Making of the fluffy bee legs!! 🐝

I use beeswax to make the ends of the bee legs more defined. I prefer the wax blend from @sarafinafiberart in the USA. But locally in Canada, I also have beeswax from @macinnis_honey_co, I like to mix it with the other wax blend.

I also add black pigment into the wax warmer to help it blend into the black pipe cleaners. I like buying black pipe cleaners in bulk from @amazon

I have also used sharpie or black paint after the wax has dried when I didn't have pigment.

I love the effect of this technique. Wax warmers I get from @dollartree and I have a different one for plain wax and then one for each color of pigment.

The construction method I’m choosing to use in the doodlebugz means cutting the wings out of the wet-felted work in such a way as to leave a strip to cover the body and length of the tail. I really prefer my bugz to have longer tails, like dragonflies, both for stability and aesthetics. You can kind of see the wire wing supports between the main wings and the organza secondary wings; I need to get better at creating a more visually stimulating back on the wings, but it’s coming along nicely. When the Groot build was still in the planning stage, I said to myself, “oh my gosh wool noodles will make this great and perfect bark texture” and did not even think for one dang second HOW FRICKING LONG it was going to take to make a metric buttload of woodles... then make another one because the first batch wasn’t a) nearly enough, and b) thickness- and color-variegated enough. MEOW means I love you in Sea Snail, right? Folks, I can safely say that Gary is my favorite snail ever and I’m super-proud of him. He was a tough snail to shell! There’s some complicated wire armature to support his eyestalks that took me a minute to figure out, but once I did it worked brilliantly. Have you missed me? That’s nice of you. I’ve missed you a lot too. Putting it mildly, this global pandemic plus civil unrest has been pretty tough on me, and probably for you as well. There’s a such a lot we could talk about, but how about we start off on a light foot? Since my life/employment in the music industry has been and still is on pause for the foreseeable future, I figured I may as well try something new and teach myself a new craft. [By the way, I spent three months being massively depressed first, and still am pretty low. But it’s a little better every day.] It was a reasonably successful beginning once I got moving, though: everyone say hi to my first felt sculptures, Statler and Waldorf! These two took me about two days altogether; the kit I purchased (from Sarafina Fiber Arts) was quite good, and the accompanying video tutorial was excellent. While I didn’t set out to make Muppets-reinterpreted-as-goldfish, the first one I made ended up looking so much like Waldorf that I deliberately made the second one to be taller and skinnier and Statler-sequel so he would never be without his best friend.
