Watched “Het Tweede Gelaat” (French title: “Double Face”, English title: “Control”) (2017), Jan Verheyen’s latest movie.

(Jan is somewhat of a legend on the Belgian film scene: when he was 18, he started a new film festival on the Belgian coast and such guests as Robert Altman and Dennis Hopper showed up.)

“Het Tweede Gelaat” is Jan’s second thriller based on a novel of the Belgian writer Jef Geeraerts with the police detectives Eric Vincke (Koen De Bouw) and Freddy Verstuyft (Werner De Smedt).

This time, they struggle with a serial killer after the police dogs find 6 bodies without a head buried in the countryside.

I liked everything about this movie: the complex screenplay, the acting (with newcomer Sofie Hoflack as a nice surprise), the cool photography in scandi noir style and the locations. (I recognised most of them instantly.)

The Antwerp cathedral plays a big role in the finale: Vincke discovers where the killer is hiding because he recognises the carillon over the phone. A pursuit on the rooftops of the adjoining houses ensues that made me think of Hitchcock’s “Vertigo”.

Congratulations to the team that made this movie, loved it a lot!

Voor mijn tweede “extra” ben ik gaan kijken naar de film “het tweede gelaat” van Jan Verheyen. Een vlaamse film dus. Het scenario werd gebaseerd op het boek “Double Face” van Jef Geeraerts. Het is de derde 'Vincke en Verstuyft' thriller. Na “De zaak Alzheimer” en “Dossier K” presenteert men aan Vlaanderen “het tweede gelaat”. Wie de hoofdrollen spelen in zo een productie is dan ook vanzelfsprekend. Koen De Bouw (rechts) kruipt weer in de huid van Eric Vincke en Werner De Smedt (links) speelt opnieuw Freddy Verstuyft. In deze derde thriller wordt hun relatie op de proef gesteld. Ze krijgen namelijk te maken met een seriemoordenaar. En wanneer uiteindelijk Verstuyft voor de charmes valt van een slachtoffer die het overleefd heeft, zit het spel zeker op de wagen. 

Mening: Deze film kon zeker niet tippen aan de kwaliteit van “De zaak alzheimer” en “Dossier K”. Hiermee bedoel ik dat deze film onderdoet. De film heeft noch diepgang noch dubbele bodems. Tijdens de film komen we ook niet te weten waarom de dader de moorden pleegt, het blijft gissen naar een motief. Het einde is ontzettend voorspelbaar en tegelijkertijd vergezocht. Ondanks dat de film geen topper was, kan ik altijd genieten van het duo. Ik ben persoonlijk een fan van het acteerwerk van Koen De Bouw. 

Conclusie: Genoten van de film, dankzij de inde indrukwekkende vlaamse cast maar niet van het verhaal.
