The New Jersey Devils are 7-4-2 with sixteen points, first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Out of a total of twenty six points, we came out of the month with sixteen points, which isn't bad at all, but maybe isn't the exact start we were looking to have.

Roster Information: Curtis Lazar is "out indefinitely" and Santeri Hatakka is on the injured reserve.

T's Thoughts, in no particular order:

Global Series was a helluva of a start to the season.

Seamus Casey, we can't wait for you to be a permanent fixture on our roster.

Siegs is motherfucking back. Put some respect on his name.

Nico Hischier is going for the Selke, the Hart, and the Rocket Richard.

Paul Cotter is an instant fan favorite.

The loss of Curtis Lazar is absolutely devastating, wishing him a speedy recovery, but take all the time you need in the world, king.

The Brett Pesce - Luke Hughes defensive pair is shaping up to be absolutely amazing. I'm so excited to see what they can do when they're playing the minutes we want them to play.

I am all about Chief Keefe. The decisions he makes on when to send out who, the way he deals with media, the way he talks to and about the players, the way he handles ref fuckery. I'm all on board the Chief Keefe Train.

Never take Timo Meier off of Nico Hischier's wing. A healthy Timo is going to take this league by storm.

Noesy on the first power play unit is a revelation.

Speaking of, our special teams are fucking killing it this first month. The power play is steadily getting better and closer and closer to elite status and our penalty kill is sexy as fuck.

Jack Hughes will always be Jack Hughes. The doubters are simply wrong.

Jesper Bratt remains Mister October.

I am concerned with a capital C about our goaltending. It seems to be costing us games when it should absolutely not be. I'm hoping for better goalie stats as the season moves along, but our goaltending is one of my biggest complaints.

Ondrej Palat, please, I want to root for you. Give me a reason to root for you.

Dougie Hamilton has been so sorely missed. I want to see more Dougie Bombs, please.

Our new guys have been fucking lights out amazing for us, especially Cotts and Kovy.

I love how Kovy is always willing to step up and defend his fellow teammate no matter what.

I go from being real high on Brenden Dillon to being like whatever on Brenden Dillon to being like curses! Brenden Dillon, so lets see how I feel as the season continues.

Keep Dawson Mercer on Nico Hischier's wing. The mini me is mini me-ing.

We gotta find consistency and we gotta find sixty minute efforts or as close to a sixty minute effort as possible.

We also gotta fix our defensive zone play over all. We don't exit the zone cleanly most of the time and our breakouts are real sloppy.

The vibes are fucking immaculate tho. It feels good, looks good, feels right, looks right.

Two shutouts already! Two loser points already! Two slutfests already!

Seeing some insane efforts by this team to claw back into games they have no business getting any points out of.

The less I see Kurtis MacDermid in the line up the better.

I am getting heavily concerned about whats happening with Nemo. If he's not going to get a real shot at a roster spot then he absolutely cannot be languishing in a press box. The kid deserves to play and he should be sent down to Utica.

Keeping a close eye on our fourth line. We have a top nine that I love, but we need to solidify that fourth line. Dowling's first outing with Tatar and Nate proved to be a great one for everyone involved, but let's see how they perform moving forward, seeing as BFF Curtis is out long term.

We absolutely need another top six winger as that is our missing piece, and I'm hoping my emotional support prospect, Arseni Gritsyuk will be the answer, but I don't know if we can wait that long.

Our lack of center depth and forward depth as a whole is also something that has caught my eye. Yeah, we have a long line of potential blue line replacements in case the worse happens, but it looks like our forward reserves are lacking.

I think we should have expected a bumpy start to begin with. A short pre-season, injuries on our blue line, new coach, new players, new system. It was going to take some time. Plus our schedule in October was fucking brutal. We had like what three practices the entire month? Given all of that, we're looking better as time goes on and we've seen some really strong games in a row starting from the Detroit game through the game against Vancouver last night.

900th Adventure notes (not much about Ian and Evan!)

