I'm not one to usually care about an otp to the point of making an original child for them. But there is something about rizumo that makes my heart soar for it. So here's little Hikaru, and this won't be the last in seeing him. ;w;

Hi Days! I just watched the Kabuki documentary with Ikuta Toma the other day and it was really interesting! I was surprised (and happy) to see Shun Oguri there too! I'm curious though if you've watched/followed other shows of any other Japanese celebrity? I also just finished watching "First Love" with Takeru Sato and Hikari Mitsushima the other day, it was a lovely series ❤️
Hello born!!! The Kabuki documentary was really, really interesting, right???? Finding out about how he was just coasting through being a trainee and realizing one day that everyone (Arashi ahhhh) was debuting except for him, it's like 💔 But he really found his own path!!! And I was also surprised to see Oguri Shun there! Just, like a surprise treat for all the fans??? I had no idea that they were such close friends.
*big sighs* I don't have the time to invest in regularly watching dramas. I do really, really want to watch First Love! Mostly because I want to support Netflix in carrying more Japanese dramas. Also who doesn't love Utada Hikaru.
I'm not sure if you're asking about current or in the past, but when I was a teenager, I watched
Hana Yori Dango starring MatsuJun, Inoue Mao, and Oguri Shun
Nobuto wo Produce starring Kamenashi Kazuya, Horikita Maki, and Yamapi
Kurosagi (2006) starring Yamapi - they've remade this recently starring Hirano Sho (King & Prince)
Gokusen 1, 2, and 3 starring Nakama Yukie
Kisarazu Cat's Eye starring Okada Junichi (ok did you watch him in The Fable on Netflix because if not, you absolutely must!!!)
Dragon Zakura starring Abe Hiroshi
Hana Kimi starring Horikita Maki, Ikuta Toma, and Oguri Shun
1 Litre no Namida starring Nishikido Ryo and Sawajiri Erika
Liar Game 1 and 2 starring Matsuda Shota and Toda Erika
Densha Otoko starring Ito Atsushi and Ito Misaki
Koizora (film) starring Miura Haruma and Aragaki Yui
Tantei Gakuen Q (film & drama) starring Kamiki Ryunosuke, Shida Mirai, and Yamada Ryosuke
Seigi no Mikata starring Shida Mirai and Yamada Yu
My Boss My Hero starring Nagase Tomoya
Ryuusei no Kizuna starring Ninomiya Kazunari, Toda Erika, and Nishikido Ryo
Chekaraccho!! (Check It Out Yo!!) (film) starring Ichihara Hayato, Inoue Mao, and Hiraoka Yuta
Hero SP starring Kimura Takuya
I am certain that there's others that I don't have listed here, but basically I mostly watched dramas that starred Johnny's idols in the mid-2000s. I was a big Toda Erika, Aragaki Yui, and Shida Mirai fan. By 2008, I was moving onto Taiwanese and Korean fandoms, so like Takeru Satoh? I didn't watch anything with him in it even though he's a big name actor now, he was only just starting to get name recognition in 2008.
I have watched a few current films!! So actually I recently watched Mitsushima Hikari in Tang and Me starring Ninomiya Kazunari. She was so good. The plot of Tang was awful, but everyone's acting was SO HIGH TIER that the film was worth watching. I have high expectations for her in First Love. Also I watched The Fable film series on Netflix starring Okada Junichi, and yes. Yes. One of the best movies I've watched this year.
In terms of current dramas... I saw the first episode of Koi Nante, Honki De Yatte Dousuru No? (Who Needs True Love?) which stars Matsumura Hokuto and Hirose Alice. I really want to watch the rest of this because I think it will help me finish writing my fic "Genghis Khan." But. The Japanese is slightly too difficult for me to understand :( I heard from my friend that Hokuto's sex appeal is to-die-for in this drama. If I can't watch him in Koi Nante, I know that I'll at least get to hear him voice act in Shinkai's Suzume no Tojimari once it hits American theaters.
I also watched the first episode of Silent, which stars Meguro Ren and Kawaguchi Haruna. It comes highly recommended by my friends. It took a ton of brainpower for me to understand the first episode, though. My friends have way better Japanese comprehension than me. It really seems like Matsumura Hokuto and Meguro Ren are names to keep an eye on in Japanese entertainment these days.
My friends also really want me to watch Cherry Magic starring Akaso Eiji and Machida Keita. I feel like I've watched it already because I've seen so many clips of it here on Tumblr haha.
I'm sorry this was a huge response 😓 for a simple check-in. I guess I just summarized and relived several years of Japanese pop culture obsession in the past two hours of writing this out. Thoughts on anything I've written here? :D

There’s soo many moments in here I want to draw, my top pick is wanting to draw Yuriko popping up from the pumpkin she made. God this was so cute and so wholesome, and everything i NEEDED in life. You’ve made me so weak for family stuff Lou ;A;. I can’t wait for my ideas with the family this Nov and Dec, like truly I can’t. I want to draw to the point of wanting a calender of them in family moments D’X. I was also half expecting someone to comment in the story of them having 3 kids and now a 4th xD.
