Have I mentioned I’m learning a new felting technique? This is my first foray into wet felting, a technique that utilizes soapy water, (a LOT of) abrasion/agitation by hand, and thermal manipulation to interlock wool (and sometimes other) fibers together into a mat. The construction method I’m choosing to use in the doodlebugz means cutting the wings out of the wet-felted work in such a way as to leave a strip to cover the body and length of the tail. I really prefer my bugz to have longer tails, like dragonflies, both for stability and aesthetics. You can kind of see the wire wing supports between the main wings and the organza secondary wings; I need to get better at creating a more visually stimulating back on the wings, but it’s coming along nicely.