-Nigel Kitching, from Sonic the Comic, interestingly returns. His writing is more dramatic at first, but it was all a ploy to distract Metal and ease off the effects of the Topaz

His mannerisms are a little snappier, which given StC makes sense, same for brief descriptions cuz he British. Sadly Knuckles didn't do anything, but I like Sonic's characterization. He's cheeky, but not obnoxiously dissing like Flynn's, and his ploy exposes a good context intelligence unlike most of IDW

The art's weird. Apparently both Fonseca and Rik Mack worked on it, and while I see Fonseca's influence, it deviates from his still at bits. Not bad, though Knux's anger seemsmore exaggerated than what the writer intended

-Daniel Barnes has Sonic a bit more mouthy to Eggman/bots specifically. I like the idea that Eggman's testing out mechas in remote locations. If they fail, he won't be penalized. His mecha also is actually new, about time! Oddly, the city seems to be based on OVA...

Sonic noticeably isn't too bothered by the bots, and his priority of the Topaz over Eggman is seen. Only fault I can think of is fans misreading this as him not taking Eggman seriously out of context (note this further shows that Sonic can deal with Eggman not existing unlike Boom)

Art by Min Ho Kim (Dee Gee Min) once again is very detailed both drawing and rendering. .

-Aaron Hammerstrom. So the first thing I noticed, Cream!

She's been weirdly absent before this for Blaze use, you know, Blaze's first friend. That said, don't like the >told me I shouldn't help cuz dangerous. Feels counter to both games and that Annual, but this is IDW so bleh

Despite Rush refs, noticed Zero Gravity here. Also the first Aaron draw Sonic from the front

Also not a fond of the "Blaze be solo" retread. Brief, but still bleh

Shame, I love Aaron's art, especially with Foundraine coloring. Sonic's characterization is also better than Ian's, so double shame Cream got the short end of things initially, and Blaze too

first, yikes. No offense to Abby Bulmer, but her art...isn't too good for chars and color. First I've seen their name though, for a 900th adventure issue special that's...odd. Wonder if this was done last minute...

That said, BG and perspectives are nice, and action/flow is good

As for writing, I like how Caleb references this even art BG wise (issue 15)

The scuffle with the Rogues is more comedic (also hey, Storm actually has a say here unlike Summer special), though I like this note

Of Rouge actually wanting to save the world, with treasure being secondary. Too often fans and Ian flanderize the treasure love

Shadow also is mostly decent, though I hated this. This is obnoxiously egotistic

In tune with Rivals though otherwise; He doesn't hate Sonic, but will not be afraid to beat him for the greater good

He also accepts Sonic making an option 3 (very much Sonic to say fuck da limits), and beats the Rogues from attempting to chase after they insult him. A little juvenile at bits, but "muh mandates" are further proven to be horseshit

So the end is Ian, and I won't talk much cuz it's basically Sonic putting the Topaz in its original spot, but this

The plot was, um, interesting ig. Idk it was kind of lacking but that could just be me.

Overall rating is a ★★★. I would have given it two stars but it had enough redeeming qualities that that felt too harsh. To be honest I didn't enjoy the movie. The ending was unsatisfactory and I didn't even really want them together at that point. It becomes pretty hard to root for Richard about an hour in as he devolves into madness. Ik they sort of covered that but I didn't care enough about his character for it to be interesting. That being said it was very funny and the acting is good at least to my untrained eye. The soundtrack was pretty decent too. And of course the best part is that you get to stare at David Tennant for almost two hours.

Edit: No actually you know what after thinking about it for a day this was a fucking terrible movie. I think my detachment and utter lack of investment in the plot and characters blinded me to how awful it was. Richard and Barbara's relationship is supposed to be the main plot point except it's so dull that I didn't care about it at all. I couldn't even care enough to root against it. Richard is an asshole that you don't want to succeed but Barbara isn't likable enough either. AND THEN, when you think that maybe he might be facing some minor consequences for his repeatedly terrible behaviour SHE GOES BACK TO HIM. Who's wish fulfillment self insert is this. The only redeeming qualities are that it is consistently very funny and Moss is a king.

