(More) Things I Noticed in UKsies: Fansie Night Edition (Act 2)
First one got too long so here is act 2!!
At Jacobi's Albert says 'why do old people talk?' Directly to Jacobi who waves him off
'Jack don't run from no fight!' '*in the highest, squeakiest voice imaginable to mock Les* Take it down short stop!!'
Katherine dances on the tables with the boys in KoNY and I'm not sure if Bronté does but Bobbie does the nerve tap!
Cup song time
Katherine and Les have such cute little interactions
Nyoom tables!!
They don't shy away from showing what they do to keep themselves safe, when the newsies grab the lamps, you can see them clip themselves on but it only serves to make you go 'something is about to go down!!'
The newsies on the ground dance around the tables and tap metal plates to the table newsies' feet
Ascension with frantic spinning, incredible
In a bit of a stark contrast, letter from the refuge is a really poignant moment
Crutchie breaks the forth wall and speaks directly to the audience, including them in his thought process
A cop watches the whole thing from the scaffolding
Crutchie is left handed
Crutchie actually starts crying at 'I'll be fine' and hearing that emotion in his voice contrasted with his trying to be optimistic - ugh, have I mentioned that I love Matthew Duckett?
Crutchie gets up and passes on his letter to Specs before being slowly helped off stage by a refuge newsie, still struggling when the next scene begins. When he got up he winced so hard someone next to me whispered 'ooh that was real'
Jack was Properly Angry in Watch What Happens reprise and his fear for Crutchie shone through
Ryan!Davey may be the king of eye-rolls but Alex!Davey is the king of raising his eyebrows in incredulation, especially to Les
'Lighten up no-one died' is said a lot subtler, like he knows how bad that sounds but doesn't know how to confront it
'HECANTTAWLKHELLCALLYABACK'
The mayor actually shows some sympathy towards the newsies but in the end doesn't act due to Synder and Pulitzer's influence
Fun fact: Jamie Golding (Wiesel/mayor/theatre worker/police/etc) has NINE costume changes during the show, he is so many people
Pulitzer grabs Katherine as she's trying to walk away at 'you can't have mine'
George Crawford (Morris Delancey) has an amazing evil laugh which he uses a lot during the show
As the printing press is being brought out, the Delancey brothers bring Jack behind the scaffolding. Although this can't be seen by most of the audience they continue to intimidate him and get really up in his space
Shout out to Zack Guest super swing who played Oscar!!
Brooklyn newsies met with the Most applause they are so cool
Brooklyn's here is broken up with a little roll call which makes the 'now them soakers' hit harder
Spot has a slight lisp
'If we disband the union..' *outrage* 'this is your union!!'
The newsies all call Jack out in various ways when they see him take the money, Spot has to be physically held back from beating him up
Something to Believe in is a little different, the Jatherine is believable but isn't really focused on much in the show, it almost feels like an afterthought. The line 'what was ours still will be' really resonates, it feels more like they had a little whirlwind mutual attraction but both think it'll end with the strike
Universal 'oooohh!!' From the audience when they kiss
Lighting for once and for all is so pretty, they have lanterns and there's a sort of orange mottled pattern like the reflection of the lamps projected across the entire theatre
Once and For All really lets the vocals shine, it isn't as high energy as the other numbers and the scaffolding doesn't move like it does in livesies, instead a giant newsies banner falls from the ceiling that they parade around the stage. The choreo isn't missed at all, the sheer wall of sound is incredible
The newsies line the theatre as Jack talks to Pulitzer and smack their fists either into their hands of onto the railings in time with the music as they hum
'The boy, Jack Kelly is here :)))'
Spot makes the 'I'm watching you' gesture at Pulitzer
As the other characters leave Jack to talk to Pulitzer, Hannah loudly says 'I love your show!!' To Medda
So many hugs when they win
Crutchie coming in with his little police hat, greeted with the biggest hug from Race and the boys
The reaction to Crutchie calling Roosevelt 'your highness'
Crutchie & Les reunion 🥺
And perfect finale and curtain call!!
