I've been thinking about Komaeda headcanons and I was wondering if you have any that aren't particularly based in canon? Nothing that contradicts canon, just something that can't be proven nor denied. I find those are usually the most interesting headcanons.
For example I think Komaeda as being fluent in a few languages besides Japanese. Very little to support this as being canon but the chance is never 0, lol.
Hi!! Sorry for taking so long to reply :'D
Honestly I'm still blanking on a lot of things, but some of the stuff that comes to mind right now:
I feel like he'd have looked into a lot of religions and other occult things to try to work out what the hell is going on with his luck. There's no way he wouldn't really want to know and being in his shoes would probably affect your relationship with spirituality in interesting ways since it's... a pretty obviously real supernatural phenomenon, and not a mild one either. We already see him being a bit superstitious in Island Mode and I'd love to see more fanworks exploring that.
I feel like his living spaces, on top of being meticulously clean because he's a neat freak, would be designed to be calming for him and be as luckproofed as possible. Nothing really heavy/shatterable in high places, minimal trip hazards, etc etc etc. If/when Hinata starts living with him the latter would learn pretty quickly not to leave stuff lying around on the floor; I could see Komaeda being pissy about that.
A cat would be a better fit for Komaeda than a dog postgame, they'd fit his lifestyle and energy level much better, fight me.
Just because it would be funny, he likes sakuramochi and hates kusamochi. He and Hinata have had long debates about this.
We already talked about the language HC in dms but yeah, I love that too! At minimum he'd be relatively proficient in english, I think.
He'd like chess almost or just as much as he does go because it has the same colour scheme. I think he'd be really good at it and end up regularly having long games with Sonia (who I could see being tutored in it growing up) that noone else in the class can follow. (Edit: Until Hinata wakes up as the ultimate grandmaster post-NWP and wipes the floor with both of them. I think I've read a fic with scenes where he played chess with Komaeda but I can't remember which.)

the fact that people still use the "no one would talk to a friend that way" "no one would grieve for someone like that if it was just platonic" etc arguments to prove a ship is canon is so annoying to me. yes i get it, we got queerbaited hard but where does it say that romance has to be higher than a friendship or no one said friends couldn't also be lovers or vice versa....? i normally say "popular media tropes that usually are for romance" when i talk about fiction but pulling a blanket statement like "NO ONE talks to a friend that way" is so invalidating to so much of our queer experiences. the beauty of queer friendship literally lies in the emotional fulfilment we get from our friends in a way that i don't normally see in cishet friendships for whatever reasons. so idk it's just been bothering me to see these kinds of posts every now and then. "you wouldn't do [x] for your friends" i would actually. i would sell my soul for them. i would kill for them and kill myself for them. i would do anything for my friends that i would do for a partner. the "proof" for a ship doesn't have to be by invalidating their friendship. also like aren't most of the ships so powerful when they're also each other's closest friends? do y'all not think of your partners as your best friends?

Every time I read "hindutva" referred to as this evil idea of forcing "Hindu practices" or even particularly "upper caste/Brahmin" ideas on people, an urge to bash someone's head rises in me.

Fun story I went by L from Death Note in 2015-2018 because when I came to America, I didn't want to explain that my first name is nine characters long and has a sound English speakers are incapable of producing (spoiler alert, my full name is twenty-seven characters long and is phonetically impossible for English speakers). So I went by L. That's it, that's the name.
I later transitioned into male and went by Daniel, which was already very American. Later, in college, I changed it into Daniil, which is what I went by in my native language and was closer to how the name is biblically pronounced, which was important to me as a practicing Jew.
I detransitioned almost a year ago (I'm accepting suggestions on what to do for my one year!) and got my American citizenship a few days ago (this is my first Independence Day as an American, yay!), and my American documents have my full full name, unamericanised, the same way it was when I was born.
But yea.
Immigrant and a detrans woman. So much for oppression Olympics.

