Might be on the nose, but Albert Mason and his talk of purgatory realllly gets me thinking about the actual surreal potential of this world really being a state of purgatory.

Albert is toiling with the very meaning of his creative vision, Arthur is facing and fighting his morality, and the Gang as a whole are all dealing with the demons and/or consequences of their pasts - and how they wish to attone going forward (wherever forward leads, usually to poetic tragedy in this universe).

Combining this with the omnipotent honour-system, and all the scenarios designed to directly test that, it really crafts an ethereal atmosphere at times - like something really is just behind the veil, peering at your actions.