People in the town probably “She’s pregnant with a 4th kid!? I guess the parents have to keep warm somehow.” XD
Thank you for this gift you have bestowed upon me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It wasn’t everyday that the Okumura family went down the mountain. Their home at the top was safe and isolated. Their own little oasis, away from prying eyes. It kept them hidden from those who wished them harm, which according to their parents, were a lot of people. Many wanted them for their powers and abilities. Their lineage being of high interest to those outside of their little mountain top home.
But today was a special day. The autumn weather brought a chill to the air but the path down the mountain was still free of snow. This was their chance to head down to the town that sat at the base of the mountain. Their parents have taken turns about two or three times a month going into the town to shop for supplies. Usually food from the market and other miscellaneous items they may have needed. Sometimes they were allowed to join their parents, but those trips were always quick and kind of boring. Today’s trip was only meant for fun.
All three kids were packed in the back of the car while the parents sat up front. The father was driving while his pregnant wife helped navigate. The kids in the back chatted happily about what to expect from where they were going. All three of them have been on this annual trip before.
The oldest was stuck in the middle, in-between his sister and brother. He wore a bagging blue sweatshirt and pants. His dark hair was messy and falling in his face. He was also the tallest of the three, but only by a couple of inches.
To his right was his younger brother. He wore a plain tee with a long-sleeved, plaid button down shirt over top of it. His snowy white hair was kept neater than his brother’s, his bangs straight and hair cut short. The boy had one of his arms leaning against the car door and his fist propping up his head. He stared out the window, watching the trees fade away as they were replaced with farm land.
On the far left was the youngest and only girl. She monopolized the conversation, but no one seemed to mind. Her hands moved with her as she spoke enthusiastically about their trip. Her long, wavy black hair went all over the place and looked like it could swallow her up. Her oversized glasses kept sliding off her face because of how much she moved in her seat. She was the most dressed up between her siblings, wearing a black and white spiderweb skirt that sparkled in the sunlight and a gray shirt with a purple bat on the front.
“We’re here!” Their mother told them as they pulled into one of the farms. The farm had hay bales and pumpkins decorating it, with a sign that said “Pumpkin Patch” in big orange letters.
The little girl squealed in excitement while the oldest boy clapped. The car followed the signs that pointed them to the open field designated as a parking lot. Once the car came to a stop, a chorus of unbuckling sounds could be heard as the family filed out of the vehicle.
Rin went around and helped his daughter jump out of the car. She was followed by Hikaru, her older brother. Izumo helped Rukio on the other side. Rin has to hold Yuriko’s hand to keep her from running off. She was determined to find the biggest pumpkin.
Hikaru took the lead, taking his family over to the nearest line of pumpkins. He and his sister quickly examined every gourd, checking for height, roundness, and stem quality. Even Rukio seemed excited to pick his own pumpkin, but he kept hold of his mother’s hand as he pulled her with him to look at the selection.
In the moment, they were like any other family picking out their Halloween pumpkins. Hikaru found a standard round pumpkin. Not too big and not too small. He claimed it was just right for carving. Yuriko found a pumpkin as tall as her and was bubbling over with anticipation of carving it and possibly hiding in it. Rukio found a smaller pumpkin, but it was uniquely white like his hair. He liked that the pumpkin was different from all the rest.
Rin helped carry Yuriko’s pumpkin (he was pretty sure it weighed more than her). The boys carried their own pumpkins. Izumo picked a tiny pumpkin to go with their collection. The family paid for their picks then carried their purchases to their car. Rin loaded the pumpkins into the trunk, then escorted his family to the line waiting for the hayride.
When it was their turn to hop into the back of the trailer covered in square hay bales, Rin lifted all three kids onto the trailer. Then using his demonic strength he lifted his pregnant wife up too. Luckily, no one noticed his display of strength. The family sat together on the bales of hay, the kids in-between their parents. The tractor pulled the trailer around the farm, letting the family see more than just the pumpkin crop. When they passed by a field of black and red cows, Yuriko tried calling them. She begged her father to let her go pet them, but Rin said they can’t leave the ride.
When the ride was over, the family finally left the farm and went back home up the mountain.

With the coming of the end of the Heisei era in the following weeks, I think it’d be great to drop in some recommendations of shows from the Heisei era of Ultraman for those interested in picking up the series! For now I’m focusing on the New Generation Phase of Ultraman as it’s a shorter and more accessible list (and most of them are official releases!)
Welcome to...
MC’s List of Shows from the NEW GENERATION PHASE of ULTRAMAN (2013-2018)
I’ll do my best to describe each show as simply as possible for newcomers to choose! As like all other shows, even in Tokusatsu, there’s a show for everyone. It may resonate with you, or it won’t. And that’s totally fine! And that’s why this guide is made in the first place!
1.) Ultraman Ginga
Tumblr media
Airdate:  July 10, 2013 - December 18, 2013
No. of Episodes: 11
Genres: Sci-fi, Superhero, School Drama
Description:  A young man named Hikaru Raido was drawn into visiting his old hometown. But after getting his hands on a mysterious item called the Ginga Spark, Hikaru discovers he can Ultlive and transform into giant monsters with it. And when trouble arrives in the form of another giant monster, Hikaru calls upon Ginga's power and Ultlives into Ultraman Ginga. With Ultraman Taro as his guide, Hikaru fights as Ginga to protect the town and fight off the source of the darkness that influences the hearts of some of the townsfolk.
