Outie Dylan, swallowing his pride and deciding to tell his innie that he’s actually pretty cool despite the wife smooching debacle: I’m proud of you and while I’ll respect your decision if you want to resign I think you should make it work there because I don’t want you to die

ohhhh outie irving's thing goes so much deeper than I could have imagined. it was pretty obvious that he chose to become severed to try to use his innie self to communicate with and learn more about the severed floor and he's been doing all those paintings in the hopes his memory of the testing floor will bleed through to his innie, but this episode implies he's part of a much bigger conspiracy than just that.
irving is not some lone vigilante as I expected him to be. he's working with at least one other person to try to communicate with innies and spread knowledge of the goings on at lumon using his place as a plant on the severance floor. perhaps even the same people that helped petey become reintegrated.
he knows he's being watched and makes anonymous calls a ways from his home. he immediately had a cover story when milchick turned up like he was expecting to be questioned. he doesn't want to reveal that his innie woke up on the outside and is trying to figure out exactly how much lumon knows, and refuses to reveal his own hand before this. he tells milchick to tell him what all this is about so he can get a better grasp on how much he needs to lie about. he IMMEDIATELY distrusts milchick's motivations.
he has no idea what just happened and why, only that there's a chance all the work he's been doing on the outside has finally started paying off and he can't risk undoing all that progress by accidentally admitting to something. for all he knows his innie put this all in motion himself. he doesn't know it's part of a completely unrelated plan with his coworkers to break out. so he lies and pretends nothing happened because admitting his innie broke out might also fuck up the rest of whatever he's planning/working on. he's protecting both of his selves from a company he very clearly now is working to undermine.
he made sure to get home quickly after waking up at burt's (i still need to know how that played out, thanks!) so it looked as if he'd been there the whole time. the gears are immediately turning wrt his innie going to burt. he's trying to figure out how that guy fits into all this. maybe he's even going to approach burt thinking he's a co-conspirator on the outside and try to enlist him. I wonder how he will react when he finds out that's not the case at all and their connection is much more individual and personal than that. when he finds out his innie almost sacrificed all the work he's been doing the past three years because he fell in love and got his heart broken by this guy. I wonder if he'll ever find out.
AND WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH BURT FOLLOWING IRV AROUND. WHAT KIND OF SOULMATE MAGNETIC FORCES RED STRING OF FATE SHIT ARE THESE TWO ON!!!!!

the restaurant scene my god. that brief moment when mark shared a real laugh and a close moment with helena despite just meeting her and then recoiled in confusion and shook his head. his manner and the look in his eyes by the end of that interaction when he shoved down the inexplicable, split-second slip into easy companionship and looked at her like the destructive, dangerous stranger she is to him. the stark difference between omark and imark in that scene; down at lumon, mark was the naif, the child, the fumbling one; outside the severed floor, helena took that role. next to a regular adult she looks like the sheltered woman she is, deprived of all the usual experiences that shape a person; in so many ways, she herself is as much of an innie as helly is, but unlike helly who can evolve, helena will always be waking up on that table, over and over, no matter how much she tries to convince herself having memories makes her immune to an amorphous existence.