“I can’t fucking believe he chose soccer.” Rick sulks in the driver seat as you look back to your 7 year old, game ready in his uniform and oblivious to his father’s irritation about the chosen sport. “I mean I was playing football at his age!”

“Now, now Richard, your father made you play football and you resented it. Didn’t you?”

Rick huffs but hangs his head in shame because you’re right, his father made him do many things, most of which he regrets doing. But still, “why soccer out of the rest? Why not baseball?”

You tug your teeth between your lips as you stifle a giggle at your husband’s antics because what the former Special Ops officer doesn’t know is that you managed to subconsciously point your son into the direction of soccer, whether that being by telling stories of soccer players like Messi or Ronaldo, or even sitting your son on your lap while you watched the world cup. Either way, Rick is none the wiser to your scheme. 

The closer the three of you get to the soccer field, the more you could feel the excitement bouncing off your seven year old, iPad and headphones long forgotten as he stares out the window with wide hazel eyes. “I hope we win!” You and Rick share a glance with each other before you look back at your son, a smile on your face. 

“I’m sure you will honey. I’m sure you will.”

“We’re here.”

Now Rick would never say it outloud, but he had always fantasized about getting up on Saturday mornings, getting his kids dressed for their games and spending the better part of a day outside in the fall weather. But the real deal far surpasses all his fantasies. 

“COME ON REF, THAT WAS A FOUL!” Rick jumps up from his lawn chair and screams at the top of his lungs, gathering the attention of everybody on and off the field.

“Rick, sit your ass down!” You yank his arm down as he scoffs and crosses his arms before looking at you.

“That was obviously offside!” You roll your eyes in amusement but bring his knuckles to your lips and press a gentle kiss to them causing him to blush underneath the brim of his baseball cap. 

“Rickie, they’re only 7 years old. Fouls aren’t really a thing. Besides, that’s not what offside means.”

“Well they should be.” You lightly punch his arm and turn your focus back to the game just in time for the opposing team to put the ball in the net. “Oh come on, that’s bullshit!” 

“Watch your language mister, there’s children present!” Some lady comments as the ref jogs over to you and Rick, causing you to sink further into the chair.

“Listen, sir, you need to watch your voice and calm down. This is a warning.” Rick nods his head and takes a seat back down as the game continues. 

“This is such bullshit, that team should’ve never gotten a goal.”

“Babe, it’s just a junior league game. It’s okay.”

“Sure it’s just a ‘junior league game’ but I want our son to win. I know I didn’t raise a loser.” You roll your eyes in response to his demeanor.

“Our kid would never be a loser. Winning/losing doesn’t matter, what matters is if he has fun.”

“I suppose you’re right.” Rick pouts, hazel eyes training on the field as he spots a mop of blonde hair supporting a blue jersey running with a ball between their feet. “Holy shit, look it’s our kid!”

You surge forward out of your seat and clutch onto Rick’s hand because yes, it is your son running toward the goal with the ball at his feet. “Go! Go! Go baby!”

“Come on, come on,” Rick utters underneath his breath before the ball goes into the net. “GOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL! THAT’S MY BOY!” Rick shoots up out of his chair as the rest of the team’s parents cheer in unison but your son tunes the rest out, only focused on his mom and dad cheering him on from the side lines.

“I can’t believe we won!” You son comments from the top of Rick’s broad shoulders, swinging his short legs as he holds onto his father via Rick’s ash blonde locks. 

“You did really well, kiddo. Knew you’d win.” 

“We’re very proud of you, honey. You did so well!” 

“I overheard some other parents say that daddy was being mean. Is that true?”

“Daddy just got a little excited,” Rick comments with a smirk as you roll your eyes. Never did you think Rick would be more into the game than you are but he still proves you wrong on the daily. “Because you won, how about you, mommy and I go get some ice cream? How does that sound?”

“Yayyy ice cream!”