Notes: - Keiichi Hasegawa (notable veteran screenwriter for Tsuburaya -- Main writer for SSSS.GRIDMAN, Ultraman Nexus, Ultraman Dyna, etc.) is credited for Ginga’s Series Composition and as Main Writer. - After a long cold period, this is the first Ultraman show that returned to air on TV since Ultraman Mebius’ debut in 2006. - This show is also to celebrate Ultraman Taro’s 40th anniversary. - The show’s core theme is “Dreams” - Very experimental as it kind of strays away from the standard Ultraman formula. It’s also extremely low budget for a number of reasons.
Where to watch? - Crunchyroll - TOKU
2.) Ultraman Ginga S
Tumblr media
Airdate:  July 15, 2014 - December 23, 2014
No. of Episodes:  16
Genres: Sci-fi, Superhero, Action (and LOTS OF IT)
Description:  Two years after the events of Ultraman Ginga, Hikaru returns to Japan from his around-the-world adventures after seeing a vision. A new threat led by Alien Chibull emerges, as he and his minions sought out to steal the Victorium crystals that were hidden under the earth's crust. With all this going on, Ultraman Ginga returns to aid Hikaru who was later enlisted to a newly formed defense team called UPG, as they protect the city and fight off against the invaders.  However, Ginga isn't the only Ultraman fighting. Knowing that losing the crystals would endanger his people, a mysterious young man named Shou wields the Victory Lancer and Ultlives into Ultraman Victory, to team up with Hikaru and Ginga and fight off Chibull.
Notes: - This is Season 2 of Ultraman Ginga. - Koichi Sakamoto is credited as Main Director for this series. - The show’s core theme is “Monsters can be friends too!” - Lots of explosions.
Where to watch? - Crunchyroll - TOKU
3.) Ultraman X
Tumblr media
Airdate:  July 14, 2015 - December 22, 2015
No. of Episodes: 22
Genres: Sci-fi, Superhero, Anthology
Description:  15 years ago, the Ultra Flares began to appear, causing dormant monsters frozen as Spark Dolls to awaken into their original forms. XIO was established in order to handle the sudden emergence of monsters. Daichi Oozora is an officer and a scientist at XIO who began hearing a mysterious voice calling him to "Unite". But after being caught in the middle of a monster attack, the source of the voice united with Daichi, becoming the newest hero, Ultraman X.
Notes: - This is the first Ultraman show and Tokusatsu show in general to have been simulcasted outside of Japan. - Yu Kamio and Ukyo Matsumoto who played Dr. Maki (OOO) and Taiga Hanaya (Ex-Aid) respectively from the Kamen Rider series also appear in this show as Captain Kamiki and Officer Hayato as regular cast members. - The show’s core theme is “Reaching out to the unknown”. - It’s classic Ultraman, but is given a modern (this decade’s) twist. - Features a number of past series’ Ultramen making guest appearances.
Tumblr media
Where to watch? - Crunchyroll - TOKU
4.) Ultraman Orb
Tumblr media
Airdate:  July 9, 2016 - December 24, 2016
No. of Episodes:  25
Genres: Sci-fi, Superhero, Anthology, Mystery, Drama
Description:  Naomi Yumeno along with her SSP crew were just working on their latest scoop until a massive storm hits their city. They were then saved by a mysterious harmonica-playing wanderer named Gai Kurenai. Unbeknownst to Naomi and her team, Gai is not of Earth. And once he raises his Orb Ring, combined with the powers he borrowed from his Ultra predecessors, Gai transforms into this world's savior, Ultraman Orb!
Notes: - This show celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Ultraman series, as well as Ultraman Tiga’s 20th anniversary. - Hideo Ishiguro who plays Gai Kurenai previously portrayed as Kai from Kamen Rider Den-O. - The show’s core theme is “Regaining your true self“. - Once again strays slightly away from the standard Ultraman formula, but somewhat closely resembles Ultra Q.
Where to watch? - Crunchyroll - TOKU
5.) Ultraman Geed
Tumblr media
Airdate:  July 8th, 2017 – December 23, 2017
No. of Episodes: 25
Genres: Sci-fi, Superhero, Action, Drama
Description: Dreaming to become like his childhood hero, Riku Asakura was just your "average teenage Earthling" whose life begins to turn around after a monster destroyed his home. When he was given the Geed Riser, he finds out can transform into his true form: Ultraman Geed. However Riku would soon discover his true origins: that he is actually the son of the fallen Ultraman, the evil Ultraman Belial!
Notes: - This show commemorates the 50th anniversary of Ultraseven, hence why his son, Ultraman Zero appears in it as well. - The theme of bonds between parent and child is one of the focal points of the show, along with “Identity”. - Once again directed by Koichi Sakamoto, but with less explosions this time. - This show closely connects to the main canon timeline. - This serves as the final chapter of Zero and Belial’s arc.