“Careful now.” Mr. Milchick cautioned, his left palm just beneath yours as he’d stopped you from nearly dropping the small, neatly wrapped box. He guided your left hand back to a level height, around ninety degrees at angle from elbow to hand. “We wouldn’t want to break that.” His right hand was set atop yours on the top side of the gift box.
“Oh, thank you, Mr. Milchick,” you sighed in relief. “My apologies, my outie overexerted himself this past weekend.”
“Yeah, that’s called sex,” Dylan snarked, pointing to the hard to cover hickeys trailing to the back of your ear. You weren’t exactly eager to promote or detail your outie’s sex-life.
“It’s his outie’s wedding anniversary,” Mark rectified Dylan’s crass statement.
“I’m aware,” Mr. Milchick responded, “Five years, seven months, and twelve weeks.” His left hand softly traced your wedding ring. If you didn't know any better, you'd say his smile took a softer tone; the usual dead joy in his eyes looked almost enamored. “My congratulations to your outie. I imagine the annual exhaustion indicative of a successful and joyous marriage."
Dylan's yearly crude joke on the matter was cut short as Irving placed a hand on his mouth. "I believe so too," you beamed, "alongside the presents, of course." You nodded to the gift in your hands. "Thank you for hand-delivering this year's gift, and last year's, and the year before that. You really don't have to; I'm sure there are better things to do." You glanced down at the gift; his hands had yet to leave yours.
"Nonsense," he assured you, "It's no trouble at all." Mr. Milchick squeezed your hands and, with one final smile, left the space. Irving made a disgusted sound as Dylan licked his palm and darted into the supply closet for a tissue.
Dylan pursed his lips, glancing over at the door; once certain Mr. Milchick wasn't returning soon, he teased, “Get a room next time, will you?”
You rolled your eyes. "It's hardly sexual to talk to a coworker."
"It is when you and Milchick do it," Dylan pulled a face in good jest. "Tell him, Mark!" He attempted to corral Mark to his side, "The eyefucking is abysmally disgusting." He dramatically exclaimed.
"I mean," Mark pursed his lips momentarily, "I don't really see anything of the sort," his words caused disbelief to rise on Dylan's face. "Besides, isn't Milchick married?"
Both Dylan and you turn to each other, then Mark, before shrugging, uncertain as to the answer. "How can you be sure?" Dylan asked.
His question was met with no answer as Irving returned and sternly expressed Mr. Milchick's preference for privacy: "What extracurricular activities Mr. Milchick has have no bearing here; he hardly enjoys sharing facts about himself outside of work, we should respect that." Dylan pouted and directed a not-so-quiet 'party pooper' at Irving; the latter turned to you and smiled earnestly, "Besides, aren't you more excited to find what anniversary present our friend has this year?"
Dylan half-shrugged, and he and Mark turned their attention to the gift box as you tore away the purple wrapping. This year's gift was an appropriately and mildly decorated set of custom sticky notes. "Your outie's husband is quite thoughtful," Irving commented, glancing at the stickers. “He's a lucky man."

i like how half the reactions i'm seeing in the recent posts tag are "innie mark i'm gonna kill you" and half are "outie mark i'm gonna kill you." the interesting nuanced relationships show does it again!!!

that's the thing though isn't it? outie mark never fully respected his innie as an individual, throughout this entire season he was making decisions for him, without his input, without even wondering if he wanted any of this. he doesn't even wonder if innie mark has seen any of those memories of gemma, reghabi had to remind him that it goes both ways. while saving gemma was obviously the right thing to do and innie mark could realize that, he'd also be giving his life for a cause that doesn't benefit anyone but the person who imprisoned him to begin with. this is all he has, all he'll ever have, everything outside was never meant to be his in the first place. this was the inevitable outcome, innie mark making his own decision, taking the power his outie had over his existence and using it against him. and you can't even blame him, really, of course these are his values, of course he'd do anything for the person, the people he loves. his outie tried to do it too.

thinking about how outie mark has very real cause now to believe that when milchick told him his innie found love he was talking about his gemma. probably its part of the reason he believes that she's alive even. at least subconsciously he has connected the dots this way because if innie mark is thriving and in love who else could it be other than the person outie mark is so depressed and broken without? im going to go insane i think

idk and i say this as a white person but hearing that the company you work for is torturing a woman in the basement and you can stop it and then saying but i want to keep working there for my own personal reasons is sooooo white like i really don’t think innie mark not caring about gemma even when she’s crying and screaming in front of him is a win for self actualization and i think the show framing it as rescuing this tortured woman is for outie mark like why should innie mark care?? is bad. like uh he should care.

My hot take is that Gemma deserves someone better while Mark Scout 100% deserves Helena Eagan.

random insomnia thought
Dylan's letter to Dylan G. might have been a lot more "FU, INNIE" if Gretchen were in a torture basement and her rescue and reunion were hinging upon his innie following thru
(also just having a side thought right now that it was easier for the dylans to have a lovely connection because they were already in sync; they both love gretchen--which i think is likely demonstrative of the larger ways in which his psych is in tune with itself. whereas the marks are in inherent conflict, out of sync, there could only be conflict. at first at least)
(is that why goats are a big deal? cause sides of yourself will inevitably butt heads?)

Ms. Casey doesn't act like Gemma.
Is it really any surprise that Mark S never developed a love interest in her? This sounds harsh, but I doubt Mark Scout would, had she been his only impression.
Honestly, I'd like to know how Ms. Casey out of all of Gemma's innies arguably feels the least like she stems from the same person. I have to assume it's related to the training she went through as a wellness counselor, but it's strange how Ms. Casey's mannerisms and speech come across as uncanny- regardless of if she's following a script.
