Wet Felting

In a nutshell, wet felting is the process of combining layers of wool roving into one flat piece of felt fabric. This is what folks think about as the traditional or oldest felting method.

As with each technique we cover this semester, you are expected to document your research into the wet felting process onto your fiber research blogs to receive credit for this knowledge building that you are doing. Post images of your wet felting samples onto your blogs to be graded as part of the next blog check.

I needlefelted for two days straight and something broke (other than the needle). I used to imagine blades stabbing through flesh with rubbery resistance, like when I deboned a pork shoulder with my own two hands (but had to get a second, stronger set of hands to remove the skin, which deflected all my strikes).

Now every time I picture knife-related violence, it's like I'm jabbing wool into wool with ease. Motorcycle accidents have turned into carding processes. Lathe casualties? More like wetfelting. I am no longer confident in the strength of my skin, fearing that it may be as penetrable as the fibers I fused this weekend. My trusty thought-engines of viscera are clogged with FLEECE.

The construction method I’m choosing to use in the doodlebugz means cutting the wings out of the wet-felted work in such a way as to leave a strip to cover the body and length of the tail. I really prefer my bugz to have longer tails, like dragonflies, both for stability and aesthetics. You can kind of see the wire wing supports between the main wings and the organza secondary wings; I need to get better at creating a more visually stimulating back on the wings, but it’s coming along nicely.