Where to watch? - Crunchyroll
6.) Ultraman R/B
Tumblr media
Airdate:  July 7, 2018 – December 22, 2018
No. of Episodes: 25
Genres: Sci-fi, Superhero, Family Drama, Comedy
Description: After their mother’s sudden disappearance, two brothers -- Katsumi and Isami Minato, along with their father Ushio and younger sister Asahi, try their best to live their lives peacefully as a family. But when trouble strikes in their home town of Ayaka City, the brothers were suddenly given the Gyros and the power to transform into Earth’s newest protectors, Ultraman Rosso and Ultraman Blu!
Notes: - Focuses more on home/family comedy. - Is loosely connected to the Orb universe. - Celebrates Ultraman Ginga’s 5th, Ultraman Taro’s 45th, and Ultraman Gaia’s 20th anniversaries.
Where to watch? - Complete season English subbed by Color Timer Subs

Just remember my super crack onk theory from a year ago. (Way before we got any information on Tsukuyomi or Hikaru.)
Basically: The hoshigans are a symbol of favor from the god of entertainment Amenouzume. But another god got upset about this because people are worshipping celebrities like gods, even though they're only humans. So they drove a hoshigans holder (Hikaru) into insanity and influenced him into murdering other hoshigans havers. Amenouzume is extra upset because her favorite human Ai dies, she sends Tsukuyomi (at that time crow girl) to counteract this. Aqua and Ruby were specifically reincarnated, one to make Ai understand love and two to stop Hikaru.
Obviously this ended up being way off but still I wanna throw this out. Honestly I kinda miss all the crazy theories on Tsukuyomi before canon took them out and shot them in the head.

I can’t wipe away what I know was preordained
AN: Sequel to the most pathetic reincarnation ever. I wasn't planning on part 2, but @dianya14 was interested in it. This is probably not what you meant, but this is whar my mind came up with.
TW for Himekawa Airi.
It was obvious Hikaru was still suspicious of my behavior, but thankfully, he chose to believe me and smiled at me.
"Okay!" he says brightly, then jumps off my bed. "Now, come on, we can't be late!" and he runs out of the room to get changed.
Letting out a sigh, I have no choice, but to do the same and follow after Hikaru. Apparently, according to the memories I have now, arrangements have already been made and there is no getting out of this.
Not without serious consequences to Hikaru and I, and that's something I didn't want.
****
On the way to Lala Lai, I tried to come up with a plan to avoid canon and Airi.
My first instinct was to run away as far as possible, but there were two problems with that idea:
1. I didn't know how to survive on the streets, much less in Japan.
2. My conscience wouldn't allow me to abandon Hikaru who is a child and clearly adores and loves his older brother. If I leave now, it will only add to his future trauma and guilt would eat me alive. Even if I take him with me, we have no adults to turn to for help.
So I dismissed that idea right away.
I couldn't dissuade Hikaru from his dream either. Considering, he's Hoshino Ai of the acting world, he will be accepted on the spot even with such a useless twin like me. Plus, he's really determined to become famous and leave the orphanage together, so that would not work either. He simply wouldn't understand why I would want to abandon everything when we just started to realize our dream and freedom from the orphanage.
In short, we can't avoid canon and Himekawa Airi.
The choices on how to deal with her were also limited. In theory, I could tell on her once she starts her advances toward Hikaru, but... who would believe an orphan child that an adult respected actress would molest someone? Not to mention, society's general stance on rape and victim blaming is almost the same everywhere in the world, not just in super traditional Japan. It's worse when it comes to boys and those in the entertainment industry, which is why Airi and Hikaru turned out the way they did.
So, in conclusion...
....The only choice I had was to glue myself to Hikaru and observe Airi like a hawk. The thought caused me to groan inwardly. Ugh! If only I was back in my original adult body and not ten, this would have been easier! As it is, things were going to suck.
Big time.
***
Given this is was not yet the version of Lala Lai I saw in the Tokyo Blade arc, the place Hikaru and I stepped into upon our arrival wasn't very big and most of the members were adults. The last fact caused Hikaru to clamp shut and grab my arm for comfort.
I wasn't completely surprised. Hikaru was shy by nature and being surrounded by strangers made him uncomfortable. That reaction and lack of people around our age also probably played a role in why he trusted Airi so eagerly.
Or so I theorized. To be honest, I was antsy as well, being a huge introvert myself, but I had to be on guard in case that snake and other nefarious adults lurked around.
We are on our own here and can only depend on each other, after all.
"Hello, are you the Kamiki twins?" A voice spoke suddenly, causing us to look at the speaker. I recognised him immediately of course.
Uehara Seijuro.
My first impression of the man is that he was... Bland. His eyes shone with kindness, but his appearance and demeanor were completely unassuming. If I passed him on the street, I wouldn't spare him a second glance much less recognize him as an actor and ask for an autograph. No wonder he struggled with work with such aura and why Taiki thought he seduced talented entertainers to make himself feel better.
"We are," I answer politely with a customary bow and a smile, with Hikaru doing the same as the man came closer. "I'm Kamiki Haruki and that's my brother Hikaru. Thank you for having us."
"I'm Uehara Seijuro," the man says, crouching down to our level. "Welcome to Lala Lai. If you will ever need help, don't hesitate to ask. We are all family here."
