Western Spadefoot (Spea hammondii)
If it (kinda) looks like a peanut, is the size of a peanut, and smells like a peanut, it must be… a western spadefoot. Western spadefoots really are about peanut-sized, about 1.5 - 2.5 inches long. Plus, they do actually smell like a peanut too. At least to some people. They secrete an irritant from their skin to deter predators that, by some accounts, smells like peanuts. While it may smell tasty, it’s not a good idea to put this peanut-like frog near (or in!) your mouth. To grow peanuts, growers start with raw, uncooked peanuts and bury them in the soil. Western spadefoots bury themselves in the soil too. They use the hardened spade-like appendages on their hind feet to dig themselves into the ground. They stay there for most of the year and emerge for only short times, usually around late fall and into the early spring, and it’s highly dependent on when it rains. These ‘lil peanuts inhabit parts of central and southern California. Photo: © Tony Iwane, CC-BY-NC

The plains spadefoot (Spea bombifrons) is toadally cute. But did you know that this stout amphibian, which inhabits arid regions of western North America, is an “explosive” breeder? After mating, females can lay as many as 2,000 eggs! These eggs might hatch in as few as two days, and the resulting tadpoles can develop rapidly, sometimes maturing in just 13 days. This species reproduces en masse after warm heavy rains. Talk about pets! Talk about Wisconsin and Arizona and their pets!
Wisconsin:
I feel like Wisconsin would have a coyote named Colby or Swiss
A big and lazy raccoon named Cheddar
and a American Water Spaniel named Jack (after Colby Jack)
He likes to take them all down to the lake just outside his house and fish with them. Jack likes to jump in after the fish, Cheddar will just look around or sleep, and Colby/Swiss runs off into the forest or lays next to him
Arizona:
Definitely has a few reptiles and amphibians. (gov is freaked out by all them)
Two snakes (Western Diamondback Rattlesnake and a Black-necked Garter snake)
An Arizona woodrat
A Arizona myotis
a frog (Relict Leopard Frog)
and a toad (Couch’s Spadefoot toad)
he probably has a bunch of lizards too
(couldn’t think of any names for them)
he has a big room in his house where he keeps them all and takes care of them. sometimes he’ll bring one or two back to the statehouse with him and keep them in his room.
i have this headcanon that dangerous animals won’t attack their state. so thats why a lot of the states have animals that are considered dangerous. other states have to be careful around animals not native to their state

Salt Valley Overlook, Arches National Park (No. 1)
An abundance of wildlife occurs in Arches National Park, including spadefoot toads, antelope squirrels, scrub jays, peregrine falcons, many kinds of sparrows, red foxes, desert bighorn sheep, kangaroo rats, mule deers, cougars, midget faded rattlesnakes, yucca mothes, western rattlesnakes, and collared lizards.
Plants also dominate the landscape in the park, including prickly pear cactus, Indian ricegrass, bunch grasses, cheatgrass, lichen, moss, liverworts, Utah juniper, Mormon tea, blackbrush, cliffrose, four-winged saltbrush, pinyon pine, evening primrose, sand verbena, yucca, and sacred datura.
Biological soil crust consisting of cyanobacteria, lichen, mosses, green algae, and microfungi is found throughout southeastern Utah. The fibrous growths help keep soil particles together, creating a layer that is more resistant to erosion. The living soil layer readily absorbs and stores water, allowing more complex forms of plant life to grow in places with low precipitation levels.

i remember specifically that the toads were eastern spadefoot toads but i just googled “eastern spadefoot toads” and they didn’t look like that. they looked like western spadefoot toads. i didn’t know what an eastern spadefoot toad looked like before i had that dream but they look very different
i remember wanting to adopt one bc there were two of them and they were being kept in such a tiny box it didn’t even count as an enclosure like they barely had space to move at all and i felt bad for them. but then i saw that they were $800 each. whoever was running that store was legit evil
i had a dream about a really scary grocery store that also sold a bunch of random things other than groceries like CDs and live eastern spadefoot toads being sold as pets that cost $800 each (these were the only live animals) and sections of it kept appearing and disappearing at will. i wanted to buy a taylor swift CD and then i went back to the CD section and it was gone. i also broke a vase and went up to an employee like Hey sorry this vase is broken and he was like “did you break it?” and i said “yeah” and he said “ok well you have to buy it and additionally we have a $50 fee for breaking things so you’ll have to pay that too” and this didn’t seem fair to me especially because it felt like i was being punished for taking accountability so i literally just put the vase back and silently left the store but then i couldn’t find not only my car but even the parking lot where i parked it seemed to have disappeared.
