would you be willing to recommend me some venom comic runs? i'm a comics guy generally but i've never read venom. recently watched the movie and it was baller.
Hey there friend! So, Venom is coming up on 35 years as of 2023 (wow!) so you have a lot of options. There's pretty much something for everyone out there, but given that you liked the movie, I can probably point you in the right direction...
If you can get your hands on trades (or even just use them as a guide for your favorite Digital Comics Avenue) that's gonna be your best bet. The Epic Collections (link to Wikipedia) are really comprehensive. The chart even has them in order! Handy!
If you don't want to be flipping between fifty different Spider-Man series, though, you can definitely start with some of the Venom-titled books! I've tried to pick ones that don't require a whole lot of backreading.
So, easy starting point is going to be Venom: Lethal Protector (1993) #1-6. I strongly recommend reading Amazing Spider-Man #373-375 first if you can, since #375 is the first appearance of Anne Weying. LP is to this day one of my favorite series, and it has some of the best Venom and Spider-Man moments. All are written by David Michelinie, and pencils are by Mark Bagley or Ron Lim.
If you like Anne Weying, Venom: Sinner Takes All and Venom: Along Came a Spider are the two miniseries that feature her the most. Both are written by Larry Hama. The latter has art that is... kinda rough in my opinion, but if you can look past it, they're both neat. The other thing to keep in mind is that with ACAS is that it does take place in the middle of Spider-Man Clone Saga (well.. after Ben Reilly has taken up the mantle) so it's not as new reader friendly but it IS fun. I like when Anne whacks Ben.
Are these comics good? Eh... "Sinner" is probably the stronger story of the two, but when you like Anne, you can't be too picky about what you get, unfortunately!
I also absolutely have to recommend the Planet of the Symbiotes event, which immediately follows Venom: Separation Anxiety (one of my personal favorite series). I recommend "Separation" First and then just checking out a collection of the PotS event, like this one here (link to readcomicsonline). Otherwise you have to sort out which Super Specials to read and it's annoying and dumb. The nice thing about PotS is that it's an excellent story by Michelinie with.. hmm.. let's say inconsistent art, but it's very fun and even if you're a little lost by the Clone Saga stuff, don't worry about it!! You'll be fine.
And finally, if you're looking for something a little more wacky, you can't go wrong with Venom: The Madness (W: Ann Nocenti, A: K. Jones) and Venom: Carnage Unleashed (W: Hama, A: Wildman, Nichols)! They are both very 90s off-the-wall insane and just like. Absolutely bonkers-nuts. The Madness also has the distinction of introducing Eddie (and Venom's!) first love interest since Anne. Mwah! 😘
If you'd like more modern recommendations, or if you're willing to check out other hosts, I'd be happy to provide those as well! But this should be a good starting point for some fun books. Happy reading, and if any other Venomaniacs have recommendations, feel free to add on!
#venom#reading guides#comic reading guides#eddie brock#carnage#spiderman#kita talks comics#asked and answered#also sorry not recommending anything past the 90s because i've been feeling particularly grumpy about modern venom as of late lmao

I've recently done a little bit of research for some stuff adjacent to the production of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes that I'm in right now and, in checking whether certain scientific institutions and inventions would have existed during the time of the play, I discovered something kind of interesting: many of the ones I've looked up were coincidentally established within 5-10 years of the setting.
The first bunch of Sherlock Holmes stories, the source materials for this play, came out between 1887 and 1893. The Natural History Museum? Opened fully in 1883. The Prime Meridian? Officially established in 1884. Tower Bridge? Built between 1886-1894. The Tube running northwest from Baker Street? 1880. London's first electrical power station? 1882. Those are just the ones I happened to look up. Telegrams are common in the Sherlock Holmes tales, and by the later Sherlock Holmes stories, he's using a telephone and even automobiles are mentioned.
Reading the Sherlock Holmes stories with that context of a world full of rapid changes and advancements, I feel like it comes across differently. It seems to say, "There's a scientific answer for everything." His unique detecting style, based on simple observations, made it seem like the age-old problems of crime and criminals could be defeated by logic and reasoning. I think there's a level of idealism, that even the most difficult crimes are solvable and bad actors are no match for modern scientific knowledge.
Reading Sherlock Holmes cases often gives the comfortable feeling of order and justice being served. I think that's the same reason true crime content is so popular today in another age of rapid digital advances-- and if we guess the solution, it's doubly satisfying. It's also why Sherlock Holmes is so easily translated to modern day.
But that also makes me think about another book and another equally iconic character that came out around that same time period: Dracula, published in 1897. And Dracula takes a lot of the same themes and seems to say the exact opposite.
I think one of the biggest things that surprises first-time readers of Dracula is how modern Dracula feels and how much technology is used in the book. Like the Sherlock Holmes stories, it was set in roughly 'modern day' when it was written. The 'good guys' use trains, telephones, typewriters, and even blood transfusions. But when Dracula, an old-world monster, arrives in their modern newfangled city of London, all of that technology is useless against him. And so is any ability of theirs to deduce a simple scientific explanation for what's going on.
When Dracula starts sneaking into their friend’s house and sucking her blood each night, the signs are obvious, right down to the puncture marks on her neck. The reader and audience knows what’s up waaaay before the characters do. It’s infuriating! You want to jump up and down and yell, “A VAMPIRE IS KILLING HER!” But why don’t they see what’s right in front of their faces? Because they’re thoroughly modern upper-middle class British people who live in a scientifically advanced world and believe in reason.
The chaos of true evil is more powerful than logic and reason. To defeat him, they need to get on his level and use superstition and religion and folklore. It's the polar opposite of a story like "The Hounds of the Baskervilles," published five years later.
All that said... I would love to see a Sherlock Holmes and Dracula crossover. How long would it take Holmes to deduce that he had run into a real vampire? Would he make all the correct observations and keep coming to the wrong conclusions? Would he be able to accurately predict the patterns of Dracula's behavior when his opponent has superhuman abilities and can transform into multiple different types of animals?
Or, given Holmes' somewhat addictive and adrenaline-driven personality, his superior attunement to his senses, his surprising revival from the dead, and his innate instinct to 'catch his man' at any cost... would he himself make the most dangerous vampire of all?

