Sapete, parte delle cose che sto raccontando di questo viaggio sono pensieri che mi erano nati lungo il sentiero, ma una parte consistente di questo racconto è costituita da riflessioni che ho potuto fare in modo compiuto solo a viaggio concluso. Tuttavia non sto idealizzando nulla. Il fatto è che quando stai faticando e sei "in gioco", ti accorgi che più ti allontani dalle persone più sei costretto a fare affidamento sulle tue sole forze. È una bella sfida, che offre molte soddisfazioni, ma penso di non essere l'unico a considerare questi vantaggi solo una volta giunto a casa e steso comodamente sulla poltrona. Perché, a meno di non essere masochisti, nessuno trova davvero piacere negli insetti sulla faccia e tra i capelli, nel non potersi né lavare né cambiare fino al centro abitato successivo, nel dover sopportare di buon grado il calore che si genera sotto l'impermeabile che traspira appena, nelle vesciche ai piedi e in muscoli del corpo di cui scopri l'esistenza solo quando per la prima volta in vita tua iniziano a farti male. Eppure rifarei tutto. Perché è naturale per l'essere umano camminare, sudare, essere punto, farsi male cadendo, assaporare la pioggia aprendo la bocca al cielo, toccare le foglie degli alberi e la punta dei fili d'erba sul bordo della strada. The Pull of the Trail

My feet ache. They feel swollen and tender, hot. In the last two days I’ve walked twenty-six miles and, right now, I feel every inch of that.

I’ve left my boots in my room, swapped for flip-flops. In the loose footwear I feel unsteady and awkward, as though the boots have melded with my body so that now, without them, I’ve forgotten how to walk.

Limping, I cross the grass to the water’s edge. It is lapping gently against the stones on the beach. Out on the loch a speed boat zips along towing a shrieking skier. I wish they weren’t there, shattering what would otherwise be a peaceful evening. But, also, I am happy to see human life on the loch. Since lunchtime I’ve walked its eastern shore and saw no boat traffic at all. This loch used to be teaming with life. By boat was, after all, the best mode of transport and travel for centuries. Now the rowboats and steamships are gone. Locals and tourists alike zip along the loch’s western shore on the two-lane A82, casting only occasional glances at the water and mountains surrounding it (I know, I’ve driven on that terrifyingly curvy and narrow highway).

I spy a flat rock in the water and kick of my flip-flops to ease my aching feet onto its slimy surface. It is cold. Shockingly cold. But heavenly. I wish for a larger rock, or even a folding chair, so that I could sit with my feet soaking, healing in the cold. But there isn’t one, so I remain standing, easing my weight from one foot to the other.

The air is warm on my skin. The sun is only now reaching the mountaintops across the loch. These long summer days mean I won’t be awake to see full darkness.

Ball-shaped orange buoys bob nearby, drawing my attention, but my gaze is pulled even further afield to the north and the mountains in the distance. I’ll be walking to those mountains in the coming days. Like countless others who have stood exactly where I am now, I wonder what I will experience on my journey, who I will meet, what I will see. My stomach flips with excitement. If I had my boots on, I’d be tempted to get back on the trail right now.

Mountains, Lakes and Fish´n´Chips

Hiking the West Highland Way in Scotland

The Scottish highlands do have a place on many travelers bucket-list - be it hikers, mountain bikers or motorcyclists. They are well known for their mystic landscapes, ever-changing weather and sometimes dramatic history. We chose to hike the West Highland Way as our introduction to this part of the world.

This trail covers 154km from Glasgow to Fort William and passes through some of the most spectacular parts of the Highlands as for example Glencoe and ends at the foot of Ben Nevis - the hightest mountain on the British isles. We did the hike in seven days and walked up to the summit of Ben Nevis (1.345m above sea level) on the day after.

The trail can be divided into parts: The first from Glasgow to Loch Lomond which brings you from the farms of the lowlands into woods and via the summit of Conic Hill to the shore of the lake. The second part follows the shore of the lake and is the most difficult as you have to climb over large rocks and through muddy bogs the whole way. The third part covers the “proper” Highlands with Glencoe and Devils Staircase. This part does have more elevation change but it is less tricky than the second in my opinion.

The trail does connect small towns and village so that we decided to use hotels and hostels for accommodation. You are allowed to camp most of the time but we hiked in April 2017 and did have to deal with a bit of rain and cold weather (including snow). Not the cheapest way to travel but comfy and it keeps the back weight down.

For me the highlight of the trip was the third part of the trail and the subsequent hike up Ben Nevis. The landscape is full “Braveheart” and the low hanging clouds in the mornings give it a mystic quality. Besides that digging into huge portions of Fish and Chips was also pretty great.

Come mi disse una signora in centro a Milngavie, in Scozia si possono sperimentare tutte e quattro le stagioni in un giorno. Che - curiosamente - era la stessa cosa che avevo letto in una guida in italiano. Non si può dire però che gli scozzesi siano succubi dei loro stessi stereotipi. Non in fatto di meteo, perlomeno. Perché se già a Glasgow ero incerto sul tenere o meno la giacca, lungo la WHW la situazione si fece ancora più incerta. Quando montai la primissima tenda, per esempio, dovetti farlo sotto una leggera pioggia, quasi rinfrescante dopo una giornata di sole. Quello fu un momento decisivo: innanzitutto non avevo mai montato all'aperto la tenda che avevo portato, in quanto nuova. Ma questo fu facile. Il mio pensiero, già prima della partenza per il Regno Unito, era che non avevo mai dormito da solo in una tenda, in mezzo a un bosco, nonostante fossi stato abituato al campeggio fin da bambino. Mi ero fatto mille pensieri sulle possibili paure: i rumori del bosco, gli animali più o meno pericolosi, l'imprevedibilità delle persone stesse, il buio totale non offuscato dalle luci artificiali, ma semmai addolcito dalla luna e dalle stelle. E allora un po' mi calmai. Montata la tenda, cominciò a piovere per davvero. Entrai come per necessità. Ero piuttosto stanco; mangiai di gusto e mi addormentai senza pensieri per la testa. Durante la notte mi svegliai ripetutamente, nel buio totale, mentre la pioggia imperversava. E non sentivo un solo rumore intorno a me, se non la pioggia stessa e il lamento di qualche albero spinto dal vento. Quegli stessi alberi che in parte mi stavano riparando dall'acqua, dal fresco e dallo sguardo curioso della notte. E non ebbi paura per un solo istante.