ISWM Secret Website Hidden Messages

okay so the title might be a little misleading because they’re not exactly hidden, per se, especially if you know to look at it. but. i just wanted to point out something fun.

as we all know, most links on the Case Directory page lead to a 404 Error Page (except for “Invincible Syndicate, The”, which leads to the page for Invincible 2, and “Man, Drowned”, which leads to chapter 1 of The Drowned Man documentary mark made on his channel, specifically jumping to a timestamp where mark says, “Despite all the weirdness, this seems fairly normal.”) however, each link still has a web address, which are still unique to each link despite seemingly leading to the same page. very clever!

(sidenote, this page confirms that the codes i solved are all Correct. hah!!! tho, the “g” on the list is in lowercase. i wonder if that was a typo or if it’s on purpose.)

for most of the links, the web address just follows the format of “www.universalstabilityagency.space/[insert link name here]”, which is fairly standard. let’s call this the normal web address. for example, the web address for the link labeled:

Heeeeeyyy, I love me a good fucking STUDY

for environments:

shot deck is a massive database of film shots searchable by grading, tod, shot type, characters and content! Studying from films really helps improve your values and composition as the shots are usually very carefully constructed! It helps you find ways to maintain realism while still packing mood and narrative into your work!

master paintings! I recommend the orientalists like Jean Leon Gerome in particular their environments had great compositions and throw around a ton of colour and light! I like the modern artists Craig Mullins and Richard Schmid also, as there is so much impressionist lost detail and simplicity yet the environments feel so real.

The 1960s era disney background artists like eyvind earle are a masterclass in stylisation and simplification and make a wonderful choice for studies. (That being said modern disney visdev artists like Nathan Fowkes are just as fantastic to study for the same reason)

architectural photography can be a great resource too- I love to look for work by urbEX people!

thumbnailing and comp studies- trying to break down a photo into as few values as possible and still have it be readable- this really helps train your brain in the relationship between light exposure and local value.

Im begging you if doing it in colour is too hard to start with just do it in black and white!!!!! Greyscale painting is an essential step in learning to paint and understand lighting scenarios!! Colour is hard!!!

there is no substitute for going outside and doing some plein air painting- really looking first hand at how the light effects different materials and objects, how it bounces around, what edges your eye naturally loses in certain lighting scenarios. Just go outside and draw and try to notice stuff.

for characters:

figure studies!!!! from life if you can but if you cant there are a ton of great resources out there- personally I love croquis cafe and posespace, but if you can afford it (and are interested in intense anatomy study) then scott eaton has a site called bodies in motion which is fantaaaastic. I think by now everyone knows nyx and senshistock, I also use a lot of grafit studio photorefs to study more complicated poses!!

Master studies (again). I particularly like to study the work of John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, Edwin Austin Abbey, Alphonse Mucha (his le pater compositions are out of this world), any of the New Rochelle artists (e.g rockwell, tom lovell, those 1950s illustrators REALLY knew their shit).

I literally have a resin skull on my desk that I've used to do quick studies with different lighting, just 10 mins a day back when I was doing it and it levelled up my skill a lot!.

Material studies are essential to leveling up your character painting!!! Look at fur, look at metal, look at the way something embroidered reflects light vs tooled leather!!

gesture studies! Look at a dynamic pose and see how you can exaggerate the motion in away that captures the sense of movement. This is tricky to start with but its really worthwhile especially when you combine it with other exercises. Mixamo is a cool library to look into for this kind of thing as you can pause and rotate the models in the middle of their actions!

breakdown the work of artists you admire- it's ok to study other living artists (and try to reverse engineer how they are making their decisions) it's a very effective learning tool! Really figure out what it is about that persons workflow you like, and how you might incorporate that element into your own. Obviously, dont post studies of living artists work!

The most important thing is that when you do a study you go into it knowing what you want to learn. Dont try to do everything at once! It's ok to focus on the muscle structure and not give a damn about the gesture. It's ok to focus on the texture of the fur and completely ignore the characters face.

The best way to keep doing studies is to find refs you like- things you are interested in and that capture your imagination! Follow your curiosity and remember that just a tiny little bit a day makes a huge difference.

Gunna take a sec to recommend the tutorials of Devin Korwin. He talks about how to study and how to breakdown art fundamentals in a way that is at once both very advanced but also digestible. I highly recommend his pdfs!