I feel like there's a lot of ableism in villains and body horror
And that doesn't get recognized enough
Like, if a character is plot important and has a cane, villain
Disfiguring scars or facial features? Villain or morally grey
Flat affect, comedic aspect of a side character or villan
Low empathy, villain
Intellectual disability or semi verbality, probably stereotyped and a henchmen
I've seen more villains have panic attacks or full anxiety attacks then protagonists
Serious mental Illness, villain
Most of the non elderly deaf and blind characters i know are morally grey
So many villans are like Ghost from antman and the wasp
Continuous life support or medical equipment, villain
With horror, particularly body horror, it's more subtle. Less intentional I suppose
A lot of body horror and fear design is based in the uncanny valley/the abnormal, and that can get iffy really quick.
I'll start with general horror stuff since that's easiest to express
I have photophobia, the fancy term for light sensitivity. On bad days I can barely see while outside. You know who gets to have photophobia near exclusively in media, vampires and various other similar demonic creatures. It's nearly impossible to name photophobic characters who's photophobia is not a mark of their inhuman nature or possession
Possessive fits in media and in history are often based in epilepsy
Changelings probably were based in ways to excuse autism, infant mortality rates, and chronic illness. In the modern day they still hold on to this idea of your child being replaced with something not quite right, that's just a little too wordy, that doesn't act how they should
Horror around mental illness is just.. I hope i don't need to explain how aspd/psychosis/DID get screwed over unendingly
Insensitive exploitation of asylums and their history
There's plenty more, but those are the easiest for me to explain
Now body horror
Flaking skin, red inflamed bumps, disfigurement, body parts with "unnatural" flexibility, crunchy joints, stretchy or translucent skin, "overly long" limbs/fingers, rattling breaths and wheezes, dislocation with at will reduction, less or additional digits, hella pale skin, and so on cause a problem in when they become peoples comparison of reference for disabled bodies
And I completely get how that happens, there's very little open exposure and representation of disabled people. I certainly think there's nuance to be found as well within the specifics and i'm not saying that huge swaths of body horror are necessarily problematic for just being body horror.
But A, real disabled people aren't comparable to horror/fiction
B, actually intentionally basing horror off real disabilities gets gross FAST
C, stereotyping is extremely important to avoid
D, horror/body horror can exist in a wide variety of forms that don't negatively impact perceptions of disabled people
And last but not least, E, any body horror or horror fiction creators should look at why they find what they do disturbing and make an effort to unpack any internalized ableism/stigma around their content
The same with anyone writing certain villain archetypes or disabled villains
The fact that someone has neurodivergent(and i mean that beyond just adhd/autism) traits or something "wrong" with their body should not be used as an external representation of their poor character
Nor sheerly to gain sympathy points for your bad guy
Nor just to fit your prejudiced conceptions of the world

i know ive reblogged that post a couple of times now about how old internet wasn't "better" in terms of the content on it (pain olympics, rotten, meatspin, etc) but there was definitely more agency in being exposed to that content. as others in the thread said, you developed a kind of 'street smarts' about the internet, knowing which roads to avoid/which links to click and where they might take you. yeah youd take some wrong turns but thats how youd learn. just like the real world has seedy back alleys, the internet did too. and most of them were 'dead ends' anyway: tubgirl and lemon party were just the isolated image. it's not like they automatically subscribed you to mailing lists or downloaded viruses or notified your neighborhood that you'd visited. they were closer to gross-out pranks than anything nefarious, if anything just making both kids and parents more mindful of what they could find online.
i learned pretty early on that not every website about pokemon was safe just because pokemon was for kids, and i learned to identify and stay away from them; it helped that many sites/webrings were clearly labeled as either containing hentai or being 'hentai-free'. i recall many 'shrine' sites having a separate 'hentai page', like the back room at a video store, with bold #FF0000 "WARNING 18+" as a splash page before the main index. nothing could stop me from clicking it of course, but i knew what to expect if i ever did. sure there were the occasional porno popup ads, but like the seedy back alleys those were indicators that i was in a 'bad part of town' and should be hightailing it out of there anyway, malicious more often to software than psyche.
neopets and beheading videos existed on the same internet, but there was zero chance of grainy footage of iraqi POWs showing up in the same window as meerca chase. with the congealing of individual sites into The Big Four glorified RSS feeds, there is no delineation between these things, no demarcation -- site as location is eliminated. this simultaneously atomizes and flattens both war crime evidence and virtual pets into "media", bits of decontextualized data, the dreaded "content", dissolved and extruded as slop into a digital trough. a literal feed. the marked difference between internet of then and now is that i had the power to both detect and avoid that kind of content because they were in physically separate locations, whereas in modern day internet everything is in the same place, so it gets directly beamed into my face.
one of the primary reasons i never migrated to twitter was because my friends would follow porn on their main accounts, which would not affect me at all except that twitter would go "hey! look at this post your mutuals liked!" and it would be porn. like sure i can go to the public square's market for my groceries since it's popular and convenient but there's also people being drawn and quartered there sometimes (something something foucault discipline and punish surveillance state etc). the algorithm forces content on you against your will and the only way to curtail that is to feed the algorithm your information, placating a wild beast holding you hostage, hoping the panopticon will avert its gaze a moment, versus the old internet of being able to go out and hunt. if i go out into the wilderness and see a dead animal, that's unfortunate but that's life. that's their habitat. if roadkill is continuously delivered to the front door of my apartment, that is not me being a 'puritan who cant handle """"dark themes"""" or the reality of death' or whatever. thats an issue of it's my fucking house and i shouldnt have to build it up like a fortress of browser extensions to be able to choose what goes into it.

'I will go into detail if asked'
PLEASE DO. I MUST HEAR YOUR GRIEVANCES!
It must be said!
OKAY HI YES
SO i mentioned glitchtrap was robbed,, Both vanny and glitchtrap had their roles stolen, and glitchtrap is my favorite fnaf character, so i have Beef
(Note: Uhh for this rant im keeping with the idea that vanny and vannessa are the same person. Also everything i say is very biased for these three. I know i wont get what i want, but i can dream..)