The post finale choreo is incredible and was met with applause right up to the final bows
Crutchie is up on the scaffolding for much of the choreo and makes his way down for the bows. He slid down the stair rails in the same way you would slide down a ladder. Then he kept sliding. And kept sliding. And then his leg got caught. And then he kept sliding. Basically, he ended up on the floor tangled in the stairs and had to call a couple of people to help him out of the mess he got into 😅
And that was that! Post-show Q&A was pretty short but really lovely, there were mostly questions about the audition process, advice, favourite bit of the show, etc but it was really sweet how they all cared to stay and so many people did! Plus there were mega shout outs to dance captain Alex Christian who plays Butttons and is a legend!!
Honestly this show means so much to me and to be able to see it with such an enthusiastic cast and audience was incredible, see it if you can because it is in a league of its own.

UM WEST END NEWSIES????
so I saw the Wembley Park Theatre production last night and if u don't wanna be spoiled dni
But if you have no chance of seeing it here are some of the little details <3
First of all the casting was perfect???
Michael Alomka dove into a more sensitive part of Jack - and it was super interesting
Katherine was so much more headstrong and it was suchhhh a new flavour of her - Katherine has never been one of my favourite characters but god she was so strong and wild and unduly it was brilliant.
Ryan Kopel as Davey has to be my standout tho - he seemed much younger in the role than BF did, and much more uncertain and afraid - I loved it - and his development oh my god he became boisterous and ahhhhhhhhh
Docket as Crutchie was brilliant he was much less happy-go-lucky than AKB was and oh it worked - he was frustrated and angry and real.
AND Crutchie played a much larger role in the leadership of the strike here!! Just through little interactions and stuff but it was coooollll and he even seemed to form a friendship with both Kath and Davey
Even the kid playing Les was brilliant and I usually don't like Les all that much - but the kid I saw was brilliant
KATHERINE WORE A CROWN MADE OF SPOONS IN KONY
The Newsies would swing out on lamps and ropes over the audience and oh my godddddddd
THE BROOKLYN NEWSIES WERE GIRLS (and it added balance since earlier they'd been the bowery beauties so it changed them up and showed the power of women plus finally included girls in the strike, sometbing 1992 and bway missed) AND THEY WERE SO GOOD
Jack and Katherine had Beatrice and Benedick vibes from Much Ado - that's the only comparable thing, they were so brilliant and the chemistry was so goooodddd
Ngl it probably didn't have enough Javid content for you addicts.
Butttt there was a hug when Jack tells Davey they won the strike that is so good. Davey can't retain himself, he jumps and hugs Jack and then picks up and whirls around Les
'we are inevitable' was delivered PERFECTLY I can't even explain
There are so many stunts and jumps and tricks and we all knew the dancing was gonna be perfect but dear god it still got me
And finally, my favourite thing, THE SET
I was sitting stage right in Woodside (I think) and if u can get tickets like that it is so worth it. The actors are running up behjind and beside you
There's even a little slide for the escape from snyder
And they utilise the scaffding part of the set super well
There are lamps that lifted up for ariel tricks
And so much more
Even a fuckin zip line!!!!!!!
okay you've nearly made it to the end
There were a fewwww lyric changes buttt the orchestrations were changed quite a lot to make room for more dance and honestly? I think I prefer broadway music wise
THEY ALL STAND UP AND SAY THEIR NAMES IN SEIZE THE DAY <3
The Pulitzer's set was built in newspapers to show class and how the Newsies have built their entire empire etc
And all the set was moved on and off by the Newsies, too, again to show class and how the Newsies (and working kids) run the world, really
Finally
Yes, Race was perfect.