My smile didn't twitch as he spoke those words. Family yeah, right. Tell that to your wife who is a rapist. I still feel sorry for him, though. He totally chose the wrong profession and married the wrong person. No wonder he snapped once canon Hikaru told him the truth.
Poor guy. Love was fatal for him as well.
Keeping those thoughts to myself, I say, "Thank you, Uehara-san. We'll keep that in mind."
"You are welcome," the man says, his eyes moving to Hikaru. "Is your brother okay? He's really quiet."
"He's okay, just shy around new people and places," I say with a slight smile.
"Understandable," the man says, getting to his feet. "Now let's meet with Kindaichi-san, he wants to see how you act."
At these words, I swallow nervously. Here it is, the moment of truth.
In contrast, Hikaru seemed to gain confidence. Still holding my hand, he leads me towards the stage. The closer we got to the stage, the louder my heart beat, echoing in my ears, palms sweating. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore.
"Hikaru, wait," I call out in a nervous whisper. My twin stops to look at me in confusion.
"What's wrong, Nii-san?"
"I... I can't do it. Go on the stage without me."
"Huh?!" that shocks Hikaru beyond belief. "But why?!"
Because I'm an impostor, a misplaced soul that was transported here for unknown reasons. I'm not suited for the entertainment industry and its manipulations. I lack the charisma and talent. I'm a person who isn't supposed to exist in this world in the first place and who doesn't know how to prevent your future nightmare.
This is what I want to say. But I can't.
Still, that leaves my lips is also the truth.
"Because I will fail," I confess in a trembling voice, throat tight. "You are much better at acting than I am. I will just ruin everything so... shine as you are meant to."
"No way!" he exclaims indignantly. "You are amazing at acting too, Nii-san! You are the one who inspired me to act in the first place."
That was before this pathetic, useless person took over as your brother. I shake my head. "I'm not," I mumble, looking down.
For a beat, neither of us says anything. Then Hikaru speaks again.
"Onii-chan, look at me," The change of suffix and seriousness in his voice make me raise my head. Our eyes meet. "Between the two of us, I was the shy one ever since we were born. If I was afraid or hesitated, you were here to support me. Always. Now it's my turn to do the same for you. Trust me that you can do this. We will shine together or not at all," he says with conviction.
My breath hitches at the bright stars in his eyes. My eyes stung. My family, my friends, my previous life; all of it was gone in a flash. Everything was foreign as I was thrust into Oshi No Ko just before the darkest moment is about to occur. And here he was, the boy I struggled to think of a way to protect, offering his help like a salvation.
I didn't deserve it. But I was grateful not to be alone and have it nonetheless.
"You are right," I say, wiping my tears away. "Thank you, Hikaru. Let's do it."
He nods and we proceed onto the stage. For the moment, I let go of my worries and allow myself to have fun while acting alongside my twin.
Needless to say, in the end, Kindaichi-san was impressed by our acting and accepted us into Lala Lai.
And thus, we stepped into the lion's den.
***
I found myself enjoying learning acting more than I thought I would and was slowly adjusting to living as Haruki the following days. However, I did not forget the looming danger over my brother and kept my word by gluing myself to Hikaru — luckily he didn't mind and we mostly hung around each other, — and watching Airi like a hawk.
So far, she hasn't made a move. But I saw her glances and the way she spoke to us and knew she would strike soon.
And my instincts were not wrong.
"Nii-san, look!" Hikaru's excited shout interrupted my reading. I smile.
"What is it?" I ask, putting the book aside. Hikaru runs up to me, showing me a box of expensive-looking Japanese sweets.
This is not something we can afford.
"Look what Airi-san got us!" he exclaims happily. My blood turns cold.
So she made a move at long last.
"Airi-san?" I ask, voice even as I press my lips into a thin line.
"Uh, yeah, " Hikaru's excitement diminishes as he picks up on the shift in my mood. "She said she was impressed by our acting and wanted us to feel welcome and when I mentioned you have a sweet tooth she got us these. "
I grit my teeth. That fucking bitch. No doubt she saw how much Hikaru loved me and decided to get to Hikaru through me.
Well, I won't be bribed into being an accomplice. Over my dead body.
"Hikaru, " I say, voice hard. "I must ask you to return these to Himekawa-san. Thank her for her consideration, but say it was unnecessary."
"But why?" the confusion and innocence in his expression make my heart ache. "You love sweets, I thought they would make you happy."
"I do love sweets," I agree, softening my tone. "And I appreciate that you want to make me happy. But I won't accept anything from Himekawa-san. Ever. Her intentions are... not pure."
Hikaru's eyes widen at my words. "You think she's like the adults at the orphanage?" he asks, voice shaking.
I do not think. I know. And she's much, much worse than our caretakers back there. I nod.
My confirmation makes Hikaru shake harder and he engulfs me in a hug.
"I'm so so sorry, Nii-san," he apologizes tearfully.
"It's fine, you didn't know, " I soothe, returning the hug. "Just don't interact with her if possible and return the sweets."
"I will," he promises fervently. "I love you, Haruki-nii."
"I know," I say softly.
I can't return those words. Not yet. But Hikaru is my responsibility now, and I will protect him in any way I can.
And that means facing Airi.