What i mean by that is for the entirety of help wanted and special delivery, Glitchtrap and Vanny got alll the exposition for them to be the new modern fnaf villains. After pizza sim, we can all agree Afton's physical mind and body as we knew it shouldve been destroyed. it was the mark of a new era for fnaf, and we needed new villains!! so the old William was to be replaced by a digital copy of himself, malhare
he was introduced in help wanted. and vanny was introduced in the dlc. Their roles were helped solidified in special delivery, as the emails there revealed They were behind everything going wrong with the animatronics (as well as more general info about all three of them)
then, the trailer for security breach dropped. theres afton talking, but it has to be glitchtrap, right? ( both because 1 We didnt know about burntraps existence during the time and 2 i still think its actually glitchtrap because theres No Way Peepaw burntrap is speaking that clearly.) And vanny was made out to be this big bad villain who. Actually had a major impact..
Then the game came out and threw all the good characterization (Especially for Vanessa) out the window 💥
glitchtrap is only seen in princess quest. but princess quest was already a thing in mobile help wanted, so..
vannys presence is laughable, but heres the thing about vanessa- Her lines that were cut from the game fit her Description from the AR Emails a LOT More. she was nervous, she knew what was happening. and she wanted to Help gregory. But.. you dont see that in the final version of security breach.
The only thing that does them all justice is the therapy tapes. But they deserved so much more...
And then burntrap and the blob exist. Theyre.. whatever. But i felt like they really took the spotlight off of who was Supposed to be the main villain and it makes me a bit sad . Robbed again
i Reaally hoped Ruin would give them what they deserved (even if i knew it was never going to happen), but instead of doing that or tying up loose ends (like the blob) They added more to the pile with Mxes and The mimic(?). (I KNOOW thats what fnaf does, but that doesnt mean ill stop complaining) and vanny and vanessa and malhare are nowhere to be seen
tl;dr In all, glitchtrap and vanny were set up to be the new big bads in help wanted and special delivery, But now it feels like glitchtrap was simply a one-off villain, and Vanny didn't really do.. like anything important at all
they had tons of potential taken away by burntrap, the blob, mxes, the mimic, etc 💔

Engaging in YouTube comments can be a great way to lose your paragraphs of thought, so here is my YT comment on here for preservation. On the topic of Media Literacy: "This video is so fascinating, well done! I'm only up to 31:18, and I've already spent an hour writing several paragraphs on what has been presented so far. I know I'm contributing to the problem by not finishing the video. But I had a lot to say on the topic. It has already changed a lot by watching this far, so I'm going to see this as a "learning diary".
Media literacy has been dead before there was writing. I think of the stories of Anthropologist hiring Native Americans to interpret stone placements, only to learn the such placements were how modern folk mark where to park their car. Or when I was watching a documentary with a friend. Scientist were confused to see a lizard hand stencil in a Saharan cave. Because it looked human-esque the anthropologist concluded the lizard may have had spiritual significance. My friend, studying Aboriginal Australian culture, suggested that such a stencil would interpret as directions for hunting said lizard. "This is a place of plenty for goanna (monitor lizard)". The literacy to interpret these cultural signifiers was gone. Not because the consumers or the writers were gone, but because the control of the delivery of that media was.
Reductive Media lit is the result of reactionary culture making the jump from Murdoch newspapers and newsrooms to the digital space. The pervasiveness of online (or perhaps, as a whole, media) reactionary culture. If you say the wrong thing, you get dunked on. You see the wrong thing, you must dunk it for fake internet points, thus acclaim & thus a sense of achievement with a sense of community; a combination akin to sugar & fat. Necessary for the body, but can be addicting when combined & thus is often served in unhealthily exaggerated amount by those with financial incentive.
I'd describe reactionary culture as a culture that views discussions as a competitive intrinsic-communal action rather than an extrensic-extracommunal action. If your take on immigrants, Batman The Dark Knight or the validity of a spherical earth isn't good enough, it gets thrown in the trash & is used as example of such a waste product: (why are USAmericans so offended at the very concept of waste products)?
As a functionally post 9/11 baby, react culture has always kind of been the norm. Heck, I remember watching South Park when I was actually 8. But, the newfound prevalence of this isn't just from the digital jump, but like with newsrooms and newspapers, who owns the platforms of media that perpetuate their own interest. Of course, capitalist and reactionaries would love twitter! You have a numerical value percentage as incentive for the validity of your decisive words & actions! How often have you heard "Figure W has made a statement with over X and X, Y, Z retweets saying…" For reactionaries, fake Internet points are literal social currency. If there is a number, there is a value to interpret, a percentage to be taken and a statistic to misalign in your favour.
A lot of my views in this paragraph is based on a documentary series that looked into the rise of Rupert Murdoch's media empire (I think it's called "The Murdoch Empire? It may also be region locked to Australia as it was a government funded doco, but IDK). It was downright enlightening to hear how Murdoch would purposely pit his children against each other, believing that competition would make them more capable, and how this was EXACTLY how he ran his businesses too. His family wasn't a business, though, and his business partners weren't seen as children. To Murdoch, competition is how a community is run.
My takeaway was this; reactionaries believe that competition is progress itself, is how a community is run, and is present in all things as a universal language.
My family recently had both me, my sister and my mother attend university for the first time. We all noticed the same thing. None of the students wanted to answer the lecturer's questions. I think at first, we all just assumed that it was because a lot of them just got out of high school were talking back to the teacher got you in detention. Maybe there is some of that, that's what I thought I was feeling when I was quiet. But as I entered units that were my fields of interest, and I became eager to be corrected, I realised something. Everyone was afraid of being incorrect, not because they'll look silly or get yelled at by the authoritative figure. But because they'd get "dunked" on by the lecturers. Some of the sweetest people I've ever met! Because being incorrect is how you "lose" the competition of discourse and receive social sanctions on Twitter.
So when you see a bad political opinion or a plot hole in a movie, that's when you can receive a sense of communal accomplishment by "dunking" on the movie and receiving internet points. The same is true if the "dunk" is incorrect. Same if the "dunk of the dunk" is incorrect. And so on ad nauseam."

Predictions for Nintendo Switch Online
I think it goes without saying that the Nintendo Switch Online (or NSO) service has been controversial to say the least. The fact that we now have to pay for what used to be free online and the lack of benefits you get to subscribing has led to this service being received very poorly at least at launch. It's been about 5 years since NSO launched and a lot of that controversy has seemingly dried up either by new additions to the game library or simply the fact that we're just used to it at this point.
