Njideka Akunyili Crosby (1983) is a leading contemporary artist. A typically large-scale painting by her sold for $3 million, just a few months after she had won a MacArthur Foundation “genius” award worth $624,000. Born in Enugu, Nigeria to J. C. Akunyili, a surgeon and university professor, and Dora Akunyili, a pharmacology professor and government administrator. Her mother won the government’s immigration green card lottery, she was able to move to the US and earn her BS in Biology and Studio Art with honors at Swarthmore College. She attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Yale University where she earned a MFA.

She populates her large canvasses with relatives, friends, politicians, and pop culture figures and uses common objects, plants, toys, cookware, snack foods, family photographs, and bottled drinks, to convey a sense of intimacy and both the ordinariness and nobility of every day of life in her native and adoptive countries.

A stint as artist-in-residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem led to her first solo exhibition at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Her studio is in an industrial area south of downtown Los Angeles, She has had exhibitions at Art + Practice and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Her paintings have been exhibited or added to the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University; Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, the Smithsonian National Museum of African Arts, and the National Portrait Gallery in DC. Her work has been featured at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town, Pérez Art Museum in Miami, Florida; the Baltimore Museum of Art; Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, and the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

She had won the prestigious MacArthur Foundation grant, she had received, among others, the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s James Dickey Contemporary Art Prize, the Next Generation prize at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Financial Times Woman of the Year award.

The Forgotten History of Black Chefs - Eater

Therese Nelson, a dear friend and chef, and I are talking in her Harlem apartment. It’s crowded with cookbooks stacked to the ceiling. Therese is a passionate creative and learner, and we share a love of black culinary history. She runs a site and Facebook page that celebrate just that. For Therese, and many chefs of color, the classroom was not the place where they learned about themselves and the culinary past of the African American people.

James Hemings. Currently championed by our fellow friends chef Ashbell McElveen and culinary historian and sommelier Tonya Hopkins through the newly founded James Hemings Foundation, James Hemings is the household name that should have been that never was. “When I was growing up, I remember all these books talking about what Jefferson did for the American table, and he did make contributions, but he outsourced a lot of his learning to the people who worked on his plantations as his cooks.

James Hemings, Edith Fossett, Fanny Hern; they have French training, but then there are these African and Native American ingredients and flavors, and all of it — England, West Africa, and indigenous food — is getting mixed up in their hands. And the thing is, it’s not just them. It’s generations of black cooks like Solomon Northup’s wife — she’s illiterate but she’s conversant in haute cuisine. A lot of fine restaurants have a pedigree of having black chefs, cooks, whatever you want to call them, powering their kitchens. Delmonico’s, Gage and Tollner, North and South, we were there,” says Tonya.

Indeed we were. James Hemings (1765–1801) was a “bright mulatto” from Albemarle County, Virginia, who died at his own hand in Baltimore at the age of thirty-six. He is the brother of Sally Hemings, who will go down in history as the mother of Jefferson’s African American children.

From the same region that would later produce the indomitable Edna Lewis, the author of the Taste of Country Cooking, known as “the South’s Julia Child,” James Hemings saw the birth of the United States and was, without much exaggeration, its most accomplished and educated chef. Accompanying his slaveholder to Paris when he is nineteen, James is officially free the minute he hits French soil during Jefferson’s ambassadorship.

However, his whole world is atop the mountain known as Monticello, including his mother and siblings. The mountain was a complicated place. His late young mistress was his half sister, Martha; long before Paris, blood and culture lines had already been crossed.

James Hemings is the household name that should have been that never was.

James, “at great cost” to Jefferson, is tutored in French and goes to work in some of the best kitchens Paris and Versailles have to offer. He suffers through being yelled at in a language he gradually gains fluency in and acquires skills that are being snuffed out as America is handed the complete reins of racial chattel slavery — he is multilingual, he is traveled, he can read, and he can write.

Jefferson gives him a salary and extra money. He looks every bit the part of a talented chef. He is a cook worthy not only of a plantation kitchen, but of French royalty itself. Many of the foods that Jefferson is credited with introducing to the American diet are in fact learned and translated under James’s hand.

They worked in concert with each other to develop the kitchen that Jefferson wanted, the reward upon training his brother Peter being James’s emancipation. On February 5, 1796, a black man received his freedom and became an American professional chef.

“James’s story and Edna Lewis’s story and everybody in between 1776 and 1976 — these early black cookbook authors and famous chefs and enslaved chefs and free men and women of color who owned taverns and catered in Philadelphia and Washington those are our ancestors,” Therese says. “We need to know where we come from.”

