Moby Dick Modern AU

Captain Ahab isn't actually a captain but instead a professor in the marine biology department. He does, however, answer to "captain" instead of "professor", and will never call the captain of the ship he is currently on the captain.

Ahab is obsessed with the white whale in that he's been trying to put a GPS tracker on it for years but it always fails someway. Moby Dick is such a distinctive whale, and he really really wants to study it, but it just keeps getting away or moving at the last moment so that the suction cup gps doesn't stick...

The Pequod is a research vessel owned by Ahab's university, Starbuck is the actual captain, but is called the first mate by Ahab because.. Ahab is Ahab. So, the others started calling him that, too.

Ishmael is also a marine biologist by trade however because of his controvertial opinion (whales are fish! most species we consider fish aren't that closely related anyways! it's a description of ecological, not genetic, importance! so whales should be considered fish, too!) he has been largely shunned/considered of no importance in the scientific community. He teaches biology at a highschool instead.

Ishmael is also a trans man. That is also canon to Herman's novel but I need to underline it here bc naming yourself basically "Is-male" is such a funny joke.

Ishmael signs himself up for a research cruise under the guise of not being a biologist but a simple sailor - this ruse is discovered incredibly quickly (it only takes one infodump).

Pip is one of those brilliant kids who skip 5 grades. He's 16 and in the final year of writing his bachelor's thesis. Ahab is his supervisor.

Queequeg is the ship's chief engineer, making him 3rd most important person on the ship (after the captain and first mate; source: my childhood bff's father was one) and also making him a lot of money. The university's usual chief engineer was unavailable and Ishmael was hyped to get his hubby on the same expedition as him.

Speaking of, Ishmael and Queequeg met at a motel in Vegas, got high, cuddled all night, and then got married the next day.

Queequeg usually works on all sort of ships, spending a couple months home with Ishmael and then doing engineering for the next couple months away on the sea.

Tashtego is working on his master's in marine biology and unfortunatelly Ahab's his supervisor same as Pip except Ahab loves Pip's ideas but hates Tashtego's

Daggoo is on a scientific exchange from a university from his home country, he's just a researcher (as in, doesn't study or teach)

Fedallah is there even though he's like. Completely unrelated to marine biology. He's like a professional olympic-level archer but Ahab forged his papers to bring him aboard so that he can finally put that tracker on the Moby Dick.

The rest of the crew are a combo of researchers and regular sailor folk who are, y'know, needed for the ship to function as a ship.

Pip falls into the ocean multiple times while trying to take samples but is saved quickly every time. They just force him to essentially wear buoy marker attached to him at all times in case he was submerged and unseen.

Thinking about James/Remus and seriously questioning why it's not a thing cause

1) the whole sun/moon lore I was talking about earlier

2) their shipname would be somn like "moonchaser" or "sunreader" or somn

3) it fits right into the running gag that James has a thing for people being mean to him

💖 ship that needs more love: i deeply enjoy emercury from rwby, and every time i go check their tags i feel like there’s hardly any content for them, which is hella sad considering they tick alllll the right boxes for me--the whole ‘asshole villains who say they don’t care about anyone but are soft for each other even if they’d never admit it’ thing, their ‘in a fight, they’re lethal--around each other, they melt’ potential, mercury caring enough about emerald not to bother sugar-coating it when telling her that cinder does not care about her (she really needed that wake-up call tbh), mutual protectiveness despite neither of them needing (usually) or wanting to be protected.... idk there’s just a lot there, especially if emerald gets the redemption I think she will (which, I think, will be more ‘fuck this shit i’m out, they can all kill each other for all i care but i don’t want anything to do with it anymore’ than a sudden heel-face turn), and the potential in mercury realizing he just doesn’t care about what being a villain can Give Him so much as he wanted to be there because emerald was there, and there’s hardly any fic or art of them and I Want More Damnit

💣 ship that pisses you off: hmmmmmmm i think for this i’ll have to go back to my roots and say riley/buffy from btvs. (did they even have a shipname or was riley really that inconsequential? ruffy? biley? idfk) like, there are a lot of ships that have actively pissed me off over the years, but i think riley is one of the most like... because it has the reputation of being ‘buffy’s one Nice And Normal Relationship with a Nice And Normal Guy’ and i hate so much that people remember that and forget the fact that like, riley straight up admitted that he eventually found buffy being the slayer to be emasculating to him--he couldn’t stand that she was stronger than him, and that she didn’t need him in that way, and he went and essentially cheated on her with an entire vampire nest he let feed on him because his fragile masculinity was threatened by his super strong girlfriend and i just. every time i see his face i want to punch it. a lot. repeatedly.

oh, did i mention the ultimatum he gave her? ‘if you don’t want me to leave then come and make me stay, otherwise i’m gone’, and it really had shades of duncan/veronica in that the relationship ended from factors outside buffy’s control (because she got to the helicopter moments too late), rather than her realizing that she was better off and telling him to just get lost. and actually, the more i think about it, the more i realize that duncan/veronica is a whole lot like riley/buffy, right down to duncan not being able to handle that veronica wasn’t this Nice Normal Girl who needed him and making her feel like shit about it lmfao.

anyway, yeah. honorable mentions go to such hits as whitney/lana (smallville), stefan/elena (tvd), duncan/veronica and piz/veronica (veronica mars), and swan queen (ouat and thankfully never canon) in terms of ships that still actively piss me off if i see anything related to them.