***
She finds me herself later that same day.
"You know it's rude to refuse gifts, Haruki-kun," she chides me like a mother would as she approaches me while I finish clearing the room after my practice with Hikaru who went ahead. "You made Hikaru-kun return mine."
Unlike her husband and some other members, she knew how to tell us apart. Which doesn't surprise me. She's a good actress and knows how to read people.
"Not if they come from suspicious adults," I say flatly, not looking at her. "Such gifts have strings attached."
"Aren't you a smart boy," the woman coos, coming closer. "What makes you think my gift has strings attached?"
I stop my task to regard her with a cold expression. "I see the way you look at my brother. You wish to take his light."
She freezes for about a second at my accusation before dropping all pretense.
"So you know," she breathes out, an unstable look taking over her features. "Know what those filthy men had done to me, took away from me... You and Hikaru, you shine so brightly...If I have either one of you, I'll feel like my old self again...!"
I stare at the crazy woman in horror. I knew she was after Hikaru, but me as well? What did I do to draw her attention? I was a lesser twin.
No, that's not important right now! Focus, Haruki!
"If you touch my brother," I threaten, clenching my fists and jaw. "I'll— "
"—You won't do nothing!" she finishes for me, laughing sinisterly. "Nobody will believe you!"
Unfortunately, she was right. But I can't let her touch Hikaru. She will ruin him.
There was only one choice to do then. Willingly surrendering myself to the beast.
"Then," I say slowly, expression blank, "take me instead. Just don't touch Hikaru."
She did say I caught her eye. I'll use that to my advantage.
Airi stares at me with wide eyes — I know that look. It means my stars turned black — before she explodes into delighted laughter.
"Aren't you a good big brother, Haru-kun," she coos again, touching my cheek. "Don't worry," she whispers in my ear, "I will take good care of you. "
I don't answer. There's no need to.
If we can't avoid Airi and canon at all, I'll redirect her towards myself. This way, Hikaru will be safe. And me? I can afford this sacrifice. I can afford to be the spare in this situation.
I'm a big brother now, after all.

Hi! I didn't know you liked Oshi no Ko. Have you read the latest chapters? I would love to know what you think about Kamiki and his relationship with Ai. I love your blog ❤️
Hi!
Sorry for the very long wait!
So, I actually like Hikaru Kamiki a lot as a villain, as he reminds me of Johan Liebert from Naoki Urasawa's Monster:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a matter of fact both are built on two premises:
They are satanic archetypes
They are difficult to understand
1
Johan embodies the Devil in juxtaposition to Tenma's God. He is the beautiful and brilliant angel, who fell and turned into a Demon, who opposes God's ideals. So, if Tenma (symbolically his father) believes all lives are equals, Johan (symbolically his son) believes people are equals only in death. So, life itself has no value. As a result, Johan is associated many times to demonic imagery. For example, he is compared to the Beast of the Apocalypse.
Hikaru is the Devil to Ai's Goddess. He is the child, who is loved wrong and lied to, so he loves wrong and lies. If Ai embodies the theme of true love (she loves both her fans (the macrochosm) and her children (the microchosm)), Hikaru embodies the theme of fake love (he uses his love for Ai to justify his crimes). Symbolically, he is the black star to Ai's white one. Not only that but his own name is a play on words for Lucifer aka the Devil.
2
Monster's thematic heart is Tenma and Nina's journey to understand who Johan is, so that they can understand themselves. It is a difficult quest, where every archetype, which is usually used in stories to explain "monstrosity" is subverted and deconstructed. Is Johan like this because he has a double personality? Nope. Is he like this because he was experimented on? Nope. Is he the "evil twin" who was mistreated in favor of the "good twin" Nina? Nope. So, why is Johan a monster? In the end, Tenma and Nina have a moment of realization, which is both about Johan and themselves. After all, who is Johan, but a person, like Tenma and Nina? Him being a person does not excuse his crimes and it does not even fully explain them. And yet, it is enough for Tenma, Nina and the reader to understand Johan. To understand him and to realize they can never fully understand him. Because you will never 100% understand another person. But you can empathize with them.
Oshi no ko's story is Aqua and Ruby's journey to understand both Ai and Hikaru, two sides of the same coin. Two idols. Two deities, who reacted to this god-like status in opposite ways. Ai stepped into this role by becoming love. She is a god, so her love must be the purest, most powerful one possible. She must love the world. Hikaru embraced this role by manipulating people's love and turning it into hate. He is a god, so he can live detached from other people, disregard their lives and manipulate them:
Tumblr media
That is why he manipulates also the reader by making use of medias. As a matter of fact the story is rather clear on who Hikaru is. I mean, he is literally introduced as a murderer:
Tumblr media
And a victim:
Tumblr media
So, the question is "how are these two things intertwined"? This is what the reader wants the story to tell them. However, the story offers an answer through the specific medium of the movie "15 Year Lie". The title itself says it all. In the end, the movie is a lie:
Tumblr media
How close to the truth is Hikaru's portrayal in the movie? Was he really an innocent child corrupted by the world? Did he really not mean for Airi and her husband to die? Or was their death his very first murder through manipulation? I think the story implies his portrayal in the movie is the truth, but at the same time one is free to interpret it all, as he wants. After all, it is just a movie and not a flashback or a deep dive into Hikaru's mind.
