Weekly summary!
Hello everyone! I hope you had a wonderful week :)
This week has been quite busy for me, but despite that, managed to make some small progress, so it wasn't all negative. These days, I've been focusing again on the voice search for the demo - I'm excited to confirm that we've finally found the voice for the 401 character!
Clapping in the background *
This is news that fills me with excitement, as I move forward step by step and these significant achievements fill me with joy. All the effort I have invested so far has definitely paid off. I also want to confirm that the voice will be in Spanish. I wanted to find something authentic to include in the demo, and although the selection was a challenging process because so many people wanted to participate, I am immensely grateful to everyone who wanted to be part of this.
Everyone get a warm hug from me!
I don't have a really relevant image to share, but I show you this picture of the picture I printed of the last illustration (which I personally loved, hehe).

So, just going to try and track/summarize what's going on with me each week so I can find patterns. One pattern I'm pretty sure will emerge is move less=gain weight; move more=lose weight. Walking really seems to help me A LOT on that front, even just walking 2 miles a day helped my weight go down. Unfortunately, every three weeks I get another treatment on this f-ing plantar wart on my big toe and I can't walk or even put on a shoe, for a few days. This time, he added the fun of freezing AND acid, which was extra special! It's been a week and it still hurts, though I did manage to get a shoe on on Saturday, long walks are painful.
My goals right now are simple:
get in 10k steps every day that I can realistically do so without hurting myself/get a shoe on without lots of pain. I'd been getting that done up until Tuesday when I got this treatment.
Continue to eat low carb. I should be tracking more, I run hot and cold with it, but should probably track more consistently.
I feel like the walking, which is mainly a ZONE 2 heart rate activity, is a key to getting the scale to move down. This toe is just making it hard to stay consistent.

This week's fails:
Failed a quiz
Can't figure out how to get my surface to stop ignoring pen input for like 10 minutes after my hands touch the screen in any form
Spent too much money
This week's wins:
Got one of the highest scores on a test
Finished 2 books; a 300+ page poetry book and then the book in the first photo, bringing me to 3 books so far this year
Took a night off from everything to go to my cousin's birthday and indulged in good food and wine

Week 1: Summary
I think since I have two translation classes I want to do these little summary posts to keep track of my progress.
Latin:
This week in Latin we started the Aeneid Book 4. We got lines 1-42ish translated in class, and I have through line 49 prepared.
Homeric Greek:
This week in Greek, we started the Iliad. We are starting from book 1 (after I complained about not translating my favorite section)! We got lines 1-30 translated in class, and I have through line 75 prepared.
All in all, not a bad week!

I feel like I learned a lot about storytelling + "marketing" a story from Webtoon (the Webtoon from a few years ago when it was still decent). The way it worked was that 1) story blurb to draw in people 2) three initial episodes to get people invested 3) one episode per week. It showed the strength of a strong summary with a genre but without trope tags (unlike fanfiction) or describing your work as abc meets xyz (which seems to be what YA publishing does nowadays?). The three initial episodes introduces tone, artstyle, main characters, main plot, basic worldbuilding, and is supposed to quickly "hook" the reader. I like the format of three initial episodes (instead of one) because the first episode is usually different (given its main purpose is to grab the attention of new people), the other two gives you a taste of what a "standard weekly update" might contain.
I feel a lot of Webtoons start with a strong premise/ gimmick/ hook but they don't know what to do with it. And that's totally normal because some premises are better when shrouded in mystery and you have to do the hard work of explaining the mystery. I've read Webtoons that start with one premise, then it gets sidelined in the middle as new themes develop, and in the end you realise the "premise" was a marketing tactic to draw people in and the story is about something else entirely, but you stayed because it was still a good story, and you have no complaints. (Eg. I think people step into I Love Yoo thinking it's a romance, and the first bits do seem like a set up for romance, but it turns out the genre is drama and the romance is a slooooooow burn.) I've read Webtoons that start with one interesting premise, then it fizzles away and turns into a rather standard story for its genre to the point the hook is barely relevant when it was what made it stand out. And on the rare occasion you will find a Webtoon that has its premise, develops the plot from there, sticks with its themes, and the ending is thematically resonant. (I think Cursed Princess Club does a good job at this.) But it's difficult to craft a very consistent and coherent story (especially given the serial format), so it's fine to just kinda sideline or even ditch your premise so long the actual main plot is solid. Your premise is what initially got people reading, but they'll get invested in other things. Maybe you even have to manually create a hook and get into the meat later once your readers are properly invested. But I feel most of the time it's otherwise because you can get a really cool idea but NO CLUE on how to end it and it sucks because either you drag on or give it an unsatisfactory ending. The good thing is that you get a "buffer zone" in which readers are still interested in reading due to the premise/hook and you get the time to properly work things out.
So I don't think a premise has to be completely executed and explained in order for a story to be compelling. If it does its job of bringing in new folks and convincing them to stay long enough to get invested in style/tone/plot/characters/relationships/whatever, sometimes it's easier to let the premise go. Sometimes you want a tonal shift. But at the same time, a premise is so useful for marketing purposes. You can talk about what tropes it has and what media it's influenced by, but what is the story actually about?

I meant to do this every week, but I think I missed a couple. Anyway, plantar wart was treated with freezing AND acid last time and it really HURT and didn't feel better for a few days, but this week it was better and I was able to get back to walking.
Walking consistently really does seem to be the key (at least for now) for me to lose weight (in addition to PlyoJam and weight training). The scale moves fairly consistently, if slowly, downward if I walk daily, at least 2 miles. The last couple of days, I've done 3 miles (well, 3.1 or a bit more, so a 5k), and it's taken me about an hour. The hour includes stopping to take pictures because I'm walking on the beach at sunset, and it's impossible not to do that. Here are some pictures from my recent walks...

I may start posting my walk/Workout stats as I do them. I'm feeling more motivated with the scale progress, even though I know I shouldn't depend on it for motivation. I do. it's just the facts right now after struggling on a plateau so long.

Chapters: 18/23 Fandom: A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones (TV) Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Jaime Lannister/Brienne of Tarth Characters: Brienne of Tarth, Jaime Lannister, Tyrion Lannister, Cersei Lannister, Tywin Lannister, Selwyn Tarth Additional Tags: Alternate Universe, Solarpunk, Alternate Universe - Space, Alternate Universe - Future, No Twincest, Mild Angst, Happy Ending, once again i am asking how did this happen, the science in this is sketchy at BEST, we're using arthur clarke's third law excessively here, Mutual Pining, yet again the angst has been reclassified to moderate, i should know better by now but here we are, Yearning, Space Opera, but mostly it's on earth, minor scenes of violence, scenes dealing heavily with the aftermath of serious violence, no sexual violence though
Chapter Summary:
“Happy Nameday!”
Two days later, Jaime and Cersei stood with matching, shocked expressions in the entrance to the dining area where they'd halted after the group had shouted at their arrival.
Cersei recovered first, demanding, “What's all of this?”
“It's your nameday, sister,” Tyrion said wryly. “Surely you're not so old you've forgotten the date.”

Robert Louis Stevenson: "Whelp. That's the end of it. The mystery is all cleared up, and I figure I don't need to continue with the story."
Us, having all known the answer from the start and only being invested in Utterson at this point: "Excuse Me What."
