As a trained lawyer, Heydrich and Himmler counted on Best throughout the 1930s for his skills in conceptualizing and justifying Nazi law, which helped provide the SS-police apparatus with its nearly unrestricted power over German society.

He took part in Night of the Long Knives in the southern portion of Germany.

After the war, Best testified as a witness at the Nuremberg Trial of the Major War Criminals, during which he attempted to present the Gestapo as a harmless state organization that was subordinated to state leaders and was nearly undifferentiated from Germany's criminal police. Historian Frank McDonough characterized Best's testimony as a "revisionist interpretation of the Gestapo". For instance, Best claimed that the Gestapo primarily instituted investigations in response to reports from the general public and that only serious cases of treason warranted "enhanced interrogations" under strict guidelines, during which no confessions were ever extorted from the accused.

In 1948, Best was sentenced to death by a Danish court, but his sentence was reduced to 12 years on appeal. Best was released in 1951 as part of a Danish amnesty program for Nazi war criminals.

No matter what has been said, he pretty much remained a committed nazi and fought for amnesty for other war criminals

He died in 1989.

Diana (Ghisi) Stolz - Florentine born. Arranged wife of Werner Stolz. Diana is quite awkward and blunt when first knowing her. She likes to draw in her free time. (Name is work in progress)

Relationship status: Not really romantically inclined with each other but they respect and hold high regard for one another.

Show don’t tell: Diana seems to struggle fitting in with Tassing but in later acts grew to find her “calling” per se. Your actions towards Werner can affect the outcome of Diana in Act III.

First interaction:

[Scene: Stolz house interior, Diana is folding sheets by the beds] D: “So you’re the artist that broke my husband’s nose?” [Andreas is given a choice of dialogue options, but no matter what the reply will be, it's an introduction and apology] [Diana surprisingly smiles] D: “It’s fine. Reminded me of what I’ve did when I first met him.” A: ”…” A: “I…better go now.” D: ”…” D: “Oh. Ok. Until later.” A: “Until Later, Mrs. Stolz [x]”

What you don’t see: Diana develops an unlikely friendship with Brother Florian. They actually knew each other lightly before the events of Pentiment, since he visits Tassing before for medical help. If you’ve head butted Werner during the inspection scene, Werner will tell on the Abbott, thus resulting Brother Florian being punished by having no more access to the library books (If I remember correctly on my last gameplay, I forgot if Claus giving him the Italian book was ever mentioned). From time to time, Diana would drop by a book to the infirmary for him to read. If given the opportunity, she would come inside to teach him Italian. As an informal apology from Werner’s unnecessary insults earlier she stated.

In 1949, Best’s death sentence for his activities as Reichsbevollmächtigter in Denmark was commuted to 5 years of imprisonment, of which he’d already served 4.

To mark this ‘happy case of justice,’ the Svikmøllen published 4 sonnets by the ‘beloved diplomat’ in deliberately clumsy German. The very last line says: ‘Die Best-Sonetten bleiben nok ein Bestseller!’

Best did write during his incarceration, but these sonnets are pure satire by the Danish magazine. He even considered suing for libel.