Now don't get me wrong there are still detractors to NSO, but it seems as if this service has been accepted for what it is despite its flaws, although I do have to agree with some of the things said by folks regarding how the service launched and how it currently is.
Now that we've gotten that out of the way, I want to lay down some predictions regarding the future of this service as I've seen some wild things being proposed by fans that sound completely unrealistic and nothing Nintendo would ever regularly do. Starting with the obvious, what future platforms will Nintendo add to the game library?
First things first, GameCube is not going to happen at least for a long time. I suspect Nintendo may add it once the Switch's successor is out but at this very moment it is laughable to consider GameCube right now. The biggest main issue is the fact that Nintendo themselves has been rereleasing GameCube games as full price Switch games. Metroid Prime Remastered and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door come to mind. I know for the most part the whole "things releasing outside of NSO means it will never come to NSO" myth has more or less died at this point but GameCube tends to be a special case here since these games still feel modern enough to resell as new games.
Another thing is to completely throw out any consideration of any mainline Pokémon games appearing on the Game Boy apps. The spinoffs sure, but actual mainline games is a bit silly. If they were somehow to be added they would need to do a lot of backend stuff to get these games properly working and so players don't cheat with the regular tools NSO offers such as rewind and restore points. It's not impossible but I see this as too much work to be worth it if simply putting these out as digital eShop releases sounds much easier. Besides if every version was put out on NSO then you'd lose the magic of Pokémon just like that, and that wouldn't be fun would it?
Okay so what do I actually think NSO is gonna add to its game library? Well unless Nintendo puts out a Virtual Boy or a Game & Watch app then I suspect we will probably see more third party apps. One consideration I don't see a ton of people talking about is the PC-Engine and TurboGrafx-16.
Games from these consoles have appeared on Virtual Console in the past on Wii and Wii U and a very limited number of PC-Engine games did release on 3DS only in Japan. I wouldn't doubt that Nintendo would add this as apart of their Expansion Pack, heck maybe even regular NSO if we're lucky. I would just love to see more NEC love (or well Konami love now).
But why stop there when the Mark III and Master System could be added too? Sega is already on board with NSO with their Mega Drive and Genesis apps so this would be a great addition especially since these games have not been given enough love even by Sega. SG-1000 would also be cool but that might be a bit too niche for a service like NSO but who knows.
As for games, while there is quite a bit already on the service there are certainly omissions that are quite baffling so let's get some of the more obvious ones out of the way and in no particular order.
Gomoku Narabe Renju, Mahjong, Golf, Urban Champion, SimCity, Mario Paint, Super Smash Bros., Ridge Racer 64, Banjo-Tooie, Super Mario Land, Qix, X, Balloon Kid, Mole Mania, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, Pokémon Pinball, Densetsu no Stafy 1-3, Mother 3, and Rhythm Tengoku just to name a few.
So lets start with one that might not be interesting at a glance but would be a great addition to the service.
Tetris for the NES (no, not the Tengen version) is one of the more iconic versions of this beloved puzzle game, but why go back to this version specifically? I mean we already have Tetris on the Game Boy app and plenty of other Tetris games on Switch so what's the deal here?
Well for one, this version has never seen any kind of rerelease... kind of. This version in terms of how it played was ported over to Tetris Effect: Connected as a side mode but unless you knew about it I'd imagine not a whole lot of folks have dabbled with it and it's still technically not the original game.
But secondly, the main reason why this mode even exists and also why I personally would like to see it on NSO is purely to make the game accessible to a wider audience considering the competitive scene of this specific classic version of Tetris.
Being able to play this on NSO would mean a ton more people get to experience how this version plays and more importantly gives players another option of playing this without resorting to unofficial PC emulation. Obviously pro players are going to stick to original hardware but if you just wanted to practice or wanted a taste of this version then it's no wonder that having it on Switch would be a dream. Hopefully with the Game Boy version already being on the service this will increase the chances of this one happening.
So this next one is already planned to release for NSO in Japan but there's no word on it releasing internationally but regardless...
...Kaeru no tame ni Kane wa Naru or as its unofficially known as The Frog For Whom the Bell Tolls. It's an action RPG that's often compared to Link's Awakening to the point where in said Zelda game there's a cameo appearance featuring Prince Richard from Bell Tolls. This is one of the more well known Nintendo developed games that never left Japan and as of writing has never seen an official English localization of any kind and unfortunately there seems to be a trend with international NSO releases having Japanese games that have not been translated. So the likelihood of this not only releasing outside of Japan but getting a new localization for NSO is very unlikely but it's more than possible given Nintendo puts in the work to translating this in English. I'd imagine a remake of this game being far more likely to getting an international release if that were to happen and hey if it's in the style of the Link's Awakening remake that would be pretty cool.
So let's move away to one that might actually happen.
This one's pretty straight forward and don't be scared by this being Japan exclusive as outside of some story cutscenes this one's perfectly playable as its mainly a puzzle game. It has seen rereleases in the past on Virtual Console and if it were to release on NSO it's very likely that it would release internationally since the benefit of Nintendo not putting in effort to localize these games means they can just drop this on the SNES app no problem. Also good time to mention that this also includes the original Wrecking Crew so it would be funny to see Wrecking Crew on the service twice.
So let's end this game prediction saga with one that probably will never happen but if it were to happen I'd be curious how it would be implemented.
So let's get this out of the way, this is an M rated game. For a while it was believed that Nintendo would shy away from more mature games from appearing on the service but GoldenEye 007 on N64 at least in Japan indicates that Nintendo's solution is purely to bump up the rating of the overall app. So I'd imagine if this were to drop on NSO we'd not only see a rating bump for the N64 app but hopefully some kind of parental control option to stop players under 17 from playing this one. While it would be cool to see this on NSO in terms of being able to play it on a Nintendo platform again, I purely would like to see this get added just to see what they'd do to the app in response to this M rated addition to the service.
And there are my NSO predictions as of November 2023. I do wonder when the next Nintendo platform releases if we'll see an uptick in support for the service but its likely that this slow trickle of games will continue as usual. I'd normally would wish for more platforms to be represented on NSO but the problem is that some of the ones already on the service are very lacking especially Game Boy and Game Boy Advance. Hopefully those libraries get beefed up soon.