Therese’s own roots are in Newark, New Jersey. She is the second generation born up North to a family with roots in Latta, South Carolina. “We went down for reunions every summer. My grandmother talked about not being able to go to school until the tobacco harvest was over, but I never really heard them talk much about segregation, and just about nothing from slavery time. Put all of that together from not learning my history at school, and only knowing a little bit from home, and I felt fraudulent because I didn’t know my roots, I didn’t know where to start.” She looks at me intently. “We need a blueprint as individuals and as a people. We live in a puzzle where the pieces don’t even fit together. We need a path so we can put it all together again.” “We live in a puzzle where the pieces don’t even fit together. My Southern credentials once came from rattling off “home places” in my presentations as if I had been to all of them, seen the counties and creeks and courthouses. Some I had, some I had not. Phenix City and Seale, Alabama; Prospect, Virginia; Lancaster, South Carolina; Halifax County, North Carolina; Athens, Georgia; Tennessee; Mississippi; New Orleans . . . the list kept getting longer and longer as I added up all the spots and stops that led to me — crumbling kitchens, rotting auction blocks, graveyards iced in asphalt.

With each deterioration, I was becoming someone fading from who I was and where I came from, just in time for the rest of the world to catch amnesia with me. I began to have the urge to see the places, imagine the ancestors whose lives I could barely know otherwise, and taste the food.

My entire cooking life has been about memory. It’s my most indispensable ingredient, so wherever I find it, I hoard it. I tell stories about people using food, I swap memories with people and create out of that conversation mnemonic feasts with this fallible, subjective mental evidence.

Sometimes they are people long gone, whose immortality is expressed in the pulp of trees also long gone and in our electronic ether. Other times they are people who converse with me as I cook as the enslaved once cooked, testifying to people and places that only come alive again when they are remembered. In memory there is resurrection, and thus the end goal of my cooking is just that — resurrection.

Before I officially began the journey to dig deeper into my food and family roots and routes, I was racking up an internal encyclopedia about other people and how food affected their lives as proxy for the stories in my own bloodline and body.

This made for really uncomfortable armor. It never really fit me right. These were other people’s tales and paths — not my own. I began to wonder if I ever really would be able to locate myself in the human experience. What good is it to learn the flow of human history and to speak of the dead if their stories don’t speak to you? What of food history and facts and figures and flashpoints? What good is your own position as a culinary historian if you can’t find yourself in the narrative of your food’s story, if you don’t know who you are?

CHAPTER 6 FIELDWORK

How long has your family lived in this country?. My father Idris landed in the United States in 1984 settle then used his money to create a grocery shop that sells ingredients and many things African, Caribbean and Latinos can buy to cook at home, and items that people used back from their hometown once he open that shop, he was recognized on newspapers, Many people came to shop and were recognized for being the first to have an African shop in Baltimore City since the African community and people outside of Africa recognized him. Two years later, he settled down with my stepmother Eunice, who is African American, and daughter, Joani, in 1987; they had been married for awhile then. She later got pregnant with my half brother, Idris Jr. raised my brother from birth to a young adult (high-school). In 2001, my mom visited the United States. and met family and went back; then, in 2002, she was gifted a visa from family members and was gifted a ticket from her late brother. Later in 2002, my father divorced my stepmother. then a year later in 2003, he went to a party, and my aunt introduced my mom to my father. They met and got together, and in that same year, Mom got pregnant then, in June 2004. I was born; my Mom worked hard and was a nurse for over 20 years. till this day, on 2010 my father Idris sadly passed away when I was 5, it was just me and mom till this day.

Where did they come from?

Nigeria is a West African country it between the Sahel to the north and the Gulf of Guinea to the south in the Atlantic Ocean, it is the most populous country in Africa, and the world’s sixth most populous country. Both of my parents come from different states / town in Nigeria. Both of my parents tribe is Yoruba, my dad is from Oyo State, and my mom is from Ondo State both states have their dialect and speak Yoruba differently. ( I don’t know much about my dad life in Nigeria), my mother went to school with a full family she had older brothers that were making sure she was focused in school and a little sister and younger brother and two family household, she had a job she was farmer and sold chickens and lamb and many animals in her market and also had a job at the airport. My mom was taking care of her nephew who was having a trouble in school in the United States so his mother brought him to the Nigeria to calm down and experience the schools in Nigeria because of my mom taking care of him the mother appreciated my mom being so kind that she gifted my mom a visa and my mom told her late brother he then bought her a ticket but she didn’t want to leave but my grandmother told her to go but my mom was worried because my grandma Is old and needs to taken care of.

