I had the very good fortune yesterday to add drummer extraordinaire Chris Frantz’s autograph to my vintage Japanese pressing of Talking Heads’ “Stop Making Sense” soundtrack, as well as a fave 12” remix by his other band, Tom Tom Club. He appeared at the Westport Library in Connecticut as part of its inaugural VersoFest, discussing his autobiography, Remain In Love, from a year or two back. It‘s a fun book, which I actually read and reviewed for my magazine last year—a generally upbeat and surprisingly fond recollection of the Heads’ heyday. As for the library, I was very impressed with the preparation and effort that went into the event; between having presented at hundreds of libraries and being married to a library director, I have a pretty good idea of what that must have entailed, and it appeared to come off without a hitch.

“The Fairfield Scribes worked with the Library’s WestportWRITES program to release an anthology of short stories written by authors local to Fairfield County, Connecticut. These pieces are in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s classic novel. The original challenge to the authors for this collection was to follow in Shelley’s legendary footsteps, when Lord Byron told his guests in the summer of 1816 to “each write a ghost story.”

Authors include Edward Ahern, Elizabeth Chatsworth, Gabi Coatsworth, Cody Daigle-Orians, Dave D’Alessio, Alex Giannini, Roman Godzich, Sheryl Kayne, P.C. Keeler, Alison McBain, V.P. Morris, Marc Sirkin, Corrine “Mitzy Sky” Taylor, and D.J. Whitney. The stories range in theme from literary reimaginings of Mary Shelley’s life, to a horror story about a woman transforming herself into a termite queen, and everything else in between.

Lego Librarian wasn’t sure if she qualified for a a Timberland Library, but she does! The system includes five counties: Grays Harbor, Thurston, Mason, Pacifc and Lewis. #legolibrarian received her library card at the welcoming #westportlibrary She also picked up a craft project and a tote bag. TONIGHT on ME-TV @ 12:35am EST, one of the GREATEST episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE: “THE DUMMY" (written by Rod Serling, based on an unpublished story by Lee Polk, directed by Abner Biberman, originally broadcast May 4, 1962) Dummies, doppelgangers, duplicates—The Twilight Zone was rife with them. The concept of characters coming alive is taken to an ironic, horrific extreme in Serling’s “The Dummy," unarguably the archetypal version of every ventriloquist’s nightmare, easily besting the films that bookend it, Dead of Night (1945) and Magic (1978), as well as television's Alfred Hitchcock Presents’ “The Glass Eye” (1957). Though great actor Cliff Robertson delivers a star turn as the ventriloquist Jerry Etherson, it is his giddy, grating voice—and cackling laugh—for the dummy, Willie, that perfectly rides that Twilight Zone line between comedy and horror. At the climax of the episode, when a defeated and bewildered Etherson pleads to Willie, "How can you be real when you're made of wood?," the dummy responds with this chilling soliloquy: "You made me real...you poured words into my head...you moved my mouth...you stuck out my tongue. You jerk! Don't you get it? You made me what I am today!