Below is a piece I’d written for a compliance industry blog but it was perhaps too close to the edge for ‘the office’. It relates to horror and modern society though perhaps not an exact match here. Still I include it as I would like to touch on issues of mundane horror, or the horror of everyday life, as perhaps Thomas Ligotti does with his short stories, though I am not nearly so glamorous. Still we all feel a certain sense of the uncanny in the everyday, the unity of the paradox as Luhmann says, so here you go, a little food for chit chat around the water cooler—
The importance of work-life balance:
‘Bad apples’ are out of fashion. Still, some studies estimate 3.5% of business executives exhibit ‘psychopathic characteristics’ (as opposed to 1% of the general population). Ironically those same executives may be the most exciting leaders.
Certainly, in an overtly corrupt environment it is much easier for ‘bad apples’ to conspire. Plus, ‘good apples’ are less likely to blow the whistle. With the idea of compliance culture there is the comforting illusion of control.
Psychopaths are unpredictable. Yet, some suggest they play an outsized role in societal dysfunction or political terror. Some hint that psychopaths could be the key to understanding modern society. The quintessential psychopath is often thought of as the serial killer, but this is misleading. Fears about psychopaths, ‘neckties, contracts’ and lawsuits are all modern fears.
In The Social Network, director David Fincher relates the harrowing tale of Mark Zuckerberg, a less murderous if still cutthroat H. H. Holmes for the Information Age.
In another Fincher film, the killer asks his helpless victim: “Why don’t people trust their instincts? They sense something is wrong. Someone is walking too close behind them. You knew something was wrong. But you came back into the house. Did I force you? Did I drag you in? No. All I had to do was offer you a drink. It’s hard to believe that fear of offending can be stronger than the fear of pain, but you know what? It is . . .” – perhaps worth thinking about in the context of society and ‘compliance culture’.
Tellingly in The Social Network, as Zuckerberg’s star is on the rise he meets again the young woman who first rejected him and sparked his digital ire. He asks to speak with her alone, but she refuses – “I was nice to you, don’t torture me for it,” she says.
The Social Network is a modern folk tale, but from the wolf’s perspective, about the dangerous collapse of the public/private distinction. The serial killer as ‘unsub’ similarly reflects the disintegration of the individual subject from the private into the statistical public sphere. Sean Parker in The Social Network warns the younger Zuckerberg, “Whatever it is that’s gonna trip you up you’ve done already. Private behavior is a relic of a time gone by.”
The family too is a relic some would say, a social network that lends itself to corruption, specifically kleptocracy but also in this context the childhood abuse that may contribute to a psychopathic personality. In contrast to the family we have the corporation – which some fear could eclipse even the state. Like the serial killer, and notwithstanding corporate social responsibility, the corporation remains a ‘person’ without a conscience.
One can perhaps then see the risk of a collapse between public/private, work and life. To illustrate further, Brandon Cronenberg’s ultra-violent (à la the Brothers Grimm perhaps) Possessor presents the case for such a dystopia, wherein family life itself is fatally erased, to be replaced entirely by the corporation, which finally renders corruption and society indistinguishable.

None of this is wrong, but as someone who has been hawking my writing for over two decades now, and works in submissions editing, I’ve got some addendums about *why* this advice is so often given, and why it can make decent editing advice (so long as you stay sensible about it.)
For a lot of people, editing while you write isn’t helpful, it’s better to get the words down without fretting about that sort of stuff. Editing happens later, when you’re trying to make your writing look more like you *want* it to look.
1. The passive voice is a tool. Is it the tool you want?
One of the things it can do is remove agency from your writing, and create a slower, more detached pace. If that’s what you want, EXCELLENT. If not, it’s the wrong tool for the job.
2. Adverbs are a question of fashion.
Currently the fashion in publishing/among readers is for shorter sentences and faster-paced prose. The argument against them is that there is often a verb that already includes the modifier, not “she ran quickly” but “she sprinted.” However, there are plenty of adverbs to which this doesn’t apply (and that people will use without thinking about it, while claiming they deplore adverbs…)
Me, I love an adverb usefully deployed. They can help create tone (archaic, colloquial, humorous), but too many will switch off readers and submissions editors.
3. Filler, yep, absolutely agree, in terms of plot but.
A lot of modern writers imagine their work as though they’re watching a film or TV show, which means they include a lot of… unnecessary stage direction. Prose is a different format - we don’t need to know every hair twirl and half step and blink and double take. It’s not actually serving anything, and it’s distracting your reader from the stuff you want them to see. You can choose to do that as a stylistic thing, but it’s not a great default.
There’s also the great drafting tool known as “writing yourself in” to a story/character/scene. This is really valuable work, but your reader very rarely needs to see it. It’s the writing equivalent of a warm up exercise. Important at the draft stage, lose it in the edit.
4. ORTHOGRAPHY IS WHAT YOU PAY YOUR EDITORS FOR.
It’s worth learning not to to do anything too egregious (lavender paper, writing in fonts like Papyrus) because terrible orthography will piss off the people who read your subs. But anyone who is throwing out your MS over the wrong kind of dash, or speech marks, is a wanker you don’t want to be working with anyway. ESPECIALLY as the rules around it vary from place to place.
Everywhere you sub to will have a house style for this, and it is the editors job to make your work fit it. If you’re self publishing, this is why paying an editor (or learning to do it yourself) matters. It’s why editors are so damned expensive. They fix that stuff for you.
If you’re doing it yourself, it doesn’t matter until the final edit in any case (although having it fixed from the start will save you time).
So, yeah, read the submission guidelines to anywhere you’re submitting to about how they like stuff formatted and follow them - but ime most of them aren’t that strict because they know they’re getting subs from around the world, and will need to standardise everything anyway. Everything is digital now anyway, so it’s not actually that big a ballache to fix them,
If you’re DIYing, it’s worth looking up the conventions of what you’re trying to do. (Full disclosure, I’m low-cost self-pubbing something right now, and the orthography stuff is driving me round the bend.)
5. Boobs. No notes.
actual writing advice
1. Use the passive voice.
What? What are you talking about, “don’t use the passive voice”? Are you feeling okay? Who told you that? Come on, let’s you and me go to their house and beat them with golf clubs. It’s just grammar. English is full of grammar: you should go ahead and use all of it whenever you want, on account of English is the language you’re writing in.