#it was a good day to be bi too#if ur going i recommend getting a programme b4 the show bc I went at the interval and they'd run out#It was so good#I really can't explain it enough#okay anyone who's seen/is seeing it message meeeeeeee with thoughts#newsies#musical theatre#west endsies#newsies london#davey jacobs#jack kelly#musicals#katherine plumber#race higgins#west end#broadway

An interesting thing I picked up on while watching Bronté as Kath was that she seemed to remember things and plan ahead by talking to herself. After the first Jacobi’s scene and before Watch What Happens, she mutters to herself, lightly gesturing as she recalls information and seemingly plans her writing. She then does the same after Watch What Happens (Reprise), muttering and gesturing while caught up in her own bubble, oblivious to the world around her. Her eyes never really focused on the audience either, she was either looking at her notebook or looking up as she tried to remember things. She was clearly distracted too, and very caught off guard when other things on stage, like Bunsen or the newsies, broke her from her own thoughts. She usually stayed around downstage right when doing this too.
#i love brontés kath sm#the way she plays kath fuels my existence#if you cannot tell i am still in mourning and have been writing to escape my emotions#newsies#newsies musical#disneys newsies#newsies uk#musical theatre#london newsies#uksies#west endsies#katherine pulitzer#katherine plumber#bronte barbe

Katherine says goodbye politely, pleasantly, and professionally. The picture of etiquette and grace drilled into her by her father and a couple of witty comments all her own to send you on your way. Etiquette, however, cannot hide emotions and there's often a struggle to hide the tears of a girl who's never quite ready to let go.

Does anyone has some thoughts on how Katherine interacting with the newsies on a regular basis (post strike) would look like? Specifically regarding the obvious economic/educational gap between them. And would like to share them.
We've seen already that she doesn't show any sign of prejudice (in the little screen time she gets in Livesies or West Endsies) by then again she was raised with a sociopath that is Pulitzer that threatened Jack's newsies and the man himself in front of her, treated her like a possession basically and the famous "why throw the shoe away if it's dirty, you can just use a polish" like it's a revolutionary idea (smh so hard, what the fuck)
Obviously she works for the Sun but it's hard to imagine she was living off the payroll from writing the reviews and had no support from her family.
It's obvious that she's shocked to see the conditions at the refuge which was an extreme but then again the lodgings or tenaments were that much better off.
And as to the education I'd imagine he gets full formal education while the newsies in majority would only get few years of basics yet she seems to know her way of writing (obv since she worked at the Sun) but it doesn't seem as if she used a fancy language making Children's Crusade easy to read. We know she makes fun of Jack's way of speaking ("for sure" moment) but she hasn't got her own "auspicious" moment unlike Davey
#loos thoughts#might work on the rephrasing#i was just rewatching livesies and started thinking#newsies#west endsies#broadway#newsies live#newsies london#newsies the musical#newsies uk#newsies broadway#west endies#katherine plumber#katherine pulitzer

(More) Things I Noticed in UKsies: Fansie Night Edition! (Act 1)
I was lucky enough to see newsies again at the fansie night last night and it was incredible!! Here are more little moments that I loved :) This is gonna be long.
The absolute roar from the audience as soon as the lights went down to start the show, fansies are something else, man, this audience was on fire
At the very beginning Race looks so happy reading the paper I can't his smile was so big - Josh Barnett has said that this is his favourite part of the show and it shows!!
Lady behind me tried to buy a paper from one of the newsies but he wouldn't give it to her because she didn't have cents
Matthew Duckett (Crutchie) can do the fingers-in-the-mouth loud whistle thing and uses it a lot during the show, first to call the newsies to work
Not me wondering the entire time how Race's cigar and Morris' cigarette work only to be reminded that e-cigarettes exist
My mum's face after Splasher did a backflip whilst skipping - Ross Dorrington, my God
'Hey! Hey! *spin* Get ya papes!'
