that wages aren’t going up. I don’t know how we’d afford to buy the house that we have now in the current situation.”
Nicki
“I think it’s hard for first-time buyers to get on the market given the size of deposits. Without the help of parents I don’t know how people will get on to the ladder. We bought 20 years ago when it was achievable, although it still felt tough at the time. Since then house prices have risen so much that I’m not sure what the solution is – or whether there even is one.”
Faysal
“It’s not a good time to rent or buy at the moment because everything is so expensive. I work full time in a hospital as a technician and I still can’t afford to buy anywhere. I’ve been checking the market for the past three years – last year, a three bedroom house was priced at £120,000. Now, the same house is £220,000. How is anyone meant to afford the mortgage or the rent, as well as food, bills and paying for your child’s education? The house prices need to be brought down. We pay our taxes, the government should do something about it.”
Dan
“I’ve been renting in Bristol for a few years and it’s a nightmare. I’ve just moved to Radstock because I couldn’t afford to live here anymore. I bought outside of the city and have just sold that and am renting it out while I rent again as well. Estate agencies and landlords need regulating because they push the prices up so that it makes it impossible for people like me to buy. As a landlord I appreciate you have to make as much money as you can but not at the expense of other people, that’s not fair. There needs to be more control at a central and local government level.”
Tom
“The renting process should be monitored more rigorously. Landlords should not be able to get away with discriminating against people on benefits. It would be interesting to have a market or agencies that catered for people on benefits. I think local government needs to be given more power to moderate these things so housing is more affordable. I know of people who have been homeless who are moved into housing that is completely bare of any essentials – no bed, no cooker, no fridge. When they ask for help, they’re told they’ve been found a house and that’s all the support that’s available. People shouldn’t be treated that way.”
Shaun
“I’m a graduate and I’ve got a decent job now where I can afford to buy but I struggled to get a deposit together for somewhere in Bristol, so I ended up buying in Liverpool, where I’m from. I think the problem is with estate agents artificially inflating the price of houses. The government says it will make more affordable houses but the reality is that there aren’t enough builders in the country to take that on. The 100 per cent mortgage offer is one thing that could help, so long as people can afford it. Just building more houses and selling them for a price that is higher than they’re worth is not going to help anyone.”
Margaret
“We’ve owned our house for 15 years, whereas for youngsters just starting out, I don’t think there are enough houses. Me and my husband do voluntary work driving people around who can’t get about themselves about and we see that there’s a limited amount of social housing. I know someone who has been struggling to find social housing because there isn’t anywhere suitable given her disabilities. There should be more social housing built for older people with disabilities, more bungalows.”
Susan
“I think it’s too expensive for first-time buyers to get on to the market. We bought our property years ago and it was quite difficult then to afford something for £40,000. I earned £3 an hour then, I earn £7 an hour now but I think you need to be earning at least £10 to afford houses that on average are £200,000 these days. If you’re going to have any chance of getting the deposit together then something needs to be done to raise wages, others people don’t stand a chance. I only think it’s going to get worse – Bristol is becoming like London, it’s one of the most expensive areas, which is a shame for young people who if they do get a mortgage, will be paying it into their old age.”

Pre-Homework :)
Tomorrow's lesson is about beauty. Beauty of the soul, of the physical body, and of the heart. In preparation for this I would like you to think about what you would change about yourself. If you could change anything, what would you change? It can be anything, your nose, bone structure, the way you speak, religion, sexual orientation, ANYTHING! Once you finally decide what you would change I want you to ask yourself why. Come up with a reason why and write it down. I want you all to think deep and hard about what you would change and why you would change it. Think deeply Beloveds!