Has your family embraced American Nationalism?

Yes, my mother and my African American family has embraced the American patriotism. My mom likes American because she feels like she has more freedom and independence. My family celebrates 4 of July which is not common in Nigeria they take it really seriously because this is time for family time and Thanksgiving is another holiday we celebrate and have a family together, my African American family usually invite me to holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving especially since it’s a great way to celebrate with family since everyone is busy. another holiday that Nigerians celebrate is Easter Sunday, in Easter Sunday my family go to church and pray and lastly my mother embraces the Nigerian culture then USA because that’s her home.

If some of your family have migrated from other parts of the world, how do they integrate their American identity with their ethnicity identity.

My family connect from food, music, gatherings like church, party, cookout, and American dream. In my culture we eat similar food in west African culture but Nigeria make cuisine like Egusi, Efo Riro, Ayamese (Designer Stew), Ogbono Soup, Ewedu, Okra it goes well with Swallow like for example Eba, Amala, Iyan (Fufu) and Semolina. Jollof Rice, Ofada Rice usually prepared in home but mostly a party favorite. Another one is language for me I speak Yoruba small but I understand it correctly but can’t speak in a full conversation, even though I get judged for speaking English instead of Yoruba I think it’s because I was born and raised in the States but I think even if I don’t speak it I think it’s good that I hear the person. Lastly another popular one is Thanksgiving in Nigerian culture in America is popular in church they have events to come to church and pray and worship together and they give food and stay in church for about 3 or 4 hours (celestial church) this usually happens to family who are religiously wealthy.

As the Sun reported earlier this week, that’s about one in five positive tests and nearly two-thirds of the deaths since the pandemic hit the state.

None has occurred at the Maryland Baptist Aged Home on Rayner Avenue in West Baltimore, according to the Sun’s database of nursing home cases.

That’s because, in late February, after hearing from Trump, DeWitt believed the country faced a deadly threat of unpredictable scope. He took immediate action.

“The first thing we did was eliminate all visitations,” he says. “So family, volunteers, the church people who visit were all told they could not visit. It wasn’t too popular at first, but they understood it was for the safety of the residents.”

The Maryland Baptist Aged Home, established in the segregated-by-ordinance Baltimore of 1920, is considered the oldest African American owned and operated nursing home in the state. It has 30 residents and 21 full-time and 19 part-time employees. It is governed by the United Baptist Missionary Convention. DeWitt, pastor of First Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Sandtown-Winchester, has been chief financial officer and director of the home for seven years.

His first hire after taking the job was a nurse who specialized in infection prevention and quality control. That nurse, Nioca Osbourne, established protocols for dealing with infections and trained the staff.

“So we already had procedures in place for dealing with infections,” Reverend DeWitt says. “The next thing we did was eliminate residents going out unless it was for a crucial medical procedure. All employees who were not involved in direct care were told to stay home and work from there if they could. I personally have not been [inside the nursing home] for 11 weeks.”

The home stocked up quickly on extra masks, gloves and gowns. DeWitt scheduled his janitors so that the nursing home received thorough cleanings day and night. He asked each staff member involved in the care of residents to limit travel and contact with their family members. On reporting for work, staffers had to fill out a questionnaire about their outside activities and health conditions. “And we took their temperature three times a day,” DeWitt says.

Masks were dispensed to all the residents. Community meals were eliminated, and residents ate in their rooms. Employees were provided food so they would not have to go out for lunch or dinner. Rooms with one television and two residents got a second TV to help meet social distancing.

The nursing home hired an extra activities coordinator to visit with residents, coach them through daily exercises, play board games with them or take them for walks. This was particularly important because, says DeWitt, up to half of his residents have no relatives who visit them, and he was concerned they would feel even more isolated during the pandemic.

DeWitt and his staff did all this before seeing directives from government agencies. “We didn’t wait for guidance from the Centers for Disease Control or from the Maryland Department of Health or from Baltimore City,” he says. “We did what we thought was prudent at the very beginning of the pandemic.”

He gives credit for a team effort to the nurses and their assistants, the nursing director, Josephine Mungin; the home’s administrator, Johana Walbourn; the medical director, Dr. Narender Bharaj; the janitorial staff, dietician, food staff, social worker and therapists.

DeWitt says there will be no changes any time soon, no loosening up of the restrictions he put in place in February and March. Like many of the health professionals he listens to, DeWitt thinks it’s too soon for that for his vulnerable residents.

“But we have allowed porch visits,” he says. One at a time, residents are allowed to come out on the nursing home porch and speak to relatives on the sidewalk 12 to 18 feet away.