Hikaru himself says the movie did not portray his relationship with Ai correctly:
Tumblr media
And at the same time he uses his portrayal in the movie to trick both the twins and the readers:
Tumblr media
He acts as his character in the movie would. A tragic victim turned unwillingly into a murderer. A shameful and regretful criminal. A sympathetic one even. Except the character is the character and the person is the person:
Tumblr media
So, who is the person? A serial killer sure, but other than this? Did he kill Ai willingly or did he really not think things would degenerate this far? Is he the cold genius manipulator Nino describes or is he deep down a broken person like her? Or both? The answer to this... we'll never know because Aqua has the brilliant idea to fail his arc and kill himself!
Tumblr media
Aqua and Hikaru are foils. To be precise Hikaru is Aqua's shadow, which means he is the part of himself Aqua needs to recognize and integrate, if he wants to grow. Except he doesn't, so he dies. Not only that, but he kills Hikaru, so we don't get to truly empathize nor to understand him. Just like Aqua gives up on trying to understand both him and Ai. As a matter of fact he disregards Ai's last wish and kills both himself and Hikaru. Two of the three people Ai loved the most. A final spit in the face of Ai's love.
This isn't surprising, though, because the trait Hikaru and Aqua share is their objectification of others. This is evident in their deaths. Both men die idolizing a woman in opposite ways:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hikaru dies idolizing Ai. He reduces Ai and their bond to his sin. He could choose to honor her memory and wishes, but instead he gives in to violence. He could celebrate the existence of their children, their shared act of creation and love. He decides to venerate his own act of destruction and violence instead. He is selfish to the end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aqua dies idolizing Ruby. He sacrifices himself to protect Ruby's life, so that she can have her dream future and inspire others with her light. All noble and good, right? Except I am pretty sure this goes against everything Ruby wants. Ruby wants to be an idol sure, but more than anything she wants her loved ones happy and safe. Aqua decided he cared more about Ruby the idol, than Ruby the person. Just like the stalker who killed Ai only loved Ai the idol and could not care less about Ai the person. Even Aqua's final narration objectifies Ruby completely:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He makes his and Ruby's second chance at life all about himself. Ruby is HIS twin, so that HE can protect her, so that HE can die before her this time. All so that HE can solve the martyrdom complex he has had as Gorou all his life. Ruby and Ai become two idols that must shine forever and ever, always bright and happy, so that Aqua can feel good about himself. Hence why his last vision of them is as idols:
Tumblr media
Except it is only a fantasy. Ai died and wished for his children to be happy with her dying breath. All so that Aqua could make both of them miserable by killing himself. Sarina died and is given a new chance at life as Ruby. All so that Aqua could trap her into an even bigger tragedy by killing himself.
Aqua kills himself, so that Ruby the idol can keep on shining. Who cares if Ruby the person meanwhile goes through hell?
So, in the end Hikaru corrupts Aqua as his shadow and there is no integration nor salvation for anyone.
This is symbolically shown by Aqua choosing an ideal love (Ai, Sarina, Ruby) over a real one (Kana). Aqua states out loud he is in love with Kana. And yet, in his final moments he does not spare her any thoughts. Why? Because a real relationship with a real person is way less perfect, romantic and epic than a fantasy one with a perfect idol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end, Aqua is unable to build a real relationship because he is unable to accept himself. Similarly, Hikaru is unable to truly build a genuine and healthy bond with Ai because he is unable to see both her and himself as people.
Here are my thoughts on the character! I went on a tangent with Aqua because by the end Hikaru is mostly used in his arc, so I thought it was important to explore him too!
I will also add I don't think my interpretation of Aqua is the one the story is going for. Still, I dislike his woobyfication, so I am interpreting him this way, which I feel it hits closer to the main theme the story set up to explore.
Thank you for the ask!

the thing abt hkai that i think gets kinda overlooked in discussion sometimes is that, in hikaru's own words, it was an incredibly fast, high octane codependent relationship yes, but what he does not mention is that it was highly codependent– on both sides. because both hikaru and ai were so desperate for acceptance and love, they revolved around each other singularly and to the point that hikaru meets LETS BREAK UP with LETS GET MARRIED with barely a moment's hesitance. they dated for less than a year
but the thing about hikaru's statement–
Tumblr media
–is that it's not entirely objective. hikaru's view of the hkai relationship is largely informed by his immense self loathing– he places himself in the role of hopelessly pining after someone who never loved him because he does not believe he can be loved and therefore the end of the relationship Had to be his entire fault rather than the true reason, that they were teenagers in horrible circumstances clinging to each other and that ai made the best choices she could even if her delivery was terrible (affectionate) because if she didn't, then it would have destroyed them both
@aihoshiino put this in an excellent way:
[...] the intended end result of codependency is the destruction and desecration of an individual's singular identity
eventually, sooner or later, hikaru and ai would have consumed any sort of identity either of them managed to build outside of their relationship, ending both "Kamiki Hikaru" and "Hoshino Ai". they'd be trapped in a world where only the two of them existed, constantly trying to please the other. it would have ended in destruction either way you look at it.
damned if they did and damned if they didn't.

