Hey guys!!! I’m working on a zine about Copia’s ghouls and wanted to share what I’ve done so far. It’ll eventually be available to download and print once I’m done!

Each ghoul/ghoulette will get their own page with a collage and a quick summary of their personality and history in the band. I’m on the fence on whether I want to include the performers’ names/other projects but I’m leaning no. Let me know what you think!

Here we have Mortzengersturm, The Mad Manticore of the Prismatic Peak, an adventure for D&D 5E set in the Land of Azurth. That’s writer Trey Causey’s homegrown campaign setting. I love it and I hope to see more of it in the coming years.

This is the first DIY book for 5E that has actually got me excited. Most of the official material from Wizards of the Coast seems deadly dull to me, and the fan publications I’ve come across err on the side of imitation (which is a contrast to previous editions, where all sorts of crazy stuff was floating around the zine scene).  Mortzengersturm is bright and cartoony and fun and whimsical, basically everything 5E Official is not. Jeff Call’s retro art – it immediately reminded me of Rankin Bass – does a lot to set this book apart.

The adventure is sort of a riff on White Plume Mountain. The titular manticore is actually a powerful polymorphed wizard and the Peak houses his treasures and his menagerie of improbable creatures, where the players have to steal the Whim-Wham Stone. The tone is one of sly, slightly dangerous humor (while lighthearted, death is still a very real possibility). It reminds me a bit of Paranoia, actually. Highlight: the map of the dungeon is presented like an old school board game like Candyland.

This one is pure delight. I can even almost forgive the wings on the manticore. Almost. Pick it up if you want to play 5E but different.

Wham Bam Thank You Sam #1 story reviews:

The Calavicci Seal of Approval: When Sam met Al for the first time at MIT and rescues him from being homeless in the library. Lovely, filthy, a great way to open the zine. 

Unforgettable: Sam gets tortured and kills himself, and Al gets tortured too. Far, far too heavy, especially with the suicide (which can drag down any story).

Forgotten Memories: This was okay. It’s a poem from Sam’s perspective, but it’s more fact than emotion.

There’s No Place Like Home: Short piece. It’s more like a slash overlay on the series than an actual story, but the ending makes up for it.

Memory: I didn’t like this one. Sam leaps into this guy, tries to stop a burglary, but it goes badly for the leapee. Then he comes home and ends up with Donna, leaving Al pining away for him after a short reunion.

I Should Have Told You: I don’t like that this poem is set apart from Forgotten Memories in the zine, since I think they work better side-by-side. They’re basically mirror images- Sam and Al telling their side of the story.

Killing Me Softly: Sam leaps into a hooker, has phone sex with past!Al, and then they convince past!Sam to get together with Al in a weird phone sex three-way. Another great one.

To Have Loved and Lost: Sam is dead and everyone deals with it. Thanks, I hate it.

Pillow Fight: Sam and Al have a pillow fight. Really, really cute piece of smut. 

Together as One: Sam gradually discovers he’s with Al. Other than the out-of-nowhere twist of Donna ending up with Tom, I really liked this one.

Can’t Cry Hard Enough: I forgot I also read this on QLSA, so it was a huge treat to read it again. Alternate reality where Sam ends up in a mental hospital with Al as his doctor, but I wish they’d expanded a bit on what Sam’s military role was.

I don’t know why I always assume that everyone will just automatically know when I run things like this, but yes, that would be something I should probably actually tell people. so, hi! My main blog is @stupidlullabies, although I pretty much just use it to keep an eye on things like zines and art challenges. My art blog is @poorlyformed, which has been much more active lately. I’ve also run @adoribullmb and @wham-splat-porn, so while this is my first zine, I’m familiar with wrangling creative types.

PHREDDIE (on the far right), along with journalist, Imperial Dog, and “This Ain’t The Summer of Love” songwriter DON WALLER (2nd from left), co- published, wrote, and edited the groundbreaking and influential los angeles proto-punk zine/bible BACK DOOR MAN.