2. Use adverbs.
Now hang on. What are you even saying to me? Don’t use adverbs? My guy, that is an entire part of speech. That’s, like—that’s gotta be at least 20% of the dictionary. I don’t know who told you not to use adverbs, but you should definitely throw them into the Columbia river.
3. There’s no such thing as “filler”.
Buddy, “filler” is what we called the episodes of Dragon Ball Z where Goku wasn’t blasting Frieza because the anime was in production before Akira Toriyama had written the part where Goku blasts Frieza. Outside of this extremely specific context, “filler” does not exist. Just because a scene wouldn’t make it into the Wikipedia synopsis of your story’s plot doesn’t mean it isn’t important to your story. This is why “plot” and “story” are different words!
4. okay, now that I’ve snared you in my trap—and I know you don’t want to hear this—but orthography actually does kind of matter
First of all, a lot of what you think of as “grammar” is actually orthography. Should I put a comma here? How do I spell this word in this context? These are questions of orthography (which is a fancy Greek word meaning “correct-writing”). In fact, most of the “grammar questions” you’ll see posted online pertain to orthography; this number probably doubles in spaces for writers specifically.
If you’re a native speaker of English, your grammar is probably flawless and unremarkable for the purposes of writing prose. Instead, orthography refers to the set rules governing spelling, punctuation, and whitespace. There are a few things you should know about orthography:
English has no single orthography. You already know spelling and punctuation differ from country to country, but did you know it can even differ from publisher to publisher? Some newspapers will set parenthetical statements apart with em dashes—like this, with no spaces—while others will use a slightly shorter dashes – like this, with spaces – to name just one example.
Orthography is boring, and nobody cares about it or knows what it is. For most readers, orthography is “invisible”. Readers pay attention to the words on a page, not the paper itself; in much the same way, readers pay attention to the meaning of a text and not the orthography, which exists only to convey that meaning.
That doesn’t mean it’s not important. Actually, that means it’s of the utmost importance. Because orthography can only be invisible if it meets the reader’s expectations.
You need to learn how to format dialogue into paragraphs. You need to learn when to end a quote with a comma versus a period. You need to learn how to use apostrophes, colons and semicolons. You need to learn these things not so you can win meaningless brownie points from your English teacher for having “Good Grammar”, but so that your prose looks like other prose the reader has consumed.
If you printed a novel on purple paper, you’d have the reader wondering: why purple? Then they’d be focusing on the paper and not the words on it. And you probably don’t want that! So it goes with orthography: whenever you deviate from standard practices, you force the reader to work out in their head whether that deviation was intentional or a mistake. Too much of that can destroy the flow of reading and prevent the reader from getting immersed.
You may chafe at this idea. You may think these “rules” are confusing and arbitrary. You’re correct to think that. They’re made the fuck up! What matters is that they were made the fuck up collaboratively, by thousands of writers over hundreds of years. Whether you like it or not, you are part of that collaboration: you’re not the first person to write prose, and you can’t expect yours to be the first prose your readers have ever read.
That doesn’t mean “never break the rules”, mind you. Once you’ve gotten comfortable with English orthography, then you are free to break it as you please. Knowing what’s expected gives you the power to do unexpected things on purpose. And that’s the really cool shit.
5. You’re allowed to say the boobs were big if the story is about how big the boobs were
Nobody is saying this. Only I am brave enough to say it.
Well, bye!

Top Trends in Advertising for 2024
The tide of advertising is constantly changing, with new trends emerging every year, and this upsets the means through which brands relate to their consumers. Thus, 2024 will become the perfect blend of high technology and data-driven strategies and shifting consumer values, marking an exciting and competitive advertising landscape. For businesses, therefore, it becomes an effective impetus to top the trends in order to deliver campaigns that strike a chord. Here are some of the top advertising trends to watch for in 2024, especially for any forward-thinking ad agency in Kochi.
AI-Driven Advertising Advertising today utilizes AI for ad-analytics capabilities that tap into huge data to make campaigns hyper-targeted. Platforms which have AI capability enable the improvement of ad placement with predicted consumer behavior and even content personalization for specific audiences. Any ad agency found in Kochi would save cost while increasing ad relevance and engagement through the use of AI capabilities in campaigns. The future trends are going to be even more automated and fast decisions done through AI technology.
Interactive and Immersive Experiences Interactive and immersive ads, in the form of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), are radically changing the ways and means of connecting with brands. So, here's how it feels: Imagine virtually trying on products or experiencing a store from the comfort of your home. The buzz is sweeping the world, and so now, any ad agency in Kochi can use AR and VR for memorable brand experiences. Engaging the consumers through interactive quizzes, polls, and gamified ads will ensure that people are not just mere viewers but also active participants in the process.
Sustainability and Social Responsibility Consumers have become more aware of greater environmental and social issues. They now prefer to buy from companies that demonstrate their values. This trend will evolve dramatically in 2024, compelling companies to highlight their focus on sustainability as well as social responsibility in advertisements. For a Kochi-based ad agency, the agenda of advertising campaigns should be the demonstration of the brand's support towards social causes or environmental sustainability appealing to the audience both from Kochi and the world. Authenticity is key—businesses that do not make things right and promise the wrong things are most likely to lose their customer base.
Short-Form Video Content Short-form videos on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts are becoming a mainstay of modern digital advertising. As the bite-sized version of the video, businesses can create concise, engaging messages to capture attention quickly. The creation of creative, shareable short-form videos will enable an ad agency in Kochi to convey brand messages within seconds. Whether it be through humor, creativity, or product demonstrations, short-form videos are apt for capturing fast-paced consumer attention and driving viral engagement.
The Evolution of Influencer Marketing That's certainly not the case with influencer marketing, still a very strong tool and changing more and more towards micro and nano-influencers, often with more devoted, loyal followers. In that way, an ad agency in Kochi will also find more authentic relationships by working through local influencers, which have smaller but highly active audiences. Rather than focusing just on the number of followers, today brands look at engagement levels and to what extent that matches the values the influencer stands for - which marks a more bespoke and data-driven approach to influencer marketing.
