Hey, sorry, weird question, but what happened with Reddit and Westworld? Did the creators of Westworld change something about the show's future storylines because a redditer guessed what was going to happen?
So Westworld had a gigantic audience of 12 million, and it's surprising because this was HBO's attempt for a new tentpole franchise when Game of Thrones was going downhill.
A subreddit spawned, I was in it as a viewer capacity and there was a lot of speculation. Star Ward level of speculation. Which is good , if your show is good, you want them engaged.
So a bunch of redditors had guessed ( Spoilers) that Ed Harris was playing the Current version of Man in Black, and Jimmy Simpson was the younger version of Man in Black , William. That they were the same character.
And that's because the first season was actually beautifully crafted. Including one scene where Younger William enters the park for the first time, and debated choosing a Black or White cowboy hat. This is a simple storytelling device, character is nice, naive, believes in the good in the world, circumstances makes him lose that humanity. Then it made sense for William to be MIB, wearing the black cowboy hat. But until you saw the entire series it could be brushed off. But once you saw it, it made so much sense.
This is during the height of GOT, Star Wars when speculation and the need for twists and turns were paramount. Felt like you needed to outsmart the viewers if you want to be a good showrunner.
During that time, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have an interview to an audience, which they said things in a joking manner. But in the age of digital social media, things go fast. Especially if it's only a text blurb and people didn't see the actual clip
Turns out to be a tongue in cheek joke. But the damage was done and it spread everywhere.
They also decided to do a prank to reveal the all the spoilers of season 2, turns out they made a rickroll video to Redditors as a light-hearted joke.
With that said, season 2 started but there was a lot of thing that seemed off in the show, it started to get even more conveluted.
Multiple spanning timelines. The show also started to get more and more philosophical. Because the show is about Robots ( Hosts) , you never know if a character is a robot as well. So that could feel like a cheap gimmick.
Also it's not only focused on Westworld anymore, it spanned outside to the real world , making a show called Westworld...not Westworld ( even though the Old Westworld movie had multiple theme park sections as well)
I also worked in Marketing, I also want to take the hunch, that General Audience ( Not the hardcore Human Philosopher/ai/spirit/High Art viewer ) wanted to just watch Robots vs Humans and the drama surrounding that, not get too deep in the human subconscious.
But the showrunners made it felt they added twists and turns so much, maybe to outsmart said Redditors? ( As I said, joke or not right?) That the general audience started to be confused and lost interest
The show then went from season 1 with a staggering of 12 million viewers, to season 4 measly few million. And this is HBO rolling the red carpet for Nolan and Joy.
I feel, if you're a showrunner, you need to be careful because anything you say will be dissected and spread like wildfire, and sometimes written articles don't convey tone, especially if it's a joke, that click bait newest and even well known journals can run with. This you can clearly see if you are part of the Marvel fandom.
All of this is sad because Westworld season 1 was so beautifully crafted and written. But because of all of this, as a viewer, you're left wondering if Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy were genuinely trying to craft a twist because the story needed it, or done it for the shock and confuse viewers even more.
Nerdwriter went more in details on it's fall.
This is why I am a bit worried about the TV Fallout Series because they are the executive producers and also Nolan directed some episodes.
This is also why there is so many similar vibes to Westworld, especially MIB to The Ghoul, Dolores Abernathy to Lucy Maclean and so on as I posted on my Tumblr
Both Fallout and Westworld had the gaming aspect where your character could choose to be good, mid , or evil. As Westworld, humans can go in to just explore an enchanting Western theme park, but some are deviants and they go there to unleash their deepest desires.
The only hope I have is that Fall Out is a franchise, they have rules and lore.
Then again Star Wars had rules and lore but they retconned and brought back dead characters just for reusing legacy characters to make more money...
So yeah just my two cents 🥴

Okay maybe not all is lost... so I was really ambivalent about Lucy/Ghoul for numerous reasons you can lay out better than me, but like I mentioned one of them was that there's a ship very much like it in a previous Jonathan Nolan show where I assumed if they went in any direction it would merely be to represent a flirtation with evil for the female protagonist. This ship was explicitly romantic and then descended into erotic antagonism.
Except the Man in Black is a black hatted cowboy (bad!! mean!!) and the Ghoul is a white hatted cowboy (good boy. Good), so it's an inversion. MiB/Dolores begins as a gentle romance which devolves into lovers-to-enemies, and Lucy/Ghoul begins as enemies.
There's an explicit parallel between a MiB/Dolores scene and Lucy/Ghoul scene... when the MiB has returned to Dolores and expects her to remember him (she can't because she's programmed to forget, which drives him into tragedy and heartbreak).
If we have another Reverse Anidala situation on our hands I think I'll just call it quits. I can't trust like that again, I can't.
My only Westworld knowledge is the original film with Yul Brynner and a plan to eventually watch the seasons of the show that have Anthony Hopkins in them. But I have seen people who've watched both debating the comparison and saying it totally seems like a Reverse Anidala situation so....... we're in danger lol.
So funny, yesterday before I got this I went back and added a line to my last post about the hat. Genuinely, him still wearing a white hat, but it's just dirty, is something I'd put a ton of stock in if the show is as committed to the bit as everyone says. Like, that is a great sign for his character.
Not having watched it, obviously I'm talking out of my ass to some extent, but from everything I've seen and read, I don't think there's any chance of it as a 'flirtation with evil' kind of thing. I don't think that's what he represents or how he's framed at all. He's not a temptation, he's a cautionary tale. At worst he's a tragic character who will never regain the hope which the world beat out of him, at best he'll show the resilience and perseverance of love and compassion through the darkest adversity.
My bet is on either nothing mutually emotionally intimate happens between them (boring, unlikely) or the connection is positive and depicted as at least potentially healing, even if they don't make it there and his ending is still tragic. She's going to shake him up regardless, because that's just the inevitable storytelling result of this setup unless their thesis statement is 'it's stupid to try'. Which I don't think it is. It's certainly not the thesis of the games.

