Crossing The Bridge
As we bid farewell to the first quarter of the year, it is time to pause and reflect on our goals. This activity is like checking in with ourselves to see where we are. My friends in the Scrum field would call it an “agile retrospective” meeting. This is where the team reflects on the past and note areas of improvement going forward.
At the conclusion of this retrospective, you’d have a good indication as to if you’re on track, if you’ve made progress, or whether you are still standing at the starting line, paralyzed by the fear of failure? In the journey towards our dreams, one thing is certain: failure is inevitable. But it is not the end of the road; rather, it’s a steppingstone to greatness.
In life, we often face crossroads where the fear of failure looms large. We hesitate, we procrastinate, and we cling to the safety of familiarity. But what if we shift our perspective? What if we view failure not as a defeat, but as a badge of honor — a testament to our courage to try? After all, isn’t it better to stumble and learn, than to never take a leap at all?
Making tough choices is akin to stepping into the fog of uncertainty. We are torn between two paths, each shrouded in mystery. How do we know which one leads to fulfillment and which one to regret? The truth is, we don’t. But by embracing failure, we acknowledge that growth often sprouts from the seeds of uncertainty. It’s not about making the right decision, but about making a decision and committing to it wholeheartedly.
The difference between success and stagnation lies in our mindset. Are we content with dreaming of ‘one day’ achieving our goals, or are we willing to take action from ‘day one’? Embracing failure means embracing the journey, with all its twists and turns. It’s about showing up every day, ready to face the challenges head-on, knowing that each setback brings us one step closer to our aspirations. One thing to note is that you need to have a sense of direction. Having a lot of interests is nice, but if you do not ultimately know where you are going, every single road you travel on will lead you nowhere. Not even to Damascus.
Every decision we make carries a cost — the opportunity cost of choosing one path over another. But the greatest cost of all is the price of inaction. When we let fear dictate our choices, we forfeit the chance to grow, to learn, and to become the best version of ourselves. Embracing failure means understanding that the road to success is paved with setbacks and detours, but it’s also lined with invaluable lessons and moments of triumph. Prior to landing in the SAP industry, I’d tried my hands in other things like Cyber Security and Risk Management. You might think you like something and then find out that you’re not good at it. You might see something as incredibly difficult but find out that you’re a natural at it. Just try it, you never know.
As we navigate through life, let us not be afraid to stumble, to fall, and to fail. For in the face of adversity lies our greatest opportunity for growth. Let us embrace failure as a companion on our journey towards success, knowing that each setback is not a defeat, but a lesson in resilience and determination. So, as we embark on the next quarter of the year, let us dare to dream, dare to try, and dare to fail. For it’s in our failures that we find the courage to truly succeed. Nothing’s In Vain.

The Rip Tide
Returning home to Cameroon after almost a decade away was a mix of excitement and apprehension. As the plane descended, memories flooded back of childhood days spent in bustling markets and vibrant streets. This post is not about being in Cameroon, but the journey to get there.
Most Cameroonians, well, most Africans will tell you about the increasing costs of traveling back home from Europe, Asia, and America. Let me give you some reasons why. Firstly, fluctuating fuel prices have significantly impacted airline ticket prices, making air travel to Africa more expensive. As fuel costs increase, airlines naturally pass down these costs to passengers via higher fares, especially for long haul flights. Travelers coming from America can relate. More than half of the trip is over the Atlantic.
Secondly, infrastructure development and maintenance cost within African countries have contributed to the overall expense of traveling. While some countries boast modern airports and transportation networks, others cannot relate, leading to higher operational costs for airlines and travel companies. Once again, these costs are transferred to travelers via higher ticket fares.
Thirdly, stringent safety and security measures implemented by both African governments and international aviation authorities add to the costs of traveling, as compliance with these regulations require additional investments in equipment, training, and personnel.
Anyway, I boarded my flight to Cameroon December 20th last year. It was my first time flying with EgyptAir. Based on the previous paragraphs, you can infer as to why I decided to fly with them. Anyway, it was a beautiful plane. Boeing 787–9 Dreamliner, and it looked like it was just a few years old. The flight to Cairo would be about 10 hours and then another 5 hours flight to Douala, Cameroon sandwiched around a 4-hour layover.