Voice Search and Smart Speaker Ads The one major shift going on in this arena is voice-activated smart speaker platforms - Google Home and Amazon Echo. Voice search is taking center stage within advertising now. An ad agency in Kochi can make the most out of it by optimizing the content to be answered using voice search, thereby creating audio-based ads that fit the smart speaker's platform. Businesses can reach this critically important audience and gain more presence in a world that may be increasingly voice-first by creating conversations and tailoring campaigns to match how people are using voice commands.
Data Privacy and Transparent Advertising To open up privacy concerns and how consumer data are applied to digital advertising, the perceptions of consumers have shifted. In fact, laws like GDPR and CCPA have taken the upper hand in restrictions on how consumer data are both collected and used. Come 2024, the business will do much in clearing out obscurity in advertising. This implies real-time divulgence about what data usage entails and giving more control to consumers over their personal information. Third-party cookies have long since disappeared into the past, but their absence will leave a gap that must be filled by more first-party data and contextual ads targeting the right people. Clearly responsible advertising will allow brands not only to meet the letter but also the spirit of the law; today, growing dependence on digital channels necessitates creating a new relationship of trust between consumers and these new media.
Programmatic Advertising and Automation Programmatic ad buying refers to the automated buying and selling of online space and is revolutionizing the way in which businesses run their campaigns of digital marketing. Advanced relevance for personalization and precision targeting will be even more of a reality by 2024. Brands can thus use real-time data to bid for ad space at the exact moment that the potential customer is probably going to engage with their content. With application in AI within the programmatic ad buying, businesses will have the opportunity to optimize the efficiency of their ad placements while making big cuts in the costs that are involved. It will enable marketers to have more time to work on strategy and creativity knowing that their ads are in the best position for their target audience.
Conclusion
Keeping up with such trends will remain essential to the brand and businesses, wishing to compete in 2024. For an ad agency in Kochi, adopting AI-driven strategies, interactive experiences, and ethical advertising practices will create deeper consumer connections. By embracing such emerging trends, businesses can build customized, engaging, and value-driven campaigns that align with modern expectations and maximize marketing impact.

Germany, France | 1997 | B&W | Sound | 35mm (digital projection) | 63’
PROGRAM Α: Opening Films 개막
2024 Oct 25 (Fri), 18:00
"VON HEUTE AUF MORGEN(From Today Until Tomorrow) is a meticulously crafted film that provocatively challenges conventional ideas. It asserts that marriage is better than infidelity, that the institution of marriage surpasses the pursuit of sexual freedom, and that one should resist temptation because it’s morally wrong. Looking at it in the context of their earlier works, there’s a clear thread of irony here, already present in Schoenberg's opera. This is what I admire most: it’s the first Straub-Huillet film to tackle ambiguity with a sense of lightness." – Alain Badiou –
The film is based on Arnold Schoenberg’s only comedy opera, which revolves around a bourgeois love triangle that eventually returns to traditional moral values. Shot in stunning black-and-white by William Lubtchansky, the film stays true to Straub-Huillet’s signature materialist style. It marks their third and final encounter with Schoenberg, following INTRODUCTION TO ARNOLD SCHOENBERG’S ACCOMPANIMENT TO A CINEMATIC SCENE(1973) and MOSES AND AARON(1975). (Il-hwan)
About Jean-Marie Straub & Danièle Huillet
Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet are a legendary film director duo often regarded as icons of modern cinema. Their films, spanning France, Germany, Italy, and beyond, have left an indelible mark on film history, with their influence continuing to this day. (Il-hwan)

Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered edited by Heike Munder, Adam Budak
Spatial emotion in contemporary art and architecture. Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich & Laznia Centre for Contemporary art, Gdansk.
Half of this book is in German so it was an interesting experience to read.
An Immense Museum of Strangeness:
Department of Spatial Fantasies by Heike Munder and Adam Budak
Connections and intersections are incorporated practices: they govern and manipulate both our conscious and subconscious spheres.
Space has seemingly appropriated us, it possesses and determines our psychophysical states of acting and being
Everything seems to be spatialized, and space becomes the dominant practice of everyday life.
The exhibition aims to exploit the psychological associations of space in the multiplicity of its emotional overtones.
Using fears, and phobias to investigate the distortion of space and the multifaceted spaces in which energy changes
Temporary and permanent spaces and the feeling of each (literally the space feels temp/perm)
Investigating the relationships and emotional connections/engrained mental effects
A space is a literal space and also what surrounds you, a space is made up of both and will always be both, it is not a space without the other (because it's impossible not to have a literal space that communicates a sense)
It is interesting to read about the different readings people get within spaces and what they focus on/look for in their subject matter, from completely empty space to a space full of objects of a daily life that no longer exists.
Psychoanalysis and Space by Anthony Vidler
A great deal of this text is focused on phobia and the notion of sexual hysteria-fueled actions. The text begins by focusing on Freud's view of psychoanalysis and its connections to agoraphobia, and claustrophobia.
He rejected the idea that "space itself, or any material object of obsession was a cause" for phobias.
I had to skip through all the sections that mentioned him and his ideas cause they are centred on sexist ideals that just reaffirmed their opinions of women and women's sexual existence. If there is something 'wrong' with a woman, it must be connected to how little sex she is having/the fact that her sex is female.
This text didn't have much to do with the type of spaces I am focusing so I just skimmed through the rest and picked out any relevant pieces.
Space within the digital world is a mimicry of the real thing, it is an artificial simulation of a never-dying/never-ending space.
Insecurity by Design by Mark Wigley
A corporate building is a fixed visible face of the organisation it houses, there is often no indicator of which organisation has taken up residency on the outside of the building. Unless it operates as a business.
During the day the interior is shrouded in mirror and invisible to those outside of the organisation, at night the grid of fluorescent lights shines through. These lights are hardly ever turned off, their existence and ever-present shine dictate their importance compared to the workers who simply use the lights to see.
There are internal spaces that are not visible through the windows, even at night. The façade is dropped but all that is revealed is an empty room.
Their sky is replaced by the fluorescent artificial sky, continuous, brightly glowing, horizontal surface that veils the shapes of the light tubes.
Worrying Conditioning of Space
The uncanniness of a space is today more closely related to the invisible.
The representation of the visible is, in this case, an indirect way of transmitting information about a vehement viral epidemic
Modernity, up until today, has created artificial physical environments. It built itself on the urban as well as domestic mastery of space and its climate.