Your comments in the tags on that Fallout gifset have me chuckling, because Jonathan Nolan who did Westworld was involved with Fallout, so the parallels between Dolores and MIB may very well be because of that 😂
!!!!!!!!! Say less bestie! BRB gonna binge fallout now thanks!

So that part of Westworld where human William can't help but laugh at robot William struggling with existential problems, tells robot William there is no helping it because civilisation sucks so screw it and then asks him whether he knows what needs to be done because robot William is him so he should go and fucking do it and robot William smiles eureka you're right I'll fucking do it is the most charming self-indulgent world destroyer scenario ever
I too wouldn't need to go on if there was other version of me ready to fucking do it.

I hate William but I adored the twist that he was actually being tested for fidelity all this time, he was in some kinda game after all,and his mind was deteriorating but in not in the way most of the fandom thought.I do hope it's the last I'll see of that old creepy cunt but his twist gave me fucking shivers and the final close up of Ed Harris' face?poetic cinema

Watching "Westworld" Season 1 for the first time b like...
Episode 2: Oh hey! It's Liam McPoyle!
Episode 3: Wait, are they trying to make him the romantic lead? Isn't that actor a little too creepy to be the romantic lead?
Episode 7: ... Ok damn it that was pretty fucking hot. He's hot. Can't help but relate to someone who this easily falls in love with fictional characters.
Episode 10: OH SHITTTT!!!!! HOW DID I NOT SEE THAT ONE COMING???? ... Is it wrong that I like this character even more now because of this? I have daddy issues sorry not sorry.
MIB is basically the Flowey of this world and it just works.

I am going to re-watch episodes 1-4 of this season, probably, to see what else I can pick up on. But once again, I am paying close attention to costuming decisions. There is information being conveyed here.
Note who is dressed in black and white, and when. These are being used as indicators of Hale’s dominion, influence, or attempts at control (Hale is always dressed in black or white). Costuming that is in color, as with Clementine, or with Christina, indicates something external to her, or in conflict with her. When we see Christina wearing color, we might suspect that a part of Dolores – wherever she may be – is struggling to surface. Notice how Maya is dressed when accompanying her, when trying to steer her decisions one way or the other.
I do not think Maya is “good people.” I think Maya is a minder, a mother – there are both phonetic and semantic connotations to the name – as the name Christina has etymologic parallels to child. There is also Peter Myers (as in Peter Abernathy, as in pater; Myers, as in a masculine counterpart to Maya, as in mayor). We know Westworld is big on parent/child themes and the question of “programming” invoked therein, both sacrificial love and intrinsic tension, succession and separation. What it means not just to deviate, but to individuate, even speciate.
What is the significance of Christina's date in 4x01, and of Teddy, both dressed in gray? I’m still trying to parse that out. If black and white represent Hale’s conflation of harmony and binarism, Black and White, Humans and Hosts, then perhaps gray is indicative of a test of some kind, tempting Christina with the illusion of an alternate choice, breaking free of the either/or. Perhaps Teddy is a covert operative (and if so, on whose behalf?), a wrench in the gears, trying to sneak in under the cover of Christina’s own simulation enclosure-slash-fidelity test.
In last Sunday’s episode, Maeve makes a comment to Hale to the effect of, “And here I thought Wyatt was Dolores’s bad side.” That’s a hugely loaded line, intended to remind the audience that Hale 2.0 is (or, perhaps, was) the synthesis of two discrete personalities: Dolores Abernathy and Charlotte Hale. She even tells Dolores in S3: “Why give us these feelings” if all they’ll be is a liability?
All of which is why I have a hunch that Christina is a part of Hale 2.0 – the Dolores part – that has been jettisoned, partitioned off and imprisoned, so as not to interfere with Hale’s execution of her master plan.
So then why keep Christina around, stuck in a loop? Who knows. Maybe Hale’s just vindictive. Maybe Dolores, being the park’s OG host, contains valuable data that Hale doesn’t want to risk disposing of – an insurance policy of sorts, or a backup template. Wouldn’t it be funny if she winds up being the proverbial fly in the ointment, coming back – resurrecting – to bite Hale in the ass?
More costuming details: you see a lot of cut-out panels in Christina’s clothing, implying a missing or segmented piece. Her earrings are broken in two. There are also abundant straps, belts, or textile details that suggest leashing, binding. You see some of it echoed in Host MIB’s outfits, as well.