Weekly Update 28/02/2022

Good evening!

It's the end of February, coming into March, and I'm so excited for what I want to work on the next little while. Happy St David's Day for the 1st of March, if you celebrate, Cymru am byth!

The past week I've been playing Samurai Warriors 4, and to my delight it's even more homoerotic than Samurai Warriors 2 which I grew up with, with a lot more complexity to the characters and a lot of new characters and character angles too, so I'm really enjoying it. If you like that sort of hack-and-slash game, I definitely do recommend it, and I shall almost certainly be playing SW5 at some point.

I'm currently watching Halston, which is on Netflix and is a miniseries about the gay fashion designer, played by Ewan McGregor, which I definitely recommend if you want something a bit mindless to put on - it's trashy and it's fun, and while it's not very deep and doesn't do anything interesting with any of its characters, I've really been enjoying having it on in the background. Some other gems I've enjoyed this week are:

SHUDŌ (2015, dir. To-Anh Bach, Charles Badiller, and Hugo Weiss) - This is a short film, it's literally only a couple of minutes long, and it's about two samurai, once lovers, fighting to the death. Such a lot of emotion and heart packed into such a tiny little piece, and I can't recommend it enough.

The Wretched (2019, dir. Brett Pierce & Drew T. Pierce) - This is a teen horror flick that does some fun stuff with the conventions of monstrous witches, mind control, and some interesting character stuff. I really enjoyed the twist, and I really liked how real a lot of the characters feel - the protagonist in particular is flawed in ways I appreciated, and I liked that a lot.

They Live In The Grey (2022, dir. Abel Vang & Burlee Vang) - This is a new Shudder release, and I really liked it. It's quite slow-paced, so definitely put some time aside to really watch and digest it if you give it a go, but it did so much interesting work with trauma and the isolation of not being able to voice or verbalise that trauma, especially because you feel insecure about communicating it or don't know how to word it. I love what it does with ghosts and haunting, and all the dialogue and character interaction feels so real, to the point of being really quite painful.

The Silenced (2011, dir. Hwang Dong-hyuk) - This one is fucking heavy, but it's a drama based on real life, starring Gong Yoo as a teacher who comes to a school for Deaf children and uncovers several cases of CSA. It's primarily about the court case and the ways in which the process is unjust and corrupt, on top of being in various ways retraumatising for the victims - it's so well done, and Gong Yoo really does just. Nail the role, as is his wont.

Some other stuff from this week that I enjoyed were The Ice King, Nobody Knows I'm Here, District 9, Splinter, and The Hole.

okay, so the thing about hockey is that, while injuries are Very Common, most of the time the skater will be able to make it off the ice on their own or with the help of a few teammates. (a forward named Richard Zednik once took a skate to the neck and literally proceeded to skate off the ice to get help, leaving a trail of blood in his wake. hockey players are metal As Fuck).

that said, it’s pretty rare for a stretcher to be brought in, especially in the NCAA; on the Aces, only one player has injured an opponent enough to necessitate one, and that player is Roman

before that, though, here are some Milder Injuries that the team has inflicted:

side note: roman, remus, and D have all fought in their high school and/or college careers, meaning that they’ve broken noses and (in the twins’ case) an occasional jaw or two. roman’s beatdown on the Princeton player was probably the most brutal – i’ll outline the details in another ask – but all three have inflicted some damage

virgil inflicts quite a bit of damage when he gets into it with another player near the end of his second season, but that’s a story for later

remus, as someone who has admittedly played dirty in the past, has been responsible for a number of concussions and separated shoulders from various boarding calls and ill-placed checks. none of his targets have ever lost consciousness, but he has administered a couple hits that others were slow to get up from. 

roman has broken a number of hands and ankles with his slapshot, because when a committed defenseman tries to stop a puck sailing forward at 90-something miles an hour, that’s just a thing that occasionally happens. he has also administered hits that others were slow to get up from, but they were all clean. (he’s just. a big, big boy.) additionally, he once took out a goalie when they took a slapshot directly to the mask. they were able to get off the ice with the help of their teammates, but they didn’t return for the rest of the game. (this is part of the reason he reacted so quickly when he hit logan’s mask during their reconciliation.)