Ai art is the bane of searching for resources and references surrounding clothing.
Pov you're me trying to research fashion history and get hit with the "Pomfortable Derigte"
Tumblr media
Like I feel like ai art should at least have some sort of automatic watermark or smth especially on shit like this that is supposed to be 'educational'

Man, just thinking of the dynamic between Kiku and Yao, the politics of men’s haircuts from the Opium Wars onwards, and how two nations who have known each other for so long see things. When Kiku first cuts his hair short in the western style upon the dawn of the Meiji-era, it’s naturally a tad strange and unnerving. But it’s a transition he’s able to make, especially because the western world is simultaneously unfamiliar but also familiar through his longtime relationship with the Netherlands and rangaku (Dutch studies). Short hair marks him as severing his ties with the old Sinocentric order, and what feels incredibly alienating eventually symbolises power, adaptability and recognition, in the aftermath of his victory in the first Sino-Japanese war.
But of course, it is the opposite for Yao. It symbolises defeat, it is the admission of failure, that he is well and truly no longer the standard bearer of civilisational prestige. I think one moment where it really sinks in for Kiku that the old order is truly upside down isn’t just the moment he wins—but seeing Yao himself later at the peace conference, tense and weary, but now with his own hair neatly cropped short, in drab western clothes so different from the more colourful silk garb of a Qing official—as the ink dries on the Treaty of Shimonoseki. A mourner at his own funeral, a pale shadow of the forceful, proud and towering empire whose presence used to fill the room effortlessly, in whose shadow Kiku used to walk.

extremely niche ask but i'm not sure who else to ask - do you have any posts/opinions etc on italicizing non-english words? i swear i remember a flurry of discourse in mdzs/cql spaces about it but i have no idea where to start searching unfortunately as i came to the fandom later. there's was some discussion about orientalism and othering etc. just wondering and hoping if you could point me towards some readings or had opinions etc. thank you!
i unfortunately cannot point you towards any resources (at the moment—i will look for things if you give me time, and you can contact me by dm if you want to), but i think i’ve seen snatches of the discourse. i think most likely the reason for the talk of orientalism and othering probably comes from the way that italicisation assumes that the reader cannot possibly have any understanding of a term, and rather than leave the term unitalicised and force the reader to research itself—which is what most non english first-language speakers are expected to do if they run into an english (or western, more broadly) term that they are unfamiliar with—it gives the reader an easy out, to categorise the term as Other (in this case, Sinitic/generally Eastern) and not have to put in any effort beyond the basic categorisation of it.
in my personal opinion, it’s a delicate balance to strike—in some cases, such as fantrans work that i engage in, italicisation can be a way to render a term or phrase which doesn’t exist in english or western conceptualisation, and explain it further in footnotes, but when it comes to c-ent fandom and english first-language fans there………i’ve always been of the opinion that they (and western fans generally) should be just as responsible for doing their own research, rather than expecting the fandom to cater to their experiences.

Trying to buy yarn in this city is an epic quest. Unless I want to go explore the medina, and I ain't got no time for that, there's one place in the New town that sells wool for knitting that a friend recommended. I went yesterday with her at around 5pm and the place was closed, because this is Morocco and fat chance in hell little independent shops have official and reliable opening hours, my friend tried to call the shop owner but they didn't answer. I'm back today, it's a quarter to 3pm, and the car parking guard told me they'll open at 3. But there ain't no guarantee they'll do tho. So here I am sitting on a bench in front of the shop waiting.
Man I just went some new balls of yarn so I can start a new knitting project, how is that too much to ask.

i do think the domination of indian origin cartoons has severely and negatively affected current kids bcs even the most mainstream american tv shows were a lot a more socially progressive than our lived realities like i distinctively remember being a little kid and my peers clocking the amount of (usually sexist and casteist) restrictions desi parents/society placed on us as weird and oppressive just bcs the kids on hannah montana and zack n cody went on dates, hung out with friends, decided what to wear .. but now all kids are watching chota bheem and internalising the hindu morality that comes with it ,:/

trying to read stuff from russian feminists but they call gays queers and use terms like pinkwashing and mansplain and abuse. hello have you ever thought that. you can't just use words from other languages. like some average russian women will hear you talk in english terms and it will push her away. she will think wtf is mansplaining and ignore you. but if you told her "men love to explain things to women when we don't ask" and she will be like "YESS THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME". why can't you understand that. your focus should be on making woman hear you. why do you keep repeating the same things again and again in your little bubble. you take english terms to describe them for shit like burgers. we don't have burgers, we don't know what else to call them! we do have gays and we should have our own word. and at the very fucking end aren't you just embarrassed that we take every little thing from the west. we're not west we should progress in our own fucking way.