Well this just got interesting, the change in the eye color. So I am taking that it's something like... "the more purple they eye the more corrupted the soul" or something like that???
I wonder if Aqua's color will be purple later on
IVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT AQUA'S COLOR CHANGING TOO. Honestly I think they might go with that..
okay, I just checked and aqua's eye color gets visibly darker whenever black stars show up..But in some scenes they also turn quite purple!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
notice aqua's left eye vs right eye.
aqua's black star itself seems to be purple too:
Tumblr media
And don't get me wrong, I don't really think they planned this from the start, it seems to be a new thing, but it does seem that twins's eyes turn to look more like their parent's whenever they turn to revenge. I think it's pretty ambiguous as to why, for example maybe the color changes with them being stuck in the past, and on a way to inherit their parent's sad fate. Maybe also, like you said, it's about soul being corrupted, maybe it means living a lie, the less authentic you become the more purple the eyes are! I mean we know atp Hikaru is a shady figure, he just watched someone die, he's a hopeless liar here. Ai had mostly purple eyes mixed with ruby, which means she was still mixing lies with her honest desire to love etc., and ruby had ai's pink eyes up until now which would mean she lived with her honest desires, and about the twins altogether: their eyes color wasnt purole from the start like their parents, I think it can symbolizes authenticy, because despite it all they were their own people not burdened by their parents' past,, until they were, whenever they go dark this path - ruby tries to copy ai while also acting like hikaru, while aqua acts like ai and hikaru too. That's when their eyes change color.
I wouldn't assign any solid meaning to the colors But It's very fun to talk like this so: airi's eyes are also purple. And we know how she was entirely tainted by the dark side of entertainment industry. And that would fit hoshino family too.

【推しの子】 fan analyses and theories intrigue me. There are some that I resonate with like there's suddenly a light bulb moment and "oh yeah! That's plausible!" but there are also some that doesn't sit well with me like the thought of "how would that even be possible?!" would always come after.
I do have my piece(s) but like how the first page of the first chapter started by saying "this story is a work of fiction", my ideas are:
a fiction of its own. You can agree or disagree but it won't really matter because I'm not Aka-sensei and my thoughts does not and will not affect the story. I am but a reader like everyone else;
influenced by the story both manga and anime It's interesting how the anime adds up some things that are not clearly stated on the manga and
basically me waiting for my questions to be answered by the end of the manga like please Aka-sensei 🙏
Finally, this is a developing post. I might make a series of posts like this when I have more ideas about the story. ✨️
Ruby knows Hikaru Kamiki as her father
Among the twins, it's always Ruby who visits her mother's grave. Hikaru also appeared to us first during the Ruby's visit to Ai's grave. That last panel in c154 where Ruby was eavesdropping through Aqua and Kamiki's conversation without a shock on her face makes me think that Ruby knows a lot more than what we all think of her.
The wall with ripped posters with only the B-Komachi poster intact belongs to a main character's room.
I say main character because I can't put a finger who but we've all seen Ruby and Aqua's room. They both had Ai's posters on their walls. But what if they (or one of them) ripped it apart because of the realization that "that" image is not the real Ai. The Ai that they saw as an idol was a lie and they only knew that when they became Ai's children. (Actually, I'm this 🤏🏻 close to saying it's Ruby's room because we saw how Aqua was affected by the script in c146 but what about Ruby who acted as Ai, who had a grasp on more or less what Ai was feeling that time?)
【推しの子】 is a documentary about Ruby as an idol with interviews done in different occasions all filmed by Hikaru Kamiki.
When chapter 153 was revealed, my immediate reaction was these interviews would just be about the movie 15 Years of Lie, starting of with Gotanda-san and Aqua's interviews. But, when I read back chapters 2 to 9, I can't help but think about the title of each interview 【Idol】 Edition, 【Manager】, 【Idol Otaku】, 【Film Director】, 【Actress】, 【Preschool Staff】, 【Former Manager】, 【Actor】 and 【Mother】 Edition. Reading the interviews somehow feels like they were not done at the same time, but they are threaded together as a documentary. For instance, the Idol Otaku interview felt it was misplaced in the timeline because if the interview happened after 15 Years of Lie, then why does he still not know that the idol in the uchiwa he is holding is actually the daughter of Ai? Also, just as how Hikaru Kamiki was surprised with the DVD Ai left for Aqua, that 【Mother】 Edition interview is also something that only Kamiki knows and he's going to reveal it through the documentary. Like son, like father.
The Ruby interview is the first time Aqua and Ruby talked again after they shot the movie
On that panel, Aqua's movement was bizarre and Ruby's confidence is scary just as how they were during chapter 143. And knowing that this particular interview was done after making the movie, it's already a known fact to the world that Aqua and Ruby are twins. Why did she address Aqua as "Aqua" and not "brother?" My idea is that because as the manga have already presented the separation between Gorou-sensei and Aqua, we have not yet seen that for Sarina and Ruby and I feel that it will be addressed sooner than later.
This is getting long so for my other ideas, I'm just going to make another post. Again, kindly keep in mind my disclaimer. 😉