D has caused a few separated shoulders and blown knee ligaments when his hipcheck has gone wrong.

patton once caught another player in the ankle with his skate; he didn’t realize it at the time because there was no stoppage in play, but he learned later that the player left the ice with a severed achilles tendon. he drowned in guilt for two weeks before he was able to track the player down and apologize in person 

then, there was the Injury

to be fair, it was an accident. it’s important that you know this. the Aces were at an away game, roman went in for the check, and it wasn’t even a particularly hard one, but the opponent’s skates went out from under him.

they both went careening into the corner boards, which. it was painful, but that’s just how it goes sometimes. roman popped back up, intent on continuing the play, stiff shoulder be damned, but as he was crossing the blue line, the sharp trill of the whistle brought everything to a halt. 

and roman didn’t know what was going on – not yet – but suddenly another opposing player was rushing him, gloves off and face set in a snarl. 

roman didn’t respond to the offer to fight because he didn’t have time to respond to it. one moment, Michigan Tech #18′s hands were fisted in his jersey, and the next, the ref was prying them apart, forcing his way between the two players and yelling something unintelligible through the roar of the crowd

roman glanced around the ice, searching for any clues about what could have happened. he wasn’t offsides. it wasn’t an icing. he was in line to be captain the next year, but at the time, he wasn’t a player worth attacking like this. he had no idea what was going on. 

but then, he spotted him. Michigan Tech #27, still laying against the corner boards, curled up where roman left him. his teammates were fanned around him, crouched by his side as he cried out in pain but made no further effort to lift himself from the ice.

something cold and dense set in roman’s ribcage, because he – he didn’t do that, did he? it wasn’t that hard of a hit. the Michigan player couldn’t really be injured. he couldn’t. (but it couldn’t be a dive, either. there was no way a dive would go on for this long.)

Michigan Tech #18 fought against the ref, still yelling at roman, screaming his abuse. roman, for what it was worth, heard none of it. he was too busy staring at #27, the cold feeling in his ribcage spreading through his chest and down into his stomach, steadily turning into a sharp ache.

“i’m sorry,” he said numbly, because he was. he didn’t mean for any of it to happen. “i didn’t – i’m sorry.”

there was a solid weight on his shoulder then – his captain’s hand, gently pulling him back away from the ref.

“it’s okay,” joseph said, voice soft. for roman’s ears only. “it’s okay, roman. you didn’t do anything wrong. go wait by the bench. i’ll take care of this.”

roman wanted to argue, but he found himself complying instead, arms-legs-chest heavy. he skated to the bench, leaned back against the boards. his gaze flitted from joseph, talking to the ref, to #27, still unmoving on the ice. his own teammates hovered around him, offered him the occasional pat on the back, consolation that he neither needed nor deserved.

coach thomas came to check on him at one point. placed a hand on his shoulder just like joseph had, echoed a similar sentiment.

“these things happen sometimes.” coach thomas said. his smile was tight, but not unkind. “believe me. i’d know.”

roman hesitated. nodded. thomas would know, wouldn’t he? his injury ended his career, after all. but even so…

“what do i do?” roman asked. and coach thomas dropped a shoulder in a shrug. 

“you apologize,” coach thomas said. “you wish him a quick recovery.” 

“…then, you move forward.”

the stretcher came 5 minutes later. roman skated beside it, offered an apology that #27 didn’t accept but didn’t reject either, which was fair. he was hurting, that much was obvious.

the game resumes. #18 crosschecks roman, and he doesn’t bother to retaliate. joseph offers, but roman turns him down. he gets it. it’s fine. 

they win in overtime. it feels unjust in a way, but roman doesn’t begrudge his team the victory. 

roman scores the winning goal. goes to the next game and plays the same as always. moves on.

(later, roman would learn that it was a cracked sternum. the guy just happened to go into the boards wrong. could’ve happened to anyone.)

(even so, roman makes an effort to apologize again when the teams meet again early on the next season)