Opera VPN encryption
Opera VPN is a popular choice for users looking to encrypt their online activities and enhance their privacy and security while browsing the internet. But what exactly is Opera VPN encryption and how does it work?
Opera VPN uses advanced encryption protocols to secure your internet connection and protect your data from prying eyes. The VPN encrypts all data traffic between your device and the VPN server, ensuring that any information you send or receive is scrambled and indecipherable to potential hackers, ISPs, or even government surveillance programs.
Opera VPN utilizes strong encryption standards such as AES-256, which is considered virtually unbreakable by modern computing standards. This level of encryption ensures that even if someone were to intercept your data, they would not be able to decipher it without the encryption key.
Encrypting your online activities with Opera VPN provides you with a layer of privacy and security, especially when using public Wi-Fi networks where cyber threats are more prevalent. With your data encrypted, you can safely browse the web, stream content, and conduct sensitive transactions without worrying about your information falling into the wrong hands.
In conclusion, Opera VPN encryption is a crucial aspect of maintaining your online privacy and security. By encrypting your internet connection with Opera VPN, you can surf the web with peace of mind, knowing that your data is protected from unauthorized access and interception.
Secure server connection Opera VPN
A secure server connection is essential for ensuring the privacy and security of your online activities. One popular tool for achieving this is Opera VPN, which is a virtual private network service offered by the Opera web browser.
Opera VPN encrypts your internet connection, making it difficult for hackers or other malicious entities to intercept your data. This encryption is especially crucial when using public Wi-Fi networks, as they are often unsecured and leave your information vulnerable to cyber attacks.
By connecting to a secure server through Opera VPN, you can browse the web anonymously without revealing your actual IP address. This not only protects your personal information but also allows you to access geo-restricted content that may be blocked in your region.
In addition to enhancing your online security and privacy, Opera VPN can also improve your browsing speed by reducing bandwidth throttling imposed by your internet service provider. This can result in a smoother and more seamless internet experience, especially when streaming videos or downloading large files.
Overall, Opera VPN is a valuable tool for anyone looking to enhance their online security and privacy. By encrypting your internet connection and masking your IP address, it provides a safe and anonymous browsing experience that is essential in today's digital age.

Title: Enhancing Security: Opera VPN Servers
In an era marked by escalating cybersecurity threats, safeguarding online privacy and security has become paramount. Opera, a renowned web browser, has endeavored to address these concerns by integrating a Virtual Private Network (VPN) service into its platform. However, users often inquire about the security measures employed by Opera VPN servers to protect their data.
Opera VPN servers prioritize security through multiple layers of protection. Firstly, they utilize robust encryption protocols to encrypt data transmitted between the user's device and the server. This encryption prevents unauthorized access and ensures that sensitive information remains confidential.
Moreover, Opera VPN servers implement advanced security protocols such as OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPSec, which offer strong cryptographic algorithms and key exchange mechanisms. These protocols not only encrypt data but also authenticate connections, mitigating the risk of man-in-the-middle attacks and other forms of cyber threats.
Furthermore, Opera VPN servers adhere to a strict no-logs policy, meaning they do not retain any records of users' online activities. This commitment to privacy ensures that users can browse the internet anonymously without their browsing history or personal information being stored.
Additionally, Opera regularly updates its VPN servers with the latest security patches and protocols to address emerging threats and vulnerabilities. This proactive approach helps maintain the integrity and security of the VPN service, providing users with peace of mind while browsing the web.
In conclusion, Opera VPN servers prioritize security by employing robust encryption protocols, implementing advanced security measures, and adhering to a strict no-logs policy. By integrating these security features, Opera aims to provide users with a safe and secure browsing experience, protecting their privacy and data from potential cyber threats.
Is Opera VPN safe
Opera VPN is a virtual private network service provided by the popular Opera web browser. Many people wonder whether Opera VPN is safe to use, considering the sensitive nature of online privacy and security.
Opera VPN uses strong encryption protocols to protect users' data and online activities. This means that when you connect to the VPN, your internet traffic is encrypted and secured, making it difficult for hackers or third parties to intercept and access your data. Opera VPN also has a no-logs policy, which means they do not keep records of your online activities, further enhancing your privacy and security.
However, it is important to note that no VPN service is completely infallible. While Opera VPN provides a layer of security and privacy, it may not offer the same level of protection as some premium VPN services. Additionally, Opera is a free VPN service, which means that there may be limitations in terms of server locations, connection speeds, and features when compared to paid VPN services.
Overall, Opera VPN can be a decent option for casual users who want to enhance their online privacy and security. It can help protect your data when using public Wi-Fi networks or accessing geo-restricted content. However, for users with higher security and privacy requirements, investing in a reputable paid VPN service may be a better choice. Always consider your personal needs and level of sensitivity of the information you are transmitting before choosing a VPN service.
Server authentication Opera VPN
Server authentication with Opera VPN ensures a secure and reliable connection for users seeking privacy and anonymity online. When utilizing Opera's VPN service, which encrypts internet traffic and routes it through a secure server, authentication mechanisms play a crucial role in verifying the identity of servers to prevent unauthorized access and potential security breaches.
Opera VPN employs robust authentication protocols such as Transport Layer Security (TLS) to establish a secure communication channel between the user's device and the VPN server. TLS ensures that data transmitted between the two endpoints remains encrypted and cannot be intercepted by malicious actors. Additionally, Opera VPN servers are equipped with digital certificates issued by trusted Certificate Authorities (CAs), which serve as cryptographic proof of their authenticity.
During the connection process, the user's device verifies the validity of the server's digital certificate to ensure that it has not been tampered with or issued by an untrusted source. This authentication step helps prevent Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks where an attacker attempts to intercept and manipulate communication between the user and the VPN server.
Furthermore, Opera VPN implements strong authentication methods such as username/password authentication or digital signatures to authenticate users and prevent unauthorized access to the VPN network. By requiring users to provide valid credentials before establishing a connection, Opera VPN ensures that only authorized individuals can access its secure servers.
Overall, server authentication with Opera VPN plays a crucial role in safeguarding user privacy and security by verifying the identity of servers and preventing unauthorized access to the VPN network. By implementing robust authentication mechanisms, Opera VPN provides users with a reliable and secure online browsing experience, protecting their sensitive data from prying eyes and potential threats.