“My own aunt, Aunt Gerri Alston, is a resident,” DeWitt says. “She came out on the porch and cried. She was happy to see us.”"

National Emergency Call for:

WELCOME/ BIENVENIDA COMMITTEES FOR THE MIGRANT/REFUGEE CARAVAN

CARAVAN TO THE BORDER

We, the undersigned groups and individuals, call on community, union, student and worker groups to hold “Welcoming Committees” at the U.S. border.  Let’s bring food, water and aid. Let’s bring our bodies to welcome and show support for the thousands of refugees who are risking their lives to build a better life for their loved ones.

HOLD LOCAL ACTIONS

If you cannot get to the border, hold emergency actions in your city, town, workplace or school as the migrant and refugee caravan nears or reaches the U.S. border.  Shut down ICE offices, rally at detention centers, and schedule rush hour marches.

BUILD SOLIDARITY

We as workers, students and youth have more in common with the migrants who are fleeing conditions that have been manufactured by global capitalists and the Pentagon, than with these same bosses who refuse to pay workers a living wage or who fight against enacting universal health care or workers’ rights.

As women, LGBTQ, queer and trans activists, we extend our hand to our refugee sisters, brothers and siblings to build solidarity.

It is critical that we guarantee our opposition to every form of racism, both at home -- experienced by Black and Brown people in every major city and corner of this country -- along with fighting to say no to the racist policies that target Muslims, African, Caribbean and Latinx migrants.  We say No Walls against Mexico or Palestine.

It’s important to remember that the refugees who embarked on this grueling march are doing so because of U.S. imperialist policies that have left a legacy of violence, oppression and crushing poverty, forcing people to flee their homes and risk everything.

TO THE GI TROOPS

To those rank and file GIs being sent to the border, we call on you not to go.  If you are already there, then conduct work slow-downs, get sick, but most of all follow your conscience -- don’t shoot or brutalize defenseless unarmed children, women and men.

The cost of this troop deployment is estimated to be $220 million: this is badly needed money that could be spent on schools, jobs and veteran services that have been slashed.

PUSH BACK TRUMP REACTION

It’s urgent that we do everything possible to push back the Trump reaction which has ushered in a violent neo-right-wing current that threatens everyone.  We cannot wait until the elections; we must mobilize now!

We call on all groups to cooperate and work together to make this happen.  We urge those who are able to also join SOA - School of the America Watch at the border (You can contact them at: SOAW.org)

We provide tuition, textbooks, and school uniforms to underprivileged students (particularly girls) from primary school to high school level in Cameroon. 

 We provide merit-based tuition for college level education for underserved young women in Cameroon.

ACSA(African Community Service Award) 2021 By ALLN1 INC

The Caring Sisters are a group of selfless women whose mission is to empower women through education and improve the quality of life for the less privileged. Our core values are Respect, Teamwork and Community Focus, and we believe that education and necessities of life should be affordable and accessible to everyone. Our C.S.A. Scholarship and Women Empowerment Programs provide tuition and other educational expenses to underprivileged in Cameroon, West Africa, while our quarterly community outreach programs provide food, clothing, medical supplies and toiletries to those in need in Cameroon and here in the US. Long term, we hope to establish a Caring Sisters Orphanage and Training Academy in Cameroon and expand our services to other African countries and in the underserved communities worldwide. 

 Some of our efforts since our creation in the United States in 2012 are listed below: 

·       Scholarship and women empowerment: We have sponsored six primary school students for two academic years, one nursing school student for a year, and six young girls through cosmetology school, with a second set of six students starting this summer.

·       Quarterly Support to the Orphans and Homeless: 

o    We have conducted clothing drives, sending 7 large barrels full of clothes, shoes and school supplies which has served over 500 girls in the local community and the children residing in three orphanages. 

o    We provided personal hygiene and care products for over 200 young girls in 2019.

o    We provided 8 doors, 8 windows and dug a well for clean spring water for the House of Hope Orphanage in Bamenda, Cameroon.

o    We realize the disparities that exist in housing, food and healthcare access in our African American population here in the US. To support, we collected 6 boxes and over 500 cans of non-perishable food items for “My sister’s place” shelter for women in Baltimore, MD and served dinner for the day. We also cooked 45 full sized trays of food for 300 people and spent the day serving over 500 people in Baltimore, MD.

Icy Girl

“Cash money mama that be dining in Bahamas eating Fettuccini pasta with the scallops and the lobsters”

Well, we are not in the Bahama’s but that does not mean we cannot enjoy fettuccini pasta with the scallops and the lobster. 