It had been a long morning driving to the airport so I had made up my mind to spend that 10 hours by sleeping as much as I could. Of course, I woke up when it was time to eat. The food was great, good options, and nice portion sizes. Everything was normal, I went back to sleep after eating. It was an exceptionally smooth flight to Egypt.
10 hours later, we touched down in Cairo. I got lost so many times trying to find a lounge that would take my Priority Pass card. Finally found one and spent the next 3 hours there. They had some finger foods, snacks and non-alcoholics drinks and juices. Their guava juice was impeccable. Finally saw that the flight to Douala was boarding so I made my way to the gate.
The boarding process was very interesting. They split the us into two lines by gender for security checks. This took another hour to finish causing a late departure. When I walked into the plane, I was amazed. The plane looked aged like it was used during the 70’s. I made it to my seat and kept scanning the plane for further analysis. Such a stark contrast with the plane that left America. This plane lacked many of the basic amenities like personal TVs, power outlets, and reliable internet connections.
The absence of amenities was striking. While flights to/from other routes offer in-flight entertainment and the convenience of staying connected, flights to Africa often leave passengers disconnected from the digital world. It is a reminder of the technological disparities that persist between regions. Imagine traveling with kids, how do you keep them occupied and entertained. Three rows up from me was a man having an enjoyable time and taking selfies. He didn’t seem to be bothered about the rage that was going on in my head.
The discrepancy extends beyond the flight experience to the onboard cuisine. While traveling from the USA to Europe, passengers are treated to a diverse array of culinary delights. Yet, on flights to Africa, the food offerings pale in comparison. It’s ironic to consider that many of the spices that enhance dishes worldwide originate from Africa, yet the culinary experience onboard fails to reflect this richness.
Turbulence woke me up. We were over N’Djamena, Chad, which is about 2 hours from Douala by air. How I knew we where over N’Djamena was because the plane had these old monitors over the middle row which finally showed our location.
The irony about this entire experience was what happened when the planed touched down in Cameroon. It was a very smooth landing I must admit. Anyone who has ever traveled by air would tell you that when the plane lands, you remain in your seat until the plane reaches the gate and comes to a complete stop. As the plane landed and taxied towards the gate, some passengers got up from their seats, and hastily started retrieving their belongings from the overhead compartments. It was a chaotic atmosphere, and the flight attendants could not do anything because it risked their own safety. It was actually very fascinating, but not in a good way. In all my years of flying, I’d never seen something like that.
As I stood in line inside the humid airport in Douala waiting to have my passport stamped, I thought about the whole journey. The question I had in my mind prior to the scene when we landed was, “why does Africa always seem to get the shorter end of the stick?” Seems like I got my answer after all.
Why would airlines send their best planes to Africa when us Africans cannot properly behave on them?
Can’t have nice things if you don’t know how to fully appreciate it.

My PRODUCTIVITY After Becoming a DAD.
Firstly, Happy Father’s Day 2023 to all the Dads! #DadGang
I don’t know, maybe a better title would have been “My Quick Thoughts After Two Months as a Dad” ? See my previous post and you tell me :)
Anyway, I would definitely put myself in the “having kids helped me get my act together” group. Even though it aches me to admit it, before having children I was drifting. My life was comfortable, but I was reaching a professional and personal plateau. Even though I definitely have less time now, I am more efficient and able to say no to people and things with ease.
I should also add that my wife is an awesome mother and is very supportive partner.
As you may or may not know, we welcomed our first child a little over two months ago. In addition, I run a YouTube channel, have a full-time job, some side businesses, and I’m a husband. So its easy to see how I'm up to my eye balls with responsibilities because, yes, I’d absolutely argue each of those items individually can be a full time job on its own.
I can definitely understand the fear of having to pause pursuing all your passions because having kids put you in that corner of all responsibility for them and nothing else. You go to work to earn a living to provide for them and come home to begin taking care of their needs with no extra time to pursue side hustles like your Etsy shop business, for example.
The idea of ambition after having kids is a fascinating discourse. I don’t believe my ambition or productivity has diminished. As a matter of fact it has been amplified. I suppose that's a good thing, I'm not entirely sure. I place a higher value on time. My goals for life are much more distinct now. For me, having children caused a significant shift in risk tolerance.