The way the newsies just slide around the stage and careen off of it, its an accident waiting to happen but it looks so fun
Santa Fe Prologue, Jack yanks Crutchie away from that railing so fast poor guy he just wants to go down
Crutchie flinches away from Jack and laughs when he suddenly leaps towards him at 'close your eyes'
For like half of carrying the banner these boys are just half naked, you can see their mic packs running up their backs
Crutchie pickpockets Darcy
At some point Crutchie does something to offend Finch and gets whacked with his slingshot
Guy in front of woodside looks so sad the whole of the 'curdled coffee' bit and is contemplating life only to stand up and sing 'all I can catch is fleas'
He then proceeds to flick said fleas at another newsie who runs away and calls him disgusting
Wiesel descends from the ceiling
Alex James Hatton Davey!!
Alex's Davey is more mature than Ryan's, he seems more sure that he's here to do a job and isn't confused or intimidated by the newsies, he genuinely seems like an outsider who isn't in on the joke and is not impressed by their antics
'that's disgusting'
Henry gets on his knees and pretends to be a child in the line to get papes and keeps going 'I'm new too'
Right behind them a distraught Mike carries a limp Jojo who opens his eyes and says 'I'm dead' to Wiesel
Hannah and Bunsen squabble over a notebook in Bottom Line and Nunsio looks ready to commit
(Lindsay Atherton Hannah is amazing she is hilarious)
Alex Davey is very unsure selling papers to the audience he just kinda mumbles and seems a bit hopeless at it while Les just swindles everyone
The relationship between Alex!Davey and Les is very different to Ryan!Davey, Ryan is all over Les and is very affectionate whereas Alex seems to show the other half of large age gap sibling relationships, meaning he clearly cares about Les but also occasionally looks at him like he is the bane of his existence. Relatable.
Spot's actress is also a bowery beauty it's amazing, the bowery beauties also dance behind Medda during her performance and wink at the audience.
Newsie controlling the light for Medda's performance is concentrating Very Hard
Bobbie Chambers Katherine!!!
Bobbie!Katherine is very sarcastic and very uninterested in Jack but when he gives her the drawing makes a 'huh thats pretty good' face
The newsies watching Medda's show pick up the lights at the end of Don't Come A-Knocking and dance in a circle around them, mirroring their dance moves
Josh Denyer (Mush) has his moment to shine in the bit just after don't come a knocking and has a little solo which was heavily applauded, rightly so
When Race 'tells Wiesel (him)self' he literally goes up, closes the money box and just says 'no'
Katherine watches World Will Know from above the Bronx
When Jack writes on the chalk board he shoves Oscar out of the way very harshly several times and he ends up sprawled over some stairs unable to get up
There's a slide
Crutchie joins in with some of the dancing but his face screams 'help me idk how to do this' I love Matthew Duckett
Jack, Les, Davey and Crutchie confer before marching up through a corridor of newsies to the doors of the World. Crutchie stands facing away from the doors when they go in like he's standing guard, when they get thrown out, he falls to the side directly into the arms of another newsie trust fall style.
Despite already being given a borough to go to, Tommy Boy dives face-down under a table to avoid going to Brooklyn, Mush and another newsie (didn't see who 😅) put their bags on their heads
Bobbie!Katherine is a lot more sure of her self which makes it more meaningful when she shows the vulnerability of 'I'm just busting out of the social pages'
Les follows Crutchie at the end of the World Will Know mini-reprise and Crutchie looks sad when Davey calls him to go home, he then calls to Jack who is staying behind to talk to Katherine and says 'for fuck's sake' when he doesn't follow. This was confirmed by the girls in front row Brooklyn who he said it to because they couldn't stop giggling
Crutchie breaks the forth wall a lot
Katherine's hesitation on giving her last name is more played as she doesn't expect to have to provide one
Katherine physically puts distance between herself and Jack when he starts flirting
Watch What Happens is amazing!! Bobbie puts more frustration into it and speaks a lot of the lines, often punctuated by 'ugh'. Fun fact: Watch What Happens was Bobbie's drama school audition song and she has been working on it for actual years, it definitely shows, it was a brilliant delivery.