If there is one thing you all should know about me, it is that I love to eat. It does not even matter where I go, I will enjoy myself as long as the food is good! You know how when you invite someone to go somewhere with you and they ask, “who else is going to be there?”

Yeah, no, my question is somewhere along the lines of “What kind of food are they serving?”

I am already assuming there is going to be food because why would they invite me unless there is food. Anything less would be down right disrespectful.  

Exhibit A: Disrespectful... very disrespectful

That is all to say, I am pretty much the food expert. I have been to so many different restaurants and carry-out spots around the East Coast, mainly New York, Maryland, and Miami. 

I put a list together (if you couldn’t tell by now, I love lists) of some of my favorite restaurants ever and what I typically get when I visit.

New York is first, for obvious reasons, (refer to my first post)

Sammy’s Fish Box - located on City Island in the Bronx is my O.G. seafood restaurant. I am literally never let down when I visit this place. It is more on the expensive side but I think it is worth it. I usually visit with family and we get about 2 servings of the Crab and Lobster Feast for us all to share (we are a big family). It comes with lobster, shrimp, crab legs, both King and Snow, all on a bed of delicious, fluffy yellow rice. 

10/10 - would definitely recommend 

Edo - this restaurant has multiple locations throughout New York. The location I am most familiar with is the Port Chester location. This is a Japanese hibachi style restaurant, meaning, they cook the food fresh right in front of you at the dining table! This has to be my favorite style of eating! There is nothing better than watching your food cook right in front of you, through an often times entertaining “show,” where the cooks perform minor tricks to keep your attention, like making a huge fire using onions. 

10/10 - I am definitely recommending

Accra Restaurant - Besides my mother’s food (and my aunts) (and my food), this is one of the best African food you will get. Accra restaurant mainly serves dishes of the west African cuisine, specifically Ghana. They have all you can wish for, from fufu, to kenkey to waakye. My favorite food to get from here would be their waakye (pronounced WAH-CHE) and jollof rice. One of my secret pleasures is when restaurants fill my plate to the brim and Accra Restaurant does just that.  

9/10 - delicious food!

Let’s get into Maryland!

TasteThis - located in Baltimore, offers some of the best soul food you can find! There is much to try on the menu and the food is always delicious and hot. If you ever find yourself in this restaurant, you should try the fried chicken and the mac and cheese. It is my go-to order. You won’t regret it!

9/10 - mouthwatering!

Paul Chen Hong Kong Restaurant - this has got to be some of the best carryout Chinese food I have ever gotten. It took me a couple years to find the perfect Chinese takeout spot in Baltimore, but I am glad I found it. Everything on the menu is superb, from the white rice shrimp broccoli to the chicken wings with fried rice. If you are in Baltimore searching for some Chinese food, this is the place to go. They even have bubble tea, which is amazing as well!

10/10/10 - highly recommended 

The Cheesecake Factory - as basic as it may seem, the cheesecake factory is a restaurant that never disappoints. Their menu has a little bit of everything, ranging from hamburgers and finger foods to pasta and vegan options. If you are with a group of people who all have a taste for different foods, this may be your restaurant. P.S. the pasta carbonara is the best! Wait, no, it might have to be their bread!

10/10 - everyone is satisfied!

Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant - located on Maryland Avenue in Baltimore, Dukem has become one of my staple restaurants. Serving Ethiopian cuisine, I have yet to eat at another Ethiopian restaurant that surpasses this one. The awaze tibs are my favorite, although their firfir is savory as well. One of the best to do it.

10/10 - seconds anyone?

Welcome to the 305!

Puerto Sagua Restaurant - Now, this restaurant holds a special place in my heart. They serve Cuban food and are the best at it! This restaurant single handedly sparked my love for Cuban food! 

Wow, I love me some Cuban food. 

I stumbled upon this restaurant while on South Beach. They have a plethora of menu items to choose from. When I go here, I usually order the shrimp in Spanish sauce, which is enticing, if I may say so myself. 

12/10 - speaks for itself 

Planet 57 Restaurant and Bar - Although now closed, this restaurant was one of my favorites. It was as if Italy and Puerto Rico had a baby together and birthed Planet 57. It is the perfect blend of Italian food and Puerto Rican food. One thing about them that I remember was the unique food items that they included in their menu; they had a pizza that had pickles and ham on it with a drizzle of dressing as toppings. I don’t know about you, but I am a plain pizza, sometimes buffalo chicken kind of girl. So if you are into that combination, maybe you should check this place out! I did, however try the linguine pasta with mussels, which was tasty as well. 

8/10 - I recommend