One thing I’ve observed is that some people prioritize other things above their work to the point that it suffers. One of the issues is having too many children or simply not distributing tasks between spouses adequately. You might not see it from the outside looking in, but everyone you work with does.
Somebody might argue, “I am driven to get my life steady by becoming an accountant, for example, at the age of 25, and having children is not something I am considering at the moment.” They might think “after I turn 32, I want to have children then if I so choose.”
They are motivated to grow personally in hopes that becoming older won’t make it difficult is certainly plausible but hope is not a strategy. And while I am not here to advocate for being a dad at all cost or by force, I think its a blessing and does not impair life in any shape or form. In fact it clears a lot of things up.
Don’t wait — try now. If you want to have children, then go ahead and do it; don’t allow lack of funds be an excuse (having several children is another story). But if you do, think of a strategy to obtain additional funding to support it. But don’t sacrifice your quality of life to advance your career.
So how have I managed to stay productive while being a father to a newborn? Firstly, I have learned to just make time for it.
I find myself putting my cell phone down and outside of my office for one to two hour chunks of time to get stuff done. This is mostly when my kid is asleep or hanging out with mom. This works only when scheduled and communicated with your partner. That way you can then be more present when you are with your kids and doing parental activities or spending quality time. If its important to you, then there is time.
Secondly, I have learned to just give up some stuff. The power of saying ‘No’ is very effective. Listen, I love watching sports and right around this time is the thick of one of the most exiting games ever invented, NBA playoffs. If I have time to be productive on my YouTube channel or side business and on the other hand I could have just been watching a Game one in the Eastern Conference first round playoffs between two teams I don’t really care about, then The TV is not getting turned on. In the same regard, even though I didn't quite hand out much with friends without a family, I have learned to just say no and pick the most important of functions to show my face. Its just that simple. I’ll definitely come to your birthday or engagement party but I'm not going to brunch with you 3 Sundays in a month!
Thirdly, I have learned to get some sleep. If you know me you know I already love taking naps and going to bed as early as 9:30pm. But because sleep and productivity are closely related, it’s crucial to take advantage of any chance to get some shut-eye that does present itself. Chronic sleep deprivation makes it more difficult to focus, make decisions wisely, think creatively, and maintain overall work performance. So maintaining the bedroom as a sleep sanctuary, developing a wind-down time for bed, and minding the caffeine intake have been a good practice.
Lastly, I'll just say without a supportive spouse none of this works as intended and all the time. Shout out to my wife.
Having kids might discourage ambition, I hate to admit it. I’ve always been someone who is ambitious. That phrase hurts my heart to read in writing. I try to escape from it. But if there was nothing substantial there, why would I flinch? Once you have children, it is inevitable that you will care more about them than you do about yourself. Additionally, it’s a zero-sum game with attention. You can only focus your attention on one thought at a time. Once you have kids, it will usually be your kids, so your current endeavor won’t be as regularly in the news.
However, I think i can confidently say when you have children, life is just getting started.

A SLEEPING BEAST
It’s incredible how July is already over. I am pretty sure it only started a few days ago. I was on a plane last week returning home after going to watch my beloved Manchester United take on Real Madrid in a friendly match here in the States. It was an unmissable opportunity to watch the players in person versus the usual options of parking on my couch in front of the television or going to the pub with the guys. The “foolish team” as I jokingly always call them when they lose, lost to Real Madrid 2–0 so I had plenty of time to reflect on other things as we cruised at altitude.
Life is all about growth and progression. We must constantly evolve. You cannot expect to do the same thing every day and get a different result. One plus one will always be two regardless of what day of the week you do the math. Change the equation, change the outcome.
You are not on this earth on probation. You just didn’t appear out of the bloom. I used to think that you needed another person to believe in your dreams for it to really blossom. That point of view has since perished. You must feel and believe that your very own existence is fundamentally precious in it’s own way. Just like the movie, Inception, I am not here to sell this illusion to you. At the end of the day, it is your life and your decision. All I am doing is planting this idea in your head that everything you need to thrive in this life is within you.
Regardless of the who, the what, the when, the why, the where, you are a “sleeping” beast capable of summoning the greatness that lives within you.