Davey really shows hesitation before Seize the Day and his voice goes wobbly in all the right places when he calls for Jack to help him out
'Maybe Pulitzer will see it out of his window and feel sorry for us' 'Heh?? *offended Crutchie noises*'
Crutchie is physically restrained from beating up on the scabbers
One of the scabbers is slipped extra money by Wiesel
Seize the Day was incredible as always, all other productions pale in comparison it is seriously next level, mid-song applause and a standing ovation afterwards (which really, really doesn't happen mid-show on the west end)
Splasher's box jumps!! I counted twelve last night. TWELVE.
Military snare in 'behold the brave battalion'
Crutchie stands offstage with Les to watch the Seize the Day dance break and whistles So Loud to cheer them on
And Mush's pirouettes!!!
Crutchie's agonised coughs when he's being arrested jfc Matt is good at that
The fight call for this show is insane, there is so much going on and its all so expertly done, something went a little wrong and Les' rope ascension didn't happen but so much goes on it wasn't missed
Crutchie whistles to signal the arrival of the police
Newspapers fall from the ceiling at the beginning of Santa Fe
Santa Fe was so good, Michael has such a pretty voice even while literally crying and he uses his little postcard a lot throughout, physically leaning over the railing of the tower like he's reaching for the idea of Santa Fe.
Aaaand end of act 1! This is so long so I'll do a part 2 🤣

A little West Endsies rant for the sake of it-
So, I think it's been talked about on here which versions of Newsies are best for the ships you adore, but I just wanna talk about why Jack and Katherine in Newsies London is so. Much. Better. Than it was in the livesies show
First of all, Bronté's Katherine is just so damn good. She was a stronger character in this. I'm a firm believed that Katherine was just not written all that well, her motivations and story don't match up, and the direction Kara Lindsay took the character was different to the way Bronté Barbe took it.
Katherine in this version seemed to (even when annoyed by Jack's flirting in the first few scenes they share) be attracted to him, and the retorts are playful but also have this tension to them - before, Katherine just seemed annoyed by Jack, whereas here, she seems interested by the challenge of him
The scene where Katherine tries to sell her case as the reporter for the strike (before WWH) is always a super interesting one, and this version was so different, I'm almost tempted to make a whole other post for it.. but, as a little summary, its just less sexist, and power is more evenly dispersed in the new version.
Plus (and super importantly) Londons Jackrine has so.much.more.chemistry!! I don't know how to explain it, the characters just seem to click whenever they're on stage together, they have an electricity surrounding them, and you believe in them
While I'm always gonna think Jack and Katherine's 'Something To Believe In' just... doesn't quite make sense for them both, (same with 'ace up your sleeve' but more on that in a sec) in this, they seemed drawn together, pulled towards one another. The staging had them so. Close. As if they couldn't bear to be further away, couldn't bear to break the moment apart
Yeah. Ace up your sleeve bit. It will never make sense to me that Kath was willing to abandon her dreams of being a reporter with her own stake in the world for the sake of a guy she met like less than a week ago. Just don't like that as a piece of writing. So even in this version, I can't say that's my favourite thing.
Buttttt back on the positives, Jack and Katherine were made more believable through body language and small, unscripted moments. The ways they turned to one another. The way that they acted when she found out the newsies won the strike. Even in bows, they were messing around and acting up, not taking one another seriously - agh it was so good
Jack and Katherine seemed less like fated lovers, though. Their scenes were full of snark and flirting, but I wouldn't necessarily say end-it-all love, so STBI was for sure just out of place. I'd have liked to see their version of that cut song 'when I see you again' cause I think that one just would have fit a little better (even if it still contains that sappy quality, it's less serious, somehow, and explains the feelings better)
I loved them <3
#i mean i usually ship javid butttt#this is the best way i've seen jackrine done#seriously it's so good#run dont walk jatherine shippers#okay i'll stop#<3#newsies#musical theatre#jack kelly#katherine plumber#jackrine#west endsies#newsies london#okay i think thats it
